Happy Holidays!

he holiday season is upon us. With our incredible cultural and religious diversity, the winter holidays can have very different meanings for each of our readers. However, one constant is celebrating with friends and loved ones. Our family celebrates on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a “Yankee Swap” gift exchange. In a Yankee Swap, each participant brings a wrapped gift. The gifts are opened in sequence, where each player gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. It is always great fun! Our kids often beg us to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivous, made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Our seventeen-year-old son is particularly interested in Festivous’ “airing of the grievances!” So far, we have successfully resisted! The Jaillet family and everyone at Our City Media wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday. It commemorates the miracle of a small amount of oil lasting eight days in the ancient temple's menorah, celebrated by lighting the menorah, playing games with a dreidel, and enjoying special foods like latkes and sufganiyot. Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with us, as we LIGHT UP Memorial Park with holiday cheer! Make incredible memories with family and friends, while seeing a colorful cast of characters and listening to the sounds of the season. The Town of Davie’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department is hosting a free Movie in the Park event series on select Fridays of every month from September to December. ne of my New Year’s resolutions is to win the Lottery, which I am sure is the goal of many. What do we need to know if we win? Edwin Castro won a huge $2.04 billion in the lottery on February 14, 2023, taking home $997.6 million at once, instead of getting it over 30 years. Someone in Maine also hit the jackpot with $1.35 billion. Winning the lottery means you need to think about how to use that money wisely. You don't want to lose it all like some winners do. Be patient. There's a grace period to claim your prize; in Florida, it's a 180-day countdown. Don't rush. Plan how to spend your money even before you get it. Draw your line in the sand. When your bank account balloons, so might your fan base. Family, old buddies, and even scammers may line up for a share. It's okay to say no. Still, you might want to give some away to people or charities. Remember, big gifts might mean big taxes. For 2023, you can give away $17,000 without tax or $34,000 with your spouse. Next year, it's $18,000, or $36,000 for couples. Think about taxes. The winner from California chose a one-time payment but won't get the full amount because of taxes. Before spending on big things, wait until you've paid all taxes. For example, about 24% of the winnings go to the IRS upfront. Then there's more to pay in April. The “lottery curse." This curse has become almost as famous as the lottery itself. Here's how the nightmare scenario typically unfolds for some unlucky winners: Imagine this: The moment you've won, your life turns into a non-stop party. Sounds great, right? But the plot twists. MODS Releases Loggerhead Sea Turtle Into the Wild

he Museum of Discovery & Science (MODS), in partnership with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Veterinary Care Program and Sea Turtle Care and Conservation Specialists, released its Loggerhead Sea Turtle Ambassador Georgette (Gette) into the wild on Sunday, November 5. Named in memory of generous Museum supporter, George Batchelor and The Batchelor Foundation, Gette resided in the Sea Turtle habitat at MODS since she arrived in October 2022. “Our sea turtle initiative has been an essential part of the Museum’s DNA since opening, and we have released dozens of sea turtles. Our mission is connecting people to inspiring science, and for thousands of MODS’ guests and community members who encountered Gette in our sea turtle observation exhibit, it was a truly meaningful experience,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “With the goal of ocean release, the life sciences team at MODS worked diligently to help Gette sharpen her natural instincts by replicating experiences she will encounter in open waters. Now that she has achieved optimal growth, releasing her into the ocean is conservation in action for all to see.”

SEA TURTLE FACTS

• The Loggerhead is one of seven different species of sea turtles. Six of the species —Green (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate), Kemp’s Ridley (Lepidochlys kempi), Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) - can be found throughout the ocean, in both warm and cool water. The seventh species, the Flatback (Natator depressus), lives only in Australia. • The Loggerhead and Green sea turtles are listed as threatened. The Leatherback, Hawksbill and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle species are listed as endangered everywhere due to human actions and lifestyles. • Accidental capture by fishing gear, which often results in death, is the greatest threat to most sea turtles. Climate change also impacts sea turtle nesting beaches and eggs. • Sea turtle populations are slowly recovering thanks to the collaborative effort of scientists, non-profits, universities, grassroots organizations and many dedicated people.

On July 23, 2022, Gette was hatched at FAU in Boca Raton as part of a study on how climate change affects the endangered sea turtle population. On October 25, 2022, Gette came to the Museum weighing 300 g (0.6 lbs.) For a year, Gette munched on daily buffets of shrimp, capelin and herring. She honed her swimming skills while keeping plenty of snappiness for a turtle. Now Gette, at 6.3 kilograms (13.9 lbs.) with a carapace length of 35.9 cm, is big and strong enough to journey into the wild. On October 31, 2023, Gette was transported via boat to a nearshore weed line where she was returned to the open water. Bon Voyage, Gette! The Museum has a permit from FWC that allows it to hold one loggerhead turtle for educational purposes. The FWC is responsible for matching turtles with educational centers. The release location is determined based on where the turtles were originally found and the conditions of the waters around Florida. While Loggerhead nests are the most common type of nest found in Florida, the species is still considered threatened in the state and endangered around the world. Humans pose a big threat to the species, and Gette helped educate visitors on how to make an impact with sea turtles. Simple ideas like picking up trash so it doesn’t end up in a turtle’s belly and avoiding single-use plastic like straws and plastic bags, which can look like food to a hungry sea turtle, can make a big difference. “Special thanks to The Batchelor Foundation, a private Florida foundation focused on grant-making to support children, animals, and the natural environment in South Florida, and FAU for collaborating on this critical environmental initiative,” said Cox. he Davie Fire Rescue Department actively participates in the National Fire Protec tion Association's (NFPA) Fire Prevention Campaign every year. Specifically, they designate the entire month of October as Fire Prevention Month, with the primary aim of raising awareness about fire safety and enhancing the protection of homes and families. The tradition of observing Fire Prevention Week during the second week of October dates back to 1922, in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In modern times, Fire Prevention Week and Month are commemorated by spreading fire safety information and educating families, students, and the community. Throughout October, the Davie fire rescue personnel visited 25 schools to deliver fire safety demonstrations to approximately 4,800 students.

arents should encourage their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovascular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly advised that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries. In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however, the majority of these children outgrow these conditions

without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping during activity. Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of long-term ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist, immediately, for better long-term prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle. Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immobilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years. Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the

growth plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. Commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in basketball because of the force from coming down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest, immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy. Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury. The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and orthotics.

ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need and therefore use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record along with versatility of use makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazepam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system, which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach.
