Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 4/30/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. Let’s Celebrate Earth Day
E
very year, on April 22nd, people around the world recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. Earth Day, as we call it today, was proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and founded in 1970. Since then, it has evolved from a day for teachers to focus on nature to a global rally day for environmentalists. Locally, Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the wonders of South Florida. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a few miles away. The Everglades, which is both an exciting natural refuge to visit and a critically important ecosystem, is right in our back yard. Just off shore, there are miles of coral reefs full of fish and wildlife. Preserving the beauty and splendor of our natural environment is critical for the continued enjoyment of this wonderful community. This year, let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking a step back from our fast-paced digital world and recognizing the splendor of the environment around us. You could visit the Long Key Nature Center in Davie, take an airboat ride through the Everglades, dip your toes in the surf, or simply spend a few hours at one our wonderful local parks. Whatever you do, feel fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sincerely,

Children to Test Their Creativity at Eco-Eggstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest BY DEBBY TEICH
W
2016 Eco-Eggstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest
hat is the best way to prevent an egg from breaking when it is dropped from the top of a Davie fire truck ladder? On April 13, from 10am to 5pm, kids of all ages will do their best to figure out the answer during Young At Art Museum’s Annual Eco-Eggstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest held at the Davie Museum. The contest is part of YAA’s Earth Day celebration, which teaches children and adults creative ways to reuse, reduce and recycle and also demonstrates how art can be an instrument for positive environmental change. To protect the eggs, children will use their creativity and ingenuity to create cradles or parachutes from the building materials included in a $2 kit, such as tape, paper bags, cotton balls and more. The egg shelter design must incorporate a recyclable “challenge material.” The material will be announced the day of the event. At 2pm, fire personnel from Town of Davie Fire Rescue will carry the eggs up an engine’s extension ladder and release them one at a time to see if they can survive the 50-foot fall without cracking their shells. In past years, the crowd has sported original signs that read “SPLAT!” and “EGG-cellent!” while chanting “Drop the Eggs!” as they fall one-by-one from the ladder. The contest attracts children of all ages. When they are not successful, many return the following year to try a new approach. Some rely on their own skills, while others seek the help of their parents, other participants or educators at the event. Typically, about 200 eggs are dropped and less than a dozen survive. Prizes are awarded to the winners. “Our Annual Eco-Eggstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest has grown to be a community favorite among our students in our Spring Art Camp, as well as our daily visitors,” said Yumina Myers, manager of school and public programs for YAA Museum. “It excites us to see students using a vast range of STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Arts & Math) strategies to build the perfect egg shelters. We are also very grateful to the men and women of the Davie Fire Rescue Department who help make it all possible.” YAA Museum is located at 751 SW 121st Ave, in Davie. For information, visit www.youngatartmuseum.org or call 954-424-0085.

Davie Residents to Participate in 20th Annual Waterway Clean-Up COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he message is clear. Davie residents are proud of their community and they want to make sure that it is litter-free. On April 8, several hundred residents are expected to participate in the Town of Davie and Central Broward Water Control District’s 20th Annual Waterway Clean-up and Trash Splash, a public awareness campaign to keep the waterways clean. All individuals or groups must register by April 6. The effort started with a group of volunteers gathering on a Saturday to clean up the waterways and has grown into a major event involving school clubs, boy and girl scouts, religious and non-profit organizations, local families and individuals. Organizers are looking for groups, families, or individual residents to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. Trash bags will be provided. Check-in for the event begins at 8am at Davie Town Hall, 6591 Orange Drive (in front of the Council Chambers), and the clean-up will take place from 9am to 11:30am. Each of the volunteers will be assigned to a small area along the C-11 Canal, between State Road 7 and Flamingo Road. Participants should wear clothes that can get wet and dirty, as well as work gloves and closed toed shoes. In return for their efforts, participants will receive a free t-shirt or hat and water, as well as service hours. They will also get a ticket to
attend the “Trash Splash” pool party, which will be held after the cleanup at the Davie Pine Island Aquatics Center, 3800 SW 92nd Avenue. There will be free hot dogs and other free refreshments, as well as a D.J. spinning tunes all afternoon. Bring your swim suit and take a dip in the pool. Everyone who cleans is invited to attend. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators, car tires and air conditioners. Thanks to their efforts, each year they are finding fewer large items and less trash. Barbara Hollow plans to participate in the clean-up with her two children. “I am so proud of my Town and I want to make sure that it stays clean,” said Hollow. Davie Town Hall is located at 6591 Orange Drive. Pine Island Park Pool is located at 3800 SW 92nd Avenue, in Davie. Preregistration is required. Residents Get Informed & Have Fun at Town of Davie Fire & Police Expo COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
W
hen most Davie residents have an emergency, they call the Davie Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. They recently had an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo. Approximately 1,000 people attended the event, which was held at the Public Safety Complex. “This event gives us an opportunity to show off the resources that we have at our disposal to better serve the community,” said Davie Police Sergeant Mark Leone. “Thank you to everyone that attended the event and we hope to see you next year.” Visitors to the Expo enjoyed demonstrations from the Police Motorcycle Unit, SWAT team, K-9 team, Dive team, U.S. Coast Guard, and Police Mounted Unit. They also watched a rappelling exhibition, fire extinguisher demonstration, CPR demonstration, and a vehicle extrication drill. They explored fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the smoke trailer, the Crime Scene Unit, and more. They visited with the Davie Police “Justice League,” as well as Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog. They also toured the inside of Fire Station 65 and the Police Department, where they will saw the equipment that the firefighters and police officers use and carry. Children even tried on some of the gear. Local and state agencies had tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team, stroke awareness, blood pressure checks, child fingerprinting, child car seat safety, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more. This is the third year that ten-year-old Luke Glassman attended the event. “It was so cool to see the man jump from the helicopter, watch the police officers ride their motorcycles and go inside the fire station,” said Luke. “When I grow up, I want to be a policeman or a fireman, so I can help people.” For information on the Davie Police Department, follow them on Twitter @DaviePolice and like them on FaceBook at www. Town of Davie and Red Cross Partner to Install Smoke Alarms BY DEBBY TEICH
N
early two-thirds of all fire deaths happen in homes that have no smoke alarms or that have malfunctioning units. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly. To help protect the public from a fire and its effects, the American Red Cross has implemented a nationwide effort to install smoke detectors. The Town of Davie recently partnered with the American Red Cross, Broward County Chapter, to install over 360 free lithium ion self-activating smoke detectors. “It is extremely important for us to educate our residents about the importance of having an operational smoke detector installed in their homes,” said Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul. “Fire alarms should be an important piece of equipment in all homes.” Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department personnel met with residents throughout the target areas of Orange Park and Western Hills Mobile Home communities to find out if they were interested in having smoke detectors installed in their homes. The volunteers educated the residents about having an escape plan in the event of a fire, provided them with a fire safety checklist, and hurricane planning information. They also checked existing fire alarms in the homes and replaced old fire alarms with new ones. All of the smoke detectors were donated by the

American Red Cross. “Having a fire alarm in your home should never be taken for granted; this can be a lifesaving equipment,” said Town of Davie Fire Rescue Chief Julie Downey, who played an instrumental role in the implementation of this initiative. “The safety tips that were taught to the residents are not only recommended by the American Red Cross, but also by the National Fire Photo credit: Town of Davie Prevention Association.” According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), properties should have a lithium ion smoke detector installed. The batteries in these detectors last for 10 years. Residents who still have older model smoke detectors are encouraged to change the batteries whenever daylight savings time starts and ends. The NFPA recommends the following smoke alarm tips to prevent fires: ▸▸ Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home. ▸▸ Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. ▸▸ Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. ▸▸ Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. ▸▸ Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. “I am thrilled that we were given this amazing opportunity to partner with the American Red Cross,” said District 3 Councilmember Susan Starkey. “This initiative has taken several months to plan, organize, and implement.”

Old Davie School Participates in Orange Blossom Parade & Festival BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he Old Davie School Historical Museum participated in the Orange Blossom Parade and won “Best Non-Commercial Float.” To depict the parade’s theme, “a gallop through time,” Rick and Lisa Caspanello used their artistic and woodworking talents to create a timeline that began in the early 1900s. Old Davie School also had a booth at the Festival, where second generation Highwaymen artists, R.L. Lewis and Kelvin Hair displayed their art for sale. Following the parade at the Orange Blossom Festival, volunteers for the Old Davie School Historical Museum gave visitors a taste of what life was like in the early 1900’s. Wearing pioneer attire, they took visitors on a tour of a reconstructed 1909 one-room pioneer house, so they could see how Florida pioneers lived before electricity and indoor plumbing. The pioneers churned butter, prepared the batter, snapped beans and built a
fire to prepare the meal for the day. Visitors watched them cook on the open fire and then sampled the homemade food fresh food, which included bean soup, biscuits with jam and butter, collard greens, cherry cobbler, pineapple upside cake and more.
Volunteers also took visitors on a free guided tour of the Old Davie School Historical Museum, which tells the story of how the community of Davie grew from the reclaimed land of the Everglades into the booming town it is today. They had an opportunity to explore a replica of a 1920’s classroom and search through hidden treasures at the indoor flea market. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road on the south side of Griffin Road. For information, visit www. olddavieschool.org.

alentine’s Day is a time for love and romance. Cooper City couples, along with their guests, celebrated the holiday by renewing their vows during the “Say I Do…Again” ceremony held at the Cooper City Community Center. Some came to celebrate their first anniversaries, while others have come back every year and plan their Valentine’s celebration around it. “Renewing your wedding vows at ‘Say I Do...Again’ is a perfect way to reaffirm your commitment and devotion to the one you love,” said Chris Garcia, Recreation Director for the Cooper City Recreation Department. Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross officiated the ceremony, which included a walk down the aisle, flowers, photo under the wedding arch, customary cutting of the
cake, refreshments, prizes from local businesses, and a certificate of re-affirmation from the City. Each participant brought their favorite wedding photo to display. During the registration process, each couple provided information about themselves, such as how many years they have been married, where they met, and how many children they have. As each one was called up individually to “walk the aisle,” some of this information was shared with others at the event. After reaffirming their vows, the couples danced, took pictures of cutting the cake together and shared stories For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

This is the 14th year that the golf tournament will benefit the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, which helps nearly 1,000 children each year. Campuses provide a haven for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned, giving them a safe place to heal, be supported and grow into healthy, independent adults. Find a New Pet at the Dog Adopt-A-Thon
CAN DO KID
COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
I
f you are thinking about adopting a pet, don’t miss the first annual Dog AdoptA-Thon, sponsored by the Cooper City Recreation Department and the Cooper City Teen Council. On April 22, from 10am1pm, approximately 100 furry friends will be looking for loving homes. The event will be held at Memorial Park, located behind the Community Center and City Hall. “It’s important to adopt dogs simply because of how many there are,” said Kendyl Counts, Teen Council Secretary. “By adopting, we are discouraging the unnecessary breeding of more dogs when there are already so many that desperately need a home. We hope the event will raise awareness of the benefits of adopting pets and help find forever homes for as many dogs as we can.” The Cooper City Teen Council consists of ten members that range in age from middle school to high school. This year, the teens coordinated holiday Bingo at Light Up Cooper City; volunteered at Community Book Swaps, Brunch with Santa, Father-Daughter Dance; and much more. To ensure a successful event, Council members attended other dog-related events to see how they were run. They also met with the owner of Will’s Way Dog Rescue to make sure that the event would meet the needs of the dogs and guests and be safe for everyone involved. The Adopt-A-Thon will have small meet-and-greet

areas, where guests can play with the dogs to see if they are a good fit for the potential owner’s lifestyle. It will give them an opportunity to bond with the animals before making a selection. The dogs are coming from local rescues, including Milo’s Rescue, Good Karma Pet Rescue and Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. They have already been vaccinated. Most can be taken home from the event. Some of the Rescues require house checks, which can be done the day of the event for residents of Cooper City and neighboring communities. Kendyl has been a member of the Cooper City Teen Council for the past five years. She is currently a senior in high school. She now volunteers for many of the events she attended as a child. “I joined the Cooper City Teen Council, because I wanted to become more involved in my community,” said Kendyl. “I now see events such as Trick or Treat from Shop to Shop and the Spring Egg Hunt from a whole new perspective.” Kendyl has a dachshund named Rocket and is hoping to see more dachshunds at the Dog Adopt-a-thon. “We encourage people to come, whether you are actively looking to adopt or just want to see some cute dogs,” said Kendyl. “Maybe you will even fall in love with one, while you are at the event.”

his month, four South Florida girls, ages 10 to 16, will travel to Dublin, Ireland to represent the United States at the 2017 World Irish Dancing Championships. Ten yearold Catherine Kilroy of Davie is one of them. Catherine has been involved in Irish dancing since the age of four. Her older sister Ciara also dances. After going to her sister’s practices and performances, she decided to try it. Catherine trains at the Drake School of Irish Dance. One day, she hopes to perform in a professional show, such as “Riverdance.” “I love Irish dance, because I get to express my Irish culture,” said Catherine. “I also have lots of fun doing it. I love my amazing teachers Karl Drake and Christina Deacy, who have helped me throughout Irish dance.” Catherine will be one of the youngest participants from the state of Florida attending the championship. She qualified at the regional championships held in December 2016 in Baltimore. She will be competing in the Girls Under 11. She has been spending two to three hours a day preparing for the competition. She will be dancing two rounds - one in hard shoes, which make sounds similar to tap shoes, and one in light shoes or “Ghillies,” which are more like ballet shoes. If she places in the top 50 out of 200 dancers in the first two rounds, she will be called up on stage to perform a solo nontraditional set dance. “This is my first world championship, so the pressure is on,” said Catherine. “It will be nerve racking, but I do think it will be a lot of fun. This is like the Olympics of Irish dance. The best dancers from all over the world will be there” Catherine’s mom, Jennette Kilroy, says that Irish dancing

has been a way for Catherine and her older sister Ciara, now a senior in high school, to connect to their Irish heritage. It also requires a lot of time and dedication. “Their dad is a Dublin native and we wanted our children to experience Irish dance and music,” said Kilroy. “Being so dedicated to Irish dance is tough for Catherine. She spends hours practicing and balancing school, homework and her other passion, diving. It has taught her to be well organized and work hard. She has also learned how to both win and lose without giving up. She loves it all, which helps.” Catherine’s grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins live in Dublin and will be cheering for her at the competition.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Buyers Be Aware BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
T
his is an exciting time! Medicine now offers us many choices, in both traditional and non-traditional medicine, that keep us young and feeling outstanding. We have ways to treating weight issues, energy, insomnia and libido; control blood sugar levels; and balance hormones and blood pressure, just to name a few. Since there are so many choices, many questions arise, such as: What is the catch? Where do you go? Who do you see? What is the proper protocol? What is the expertise of the practitioner? These are all important questions that you must ask before making the choice of who to see to repair what ails you. It is fortunate that there are many choices available in choosing different practitioners and treatment plans, but unfortunately many of these choices can have repercussions if the right choice is not made, so buyers should be aware! The “Functional Medicine” umbrella includes hormones, vitamins, minerals, detox, adrenals and thyroid. Practitioners who are board certified in Functional Medicine are specialized, highly trained, and abide by strict guidelines. These guidelines are there to protect you. Board Certified Functional Medicine Practitioners practice according the latest scientific research of why and how a compound works, to whom they should prescribe, what side effects to expect (positive or negative), and which treatments may offer you the best outcome to improve your overall health and wellness. When picking a practitioner for Hormone Therapy, these are some items that should raise an alarm: ▸▸ The practitioner is not board certified in Functional Medicine ▸▸ No laboratory evaluation is needed before and after the treatment ▸▸ Laboratories only check for one specific item, such as testosterone, and not an entire evaluation ▸▸ Medication prescribed is not personalized for you - the same dose given to everyone ▸▸ Less than 10 years of experience ▸▸ Receiving only one hormone instead of balancing what you need. For example, if a woman only receive testosterone, it may create further imbalance, as it is necessary to balance the three hormones that are needed - estrogen, progesterone and testosterone ▸▸ Practitioner doing hormone replacement part time or on the side What a great era we live in by having access to Functional Medicine that focuses on the optimization of health rather than choosing traditional medicine that is simply reactive to illness. But as with everything in life, do not base your decision on advertising, discounted pricing or simply the town in which they practice. Instead, do your due diligence and do your homework on the best person to choose. The Functional Medicine approach to your health could be the best decision you can make if you are in the right hands. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-3848989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine. Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Local Students Participate in Wild Horse Tales Children’s Literacy Event
SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD
BY DEBBY TEICH
H
orses are a common sight in Davie. They are typically ridden, trained, fed, groomed and loved. Students from three local schools recently had the unique opportunity to read to them during the 12th Annual Wild Horse Tales Children’s Literacy event, hosted by the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena. The program promotes literacy by combining live horses with classic horse literature. In February, 350 first graders from Flamingo Elementary, Davie Elementary and Driftwood Elementary got to see and touch a horse at their school. The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club also provided each of them with a hard cover copy of “Little Black, A Pony” by Walter Farley. In the book, a little boy is in love with horses. When he gets into trouble, he relies on Little Black to save him. The story is about friendship and unwavering loyalty. After the students spent five weeks reading the book in class, their Wild Horse Tales reading adventure continued at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena. In the morning, members of the South Florida Trail Riders taught them about horses and how to care for them. The most exciting part of the day for many of them, however, was when they got to read a portion of their book to the horse. Rotary, which has 1.2 million members worldwide, is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club was established in 1971. It currently has 25 members, many of whom have been in the club for over 20 years. They live in Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding areas. The club meets on Wednesdays, at 12:15pm, at the Blue Moon Diner in Cooper City, and welcomes visitors. Most of the meetings include a guest speaker from a community business or charitable organization. Outside of the meetings, members have an opportunity to attend social events with their own members, as well as those in other Rotary clubs in the area.
In addition to Advancing Children’s Literacy, Rotary members participate in a variety of other community service activities, including Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo, and Cooper City’s Founder’s Day Festival. In December, the club sponsors a Children’s Holiday Party. They invite approximately 120 disadvantaged children and school staff members from 12 local schools to the Signature Grand for an event complete with Santa, Disney characters, lunch, music and dancing. Each child receives an age appropriate gift. For information, visit www.daviecoopercity.rotary-clubs.org.

Everglades Eyes Art Competition Is Open to Broward Students
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
M
uch of Broward County is surrounded by canals and waterways, which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. This month, students will have an opportunity to celebrate and honor Earth Day by taking a close look at their environment and capturing the images on paper during the 11th Annual Everglades Eyes children’s art competition, presented at Old Davie School in partnership with Central Broward Water Control District’s (CBWCD) outreach program. The deadline to submit artwork to teachers is April 5. The artwork will be exhibited at the Old Davie School, from April 20 to May 26. An artist’s reception and awards ceremony will be held on April 20, from 5:30pm to 7pm. “It’s hard to believe this is the 11th year of Everglades Eyes,” said Constance Ruppender, Central Broward Water Control District’s 2016 1st place winner Jackson Burd outreach coordinator. “Every year with “Life in the Everglades” we see more art entries and more talent! It’s so rewarding for us to see the community support these young artists. It’s a great way to spread our message that ‘Canals Connect Us!’”
The contest is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. Last year, 62 individual artists showed their work in the exhibit. The artwork must be original. Mediums may include oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic painting, pencil drawings, mixed media, photography and collage. It should capture an image or images of Zoe Petroiany’s “Enchanted Everglades,” Broward County waterways and 2016 2nd place winner may include canals, lakes and the Everglades. People, pets and wildlife images within this context are welcomed. Students may submit their artwork to their teachers, who can contact CBWCD to arrange for pickup of entries. All artwork will be returned after the exhibit closes. Winners will be selected by a jury of community leaders Nesselroth’s “Pinelands,” and art teachers. Cash prizes and Sophia 2016 3rd place winner ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place. There will be a People’s Choice Award the night of the opening on April 20, which includes a ribbon and a special prize. For information on the contest, visit www.centralbrowardwcd. org or call Outreach at 954-432-5110. For information on the Old Davie School, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

Sushiato
4483 Weston Road, Weston 754-223-7923 $$ The concept behind Sushiato, the art of sushi; is different from what we know as Sushi restaurants, because Sushiato presents Sushi with a “Latin Fusion” exotic and tropical flavors mixed with original Japanese cuisine and recipes. Their owners came from Venezuela with this idea and Weston received them open arms sharing the dream of this new concept. Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

A
lmost daily, a child comes in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats, but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks, as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. LEGALLY SPEAKING
How Long Will This Take? BY EVAN BARON
I
can always count on a prospective client to ask me the following two questions at their initial consultation: ▸▸ How long will my divorce take? ▸▸ How much will it cost? In reality, the answer to the second question is directly related to the answer to first question. Since attorney’s fees for divorce cases are based upon time spent by the attorney, the cost will vary from case to case. The more complex the case, the longer it usually takes and therefore the more it will cost. The more litigation in a case, the more time it will take and therefore, the more it will cost. I often tell clients that it is really up to them how quickly a case gets resolved. The quicker they can reach an agreement, the quicker they can be divorced. Once an agreement is signed by the parties, it is literally a matter of weeks until a Final Judgment granting the divorce can be issued by a Judge. However, what if there is not a quick settlement? What if there are issues which need to be litigated? How long can someone expect a divorce to continue until they get to a final resolution? Unfortunately, sometimes the answers to these questions are not in the control of the attorney. In addition, Florida law provides for certain deadlines, which must be followed. When a Petition for Dissolution is filed (the original document), it is usually served upon the other spouse. This process can take a week or more depending on a number of factors, such as the process server’s ability to locate the individual. The Florida Courts have recently converted to E-filing and this has also caused a delay in receiving documentation back from the Clerk’s Office. Once served, the spouse has twenty days to respond in writing. If the response contains a counter-petition, then another 20 days will be allowed for a subsequent response. At this point, the case is considered to be “at issue” and all initial pleadings have been filed. This is just the beginning stages and already approximately 6 weeks have passed. If we need time to litigate any temporary issues, it could be weeks or months before we can obtain a court date. Judge’s dockets are full and it is simply a matter of first come, first served for a court date. No matter how much an attorney tries to get an earlier court date, the Judge only has a limited amount of time due to his/her heavy caseload. So when I am asked, “Why is it taking so long?” I try my best to explain the various factors which cause delay. It is often times frustrating to me, so I can only imagine how frustrating it is for the client. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

’m thinking GREEN! Not just because green is the color of the month – it’s also the color of the money you could be putting in your wallet from the sale of your home. According to Steve Harney:
REAL ESTATE
2015 bestof weston 2016 bestof weston
BY ZONA HORTON, CRS, GRI, E-PRO, REALTOR
Demand is Strong
Foot traffic refers to the number of people who are out, physically looking at homes right now. The latest foot traffic numbers from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) show that the number of buyers out looking for their dream homes in December reached the highest mark since February 2016.
There Is Less Competition
Housing inventory just dropped to a 3.6-month supply, which is well under the 6-month supply needed for a normal housing market. This means, in many areas, there are not enough homes for sale to satisfy the number of buyers in that market. This is good news for home prices; however, additional inventory is about to come to market. “Total housing inventory at the end of December dropped 10.8% (according to NAR), which is the lowest level since NAR began tracking the supply of all housing types in 1999. Inventory has fallen year-over-year for 19 straight months and is at a 3.6-month supply at the current sales pace.” However, there is a pent-up desire for many homeowners to move, as they were unable to sell over the last few years because of a negative equity situation. Homeowners are now seeing a return to positive equity, as real estate values have increased over the last four years. Many of these homes will be coming to market soon. Also, new construction of single-family homes is again beginning to increase. A study by Harris Poll revealed that 41% of buyers would prefer to buy a new home, while only 21% prefer an existing home (38% had no preference).
There Will Never Be a Better Time to Move-Up
If you are moving up to a larger, more expensive home, consider doing it now. Prices are projected to appreciate by 4.7% over the next 12 months according to CoreLogic. If you are moving to a higher priced home, it will wind up costing you more in raw dollars (both in down payment and mortgage payment) if you wait. You can also lock in your 30-year housing expense with an interest rate around 4% right now. Rates are projected to rise by half a percentage point by the end of 2017.
How Do Floridians Feel
Look at the reason you decided to sell in the first place and determine whether it is worth waiting. According to a newly released University of Florida survey, 50.1% of Floridians feel it is a good time to buy a house. The U.S. Census Bureau found that the Florida homeownership rate dropped 8 percentage points to 64.4 as of 2016 – the lowest since the government started tracking the rate in 1984. Florida’s homeownership rate peaked at 72.4% in 2006 on the beginning fringe of the Great Recession.

Embark on a Rewarding Career at BSO ASK THE SHERIFF
BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL
A
s young children, many of us dream firefighters. I remember spending many a childhood afternoon and weekend imitating public safety professionals. With toy handcuffs at the ready or a small garden hose standing in as a fire hose, my friends and I role-played for hours as we rushed to help those in need. We chased down the bad guys who needed to be brought to “justice.” For me, that childhood passion translated into a long and fruitful career in law enforcement. For nearly four decades, I’ve had the good fortune of performing challenging, yet rewarding, work where I’ve made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people with whom I’ve come into contact. Yet, while law enforcement officers and firefighters are the public face of public safety, there are many other positions that are less visible but no less important. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is looking for more good men and women to join our team in the
critically-important positions of E911 Communications operators, detention deputies and Child Protective Investigations Section (CPIS) investigators. Communications operators are the lifeline between the community and first responders. These unsung heroes do far more than just answer 911 phone calls – they are the quarterbacks of public safety. They offer lifesaving instructions and provide a calming presence while obtaining the critical information necessary to direct emergency response teams to where they need to go. These workers undergo months of intensive training to learn the ins and outs of public safety – and their impact is immeasurable. The same can be said of our detention deputies. Each day, these men and women are charged not only with maintaining order and discipline among detainees in our jails – the 12th largest jail system in the nation – but also ensuring the safety and security of the detainees, the public and other fellow law enforcement and detention personnel. As rehabilitation is a top priority at BSO, detention deputies also have the unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of detainees because of their close and frequent interactions with them. Finally, BSO’s CPIS investigators dedicate their careers to ensuring our community’s children are safer and more secure. These professionals investigate allegations of child abuse, abandonment or

neglect – and work with families for the protection of their children. They also provide assistance to improve parenting capacities and strengthen families with a focus on enhancing child safety. All three of these positions at BSO are tremendously rewarding careers. BSO also offers competitive salaries, an outstanding work environment and amazing benefits, including low-cost medical insurance, retirement pension and generous vacation leave. At BSO, you also have the opportunity to work for the largest fully-accredited public safety agency and one of the most respected in the country. With that comes bountiful opportunities for advancement. Don’t settle for a job – embark on a career. Come join us at BSO and make a difference in your community. Explore these and many other opportunities – and apply online – at jobs.sheriff.org. For information, visit sheriff.org.

Make Mealtime Memorable at Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner
B
etween work, school, sports and other activities, most families are hard-pressed to find time to cook a healthy family meal, let alone sit down together to enjoy it. Two popular restaurants are bringing families together for memorable meal times. Both Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner specialize in serving traditional comfort foods, as well as gourmet delicacies, that taste just as good as home-cooked, if not better.
What’s new on the menu? We’ve added five
new items to our breakfast menu. The “Super Mess” features eggs scrambled with chopped sausage, ham, bacon and potatoes and topped with our homemade sausage gravy. Another great choice is the Corned Beef Hash and Cheese Omelet. Both items are served with hashbrowns and toast. Fruit lovers will want to try our new Blueberry Pancakes, Belgium Waffle with Strawberry Topping, or the Banana and Walnut Pancakes.
IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
BY STACEY BOMSER
Owner Sam Wong shares the secret to running two successful diners which have been satisfying hungry diners for well over a decade.
Please describe your restaurants. Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner offer good home-style cooking at an affordable price. We serve classic hearty breakfast cuisine as well as a mixture of classic American dishes, seafood specialties and Latin-inspired entrees. What can diners expect to find when they visit Weston Diner or Blue Moon Diner? Diners can expect to receive quality
food with large portions at a very reasonable price. We are definitely not your typical diners. We use the diner name, but once inside our restaurants look like a comfy family-friendly restaurant. We care about our customers and will do anything we can to make your dining experience an enjoyable one.
Why do you focus on fresh, home-style cooking? We realize that eating well on a
budget can be a challenge for many families. However, both of our restaurants have a consistent focus on fresh food and great value. Our soups are homemade daily. Every Friday we serve New England Seafood Chowder that is to die for! We also use top quality ingredients to prepare our food. All of our burgers and our meatloaf are made from Angus ground chuck. We use choice grade beef for our Churrasco steaks. We use fresh salmon, never frozen, for our salmon dishes. We also use chunk light tuna for all of our tuna salads, and the list goes on and on.
Do you have any specialty dishes you are known for? For breakfast you can’t beat our huge omelets or “The Mess,” bacon, ham, sausage, cheese, and potatoes scrambled and served with toast. For lunch, I recommend any of our oversized salads or our crispy fish and chips. For dinner, which is served only at Blue Moon Diner, one of our signature dishes is the Seafood Stuffed Grouper, but you can’t go wrong with any of our fresh fish specials. We are also known for our homemade soups like our Seafood Chowder.
What distinguishes your restaurants from other casual dining establishments? Our goal was to
create restaurants where the food is fresh, delicious and so affordable that you could come by and dine every day. Both Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner serve over 20 breakfast specials starting at just $3.99 on weekdays from 7-11am and over 30 lunch specials served daily from 11am to 3pm. We have daily dinner specials at Blue Moon Diner starting at $7.99 with options ranging from seafood to chicken to steak. We also offer a $1.99 kid’s meal from Tuesday through Sunday after 3pm. Kid’s meals are served with a soft drink and cookie or ice-cream.
How long have you been in business? Weston Diner has been open for 14 years and Blue Moon Diner for six years. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Weston Diner and Blue Moon Diner? We offer take-out, delivery and
catering. We have two separate dining rooms at Blue Moon Diner that can accommodate any special occasion or party. Weston Diner is located at 4484 Weston Road (at the corner of Weston Road and Griffin Road) and Blue Moon Diner is at 10076 Griffin Road (at the corner of Griffin Road and Nob Hill Road/ Palm Avenue). The Weston Diner is open daily for breakfast and lunch from 7am-3pm. The Blue Moon Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is open 7am-9pm Tuesday through Sunday. There is no dinner service on Monday.

APRIL 2017 | OUR CITY DAVIE
T
he American Red Cross, Davie Fire Rescue, CERT members, volunteers from Nova Southeastern University and Davie Community Services joined together to offer free smoke alarms and deliver fire prevention information in places we know have a high chance of fires. This campaign was in the Orange Park, Cheron Village and Western Hills neighborhoods on Saturday, March 4. The group met and organized the teams that went out into the neighborhoods at the Orange Park Community Center in Davie. The event started at 8:30am and continued until the last alarm was installed. Breakfast and lunch was provided by the American Red Cross. It was certainly an outstanding show of support. Chief Downey, Councilwoman Susan Starkey and the Mayor were on hand to launch the event. The 80th Orange Blossom Festival was a huge success and everyone was treated to fine weather for the parade and a weekend of fun and activities. I was thrilled to bring back the Miss Orange Blossom Pageant and to present our lovely court of Queens in both the parade and at the rodeos. Congratulations to our young ladies of the royal court: Tiny Miss – Olivia Solana, 4; Little Miss – Vanessa Gonzalez, 7; Jr. Miss – Sophia Nardi, 9; Miss Jr. Teen – Cheyenne Johnson, 12; Miss Teen – Jena Iten, 15; and Miss Orange Blossom – Taylor Jones, 17. If you have passed the site for the Davie Farm Park on Shot Gun Rd., you will notice activity. The survey has been completed and the tree and brush removal is continuing. FDOT has planted trees along the western fence line bordering I-75 and dirt has been delivered to begin the berm, so we can plant a line of trees on the south fence line. We are anticipating a ground breaking this year. I am so excited that everyone is catching Farm Park fever. This will be an exciting way to showcase the agricultural and equestrian past, present and future, not only of Davie, but for all of South Florida. I can’t believe that the clocks have once again jumped forward for spring and that the days are getting longer. That means more kids will be outside, so please drive cautiously. With increased traffic, it would be so nice if everyone would be patient, slow down and make our roads safe again! Too many people are rushing and racing and being inconsiderate of others on the road. Try leaving a few minutes earlier for work or play and arrive alive. Don’t forget our April events and plan to join Mr. Bunny at our spring egg hunt at Bamford Sports Complex on April 15; Festival of the Americas on April 22 at the Rodeo Arena; and Classic Car Show at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and under the roof of the Rodeo Arena on April 30. Details are available on the Davie website: www.davie-fl.gov. There is also the Project Stable Horse show at the Arena on April 2. The gates open at 11am; horse show starts at 12noon and game at 2:30pm. The classes will include English and Western, as well as time and games. The Mayor will be judging a special class, so come out and enjoy the fun! For the full show program, visit the Project Stable web site. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1030.
Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over Farah Tejpar, MD the past decade. Cleveland Clinic Florida In 2016, it was Sports Health Specialist estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, sports health specialist, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. OXXO Care Cleaners Cares About Your Clothes AND The Environment
O
XXO Care Cleaners is known for its convenience, quality and good service, but did you know it is also environmentally friendly? Owner Richard De Stefano shares more about the OXXO system and how it is improving the dry cleaning experience.
Please describe your business. OXXO Care Cleaners is more than a dry cleaner, we think about the convenience of the client, while taking care of their clothes and the environment. How are you environmentally-friendly? OXXO Care Cleaners is 100% green. We work with a program called Green Earth. All of our products are biodegradable and non-toxic, which make them better for your clothes. The clothes are hand-ironed, which causes significantly less damage especially to delicate buttons. Our drying system is all done with vapor. This guarantees that your clothes are perfectly clean and sanitized. We go through every garment we receive in detail to make sure our clients are 100% satisfied and their clothes are spotless when they leave our store. What convenience services do you offer customers? Once you join
the OXXO system, you will have an OXXO card in your wallet, which will allow you to use our teller machine 24-hours-a-day. As a client, you will be able to remove your clothes once they are ready by using this system. You can also leave your clothes at your convenience, as we have a drop box that is available 24-hours-a-day.
What differentiates OXXO Care Cleaners from other dry cleaning stores? In February we introduced
an application for smart phones, where the customer can live the OXXO experience. You will not have to guess if your clothes are ready or not. This app has multiple functions and you will have a direct connection with the store, which will make the process more efficient. Customers will waste less time on trips to and pickups from the dry cleaner.
How else is OXXO Care Cleaners utilizing the latest technology?
BUSINESS SECTION SPOTLIGHT HEAD
BY STACEY BOMSER
OXXO Care Cleaners is at the forefront of systems and technology. Our production system is interlaced. This guarantees that the garment, from the time it is received at the counter until it leaves the cashier, is fully monitored at its cleaning levels, where it is almost impossible for a garment to be lost.
When did you open? My business partner, Juan Carlos Leon, and I
opened the Davie OXXO Care Cleaners in 2013. We also have a location in Weston. OXXO Care Cleaners is conveniently located at 1849 South University Drive in the Town and Country Shoppes Plaza. It is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 7pm and on Saturday from 8am to 5pm. Customers also have 24-hour access for dropoff and pick-up through the OXXO system.
