Summer Vacation Is Coming to an End

L

ike most of our readers , my family and I took

some time off this summer to unwind and recharge. We spent quality time together as a family, explored new things and re-visited familiar sites, met new people and got reacquainted with old friends. Although we may still be in vacation-mode, it’s time to start getting ready to go Back-to-School. It’s time to download that school supply list and stock up on notebook paper, pencils and erasers, as well as brand new backpacks and lunch boxes. It’s also time to tackle that to-do list: school sports physicals, back-to-school haircuts, and register for after school activities. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final carefree days of summer with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to the backto-school craziness once again. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

SW Ranches Residents Gather for Building Dedication and Birthday Celebration By Debby Teich

I

t has been

more than two years since the Town Hall in Southwest Ranches moved from a trailer on Dykes Road to a new building on Griffin Road. Last month, over 100 residents and dignitaries gathered to officially dedicate the building. They Council Member Doug McKay also celebrated the Town’s 14th birthday. The new building is centrally located in Southwest Ranches at 13400 Griffin Road. It contains administrative offices for Town Hall personnel and council members, as well as council chambers. There is an herb garden in the back. There is also a horse coral in the front, just in case residents decide to visit on horseback. “The space is perfect,” said Sandy Luongo, General Services Manager. “It reflects our rural lifestyle.” After Mayor Jeff Nelson gave a speech, he intro-

duced all of the dignitaries. Mayor Nelson, Council Member Steve Breitkreuz, Council Member Freddy Fisikelli, Vice Mayor Gary Jablonski and Council Member Doug McKay lifted the cloth that covered the bronze dedication plaque. Each of their names was listed on the plaque, as well as former Council Member Astor Knight. Other names listed on the plaque include: Town Attorney Keith M Poliakoff; Town Attorney Emeritus

Teen Ambassador Program Is Seeing Applications for Upcoming Year By Debby Teich

Casey Guarasci attended Green Day’s American Idiot at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Teen Ambassador program.

August 2014 | Our City Davie

T

he B roward Center for the

Performing Arts is seeking high school students with an interest in the performing arts/writing for its Teen Ambassador program. Cooper City student Casey Guarasci, 16, participated in the program last year and plans to apply again. Applications are due on August 29. Up to 24 students will be accepted into the program, which runs from September 2014 to May 2015. It includes guest speakers, master classes, back stage tours, meet and greets with professionals in various career tracks connected to the arts, and more. The students attend performances presented at the Broward Center and its affiliated venues. They also provide reviews for postings on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and/or BrowardCenter.org. The students receive community service hours for their participation. To be considered for a position, students must attend a high school in Broward, Palm Beach or Dade County; attend one meeting per month at the Broward Center; attend and review at least one performance per month for which tickets will be provided by the Broward Center; maintain a minimum “B” average throughout the school year; have access to a computer and have at least one social media account. They must also complete an application, which includes an essay about why they will be a valuable member of

the program, as well as their experiences or feelings for or about live performing arts. Casey plans to pursue a career in the performing arts. She is drawn to the arts for a variety of reasons. “What I love about the performing arts is the magic of creating and helping tell a story,” said Casey. “I love the way that everyone works together to put up something that can make people forget about their daily lives to go on a journey with us.” Although Casey is still not sure if she prefers to be back stage or on stage, her experience last year brought her one step closer to figuring it out. “In the program, I was able to talk to different people in all forms of the arts, from Broadway producers, to local stage managers, and even some actors from the touring productions,” she added. “We were able to see the shows that came to the Broward Center, give our input, and participate in amazing experiences, such as being on headset during shows, going on tours, and even walking across the stage as a flower presenter during certain dance performances. I got so much out of the experience. I got to do so many things I would have never have had access to without being a Teen Ambassador.” For information, visit www.browardcenter.org/teenambassador or send an email to teenambassador@browardcenter.org.

Touch-A-Truck Event Is A Success By Debby Teich

F

ive -year old Vincent Martinez loves to visit construc-

tions sites to watch the trucks in action. Like many kids, he has always dreamed of driving one. Vincent recently attended the 16th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event, where he had an opportunity to see, touch, and explore a construction truck, as well as some other big trucks and vehicles. He also met some of the people who drive them. “It was awesome,” said Vincent. “I actually got to climb inside one of the trucks and sit in the driver’s seat!” There were more than 30 trucks and vehicles on display at the Cooper City Sports Complex. They were from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. The fire and police departments in Cooper City brought out some of their trucks, cars and equipment. Waste Management showcased one of their natural gas powered trucks. There were cranes and other construction trucks, utility pump trucks, SWAT trucks, and much more. “The Cooper City Touch-a-Truck event was a huge success,” said Simone B. James, Facility Coordinator for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. “Over 500 children and families joined the recreation staff to explore, climb, and honk the horns of construction, military, and rescue vehicles. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The rain held off until after the event and the light cloud cover and “cooling station” kept participants cool and comfortable during the event. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.” Jake Walton brought his three sons to the event for the third consecutive year. “The kids love pretending to drive all of the vehicles,” said Walton. “I think I enjoy the event just as much as my kids do.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

Community to Gather for Flag Retirement Ceremony By Debby Teich

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led a Flag Retirement Ceremony in 2013

F

or more than 200 years , the American flag has been the

symbol of our nation’s strength and unity. There are even Federal laws that stipulate many aspects of flag etiquette. On September 6, area residents will have an opportunity to learn about some of the general guidelines at Cooper City’s Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, held at the Cooper City Community Center, from 5pm to 7pm. The flag ceremony begins at 6pm. All ages are invited to attend the complimentary patriotic event. The event will be held in honor of Patriot Day, which falls on September 11. More than 100 people are expected to attend, including many Veterans. Local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will demonstrate proper etiquette for the American flag, including the correct way to fold it. Participants will also learn how to properly dispose of a flag. When it becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it

should be replaced with a new flag. The old flag should be “retired” with dignity and respect, which consists of burning it. Flags will be collected on site for future retirement. Nathan Green has a worn flag that is ready for retirement. He plans to bring it to the event. “I have had the flag for more than 25 years and it is time to get a new one,” said Green, who is a Vietnam Veteran. “I want to make sure I know the proper way to dispose of it.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

Snapshots from a Superstar Summer at TAG USA Gymnastics

T

here ’ s always something new and

exciting going on at TAG USA Gymnastics. This summer, the boys and girls teams had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train alongside

former US Olympians. Campers got a chance to hang out with these superstars as well. With the school year getting set to start, TAG USA is putting the final touches on two exciting new programs – a

two-a-day team training for homeschooled elite athletes and a new after-school pick-up service. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening at TAG USA Gymnastics:

Olympians Visit TAG USA Gymnastics. TAG USA Gymnastics has become

known as the “second home to Olympians” as Nastia Liukin and Jonathan Horton visited the gym. Horton, a 2008 Silver medalist, visited the gym in June and worked out with the boys team. In July, Liukin, a 2008 Gold medalist, helped train the TAG girls team. Both stars hung out, took pictures and signed autographs with campers in the TAG Sports Camp and team athletes.

Former Olympian Hired as Director of Gymnastics Alicia Sacramone (center), captain of Team USA at the 2008 Olympics, has joined TAG USA Gymnastics as the new Director of Gymnastics for the Girls Optional – Elite team. Alicia is joined by Kristina Comforte (right), former coach at UCLA and associate of Mihai Brestyan. Brestyan is a world renowned gymnastics coach who trained Sacramone as well as 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Aly Raisman.

TAG Starts New Team Training Program.

This summer, TAG USA Gymnastics introduced its new twoa-day training program designed to provide compulsory and upper level gymnasts with extra time in the gym, while also completing their school work. Team athletes can now train twice a day, starting at 8:30am, under the direction of coaches Alicia Sacramone and Arno van Werven. Gymnasts will complete their schooling through the Florida Virtual School program.

TAG USA Gymnast Maia Zoldan (left), a Level 10 sophomore, has been training at Brestyan’s American Gymnastics Club gym in Boston this summer alongside Raisman, who is training to qualify for the 2016 summer games.

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. TAG USA has championship girls and boys gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling teams, as well as a competitive cheer team. Campers Enjoy Action-Packed Experience. With more than 250 children

enrolled, TAG USA’s Summer Sports Camp was more popular than ever! Weekly themes welcomed special guests including Olympians Nastia Liukin, Jordyn Wieber and Jon Horton, as well as pirates, magicians, animals, and characters from the popular movie Frozen.

D

o any of these apply to you ? I f so, detox may

be for you! ▸▸ You are planning to get pregnant in the next year. (It is NOT recommended to detoxify once pregnancy has been achieved.) ▸▸ You are a woman with a history of taking birth control pills. ▸▸ You rely on coffee to get going. ▸▸ You are experiencing symptoms of toxin overload: (brain fog, bloating, headaches, migraines, menstrual irregularities, fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty losing weight, acne, and sugar cravings). ▸▸ You have difficulty losing/maintaining your weight. ▸▸ You have a family history of cancer, stroke, diabetes, auto-immune disease or thyroid disease. ▸▸ You drink alcoholic beverages more than once per week. ▸▸ You are healthy and want to be even healthier. ▸▸ You just want to FEEL better. Detox, short for detoxification, is the removal of potentially toxic substances from the body. Although detox was formerly thought of as a form of drug rehabilitation, used to treat alcoholism or other drug addiction, the term also refers to diet methods of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body. Toxins are everywhere in our environment: radiation, pesticides, processed ingredients, food additives, industrial chemicals, and polluted air we breathe. Each year the amount of toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing toxins) we are exposed to increase as new chemical formulations are developed. Unfortunately, these toxins in our environment can build up in our bodies, leaving us feel tired, achy, run down and more susceptible to disease. In fact, toxin overload is associated with a variety of diseases, including chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroid conditions, cancer, heart disease, and auto-immune disease. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Fortunately, our bodies are resilient and can bounce back into the right direction with a little help. The 28 Day Detox Plan is your “reset” button. This plan has the ability to help clear your body of disease-causing toxins. It will help you get back on track and feeling good. Twenty-eight days is the perfect length of time for a detox diet plan. This allows for a slower pace as compared to other shorter detox programs and will not shock or overwhelm the body. When there are an excessive amount of toxins in the body, the body’s natural detoxification capability can be overwhelmed. The detox program allows for the body to function optimally in order to prevent toxins from building up. Ultimately, it causes these toxins to be expelled from the body. This process allows for the body to be “reset”. The detox program relies heavily on nutrition for your body to work optimally. It is the same principal as using high octane fuel for your car to run efficiently. It is important to fuel your organs and body system with the right nutrition and supplements for optimal functioning for toxins to be expelled from the body. What are some of the things you experience after completing the 28 day Detox Plan? ▸▸ Weight loss ▸▸ Increase in stamina, energy & vitality ▸▸ Reduction in food cravings ▸▸ Reduction of allergy symptoms ▸▸ Radiant complexion ▸▸ More efficient digestion ▸▸ And much more Call 954-384-8989 to schedule a complimentary consultation to see if the 28 Detox Program is for you. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Their practice Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. Davie Residents Had Good Old-Fashioned Fun at the Downtown Hoedown By Debby Teich

A

rea residents had an opportunity to show off their singing talents and

participate in other fun activities at the 2nd Annual Downtown Hoedown. The event, which was presented by the Town of Davie and the South Florida Cloggers, was held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. One of the highlights of the Hoedown was “Davie Idol.” Twenty-two contestants, ages 6 and up, sang a variety of music, such as Whitney Houston, country, Broadway and more. Celebrity judges included: Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Kiss Country 99.9’s Darlene Evans, Y100’s Chris Cruz and Love 94’s Rob Vango. Three winners received a trophy, orchid plant and gift cards to local businesses. Hoedown guests also enjoyed performances by 60 of the South Florida Cloggers, as well as line dancing, mechanical bull riding, carnival games, bounce houses, a barbeque dinner, silent auction, raffles, and more. Every 30 minutes, a drawing revealed the name of a South Florida Clogger, who was the target of a pie throwing contest. Mayor Paul presented the Cloggers with a proclamation that designated June 13th as South Florida Clogger’s Day in Davie. “Thanks to the Town of Davie and all of the sponsors, the Hoedown was a huge success,” said Rebecca Stone Vetter, founder of the South Florida Cloggers. “We look forward to another great event next year.” For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov or www.SouthFloridaCloggers.com.

Learn about Japanese Culture at Young At Art Museum’s Exhibits By Debby Teich

A

rea residents will

have an opportunity to learn about some of the ways that Japanese culture has impacted art by visiting two exhibits at Young At Art Museum in Davie, as well as a Back-toSchool party. Through September 7, the Museum is hosting JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters. The international traveling exhibition showcases the history of Japan’s affinity for and fame of its worldFIU students Shalisha and Shonda Witherspoon renowned and beloved characat the JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters exhibit. ters, beginning in the 1950s with Astro Boy through to the 2000s with Pokémon and more. “We are thrilled to host JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters, a brilliant international exhibition that will appeal to all ages, from young children to serious anime and manga animation buffs and Nintendo enthusiasts,” said Young At Art Museum Executive Director/CEO Mindy Shrago. Organized by the Japan Foundation and Consulate General of Japan in Miami, the exhibition has been engaging museum-goers with drawings, life-size figures, videos and other merchandise. There are characters from manga, anime, and the Kawaii (cute) culture for which Hello Kitty! is the poster cat. There are also electronic superstars, such as Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers, and flash hits, including the hand-held Tamagotchi. Visitors can create “stop-motion animation” using an iPad for backdrops and props. They can also draw inspiration from a Japanese Hello Kitty!-themed room to design and arrange their own Hello Kitty spaces,

using Kawaii “cute” items and more Through January 5, Museum visitors can also enjoy Colorful Rebellion – Seventh Nightmare. Famed Japanese pop fashion designer Sebastian Masuda’s first oneman exhibition is an immersive experience of plastic toys, stuffed animals, ribbons, fake fur and other fabrics surrounding an empty bed, which Masuda describes as a kind of “self-portrait.” He debuted the exhibit in February at the Armory Show in New York City to rave reviews and sold-out crowds. “Having Sebastian Masuda return to the YAA with his first one-man show is like the icing on the cake, as we pay homage to all the illustration, fashion and electronic game trends that have evolved from Japanese culture and become worldwide movements in art,” added Shrago. On August 8, YAA will host a Back to School Party—J-pop style! Visitors will enjoy hands-on art activities inspired by Japanese Pop Culture, with art stations including Kawaii-Cute Bookmark Making, Pom! Pom! Pencil Toppers, Go! Harajuku! Keychains, and more. They can dance to the Japanese beat with J-pop tunes in the CultureScapes gallery and participate in the Rock, Scissors, Paper competition tournament for students, parents, and teachers. They can also join Yumina Kaneko Myers for an interactive presentation to learn about a day in the life of a Japanese student. Young At Art is located at 751 SW 121 Ave. in Davie. For information, call 954-424-0085 or visit YoungAtArtMuseum.org. Colorful Rebellion – Seventh Nightmare

T

he M iami Dolphins rookie class , along

with General Manager Dennis Hickey, recently coached, refereed and ran a fun fitness circuit for Special Olympics athletes at University School’s Gloria Dei field. “It’s important for us and it’s been an emphasis for the Dolphins to be giving back to our community, and being involved, and making an impact,” said Hickey. “Our guys have done a great job with that this offseason and we look forward to continuing that.” The rookies put on their coaching hats and worked with approximately 45 Special Olympics athletes as they participated in flag football matches and fitness stations. The Special Olympics athletes ranged in age from teens to young adults. According to Hickey, everyone had a great time. “I think the athletes are having as much fun as the (Special Olympics) athletes out here,” said Hickey. All 31 of the Dolphins rookies participated in the event, including Dolphins first-round draft pick Ja’Wuan James and second-round draft pick Jarvis Landry. “This was my first time working with the Special Olympics group and it was fun,” said James. “It’s great coming out here with all the other rookies and just having a good time. Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces, being excited, and us celebrating with them -- it was pretty cool.” “It means the world to see the character of these guys in the situation they are in and be able to show support to these athletes and give back,’ said Landry. “I think that’s the biggest thing and the biggest factor right now, and I can’t say enough about the Dolphins organization.”

Davie Police Honor Student Citizens of the Month By Debby Teich

S

tudents are often recognized for academics

and sports. For approximately 20 years, the Davie Police Department’s Student Citizen of the Month program has also been recognizing them for their outstanding civic and leadership qualities. Approximately 12 public and private schools participate in the program for elementary and middle school students. Six times a year, from October to April, administrators and teachers from each school choose two students that exhibit good citizenship by helping others in the class and community. “The program recognizes students for helping others,” said Sergeant Ed Smith, PIO for the Davie Police Department. “It allows the teachers and school administration to have a unique way to reward students for demonstrating these qualities. It allows the community to see the positive impact that many students have on their individual schools and the community as a whole. Finally, it’s a way to show the parents of these students what a great job they are doing by raising such caring children.” The winners attended an award ceremony at the Davie Police Department. The Mayor and Chief of Police handed out the certificates and other gifts from local business partners, such as school supplies, pizza, and smoothies. “This program could not be successful without the cooperation of the school administrators, teachers, and parents,” said Smith. “In addition to the students, we want to thank them for the job they do.” Elementary or middle schools interested in participating in the Student Citizen of the Month program should contact Dottie Ross at the Davie Police Department at 954-693-8378.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

would ever want to do in their lifetime is hire an attorney. Except for the purchase of a home or business, for the most part the hiring of an attorney is necessary only when a crisis occurs. It could be due to an accident, a run in with the law, a death in the family or a divorce. On occasion, individuals may feel as if an attorney is not really necessary. Unfortunately, handling a legal matter without advice from an attorney can often mean unwanted results. So, how does someone decide if they need an attorney? And, if so, who should they hire? Recently, I have met with several individuals who have either attempted to handle their particular matter without the assistance of an attorney or they have been unhappy with the representation they have received from the attorney they in fact did hire. In most of these situations, I was not able to assist them in “undoing” the unwanted result. For the most part, we do not get a “do over” in court. Once a decision is made by a judge, it is in most instances a final decision. The fact that an individual feels that his/her attorney did not properly represent him/ her will not be considered grounds to overturn the court’s decision. Neither will the fact that a person was unrepresented in court. Unless you are prepared to file an appeal, most people get one chance to present their case and obtain their desired results. If the decision has been made to retain an attorney, how do you choose the one that is right for you? In my opinion, you should look for someone who has experience in the field of law that concerns your case. In most instances, however, the most important factor is cost. In some areas of practice, the total fee for representation can be determined at the beginning of the case. In criminal matters, there is usually a set fee quoted; depending on the severity of the offense charged. In personal injury matters, fees are usually based upon the amount recovered, with a percentage going to the attorney. These fees are called contingency fees.

In family law matters, fees are usually determined by the time necessary to finalize the case. This often presents a problem when I discuss fees at my initial consultation. Understandably, a prospective client wants to know what a divorce is going to cost. I explain that since my fees are based upon my time, I cannot predict the total fee unless I know the number of hours a case will take to get to completion. Not knowing the total cost of representation can make a person insecure. A retainer or down payment is required to get the case started. It is made clear to the new client that this is only a down payment and is not necessarily the total cost. Each case is different and each attorney may have different billing practices. It is best to “shop around” and find the attorney who is best suited for your particular set of circumstances. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird, and Monsters Inc.) and the toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are 300 dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care.

After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar, which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then, it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients, as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call (954) 236-3434.

great pastime of many homeowners is to tune

into the latest episode of “Property Brothers” on HGTV. While the team prides themselves in total renovations, a mere face lift/update may be the more cost-effective approach for most Sellers. Eighty-five percent of homebuyers do NOT care to renovate. Buyers would rather pay the higher price for an updated home -- folding the cost of your updating efforts into their mortgage. (Sellers spending $7,000 may be able to increase the price $35,000-$40,000 -- as per a local home stager in South Florida.)

Paint

The most impactful and cost-effective first step is PAINT. If doors and trim look old and outdated, give them a fresh coat of sparkling white glossy paint. It will make the entire home look cleaner and more contemporary.

Create a Bigger Space

To make a room appear larger, paint it the same color as an adjacent room. If you have a small kitchen and dining room, a seamless look will make both rooms feel like one big space. If your blinds or draperies are the same color as the paint, the seamless look and feel will be extended.

De-clutter Rooms

Overcrowding a room with “Paul-Bunyan” sized furniture will only make the room appear small and cramped. Wall shelving can add depth to make a room feel larger, but be sure to paint the back of the shelves the same color as the walls to create a feeling of depth.

Create Serenity – Especially in the Bedrooms and Baths

Create a relaxing setting with luxurious linens and soft colors that will make a potential homebuyer want to sit back and relax. Creating a spa-like feeling in the bathrooms using white towels, white rugs and a white robe hanging on the back of the door will extend your Zen setting.

Make Awkward Spaces Functional

I sold many homes with lofts or landings at the top of a stairway. The loft can easily be turned into a second family room with soft sofas using peaceful colors. The space could also be turned into a quiet homework or reading area. This tranquil space adds value to the home and is a feature potential buyers are sure to remember.

Build a Lasting Impression

Clear out the clutter and add pops of color. How you live in your home and how you stage your home for sale are two different concepts. Pack away as many personal items as possible. When a Buyer sees that a Seller has started packing, he knows you are serious about relocating and that you may be more amenable to negotiations. A Seller should be open to recommendations made by their Real Estate agent who could also recommend a Home Staging professional. Both agent and stager are looking at your home with objectivity and care. The time and money spent to create that serene, clean space will reap great rewards to both buyer and seller, and the Seller will get a better return on his investment. igament injuries to the ankle are more com -

mon in children than previously thought. The ligaments connect bones together. When the ligament stretches beyond its elastic limit, partial or complete tears develop. The most common ligament injury in the ankle is due to a twisting injury of the foot down and in. This can occur from sports, twisting the foot under the leg in a hole or even falling off of a shoe. These injuries may be associated with mild growth plate injuries. Usually the ligament injury or the growth plate is the more dominant problem. A thorough evaluation will best determine the injured part and the extent of it. Because the ligaments in the ankle connect below the growth plate it was more commonly thought that growth plates are weaker than ligaments and when twisting occurs the growth plate usually gets injured. With the increased participation in sports at a very young age the frequency of ankle ligament injuries has been rising. Signs and symptoms include low-grade to diffuse swelling present along the front part of the outer ankle. Swelling may be present on the inner ankle in severe outer ankle sprains. It may also be present with an inner ankle sprain where the foot turns down and in. Symptoms also include immediate difficulty weightbearing. Discoloration to the ankle and foot may develop a few days later. Immediate evaluation is necessary to determine the extent of the injury. The foot, ankle and leg are examined to determine which ligament is injured and the degree of injury associated with it. Testing of the ligament’s integrity is also performed to further assess the damage. Examination of the growth plates, tendons and bones around the ankle are also performed to determine any associated injuries. X-rays are necessary to determine if there are any associated bone injuries. Growth plates are evaluated to see if they are out of position. MRIs are rarely necessary as a good clinical exam usually provides all the necessary information in formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. An MRI is done only if there is suspicion of a cartilage injury that cannot be assessed via a clinical examination or x-ray. Immediate care is necessary to prevent any long-term problems. Mild injuries associated with minimal swelling may be treated with rest, ice, elevation and an ankle brace. Moderate injuries in which a partial tear has occurred may necessitate immobilization for two to six weeks in a removable boot or hard cast. Severe injuries need to be immobilized in a hard fiberglass cast for four to six weeks to allow the ligaments to heal properly. Physical therapy following bracing or cast removal is necessary to improve muscle strength, ankle stability, joint proprioception and to restore complete ankle motion. If left untreated, chronic instability commonly develops. Recurring twisting injuries then occur with minimal stress. This will require chronic use of an ankle brace and physical therapy. In most cases surgery would be necessary to surgically reconstruct the ligaments in the ankle and allow a full return to activity. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. ask the Sheriff

Crime Reduction through Crisis Intervention Training By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

N

early one in six young Americans will cope

with mental illness in their lifetime, but due to the broad nature of the illnesses, many go undiagnosed or untreated. Today, approximately 66 percent of young people with mental health issues are not seeking or receiving treatment. Addressing this problem is one way we can reduce the growing number of incidents of violence, such as school shootings, and prevent them from happening here. The Broward Sheriff’s Office practices proactive policing and is increasing the number of deputies with Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. As Sheriff, my goal is continuously to expand BSO’s CIT training to provide deputies with the tools they need to assist those struggling with mental health concerns better. CIT training is based on the nationally recognized “Memphis Model” of crisis intervention which was established to develop a more intelligent, more effective and safer approach to mental health crises. It is community based and is offered in partnership with organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition and others. These partnerships connect law enforcement and the community together for common goals of safety, understanding and service for the mentally ill and their families. Since its inception in 2002, approximately 1,000 deputies and officers from various agencies have gone through CIT training. All of our emergency communication 9-1-1 operators also receive a specialized CIT course to assess emergency calls better. BSO currently has more than 280 active CIT deputies, a significant increase since January 2013. I remain committed to seeing this number increase each year. Thanks to cooperation between our community partners, the number of CIT courses available to all Broward County law enforcement agencies has increased significantly this year. BSO is on track to reach my goal of certifying an additional 150 CIT deputies by the end of 2014, which will double the number of CIT BSO deputies available to respond to crisis calls. The CIT course includes 40 hours of intensive training in behavioral health issues (mental illness and substance abuse), as well as treatments and psychotropic medications. Topics include sessions on the homeless, the elderly, veterans and those with developmental disabilities. Deputies also visit hospitals and crisis units, rehabilitation and counseling centers and homeless shelters to understand the many aspects of mental challenges. BSO continues to partner with many non-profit mental health centers so that our deputies learn best practices. I also require all our school resource deputies to be CIT trained. This helps them to identify children that could be at risk for harming themselves or others and intervene before matters escalate. The training provides law enforcement with de-escalation techniques and solutions specific to assessing the underlying medical or emotional issues responsible for a person’s state of mind. These strategies allow law enforcement to recognize the difference between behavior that is criminal and behavior that is due to a person’s decreased capacity to cope with the ordinary demands of life. In the past, law enforcement’s response to incidents involving a mental crisis was to apprehend the person who was acting out, being disorderly or threatening to cause harm. CIT training provides a non-violent solution that involves assisting, not arresting, the person with mental health problems. My experience has shown that arresting a person with mental health issues does not address the problem; instead, it adds to the problems the individual is already facing. Mental illness isn’t a crime, and incarceration shouldn’t be the solution. To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter@browardsheriff.
