Here’s all you need to know to be successful with them: ▸ SOIL - If planting into the ground, you should blend at least a 50/50 mix of Miracle Gro Garden Soil with your existing soil. For container gardens, use Fafard Potting Soil. ▸ FOOD - Osmocote time release granules should be applied immediately upon planting and 2 months later. ▸ SUN - These annuals thrive in full sun but will still flower nicely in partial shade. Avoid deep shade. ▸ WATERING - Daily for ten days to get the roots established and then 2-3 times per week thereafter, depending on heat and wind. ▸ PRUNING - It’s advantageous to lightly prune some annuals during their 3rd month to maintain fullness and promote continued flowering. Marigolds should be dead headed. I encourage you to visit with Jodi, Annual Buyer and Very Friendly Associate at Flamingo Road Nursery, to learn more about these flowers. The nursery also hosts weekend seminars at 10 am every Saturday and Sunday on a wide variety of topics to assist you in becoming the best gardener on your block! community news Relay for Life Overnight Event to Help Fight Cancer By DEBBy TEICH

THIS yEAR 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE WILL HEAR THE DREADED WORDS, “you have cancer”. Lydia Kruger heard them ten years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent extensive treatment and survived. Her mother was not as lucky and lost her battle with breast cancer. This month, Kruger will join others, who have been touched by cancer, at the 11th Annual Davie-Cooper City Relay for Life 2010. The 18-hour, overnight event will take place on the athletic field at Western High School, 1200 SW 136th St. It begins at 3 p.m., on Sat., March 20, and ends at 9 a.m., on Sun. March 21. “Relay for Life gives me the chance to celebrate the fact that I am still alive and to raise money to find a cure,” said Kruger, chairperson. “I hope that one day cancer will be a thing of the past.” Relay for Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten; that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. More than 60 teams are expected to participate in Davie-Cooper City. There are teams of students, police officers, fire fighters, family members, friends, co-workers and more. Last year, they raised $100,000 and organizers are hoping to beat that this year. The Davie event begins with the Survivor’s Victory Lap. Cancer survivors and their caregivers walk around the quartermile track in a symbolic tribute to honor survivors and celebrate life. The emotional ceremony gives the adults, teenagers and children who walk together the comfort that they are not alone. Kruger has participated in the Victory Lap for the past ten years. The Luminaria Ceremony, also very moving, begins at approximately 9 p.m. Bags containing luminary candles, inscribed with the name of a victim or survivor, are placed around the track. Participants light candles, which burn throughout the event to constantly remind people why they are there. Luminaries can be purchased online or at the event. The festivities continue all night long, with at least one member of each team walking or running on the candlelit track at all times. The crowd enjoys non-stop entertainment, including local musicians, magicians, bands and much more. This year’s theme is “birthday parties.” Teams are encouraged to dress in costumes and decorate their tents appropriately. Many sell food,

1 March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

crafts, bracelets, books and beverages to raise additional funds. “Thanks to medical advances and improved treatments, more and more cancer patients are surviving to reach another birthday,” said Diane Sori, publicity chair, whose family and friends have been touched by cancer. “By raising thousands of dollars over the years, the Davie/Cooper City Relay for Life has helped to add another candle on someone’s cake.” Some people attend Relay for Life to walk a lap or two, while others stay all night. Some people just come for the Survivor’s Lap or the Luminaria Ceremony. Each has their own reason for being there. For many, it is a life-changing event. It offers the newly diagnosed a chance to meet someone who has survived the same type of cancer. It provides cancer patients in treatment with an opportunity to discuss their options with others. It brings the long-term survivor a community’s recognition of their struggle. It offers caregivers a place to meet others who understand the challenges and joys of caring for a loved one. For information on putting a team together; joining a team; walking as a survivor; becoming a corporate sponsor or volunteering during the event, visit www.relayforlife. org/daviecoopercityfl or send an email to Lydia Kruger at sru625@aol.com or Diane Sori at Gabootica@aol.com. For information on the American Cancer Society, visit www.cancer.org.

The 11th Annual Davie-Cooper City Relay for Life will take place at Western High School this year. The 18 hour event begins at 3 p.m., on Saturday, March 20, and ends at 9 a.m., on Sunday, March 21. Photos submitted.

community news Super Bowl Party Raises Thousands for Local Infant

By DEBBy TEICH

FOR TWO FAMILIES, THE SUPER BOWL WAS MUCH MORE THAN JUST a football game. It was a chance for friends to reach out to each other for the benefit of an innocent child. Joshua Pelling was born on January 22, 2008 with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, often called the “bubble boy disease.” It left him with a compromised immune system, making a simple infection, like a cold, potentially fatal. Joshua needed a bone marrow transplant and, fortunately, his mother was a match. After seven days of chemotherapy, the transplant was performed successfully. The chemotherapy, however, caused his liver to fail, leaving him close to death three times.

Loretta Weiner asked some of her friends to help cater a Super Bowl party to raise money for one-year-old Joshua Pelling. (l to r) Sherri Pfefer, Robyn Weiss, Loretta Weiner, Terri Gelband and Jody Steinlauf.

raffle ticket for their donations, with a chance to win commemorative footballs, T Shirts, hats and other Super Bowl paraphernalia. “I thought since we were already having a party, why not use this event to raise funds and score big for Joshua,” said Weiner. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and at the same time, watch an exciting football game taking place right here in our magical city.”

Loretta and Larry Weiner take a donation from a guest at their Super Bowl party. The party was also a fundraiser for one-year-old Joshua Pelling.

Joshua recently celebrated his first birthday and he is doing well. Although insurance has paid for a substantial part of the cost, there are still many expenses that are not covered. The family is struggling to pay their bills and turned to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association for help. COTA is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplantneedy patients. One hundred percent of all funds raised are used for the patients’ transplant-related expenses. A team of local volunteers, led by Loretta and Larry Weiner, have offered to help raise $50,000 for Joshua. The Pellings and the Weiners met seven years ago at Solera Community Church, where both families are very active. The Pellings run the church’s youth ministry and the Weiners have two sons who are involved with it. “The Pellings serve tirelessly for our youth,” said Loretta Weiner. “I am so pleased to have them teach and nurture my kids and I want to do everything I can to help them.” Weiner decided to turn her annual Super Bowl party into a fundraiser. For the past 10 years, her invited guests have brought a dish to share. This year, she catered the party, with help from her friends, husband and sons. Instead of bringing food, she asked all of the guests to donate $20 to COTA in honor of Joshua. Each received a

Joshua Pelling, born with a rare disease, received a bone marrow transplant when he was only six months old. His parents Scott and Leticia have partnered with COTA to help them raise money to cover their expenses.

Over 100 people attended the party to watch the game on the Weiner’s 109” screen, as well as several other televisions scattered throughout the Sunshine Ranch estate home. They raised a total of $4,000, including a generous donation of $1,000 from a neighbor. “We are honored and grateful that the Weiners did this for Joshua,” said Leticia Pelling. “We are truly blessed,” For more information or to make a donation, visit www.cotaforjoshuap.com

tax time Tax-aware investing for the 21st Century PROvIDED By,, THE URE-MARTINEz GROUP UBS FINANCIAL SERvICES INC.

This article has been written and provided by UBS Financial Services Inc. for use by its Financial Advisors. Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said that "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." For investors, it pays to be mindful that it is not only fees that reduce investment returns, but taxes have an impact as well. Money managers typically focus on pre-tax investment returns, leaving it to investors and their financial advisors to deal with the tax consequences. As a result, interest in tax-managed investments has grown considerably; the number of taxmanaged mutual funds increased from 18 in 1995 to over 200 a decade later (source: Lipper Investor Services). While many strategies and techniques are available for individuals to minimize the impact of taxes on an investment portfolio, let's explore some of the more popular ones. Tax-indifferent investing. In this approach, the potential impact of taxes on a portfolio is not part of the investment decision making process. The approach is most suitable for tax-deferred accounts like an IRA or a 401(k) plan. Tax-aware investing. This approach, which seeks to generate the most efficient after-tax gains, can be passive or active. Passive tax management uses tax-exempt or tax-advantaged investment instruments such as municipal bonds, certain structured products, or securities that have low current income/yield. Money managers may also rely on a buy-and-hold strategy, which can potentially minimize transaction-triggered tax events. Active tax management is the practice of selective tax-loss harvesting on top of the tax-managed instruments and strategies described above. Client-centric financial planning. Here, the financial advisor assists his or her client in deciding asset “location” as well as asset allocation. Asset location involves deciding what type of assets belong in taxable or tax-advantaged (e.g., IRA) accounts. As an example, a high-turnover equity strategy may be invested in an IRA while a municipal bond strategy is pursued in a taxable account.

Municipal bonds and municipal bond funds

Municipal bonds benefit from federal tax exemption. They also are exempt from state and local income tax for residents of the issuing state. However, both municipal bonds and municipal bond funds may be subject to the Federal Alternative Minimum Tax ("AMT"). If your client is or may be subject to the AMT, you should look for municipal bonds whose income is not taxable for AMT purposes or for a municipal bond fund that has a portfolio where a low percentage of bonds produce AMT income. For investors holding municipal bonds issued outside of their state of residence, those bonds may produce interest that is taxable at the state and local levels. Statespecific bond funds generally limit their investments to the bonds issued within a single state, which address investor concerns over subjecting such income to state and local taxation.

Tax-Managed Equity Funds

Tax-managed mutual funds consider taxes on capital gains and dividends as part of their investment strategy. They will pursue one or more strategies in an attempt to mitigate the effect of taxes, including deferring the realization of capital gains or engaging in loss harvesting to offset capital gains. A concentrated low-turnover strategy is also regarded as potentially having tax benefits.

Exchange-Traded Funds

Since their introduction in the 1990s, Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have proven to be relatively tax-efficient due to the way ETFs are structured. For most investors, ETFs are bought and sold on the secondary market. Because ETFs can often raise

18 March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

funds for redemptions in a manner that is not taxable to investors, they tend to incur fewer taxable transactions in the normal course of operations than a similar nonexchange-traded-fund might. Investors will, of course, be subject to taxes on the realized gain arising from the sale of the ETF. Fund selection, portfolio construction and tactical asset allocation are key components of a total approach to tax-aware investing.

Fund Selection

Research should explore the effectiveness of funds and ETFs both as tax-efficient investment vehicles as well as their long-term performance track records and risk characteristics.

Portfolio Construction

Municipal bond funds can be a good foundation for the fixed income portion of any tax-aware investment portfolio. Presently there are few ETFs in this space, so actively managed mutual funds may be the best vehicle for a diversified, tax-efficient fixed income portion of the portfolio. For equities, a core-satellite portfolio structure can help address the tax sensitivities. For example, ETFs as the U.S. large-cap allocation can constitute the tax-efficient core, supplemented by actively-managed funds in the small/mid-cap and international equity asset classes. For alternative investments, market-neutral or long-short strategies as well as a core investment in the commodity markets may complement other components of a tax-aware portfolio.

Conclusion

Investors may not need to consider the impact of taxes on every investment decision they make. Indeed, investors should make sure that the tax "tail' does not wag the investment "dog." Nevertheless, an informed philosophy regarding tax-aware investing can give investors a starting point for deciding which instruments and strategies they should consider with the help of their financial advisor when investing with a view toward tax efficiency. fitness forum Exercise Myths and Flexibility Tips By ELLEN LATHAM, MS

IT GETS VERy CONFUSING FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE IN REGARD TO exercise and not always getting the best advice. Hopefully I can help clear a few things up.

Top Four Exercise Myths

1. you will burn more fat if you exercise longer at a lower intensity. Wrong! you burn fat by creating a big total energy cost, that is why the Ultimate Workout at our studio was selected as the best weightloss exercise class in the country. The faster you walk, spin or run the more calories you burn per minute. you will need to work your way up in regard to intensity, so in the beginning you will need more rest periods in between your intervals of harder work. 2. yoga is a completely gentle and safe exercise. Wrong! yoga is a great form of exercise, but some styles are rigorous and demanding both physically and mentally. We made the decision at our studio to offer only yoga-stretch so we would not run into that problem. 3. Exercise will allow you to lose “all” the weight you desire. Wrong! As with all responses to exercise, weight gain or loss is impacted by many factors, including your diet and your genetics. All people will not lose the same amount of weight with the same exercise program, although exercise is the number ONE factor for successful weightloss. Just look at the BIGGEST LOSER. 4. If you want to lose weight, only do cardio. Wrong! you must do BOTH cardio and weightraining for the best results. Strength training, like what is done in our Ultimate Workout Class, will help maintain muslce mass and decrease body fat percentage.

Top Four Flexibility Tips

Our muscles function is to create tension and produce force so movement occurs.

March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

The intrinsic capacity of muscle is to go through a full range of motion...which is called flexibility. Here are some answers to questions I get in my studio about flexibility. 1. How many days a week should I be stretching? Each person differs but I suggest clients take a yoga-stretch type class and pilates, which emphasizes stretch and strength at least 2 - 3 times a week. Ideallly 5 - 6 times a week of this training would assure a more flexible body. 2. How long should you hold a stretch to improve flexibility? A 15-30 second hold will improve results. 3. What is the best flexibility method? There are several methods that work but I have found (PNF) Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is superior to any other stretching. This is taught to our clients, so they can do this on their own. It has HUGE functional benefits. you put resistance in the muscle you want to stretch prior to stretching it. 4. What is that “STRETCH REFLEX” you talk about in your classes? When you stretch a muscle, there are muscle spindles that are along side that stretched muscle. It records the length of the stretch of that muscle and sends a message to your spinal cord which triggers the “STRETCH REFLEX”. This reflex actually opposes the stretch to protect the muscle from injury. That is why we hold a stretch for 15 - 30 seconds to allow this reflex to release. you can exercise every day, but if you do not have the correct information you are literally wasting your time. health & wellness If It Ain’t Broke…Make Certain! By DR. BROWNER & DR. BEHAR

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” We are all familiar with this statement. Perhaps you have even used it a few times yourself! However, these can be dangerous words if referring to ones health. People who believe this about their health may be heading down a slippery slope to serious health problems. The “if it ain’t broke...” belief is founded on the notion that since pain usually means there is a problem, no pain must mean there’s no problem. Those that hold this view make decisions about their health based entirely on how they feel. Tragically, health care is littered with catastrophic examples demonstrating the naiveté of this belief. Heart disease and cancer are two extreme examples on a long list of conditions that can develop silently, with no symptoms. Back pain is one such condition. Remember the time you bent over and suddenly couldn’t move because of pain? That back problem didn’t just happen. Ninety percent of back and neck pain is a direct result of failure in management of spinal health. In other words, spinal pain is not the start of a problem, it is the end result. A spine can be dysfunctional (not working correctly) for months or years before any pain is felt, thanks to the body’s many compensating mechanisms. However, when the body runs out of ways to compensate, or the compensating mechanisms finally give up, the white flag goes up in the form of pain signals. Science is now telling us there is more to silent spinal dysfunction problems than even most health practitioners are aware. Spinal dysfunction is usually the result of postural distortion (imbalance), and abnormal spinal alignment and curvature. Those structural problems, together with the abnormal function they produce, have

been shown to cause premature deterioration of the spine, as well as adverse effects on the nervous system. Indeed, the long-term health consequences of structural and functional problems of the spine can be profound, yet often unnecessary. Do not let pain be your guide. Instead, be proactive with regards to your spinal health. Book a chiropractic spinal check-up today! An ounce of prevention… For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center, Weston 954-2174881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation, contact our Weston location for more information.

skin secrets Collagen Regeneration, the Absolute Secret to Younger Skin BY ERIN OwOC, DERMATOLOgY NuRSE PRACTITIONER – AgELESS SkIN MEDICAL SPA

I HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILy MEMBERS ASK ME, REALLy WHAT HAVE you seen in your 8 years of cosmetic aesthetic experience that will help my skin look like when I was in my 20’s. The answer is using products and procedures that help trigger the regeneration of your skins collagen. The faster you can get your skin to regenerate its collagen the younger your skin will look. There are 4 ways to speed up your skins collagen rebuilding process: 1. Physical Exfoliation. This is probably the most basic form of collagen regeneration. Receiving a physical exfoliation treatment such as microdermabrasion or using a hand held home exfoliation device such as the new Clarisonic Pro encourages healthy cell turnover. 2. Chemical Exfoliation. Salicylic, lactic, glycolic, and retinoic acid are just some of the acids that are used in chemical peels to exfoliate the skin. They can vary in strength to produce mild peeling or deeper peeling. These acids in milder percentages are also available in at-home products (via prescription medical grade cosmeceuticals) to cleanse and treat your skin on a daily basis. Chemical exfoliation can be a more aggressive, but effective way to regenerate your skin. 3. Physical & Chemical Exfoliation Combined. Recent advancements in technology have made it possible to both physically exfoliate and chemically exfoliate simultaneously with the procedure HydraDermabrasion. This innovative

treatment offers both processes in just 30 minutes. HydraDermabasion is so effective because after the outer layer of your skin is compromised, then the chemical peel is infused thus the acids can penetrate deeper. HydraDermabrasion is the most cost effective pain free way to accomplish both exfoliation methods and deliver incredible results. 4. FRAXEL. The most effective way I have seen to trigger the regeneration of collagen by using FRAXEL laser resurfacing. The FRAXEL laser delivers microscopic columns deep into your dermis to create tiny wounds. This process expedites your body’s remodeling of collagen and elastin, which results in tighter, fresher, more youthful-looking skin. The results are stunning. Many places claim to do FRAXEL resurfacing but they actually use an inferior laser or light device. Make sure that it is in fact FRAXEL to ensure you are getting the best possible treatment.

health & wellness Live Life to the Fullest! Find Out How to Regain Your Youthful Vitality By DR. JEAN CLAUDE NERETTE

yOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SyMPTOMS ANyMORE! ARE yOU tired all the time, do you lack sexual desire, depressed, can’t focus, experience hot flashes or gained weight? All of these symptoms listed can be caused by a hormonal imbalance, by simply replacing what hormones your body is deficient in can correct these symptoms. Unfortunately, in 1991 shock waves were sent through our society when the Women’s Health Care Initiative Study was halted prematurely due a slight increase in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease with women taking oral conjugated estrogen, estrogen derived from pregnant horse urine, such as Premarin. The conclusion reached by society was that all hormones caused the same problem. This simply is not true. Bio-identical hormones are not the same, they are identical to that which the body produces, and does not cause any of the problems that estrogen derived from horse urine may cause. In addition, there has been an abundant amount of research papers published in respected international journals documenting the beneficial effects of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy since the 1930’s. Due to the fact that pharmaceutical companies are unable to manufacture and sell these naturally occurring hormones, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been ignored because of the political agenda’s of pharmaceutical companies in the United States. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can be delivered in many ways via pills, patches, creams, injections and pellets. The most physiologic way of administration is via pellet therapy because the hormone levels are maintained constantly without the peaks and troughs seen with the other methods. Pellet therapy is delivered by placing the hormones directly under the skin allowing the body to access the hormones constantly whenever the body is in need. This convenient method allows delivery of hormones for 3-6 months, without having to remember to take a daily pills or possibly having skin irritation from creams and patches. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy can help both men and women achieve the natural healthy balance of hormones their bodies need to maintain optimum well-being.

Some of the benefits of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy include: Enhancement of libido and/ or increased sexual desire; Reduced fatigue & increased energy levels; Relief from anxiety and depression; Consistency in moods- reduction in feelings of anger, nervousness and irritability; Increased energy, focus, mental clarity and concentration; Improved memory; An increase in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat In addition to these symptoms of overall well-being, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy has been shown to decrease cholesterol, increase bone density and possibly offer increased protection against breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy is initiated only after a complete medical history and specific laboratory testing to evaluate deficiencies in hormones such as the, thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone to name a few. Depending on the results of the laboratory testing, medical history and symptoms, the appropriate hormone and delivery method is chosen. After 2 weeks most clients are stating, “I feel wonderful” or “My husband thanks you for bringing me back to him.” you simply don’t have to live with the symptoms anymore! Dr. Jean Claude Nerette is certified in SottoPelle Bio-Identical Hormone Treatment. Dr. Nerette performs all treatments at his Medical Spa - Bellissimo Medical Spa & Salon. health & wellness Sciatica

By ANTHONy M. CROTHERS, D.C., CHIROPRACTIC PHySICIAN

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back all the way into the foot. Sciatica occurs when this nerve is irritated. Numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the lower back and legs are common sciatic symptoms. Sciatica may be a result of disk damage in the spine, or tense muscles in the buttocks. Causes of these problems include prolonged sitting, poor posture when lifting, and injury. Chiropractic care can help reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can ease pain and improve movements without taking medication. On initial consultation you will be asked about your symptoms, past injuries or treatments, and overall health. you will also be asked about your daily life which includes habits, hobbies, and exercise. The chiropractor will take xrays which will help show the condition of your spine. your our chiropractor creates a treatment plan to care for your sciatica. This likely includes a hands-on technique called manipulation. Other treatment methods also help. you ou are taught ways to relieve your pain and keep it from coming back. Manipulations (also called adjustments) helps improve alignment and flexibility in the spine and joints. During manipulations, your chiropractor carefully applies pressure to affected areas. Sciatica may be treated with manipulation of the lower back. This helps reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Other treatments may be suggested. These can help reduce pain by relaxing muscles and reduce swelling. They include: ▸ Trigger point therapy to ease muscle tension ▸ Massage, ultrasound, and muscle stimulation to relax muscles, reduce muscle spasm, and improve blood flow. ▸ Traction to realign the spine and reduce pressure on nerves. ▸ Ice to reduce swelling and heat to relax muscles. Chiropractic is a method of healthcare that helps ease pain and restore movement. Hands-on techniques are used, not drugs or surgery. A main goal of chiropractic is to keep the body’s nerves, bones, and muscles working well together. To do this, care is focused on the spine and joints. health & wellness Teeth whitening 101 – Don’t be left with Disappointment and an Empty wallet By DR. TORy R. LINDH, DMD, PA

“Do you want whiter teeth?” It’s safe to say that the simple answer is “yes”! A bright smile can bring more confidence and a great first impression. So how can one achieve a whiter smile? The important factor to understand is that not everyone can achieve the same results with whitening products and procedures. What has worked for your family member or friend may not have worked for you and it can be frustrating! Dental Whitening has been proven to be safe, easy, and relatively painless. With so many products available over the counter, it is tempting to try them without knowledge of our own oral health. Though some people may see minor results, others may be left with disappointment and an empty wallet. There are three main categories of whitening systems- in office whitening, at home whitening and whitening toothpaste. Whitening toothpastes use mild abrasives to mechanically remove any plaque and stain from the surface of your teeth. This can help create the appearance of white teeth by keeping them clean. Whitening toothpaste can be found at your local grocery store or drug store for about $3-$6. At home whitening methods are available in mouthwashes, strips, and trays and can be a convenient and low cost way to whiten on your own schedule. A peroxide based gel is the active whitening ingredient in these products and will be in the form either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. What is the difference between the two? Hydrogen peroxide dissolves (oxidizes) quicker therefore is good to use in short time frames of whitening. Carbamide peroxide is better to use in trays for a few hours at a time and even overnight because the peroxide breaks down slower and whitening effects last longer. These peroxides will be available in different strength percentages from 5%-35%. Whitening products that are available over the counter will have a much lower percentage of peroxide therefore take longer to work. Whitening Mouthwashes contain all of the same ingredients as the regular rinses with the exception of adding in hydrogen peroxide. Rinse with these mouthwashes has been proven to have a whitening effect if you use it twice a day for 30 seconds. However, the manufacturer says it may take up to twelve weeks to see any results. Mouthwashes are available over the counter for less than $10. whitening Strips are thin, clear strips that contain hydrogen peroxide gel. The strips are available through many different manufactures and usage instructions may vary. Typically, you would apply the strips directly on your teeth twice daily for

3 March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

about half hour to one hour per application. Whitening effects can be seen within the first few days of using them and may take two or three weeks to achieve maximum results. The strips are available at your local drug store. The price range for whitening strips can range from $10-$60 on average for a two week supply. Whitening Trays resemble a mouth guard and can be standard (one size fits all) or custom fitted. A peroxide-based whitening gel, usually carbamide peroxide is placed in the trays and then inserted into the mouth. One size fits all trays tend to be a bit bulky and because everyone’s mouths are shaped differently, may not allow the gel proper access to all tooth surfaces. Custom fitting trays are available at your dental office. Custom trays are made by taking a mold of your mouth called an impression. This allows the dental lab to fabricate an exact mold of your mouth. your dentist will make sure the trays fit properly and then dispense syringes with the appropriate prescription strength of whitening gel. If the trays are properly cared for, you can expect to use them for many years. The peroxide based gel available at the store is usually around 5% carbamide peroxide while the gel provided to you by the dentist can be upwards of 35%. Trays should be worn for about 1-2 hours a day. Time can be split into two short sessions or one long session. Duration of treatment may take up to two weeks, however, time may be shorter or longer depending on the person and strength of gel. One size fits all trays range from $20-$60 while custom fabricated trays can cost anywhere from $200-$400. In-Office whitening is the quickest way to whiten your teeth. It has been termed one-hour whitening, however, the whole process from start to finish may take about two hours. By the end of the treatment, your teeth can be up to 10 shades lighter. Results can vary depending on the individual patient. In-office whitening can range anywhere from $400-$1000.

Once you get your teeth to a shade you are happy with, it is important to maintain. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dental office can assure your teeth are being taken care of. Whitening results can last for up to a year, if not longer. Smoking, drinking, and eating habits can affect the length of time your teeth stay white. Whitening trays are the best way to touch up about once or twice a year. Dr. Tory Lindh offers a complimentary whitening exam and consultation to help you choose the system that’s right for you. His practice is located at 7500 NW 5th Street, Suite 103 in Plantation, telephone 954-581-0100. Visit his website at www. drlindh.com

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month: Act Now to Prevent Colon Cancer STEVEN D. wExNER. MD - FACS, FRCS, FRCS(ED) – CLEvELAND CLINIC COLORECTAL SURGEON

Preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure prevents colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective. ▸ Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. ▸ Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to as many as 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up. ▸ Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a screening colonoscopy at age 50. Anyone at increased risk should be screened by age 40 – earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care. For a consultation, please call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit our website at www.clevelandclinicflorida.org

A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?

Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic itself. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Every life deserves world class care.

community news Stand up and Be Counted

DAVIE MAyOR JUDy PAUL JOINED TOWN EMPLOyEES LAST WEEK IN a county wide initiative to bring awareness to the upcoming 2010 United States Census. The Broward County League of Cities 2010 Preparation Committee asked that all Broward County cities show a united front and raise awareness for a complete count for the 2010 Census by wearing a red top on February 2. The Census is a count of everyone residing in the United States. All U.S. residents must be counted – both citizens and noncitizens. The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. Households will receive the questionnaire in the mail or by hand delivery in March 2010 and are asked to complete and mail back the questionnaire upon receipt. Just Ten Minutes Every Ten years Census Day is April 1, 2010. This means that census questionnaires should be mailed back on or before April 1, 2010. If you do not mail your census questionnaire back on or before April 1, a Census worker may visit your home to follow up. The questionnaire is simple and takes only 10 minutes to complete. It asks for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, and whether you own or rent your home.

It’s Safe to Complete the Census It’s illegal for the Census Bureau to share your personal information with any government agency – not even law enforcement, IRS, Welfare, FBI or immigration. No court of law, not even the President of the United States can access your responses. Census workers are subject to a $250,000 fine and/or a five-year prison term for disclosing census information. Community Funding Depends on you The local community receives funding for education, public safety, housing and community development, transportation, health care, and human services programs based on Census results. Community organizations use results to determine location of factories, shopping centers, movie theaters, banks and offices – activities that lead to new jobs. Population Determines Representation Census data is used to determine local representation in the legislatures. Undercounting results is under-representation for our community. For more information, visit the web at www.broward.org/census, or contact Phillip Holste at the Town of Davie at 954-797-1041.

legally sPeaking Criminal Convictions and their Possible Effect on Immigration Proceedings By EvAN BARON, PA

OFTEN TIMES AN INDIVIDUAL charged with a criminal offense must make a decision as to how he/she will dispose of the charge(s). Most criminal cases are resolved by way of a plea agreement with the state attorney or the United States Attorney if in Federal Court. Individuals often accept plea offers because of a perceived benefit. This benefit can be avoiding incarceration or remaining conviction free. Often in the Sate of Florida first time offenders who are not charged with very serious crimes will be offered a plea involving perhaps a period of probation and a “withholding of adjudication of guilt”. This withholding of guilt results in the individual not having a conviction on his/her record. If that person were to be asked if he/she has ever been convicted of a crime, the answer would be no. If the individual successfully completes probation he/she could get his/her record sealed, if this is in fact a first offense. Unfortunately, non citizens or aliens do not always consider the long term effect of such a plea. This plea agreement which withheld adjudication of guilt and allowed the person to be conviction free could still have a negative effect on his/her immigration status. In entering a plea, a Judge must under Florida state law advise an individual that a plea entered in this cause could lead to possible deportation. If this warning is not given than a motion can be filed to attempt to set aside the plea so as to avoid any possible immigration consequences. The individual must allege that if such a warning was in fact given, he/she would not have entered a plea. The term conviction in respect to an alien has been defined in the United States

Code as a formal judgment of guilt entered by a court or if an adjudication of guilt has been withheld, where:

▸ A judge or jury has found the alien guilty or the alien has entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendre (no contest) or has admitted sufficient facts to warrant a finding of guilt, and ▸ The judge has ordered some form of punishment, penalty, or restraint on the alien’s liberty to be imposed. First time drug offenders are now eligible to attend drug court in state court which would result in the charge being dismissed after the individual successfully completes a structured drug program. This does not require an admission of guilt or even a plea of no contest. There is a similar program in the Federal Court titled the Federal First Offender Act. The concern for aliens is not only possible deportation but how might the resolution of the criminal case effect their application for citizenship. I strongly encourage any alien who is charged with any criminal offense, no matter how minor it may seem, to consult with an Immigration attorney before resolving their case. If you need any further advice or information please feel free to contact my office at 954 385-09160 or check my website at www. evanbaron.com

lawn & garden New Bugs In Town By JOANNE BARBER

Over the past 10 years the changes in the environment have brought many changes to the insect world. Insect Immigration is alive an well in Florida. After 28 years in pest control it is still amazing how insects learn to adapt and evolve, to survive weather, predators and chemicals. The first time we came across a White- footed black ant, we assumed it was just an ordinary black side walk ant in huge numbers. It was properly identified in 2007, by entomologist at the University of Florida. We doused them with every chemical we had in the arsenal and with 1 week it was as if we had not treated the property at all. Making a proper identification of an insect is vital in our business. We soon learned this was no ordinary black ant. Under a microscope we could see it’s thread like white feet (tarsi), it could walk over the chemical without picking up residual. It could reproduce, by swarming and almost 50% of the populations were believed to be female. They have a symbiotic relationship with ornamental insects. They will protect Scale, Mealy bugs, and Aphids the very insects that eat your plants. These insects produce honeydew in their excrement and white footed black ants love sweets. New professional use chemicals had to be produced. We are finally getting a handle on this pest. Anyone living in Florida knows and either loves or hates the Ficus tree or hedge. Although wonderful privacy fences their root system can be invasive. Landscapers and pest control companies could not kill or get rid of this plant easily. The Fig

March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

White fly almost wiped them out in one year. We at first thought it was drought, then thrips, which never killed them before, but was opportunistic insect, after the ficus weakened. Fig White Fly was finally identified in South Miami and our fellow pest control operators, helped warn us right at the start of the infestation. The hard part explaining to our many customers why the ficus, which seemed so impervious for years, looked like it was lit on fire. Although we had the chemicals that trans-located through the plant, we did not know for sure how long each treatment would last. Most of our customers wanted to save their ficus hedge. We have been able to keep them healthy. Last but not lease our newest ornamental insect Soft Exotic Crouton Scale. Although discovered on crouton first in Monroe County. This scale does not discriminate and uses as its host more than just croutons. It is happy to reproduce on gumbo limbo trees, ficus and many other ornamentals. The male scale settles on the underside of the leaf and looks like a little brown bumps and the females almost look yellow and are larger. We have chemicals that can save your plants, but the home owner can make mechanical changes that may prevent the infestation of insects. Placement of you plants in your yard can stop much of the damage of a weakened plant: Too much water. Too much shade. Too much cutting and trimming. Sometimes too much care. the real deal on real estate The “waiting game” May Be Too Expensive By zONA HORTON

Mr. Buyer has been eyeing a lovely two-story, four-bedroom, three-bath, two-cargarage pool home (that is not a short sale or foreclosure debacle) listed for $309,000. If the Sellers were to accept his $300,000 offer, Mr. Buyer’s monthly note (PITI) would be approximately $1630 a month at the 5% interest rate. Intent on playing the “the waiting game” and thinking he can “time the market,” Mr. Buyer waits and waits for his dream home’s price to hit rock bottom – whatever “rock bottom” is. In the meantime, as our economy stabilizes, interest rates are on the rise. According to Marc Roth of BusinessWeek (December 8, 2009), “Interest rates are at historic lows, but cyclical trends suggest they will soon rise. Home buyers may never see such a chance again.” Even though interest rates have hovered around 5%, it is probably within the foreseeable future that rates may rise to 6% or perhaps 7% by the end of 2010. Mr. Buyer ponders. Mr. Buyer continues to wonder and wait – as his kids watch at all their would-be parties whoosh down their would-be pool’s drain. A few weeks go by. Mr. Buyer fervently peruses the internet. He frantically calls his agent who tells him his “dream pool home” is now a pended sale, or worse, the price has increased another $10,000 (which happens in some markets). Or maybe, just maybe, the home price drops to $285,000 (about 5%). Mr. Buyer checks with his bank, and to his horror, he is told his interest rate is now 6%. That $285,000 pool home will cost him $1,690 a month (PITI) instead of $1,630 a month (PITI) when the home price would have been $300,000 and his interest could have been 5%.. Waiting for one more month, or perhaps the next six months, Mr. Buyer hopes the

March 010 · www.davietowntimes.com

interest rate will decrease. He is feeling lucky because his dream pool home price did drop to $270,000 (about 10%). He is ready to make his move, until the bank informs him that interest rate is now around 7%. Oh, well, at least the home is priced down $30,000 from when he started – but wait – he is informed that the $270,000 home will now cost him $1,750 a month (PITI)! Interest rates play a major role in buying a home! As interest rates increase and inventories decrease, Mr. Buyer’s choices dwindle. Waiting for home prices to drop may not always be the best economical or the most advantageous plan. Research. Analyze. Commit. Move! Can Do Kids Continued from Page 55 a parent, aunt, uncle or someone else indirectly affected by Make-A-Wish. It is rarely a child since the large crowd can be intimidating. “Marina is so well-spoken and personable that we wanted to give her a chance to speak,” said Richard Kelly, VP and COO of the Make a Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. “There is no better person to tell our story than someone who has had their wish granted. The audience was completely engaged and silent when she spoke.” Gov. Crist attended the event and heard her speak. He was so impressed with her efforts that he chose her as a recipient of the Point of Light Award. Last month, Marina joined hundreds of participants in the Walk for Wishes 5K walk/run. She wore a t shirt identifying her as a “wish kid” and had another opportunity to share her story and make a difference. “I was honored to walk with the people that gave their time, effort and money to help change my life,” said Marina. “I will do whatever I can to help other sick kids get their wishes granted and to give them hope. All of these kids have been through so much.” Over the past 29 years, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and its network of nearly 25,000 volunteers, has granted the wishes of more than 174,000 children worldwide. Nearly 500 of those wishes were granted in South Florida last year. The hope is that the “wish come true” will provide a special kind of magic that will help sustain these children through extremely difficult times, until a miracle can be achieved. Children wish for a variety of things. They want to travel to Disney World or to see snow. They want meet their favorite celebrity. They want to be a firefighter or baseball player for a day. Some just want something simple like a puppy. Last year, Make-a-Wish granted wishes to meet three of the most powerful people in the world – President Obama, Bill Gates and the Pope. It costs the Foundation an average of $5,000 to grant each wish.

cover story The Center for Medical weight Loss Can Help You keep Your New Year’s Resolution By STACEy BOMSER

THE MOST POPULAR NEW yEAR RESOLUTIONS are to lose weight, get fit and eat right. you can accomplish all of these at the Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) at University Drive. It provides patients with a clinical approach to shedding pounds and keeping them off utilizing doctor-managed weight loss programs tailored to their individual goals. “Treating people with weight problems isn’t as simple as telling them to eat less,” explains Gabriela Rosenthal, a weight loss specialist with the CMWL at University Drive. “I know as I’ve personally lost more than 120 pounds on this program. Obesity is a disease that needs to be treated by doctors via a customized weight loss program addressing the underlying cause of obesity – food addiction.” Unlike other weight loss programs that focus solely on weight loss through calorie restriction, the CMWL treats the whole patient – mind and body. Every patient receives individualized treatment with one-on-one care that includes nutrition, fitness, motivation and counseling. Using a combination of nutritionally-balanced meal replacements, and, in some cases, prescription appetite suppressants, along with counseling in behavior modification and lifestyle changes, the Center helps ensure long-term weight loss results. Rosenthal is living proof that the program works. She has maintained her weight loss for over one year with the CMWL , after gaining and losing over 500

pounds throughout her lifetime. “Our patients have 99% retention of weight loss1 at one year out,” she states. Maintaining your goal weight is easy, if you lose weight the right way. “On most weight loss plans you are actually dehydrating yourself and losing muscle,” explains Rosenthal. “Sure you lose weight initially, but as soon as you go off the diet the weight comes right back. you need to lose weight the right way in order to get long-term results.” With the CMWL program, patients lose weight

while getting healthier. On this plan, patients maintain increase muscle mass with weight loss as a result of a strict diet consisting of low-calorie shakes and nutrition bars and exercise regimen. The average weight loss is 21 pounds in just four weeks2. All patients begin with blood work and a body composition analysis. This propriety equipment provides the CMWL with a full body-mass analysis which is used to determine the patient’s resting metabolic rate and daily caloric count needed to drop body fat to the lowest possible percentage while maintaining muscle mass. Dr. Elisabeth Cohn-Gelwasser, a board certified doctor in internal medicine and member of the American Bariatric Society of Physicians, then prescribes a weight loss program tailored specifically to each patient’s body. The doctor, along with a professional weight loss counselor, follows each patient’s progress. All programs focus on both the physical and behavioral aspects of weight loss. “We use a series of learning modules to educate our patients,” explains Rosenthal. “By teaching people what they have been doing wrong, we are able to educate them on how to lose weight and live a healthier life.” Patients are also encouraged to take advantage of the Center’s on-site, state-of-the-art fitness center. The resident certified fitness trainer, Maritza Henderson, designs her workout programs to uniquely fit her clients’ needs and focuses on circuit training for best results. The Center also has certified trainers on staff to teach Pilates, yoga, weight training and core strengthening. The CMWL at University Drive also promotes the use of Kangoo Jumps, a new low-impact rebound sports shoe that retails at the Center. They look and fit like comfortable ski boots with a giant spring on the bottom for jogging, running and jumping with 80% less impact on the joints and knees. “Jumping provides all the benefits of rebound exercise, which NASA calls the most effective and efficient form of exercise yet devised,” states Rosenthal, who uses these shoes as part of her workout routine. “Kangoo Jumps are great for heavier patients because they help prevent injuries and allow them to workout without putting unnecessary stress on their joints and muscles.” Another new product offered by the CWML is Doctor’s Orders, a meal delivery program. Freshly cooked, nutritionally balanced meals can be conveniently delivered to your home or office. “Because these meals are all calorie and portion controlled, they are ideal for patients in the maintenance phase,” notes Rosenthal. As a former dieter, she knows firsthand how difficult it is to maintain weight loss after ending the diet plan. “I know what it’s like to lose weight, but not be able to keep it off,” shares Rosenthal. “That will

not happen here. Our patients come in once a month for a consultation and body composition analysis. We can tweak the maintenance plan if need be. I want my patients to be successful just like me!” The Center for Medical Weight Loss at University Drive provides a clinical approach to shedding pounds with individualized, doctor-managed weight loss programs. The Center is located at 2209 N. University Drive in Pembroke Pines. For more information, visit www.cmwl.org. Patients must have remained on the program for a minimum of 28 days and be monitored with at least two physician visits within first 31 days to be included in the study. A variety of nutritional meal replacements were used. 99% of the patients that followed the CMWL program, including a low calorie diet and individual counseling with CMWL physicians, from one month up to a year, weighed less at their last weigh-in than their starting weight. 2 satisfied sample of 94 men over a six year period.

dining out Every Meal is Memorable at Vienna Café and wine Bar By STACEy BOMSER

Tired of the same old thing? Visit Vienna Café and Wine Bar. It’s anything but ordinary. From its quaint cottage setting to the artistically prepared culinary creations, every meal is memorable. Vienna Café and Wine Bar specializes in classical Northern European cuisine, a nod to owner Per Jacobsen’s native land. He hails from Denmark. “Danish food is rooted in German and Austrian foods. They are similar in profile and ingredients,” he explains, noting that this type of cuisine focuses on fresh ingredients, using a lot of veal and seafood. Jacobsen, a classically-trained chef who has worked at some of the finest hotels, resorts and cruises in the world, opened the restaurant eleven years ago. For years, he ran the kitchen, while his wife, Linda, and daughter, Jody, took care of the service side. Today, he serves more as the maitre d’, greeting guests and arranging private parties, and has turned over his apron to Chef Courtney Burks. Even with the addition, the restaurant remains a real family business. “Chef Courtney’s wife, Esperanza, is our pastry chef. They actually met here at the restaurant,” says Jacobsen. Always a chef at heart, Jacobsen works closely with Chef Courtney to create the menu. “We change it twice a year to keep it fresh,” he notes. “Plus we offer daily lunch and dinner specials. There are always two local seafoods featured plus a meat special every day.” Of course, Vienna Café and Wine Bar will always stay true to its roots. “We have several items that have been on the menu since the day we opened,” boasts Jacobsen. Guests will always find Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional veal dish with pan roasted potatoes, red cabbage, vegetables and pickled cucumber. The Frikadeller (Danish Meat Balls) is another classic. The pork, veal and beef meat balls are served with red cabbage, pan roasted potatoes and vegetables in a demi-glace sauce with pickled cucumber. The Roasted Duck features a crisp half duck, served with red cabbage, candied potatoes and bing cherry sauce. And the Twin Potato Crusted Fillet of Salmon is served in a pinot noir sauce with asparagus and carrots. Another specialty is Vienna Café’s signature salad, the Sonoma Salad. “We created this after tasting a similar salad during a visit to Sonoma, California,” explains Jacobsen. “We loved it so much, that we decided to turn it into our own.” He changed it a bit to include some of his favorite things. It features mescaline greens, raisins and walnuts tossed in balsamic vinaigrette and topped with gorgonzola cheese and diced apples. Guests can add grilled chicken to make it a meal. In fact, everything at Vienna Café and

Wine Bar is prepared to order. Guests can order their meal without salt, butter, or oil. The restaurant can also accommodate those diners on a gluten-free diet. “Because we cook all food to order, it is easy to adapt our food to what people want or need,” says Jacobsen, noting that the chef will take requests. “Just yesterday, I had a customer call in advance and ask for our cream of mushroom soup. We were able to prepare it and he took home two quarts.” The restaurant offers two home-made soups each day, one cream-based and the other non-cream. They are available for the weekday lunch special, half a sandwich with a cup of soup for $8.50. Diners enjoying the Sunset Stimulus Dinner may also select one of Vienna Café’s delicious soups. That three-course special includes either soup or salad, choice of three entrees, plus dessert for $25.00. It is offered daily from 4:30 to 6:00pm. On Mondays and Tuesdays the restaurant offers half-priced wine bottles. The name is Vienna Café and Wine Bar, after all. It features 160 wines, with 20 different wines available by the glass. “We offer wine tasting dinners, plus our servers are always happy to recommend a wine to accompany your dinner choice,” states Jacobsen. The restaurant was recently remodeled to offer a private dining room, which seats up to 30 people. It is available for bridal or baby showers, engagement celebrations, and other special events. Guests can create a custom menu or enjoy the regular restaurant menu.

Vienna Café and Wine Bar is located at 9100 State Road 84 in the Pine Island Plaza, between Nob Hill Road and Pine Island Road. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:30am until 9:00pm, Friday from 11:30am until 10:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am until 10:00pm, and Sunday from 9:00am until 9:00pm. Reservations are recommended; call 954-423-1961 or visit www.viennacafeandwinebar.com. A copy of the menu is available online.
