publisher’s page The Season of Giving!
M
ost of us had the fortune to spend a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday surrounded by family members and friends, enjoyed a fantastic feast followed by a splendid day of shopping for ‘Black Friday’ deals. Now that we have barely digested the Thanksgiving meal and are back to our ‘normal’ daily routine, we can reflect on all the little blessings we enjoy every day. And then we take a giant step into the next Holiday Season. We start to decorate our homes and businesses and slowly drift into the holiday spirit. As we approach the coming holidays we should reflect on this Season of Giving. While all of us are looking forward to see the gleaming eyes on our children’s faces as they open their presents on Christmas morning, we should remember that not all of us are so fortunate. Near and far are families that need our help and assistance. So please remember that the Season of Giving is not limited to giving gifts to our loved ones, but also includes your support of the needy near and far. Please give generously! community news Snow Forecasted for Davie
Teen Shares His Love of Cartooning
By Debby Teich
By Debby Teich
or 22 years, Davie residents have gathered to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season during the Winter Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play. More than 4,000 people are expected to attend the Dec. 5 event, which showcases Davie’s unique equestrian and agricultural community. The event kicks off with the Winter Holiday Tree, Menorah & Kinara Decorating Contest. On Dec. 1, school and civic groups will start decorating the menorahs, kinaras and 6 ft. white pine trees that line the entrance to the Davie Town Hall. This year’s theme is “A Global Celebration.” The groups make all of their own decorations and the Town provides the lights. All of the trees are donated by community sponsors. The festivities continue on Dec. 5th, when Davie residents are invited to visit the display of lights, as well as more than 50 beautifully adorned holiday trees, menorahs, and kinaras. The night kicks off with the Jingle Bell Parade. The South Florida Trail Riders will parade their decorated horses through the streets and the Davie Fire Department will deliver Santa to Town Hall. After the procession, residents can have their pictures taken with Santa in the Council Chambers. The winners of the tree decorating contest will also be announced. There is more for families to enjoy on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, which is just a short walk away. Kids can play in the twenty tons of holiday snow brought in just for the event. There will be free refreshments, a holiday magic show, a petting farm, bounce houses, climbing walls and more – all at no charge. “It is a great way for friends and families to get together and welcome the holidays,” said Special Events Director Bonnie Stafiej. Elizabeth Harris waits all year for the Davie’s Winter Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play Holiday Celebration. She remembers attending as a child and now brings her four children, who love to see all of the lights and participate in the festivities. This is the only opportunity they have to play in snow. “It is a great event,” said Harris. “We all have a great time picking out our favorite tree. The kids loved getting dressed in hats and mittens to play in the snow.”
After Ben Ankus, 15, met with a group of young adults at the Schott Communities, Mickey Mouse took on a whole new meaning. He taught the group how to draw the cartoon figure, touching many of them in a way he never thought possible. Cooper City’s Schott Communities is a private, not-for-profit agency founded to address the needs of persons who are deaf or disabled in South Florida. The Schott Center provides social and educational programs to more than 225 deaf or disabled people who live in the local communities as well as in Schott residences. Saturdays are particularly exciting at the Center, when students and volunteers spend the day playing games and charades, Ben Ankus, along with his parents, Joe and Stacey Ankus, dancing, working on the computer teaches a cartooning class at the Schott Center. and creating arts and crafts projects and more as part of the Compass program. Ben is one of the many volunteers who give their time, energy and compassion to the Center and its clients. Ben has always been interested in art. While the other kids were simply drawing a circle to represent an apple, Ben’s drawing was complete with detail and shadowing. He never took lessons and is self taught. His dream is to work for Pixar Animation Studios one day. Ben has been sharing his passion with others by teaching cartooning through art and art therapy. In July, he formalized his efforts and started a non-profit organization called Art Plus Heart. It all started three years ago when he was searching for a “Mitzvah” or “good deed” to do in preparation for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah. He called the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center to see if could put his talents to good use by teaching the special needs kids to draw. “I am so inspired by art and I want to inspire others to feel the same way,’ said Ben. “I want to use my talents to make a difference.” Ben has spent the past three summers working with the children at the Center’s Camp DNC. In September, Ben decided to share his talent with the Schott Communities. Although he woke Ben Ankus begins drawing Mickey Mouse for up feeling ill the morning he was supposed to a class at the Schott Center. teach, he miraculously felt better the moment he arrived and felt the energy in the room. He met with a small group of young adults who were excited to learn how to cartoon. He took out his white board and showed them how to draw Mickey Mouse, Sponge Bob, Hannah Montana and other characters in a few easy steps. They watched in awe as the cartoons came alive. When he finished, he helped each of them draw their own by tracing or free hand. Some, who never thought they could draw, walked away with masterpieces. “He showed them how easy it was and gave them the confidence they needed to draw their own cartoons,” said Stephanie Ankus, his mother. Ben mounted their drawings on construction paper so they could display it like real artwork. He gave each of them a signed copy of his own work to take home. “It is such a great feeling to teach them draw and help them feel like they are good at something,” said Ben. “They are so grateful when I am there. It means so much to me to be able to reach out to them and help them.” Ben will be returning to Schott Communities again this month. His sixteen-yearold sister, Emily, will also attend to help him with the drawings and share her musical talent with the group.

Why Take Care Of My Skin? By Greg Sanchez
I
t seems that every day we come across people who haven’t taken care of their skin, because they are unaware of what skin care is. We find more and more, that people are seeking to repair skin problems that could have easily been avoided. We hear comments like “Skin care? I don’t have acne.” People regularly groom their nails, brows, and hair. They can eat well, exercise, and meditate, and yet, all too often, they neglect taking care of their skin. The fact is that the most visible part of your body is your skin. When you think about being attractive, there is no substitute for the sensuality of smooth, silky, natural, healthy skin. It is simply in our design to love it. Some of the major benefits of skin care are: Appearance - Skin care has the immediate effect of cleaner, smoother, healthier skin that glows. It will also prolong your natural, youthful beauty by delaying the appearance of aging signs like skin spots, dull skin, wrinkles, sagging skin, and uneven texture. Psychological - There are two ways in which skin care is therapeutic. First, the process of taking care of the skin is very pampering and relieves stress. Second, in the same way that people feel great when they are in shape, having great skin helps people feel more confident and vibrant. Safety - Skin care helps prevent risks associated with skin cancer and other skin diseases, by providing protection from free radical damage and tools for prevention and recovery. It also helps to delay or avoid the risks of possible facial surgery for correction of aging signs that could have been prevented. Health - Your skin protects your body from the environment, and therefore takes the punishment of all the things that would otherwise harm your internal organs. It faces sun damage, dehydration, pollution, allergens, bacteria, and other things. The same way you brush your teeth, your health regime should include supporting your skin. Much of the benefit of skin care lies in the area of prevention. If you haven’t taken care of your skin and are starting to see skin aging signs, you are probably already too late for the full benefit. However, there is still much that can be repaired and there is future damage that can be delayed or prevented. In the process you will likely find, that not only is skin care a great solution for a healthier, happier, and more beautiful lifestyle, it is also a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying process when it is done correctly. To learn more about your specific needs, call us at 954-838-8883 to schedule your free skin analysis and consultation. fitness forum How to Conquer What You Are Currently Facing By Ellen Latham
A
s a fitness professional, I am focused on the physical. I do believe, however, that it is the mental aspects of changing behavior that really create breakthroughs. To achieve what we once thought impossible, we must make that mental jump. We must create a change in mental conversation. Betty wanted to lose 25 lbs., but she could not imagine herself doing it. This created a big problem. I can use every exercise technique and nutrition trick I know, but in the end Betty will NOT be successful. She will sabotage herself if she does not change her attitude. The fitness coaches at Ellen’s Ultimate Workout understand that Betty and others looking to create physical changes have to believe that they can achieve their goals. All classes in the studio are taught with exercise instruction, as well as the understanding that clients must OWN their goals to be successful. All clients are asked to create their own stories. They need to visualize how they want to live and feel. Life can throw unimaginable obstacles at us, but how we respond to our environment makes all the difference. And we can affect
how we respond by changing what is in our power to change - our attitude. At Ellen’s, we train the mind first and the body second. That is why we are so successful. Want to change? Remember, change can happen in an instant. As Tony Robbins says, “It’s the getting ready to change that takes time.” See the person you want to be and live their life everyday. How would that person, dress, eat, exercise, and deal with their stress. Live that ideal person in your mind… and you might be surprised when you become them one day.

A
s the holidays approach, many are searching for the perfect gift for friends, family and colleagues. A facial or massage is a great way to help alleviate stress and ailments and restore balance to the body and mind. Cooper City’s Massage Envy is offering a holiday special that benefits both the giver and receiver. With every purchase of a gift membership, the purchaser receives a free additional one hour massage session to be redeemed at the Cooper City location. In addition, the gift cards can be sent to loved ones out of town to be used at a clinic closest to the recipient. “In these difficult economic times a massage or a facial is more of a necessity than a luxury,” said Pam Altman, owner. “It is a wonderful gift to give yourself or someone else.” When the Cooper City location first opened two years ago, it only offered massages. The Altman’s have added many new services in an effort to give their clients Pam and Rick Altman, owners of Cooper City’s Massage Envy more choices. With the addition of Murad Healthy Skin Facials, it is only one of three Massage Envy locations in Broward County that has been converted to a spa. The Murad Healthy Skin Facials feature specially formulated products from world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad. They help clients achieve balanced, more youthful looking skin. Sessions begin with a skin analysis by a licensed, trained esthetician who recommends one of four 50-minute custom facials, including: Rapid Exfoliator Anti-Aging, Clarifying Enzyme Acne, Environmental Shield Vitamin C Infusion, and Sensitive Skin. Massage Envy also sells the full line of Murad retail products so clients can continue their skin care regimen at home. For their monthly pre-paid service, members can choose either a customized massage or facial, with a small fee for the facial products. As a celebration of their two year anniversary, when clients book a one-hour massage and a one-hour facial at the same time, they receive a free 1/2 hour upgrade on the massage and are able to have 2 ½ hours of pure enjoyment. Clients can choose from a variety of massages, depending on their needs. The Cooper City location recently added four new aromatherapy massages including:

Aches & Pains, Lavender Garden, Mint and Rosemary, and Anxiety Release. Clients leave with a bottle of aromatherapy lotion so they can reap the healing benefits at home. Another popular choice is the Hot Stone Therapy, which melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness, and increases circulation and metabolism. Each 90-minute Hot Stone session features the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body to allow for deeper relaxation of the muscles. Clients also love the new Deep Heat Relief Muscle Therapy, which is ideal for anyone who suffers from chronic pain or limited mobility due to athletic training, repetitive movements, and overuse.

All of the massage therapists are licensed, certified, registered and have years of experience. Massage therapy sessions start with a five minute consultation so that the therapist can customize the treatment to address any medical conditions, injuries, ailments or other areas of concern. Many enjoy extending their massage to 90 minutes, which allows the therapist to target a specific troubled area as well as provide a full body massage. As customers enter the treatment room, they can immediately relax as they listen to soothing, spa music and lie down on a padded table covered with a warming blanket and crisp clean sheets. Therapists use high quality hypo-allergenic massage creams and lotions. Massage Envy is open seven days a week, with convenient hours including late nights and weekends. Many customers come during lunch; after a long bike ride or run; once the kids are asleep or to celebrate a special occasion. There are nine single rooms, as well as one couple’s room that is perfect for couples, friends, or even a mother and daughter who want to experience a massage together. “Whether you are looking to relieve stress; lower your blood pressure or get some much needed relaxation, our flexible scheduling and affordable prices make enjoying a little slice of heaven easy, any time you like,” said Pam Altman.

it’s their business ABC Consignment Store Offers Quality Merchandise at Bargain Prices
A
t Davie’s ABC A Baby Consignment, customers are “saving today for their children’s tomorrow.” The 3,000 sq. ft. store carries a full line of gently used, name brand clothing, toys and accessories for children and infants, as well as maternity clothing. With more than 1,200 consignors, the store receives new merchandise daily. “As children grow, their needs and demands change constantly,” said Annette Caporella, owner. “Baby items can be very expensive and we offer a huge savings over retail. At ABC, parents can consign items for extra money and avoid paying full price on items kids use only for a few months.” Caporella speaks from experience. When her son, Matthew was born, she received an abundance of gifts from friends and family. There were swings, strollers, toys, clothing and much more. As he outgrew things, she put them in storage for a future garage sale. After a conversation with her twentyone year old daughter, Anna, her plans changed. Caporella owned a real estate title company, which was starting to slow down as a result of the decline in the market. She thought it was a good time to shift careers and decided to open a consignment store with her daughter. They put an ad in a local newspaper to see if the idea was viable and people immediately started bringing merchandise to the title company. In August 2008, they opened their first store and they have already moved twice to expand. ABC’s newest location is in Davie, 11528 W State Road 84, on the SW corner of State Road 84 and Hiatus, near the Young at Art Children’s Museum. It serves foster parents, day-care centers, churches, grandparents, and mothers with multiple children, as well as traditional bargain-hunters. The store has more than 20,000 items in inventory. Everything is nicely displayed and sorted by gender, size and type of clothing so things are easy to find. Parents can drop off their kids in a small play area as they browse through the clothing that ranges in size from preemie to a children’s size 10. The store also has maternity clothing, from sizes extra small to extra large, as well as accessories like breast pumps, Boppy pillows and nursery bras. It carries toys for all ages, including a large selection of Baby Einstein toys, videos and books; Thomas the Train trains and accessories; Leap Frog educational toys; Melissa and Doug wood puzzles, puppets and much more. Since many shoppers are looking for extra bargains during the holiday season, ABC has a special section filled with festive attire, winter clothing and toys. Some of the best selling gifts items include Tickle Me Elmo,

Wiggles toys, motorized vehicles, Tonka trucks, play houses, push cars, and kitchen sets. “Everyone loves a bargain during the holiday season,” said Caporella. “Our customers are able to buy more for less.” All of the store’s merchandise is categorized by colored tags, based on the month it is received in the store. Every 60 days, all items with the same color tag are marked down according to the length of time they are in inventory. Older items often sell for as much as 75% off the already discounted price. The store notifies customers by email when prices drop or mark downs occur. ABC is very particular about the merchandise it accepts. All clothing must be freshly laundered; name brand; in good condition and currently in style. Non-clothing items must be clean and in good condition; meet today’s safety standards and in working order with all parts included. “We want consignors to bring things that they themselves would want to buy,” said Caporella. The store makes it easy for consignors with their “drop and run” program. Any time the store is open, established consignors can drop off their items in a medium laundry basket or box and they receive a general list of the inventory. After the staff selects the items that are appropriate for the store’s customers, consignors can pick up unwanted items or have them donated to a local charity. When an item is sold, the consignor receives 50% of the selling price. ABC also makes it easy for consignors to keep track of the items they leave. The store uses a special software program, developed for consignment stores, which allows them to keep an automated account of all of the merchandise in inventory. They can email the consignor with a list of their items and what has sold. ABC A Baby Consignment is open Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 954-916-BABY (2229) or visit www.ababyconsignment.com. school news A.M.H.S. Mavericks Celebrate New Stadium
T
he Grand Opening Ceremony for the Maverick Stadium at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School was like a scene out of Friday Night Lights. It was the first time that the school was able to host a Friday night football game on its own field. More than 1,200 people came out, on Oct. 15, to celebrate the landmark event and to watch the A.M.H.S. Mavericks play their rivals, the Cooper City High School Cowboys. Parents and students, dressed in school colors with faces painted, showed tremendous school spirit as they cheered for their team. There were a variety of events, including an indoor B.B.Q., a Kidz Zone, t-shirt pitch, football toss and a radio remote with 99.9FM Kiss Country. A.M.H.S. senior, Sydnne Evans, rode a four legged Maverick across the field. The A.M.H.S. Civil Air Patrol escorted Southwest Ranches and A.M.H.S. VIP’s across the field for a ribbon cutting. Due to a lack of lighting and seating, the A.M.H.S. football team has played its “home” night games at Nova High School for the past five years. This was the first time that players were able to leave their own locker room and run through their own tunnel to play on their own field. The crowd counted down to the start of the game. “There was so much excitement in the air,” said Tony Massaro Athletic Director, who has coached the football team since the school opened in 1998. An ordinance in Southwest Ranches prevented the school from installing lights

on its field. In 2008, the school finally received approval to install lights on all three fields. In May 2010, it was approved for bleachers. By July 2010, construction had already begun. “As a college prep high school it goes without saying that A.M.H.S. has strong academics and the addition of the football stadium helps to provide a complete high school experience for our students,” said A.M.H.S. Principal Richard Jean. “We are especially grateful to the town of Southwest Ranches who have understood and worked with us to make this celebration possible.” The Maverick Football Stadium has 2,257 seats, including 98 chair backs on the Main grandstand on the east side of the stadium. On the west side, there are 276 seats slated for high school bands. The Main Grandstand features the school colors, with teal beams, black risers and sliver benches. The 8’ x 30’ control booth sits at the top of the grandstand. “The Maverick Stadium is a crucial piece towards the improvement of our overall athletic facilities,” said Massaro. In the near future, A.M.H.S. is planning to upgrade the track and athletic fields to complement its Maverick football, flag football, soccer, track and field, and lacrosse teams. A.M.H.S. is located at 5451 S. Flamingo Road, in Southwest Ranches. For more information, call 954-434-8820.

FDA Approval Does Not Guarantee Safety By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette
B
io-Identical Hormone therapy has been absolutely life changing for hundreds of my clients. The symptoms of fatigue, insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain etc. can be debilitating if left untreated. Occasionally, candidates for bio-identical hormone treatment are apprehensive about starting treatment because the Bio-Identical Sottopelle Hormone Treatment is not FDA approved. Here is some information on what FDA approval means and what it guarantees. What does FDA approval mean? FDA approval is granted after a drug has gone through rigorous clinical trials to prove its safety and efficacy for a specific treatment. But is this really true? Let’s take a look at the drug Premarin (synthetic conjugated estrogen derived from a pregnant horses’ urine) which was placed on the market in 1942. It became the most frequently dispensed drug in the United States between 1990-1995, regardless of multiple studies through the late 1980’s proving this drug placed women at an increased risk for heart attacks, stroke and breast cancer. Over 13 years later in 2002, the FDA announced it will more “carefully evaluate this drug.” What does FDA approval mean to the pharmaceutical companies? Once the drug is approved, it allows pharmaceutical companies to market the drug for the approved condition to recoup cost of research and testing. FDA Approval does not ensure everyone who takes the drug will benefit from it. For a clinical trial to be considered successful, it is not necessary for everyone to experience positive effects. Some drugs receiving FDA approval do not even have the majority of patients in the research trial experience a positive improvement. The criteria for approval of the drug, is based on the patients in the research trial having “clinically significant” improvement as compared to those receiving a placebo. There is no set criteria for a percentage or specific number that must be obtained to make it clinically significant. FDA Approval does not assure that patient will not suffer side effects from taking the drug. Package inserts list many side effects. FDA Approval does not guarantee that the medication prescribed will be used for the same indication (treatment) that was researched in the drug trial when approval was granted. Approximately 1 in 5 drugs prescribed – are prescribed as off-label usage. These drugs are being prescribed for something different than which the drug originally received FDA approval. FDA approval does not guarantee that insurance companies will pay for the medication. Insurance companies set their own policies for what is to be covered – typically based on price. Newer drugs that have no generic counterpart are usually expensive and insurance companies will often try to avoid paying for them. In addition, insurance companies sometimes use the lack of FDA approval and certain of-label prescriptions to deny claims. Are compounded Bio-Identical Hormones unsafe because they are not FDA approved? Compounded medications are regulated by state boards of pharmacy. They are not FDA approved because FDA approval is designed to regulate mass-production of drugs. Compounded medications are specifically compounded to meet the unique needs of an individual based on the physician’s prescription. Moreover, Bio-identical hormones – like all compounded medications are made from FDA and US Pharmacopeia (USP) registered materials – the same materials used by pharmaceutical manufacturers. Summary. Don’t let FDA approval deter you from a life changing treatment that is biologically identical to your own body’s hormones and documented to be safe and efficacious as compared to the synthetic hormones which have received FDA Approval. Make the informed choice and live life to its fullest. he holidays are the time of the year when maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging. The temptation to overeat increases at holiday gatherings and the busyness of holiday shopping causes some people to forgo their exercise regimen. Registered Dietitians, Gina Sweat and Lilian Craggs offer us these practical tips.
How do I go to a holiday celebration and avoid overeating?
There are a few ways to accomplish this. First, avoid going to a celebration on an empty stomach. Skipping meals can lead to consuming more calories at the event. Another technique you can use is eating more vegetables than fatty and sugary foods. Keep in mind that it is not impolite to tell the host that you are full and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much.
It is my year to host a holiday party. What can I do to make it healthier and less fattening than traditional holiday parties?
You can always offer healthy alternatives. For example, try substituting baked apples with cinnamon and fat free whipped cream for the traditional apple pie dessert. You may also offer diced apples sprinkled with caramel sauce, or a simple fruit salad. One can still enjoy a sweet treat without exceeding calories.
What is an easy way to use exercise to help prevent weight gain during the holidays?
If you know you are going to consume extra calories, plan to exercise more the day before and after to compensate for the extra calories. In addition, taking a 15 to 20 minute walk after eating helps digestion and burns a few extra calories.
Does holiday time necessarily mean I have to overeat?

Change how you think of the holidays. Think of them as a time to enjoy family and friends rather than a time to indulge in food and extra calories. Instead of focusing on the food, spend the time connecting with your loved ones. Friends and family can be more fulfilling than food.
Sometimes the holidays become stressful not only for weight management but also from shopping and holiday crowds. What are some simple tips to reduce these stressors?
If you realize that you are feeling stressed, try doing something that brings you joy instead of eating. This can be reading a book, getting a massage, walking your dog, among many other activities. We also encourage people to plan ahead. A simple tip is to prepare the days’ meals ahead of time and use the calendar or reminder feature to help you shop early. Planning can help you avoid the stress of crowds which could lead to eating fatty or overly-sugary holiday foods. Don’t let the stress of the holidays lead you to emotional eating. Eat to respond to your body’s physiological hunger rather than “mental” hunger. A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?
Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic itself. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.
Every life deserves world class care.

Dining Out Vienna Café and Wine Bar Blends Classic and Contemporary Cuisine
By Stacey Bomser
I
f you’re bored with burgers and fries or pizza and pasta, you need to try Vienna Café and Wine Bar. It’s anything but ordinary. From its quaint cottage setting to the artistically prepared culinary creations, every meal is memorable. Vienna Café and Wine Bar puts a contemporary twist on classical Northern European cuisine. Here, owner Per Jacobsen brings his favorite foods from his native land of Denmark to Davie. “Danish food is rooted in German and Austrian foods. They are similar in profile and ingredients,” he explains, noting that this type of cuisine focuses on fresh ingredients, as well as veal and seafood. Jacobsen, a classically-trained chef who has worked at some of the finest hotels, resorts and cruise lines in the world, opened the restaurant twelve years ago. For years he ran the kitchen while his wife, Linda, and daughter, Jody, took care of the service side. Today, he serves more as the maitre d’, greeting guests and arranging private parties, and has turned over his apron to Chef Courtney Burks. Always a chef at heart, Jacobsen works closely with Chef Courtney to create the menu. “We change it twice a year to keep it fresh,” he notes. “Plus we offer daily
delicious three-course meal daily after 4:30pm. It features either soup or salad, choice of entrée from a special menu, plus dessert for $25. The restaurant also offers a weekday lunch special, half a sandwich with a cup of soup, for $8.50. Two homemade soups are offered each day, one cream-based and the other non-cream. The restaurant offers a variety of wines to accompany your meal. After all, the name is Vienna Café and Wine Bar. It features 160 wines, with 20 different wines available by the glass. “We offer wine tasting dinners on the second Tuesday of every month,” states Jacobsen. Plus, on Mondays and Tuesdays the restaurant offers halfpriced wine bottles. Breakfast/brunch is served every weekend. Choices include the signature Vienna French Toast, banana pancakes, apple crepes, Eggs Benedict or Florentine, Spanish frittata and much more. There is surely something to please any palate. Vienna Café and Wine Bar features a private dining room which seats up to 30 people. It’s the perfect place to host a holiday party, bridal or baby shower, special celebration or other event. Guests can create a custom menu or enjoy the regular restaurant menu. lunch and dinner specials. There are always two local seafood dishes featured plus a meat special every day.” Of course, there are also several dishes that have become quite popular with patrons. These items have been on the Vienna Café and Wine Bar menu since the day it first opened. Guests will always find Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional veal dish with pan roasted potatoes, red cabbage, vegetables and pickled cucumber. The Frikadeller (Danish Meat Balls) is another classic. The pork, veal and beef meat balls are served with red cabbage, pan roasted potatoes and vegetables in a demi-glace sauce with pickled cucumber. The Roasted Duck features a crisp half duck, served with red cabbage, candied potatoes and bing cherry sauce. And the Twin Potato Crusted Fillet of Salmon is served in a pinot noir sauce with asparagus and carrots. Another specialty is Vienna Café’s signature Sonoma Salad. “We created this after tasting a similar salad during a visit to Sonoma, California,” explains Jacobsen. “We loved it so much that we decided to turn it into our own.” He changed the recipe a bit to include some of his favorite things. It features mescaline greens, raisins and walnuts tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette and topped with gorgonzola cheese and diced apples. Guests can add grilled chicken to make it a meal. Everything at Vienna Café and Wine Bar is prepared fresh and to taste. Guests can order their meal without salt, butter or oil. The restaurant can also accommodate those diners with special dietary restrictions including gluten-free. “Because we cook all food to order, it is easy to adapt our food to what people want or need,” says Jacobsen. While the restaurant offers a full menu, one of the best ways to truly experience Vienna Café and Wine Bar is with the Taste of Vienna dinner. Diners can enjoy this

Davie Celebrates Government Week By Debby Teich
A
group of Davie students has a much better idea of what it takes to run a City. Some even got a chance to make important decisions when they played the role of “Mayor” for the day. It was all part of Government week, which was held from Oct. 18 to 22. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, sponsored an educational program called “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it,” which was designed to educate school-aged children about city government functions. In the spirit of the program, the Town of Davie provided school-aged groups with educational tours of Davie Town Hall to inform them about their local government. “We want our young residents to understand how government works and why it is Students from Gloria Dei Lutheran School visit Town Hall during Government week.

important,” said Special Projects Director Bonnie Stafiej, who organizes the program. More than 200 students, from second grade to high school participated. They spent time touring the Town Hall administrative offices, and visiting with the Mayor, Town Council members and the Town Administrator. The students came with a list of questions. They wanted to know the salaries of government officials and employees; how much schooling the jobs require; why it takes so many people to run a city; why the City keeps raising taxes and more. The older students had an opportunity to participate in a mock Council meeting in the Council chambers. The “mayor” and “council members” responded to the “issues” raised at the “public hearing.” “We want the kids to understand that every resident has a right to come to the council meetings to voice their opinions or ask a question,” said Stafiej. Stafiej says that the City has an open door policy and that City officials are very accessible. If residents do not want to go to council meetings, they can ask questions online or by phone. Legally Speaking
Holiday Cheer? By Evan Baron
M
ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or final judgment is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and as such last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past two years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day”. As an example, in even numbered years, such as 2010, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered please feel free to contact my office at 954 385-9160.

Zona’s Top Ten Reasons to List Your Home Before the Holidays By Zona Horton
There is a tendency for Sellers to put off listing their home for sale until sometime after the holidays. However, based on my experience and further research, I have uncovered my Top Ten reasons why you should list right before now. REASON NO. TEN: Usually, people who look for a home during the holidays are in a time crunch – especially if they are visiting from another area of the world. Many people come to South Florida for a holiday visit and never leave. REASON NO. NINE: Serious buyers have fewer residences to choose from during the holidays. Historically, inventory drops before and during the holidays. REASON NO. EIGHT: Houses typically show better when they are elegantly and seasonally decorated. Creating a sense of warmth and friendly gatherings evoke emotions in the buyer – which leads me to reason number seven -REASON NO. SEVEN: Buyers are more emotional during the holidays. Perhaps there is something displayed in your home that takes a buyer back to his childhood memories. The strongest sensory memory that humans possess is “sense of smell.” REASON NO. SIX: Because many take time off from work for holiday shopping, parties, and out-of-town company, Buyers have more time to look for a home during the holidays. The scurry of buying activity during the season could overflow into the scurry of buying a new home.

REASON NO. FIVE: By selling in the last or first quarter of the year, it may be much easier to schedule the move with the moving company, because this is considered the moving industry’s slow time of the year. REASON NO. FOUR: Some Buyers may be starting a new job after the first of the year. They may be “hanging around” for that shrinking holiday bonus and need their current employment to qualify. My experience with relocation would bear out that transferees cannot wait until spring to buy. They may need to get their children settled into a new school prior to the winter-spring semester. Therefore, you must be on the market now. REASON NO. THREE: You control the showings. The Seller has the option to restrict showings. Even though a Buyer may be eager to see your home, sometimes NOT being able to see the property right away (Hide-the-Bride psychology) may make him more eager to make an offer once he is afforded the opportunity to actually view the home. REASON NO. TWO: Some people must buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. And – REASON NO. ONE: Homestead Exemption! According to the Broward County Property Appraiser website: To be eligible for an exemption in the current year, you must have owned AND resided in your Broward home, condo or co-op unit as your permanent residence as of January 1 of this year. An eligible Broward County property owner in 2009 saved anywhere from $661 to $998 (depending upon the millage rates in your city) in taxes due to the Homestead Exemption. In 2009, the average Broward homeowner with Homestead also saved an additional $1,012 in taxes because of the Save Our Homes benefit. Additionally -- once the real estate market rebounds -- all Homesteaded properties will benefit from the “Save Our Homes” 3% tax assessment cap that automatically comes with the Homestead Exemption (starting in the year after you first obtain homestead). The SOH cap limits assessment increases during years of rising market values.” (bcpa.net) Give me a call today to list your home. Then get packin’! Legally Speaking
Mortgage Lender Myths They Want You to Believe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
any mortgage lenders and servicing companies are taking advantage of the public’s sense of desperation and lack of information to strong-arm homeowners into signing one-sided loan modification agreements. Prior to signing any loan modification agreement or making any other significant decision affecting your home loan, it is critical that every homeowner be fully aware of the following “myths” that many mortgage lenders want you to believe.
Myth No. 1: If I signed for a bad loan, I have to suffer the consequences of that decision.
In reality, federal and state laws impose severe penalties on lenders that engaged in predatory lending practices. These penalties include cancellation of the entire loan and/or a refund of all payments made by the borrower, including any down payment. More importantly, these penalties and remedies related to the original loan transaction may even be available against the current mortgage company.
Myth No. 2: Once a foreclosure is filed, the bank can immediately seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages and repossess any vehicles you own to satisfy your mortgage debt.
Florida law prevents any lender from seizing any of your assets until after a final judgment of foreclosure, and only after authorization from the Court is obtained to satisfy a “deficiency judgment” (i.e., the difference between the amount owed to the bank and the amount for which the property sold at the foreclosure sale).
Myth No. 3: If you are negotiating a loan modification with your lender, they cannot proceed with a foreclosure of your home.
Actually, lenders can and will use the foreclosure process, especially during a loan modification application, as a means of coercing the homeowner to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement that may even contain a provision where the homeowner gives up all defenses, claims or counter claims he/she may possess against the lender.
Myth No. 4: Your lender is entitled to review all your financial information (assets, tax filings, pay stubs, etc.), even during a foreclosure.
The law in Florida is crystal clear and it states that a party to a lawsuit may not obtain financial information from its opponent at any time prior to a final judgment. Despite this clear principle, most homeowners who are already in foreclosure willingly provide their financial information to their lender under the guise that this information will be considered by the lender as part of a loan modification application. By doing so, the homeowner provides its adversary (the bank) with all the information needed to identify and seize any of the homeowner’s assets if a foreclosure final judgment is obtained.
Myth No. 5: The lender will take into account your best interests and act in good faith to offer you the best terms possible during a loan modification.
In actuality, the lender’s only concern is their “bottom line.” If the deal does not make sense financially to them, they will force you to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement, or attempt to force you out of your home through a foreclosure process. We hope you are able to use the information in this article as a tool to assist you in any preliminary discussions with your lender about your home loan. Community News Fantastic Finish Planned for Get FIT Weston
By Stacey Bomser
F
or weeks Weston residents have been walking, running, pedaling, punching, dancing and breathing their way to a healthier life. It’s all been part of Get FIT Weston, an incredible community-wide initiative to make Weston the Fittest City in Florida. The sixty-day program culminates on Sunday, December 12th with the Rotary Club of Weston’s “Run for Tomorrow” and Cleveland Clinic Get FIT Festival. Get FIT Weston is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Weston, the City of Weston, Cleveland Clinic Florida, and three fitness facilities in the Weston community: the YMCA of Broward County, Billy Beck III Personal Performance & Training Center, and the Midtown Athletic Club. They have all joined forces to encourage everyone – young and old, out of shape, in shape, or those just wanting to get into better shape – to get active and make healthy lifestyle choices. Participants received access to unlimited fitness programs, as well as numerous health and wellness resources, in order to get them in shape and ready for the Rotary’s “Run for Tomorrow.” The race entry fee was covered in the nominal $20 Get FIT Weston fee. So, the Rotary Club of Weston is anticipating its largest

dents training for the big race. In keeping with the entire Get FIT philosophy, it’s not about winning but rather being healthy. Anyone of any fitness level is welcome to participate in this year’s “Run for Tomorrow.” The 5K Run/Walk is ideal for families or those individuals just beginning a fitness program. There is also a halfmarathon sanctioned by Weston-based race coordinator Split Second Timing. It is the nation’s leading road race timing company. It is also responsible for sanctioning the ING marathons in Miami and New York. This is the third year Billy Beck III Personal Performance & Training Center has been the title sponsor of the “Run for Tomorrow.” Gould says this event is a natural fit for the fitness and wellness guru. “Billy leads the challenge to try and help everyone become more

turnout ever for this year’s event, which promises to be bigger and better than ever with the addition of the Get FIT Festival. “Run For Tomorrow” is the oldest and largest running event in Weston. The Rotary Club of Weston started the race in 1998. It has certainly grown over the years, and has changed names too to reflect the Rotary’s commitment to the community. Marty Gould, Weston Rotarian and co-chair of Get FIT Weston, says the name “Run for Tomorrow” is significant. “The Rotary Club of Weston is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in Broward County. We want their ‘tomorrows’ to be healthier, happier, and filled with hope for a brighter future.” Since the run’s inception, the Weston Rotary has donated more than $500,000 to local charities. “This year we are beginning a new initiative, associated with our Get FIT Weston program, to fund physical activity classes in the Weston elementary schools,” says Gould. In fact, many students have enrolled in the Get FIT Weston program. They are among the hundreds of resi-

physically fit. He’ll be our chief cheerleader on Run Day.” Get FIT Weston partner Cleveland Clinic Florida is sponsoring the Get FIT Festival. This day-long, free festival at Weston Town Center is open to the entire community. You do not need to participate in the “Run for Tomorrow” to attend.
Gould says there will be more than 40 exhibitors, showcasing everything from health foods and supplements to the latest exercise equipment and health services. There will live entertainment throughout the day, as well as martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations, and yoga and Zumba workouts. Children can play on the mini football field, made out of real grass. Cleveland Clinic Florida will provide on-site health screenings consisting of blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), stretching and balance assessments. There will be additional health testing and screenings in the Walgreens/AARP Wellness Bus. This fitness-focused festival will be the perfect way to wrap-up Get FIT Weston. The program has been embraced by the entire community and the results have been phenomenal. “It just shows that anyone can improve their health and wellness by doing just one thing – anything – to change their behavior,” says Gould. “Our Rotary Club is made up of regular people. So many of our own members have taken steps to improve their health by losing weight, exercising, and adopting healthier eating habits. If we can do it, anyone can. It’s not about running a half-marathon. It’s about taking the first steps to becoming a healthier you. Everyone can Get FIT Weston!” The Rotary Club of Weston’s 13th Annual Run for Tomorrow 5K and Half-Marathon presented by Billy Beck III and the Get FIT Festival following the race take place on Sunday, December 12th at Weston Town Center. Race registration begins at 5:30am. The half-marathon starts at 6:30am and the 5K Run/Walk begins at 7:20am. The Get FIT Festival runs from 9am until 4pm. To pre-register for the “Run for Tomorrow” sign up at www.runfortomorrow.com. The cost is $20 if you sign up in advance. If you register on the day of the race, the cost is $35 for the 5K and $45 for the half-marathon. To learn more about Get FIT Weston visit www.getfitweston.com.

Neurosurgery & You - How Can Minimally Invasive Surgery Help? By Alexander Poisik, M.D. and Joseph Martinez, M.D.
A
s heads of the Division of Neurosurgery at Memorial Hospital West, Drs. Alexander Poisik and Joseph Martinez care for and perform surgery on a variety of disorders and injuries of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves. Both have advanced training and expertise in Complex Neurosurgery of the Spine, which comprises the largest portion of their practices. They are experienced with traditional “open” surgeries and adept at more modern Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery techniques which continue to grow in popularity because of their effectiveness and improved recovery times. What is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery? Essentially, it is performing spine surgery through small incisions, usually an inch long, which allows for less damage to surrounding supporting tissues, less pain and quicker recovery times. Do I have to stay in the hospital for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery? For many of the procedures (e.g. discectomies, laminectomies, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty or foraminotomies), patients can go home the same day as surgery. Other procedures, like interbody fusions or thoracic/lumbar fusions, are better suited to a short stay in the hospital afterward. What kinds of cases can be done with Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery? Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is effective for many kinds of cases. Some examples include: ▸▸ Discectomy – Removal of bulging or herniated discs or disc material that are compressing nerves and causing leg or arm pain (radiculopathy). ▸▸ Laminectomy – Removal of bone and ligament causing pressure on spinal nerves (stenosis). ▸▸ Cervical (neck) foraminotomy – Removal of bone to enlarge the space (intervertebral foramen) where a given nerve root leaves the cervical spinal canal. This alleviates pain by reducing pressure on the nerve root. ▸▸ Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LIF) – Removal of disc material and replacement with bone graft and, typically, a structural support device made of bone, carbon fiber, a specialized plastic polymer or titanium. This is followed by placement of pedicle screws into the adjacent vertebral bodies via a minimally invasive “percutaneous” (through-the-skin) method then connecting each side together with connecting rods. ▸▸ Vertebroplasty – This technique treats compression fractures of the spine. This is done by placing into the vertebral body, via x-ray guidance, a needle containing a specialized acrylic bone cement. The cement is then injected into the fractured bone. When it hardens several minutes later the bone is strengthened and stabilized and pain relief is common shortly after the procedure is completed. ▸▸ Kyphoplasty – This is also used to treat compression fractures of the spine but contains the additional step of first temporarily introducing fluid-filled balloons into the vertebral body. This is intended to restore height to the vertebral body and simultaneously creates a space to be filled by the cement. ▸▸ Thoracic/Lumbar Fusion – Placement of “percutaneous” pedicle screws via several small (5-7 mm) incisions made on the patient’s back then connecting each side together using connecting rods. These are most typically done for stabilizing traumatic injuries to the spine. After appropriate healing, these screws and rods can be removed if necessary.
