very year around this time we take a deep breath and wonder what happened. Summer is over; the vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds; the kids are back in school; the Halloween sugar rush has barely worn off and we are in full preparation for Thanksgiving. What? Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye, the entire year seems to have gone by. Another year of family, friends and togetherness; of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. While we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a fancy turkey feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and let’s enjoy each other. Happy Thanksgiving! Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

green thumb gardening Fall is a Great Time to Plant enjoyable and inspiring at this time of year. Grab the kids and the dog and enjoy apple cider and fresh baked goods as you stroll through the garden center’s family-friendly environment. During the fall, you will see a wider variety of colorful flowering plants than at any other time of the year. Over 100 varieties of annuals, whose sole purpose in life is to bloom their little hearts out, are available in a multitude of colors. Hanging baskets with mixed plantings are bountiful and are relatively easy to care for during the cooler months because their water needs are reduced. It’s a great time to plant any type of tree, but flowering trees in particular, because they will be established by the spring bloom time. The best choices for consistent blooming are Magnolias, Tabebulias, Cassias and Poincianas. Happy Gardening!

he cool weather has arrived and we will soon be the envy of the nation. For the next six months, we will have fabulous opportunities to enjoy outdoor living at its finest. You can dine on your deck; play ball with your kids; read outdoors; socialize around the grill or just lounge on a chair and enjoy the privacy and beauty of your backyard. With the upcoming holidays and guests visiting your home, fall is a great time to spruce up your outdoor surroundings and add some fresh color to liven things up. Fall is also the best season for planting. In cooler weather, plants are less stressed and require less water because of slower evaporation and photosynthesis. The plant’s energy will be more directed towards growing roots and establishing itself. Shrubs and trees planted now will be well prepared to successfully endure next year’s brutal summer weather. The common belief that spring planting is best is not true. Plants put more effort into growing leaves rather than roots during the spring and thus may not be established properly when summer arrives. Health and Wellness

Skin Care Simplified By Greg Sanchez

W

hen it comes to skin care, there seem to be as many different solutions to improving your skin as there are specialists. “Overwhelming” is probably the best term to describe investigating the options, and finding the ones that fit your lifestyle and are ideal for your specific skin’s needs. But it doesn’t have to be so complicated.

There are a few basic things you can do to have great skin:

▸ Exercise your body at least three times per week. Healthy skin comes with a healthy body. Like the rest of your body, you need good circulation, and a healthy immune system to feed your skin cells, remove toxins, and fight disease. Cardiovascular exercise and massages are keys to improving your circulation and activating your defenses. ▸ Avoid excessive stress. When you stress over a prolonged period, your body produces excess cortisol, which can deteriorate tissue and reduce your immune system defenses, leaving your skin without luster, and increasing your vulnerability to infections. Find creative outlets; don’t overload your schedule; be optimistic; and pamper yourself on a regular basis to keep stress in check. ▸ Help your skin oil to stay in balance. Always maintain good hygiene, and seek to preserve the natural skin oils when you wash your skin. Use a high quality mild cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type (avoid soap bases and chemicals), and eat foods that are lean, cooked without heavy oils, and are mostly plant based. ▸ Renew your skin. Help your natural renewal process by exfoliating several times per week and getting peels as necessary. There is an immense complexity in available peels. To keep it simple, understand that the full range of enzymatic and chemical (acid) peels, the gamut of dermabrasion options, and laser skin resurfacing are all essentially the same thing. They all remove the outer skin layer, whether it is abraded, chemically dissolved, enzyme consumed, or laser burned. Regardless of your preference, it is advisable to start with a milder treatment and gradually increase the intensity. ▸ Protect your skin from free radical damage. The two keys to protecting are using a high quality physical sunscreen (the best active ingredients are micronized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, not chemicals), and antioxidants, which can be supplied into the skin via your diet (with a variety of vegetables, grains, and fish), or via serums with active delivery systems. ▸ Address signs of aging proactively. The major symptoms of aged skin are visible expression lines, sagging skin, discoloration, and uneven texture. Any of these will make you look older, but there are products that can help improve skin-aging signs. One of the keys to a youthful complexion is increasing the elastin and collagen content in the skin cells, which can be done with peptide infusion treatments and products. There are product solutions for skin spots, dark circles around the eyes, and to firm or repair skin. ▸ Moisturize your skin regardless of skin type. Skin moisture is obtained through the water you drink, and by avoiding highly salty or sugar (condiment) loaded foods, and the application of a high quality skin moisturizer that is skin type and condition appropriate. Addressing these needs will make you look much younger and feel great. As far as treatments and products, the best idea is to rely on a qualified skin care professional that you trust to perform a skin analysis and guide you to the right products for your skin type and goals. Sinless Skin is a spa at the IKEA shops that focuses on delivering the highest level of affordable luxury in skin care and hair removal, offering a wide variety within their specialties of organic facials, body treatments, massage, and hair removal services. Their promotions include a first visit incentive with discounts and a free skin analysis, the Sinless Reward program, corporate programs, spa packages, series discounts, and highlighted periodic offers. Injectable Fillers Offer Many Options By Maria Angelica Briceño, Laser Center & Med Spa

I

njectable fillers are substances that are used to enhance the fullness of soft tissues, primarily in the face. Injectable fillers can be used alone or in combination with other procedures such as wrinkle reduction by injection (BOTOX®) to enhance facial appearance, or to refine the results of surgical rejuvenation. Some fillers are based on natural substances derived from the human body; others are synthetic, biocompatible compounds. When it comes to injectable fillers, what’s in a brand name? The options may seem overwhelming and confusing. There are many brand names with several ingredients, which have different, but perhaps overlapping, uses. Here is an explanation of the different types of injectable fillers on the market, sorted by their main ingredients:

it’s Your time to stop time!

Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers:

Under the brand name Radiesse, each syringe contains CaHA particles that are suspended in a water-based solution (available in 0.3, 1, or 1.3 ml) to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin folds around the mouth and nose as well as fill certain scars. The filler is biocompatible, non-toxic, and non-allergenic; results last for up to nine months or more. Radiesse is FDA-approved for medical purposes and is used off-label for cosmetic treatment. It is not recommended around the lips because of its larger particle size.

Hyaluronic Acid-Based Fillers:

Brand names containing hyaluronic acid include Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Dermalive, and Hylaform. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (carbohydrate) that exists in human tissue. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers treat nasolabial folds, frown lines, crow’s feet, and lips. Hyaluronic acid fillers are said to offer longer lasting results than collagenbased fillers.

FOR FIRST TREATMENT FILLERS (MUST PRESENT COUPON, EXP. 11/30/10)

Human-Based Collagen Fillers:

Human-based collagen is used under brand names such as CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast to build volume in facial areas including the lip area (such as for lip augmentation), above and below the eyes, crow’s feet, the nasolabial fold area (the grooves from your nose to your mouth), and frown lines. Human-based collagen fillers are biocompatible and produce results that may last for four or more months.

Bovine-Based Collagen Fillers:

The brand names of bovinebased collagen fillers include Zyderm and Zyplast. This form of collagen is derived from cows and may be used to add volume to facial areas such as the lip area, above and below the eye, crow’s feet, the nasolabial fold area, and frown lines. Because some people are allergic to bovinebased collagen, your doctor will perform an allergy test. Results may last for four or more months, but as with human-based collagen, if you continue to have treatments over time, some of the collagen will remain, and results may last a lifetime. Laser Center & Med Spa is a full-service medical aesthetic center and day spa. community news Sample Jewish Food, Have Fun, and Help the Hungry at the Nosh Fest II

S

outh Florida residents will once again have an opportunity to participate in the largest Jewish Food Festival in the Southeast. Nosh Fest II includes Jewish foods, cooking competitions, arts and crafts, children’s activities, local entertainment and more. And it is all for a good cause. The Nosh fest will be held on Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Cooper City’s Temple Beth Emet, 4807 S. Flamingo Rd. The Nosh Fest was started last year by members of Temple Beth Emet for the primary purpose of providing food to those in need. Organizers recognized the unprecedented levels of unemployment and economic distress throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties and they wanted to find a way to help. They also wanted to find a fun way to share Jewish cuisine and culture with their neighbors. They created the Nosh Fest and, in lieu of an admission fee, asked people to bring a donation of two canned goods per person to benefit the local food banks. More than 1,100 people attended last year’s event, even though it conflicted with a Dolphin game. The Temple’s initial effort was so successful that this year’s Nosh Fest committee decided to increase the size and scope of the 2nd Annual Food Festival in order to attract more attendees, and to collect a greater bounty of food in time for Thanksgiving, Hanukah and Christmas. Organizers are expecting more than 2,000 people this year. The festival is an opportunity for attendees to “Nosh” or “taste” traditional Jewish style foods. Some of the menu items will include Lower East Side Corned Beef Sandwiches, Romanian Pastrami Sandwiches, Brooklyn Mini-Bagels with Lox & Cream Cheese, Israeli Falafel, Aunt Sadie’s Matzo Ball Soup, Sweet Noodle Kugel, Peppy’s Potato Pancakes, Hot Dogs, Tati’s Blintzes, Mini-Stuffed Cabbage, Knish, Pretzel Dogs, Israeli Salad, Ruggulah, Black & White Cookies and much more. Local food venders will also sell snacks and treats. For those who want to take a short break from noshing, there is plenty to do. This year, organizers added arts and craft vendors, from the South

Florida community, who will showcase their original work. The arts and crafts make great gifts for the holidays. Art enthusiasts can also join Sandy Lazarus for an art demonstration. She will offer tips on starting a landscape, working with acrylics, mixing paint and blending colors. There will also be entertainment by Platinum Gold and other local performers, as well as a variety of activities for children. Novice chefs will have an opportunity to test their skills and share their recipes. During an individual cooking competition, judges will decide who makes the best challah, latkes [potato pancakes], kugel, and other favorite family recipes. Eight teams will also battle each other in a competition modeled after several television shows. Professional chefs from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts will lead the onsite cooking teams. A distinguished panel of judges will determine who earns the title of Nosh Fest Champion. The judges’ panel includes experts like Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congressman Ted Deutch, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Cooper City Mayor Debby Eisinger and others. Canned foods collected at the Nosh Fest will be donated to local food banks and pantries serving South Florida’s residents. Some of the beneficiaries include Feeding South Florida (formerly known as the Daily Bread Food Bank), which provides food to approximately 800 other not-for-profit organizations throughout South Florida; WECARE Food Pantry, which assists all people in need in Broward County regardless of age, race, religion, gender, nationality or disability on an emergency basis and at holiday times; and the Food Bank operated by the Jewish Family Service of Broward County, which provides a variety of services to persons and families in need, including a food pantry, counseling, and financial assistance. In addition to the canned food donations, Nosh Fest has arranged for all prepared food that is not consumed at the event on Nov. 21 to be picked up by Feeding South Florida for distribution to its beneficiary organizations. The Nosh Fest is just one of many ways that members of Temple Beth Emet reach out to those in need. Each Feb. or March, the Temple coordinates Mitzvah Day, when one thousand members of the Congregation perform acts of kindness at the Temple and throughout Broward County. In September, it conducts food drives during the High Holidays to provide for those in need. This year members donated more than 5,000 pounds of food to Feeding South Florida. “We invite the entire community to join us at the Nosh Fest,” said Stuart Silver, event chair. “It is a great opportunity for families to sample some Jewish-style food, have fun, and help the needy.” Two canned goods per person are required for admission. For information on the Nosh Fest, visit www.noshfest.org or call 954-442-7070. For information on Temple Beth Emet, visit www.templebethemet.org.

he Actors Community Theatre of Davie will kick off its 2010-2011 season this month with the production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. The show tells the story of the mental and emotional demise of a determined, yet fragile, repressed and delicate Southern lady (Blanche) born to a once-wealthy family of Mississippi planters. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Nov. 12, 13, 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13, 14, 20 and 21. The show’s director, Jack Annunziata, has been involved in performing arts for most of his life. He currently works at South Broward High Schools as an acting coach. He got involved with Davie’s community theater after he auditioned for a role in Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians. He became a member of the Board of Directors and never left. He has already directed several shows for the Actors Community Theater. “There is a certain magic to live theater that film cannot capture,” said Annunziata. “There are no second takes.” The Actors Community Theatre, located at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater for the past eleven years. Many choose simply to attend, while others get involved in a variety of other ways. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. The board’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year and then sends out audition notices Michele Verdi, as Blanche, and John F. Hernandez, throughout South Florida. to more than 80. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. Rehearsals start three months prior to opening and a committee designs and builds the set. The plays are performed eight times over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out. Fern Katz, 72, has been in several performances. “It is such so much fun to be on stage,” said Katz. “Acting allows me to express myself and lose myself in whatever character I play. I am constantly learning and using new acting skills. At my age, it is wonderful to still be learning new things.” Michele Verdi, as Blanche, and John The season’s second show, Herb Gardner’s A F. Performances are from Feb. 18 to 27. The last play of the season is Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, which is the story of Socialist and novelist, Charles Condomine, who invites an eccentric medium and clairvoyant to his house to conduct a séance. Ghosts appear and the fun begins. Performances are from May 20 to 29. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. For information, call Fern Katz, at 954-473-0372, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. or send an email to actofdavie1999@yahoo.com. community news Davie Denny’s Provides Special Needs Families with a Night Out

W

hen Stu Krane goes out to dinner with his family, he is used to stares and comments from other patrons in the restaurant. His sixteen year old daughter, Carly, is autistic and it is not unusual for her to create a commotion. Last month, he was able to enjoy dinner with his family at a Denny’s, 5645 S. University Drive, without worrying. The Davie restaurant dedicated a night to families with special needs children. Krane came up with the idea for the event when he and his wife, Marlane, learned of a similar event at a Baltimore restaurant. “Many of these families do not dine out,” said Krane. “They prefer to eat at home rather than endure the stress of people staring at them or asking them to control their children.” In April, Krane organized a “night out” at Davie’s Pizza Loft which was a huge success. More than 150 families attended the first-time event and they asked Krane to organize another one. Adam Jacobs, who owns several Denny’s restaurants, was eager to host the second “night out.” Since his son was diagnosed with lymphoma two years ago, he has become more sensitive to many of the issues families face when they have children with illnesses or disorders. “My son’s diagnosis changed my life in many ways,” said Jacobs. “I was happy to host the ‘night out’ and have the opportunity to help others.” Jacobs agreed to donate 20 percent of the revenue from the night to the Center for Autism Research and Development (CARD) in Davie. The event was dedicated to the Bennett family, who was attacked by a patron in a family restaurant when their four-year-old autistic son was misbehaving. On Sept. 27, the Denney’s restaurant was filled with more than 300 people. The kids had their faces painted and left with balloons, compliments of Bobby the Balloon Man. There were also raffles, with tickets to Marlin’s games, custom jewelry, mas-

sages and more. The event raised $1,126 for CARD. “The night was so special,” said Jacobs. “The kids were so happy to be in a comfortable and controlled environment where they could have fun without being judged. It was overwhelming to watch their faces. Many of them hugged me and thanked me for everything.” Krane says he is already planning another event. “We need to continue to educate the public about autism and other disabilities, so people will become more patient and courteous,” said Krane. “Every family has the right to dine out with friends and family without stress or stigma.” For information, call 954-802-1752 or send an email to k8788@aol.com.

School news Western High School Participates in Harvest Drive

E

ighteen years ago, Renee Herman initiated a canned food drive at Weston’s Country Isles Elementary to help 25 families in need. As the effort grew and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Davie’s Western High School. This year, her goal is to assist 1,500 families (approximately 6,000 individuals) in Broward County. As in past years, the theme of the Harvest Drive is “Children Helping Children.” Students from over 90 schools, churches and temples will conduct drives and supply the Harvest Drive with non-perishable food which is then distributed to the families. Western High School is one of eight high schools in Broward County that serve as distribution points and it continues to be the largest effort. Last year, the school helped 322 families and it is hoping for even more this year. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, receive an average of 15 bags of groceries. They will have an opportunity to enjoy a complete Thanksgiving dinner, including a turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They will also receive a week’s worth of groceries, with items like cereal, pancakes, canned vegetables, pasta, detergent, diapers and toilet paper. After they pick up their food, they can “shop” for clothing, shoes, books, bicycles and toys. “No child deserves to go hungry,” said Patti Bradley, who has been involved with the effort for 13 years. “We have to do our part to stamp out hunger.” Every club at Western High School gets involved in the Harvest Drive. The school kicked off the effort in October, requiring students to bring canned goods to attend their Homecoming Pep Rally. On Oct. 22 and 23, students collected food, gift cards

and donations in front of Publix, which they will do again this month. On Nov. 19th, from 3 to 9 p.m., the school’s gym will be open for the community to make donations. The students will begin the arduous process of sorting and packing the food. They will select appropriate groceries for each family, using a list that has the ages of each family member, but no names. On Nov. 23, the families will pick up their goods. “It is like Christmas on Thanksgiving,” said Bradley. The Harvest Drive provides an opportunity for children and adults to work handin-hand to offer needy families in Broward County gifts of food and other necessities during the Thanksgiving holidays and beyond. “It is important to teach children at an early age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others,” said Bradley. “They have a responsibility to help their fellow man.” More than 1,000 student volunteers understand this lesson. Many of the students, who have been helping since they were in kindergarten, come home from college to help. With difficult economic conditions and high unemployment rate in Florida, organizers recognize that hunger has become a year round issue. They are in the process of expanding the effort to provide assistance to families throughout the year with food and daily necessities. To volunteer or make a donation, visit the Western High School gym on Nov. 19, from 3 to 9 p.m. or Nov. 22. To identify a family in need of assistance, contact the school’s social worker for detailed information. For information on the Harvest Drive, visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com or send an email to pattizb@bellsouth.net.

4th Annual Sunset Walk/Run to Raise Awareness of Water Safety Photos by Wildside Online Inc.

E

very day, thousands of local residents and tourists enjoy South Florida’s beaches and waterways by participating in a variety of sporting and leisure activities. Unfortunately, boating and watercraft accidents have become a frequent occurrence, often resulting in personal injury or death. Many of these accidents could have been prevented with simple safety precautions. Lee Nossen understands all of this too well. On April 1, 2007, her son, Tyler Goldberg, was only 14 when he died as a result of injuries he sustained when his personal watercraft hit a dock at Markham Park. Hundreds will gather in his memory, at 4 p.m., on Sun., Nov. 21, at Markham Park, 16001 West State Road 84, to raise awareness of water safety during the 4th Annual Tyler Scott Goldberg Sunset 5K Run/Walk. Proceeds will benefit the Tyler Scott Goldberg Foundation. Nossen formed the Tyler Scott Goldberg Foundation to try to save other families from experiencing her pain. “Tyler could be anybody’s child,” said Nossen. “He was a good student, talented athlete, and well-rounded young man. He was not a risk taker. There have been so many accidents since Tyler’s that could have been prevented. We need to take action by raising the awareness about the importance of water safety. I cannot bear for another child to die. Somehow, we need to make something good out of something so horrible. ” The Foundation’s mission is to prevent children from suffering injuries arising from the operation of personal watercraft by serving as a vehicle for legislative change; a source of targeted education in our schools; and an advocate for personal watercraft design change. It also aims to ease the suffering of those whose lives are impacted

by the types of traumatic injuries typically associated with personal watercraft accidents. Members of the Foundation have been working to fulfill the mission through a variety of efforts. One of the group’s first projects was to supply the pediatric ICU unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital with more than 150 back packs, or survival kits, to be distributed to needy parents who are caring for their children for an extended period of time. Nossen spent more than two weeks in the pediatric unit with Tyler, before he passed away. She had friends and family that brought her everything she needed, but recalls being surrounded by so many families who were not as fortunate. The back packs contain a variety of necessities, including toiletries, blankets, pillows, books, snacks, gift cards to nearby Dunkin Donuts and much more. “We give the backpacks to families who receive that phone call, and must leave with nothing more than the shirt on their backs,” said Brittany Goldberg, Tyler’s sister. In addition, the Foundation is working with government officials to change Florida law so that the minimum age to independently operate a personal watercraft will be 16 instead of 14. They also want operators to be required to pass a practical test, in addition to the current written one. Foundation members are working with the Broward schools to educate students on water safety. They have also raised awareness of water safety in the community through a variety of organized activities like golf tournaments and walk/runs. For information about the event call 954- 474-4074 or send an email to goldcoastrunners@aol.com. For information on the Foundation, visit www.tylerscottgoldberg. com. Forget Viagra —Try Testosterone! By Dr. Jean Claude Nerette

F

or thousands of years men have sought ways to increase their stamina and sexual appetite. They have tried everything from ingesting testes from monkeys to the modern day usage of Viagra. Unfortunately, these methods are not long term solutions and cannot be substituted for your own body’s optimal testosterone levels. Optimal levels of testosterone improve your sex drive and stamina, but also strengthen your bones and muscles; decrease body fat; improve your thinking ability; boost energy levels; and help protect you against Alzheimer’s, dementia and heart disease. All testosterone is not created equal. The key to optimizing one’s testosterone level is to choose the best way of replacement that will not be harmful or shut down your own body’s natural production of testosterone. It is also important to have a constant delivery of hormone without high peaks and low’s. The testosterone which is created in an identical molecule to your own testosterone molecule is Bio-identical Testosterone. Bio-identical Testosterone is like your own body’s testosterone and will not shut down your own body’s production. Bio-identical Testosterone comes in different delivery methods: crèmes, gels and pellets. Bio-identical Testosterone Pellets are the only delivery method not associated with high peaks and lows of hormone delivery. The Bio-identical Testosterone Pellet is placed under the skin and releases a steady amount of Testosterone as the body needs it.

Take the Testosterone Challenge Quiz:

▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸

Do you have a decrease in sex drive (libido)? Do you lack energy? Do you have a decrease in strength or endurance? Have you noticed a decrease in the ability to concentrate? Have you noticed a decreased “enjoyment of life?” Are you sad and/or grumpy? Are your erections less strong? Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports? Are you gaining weight in your abdomen?

Q: Do I have low testosterone? A: Chances are you have low Testosterone if you answered yes to any of the questions

above. Q: How can I check my testosterone Level? A: A simple blood test can determine whether or not you have low testosterone. Q: How much and how often will I need treatment? A: The Bio-identical Testosterone Pellet therapy is individualized to your own body’s needs. The amount given is determined not only by your blood levels, but also by taking into account your body weight/frame, age and symptoms. It is specifically tailored to your needs – not everyone receives the same dosage. The doctor will determine the amount which is best for you to help you feel your best with the lowest dosage possible. The frequency of treatment is unique in pellets, only requiring treatment every 3-6 months.

Conclusion

If you want to get the zest back in your sex life and reap the benefits of increased muscle strength and tone, increased energy, mental clarity, decreased moodiness and the list goes on…What are you waiting for? Try Bio-Identical Pellet replacement therapy from a certified physician – specializing in Pellet therapy. Dr. Jean Claude Nerette is board certified in Internal Medicine and SottoPelle Bio-Identical Hormone Treatment. Dr. Nerette performs all treatments at his Medical Spa - Bellissimo Medical Spa & Salon. Bellissimo strikes the perfect balance between the clinical and the luxurious. Technology Improves Diagnostic and Treatment Options for Lung Cancer Patients

L

ung cancer results when abnormal cell growth invades and destroys normal lung tissue. An accumulation of abnormal cells is called a tumor. As a tumor grows, it can impair lung function, resulting in breathing difficulty and decreased oxygen in the blood. The cancer can also spread to other organs and eventually cause death. Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates 17,000 of the more than 215,000 new cases this year will be diagnosed in Florida. Most lung cancer cases occur in smokers (cigarette, pipe or cigar), however, some occur in non-smokers as well.

Symptoms of lung cancer vary, but may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Most lung cancers cause no symptoms until they are fairly large or advanced. Many patients will have lung nodules, spots on the lung. Most are not cancer but in certain circumstances they should be tested to see what they are. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, a highly specialized team of physicians cooperates to provide patients with coordinated diagnosis and treatment plans. The Interventional Pulmonology Program is one of the top interventional programs in the state of Florida through which our multidisciplinary team offers a full spectrum of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic services. One minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing lung cancer is called endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided biopsy, which allows physicians to more accurately identify lung cancers without surgery. “During the ultrasound guided biopsy, a flexible scope is inserted into the windpipe and pushed up along the walls until we access the appropriate airway, explains pulmonologist Eduardo Oliveira, MD, who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of lung cancer. “With the help of ultrasound imaging, we can locate the suspicious lymph node or spot on the lung and use a very small needle to biopsy the tissue. Tumors can also be diagnosed with CT scan guided needle biopsy. If necessary Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), also called thoracoscopy, can be used to biopsy nodules in the lung. Special telescopes, video cameras, and instruments are used to look and operate inside the chest through small incisions eliminating the need to cut muscle and spread ribs. This results in less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.

Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are used to treat lung cancer. Surgery involves removal of cancerous tissue, whereas radiation therapy involves destruction of cancer cells. In chemotherapy, a patient takes oral or intravenous drugs that target rapidly dividing or multiplying cancer cells throughout the body. Treating lung cancer can involve one or all of these interventions. If the cancer can be completely removed, surgery provides the best chance for cure. The VATS techniques described above also can be used to remove the tumor through very small incisions. For patients with tumors in major airways, a lung-sparing procedure called “sleeve lobectomy may be used. “In the past, the surgical alternative would have been to remove the entire lung, says Edward Savage, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon. “This procedure allows us to remove the tumor by removing the cancerous part of the lung while preserving the non-cancerous portion, minimizing the loss of breathing capacity.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s accredited Comprehensive Community Cancer Center is uniquely designed to offer comprehensive and compassionate cancer care, which often involves the cooperation of a variety of specialists, including oncologists, hematologists, radiologists and surgeons. A higher rate of survival and fewer complications in heart care. Why choose “much like Cleveland Clinic” when you can choose Cleveland Clinic?

Some area hospitals have advanced technology and robust research programs. And, much like Cleveland Clinic, some have even adopted a team approach to surgery. But we know it’s not just about having resources, it’s what you do with them. Independent studies* show that patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida have a higher rate of survival and a lower risk of complications in heart surgery than at other hospitals in the region. That’s the critical difference between “much like” Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic itself. It’s why we are the best choice for you and the people you love.

Every life deserves world class care.

cover story New Painless Laser Treats Venous Insufficiency — No Recovery. No Pain. By Susan Fox, DO, RPVI, FSVM

V

aricose veins are very prevalent in the United States. One out of two people over 50 have varicose veins. In one health survey, venous disease was found to be the seventh most common reason for medical referral in the United States. Venous disease is a spectrum of disease that ranges from spider veins to increasing degrees of venous insufficiency. Usually, the disease is limited to varicose veins and mild leg edema. However, with progressive degrees of venous insufficiency, the disease can manifest with increasing symptoms of leg pain, swelling, venous hemorrhage, venous eczema, lipodermatosclerosis (scarring) and venous ulcerations. It is important to notice venous insufficiency early in its course and treat appropriately Dr. Susan Fox specializes in the non-surgical before the patient develops one of these ulcers. treatment of varicose and spider veins using the state-of-the-art minimally invasive therapy for Patients with mild to moderate disease will large varicose veins and venous insufficiency. complain of restless leg syndrome, night cramps, heavy or tired legs at the end of the day or a burning or aching feeling in the legs. As the disease progresses, they will often have symptoms of increasing leg pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration, superficial ( phlebitis) blood clots or leg ulcers. With increasing insufficiency, patients develop increasing degrees of tissue damage and more symptoms.

Patients need very little local anesthetic and have almost no down time afterwards. Most people return to their normal activities later that day or the next. In the past, all that was available to treat varicose veins was vein stripping. Patients were admitted to the hospital and placed under general anesthesia to have the veins removed and tied off. Recovery was several weeks and there were a great number of complications and a very high rate of recurrence within just a few years. Since the late 1990s, minimally invasive procedures have been used to close varicose veins, limiting patient’s discomfort, recovery and recurrence compared with vein stripping. Endovenous laser was FDA approved in January of 2002 for the treatment of venous insufficiency of the greater saphenous vein. These lasers are placed inside of the vein and heat the blood and vein walls causing the vein to scar down and close shut. With the original lasers, it was difficult to limit the extent of tissue damage to just the vein wall and people tended to have a significant amount of post procedure pain and bruising. Newer lasers in longer wavelengths have higher water absorption. The 1470 wavelength laser more specifically targets collagen in the vein wall. Due to its specific absorption of water in the vein wall, the vein wall is heated and scarred shut. This limits the amount of damage outside of the vein. Patients treated with the 1470 laser have excellent results and virtually no post procedure pain or bruising. Treating the

entire vein takes less only a few minutes. Patients need very little local anesthetic and have almost no down time afterwards. Most people return to their normal activities later that day or the next. The 1470 laser is now available at Cardiovascular Consultants of South Florida. Dr. Susan Fox specializes in the non-surgical treatment of varicose and spider veins using the state-of-the-art minimally invasive therapy for large varicose veins and venous insufficiency. The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia using the Endoveneous Laser. Dr. Fox has been featured on several news programs, written articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. ur Creative Drama program is an improvisational process-centered form of art in which children are guided by a specially trained instructor to imagine, enact, and reflect upon human experiences. our focus is not primarily concerned with teaching drama skills, although this occurs of course, but to help children thru this art. the purpose of this creative drama program is LINA DELGADO that while they are learning technique we use BA in Theatre Education natural dramatic impulse to facilitate learning Currently working on an MS in Interdisciplinary in an unlimited number of fields and areas. Arts and Drama Therapy Children naturally act out their perceptions; try out roles, and play “pretend.” it is the primary way the young learn about their world. We structured the activities in the program so that students can explore topics experientially. Creative Drama can foster personality growth and self-esteem. it can help children learn to work together and to think creatively. it is a classic problem-solving exercise. it builds language, history, reading comprehension, memory, fine and gross motor skills, rhythm, coordination, as well as communication skills. the program promotes empathy by letting students step into others’ shoes. it has also benefited many children with behavioral problems like aDD and aDHD. thru my years of experience it has been really wonderful seeing children blossom thru this program. many times the mothers tell me how concern they are with their child because they are very shy or because they have a behavioral problem. my answer to them has always been “give them a chance in the program” and at the end of the sessions its very rewarding seeing the students performing in front of great audiences as they learned patience, discipline, confidence and more in a goal oriented arts curriculum.

Where Do I File for Divorce? By Evan Baron

I

often receive phone calls from individuals who wish to file for a Divorce or “Dissolution of Marriage,” but they have questions about their ability to file in Florida. Often, one of the participants resides in Florida and the other resides out of state. They ask, “What if there are minor children who reside elsewhere?” or “Can a court in Florida make rulings concerning children who reside elsewhere?” There is no one set answer to these questions. I will try to offer a basic summary of venue and jurisdiction for dissolution cases. Venue deals with the question: “In which county should the Dissolution of Marriage be filed?” What if the parties were previously residing in Broward County when they lived together, but after separation the Husband moved to Palm Beach County? For convenience sake, the Husband will probably want to file close to home, which would be Palm Beach. Technically a Dissolution of Marriage can be filed in any county in Florida. However, the proper county would be the county where the parties last lived together as man and wife, which in my hypothetical would be Broward County.

“If one of the participants lives in another state does a Florida Court have jurisdiction?” The answer to that depends on several factors. The first thing a party must prove is his/her residency in this state for at least 6 months prior to the filing of the dissolution action. If either party resided in this state for the required 6 months the Court would have jurisdiction. However, the court may only be able to dissolve the marriage and not rule on any substantive issues such as child support, alimony or equitable distribution of property. If the parties resided in Florida and one of the parties moved away, the Court will be able to take jurisdiction over all issues. If the parties were living as husband and wife in another state and the Wife moved to Florida without her Husband, than the answer would be different. In this scenario the Wife could file for Dissolution after living here for 6 months, but because the Husband never lived here, she could only end the marriage and not address all other issues. She would have to file additional proceedings in the state where they lived together. Issues concerning minor children can only be addressed after the minor children reside here for six months, as well. After this period of time, Florida would be considered the minor child’s home state. That does not, however, give the Court jurisdiction to necessarily entertain child support issues if one of the parents never resided in Florida. I know this can be quite confusing. If you have issues that seem to relate to any of these scenarios, I suggest you contact my office at 954 385-9160 to discuss them further.

Look Younger with Laser Skin Tightening By Gilma Albarrachin, Laser Center & Med Spa

L

aser skin tightening is a minimally invasive way to regain smooth, youthful skin. It offers patients a valuable way to obtain permanent results with no downtime. Skin tightening is an increasingly popular procedure that has proven effective in reducing damage from age and external forces. Laser skin tightening helps patients to look and feel younger by stimulating collagen regeneration under the surface of the skin. Wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth, and on the neck and body fade away as new collagen fills in the skin’s surface blemishes. There are no incisions or injections and, since the laser system cools the upper layers of skin while heating collagen down below, patients experience minimal discomfort. Patients generally notice immediate results following a laser skin tightening session, and further tightening is achieved over the next several months as new collagen grows. Depending on the areas being treated, most patients require more than one skin tightening treatment to achieve maximum results, but the effects are permanent. Unlike having a face lift, laser skin tightening does not stretch the skin – it causes skin to tighten on its own. And, there is no downtime and little chance of side effects involved with skin tightening.

There are few risks associated with laser skin tightening. Because it does not involve any surgical incisions, laser skin tightening is a considerably safer method for achieving younger-looking skin than face lift procedures, and it is less costly as well. How does laser skin tightening work? Firstly, the laser frequency waves are applied over the skin that is to be treated. This frequency is designed to wave through the middle layer of the skin, known as the dermis. Basically this wave is a therapeutic heat that treats the support and framework of the skin (collagen and the elastin fibers). This heating effect provokes a contraction of the aged and disorganized collagen fibers while also stimulating the fibroblasts to begin to re-grow new collagen. To put it more visually, the frequencies will heat up the water content within the skin, which then will cause a uniformed heating effect in the area that is to be treated. This process, also known as the collagen remodeling, results in much firmer and smoother skin. During this treatment, to protect the health of the skin, a cooling system keeps the surface layer of the skin (also known as the epidermis) cool. Usually, the process takes up to one hour. The best part of laser skin tightening technology is that it is extremely comfortable. Also, unlike many other modern skin treatments, the laser skin tightening frequency does not require any anesthesia. In addition, no recovery time is required. This allows the client to get back to his/her daily life straightaway. Laser Center & Med Spa is a full-service medical aesthetic center and day spa. It offers an extensive menu of treatment options ranging from anti-aging treatments to skin and body rejuvenation, as well as laser hair removal and tanning. Laser Center & Med Spa is located at 1916 Weston Road. Call (954) 888-9525 to schedule a consultation or appointment. For more information visit www.lasercentermedspa.com.

Can You Cure Autism with Diet and Vitamins? By Brian Udell

S

o, can you cure autism with diet and vitamins? Absolutely not! Though I often get this question (preceded by a heavy sigh) from the “traditional” scientific community when I try to explain how complementary and alternative medicine approaches this new childhood epidemic. Practitioners do listen to the family, observe and test patients in order to diagnose states of dis-ease in an attempt to correct abnormalities that can be corrected and make the patient as healthy as possible. This is an important paradigm shift – that Autism Spectrum Disorder is a whole body disorder, not a psychiatric one. While this may not be the popular position to take, it represents real hope for millions of families that their child may have correctable conditions which will ultimately enhance their ability to recover and to progress in all areas of their life.

What are the most common findings in children with developmental delays? After eliminating other and known causes of behavioral conditions, the two most common areas where children exhibit co-morbid conditions are in the gut and in their overactive immune systems. Now, for those of you who don’t see how there is a relationship between our intestines and our brain, I ask “how well do you concentrate after you have had a rotten meal?” Are you ready to learn a new task? Are you chipper and fun? Or do you tend to be grouchy with a short attention span and just want to crawl up into a ball in the corner of the room (sound like anyone that you know)? And furthermore, for those who believe that “immune” only refers to “itching” or “rashes”, I would remind you that asthma is an autoimmune disease that affects breathing; lupus is an autoimmune disorder which affects connective tissue; and rheumatoid arthritis is when your body reacts against your joints, causing swelling and eventually destruction of tissue. These are just a few of the many autoimmune diseases which are increasing to epidemic levels. Today’s youngsters represent the “canary in the coalmine,” exposed to over 85,000 chemicals in the air, food and water – contaminants which only came into being in this century. We have woefully little information about how even one of these new agents affect developing humans, so imagine the dearth of information about 1000’s of contaminants, plus the unknown knowledge about what havoc might ensue with the interaction of such a myriad of new materials. Once this first goal of getting the child healthy is underway, therapies such as Occupational, Physical, Speech and Language, Applied Behavioral, hippo-therapy (horses), aqua-therapy, dolphin therapy, neuro-feedback, sensory integration and hearing therapies (among others) become that much more effective for the newly-awakened synapses that are starving for input. Once the patient is awake and aware, recovery can begin and the possibilities for improvement are, literally, unknown. So, can you cure autism with diet and vitamins? It’s a start! Brian D. Udell, MD is a Board Certified Neonatologist and Pediatrician who has been practicing medicine for over 35 years. He is presently practicing Developmental Medicine in Weston, FL. How You Can Tell If You Have Been a Victim of Predatory Lending Practices By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense Attorney

Predatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are contained in a mortgage loan transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that transaction usually reveals serious violations of federal and state lending laws.

Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007.

This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without any past credit history, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for all the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.

Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature.

These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. These loans have the highest delinquency rate of any other loan product.

Mortgage loan suffers from negative amortization.

Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan, than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.

Mortgage Loan is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment.

Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan or some other minimal payment that does not even cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding balance. Once the loan payment is increased, so does the likelihood the borrower will default, and eventually be subjected to foreclosure.

Mortgage Loan Approval Based Only on Stated Income.

Roughly half of all sub-prime borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If any of these factors apply to your current loan, you should at least have a professional forensic audit performed to find out whether you have any viable claims against your lender. If your claims are timely raised, you may be entitled to reduce the amount you owe, or cancel the loan obligation altogether. A more detailed explanation of these factors, as well as key foreclosure defense strategies, is discussed during a live seminar offered by the Arcia Law Firm once a month. During the Sat. seminar, you can also receive a free preliminary analysis of your loan documents by experienced forensic auditors that will be on site. To find out more about upcoming seminars times and dates, and to register, you can visit www.arcialawfirm.com/seminar or www.arcialawfirm.com/seminario for the Spanish version. When registering, mention you heard about this seminar through this magazine and you will receive two complimentary admission tickets. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to defend dozens of homeowners in our community in foreclosure cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure, please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com.

D

avie’s Slender Fit U is helping clients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods and keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Clients follow a very specific low calorie diet that is made up of real food, proteins, fruits and vegetables. They also use a tiny dose of hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), a natural complex amino-peptide protein found in both men and women. The hCG helps their bodies break down its “abnormal” fat storage and sculpts it while Geri Correa, founder and program director of Slender Fit U, lost 25 pounds on the diet and is now helping clients achieve they lose weight. Clients keep their desired lean muscle mass, and only lose the unsightly fat. As a result, they lose not only pounds but an equal amount of inches. They are also able to maintain a low calorie diet without suffering headaches, irritability or weakness, which are so commonly seen during most other weight loss diets or programs. “Every pound you lose on the Slender Fit U program is equal to almost three pounds of regular weight,” said Geri Correa, Slender Fit U’s founder and program director. “Because hCG is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. It is virtually 100 percent effective for everyone.” Although the use of hCG in a weight loss program has been receiving a great

In fact, many refer to Geri as the “hCG Guru.” She has been involved with the diet since it became popular in South Florida a few years ago. She lost 25 pounds on the diet and it changed her life. She has put thousands of people on the program who have experienced similar results. They range in age from 12 to 80. “The diet helped me regain the same youthful shape I had in my 20’s,” said Geri. “I love my job because I have helped so many clients change their lives. They are absolutely amazed at the spectacular results. My Slender Fit U program really works!” Geri personally guides each of her clients every step of the way and gives them the tools they need to stick with the program. She works directly with Slender Fit U’s Medical Director, Dr. Peter Babinski, to monitor every client’s medical progress throughout the program. After losing 20 to 30 pounds, many people find they no longer need to take their blood pressure or diabetes medication. The weight loss has provided them with a healthier body that no longer requires medication. Geri has built her reputation on doing what works and the results speak for themselves. Amazingly, 90% of her clients do not gain any weight back after successfully completing the Slender Fit U program. Luis lost 35 pounds and 20 inches in 43 days. “I was very skeptical at the beginning,” said Luis. “I’ve have done many diets in the past with very little success. After I started the diet and I started losing so much weight I was so excited. I was never hungry. I was very satisfied with my meals and I also felt great during the program. I found it very easy to do and I would recommend this program to anyone that is looking forward to losing weight doing something healthy, natural and easy. It turns out this was the best money I ever spent!” Jeannie lost 29 pounds and 23 inches in 43 days. “Before Slender Fit U, I hated getting on a scale,” said Jeannie. “It was the most depressing part of the day. Now I can’t wait to jump on. I cannot believe the amount of weight I have lost. You can see and feel the results within the first 3 days. My stomach is disappearing!” Slender Fit U is very affordable. Clients can chose from two programs, depending on the amount of weight they want to lose. In the 23 day program, women can expect to lose 10 to 15 pounds and men will lose 20 to 25 pounds. In the 43 day program, women will lose 20 to 30 pounds and a man will lose 30 to 40 pounds. The cost ranges from $350 to $600. Slender Fit U is located at 12525 Orange Dr., Suite 701, in Davie. November 2010

ccording to the LIFE Foundation, 93% of Americas say that life insurance is something most people need. However, most individuals rarely act on their intentions because of the perceived complexity behind purchasing life insurance. “Buying life insurance is challenging even for those who are highly motivated to do so,” says Julius Pappas, Financial Services Representative, with MetLife. “Of those people who say they will buy life insurance, many may not take that step.” For those who are interested in purchasing life insurance but don’t know how to begin, below are ten simple tips to get started: 1. If you have children or people who depend on the money you earn, you need life insurance. Its primary purpose is to protect your income. Life insurance helps those you care about keep their standard of living as they would if you were still earning a paycheck. 2. Basically, life insurance replaces your paycheck if you aren’t there to earn it. Sixty percent of annual income times years to retirement is a quick way to estimate how much money that means over your working life. 3. Some life insurance is better than no life insurance. A good starting place is coverage equal to outstanding debt plus five years of salary. Outstanding debt could include mortgage, car payments and student loans. 4. Life insurance is less expensive than you think. A healthy 35-year-old may pay as little as $30 a month for $500,000 of term coverage. Since life insurance does get more expensive as you get older, it may make sense to buy as much coverage as you need while you’re young and healthy. 5. Life insurance is a smart financial move. Spending one percent of your annual salary protects years of income. To get the amount of coverage MetLife recommends, you can expect to pay about one percent of your annual salary for the annual cost of term life insurance. 6. Make sure you know how much life insurance you get at work. Buy additional coverage – through work or with a personal policy – to meet your unique needs. 7. Life insurance needs change over time because of life events such as a new family member, a new job, a move or even a pay raise at work. Review your coverage annually. 8. If you don’t have life insurance, term insurance is an easy and inexpensive way to get started. Because term life insurance runs out at the end of the term, use it to protect needs that you can anticipate such as paying off a mortgage or funding college for your children. Permanent life insurance may also be an appropriate component of your lifetime financial plan. 9. Life insurance is a promise. The financial strength and reputation of the company you buy it from matters. Ask around and do some research before you buy. 10. There is no substitute for good advice. The more you know about life insurance basics, the more control you have over deciding what’s right for you. To find out how much life insurance is right for you if you want death benefit protection and living benefits, or to leave a financial legacy, you need to talk to a professional.

Fitness Forum Do Toning Sneakers or Sandals Work? By Ellen Latham

T

he American Council on Exercise (ACE) Research released the findings from an independent research study on the effectiveness of popular toning shoes. The study, one of the first from an independent organization, enlisted a team of researchers from the Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin and found no evidence to suggest that the shoes help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories or improve muscle strength and tone. Toning shoes appear to promise a quick and easy fitness solution. Unfortunately, people are always looking for the quick fix. According to the study, these shoes do not deliver the benefits they are claiming. There was simply no evidence that indicates that the toning shoes offer any enhanced fitness benefits over traditional sneakers, despite studies cited by manufacturers that seem to prove the effectiveness of the toning shoes. Now let’s discuss what works, which is increasing your workload in your exercise progressively. For example, if you walk around the block a few times after dinner, try walking at a certain pace half way and then increase your pace the remainder. Keep doing that for a few laps. If you use your treadmill

in front of your television, then pace for a quarter of a mile and then run for a quarter of a mile. Continue this until you complete a few miles. The more muscle you activate the more calories you burn. The faster you go, the more muscle you will activate. This will get you into great shape and will also burn a ton more calories. All of the cardio classes at Ellen’s Ultimate Workout are based on this pace and push premise. That is why the results are so dramatic in so many of the clients. If you combine that type of cardio with multi-joint weight training (which is what our Ultimate Workout classes do), then you will burn the most calories you can within an hour. That is better than any pair of sneakers could ever offer you. Someone who is interested in getting into great shape needs to be doing cardio training 2 to 3 times a week. If they are looking for weight loss, 4 to 5 times a week is the formula. Ellen owns Ellen’s Ultimate Workout Studio, 5173 S. University Dr. in Davie. The Studio specializes in Pilates on the Reformer, Ultimate Workout, Spinning, Ballet Barre, 9 to 15 year old Ultimates and Yoga. The first class is free. Call 954-472-9440 or visit www.
