Wishing You a Happy New Year!

A

s the holiday season comes to a close and

we return to our daily work routines, the Happy New Year toasts slowly fade away. We are trying to recover from all the festivities of the season, the get-togethers with friends and families, and the holiday feasts. Now we wonder what the year 2014 has in store for us. On behalf of my staff, I am happy to announce that we are once again growing our family of publications. Starting in March, we will be expanding our local community new magazines to reach an additional 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Sunrise. The new Sunrise Town Times will provide our readers with truly local school and community news while allowing local and regional businesses to reach the residents of that community. While we are making resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, and to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can achieve. Have a Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Weston and the Town Times magazines. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Davie Residents to Celebrate Martin Luther King Day By Debby Teich

E

ach year , on the third

Monday of January, the nation celebrates the birth, life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It remembers the injustices that Dr. King fought for in his quest for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. On January 19, Davie residents will have an opportunity to honor his dreams and vision during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Picnic Celebration at Potters Park, from 1 to 4 p.m. Hundreds are expected to attend the celebration, which will include a bounce house, petting farm, entertainment by local school groups and organizations, free lunch (while supplies last) and more. The Town of Davie has sponsored the free event for more than 20 years. The winners of the Town of Davie’s MLK poem contest will also be announced at the picnic. The Town Mayor and Town Council members will award Rosettes for the best poems in each overall grade level from participating schools and groups. All entries submitted will receive a participation ribbon.

Anyone who enters a poem will have an opportunity to read it aloud at the picnic. The annual contest educates and informs students of the lifetime achievements of the great Nobel Peace Prize-winning American. All schools and non-profit groups in Broward County are invited to participate. Entries can include any type of poem, from haiku to sonnet. They should reflect Dr. King’s dreams and vision. The deadline to submit poems to the Davie Town Hall Special Events Department is January 16. “Martin Luther King was an extraordinary man,” said Beverly White, who attends the picnic every year. “He stood for peace, justice, tolerance and so much more. His message is still very relevant in today’s world.” Potters Park is located at 4300 SW 57th Terrace, in Davie. For information or to download an application, visit www.davie-fl.gov, send an email to matthew_mlodzinski@davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1166.

The book took approximately one year to complete. “There are not many children’s books that depict children of diverse backgrounds,” said Lynn. “We wanted to create a book that promoted diversity, so the readers can more easily connect to the story and their heritage.” Lynn used Create Space to self-publish the book. The book’s website, www.guesswhodinosaur.com, contains a link to Amazon, where it sells for $7.99. All of the profits will be used to help pay for Chris’ college. Chris has already had book signings at his school and church. He also plans to use the book to make a difference in the community. He will be setting up book signings and readings at organizations that promote childhood literacy. When Chris is not involved with his book, he enjoys playing with his friends, reading, horseback riding and playing basketball. Although his career aspirations change frequently, he is currently deciding between a doctor, pharmacist and grocery store clerk. He is already working on his next book.

Isaiah Penn Smith is quickly becoming a dinosaur expert among his peers. With some help from his family, the Cooper City resident recently self-published his first children’s book, "Guess Who, Mr. Dinosaur?" He has been using the book to encourage childhood literacy. “Chris loves to read,” said Lynn Smith, his mother. “Reading and writing is so important and we want to help other kids develop a love of both. This book will help us achieve our goal.” Since Chris has always loved dinosaurs, it was a natural topic to select. The book compares seven different dinosaurs to animals that have similar qualities. Chris came up with all of the comparisons. For example, a brachiosaurus and a giraffe both have long necks; a triceratops and rhinoceros both have horns on their faces; and a parasaurolophus and a duck both have duck-billed shaped mouths. At the end of the book, readers can use their creativity to color a brachiosaurus. They can also play Dino Match-up, by matching similar animals and dinosaurs and writing each of their names. Once the book was written, the next step was to have it illustrated. The settings are some of Chris’ favorite places, such as a museum, park, classroom and the beach. All of the characters come from diverse backgrounds. Many of them intentionally bear a close resem-

Actors Community Theatre Presents En Avant! An Evening with Tennessee Williams By Debby Teich

T

his month , Davie residents can experience

live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present En Avant! An Evening with Tennessee Williams, written and performed by William Shuman. Performances will be held on January 17 and 18. During the 75 minute, one-man show, Shuman presents a highly personal impression of the man he believes to be the single greatest American playwright. “Tennessee Williams changed the face of American theater,” said Shuman. “He was one of the most prolific writers we have.” According to Shuman, Tennessee Williams wrote more than 40 full length plays and over 50 one act plays. He also published 53 short stories, 2 volumes of poetry, a book of essays, 2 novels, and at least one original screenplay. Shuman says that Tennessee had hundreds of sexual encounters, but only loved three men. The one he yearned for all his life left him after less than a month to marry a woman. “The show deals with the family, loves, work (with emphasis on the early plays) and demons of this admittedly ‘wounded’ man,” said Shuman. Shuman began writing the play in 2010, while working with teacher/director Austin Pendleton. Like Tennessee,

he kept revising it as he learned more about him. While in New York City, he connected with professor Ruis Woertendyke, who directed the current version. It was first performed at Andrews Living Arts in Ft. Lauderdale in November 2011, under the direction of Robert Nation. Since then, it has been seen at many different theaters and festivals. This summer it was performed at the 2013 NYC International Fringe Festival, where it received the Overall Excellence Award for Solo Performance. “The show got rave reviews,” said Barry Katz, producer and co-founder of ACT. “We are excited to have it at our community theater.” Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater. It all started when the Davie Town Council requested that an ad appear in the Town’s local paper asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first community theatre. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. All ACT productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Shows are on January 17 at 8pm, and January 18 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $12 at the door and $10 in advance. For information, call 954-473-0372, send an email to actofdavie1999@yahoo.com or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Sea Dragons Club Offers Mountain Biking for Kids By Debby Teich

M

ountain biking is a great way to explore the outside , exer -

cise and have fun. All you need is a bike, helmet and pads, as well as a tremendous amount of endurance, core strength, balance and bike handling skills. The sport can be performed almost anywhere, from a backyard to a dirt road. The Sea Dragons Club offers mountain biking classes for kids, ages 8-15. The next six-week session begins January 12. “Mountain biking is a great sport and not all kids have the opportunity to try it,” said Maria Supik, Sea Dragons founder and coach. “If their parents do not moun-

tain bike, chances are they don’t either. The club offers kids a way to experience the sport safely.” The Sea Dragons club offers beginner and intermediate/advanced classes during the season, which runs from October to February. The kids meet at Amelia Earhart Park and Markham Park to work on bike handling, strength, conditioning and agility. Classes are limited to 12 members. “They build their self-confidence both on and off the bike, while having fun and staying fit,” said Supik. “We have some great trails in South Florida with paths that range from easy to very challenging. The club takes the kids away from their electronics to spend two hours outside in nature.” Some of the kids in club also participate in local mountain bike races. In January, there are races at Amelia Earhart Park and Markham Park. “Although mountain biking is an individual sport, the kids still feel part of a team,” said Supik. “The kids in the club encourage each other to push harder in a positive way.” In April, the Sea Dragons will begin training for triathlons by practicing their biking, running and swimming skills. Last year, members competed in local races, Ironkids, regional and national youth triathlons. Most of the races feature the familiar swim-bike-run format, but the distances are much shorter than in adult races. “Kids do not have to be super athletes to participate in a triathlon.” said Maria. “If they can run, bike and swim, they can enter. Since there are three very different activities, they don’t get bored. These are also three sports that most kids do well.” For information, call 786-553-2763, visit www.southfloridaseadragons.com, or send an email to sfseadragons@hotmail.com.

New Year's Resolution: Thicker, Fuller, Natural Looking Hair Can Be Achieved By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

I

s hair loss affecting you ? You 're not alone! I n

fact, nearly one in three people by age 30 have significant hair thinning or loss, and with age this number increases significantly. Hair loss can be detrimental to one's self-esteem and confidence. It can drastically change the way you perceive yourself and affect the way others react to you. The good news is…there are solutions. Many products occupy the market for hair loss treatments; however, most are not permanent solutions and can be costly over time - not to mention possible side effects. A permanent solution to obtain thicker, fuller, natural looking hair is by using a procedure known as the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

▸▸ What is FUE? The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a unique FDA approved technique. It is minimally invasive, eliminating the use of scalpels, staples and anesthesia. It simply harvests individual hair follicles from the back of the head where hair growth is dominant. It is then carefully re-implanted into the balding or thinning targeted areas, providing a natural re-distribution of hair.

no slit, no scars, no pain. The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a unique FDA approved technique, minimally invasive, eliminating the use of scalpels, staples and anesthesia. It simply harvests individual hair follicles from the back of the head where hair growth is dominant to be carefully reimplanted into the balding or thinning targeted areas, providing a natural redistribution. The hair transplant is a single day, outpatient procedure performed with the patient fully awake.

▸▸ How does the FUE differ from other hair transplantation? The FUE method is an advanced hair transplant method that harvests individual follicles from the donor area without the use of scalpels or stitches, which means there is no linear scar. Other methods of hair transplantation use a linear incision in the back of the head to harvest the donor hairs. This method tends to be painful, has a longer healing time, and leaves a telltale scar if the client wears his/her hair short. Using the FUE method, there are no scars and no incision. As a result, healing is quicker. ▸▸ How long does it take? The hair transplant using the FUE is done in a single day. It is an outpatient procedure performed when the client is fully awake. The client is medicated so he/ she feels no pain. Clients can expect to return to normal activity as quick as the next day. ▸▸ Is the FUE suitable for both men and women? Yes. Because the FUE is a minimally invasive procedure, it is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own hair with transplantation. Are you ready to take the next step to achieve a permanent solution and grow thicker, fuller, natural looking hair? To determine if you are a candidate for hair transplantation using the FUE method, call Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette Jr., D.O. for your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Functional Medicine, Hair Loss &Transplantation, IV Nutrition Therapy and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair Is a Success By Debby Teich

O

ver 1,000 Davie residents gathered

last month to enjoy fun, food and festivities at the 14th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair. Joan and Ken Steinmetz chaired the event, while former Miami Dolphins players Sean Hill and Chris Conlin served as the parade’s Grand Marshals. Friends and neighbors created floats by decorating cars, boats, bicycles, scooters and even dogs. They threw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that lined the streets. Some of this year’s VIPs included Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilwoman Susan Starkey, Miami Shriners, Forest Ridge Women’s Club, Davie Community Emergency Response Team, Everglades High School Marching Band, Everglades High School ROTC and Sea Cadets,

local beauty queens, Puppet Network’s Joplin and Bowie, the Grinch, Santa and more. The parade also sponsored a food drive with the Hope Outreach Center. Pure Dynamics Dance Studio won for Best Float. Some of the other winners included: Best Use of Theme: Forest Ridge Women’s Club, Best Mini Float: Bella’s Hair; and Best Marching Entry: Gloria Day Drumline. After the parade several hundred neighbors and their families moved to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair. They enjoyed refreshments, hot dogs, baked goods, crafters, professional photos with Santa, inflatables, face painting, balloon twisting, games, arts and crafts, raffles, men’s frozen t-shirt contest, finger printing lab for kids, and more.

There were also live stage performances by South Florida Cloggers, Forest Ridge Women’s Club, Pure Dynamics Dance Studio, Ava Tracht Singers, St. David’s Choir, St. David’s Cheerleaders, the Enjoyous Band, and many more. Lorraine Hofheinz has been on the committee since the event’s inception. She coordinated and rode on the first Lords & Ladies float 14 years ago with her son and his closest friends, and still remembers it well. She says that the event requires a lot of preparation, but it is well worth it. “I can’t imagine another community with the camaraderie I’ve found in Forest Ridge,” said Hofheinz. Chiropractic? Why Not?

“A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward” Dear Friend,

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the bottom. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save… studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar someone for your health care expenses, you

may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 01/31/14) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications… I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Hawks Bluff Students Help Break World Record for Speed Stacking By Debby Teich

O

n N ovember 14, G uinness World R ecords

Day, students at Hawks Bluff participated in the worldwide effort to break last year’s Guinness record for "Most People Speed Stacking at Different Locations on the Same Day." The goal of the sanctioned sport is to stack specialized plastic cups in specific sequences in as little time as possible. More than 2,800 schools and organizations, representing 36 countries from around the world participated in the event. The World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) wanted to have 500,000 people stacking and they exceeded their goal. Jonathan Gil and Suzanne Jacobsen organized the Hawks Bluff event, which was held during After Care. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade volunteered for 30-minute shifts, so they could be counted as

official participants. “Some focused on the basics of cup stacking, while others kicked it up a notch and ran cup stacking relays,” said Diana J. Bartnett, BASCC Supervisor. The WSSA promotes the standardization and advancement of sport stacking worldwide. This association serves as the governing body for sport stacking rules and regulations and provides a uniform framework for sport stacking events; sanctions sport stacking competitions and records. Welcome in the New Year with Realistic Wellness Goals for Long-Term Success Many people ring in the New Year with a vow to live a healthier lifestyle and improve their overall health and well-being. Athletic facilities become crowded with over zealous individuals determined to shed unwanted pounds by eating healthier, exercising, eliminating bad habits and reducing stress. By March, attendance at these facilities is once again back to normal levels and many people return to their sedentary lifestyle. The reason – the goals they set seem insurmountable, they don’t plan properly to maintain this new lifestyle, and they give up when results are not immediate. With just a few changes in your daily routine, you can improve your health tremendously. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist, David Wolinsky, MD offers the information below for consideration when trying to improve your overall wellness. To bring about real change people should alter the way they set goals for themselves. For most people, weight gain is gradual and they add pounds slowly over a number of months or years. However, when they make the decision to lose weight, they set high weight loss goals and expect immediate results from dieting and exercise. A more sensible approach is to set weight loss goals in realistic increments. What is a realistic increment? Two to three pounds per week. Use other parameters to assess fat loss because muscle gain may offset fat loss on the scale. How do your clothes fit? Can you take your belt in a notch? A person wishing to lose more than 50 pounds should aspire to lose 10 pounds at a time. When the first 10 pounds are lost, they can then set a goal to lose another 10. And, someone who wants to lose 10 pounds, should set a goal to lose one pound at a time until they reach their goal.

Likewise, a person beginning an exercise program should not try to use all the equipment their first day in the gym or try to run a marathon when they lace up their running shoes for the first time. Instead, they should consult with employees at the exercise facility to find out which machines will facilitate their David Wolinsky, MD exercise goals and spend a few Cleveland Clinic Florida, minutes on those machines each Cardiologist time. Over time, as they build their endurance, they can increase the time on each machine and add more machines to their exercise regiment. And, the beginning runner can train for the marathon by running a half mile at a time. Make sure your routines combine aerobic conditioning and weight training. Avoid the mirror muscle syndrome (pecs and biceps only), and make sure your routine exercises all your muscles, especially your core (abdomen and back). Schedule your exercise time like you schedule the rest of your day. Finally, determine the best way to manage the stress in your life in order to achieve better health. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing and walking the dog are all activities that have been known to reduce stress. Find an activity that you enjoy and take a mental time out while you do that activity. Here’s to achieving optimal health.

This is encouraging for all of us. Take a look at 2013: Davie: There are currently 215 single-family homes listed for sale. Fourteen of those listings are short sales and twelve are foreclosures. The highest priced home is listed over $7.495 Million. Of the 584 closed sales in 2013, 177 buyers paid cash. Cooper City: There are currently 73 single-family homes for sale. Seven of those listings are short sales and six are foreclosures. The highest priced home is listed for $969,000. Of the 347 closed sales in 2013, 100 buyers paid cash. What about the luxury market? In our South Florida marketplace, luxury homes are defined with a million-dollar price tag. Of the 485 homes sold in Davie this year, 27 were priced over $1 million and six of those homes were purchased with cash. There are currently 52 homes in Davie priced over $1 million. Because of EWM International’s multiple luxury affiliations, I can best market your home locally, nationally and internationally. All properties priced over $250K are fed to Mayfair International Realty’s international website: www.mayfairinternationalrealty.com and www.telegraph. co.uk. All properties priced at $1 million + are fed to www.countrylife.co.uk (the Queen’s Magazine online). More good news – according to the latest NAR Report, Florida remains the leading state regarding foreign buyers. The breakdown of nationalities buying in Florida is as follows: Canada 23%; China 12% and Mexico 8%.EWM is an exclusive affiliate of Christie’s Great Estates. (www.ChristiesGreatEstates.com). EWM is also a member and principal owner of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. As a result, EWM is a charter member of Luxury Portfolio, a Fine Property Collection. The companies that make up Luxury Portfolio represent more million-dollar-plus transactions than any other single real estate organization. (www.luxuryportfolio.com) Luxury Portfolio represents 500 firms, 4,000 offices with over 120,000 professional sales associates worldwide, of which, EWM is proud to be a member and principal owner! We are also members of Who’s Who in Luxury Marketing. This clearly demonstrates that EWM properties get MULTIPLE LUXURY exposure – Countrylife.co.uk, Luxury Portfolio, Christie’s Great Estates and LuxuryRealEstate. com. section Ask the Expert

A Edit Whiter Headline Brighter Smile By Dr. Maria Grosman

A

s I sit down to write this article , I am trying

out a new tooth whitening product, which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf, and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children, as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient, which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12, this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised, because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Road, on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. day with much historical significance. I find it hard to believe that 50 years have passed since a young 4th grader was informed by his teacher that the President of the United States had been shot and we were all sent home. How can 50 years go by so quickly? How can the world change so quickly? In my practice, I have seen people spend years and thousands of dollars fighting over issues which often are really not worth fighting over. If we stop to think and realize how precious our time is, perhaps we can avoid petty disagreements. In spite of the fact that I make my living in representing individuals involved in this pettiness, I can assure you that I do my best to focus on what is important. Sometimes I am successful in this endeavor and sometimes I am not.

I want to extend my thanks to you and the entire College Experts staff for helping me achieve what I could have only dreamed of before starting your SAT classes. …. I am proud to report that not only have I achieved my goal, I passed it by more that 150 points, ending with a 2270….with this score, my outlook for colleges is much broader than it was before I took the test. – Gabe C. 5400 S. With the beginning of a New Year right around the corner, perhaps a worthwhile resolution would simply be to stop the pettiness. Nobody anticipates getting divorced, but unfortunately it is a reality in many marriages. So if a divorce is either pending or about to begin, or issues have from a previous divorce have arisen, think about what is important in your life, as well as your children’s lives. Focus on the big picture and not the mini battles. Many couples will not agree to a time sharing schedule. Sometimes the reason for not agreeing is valid, often times it is not. What every child needs is the love of both parents. This doesn’t always have to equate to equal time with both parents. I have had individuals refuse to settle a case and continue to litigate over one or two days a month with a child. Instead of a 50/50 time sharing schedule, it becomes a 48% to 52%. Logically it would seem that a compromise can be reached with these facts. Often times it is in reality a power struggle and nobody wishes to give in. The interests of the children remain secondary. You must ask yourself if the extra day is worth the battle. Personal property can also result in petty disputes. Unless the items in question have either sentimental value or significant value because they are rare, most items are easily replaced. I can never understand couples who spend significant attorney’s fees to litigate over items that have less value than the fees they are paying, but couples routinely do. I am not suggesting that all disputes that occur in the process of a divorce are in fact petty. More often than not the issues to be litigated are of major significance to the parties or the minor children. When issues like these cannot be resolved, then the Judge will be asked to decide. Hopefully the next time an issue arises either during a divorce or after the divorce is final, the parties can simply ask themselves if they are being petty and how can they make better use of their time. Rotator Cuff Repair

Arthroscopic surgery is indicated when the patient is unresponsive to conservative management protocol and has an MRI scan with findings consistent with a rotator cuff tear. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. The rehabilitation of this type of surgery is divided into a healing phase followed by a regain motion phase and strengthening phase under the supervision of a trained, licensed physical therapist. Most patients can return to unrestricted sports activities in about three to six months. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901. Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less Than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

M

ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bank-

ruptcy in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt (credit cards, medical debt, etc.) is wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. In fact, your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home during a Chapter 7 bankruptcy with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the market value of the home. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. Over a period of 3-5 years, a Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, credit card and other unsecured debt negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, reduced student loan payments, IRS liens, reduced car payments. Even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties. In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed for the first mortgage on your principal residence must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis, instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Ask the Sheriff

Accomplishments - Looking Back, Looking Ahead By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

A

s we begin 2014, we reflect upon some of the

achievements of the Broward Sheriff’s Office over the past 12 months in initiating a higher level of public safety service, which has already enhanced the quality of life for our residents. As a high school and youth league football coach for many years, one of my greatest passions is working with children. I am proud that our Civil Citation Initiative has kept Broward County youth out of the courtroom and in the classroom. Instead of a permanent arrest record, which could severely limit opportunities later in life, a youth who commits a first-time misdemeanor will now have a second chance to lead a productive life through the non-criminal, civil citation process. Our Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) Unit is the centerpiece of our efforts to fight violent crime. Since its inception 11 months ago, the V.I.P.E.R. Unit has proactively targeted Broward County’s most dangerous criminals. This unit has put hundreds of thugs behind bars, taken dozens of firearms off our streets, recovered thousands of dollars in drug money and contributed to Broward County having the largest drop in crime in over a decade. We initiated mandatory Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for school resource deputies, field training deputies and homeless outreach liaisons. CIT deputies are specifically trained to recognize signs of mental illness, offering a specialized approach to situations that require a more caring response instead of the traditional “enforcement” approach. Deputies assigned as homeless outreach liaisons are the backbone of our Homeless Outreach Initiative. With specific training to navigate through the maze of social service providers, deputies are better prepared to guide a homeless individual to an appropriate treatment and/or care facility. Over the past year, BSO has become more reflective of our multicultural county. Our achievements in this area were not made by hiring mandates, but by putting the most qualified people in the best possible positions. Our Community Outreach Team, a civilian unit with diverse skills, backgrounds and language fluencies, successfully connects BSO with the community. We listen and better respond to residents. While we reflect on our accomplishments, we also remember the tragic death of Deputy Daniel Rivera, who died in a fatal car crash. We honor his service and commitment to the agency. Each day, BSO law enforcement, detention and fire personnel place themselves in harm’s way. Whether they are responding to a crisis or assisting a person in need, their safety is at risk. The dedication and professionalism of our men and women are regularly displayed serving Broward County. We are thankful for their safety and grateful for the service of all employees who support our efforts. In the coming year, we will raise the awareness of animal abuse, neglect and abandonment, and encourage the reporting of crimes against animals. Treating animals humanely is conducive to fostering a better, safer community. Together we can give voice to those without one by recognizing animal abuse as a possible indicator of other future serious problems, including child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assaults. Please assist law enforcement by reporting such crimes to BSO or your local police department. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is relentless and innovative in crime prevention strategies. May we always maintain respect for our citizens and each other and may our integrity and professionalism be as visible as our badges. I wish you all a happy, healthy and blessed new year. Please stay safe! To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter @browardsheriff.
