Spring is Just Around the Corner
A
round the world spring is welcomed as a
sign of renewal and progress. While this winter season did not bring any significant cold weather periods to South Florida, we were able to watch the news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the northern states. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Northeast is bracing for yet another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. While we hardly consider the winter season as beach weather, snowbirds from up north and visitors from around the world flock to Florida to enjoy our mild weather, our sea breezes, our white sandy beaches and everything else the Sunshine State has to offer. With spring break approaching why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our state with a stay-cation. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? And where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the inter-coastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in Florida! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some FUN.

Many Egg-Citing Ways to Celebrate Spring By Debby Teich
A
rea residents have many “egg-citing”
ways to celebrate the arrival of spring. The City of Cooper City will host egg hunts for young children and teens. The Town of Davie offers an egg hunt for young children combined with a multi-ethnic festival. On March 28, The City of Cooper City will sponsor a Twilight Egg Hunt for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, at the Community Center, from 7 to 9pm. When the teens arrive, they will participate in fun “egg games” inside until the time of the hunt. Once it is dark, organizers will turn off the park lights and participants can use their flashlights to search for eggs filled with chocolate and other special prizes. There is no charge for the evening of fun, but Cooper City teens must pre-register by calling the Cooper City Recreation Dept. Teens must also bring their own baskets and flashlights. On March 30, the Cooper City Recreation Department will host an Egg-stravaganza for toddlers through 5th grade, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, at 10am sharp. The event is for Cooper City residents and their guests. The kids will hunt with others their own age and in grade school, while parents wait on the side. After the hunt, they can enjoy snow cones and special treats and get their favorite tattoo. There is no charge to participate and children should bring their own basket. “It is a great opportunity for residents to have fun with friends and neighbors,” said Lynda Good, Director of the

Also on March 30, the Town of Davie will host the 33rd Annual Spring Festival, Egg Hunt & International Multi-Ethnic Festival, at Robbin’s Lodge, 4005 Hiatus Rd., from 9am to 1pm. The egg hunt begins at 10:05am sharp and ends shortly thereafter. Kids, 8 and under, who live and attend school in Davie, will be divided up by age as they search for more than 8,000 eggs. Davie Residents and Employees Join the Mayor’s Fitness and Health Challenge By Debby Teich
T
wo of the most popular New Year’s resolutions are to lose
weight and get fit. If these were your goals, the Town of Davie and Baptist Medical Plaza at Davie have partnered to help you achieve them throughout the year by participating in the Mayor’s Fitness and Health Challenge. Davie fitness specialist Guy DiCarlo came up with the idea to encourage Davie residents, businesses and employees to choose healthier lifestyles in 2013. Mayor Judy Paul was quick to get the initiative started. “I knew I had to lose weight and get into better shape since I had my knee replacement, so that I could get back on my horse and ride the trails in Davie,” said Mayor Paul. “It has been a struggle, so I decided it is always better to have the company of others in any challenge in life. Luckily, I am in a position to facilitate a program like this and, in turn, help others as well.” For the 2013 calendar year, a combination of complimentary Zumba classes, education classes, community walks, and health screenings are available for all Town of Davie employees, residents and businesses who join the Challenge. Monthly weigh-in meetings are held to monitor each participant’s progress. All classes and meetings are held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, unless
otherwise noted. The program is facilitated by Human Resource Director Stacey Hipsman and Benefits Analyst Grace Garagozzo. There are three Health Challenge Captains, including: Police Lieutenant Maureen Themis-Fernandez, Fire Department Driver Engineer David Falcone, and Fire Inspector Susan Dipuglia. There is no cost to the Town for this program, since Baptist Health of South Florida is picking up the expenses out of concern for the community. “We are excited that we can offer this at no cost to employees and residents alike and have scheduled it at a time when most people can attend,” said Mayor Paul. “Remember to bring your children along, so we can continue to fight childhood obesity as well. It will be great family time.” To register or find out more about the program, visit www.davie-fl.gov, search for “hot topics” and click on “Mayor’s Fitness & Health Challenge.” The web page includes a schedule of classes, fit friendly menus, tips for heart healthy eating, and more. Everglades Art Competition Is Open to Broward Students By Debby Teich
M
uch of Broward County is surrounded by canals and water-
ways which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. This month, students will have an opportunity to celebrate and honor Earth Day by taking a close look at their environment and capturing the images on paper during the 7th Annual “Everglades Eyes: What Children See” art competition, presented at Old Davie School Historical Museum in partnership with Central Broward Water Control District’s (CBWCD) outreach program. The deadline to submit work is April 12. The contest is open to all 4th and 5th grade students who attend Broward County public and private schools. The artwork must be original and can be presented in oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic painting; mixed media; photography and collage. It should capture an image or images of Broward County waterways and may include canals, lakes and the Everglades. People, pets and wildlife images within this context are welcomed. The artwork will be on display at an exhibit at the Old Davie School, from April 26 to May 24. Winners will be selected by a panel of local community members, including elected officials and local artists. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place. “So often elementary school students are provided with inforIn 2012, Camila Nehdar of Manatee Bay Elementary mation, but have no way to show School won first place for “River Eyes.”

Broward County Event Reminds Residents that Water Matters By Debby Teich
Whether you use water for drinking, swimming, fishing or irrigation, it is a vital part of your everyday life. Many take it for granted, thinking that we could never run out of it. However, it is actually our most precious resource. On March 9, from 9am to 3pm, the Town of Southwest Ranches will join many other municipalities in Broward County for the 11th Annual Water Matters Day at Tree Tops Park in Davie. This year’s theme is “Preserve. Protect. Conserve.” Water Matters Day is Broward County’s signature water conservation event. Over 40 educational exhibits and booths will be on display to help residents learn about our local and regional water resources, how water is managed, and how we are planning for our future water needs. They will receive tips on water conservation, find out about rebates and incentives for upgrading to water-conserving devices, and learn how to create “Florida friendly” and drought tolerant landscapes. There will also be face painting and crafts for children, rain barrel workshops, performances by environmental folk singer Grant Livingston, and a variety of giveaways and raffles. One lucky raffle winner will win an irrigation system upgrade courtesy of Rainbird. Attendees who visit at least 12 exhibits can take home free native plants. For the past 11 years, the Town
of Southwest Ranches has participated in the event. This year, the Town’s booth will highlight the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitat Program. It is working towards certification as a Community Wildlife Habitat and the booth at Water Matters Day supports this effort. Southwest Ranches volunteers will be available to assist county residents interested in certifying their yards. “With Broward County’s rapidly expanding population, water resources are under constant stress,” said December LauretanoThe Town of Southwest Ranches Haines, PROS Coordinator for the Town of has participated in the event Southwest Ranches. “Our urban and natural for the last 11 years. systems hinge on our ability to protect this limited resource, while balancing the needs of all of Broward’s water users. Individuals play a vital role. The Town of Southwest Ranches is committed to helping spread the message of water conservation. We must all recognize the effect we have on our water supply. We’re all water managers and must all do our part to ensure it will serve us and our children in years to come.” Tree Tops Park is located at 3900 S.W. 100th Ave. in Davie. Admission to Water Matters Day is free, but the park’s weekend and holiday admission fee of $1.50 per person will be in effect. Children five and under are free. The Secret of Celebrities: IV Nutrition By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
T
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging
he future of Vitamin Therapy is here – Intravenous
(IV) Nutrition Therapy. It is the secret of Madonna, Rihanna, Brad Pitt, Simon Cowell and many other celebrities. It helps them maintain their vitality and gives them an energy boost. It also makes them feel better and look younger. As recently debuted on Dr. Oz, IV nutrition therapy allows 100% absorption of vitamin and minerals, which are infused directly into the vein and into the body’s circulation. This is unlike taking oral supplements, which have to pass through the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract to be absorbed. Oral supplements with the best functioning GI tract have an absorption rate of approximately 20-30%; thus making IV Nutrition therapy the best method to allow for 100% absorption of minerals and vitamins. IV nutrition therapy by no means takes away the importance of eating a healthy diversified diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and taking oral vitamin supplementation. It does, however, offer the ability to treat several conditions that are just as diversified as the functions that these vitamins and minerals have on the body. For example, IV nutrition therapy can assist in the treatment of migraines, chronic fatigue, hair loss, irritable bowel syndrome and much more. Several professional athletes utilize IV nutrition therapy to give them a performance boost or help decrease healing time from an injury. Each session of Intravenous Nutrition therapy is tailored specifically to your needs and is based on your symptoms, history, personal needs, and/ or nutritional testing. Nutritional testing offers the ability to evaluate several essential nutrients for our body. Deficits or borderline deficits can then be added to customize your cocktail of IV Nutrition treatment. Vitamins and minerals are at the cornerstone of all functions within the body. They are the raw material that keeps the body alive and healthy. They are responsible for the growth, repair, maintenance and homeostasis of the body. Those who are on the treatment often feel unstoppable, revitalized and energized. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, IV Nutrition Therapy and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Their practice, Bellissimo Medical Spa, is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www.BellissimoMediSpa.com.

Literary Feast Connects Authors and Readers By Debby Teich
F
or 25 years, the Literary Feast has been connecting those who
are passionate about writing with avid readers. The community event has brought more than 365 authors to Broward County. On March 15, the Literary Feast will return for a four-day festival. More than 20 authors will participate in a series of events that will have them speaking to donors, students and South Florida’s book-loving community. This year’s Literary Feast will take an in-depth look at the works and life of legendary author Edith Wharton. Although she died 75 years ago, and mostly wrote about turn-of-the-century American society, she is still one of the most influential writers today. Four authors, all Wharton experts, will pay tribute to the writer, her books and even her home. They include: Jennie Fields, The Age of Desire: A Novel, Irene Goldman-Price, author of My Dear Governess: The Letters of Edith Wharton to Anna Bahlmann, Francesca Segal, author of The Innocents and Richard Guy Wilson, Edith Wharton at Home: Life at the Mount. On March 15, the event kicks off with a luncheon that features a Literary Feast author. It continues on March 16 with A Night of Literary Feasts, a signature fundraising event that includes an opportunity for ticket holders to meet all of the Feast authors at a cocktail party, as well as intimate dinners featuring one or two authors
hosted in private homes and upscale restaurants. Space is limited. On March 17, the public is invited to a free event at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center on the Davie campus of Nova Southeastern University. All of the authors will participate in a series of lectures, discussions and book signings. On March 18, during Novel Day for Students, the authors will engage with students at Broward County high schools to discuss their work and the craft of writing. The authors will also announce the winners of the annual Novel Day for Students Short Story Contest, with more than 500 students participating each year. Last year, the Broward Public Library Foundation raised more than $130,000 at the Literary Feast. “Literary Feast is crucial to sustaining the Broward Public Library Foundation’s mission to support Broward County libraries’ programs and services,” said Joseph M. Goldstein, who is Literary Feast 2013 Co-Chair, along with his wife, Mary. “Projects such as the Summer Reading Program, Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays, computer instruction classes and the innovative E-Reader loan program at the libraries are supported through the dollars raised through this unique event.” For information, visit www.LiteraryFeastOnline.org or www.facebook.com/bplfoundation. Saint Mark Students Collect Cards and Snacks for the Troops By Debby Teich

housands of men and women are abroad fighting for
our country 24/7. This can take a toll on soldiers, who are separated from family, friends and loved ones. Students at Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic School in Southwest Ranches have been participating in the “Remember Our Troops” drive to help provide them with inspiration, hope and courage. Members of Girl Scout Troop 11031 came up with the idea for the service project in 2011. Since most of the girls are students at Saint Mark, they decided to implement it at their school. The project was so successful that Principal Shirley Sandusky agreed to make it an ongoing effort. “It is important to teach the students about patriotism at an early age,” said Sandusky. “They need to understand that there are military troops fighting for their freedom and safety. We must always keep the troops in our hearts and minds.” The Girl Scouts set up collection boxes at the school. Throughout the year, students in grades pre-k to 8th have been donating a variety of dry snacks, including nearly 600 granola bars. They have also been creating cards for the troops. When the collection boxes are full, the Girl Scouts deliver the snacks and cards to Kate Andrews at the Plantation Police Department Outreach Center, who ships them to troops that lived/live in the South Florida area. “To the young ladies of Troop 11031, what can I say other thank you so very much for all your hard work,” wrote Kate in a letter. “I can’t believe all the treats you collected. Cover Story
Something to Smile About: A Dental Partnership That Focuses on Community By Julie Levin
I
t doesn’t tell the whole story to say that Dr. Kistama Naidu and
Dr. William Peña live in South Florida. In many ways, the talented, young dental professionals are South Florida. Both came from humble beginnings, migrated to this country at a young age and went to school at some of the area’s most disadvantaged schools. They never lost sight of their vision to one day give back to their community, and that’s exactly what they are doing today. Recently, they created a partnership designed to create beautiful smiles across Southwest Broward. “We are a partnership serving the dental needs of our community,” said Dr. Kistama Naidu, who is board-certified in Orthodontics. “Our vision is to be very accessible to the community we serve.” Naidu Orthodontics and the American Pediatric Dental Group have joined forces for a common mission: to provide state-of-the art comprehensive pediatric dental care from the earliest check-ups through orthodontic care. Knowing that many people are struggling economically, they put a priority on making sure there is care for everyone.”There are a lot of offices that exclude patients based on their insurance and cater to a certain demographic. We are in healthcare because we want to help a lot of people, and it shouldn’t be based on what your financial level is,” said Dr. Peña, a board-certified Pediatric Dentist who founded the American Pediatric Dental Group. Both doctors make it a priority to get out in the community, meet people and make
a difference. They provide agendas and homework folders to local students each year, attend community and charitable events, career days, and fundraisers. Both have done overseas dental missions and locally provide dental care for children in foster care. Dr. Peña spends one day a week at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital performing dental treatment requiring surgical care under general anesthesia.”Education has been a big part of our succession through life, so for us it is about giving back to the community we’ve come from,” Dr. Peña said. Inside their offices, the goal is warm and compassionate care. They make a point of not overbooking appointments in order to treat patients with respect for their time. They have weekend and evening hours and an attentive staff that works together to minimize wait time as much as possible. The kids even get to have a little fun in their offices. West Pines is done up in Miami Heat colors, thanks to Dr. Naidu’s longtime basketball passion. The office in the East Pines relays their mutual passion for travel: each room is like a different “porthole” into a new city, just like on a cruise ship. Through hand-painted murals, patients get to take a west to east tour of the country from Hawaii to Miami. When they look up, there are televisions over every chair and a great warm, homey feel in the office. Both offices have aromatherapy to help calm patients. It all combines for experienced dental care based on customer service, reputation and quality.”We want kids to leave here with a positive experience about going to the dentist,” said Dr. Naidu. His passion for patient excellence is a vision Dr. Naidu established many years ago,
24
after undergoing his own dental treatment. During his care, he came across caring, respectful and understanding professionals who helped chart the course for his own professional path. It’s a mission he remains committed to, offering the best care and treatment available, in the shortest treatment time possible. Dr. Naidu came to this country in 1985 from British Guyana. He stayed in South Florida to receive his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, then Dr. William Peña and Dr. Kistama Naidu furthered his studies at Barry University obtaining his Masters in Biological Sciences. He received his dental education and specialty in Orthodontics at the prestigious Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. He’s an avid scuba diver, basketball player and traveler, having already been to 42 countries. Dr. Peña received a dual degree Doctor of Dental Medicine and Masters in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco where he received a certificate of Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry and a Master’s Degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. Dr. Peña is the recipient of the honorary Eric B. Bystrom D.D.S Memorial Pediatric Dentistry Award for the Excellence in the Treatment of Special Needs Patients. The staff is specially trained to handle children with Autism, ADHD, in wheelchairs, on stretchers or battling other medical conditions. Private rooms are available and all measures are taken to make sure the child is comfortable before any work is done. “We do what makes the child comfortable,” Dr. Peña said. Dr. Peña moved to South Florida from Colombia in 1984. He and wife Richelle are the proud parents of Adrian, 19 months, and Leia, five months. Dr. Peña is an avid reader, traveler, and the ultimate family guy. Come by and say hello at one of their two locations: 18503 Pines Boulevard, Suite 304. Further east, you’ll find them at 10021 Pines Boulevard, Suite 100. Visit them at www.NaiduOrtho.com (954-438-1965) or www.AmericanPediatricDental.com (954-417-1337).

Davie Elementary Students Prepare for a Lesson on Road Safety By Debby Teich
S
afety has always been a top priority at Davie Elementary.
Students currently participate in Water Safety, Bike Safety, Stranger-Danger Safety, Fire Safety, Car Safety and Internet Safety programs at the school. Beginning in May, Davie Elementary will also offer a Roadway Safety program. “Over half of our students walk to school every day,” said George Pinder, PE Teacher/Safety Patrol Coordinator. “We want to make sure that they are safe.” The objective of Project Roadway Rules is to promote roadway safety through kinesthetic play. All students in pre-k through first grade will participate in the program during physical education classes. As they travel along a mock roadway and walking route, they will practice the proper way to cross the street at traffic lights that change colors manually. They will also learn the correct way to adhere to roadway signs, such as: stop, one way, yield, children crossing, speed limit, railroad, do not enter, crosswalk, and more. “The students will be more confident and knowledgeable when they traverse public roadways as pedestrians, bicyclists and motor passengers,” said Pinder. Students will also meet with a police officer, who will help engage them through visual prompts and verbal discussions. The police officer will also assist with directing students and reinforcing the roadway sign rules. In order to pay for the signage, Pinder entered the 5th Annual Education Excellence and Safety Grant Competition and won. He received a check for $500 to fund the project. The contest was open to teachers at Broward County Public Schools that are located in the Town of Davie and have a majority of students that are residents of the Town of Davie. It aims to support and encourage student achievement by providing up to $500 in grants for school projects. It was sponsored by the Davie Youth Education and Safety (Y.E.S.) Advisory Board.
George Pinder, PE Teacher, is pictured with some of the pre-k and kindergarten students that will be participating in the Roadway Safety program.
“We recognize that school funds are limited and many teachers are spending their own money to initiate special projects,” said John Pisula, Chairman of the YES Advisory Board. “We want them to know their efforts are not going unnoticed.” Over the past few years, the Y.E.S. Advisory Board has contributed over $5,000 to support Davie teachers. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov or send an email to jpisula@att.net.

University School Families Gather for International Night By Debby Teich
O
ver 700 students, parents, grandparents and other guests
gathered in the University School of NSU’s theater for the Upper School’s 19th Annual International Night. “This event celebrates the diversity in our school community,” said William Kopas, director of the Upper School. “It also showcases the talent of many of our students.” International Night began with a Parade of Nations. Students walked around the room holding flags from the countries where they or their parents were born. Fortysix countries were represented, including Belize, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia and
28
many others. The students also shared interesting facts about their countries. The event also included 14 different performances based on a variety of international themes. The Chinese and Spanish classes sang a song, the French classes produced a video, a student sang an Italian song, several students performed an Indian dance, and much more. After the show, the crowd moved outside. They sampled international cuisine from the food trucks and listened to the sounds of Mariachi and Calypso bands. “International Night brings everyone together to celebrate the best of who we are as a school,” said Spanish teacher Edward Johnson, who has been organizing the event for the past 10 years.

Demand Is High. According to Steve Harney, national Real Estate prognosticator, homes are selling at a pace not seen since 2007. The most recent Existing Home Sales Report by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows annual sales in 2012 increased 9.2% over 2011. According to the NAR Profile of International Homebuyers, Florida is still the most sought after state by foreign purchasers. In spite of the low inventory, sales are up 26.9% over the same quarter last year and the pended sales are up 46.4%. Supply Is Low. Nationally, the monthly supply of houses for sale is at its lowest point (4.4 months) since May of 2005. The current month’s supply is down 21.6% from the same time last year. Historically, inventory increases dramatically in the spring. Selling now when demand is high and supply is low may garner you your best price. However, there is only a 3.9 months of supply of single-family homes in Davie and Cooper City. Inventory is down 30.4% over last quarter. I am experiencing multiple bids on my listings and buyers paying higher than list price in some instances. In fact, my listings are flying off the shelf! New Construction Is Back. Over the last several years, most homeowners selling their home did not have to compete with a new construction project around the block. As the market is recovering, you will see more and more new construction which is your competition. Interest Rates Are Projected to Inch Up. The Mortgage Bankers’ Association has projected mortgage interest rates will inch up approximately one full point in 2013. Whether you are moving up or moving down, your housing expense will be more a year from now if a mortgage is necessary to purchase your next home. As you can see from the snapshot of Davie and Cooper City Single Family homes, we are in out of the “bubble.” The red “pended” line is inching upward—which is indicative of a market in recovery. Those pended sales will be closing, and there will be fewer and fewer homes on the market. This drives up the prices. Give me a call today for an evaluation. Is it time for you to make your move? If you would like a comprehensive, comparative market analysis of a property, contact me at Horton.z@ewm.com, and I will send your report within 24 hours. Where Will Your Heart Lead You? “To more visits with my grandma!” Alexandra Khamissian was only 21 when a late-night study session was interrupted by nausea, numbness in her hands and pressure in her chest. She thought it was caused by anxiety. “It was a hectic time. I was studying a lot. And exercising, and not eating well.” When the pressure didn’t subside, Alex asked her mom to call an ambulance, and followed her heart to Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute. “I had a heart attack on my grandmother’s birthday. Now, thanks to Memorial, I can share many more birthdays to come with mi abuela. Now it’s like my second birthday, too!”

CN Legally Speaking
Parental Rights? By Evan Baron
S
everal years ago, Florida modified the laws
pertaining to custody of minor children. The designation of “Primary” parent was removed from our laws in an effort to better equalize the perception of equality for mother and father. If the parties are going through a divorce and there are minor children, neither parent will be labeled the “Custodial Parent.” This more or less clarified the concept of Shared Parental Responsibility or coparenting. Moms and Dads are to be considered equal. However, this is not always the case. If the parents are not married and a child is born “out of wedlock,” a father must establish his rights in court. This is true even if the father is named on the child’s birth certificate. Florida Law states: “The mother of a child born out of wedlock is the natural guardian of the child and is entitled to primary residential care and custody of the child unless the Court enters and order stating otherwise.”
1655 North Commerce Pkwy., Ste. 201, Weston, FL 33326 email: Law@DivorceBroward.com
Therefore, unless there is an order from a judge declaring the father to be the father of the child, he has no legal rights pursuant to Florida law. Unlike a child born to a married couple, a father of a child born to an unmarried couple must establish his parental rights. Until such time as there is a court order, the father can be prevented from having time with his child. To establish those rights, a father must file a Petition to Determine Paternity. In the petition, the father is asking the court to recognize him to be the father. If in fact the mother agrees that he is the father, an order can be signed which will establish his rights. If the mother denies the father’s paternity, the court will require the parties to take a DNA test. Once Paternity is established, the father has all the rights and obligations of any father in Florida. These rights and obligations will be the same as if the parties were married. As a result, a Parenting Plan needs to be established which would determine time sharing between the parties. In addition, a child support obligation will be established pursuant to Florida law. If you have had a child and were not married, it is important to understand the rights and obligations each parent needs to establish in court. Until such time as there is a court order, these right or obligations don’t really exist.

CN Ask the Expert
Developmental Flatfoot in Children By Robert H. Sheinberg, DPM
D
evelopmental flatfoot is one of the most com-
mon conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern.
CAUSES
▸▸ Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. ▸▸ Congenital bone abnormalities. ▸▸ Trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch. ▸▸ Tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the foot deformity.
SYMPTOMS
▸▸ Young children may constantly prefer to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. ▸▸ Leg pain, especially at night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. ▸▸ Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity. ▸▸ Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.

▸▸ Lowering or complete collapse of the arch. ▸▸ Front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. ▸▸ Knock-Knees. ▸▸ The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. ▸▸ A child that is overweight and lacks athletic ability. ▸▸ General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ The child or teenager does not run correctly.
TREATMENT
▸▸ Complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). ▸▸ Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. ▸▸ Occasionally immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles. ▸▸ Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. ▸▸ In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. Most often very simple procedures can be performed to give the child or teenager an arch, allowing them to walk, stand and run correctly and efficiently.

Using Chapter 13 to Keep Your Home and Other Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in
which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and credit cards and all other unsecured debt are wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. Your lender even has the right to continue a foreclosure on your home during a Chapter 7 with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the home is worth. Many consumers, however, are unaware or unwilling to consider the immediate benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.
Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures his/her debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees and escrow shortages. All credit card and other unsecured debt can usually be negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, and you may even be eligible to reduce student loan payments, wipe out IRS debt, and even reduce your car payments. However, the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence. You may also be able to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties, and pay off those properties in as little as just three years. In order to wipe out a second mortgage from your home, the amount owed for the first mortgage must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to a debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and even reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property down to the property’s market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, and under one affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and stays current on plan payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure of any properties listed in the plan. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the home is worth and have a second mortgage, line of credit or other liens on that property, then you are a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have any investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Dental Trauma By Dr. Maria Grosman
Y
ou are going about your regular business on
a Wednesday afternoon and the phone rings. It is the nurse from your child’s school informing you that he/she has fallen in the playground. It seems that there was an injury to the mouth. You are assured that your child is comfortable and the bleeding has stopped. The nurse would like to know what YOU would like to do next. This is not an uncommon situation. Studies show that one in five children will experience some form of oral trauma during the school years. First decide if the involved tooth is a primary tooth (“baby tooth”). The baby teeth are smaller, whiter in color, and those in the front of the mouth tend to fall out naturally around the ages of 6-8 years. In this situation, you do not need to do anything yourself. See your dentist as soon as possible. The most important thing to remember in this situation is NOT to put back a knocked out baby tooth. The reason is that it may cause damage to the permanent tooth developing underneath. What if a permanent tooth is knocked out? Immediately locate the tooth after impact. It should be picked up by the crown (the part of the tooth normally seen when smiling) and the root should be rinsed under running water, without touching it, for 10 seconds to remove any debris. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and support it by biting down softly on gauze or tissue. Do not worry if the tooth does not fit properly. Having the tooth in its natural environment is the best way to keep the tissue of the tooth healthy for reattachment. If this is not possible, you can place the tooth in a cup of milk or the child’s own saliva. The two most important factors in saving the tooth are the solution of transport and the time taken till replantation. What if the permanent tooth is injured but not knocked out? See if the tooth has moved or if it is bleeding. The best prognosis is when the injured permanent tooth has not moved (even if it is slightly loose) and there is no observed bleeding (even if the tooth is fractured). In this case, you should still see your dentist within 48 hours. Just make sure that any tooth fragment is located and stored in water as it may be used in restoring the tooth later. If the injured permanent tooth has either moved in the bone or the tooth is bleeding as a result of fracture, see a dentist immediately. The tooth may require a splint or some initial root canal treatment. Again remember to recover any fragments for future restoration. Considering the importance of timing in dealing with most of the above scenarios, we cannot stress enough the importance of finding a dental home for your child at an early age. Being an established patient of a dental office will ensure quicker access to care in a familiar environment. It will also increase the likelihood of receiving “after hours” care if needed. We hope that by following some of these basic guidelines in dental trauma you will feel empowered to handle most dental emergencies. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Act Now to Prevent Colon Cancer Preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue - in this case, polyps - actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” • Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. • Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to at least 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up.
• Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a Steven D. Wexner, MD, screening colonoscopy FACS, FRCS, FRCS(ed) Cleveland Clinic Florida, at age 50. Anyone at Chair of Colorectal Surgery increased risk should be screened by age 40 - earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care.

Pet care
Top Questions for the Vet By Stuart Sobol, DVM
I
Dr. Dan’s Animal Clinic
wanted to share the answers to some questions
that clients have recently asked. I have a 12-year-old Labrador Retriever. He is a great dog and seems very healthy, but has lots of trouble getting up on his backlegs, especially in the morning. I know his hips may be arthritic. What can be done? There is much that can be done for a pet in this situation. I tend to start treatment slowly and then add medicines as needed. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are readily available in pet stores and can even be found in some pet foods. Those supplements are used to delay the onset of arthritis and to slow the progression of arthritis once present. They are safe and effective.
At Dr. Dan’s Animal Clinic we strive to produce a high quality veterinary experience. I will personally go above and beyond your expectations to provide you with a comprehensive veterinary visit and have instructed my staff to do the same. You will notice the difference from the moment you enter the hospital. -- Dr. Sobol

Most old dogs and cats should be on glucosamine with chondroitin. Also keeping your pets weight normal can be very helpful. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines are added on as needed bases. If more help is needed, then the non-steroidal medicine can be given on a regular basis. At times, other pain medicines can be added. Consult with a veterinarian for more specifics on this topic. A newer option I love is soft tissue laser therapy. Laser therapy is non-invasive, non-painful and effective, all with no negative effects. The laser light causes a cellular change within the joints and drives out pain and inflammation. Comments like “my dog can climb the steps again” and “my dog can get up to greet me at the door again” assure me the laser is very effective. Why does my dog constantly lick her paws? This is a very common complaint. In most cases, the pet has some type of allergy, whether it is to food or an inhaled allergy from the air called “atopy.” In other cases, the pet may be stressed or have anxiety. My dog goes nuts when it thunders. Can anything be done? Training can help. Noise desensitization is a technique where storm noises (commercially available on CD’s and other) are played at low levels on a daily basis. The volume is slowly increased to acclimate the dog to the sound of thunder and storm noises. What is the most unusual case you have seen? There are several that come to mind. Recently, I saw a cat that actually had five legs. The cat had a full femur extending from the pelvis. I want to be a veterinarian. How much education does it require? It requires four years of college and four years of veterinary school, for a total of eight years after high school. It is a long road, but it is 100% worth it. Dr. Stuart Sobol is a veterinarian at Dr. Dan’s Animal Clinic, 4821 SW 148th Avenue, in Davie. For information, send an email to drdansanimalclinic@comcast.net or call 954-680-5777.

Gun Safety and Responsibility By Sheriff Scott Israel
O
ften times, people view me only as the Sheriff
of Broward County. They seem to forget that I am a father and husband first. My primary responsibility is to protect my family. However, as your Sheriff, it is also my responsibility to ensure the very same safety for the citizens of Broward County. I can assure you that the safety of our community is not something I take lightly. Working in law enforcement for over 30 years, I have seen some horrific things. Most recently, I was extremely disturbed by the senseless killings in Newtown, Connecticut and Aurora, Colorado. These despicable tragedies claimed the lives of many innocent people. These incidents are proof that no community is immune from tragedy. Through education, enforcement and safety initiatives, we can try to deter them from happening in our neighborhoods. In an effort to address the problem of rising gun violence in our nation and in our community, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is developing a multifaceted public safety campaign that will focus on reasonable gun control measures, enhanced school safety precautions and responsible gun ownership. I firmly believe that prevention cannot exist without education. As part of this initiative, we will develop an educational program for parents, students and all gun owners to teach safe firearm practices and awareness.

Strong presentation and communication skills. Reliable transportation a must. Newspaper or media background a plus, bilingual helpful. No Phone Calls Please! E-mail resume to: publisher@ourcityweston.com
Another component of getting guns out of our neighborhoods is the Gun Stoppers program. Often there are family members or friends who know of someone illegally possessing a firearm, but they don’t know what to do about it. I want you to know that you can do something and report it anytime – day or night. The Gun Stoppers program is administered by Broward County Crime Stoppers. The tip line number is 954-493-TIPS (8477). Our enforcement efforts on weapons violations will be fierce. We will target not only possession of illegal weapons, but also the criminals with a history of violent use of weapons. These people give responsible gun owners a bad name. I fully support legislation to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban. Enforcing a uniform national background check before the sale or transfer of firearms and prohibiting large capacity magazines and armor-piercing bullets are also essential steps in better protecting our communities. The passage of these reasonable restrictions also allows for the protection of our Second Amendment rights for all law-abiding gun owners. As we have all seen, a more aggressive approach to combating gun violence is imperative. I firmly believe that with the implementation of this comprehensive public safety campaign and the development of a national database to track weapons used in the commission of a crime, gun violence and illegal gun ownership in our community is a problem that can be more effectively reduced. Remember, Broward County is your home as well as mine. I encourage each resident to be alert and observant. We all play a part in keeping our community safe. Always report a crime or information about illegally-owned guns by calling Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy
S
By Debby Teich
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their
bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods and keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do.
Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program.
Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”?
I was one of the first people in South Florida to start using the real scientifically proven HCG diet. Six years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past five years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their Geri Kelleher, Owner weight loss goals with and Program Director this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before your eyes and watching them get their confidence back. How much can clients expect to lose with the Slender Fit U program? Patients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG and how does it result in rapid weight loss? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in every tissue of the human body, male and female, in miniscule amounts and is found in all living things. It is produced in very high levels during pregnancy. It almost completely controls the metabolic function through the hypothalamus throughout the pregnancy. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Is this a new diet? No. It has been used successfully for weight loss since 1953, when a British endocrinologist, Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, discovered its weight loss effects. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? I take great pride in the fact that 90% of Slender Fit U clients don’t regain any weight after successfully completing the program. After completing the Slender Fit U program successfully, you will have supported and
54
rebalanced your metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you will modify your relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss.
Before
After
Before
After
Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price. Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/ fat loss. However, those who want to exercise while on the program can do so. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. People like instant gratification. That’s what you get on this diet. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.”
What do you eat on the diet? You are
eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. There are no packaged meals. Because you are eating real food, it’s an easy transition onto stabilization and then regular eating and regular life. Is HCG more effective than losing weight with a just a low calorie diet? Following a traditional 500 calorie-a-day diet will leave you fatigued and irritable, and within a few days you will start to retain water due to being “protein deficient”. Without the HCG, you will lose both fat and muscle just as if you were on any “normal” diet. With Slender Fit U›s program, your goal is to lose stored fat, not just weight. Is HCG safe for both men and women? It is completely safe for both men and women. In fact HCG is used to treat male and female infertility in very large doses. HCG used for weight loss is a very tiny dose. Are there any side effects from the HCG? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They find even very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. This is partly due to your hypothalamus adjusting your metabolic rate, but largely due to the amount of calories circulating in
your system from the fat being released. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit! Can HCG be purchased over the counter? No. There is no such thing as homeopathic HCG. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. How does Slender Fit U’s program differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference between Slender Fit U and other places is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; you are not just a number. If you miss an appointment, we call you. We make sure that every person doing our program gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss and we also give injectable prescription B12.
Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.

What does the fitness program include?
Lorei’s fitness program includes a one-hour cross training class guided by a personal trainer using Power Plate Pro 7, Kamagon Balls and Suspended Body Training. The Power Plate is a revolutionary piece of equipment. It creates instability in the human body. With each vibration, the body is forced to perform reflexive muscle actions, 30 to 40 times per second. This full-body workout provides results in a fraction of the time required in a regular gym. The Power Plate 7 technology is a scientifically proven way to improve health and fitness and combat the effects of aging. Workouts using Power Plate result in greater improvement in the percentage of body fat, improve strength, flexibility, circulation, build bone density and alleviate pain.
What types of body toning treatments do you offer? We recommend body contour
therapy using Cavitation to reduce cellulite and flaccidity. Sessions last one hour and the treated areas usually show immediate results. Clients may lose a few inches after completing the therapy. We have found that clients experience better results when this therapy is combined with fitness, detox and good nutrition programs. We also offer body wraps for slimming and firming using organic products and detox therapies using Infrared Sauna and Presso-Therapy. Manual lymphatic drainage is also available.
What types of spa treatments do you offer?
Our most successful treatment is the Hydrafacial. This resurfacing procedure removes surface damage such as dead skin cells and impurities in the face, but it also replenishes the skin with antioxidants through Vortex-Fuxion technology. It is a 20-minute facial including: cleansing and exfoliation, acid peel, painless extractions, and hydration with antioxidants and Hyaluronic acid. Combined with Blue LED Therapy it improves acne-prone skin, and combined with Red LED Therapy it reduces the fine lines and wrinkles. We also offer organic facials using the Eminence Skin Care line and a full menu of massages including relaxation, deep tissue, sport and bamboo.
Lorei Body Toning is located at 2402 Weston Road in the Waterways Shoppes II. It is open from 8am to 8pm Monday through Friday. To schedule a complimentary consultation call (954) 349-3001.
