W
ith the start of spring this month , we wel-
come the new growth that comes with this season. The flowers are blooming, trees are budding, and we are introducing a new magazine. I’m thrilled to announce that with this issue we are expanding our local community news coverage to the City of Sunrise. Sunrise Town Times is the newest addition to our family of publications which have been serving readers in West Broward for over ten years. Each month Our City Weston and our Town Times magazines deliver award-winning, family-related, local news editorials to keep you informed on everything that is going on in your hometown. The pages are packed with interesting and informative articles about community events, school programs, new businesses and much more. Sunrise Town Times reaches 20,000 homes and businesses located between the Sawgrass Expressway and University Drive. This expands our overall coverage area from the Broward/Dade County line in the south all the way to Commercial Boulevard in the north. Combined with our other five monthly community news magazines serving the cities of Weston, Davie/Cooper City/ Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Plantation, we now provide locally focused news to 120,000 households throughout West Broward, reaching an estimated 400,000-plus readers each and every month. or 26 years , the
Literary Feast has been connecting passionate writers with avid readers in Support of Broward Public Library Foundation’s Mission. From March 15-17, more than 20 writers will participate in a series of events that will have them speaking to donors, students and South Florida’s book-loving community. The authors represent a variety of genres, including mystery, history, memoir, fiction, biography, social science and self-help. They list includes: Dani Shapiro, whose latest memoir, “Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life,” landed her on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday program; John Grogan, author of “Marley & Me”; Robin Cook, author of the medical thriller “CELL”; singer/author/playwright Rupert Holmes, who recently adapted the John Grisham novel, “A Time to Kill” for the Broadway stage; Arthur Agatston MD, author of “The South Beach” and its sequel, “Gluten Solution”; and many more. The event begins with A Night of Literary Feasts on March 15, at 6pm, at the Marriott Harbor Beach Hotel. This signature fundraising event consists of a gala

cocktail party with all of the Feast authors signing books. It is followed by a series of intimate dinners with authors hosted in private homes and upscale restaurants. Tickets for this event are $175. On March 16, from 12:30 to 5:30pm, the public is invited to LitLIVE!, a free event at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center on the Davie campus of Nova Southeastern University. All of the authors will participate in a series of lectures, discussions and book signings. On March 17, during Novel Day for Students, the authors will travel to Western High School, Nova High School, and other Broward County high schools to discuss their work and the craft of writing with thousands of students. The authors will also announce the winners of the annual Novel Day for Students Short Story Contest, which has more than 500 student participants each year. Winners at each school will be awarded cash prizes for first ($50), second ($25) and third ($25) place. The Literary Feast has raised $3 million since it began in 1988 to support literacy programs run through the library system that empower and enrich the community. Proceeds have helped support Broward County Library programs, such as the Summer Reading Program, free SAT/ACT prep classes for high school students, and free computer classes at libraries throughout the county. “This year’s Literary Feast brings a remarkable group of authors to Broward County,” said Joseph Goldstein, event Co-Chair and Vice Chair of the Broward Public Library Foundation Board of Directors. “It’s a great opportunity for South Florida book-lovers, and a wonderful way for the Library Foundation to raise much-needed funds to support Broward County Library’s literacy programs for children and adults.” For information about any of the events, visit www.LiteraryFeastOnline.org or www.facebook.com/ bplfoundation or call 954-357-7384.

Spring into Art Fest Includes Egg Drop and Other Activities By Debby Teich
The Davie Fire Rescue Department plays an integral role in the Eggstravaganza Egg Drop Contest.
I
f you drop an egg from the top of a Davie fire truck ladder ,
what is the best way to prevent it from breaking? On March 26, from 10am to 6pm, kids will have an opportunity to figure out the answer during Young At Art Museum’s Spring into Art Fest, which features the annual Eggstravaganza Egg Drop Contest and Art-Rageous spring activities. For $2, visitors to Young At Art can purchase an Egg Drop Kit that is filled with
tape, sticks, yarn, glue, string, and other recycled materials. The children will use their creativity, ingenuity and engineering skills to build a “nest” or “parachute” that will help cushion the egg. At 2pm, members of the Davie Fire Rescue Department will carry the eggs up an engine’s extension ladder. While the kids are yelling “drop those eggs,” fire fighters will release the eggs one at a time to see if they can survive the 50-foot fall. Depending on the outcome, the kids will hold up signs with words like “splat” and “cracked.” Prizes will be awarded to the winners. “The kids have so much fun,” said Penny Phillips, assistant manager for schools and public programming. “The crowd goes crazy every time an egg breaks. They also cheer for the fire fighters as they climb the ladder. We always appreciate the Davie Fire Department’s help with the event.” The Eggstravaganza attracts children of all ages. When they are not successful, many return the following year to try a new approach. Some rely on their own skills, while others seek the help of their parents, other participants or educators at the event. Last year, fire fighters dropped over 200 eggs and fewer than a dozen landed intact. “The results are always surprising,” said Yumina Myers, schools and public programs manager. “We give the students all of the tools they need to be successful, but it just depends on what they do with them. The event requires them to think scientifically using the art materials.” There will be a variety of other activities available throughout the day. Visitors can use their creativity to make some of the following projects from repurposed materials: butterfly prints, flowers, caterpillar marionettes and stick puppets, bunny ears and more. They can also participate in the egg spoon race. Young At Art Museum is located at 751 SW 121st Ave, in Davie. For information, visit www.youngatartmuseum.org or call 954-424-0085.

Organizers are looking for groups, families, or individual residents to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. They also need residents with small boats to clean the canal waters. Check-in for the event begins at 8am at Davie Town Hall and the clean-up will last from 9 to 11:30am. Each of the volunteers will be assigned to a small area
along the C-11 Canal, between State Road 7 and Flamingo Road. In return for their efforts, participants will receive a free Waterway cap or T-shirt. They will also get a ticket to attend the “Trash Splash” pool party, which will be held at 11:30am on the same day at the Pine Island Park Pool. There will be free hot dogs and other free refreshments, as well as a D.J. spinning tunes all afternoon. Bring your swim suit. Everyone who cleans is invited Participants help at a prior event. to attend. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators and air conditioners. Each year, however, they find fewer large items and less trash. Holly Friedman plans to participate in the clean-up with her two children. “Davie is such a wonderful place to live and we need to make sure it stays clean,” said Friedman. “We must preserve the earth for our children and future generations.” Davie Town Hall is located at 6591 Orange Drive. Pine Island Park Pool is located at 3800 SW 92nd Avenue, in Davie. Pre-registration is required. For information and an application, visit www.davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1153 or 954-797-1166.

Cooper City Dads and Sons Spend Quality Time Together By Debby Teich
C
ooper City dads and their sons
recently gathered for a Father and Son Adventure at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2010, this hometown event has been a way for dads and their sons, K – 5th grade, to enjoy a special evening together. Many of them return year after year. “The goal of Cooper City Recreation Department is to promote community involvement by residents of all ages,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist. “We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reach the residents of Cooper City.” The City of Cooper City has offered mother-daughter and fatherdaughter events for many years. In an effort to get the boys involved, it added “Mom-Son Night of Fun” and “Father-Son Adventure” events. “We find that the boys really bring out the competitive spirit in their parents,” continued Boyle. At the event, 31 fathers enjoyed a night of adventure with their sons that included dinner and a variety of “flying adventure” themed activities. Dads and their sons flew handheld propellers and outfitted aviator rubber ducks with parachutes. They worked on an airplane picture frame project, played a Nintendo Wii flying game and competed in a paper airplane fly-off. They attended a presentation by the Markham Park Pilots Association, which spoke to the group and demonstrated radio controlled aircraft. The kids collected candy or a prize at each activity and received a goody bag on the way out. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

O
n March 9, runners and walkers will gather for the 33 rd Annual Cooper City Richardson 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fitness Run/ Walk at the Cooper City Sports Complex. The community event honors Jim Richardson and Ken Richardson, two Cooper City residents that have contributed to the success of the race over the past three decades. Both are retired from their professional fields and reside in northern Florida with their wives. They return each year in support of the race. The timed 5K Run/Walk begins at 8am. It starts and finishes at Cooper City Sports Complex and takes participants on a course through a residential neighborhood. The One-Mile Fitness Run/Walk starts at 8:45am and will be held inside the Cooper City Sports Complex. Registration and late packet pickup begins at 7am. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead the night before the race. Awards for runners will be presented to the Top Three Overall Male/Female, Top Three Masters Male/Female, Top Three Grand Masters Male/Female, Top Three Male/Female in each age division and Top Cooper City Resident Male/ Female. Participants in the One-Mile Fitness Run/Walk will receive a ribbon.
A runner will also receive the Top Male Master Harvey J. Johnson Memorial Award. The annual award was established in 1990 as a memorial tribute to Harvey J. Johnson, one of South Florida’s Top Male Masters and a Cooper City resident. The cost for registration prior to the event day for the 5K Run/Walk is $20 per person ($10 for youth 14 years and under) and $10 for the One -Mile Fitness Walk/ Run. All include a commemorative T-shirt. Event day registration for the 5K Run is an additional $5. Alan Miller has run in most of the races since the event started, and plans to participate again this year. “The race brings together residents and fitness enthusiasts from other communities for a special event that allows runners, walkers, adults and children to share a positive experience in Cooper City,” said Miller. “Like most people, I am proud of my hometown.” The Cooper City Sports Complex is located at 10500 Stirling Road. Fatigue – Is It Your Adrenal Glands? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
A
re financial pressures , emotional stress ,
unemployment, poor eating habits, smoking or drugs causing your adrenal glands to fail? Have you felt as though you just cannot seem to get yourself together? It is hard for you to relax or to get exercise? Do you find that you get sick more often? If so, then you, like many others, may be experiencing symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue. What is Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal Fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections. As the name suggest, its paramount symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any of the sings of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, tiredness or “gray” feelings. People suffering from adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, colas, or other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. Although it affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function, every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Your body does its best to make up for the under functioning adrenals, but it does so at a price. What causes adrenal fatigue? It is produced when your adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis, such as a death of a loved one, a physical crisis, such as major surgery, or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. How common is adrenal fatigue? It is estimated that approximately 66% of the population has some degree of low Cortisol. How can I tell if my adrenals are fatigued? ▸▸ Tendency to gain weight. ▸▸ Reduced sex drive. ▸▸ Unable to remember things and unclear thinking. ▸▸ Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5 p.m. ▸▸ Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning. ▸▸ Unexplained hair loss. ▸▸ Crave for salty, fatty, and high protein food such as meat and cheese. ▸▸ Decreased ability to handle stress and responsibilities. Can people experiencing adrenal fatigue feel their best again? Yes. With proper care, the right type of testing, and physician awareness, one can expect to feel good again. The adrenals can be placed back into balance with proper treatment that may include supplements by mouth and/or intravenously and lifestyle changes to create balance. For detailed information about how you can help support and correct your adrenal glands, we encourage you to make an appointment with Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette for your complimentary consultation. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989 to get your adrenals into balance. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, IV Nutrition Therapy and Sottopelle Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston.

Pembroke Pines has been helping patients maximize the life of their natural teeth so they can have a beautiful, confident smile. The experienced staff offers sophisticated restorative and cosmetic dental care. They use state-of-theart dental techniques to replace or restore natural teeth. If you want to look and feel better, call Smile Xperts today.
Can bridges cause problems? Bridges
can present some problems, because the natural teeth that lie on either side of the bridge are filed to accept the appliance. This step in the bridge-making procedure may make these teeth prone to bacterial plaque accumulations, decay, periodontal disease, and the possible need for future root canals.

I enrolled and graduated from the first dental graduating class of Nova Southeastern University in 2000. I worked for several other dentists. In 2002, I purchased an office in Pembroke Pines with three operatories and went to work full time. In October 2012, I opened a brand new 2,200 sq. ft. facility with seven operatories. Councilwoman Hattan Graduates from Leaders of Excellence Program By Debby Teich

avie Councilwoman C aryl M. Hattan
recently graduated from the Good Government Initiative’s Leaders of Excellence program, which provides elected officials with educational opportunities that they can then apply towards their public service. In the program, she was among sixteen elected officials from 15 jurisdictions in three counties, as well as two state representatives. The Leaders of Excellence program helps fill the gap between formal education in academic careers and life experience to create more effective decision-makers. It also creates a network of peers that elected leaders can turn to for shared ideas and support. It belongs to no party, nor to any particular ideology. “I am thrilled to participate in such a wonderful program that provided me with a beneficial and valuable experience to better serve my community,” said Councilwoman Hattan. “The program topics were very beneficial and expanded my knowledge base.” This year’s curriculum included topics on principled leadership and service, ethics, growth and planning issues, diversity and inclusion, budgets and finance, community involvement, redevelopment strategies and more. Presenters included a bi-partisan array of experts and dignitaries from all levels of

government. There were several first-hand accounts from former elected officials who learned from their successes, as well as their and mistakes. “In a year that has seen some low points for some government officials, I think it is encouraging to see these public servants going the extra mile to absorb as much information about good government as they can.” said Katy Sorenson, the program’s founder. “Councilwoman Hattan has taken the time in a very busy life to listen and learn more about key areas of her responsibility. That’s something that a lot of people don’t think elected officials are willing to do. Through leaders like her, we have real reason to believe that there are still many dedicated public servants who are working on behalf of their constituents.” The Good Government Initiative offers programs for elected officials, candidates, and interested citizens all year. Through Community Forums that delve into topical issues facing South Florida to candidate education and the Leaders of Excellence Program, the Good Government Initiative works to enhance the culture of our government to strive for excellence. The Initiative is independently incorporated with its own board and advisors. It is housed and supported by the University Of Miami, The Miami Foundation, and valued donors and volunteers.
Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/14) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. On April 5, she will test her “fear factor” once again, as she rappels from the roof of the B Ocean Hotel down to A1A during the 2nd Annual Over the Edge fundraiser for Gilda’s Club South Florida. “I love pushing myself to the limit, especially when it is for a wonderful cause,” said Lang. Gilda’s Club South Florida is hosting the rappelling event in partnership with Over the Edge USA and the B Ocean Fort Lauderdale. Participation is open to the first 92 fundraisers who reach a minimum pledge of $1,000, and are willing to take a risk, overcome their fear of heights, or just try something new - all while supporting Gilda’s Club South Florida. hen children enter their mid -teens and become young
adults, it is considered the “Age of Wisdom.” It is a time when removal of third molars becomes a “rite of passage.” That is why we use the term wisdom teeth for third molars. Not everyone must have their wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes wisdom teeth erupt normally into a person’s mouth and are perfectly functional. Others might have impacted teeth, which should be evaluated and a determination made as to the necessity of their removal. Some of us do not even develop wisdom teeth. I like to call these people “New Man.” As time has passed, man’s diet has changed from a tough grinding diet of meats and uncooked foods to a softer diet of cooked and processed foods. The need for multiple molars has been “genetically” reduced. Hence, from once having four molars, we are down to three and in some cases two.

As evolution has progressed and the average size of a human’s jaw has decreased, the space needed for a full set of 32 teeth has been diminished. In those cases where there is inadequate jaw length, the wisdom teeth virtually do not fit and can become “impacted.” They become wedged between another tooth and the jaw bone or there is inadequate room in the jawbone for the tooth to grow in all the way. The tooth may even be at the same height as the rest of the teeth; however, due to the decreased length of the jawbone, eruption is not possible. Each of these cases must be evaluated individually to decide whether the wisdom teeth are impacted and whether or not there is adequate space for eruption. Once that determination is made, the patient is informed and a treatment plan is developed. There are then anesthetic choices that the patient must make in consultation with the Oral Surgeon. Although some procedures can be done with a local anesthetic (novocaine alone), most people opt to be sedated or put to sleep for the amount of time it takes for removal of the teeth. This requires the patient to be in relatively good health. On the day of the procedure, the patient should have an empty stomach. He/ she should also be accompanied by a parent, if the patient is under 18 years old, or a driver over the age of 18, if the patient is over 18 years of age. There are other requirements that will be explained to the patient at the time of initial consultation. The appointment is usually made in the morning, since the patient will have an empty stomach. It also avoids hunger and accidental drinking or eating prior to the procedure. It is important to consult with an Oral Surgeon to determine whether or not you should have your wisdom teeth removed. An Oral Surgeon is a Dentist who has completed four or more post-graduate years in a hospital setting, doing only surgery and anesthesia training. Your Oral Surgeon is there to help you make an informed decision about your wisdom teeth. Dr. P. Stuart Seider’s practice is located at Broward Oral Surgery Associates, 3157 North University Drive, Suite #104. For information, call 954-431-1600 or visit www.browardoralsurgery.com.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture in the Young Athlete By Dr. Al DeSimone
A
nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.
The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. orties and Fabulous! We are all starting to
experience the wonders of the infamous “change of life”. What is menopause vs. post menopause vs. peri menopause? I am asked this question several times a day. Women begin to have changes in their menstrual cycle as early as in their late 30’s through their mid fifties. It is important to remember that this is different for every woman, and most importantly, a natural process. Women will frequently experience changes in their menstruation pattern, skipping cycles, bleeding more frequently, heavier or longer, and “hot flashes” or some type of temperature change. I often hear complaints of difficulty sleeping, maintaining their weight, an increase in premenstrual irritability and bloating. Many women also have questions regarding a decreased libido or desire for sex despite being in a loving and stable relationship. They complain of vaginal dryness, dry skin and thinning hair. The good news is, there are many options for women to regain their balance and improve these symptoms. While we cannot always reverse all of these symptoms, many of them can be improved and truly benefit a changing woman’s quality of life. The terms used to describe this period of change that women go through are defined generally as the transition or the menopause. The definition of menopause is a label used for a woman who has had no cycles for 12 months barring other medical issues. The average age of the menopausal woman is 51 years old. The term perimenopause refers to the 10 years prior to this point when a woman experiences many signs and symptoms. The most important part of my conversation with a woman who falls into this category is to reassure them that this is both a normal and natural process and they are likely not exaggerating their complaints. Every woman experiences this period of their lives differently. Some women may feel extreme symptoms and others may breeze through this time without noticing much change. Our ovaries are simply not producing the same levels of hormone that they did in our twenties and thirties. At the same time, women must understand that many but not all symptoms can be improved or eliminated and it takes time to see if the interventions will be effective. Believe it or not, adopting a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, exercise and stress management is truly the first line for every woman’s defense. We then discuss proper supplementation, and the topic of hormone replacement therapy. Hormone Replacement Therapy refers to giving a synthetically or bio-identical version of the hormones that our body is no longer producing regularly. HRT deserves a formal conversation with the details of all the risks and benefits. The first step every woman should take is to have her full annual exam including a detailed medical history, physical exam, pap screening, mammogram and if indicated, a bone density exam. I then recommend baseline hormone screening with any other pertinent lab work and a visit to review all. We can then address each patient’s concerns and together create a plan to make our way through the “ menopause maze.” Dr. Michele Lapayowker is a Board certified Gynecologist serving women in Broward since 1995. Her Plantation Office is in the Bennett Medical Plaza at 201 NW 82nd Ave, Suite 104, Plantation, Fl., 33324. Intelligence-Led Policing
The Reason You Should Sell Now
By Sheriff Scott J. Israel
W
hat is meant by “ intelligence - led policing”?
It is a way for the Broward Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies to analyze and utilize information on violent and habitual offenders and tips from the community to find better ways to fight crime. It is also a way to apply our resources more effectively and efficiently. The work of our Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) unit, created in February 2013 to combat spikes in violent crimes, is one way the Broward Sheriff’s Office is work-
ing smarter. V.I.P.E.R. builds its intelligence by collaborating with other departments within BSO as well as local, state and federal agencies, but the community plays a significant role in this crime-fighting method, too. No law enforcement agency can be effective without community partnerships. We rely on everyone to keep an eye on what’s happening in their neighborhood and to report criminal activity. With this information, new offenders and repeat offenders are identified. We can link crimes that were previously treated as separate offenses. This valuable information leads to better resource allocation and decisionmaking. Traditionally, law enforcement has spent more time responding to crime and less time working to prevent crime. The intelligence that drives V.I.P.E.R. allows us to identify and prevent threats from affecting our communities. Instead of blindly conducting sweeps or other less-effective approaches, we can now direct resources for maximum effectiveness. V.I.P.E.R. was formed by combining two crime-fighting units: our Regional Street Crimes Unit and Gun Squad. This merger helps us zero in on not only illegal weapons, but also on criminals with a history of the violent use of weapons. V.I.P.E.R. has made a marked difference in reducing violent crime in a small amount of time. With better intelligence on offenders and potential offenses, we have been able to target the six percent of criminals that commit approximately 65 percent of all violent crime. In 2013, V.I.P.E.R. was responsible for the arrest of 471 suspects including 337 felons and 134 misdemeanor offenders. Additionally, V.I.P.E.R. confiscated 63 firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun, and seized tens of thousands of dollars in drug money. While the numbers have been impressive, they are not a full reflection of V.I.P.E.R.’s success. Through our shared tips and efforts, we have captured criminals in other counties and states who were planning crimes. Our V.I.P.E.R. unit will continue to target, track, investigate and apprehend Broward County’s most violent criminals, while we at the Broward Sheriff’s Office will continue to find new ways of keeping our community safe. ight now, the market is strong . I f you are
even thinking of selling, do it now! Inventory is increasing; however, you can sell for top dollar.
Economics 101
The price of anything is determined by “supply and demand.” If many people are looking to buy an item and the supply of that item is limited, the price of that item increases. According to NAR, the supply of homes for sale increases every spring. Putting your home on the market now instead of waiting for the increased competition in the spring makes sense. Buyers in the market during the winter months are truly motivated purchasers. They want to buy now. With limited inventory available in most markets currently, a seller will be in a great position to negotiate. South Florida has had little to no new construction in the past five years. With the polar vortex and other extreme weather activity, there is an increase in folks flocking to our area. The social unrest of our friends to the south of the globe continues to increase Florida’s population. The largest percent of buyers are Canadians! Increased state taxes imposed on its citizens and local businesses has caused an exodus from certain states. Because of tourism and other factors, local businesses have enjoyed our “no income tax state” for years. With spring approaching, sellers might choose to upsize or downsize now. In my previous article, I gave you staging tips. There are many other things to consider.
What to Consider Before You Sell
A home’s curb appeal is crucial, because it can be the first thing buyers notice about a home. Realtors rated exterior projects among the most valuable home improvement projects in the 2014 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report. “With many factors to consider such as, deciding what remodeling projects to undertake can be a difficult decision for homeowners,” stated NAR President Steve Brown. “Real Estate professionals know what home features are important to buyers in their area, but a home’s curb appeal is always critical since it’s the first impression for potential buyers. That’s why exterior replacement projects offer the greatest bang for the buck. Projects such as entry door . . . and window replacements can recoup homeowners more than 78 percent of costs upon resale.” For instance, a backup generator may cost $11,441. The resale value is $13,031; the recoup value to the Seller is 113.9%. For regional project data, see www.costvsvalue.com. Perhaps we could sit down together to consider your options at this time. Call me today to list your property. View my listing presentation online at www.ZonaHorton.com. Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge. Though many patients have traditional surgery for these “complex polyps,” Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologists are using new tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called “endoscopic mucosal resection,” or EMR. An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. “Mucosal” refers to the tissue of the colon, and “resection” means surgical removal.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
“Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. After a follow-up visit, patients can return to their regular physicians. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-to-treat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.”

of Marriage are often surprised to learn how much personal financial information they must reveal. The laws of this state require complete financial disclosure. Most people get overwhelmed with this requirement, since it can be very time consuming. Since Florida is a “No Fault” state, the primary area of dispute between a husband and wife is usually financial. The following is a list of the financial information required pursuant to Florida law. All parties MUST complete a Financial Affidavit. This Affidavit list a party’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. It is a sworn document, signed under oath by the client, swearing to its truthfulness. A financial affidavit must be filed in all dissolution proceedings, even in the most simplified uncontested matter.

In addition to the financial affidavit, certain documentation must also be exchanged between the parties within approximately six weeks from the date of filing. If it is a simplified divorce this requirement can be waived by both parties. The Financial Affidavits must be produced however. The documents that are required include: ▸▸ Income tax returns ▸▸ Pay stubs for the past three months ▸▸ Statement of income ▸▸ Loan applications and financial statements prepared during the preceding 12 months ▸▸ Deeds, leases and promissory notes executed during the past 12 months ▸▸ Checking account statements for the past three months ▸▸ Bank statements (other than checking) for the past 12 months ▸▸ Brokerage account statements for the last 12 months ▸▸ The most recent statements showing value of retirement accounts, profit sharing or deferred compensation accounts ▸▸ Life insurance documentation ▸▸ Credit card statements for the past three months The above list is just a partial list of what might be required. Requests often require documents dating back three years. It is not unusual that clients often become quite anxious when assigned the task of gathering this information. Here are a few words of advice: ▸▸ Do not wait for the last minute to gather these items. Time deadlines are extremely important and any delays could result in sanctions. ▸▸ Don’t try and do everything at once. Give yourself enough time to “pace yourself”. ▸▸ Be as accurate as possible in filling out all Financial Affidavits. Please remember that it is a sworn document and your answers (if incorrect) can be used against you. ▸▸ Do not ignore items or questions you feel are not relevant. If you have an attorney, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek his/her advise. It can make this task a lot less stressful for all concerned. The law firm of Evan H. Pick Your Poison: Thumbsucking or Pacifier Use By Dr. Maria Grosman
A
long with many other parents , you may be
concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking, or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security. Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws, as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit.

One common effect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite”. This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life. We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils”. We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7. Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd., on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. What Homeowners Need to Know about Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
A
fter a two year effort, Florida legislators approved a new
foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and, instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment. In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.
