Happy Mother’s Day!
T
he month of May has arrived.
FCATs are over and the end of the school year is in sight. The sun is hotter and the pool is getting warmer. Summer vacations and camps are on the horizon. This is also the month to recognize mothers for the sacrifices and dedication they show us every day. From the time we are born our mothers are there to care for us, pamper us and console us when needed. Endless hours are spent nursing boo-boo’s, helping with homework, driving to and from school and activities, cleaning up after us, and worrying about our future. Now it is time to pamper them. Give mom some flowers. Treat her to a nice meal. Purchase a special gift. Most of all, don’t forget to offer a heartfelt “Thank You.” A hug and a kiss go a long way too. This month, our team of editors, account representatives, graphic designers, photographers and support staff is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of our sister publication, Our City Weston. We are proud that our five local community news magazines reach 100,000 homes and businesses throughout Southwest Broward every month. Our award-winning editorials, which allow us to spotlight inspiring individuals and community organizations, continue to inform, educate and enrich the lives of our readers in Weston, Davie/Cooper City/ Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Plantation. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

31st Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo Offers Quality Family Time By Debby Teich

fishing with his father in Davie and has maintained that same tradition with his own children. “My father and I had some great talks while we were fishing,” said Dave. “We also spent many days just enjoying each other’s company, without any conversation at all. I feel very fortunate that I have experienced the same thing with my own two boys. Once a month, they trade their Xbox’s for fishing rods and we have a great time together.” On June 8, he and his children will join hundreds of local fisherman for the 31st Annual Take-AKid Fishin’ Rodeo, at Wolf Lake Park, 5400 SW 76th Ave. in Davie. The Rodeo is an opportunity for kids to leave their electronics behind and spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends. The $9 fee to participate includes lunch and bait (while supplies last). The first 250 kids to register will also receive a cap that they can wear while they are fishing. Only live red worms can be used as bait. Extra live red worms will be available for sale (while supplies last) or you can bring your own.

Kids need to bring their own fishing poles. Once families find a spot on the lake, they are permitted to fish from 9 to 11am. The kids will be divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. All ages must be accompanied by an adult. When they catch a fish, they bring it to the judges table, where a member of Everglades Bass Anglers will help to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Prizes will be awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight) in the following categories: the most fish caught, the longest bass caught, the longest fish caught (not a bass), the most unusual catch, and sportsmanship. Some of the prizes include fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. Registration begins at 7:30am on the morning of the event only. Kids must bring their own fishing poles. Foundation
ver the last few years many TAG USA families have been generous to donate food items, toys and money to support the efforts of the TAG USA Foundation. The charity was founded by Marissa Zoldan, a two-time cancer survivor herself, to battle the effects of cancer and support families that become afflicted with poverty or homelessness. Under Marissa’s guidance the TAG USA Foundation is organizing fundraisers and collecting donations not only to find a cure against cancer, but also to financially and emotionally support the families of cancer victims, which all to often are forced into a financial crisis due to the horrendous medical expenses associated with cancer treatment. Many families lose their income, their savings or their homes due to the costs of surgeries, treatments and medications. TAG USA Gymnastics recently hosted a Trampoline & Tumbling competition with 150 competing athletes from around Florida. TAG USA Gymnastics owners, Marissa and Michael Zoldan, took a portion of the entry fees and donated $1,500 to the Foundation. By partnering with Kids in Distress the charity holds annual toy drives and food donations to help under-privileged kids struck by poverty and homelessness. The current food drive will be able to accept donations until the end of May. Please check the www.TagGymnastics.com website for upcoming donation opportunities. Davie to Honor Veterans on Memorial Day by Debby Teich
F
or more than 40 years , Davie families have been gathering for the Annual
Memorial Day Parade and Service to pay their respects to the men and women who died while serving in the military. On May 27, the Scoutmasters Camporee Committee South Florida Council and the Town of Davie will present the event once again. It is a great way to spend time with the family and pay homage to the Veterans. The festivities will begin with the Memorial Day Parade at 10am. The streets will be lined with patriotic people waving their American flags and dressed in red, white and blue. Approximately 1,500 people will participate in the parade, including scouts, schools, local organizations and businesses, Davie Police and Fire Rescue, military organizations, local politicians and more. The parade will proceed down Davie Rd., beginning at SW 39th St and ending at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Following the parade, at 11am, a Memorial Service will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Participants will show their support for our soldiers and acknowledge the sacrifice they have made and are making to ensure the country’s freedom. Soldiers who fought in each of the different wars will be recognized during a moving ceremony that includes a 21 Gun Salute. A keynote speaker will talk about the meaning of Memorial Day. Flags will be available prior to the service for $1. During the service, the public can place the flags on Veteran’s grave markers. “It is always a very emotional event,” said Jack Daugherty, 2014 Scoutmasters Camporee Chief & 2013 Memorial Day Chairman. Since many of the audience members are children, they may not personally know someone who has fought in the military. “It is important for Scouts and other youth to be aware of the magnitude of the sacrifice made by millions of Americans who died guarding our precious liberties and way of life,” said Jack. Southwest Ranches Offers Scholarships By Debby Teich
S
outhwest ranches residents who plan to continue their edu -
cation beyond high school now have an opportunity to get some financial assistance. The Southwest Ranches Education Advisory Board, in conjunction with The Town of Southwest Ranches, will be awarding scholarships to deserving students. The deadline to apply is May 31. “It is important for us to support our young people,” said Juanita Romance, Deputy Town Clerk and Advisory Board Liaison. “They are our future. We are proud to be part of their success.” One of the Board’s goals is to assist the town with continued education. For the past two years, members have been working diligently to develop a scholarship program. This is the first year that the program is offered. The decision will be based on a weighted scale that will include school and non-school activities, service hours, work experience and GPA, an essay of 250-300 words, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation (faculty member and community member/ employer). The scholarships will be awarded on June 27, at the Town Council Meeting. Scholarship monies will be awarded once enrollment has been confirmed in a postsecondary, Vocational/Technical Institution, or Community/Junior College. It can be used for tuition, books, and related fees. The application is posted on the Town’s website, www.southwestranches. org. Residents must: be under the age of 25 years old, have been a resident of Southwest Ranches the last two years, have served 20 volunteer hours to the town in the last year, have a current “weighted” GPA of 2.5 or higher, and submit an application, reference letters, transcript, and SAT and or ACT scores (if available) to Town Hall by the deadline. Last month, the Town held a picnic at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park to raise money for the scholarship fund. Friends, families and neighbors
enjoyed a variety of foods from the Food Truck Round Ups, music by D.J. Flash, a silent auction, and a petting zoo from Animal Kingdom. All proceeds benefited the Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund. For information, visit www.southwestranches.org; call 954-434-0008 or send an email to jromance@ swranches.org.

Vote on Your Favorite Recipe at the Chili Cook-Off By Debby Teich
Some like their chili filled with meat, while others prefer it vegetarian. On May 18, area residents will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe at the Aster Knight Parks Foundation’s 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser. It will be held at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park, 5840 SW 148 Avenue, from noon to 5:30pm. “It is a great way to spend the day with friends, family and neighbors,” said Rick Bell, AKPF board member. “Although the park is equestrian by design, it is also the perfect place to have a fun event.” Approximately 15 contestants will participate in the cook-off. They “It is a great way to spend include the day with friends, family several local and neighbors,” said Rick restauBell, AKPF board member. rants, as well as individuals in the area. There will be Asian chili, Cincinnati chili (beanless), and even a Vegan chili. For only $5, people can buy a card that entitles them to sample all of the recipes and vote for their favorite one. The winner will receive a plaque that says “Chili Champion of Southwest Ranches.” The event will also include live music and kid-
friendly entertainment, such as a bounce house, pony rides and a petting zoo. The local volunteer fire department will be grilling hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken. There will also be a bake sale. The proceeds will benefit the Town of Southwest Ranches parks through the AKPF, a 501 3 c charitable organization. Southwest Ranches’ inaugural council member Aster Knight started the foundation through his own love of nature and the urge to preserve and protect the Town’s natural areas. The Foundation’s mission is to “raise funds through public and private partnerships for parks, trails, and green space projects within the town of Southwest Ranches to further the Town’s motto of ‘Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle’ and provide a superior quality of life for the Town’s residents and visitors alike.” Sharon Blake plans to attend the cook-off. “There is nothing better than a bowl of chili on a cold day,” said Sharon. “I am excited to try all of the different recipes. I am hoping I can find something I like well enough to make at home.” For information or to enter the cook-off, send an email to akpf@southwestranches.org.

Beat Belly Fat – Hormone Optimization
Present
By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
L
ast month we talked about how belly fat is a
key indicator of a hormonal imbalance. The hormonal imbalance may be one or more of the following: high Cortisol, low DHEA and low Testosterone. We zoned in on the importance of diet to promote fat burning and the maintenance of blood sugar to decrease cravings. In addition, we discussed Cortisol and the correlation of stress causing increased weight gain and flabbiness. This month, we will talk about developing a program that will encompass checking the levels of both DHEA and Testosterone. Even with the best exercise and diet, without hormonal balance it will be extremely difficult to lose the weight and keep it off!
DHEA
DHEA is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands, like Cortisol. It is a precursor to the hormones Testosterone and Estrogen and combats the negative effects of Cortisol. As we discussed last month, elevated levels of Cortisol can wreck havoc on the body by increasing its ability to store fat. It is important that DHEA only be replaced when a deficiency has been diagnosed because taking excessive amounts can be harmful. DHEA levels are best measured through saliva testing. This hormone not only assists in boosting libido, motivation and energy but also aids in our ability to lose fat and gain muscle mass.
Testosterone
Testosterone levels decline as a result of aging, obesity, and stress. Both men and women have Testosterone and this hormone is essential to creating lean body mass/ muscle. In fact, research conducted at the University of Washington demonstrated men with low levels of Testosterone were more likely to have increased overall body fat, especially belly fat. When levels of Testosterone decline, estrogen levels rise, especially in men, which not only increases overall fat gain but also in the area of the chest – known as “man boobs.” The good news is that those with low levels of Testosterone improved their overall fat loss with the supplementation of Testosterone. Other signs that may be experienced with low Testosterone levels include fatigue, decreased mental clarity, sex drive, stamina, and motivation. In today’s age with increasing stressors whether mental, physiological or environmental we are seeing a decline in these levels earlier in life. This is discerning considering that low Testosterone has been linked to depression, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Some natural ways to boost your Testosterone levels can include a well balanced diet with sufficient protein intake, exercise, and optimal Zinc levels. Even the best diet, exercise and optimal Zinc levels often times may not be enough to achieve optimal levels of Testosterone. With a simple blood test, your Testosterone levels can be determined and proper treatment with Bio Identical Hormone supplementation can put you back in balance. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, IV Nutrition Therapy and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Their practice Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. Visit their website at www.BellissimoMedical.com.

Pickleball Makes Its Debut in Davie By Debby Teich
I
t has only been a few weeks since Pickleball was introduced in
the Davie area and it is already a big hit. People of all ages and athletic abilities had an opportunity to try the sport, which combines ping pong, tennis, and badminton. They participated in a demonstration clinic at the Pine Island Park, where a hockey rink has been converted to five Pickleball courts. “Pickleball is so much fun,” said Ruth Dickson, who recently tried the Players must learn a unique set of Pickleball terms, such as sport. Players use a baseball sized whiffle ball and a paddle on a 44X20 foot court, which is smaller than a tennis court. They volley the ball back and forth to score on the opposing team. Players must learn a unique set of Pickleball terms, such as “dillball, flabjack, v0ll3y llama, falafel, oPA! and pickledome.” In 1965, U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum created Pickleball to provide
a sport for the entire family. They named it after Pickles, the family dog that would chase stray balls and then hide in the bushes. Initially, families played Pickleball in their backyards, on driveways, and on residential dead-end streets. In the mid-1970’s, it grew into a game played on a paddle court with formalized rules. Pickleball currently has over Photos: Chuck Roderique 100,000 players in the United States. There is even a USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), as well as tournaments and competitions. The sport has become very popular among active senior adults at community centers, and on high school and college campuses. It is not, however, well known in South Florida. Mitchell Ball is trying to change that. Mitchell is an avid runner, tennis player, swimmer and biker. He recently played the game while vacationing in Orlando and fell in love with it. He became an official ambassador of the sport and has made it his mission to make “Pickleball” a household word in South Florida. In addition to Davie, he has already introduced the game in Tamarac, Ft. Lauderdale, Dania Beach and Oakland Park. “Pickleball is a great sport,” said Mitchell. “Anyone can learn to play. It is challenging and fun, but not too strenuous.” For information, visit www.usapa.org or www.misterpickleball.com.

Dear Friend,
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.”
– J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Cooper City High Basketball Game Raises Money for Scholarship Fund By Debby Teich
T
he staff at Cooper City H igh School , as well as some commu -
nity members, recently played the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams to raise money for the James & Lindsay Layer Scholarship Foundation. The money raised at the event will be used to award scholarships to Cooper City High School athletes. The scholarship was started in memory of two siblings who graduated from Cooper City High School. Both were athletes who died at the age of 19 in separate automobile accidents. James passed away on August 2, 2001. He played football, golf, basketball, baseball and soccer. Lindsay passed away on August 24, 2005. She was a swimmer and also played water polo, basketball, soccer, and softball. Family and friends started the scholarship fund in the siblings’ memory, but it quickly ran out of money. Seven years ago, the school initiated the basketball fundraiser and it has become an annual tradition. Approximately 250 students, community members and alumni typically attend to watch faculty and staff play against the students. During half time, the cheerleaders, dance team, drum line, and others entertain the crowd. The school’s CTV crew films the event and shares it with the rest of the school.

“The game is always a lot of fun and for a great cause,” said Ron Ziccardi, guidance counselor, who has known the family for 20 years and helps organize the event. “We are able to honor James and Lindsay’s memory through the scholarships.” This year’s event raised $3,000. All of the money will be awarded to Cooper City High School senior athletes. To apply, the athletes must complete a questionnaire that asks about the importance of family. The siblings’ mother, DonnaLee Layer, will work with a committee to review the applications and select the winners. The scholarships will be presented this month at Senior Awards Night. “It means a lot to me to be able to keep my children’s memories alive and also help kids who want to go to college,” said DonnaLee. “I am grateful to Debby Eisinger and Principal Wendy Doll for playing every year and showing their support. I am also grateful to Ron Ziccardi for his continued support.”

Cooper City Elementary Students Receive Pocket U.S. Constitutions By Debby Teich
W
hen students at Cooper City E lementary began studying American history, they were already well versed on the U.S. Constitution. In an effort to promote civics education, the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City donated approximately 130 pocket U.S. Constitutions to the school. All of the fifthgrade students and their teachers received one. “This project directly supports and compliments our Social Studies curriculum,” said Assistant Principal Marsha Wagner. “In fifth grade, our students learn how our nation’s Founders developed our system of government and citizenship. The individual U.S. Constitutions allow our students to examine the Constitution as they learn about its significance.” The idea of presenting students with a gift is not new for the Kiwanis. For nearly 100 years, the organization has been donating pocket dictionaries. Members of the Cooper City Club felt that most kids in their public schools had access to dictionaries at home, school or on the Internet, so they searched for an alternative. “We searched for a gift that would be relevant for today’s students, but still promote civic education,” said Bruce Blitman, attorney and member of the Cooper City Kiwanis Club. “By providing the fifth graders with their own personal pocket U.S. Constitutions, our club is hoping to support the teachers’ American history and civics lessons and help the students develop a better understanding and appreciation for this important document and our system of government.” This is the second year that Blitman visited each of the six fifth-grade classes at Cooper City Elementary to present the gifts and talk about the importance of the
Constitution. He also plans to present pocket constitutions to the fifth graders at Griffin Elementary School and Embassy Lakes Elementary School. For information on the Kiwanis, send an email to babmediate@aol.com.

Most Commonly Asked Questions By Evan Baron
D
uring my initial consultation with a prospec-
tive client, I try and educate them as to the basic laws in Florida dealing with a Dissolution of Marriage. After explaining some of the basics, I always inquire as to whether they have any questions. It seems that there are a number of questions which are common to most cases. I thought I would share them with you;
How long does a divorce take?
I explain that every divorce is different, so it is impossible to predict how long any individual case will take. There are number of factors which are out of my control as well. For instance, the particular Judge who is assigned the case may have a great influence on how long the proceedings will last. Each Judge controls his/her own docket and as such some divisions are more “backed up” than others. In some divisions it may take a couple of weeks to schedule a hearing, while in other divisions it may take a couple of months. I have handled simple uncontested dissolutions in about 6 weeks, while more complex cases can last a year or more.
Obviously, the greater amount of issues involved, the longer it will take. Cases that settle by way of a Marital Settlement Agreement will normally conclude quicker than a contested matter, which must be presented to a Judge. If the participants reach an Agreement, then a Final Hearing can be held within about a two week period.
How much will this cost me?

As previously stated, each case is different. Since most Family Law attorneys charge on an hourly basis, the time spent will obviously affect the “bottom line.” It is in most cases impossible to predict how long a case will last and therefore impossible to advise as to the eventual cost. One must remember that in litigation, the time spent is also somewhat controlled by your opposition. When an attorney files his/her “Notice of Appearance,” it requires his/her involvement in all aspects of the case. The more the parties chose to litigate, the more costly their case will be. It is really up to the client as to how much the “bottom line” will be.
I don’t want anything from my spouse. Can I agree to that? The answer is yes and no. A person can waive all of his/her rights if he/she wishes to do so. The only aspect of the case which cannot be waived is child support for any minor children. Florida law will not allow a Final Judgment to be signed without a provision for child support. The rationale is that the support belongs to the children and therefore cannot be waived by the parents. I have found that many individuals are initially prepared to “just walk away” from a long term marriage without obtaining his/her share of property accumulated. It is obviously his/her right to do so, but nobody should ever make a decision based upon emotion. The reason a person should retain an attorney is to insure that decisions that are made are logical and based upon the law. No individual should give up rights that the law provides.
If you have any questions, I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. Call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

New Loan Modification Program Launched in South Florida By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
C
ommunication failure between lender and borrower is the
principal reason why more loan modifications are not successful. After much anticipation, on April 1, 2013, the all new Loss Mitigation Mediation (“LMM”) Program was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts to combat communication failures. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. A similar program was recently launched in Central Florida bankruptcy courts, resulting in an 85% modification success rate. If you are in foreclosure, or behind on your mortgage payments, and have tried to modify your mortgage to no avail, here are the reasons why you should now consider participating in the LMM program.
First, under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled the moment you file your petition. Unlike a traditional loan modification, the LMM program is completely court supervised. This means that a United States federal judge will ensure that your lender “plays by the rules,” that all loan modification negotiations are concluded, and a definitive response to your application is provided within short, established timeframe. In addition, under the LMM program, you will participate in mediation, which is a formal negotiation meeting with a representative from the bank that has full authority to modify your loan, and settle your case. Another unique feature of the LMM program is that it completely eliminates the “lost document” scenario. Anyone that has attempted to modify their home loan has certainly felt the frustration every time their lender claims they never received certain documents, even though they were already sent by the homeowner. Under the LMM program, all required financial documents for a loan modification are uploaded to a single digital portal so that all parties concerned timely receive and have access to the documents in a confidential setting. If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a complete loan modification application, after having received all the necessary documents electronically, the homeowner now has the right to enforce a prompt reply from their lender through the court. Under this new scenario, a United States federal court judge has the authority to impose serious monetary and other sanctions on a lender that fails to timely comply with the LMM program guidelines. In short, the new LMM program is an excellent new alternative for homeowners that provides justice, and evens the playing field in the otherwise unpredictable world of home loan modifications. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Timing Your Child’s First Dental Visit By Dr. Maria Grosman
P
arents are many times surprised to hear our
recommendation for the timing of their child’s first dental visit. We recommend that a child first be seen in the office within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than 1 year. This is precisely what is currently recommended by both the American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as the America Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Some parents hesitate, feeling that their child either does not have enough teeth to clean or would not sit still for a cleaning. This line of thinking is understandable, as most adults associate their own dental visits as being very procedure oriented. If we are not going to the dentist for repair of teeth, it would still be for a cleaning and radiographs (x-rays). However, this same logic does not apply to their very young children. The purpose of this early visit is hopefully for early prevention rather than for treatment. The purpose of the initial visit to the pediatric dentist is to achieve three goals: the establishment of a “dental home,” complete a caries (“cavity”) risk assessment, and to create an individualized plan for the child and family. The “dental home” is defined by the AAPD as the “ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient, inclusive of all aspects of oral health care delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated, and family-centered way.” In other words, it establishes a place to go for information, advice and care when needed. The next part of the visit is the caries risk assessment, which allows the dentist to really understand your child’s disposition to getting cavities. This is mostly done by taking a history of not only the child but the primary care giver as well. Information gathered ranges from dietary intake of sugars and fluoride to feeding patterns and oral hygiene schedule. This information is then used to make an individualized plan as to the frequency of visits as well as education to be provided to parents for guidance. Just for a moment, let’s consider what is at stake. Current reports are showing that 1 in 4 children have at least one cavity by age 4. These early childhood caries (cavities) can occur as early as age 2. When this occurs, it is many time not possible to treat the infection without traumatizing the child as they may not be mature enough to allow the needed procedure. In such cases, sedation dentistry may be used to limit any negative associations with the dental office. This can be very costly monetarily and very stressful for the parents emotionally. Early education and treatment of oral habits may also limit or eliminate the need of orthodontic treatment as well. It is my personal belief that introducing children to new experiences in a warm, friendly, and fun environment will only set them up for more positive experiences in the future. Although on the outside is may seem that we are only brushing the toddlers teeth on their first visit, we feel that we are helping to set them up for a lifetime of good oral health. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. n 2011, I wrote an article that said, “M ost think
that a Real Estate professional wants to encourage her clients to buy versus rent, because it is more financially beneficial to the agent. There will be circumstances when renting is truly the best decision at the time. . . . However, there comes a time in the big economic picture where it is more advantageous for the client to step confidently into the shoes of home ownership.” What about 2013? According to HomeServices Lending, an affiliate of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, a thirty-year conventional rate loan with 20% ($70,000) down on a $350,000 home would be a loan in the amount of $280,000. With the current interest rate of 3.625% / 3.728%, your monthly payment would be $1,276.95. This does not include insurance or taxes; however, you can see why we Real Estate professionals encourage home ownership. Any rise in mortgage rates affects buying power. Our industry is trying to educate potential buyers as to the shifting rent-versus-buy dynamic.

Remember -- just some of the benefits of owning a home may include: ▸▸ Mortgage interest deduction ▸▸ Property tax deduction ▸▸ Homestead Exemption (an added benefit) ▸▸ Deductible home-buying expenses How much rent is tax deductible? Where are the interest rates headed? No one can know for sure. According to Steve Harney (KCMBLOG.COM), “The Fed has been artificially holding rates down to stimulate the economy. However, as the economy improves, many experts expect rates to creep up. HSH Associates, the nation’s largest publisher of mortgage and consumer loan information, recently explained: “The stronger the economy becomes, the higher rates may grind; the Federal Reserve is keeping them low to goose the economy, but an economy responding to the Fed’s medicine will soon see less of a need for it in order to function. If not otherwise manipulated, higher rates are the natural result of a growing economy, as rising demand for available credit supply and concerns about inflation allow costs to rise.” The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) agrees. They were quoted in HousingWire late last year regarding their thoughts on where rates would be headed in 2013. “After reaching record lows in 2012, mortgage rates are expected to creep up slowly in 2013, the Mortgage Bankers Association predicted.” According to Facts & Trends™, inventory is low (down 25% from last year) which is forcing prices to rise. The average price of homes is up 27.2% over this time last year. The average sold price is up over 10%. The pended sales are up 14.2% over last year, which is further an indication of recovery in our marketplace. Our current 5 months of supply will force the prices even higher and are causing multiple bids in the Davie-Cooper City markets. Are you a renter still on the fence? pet of the Month
“Cooter” Cooter is a 19-monthold English Mastiff, who weighs 130 pounds. He was named after the show “Dukes of Hazzard.” His favorite people are Bodie and Abby. His favorite toy is a piece of rope, which he uses when he plays tug of war with the kids. Cooter loves taking a nap on the trampoline. He likes playing frisbee with the kids and loves to catch it in the air. He doesn’t like when there is a storm, because he is afraid of thunder and loud noise. Cooter was last seen at the Mud Dog Race in Davie. He waited at the finish line for Bodie and Bodie’s mom, Michelle.

Adult Flat Foot Deformity By Robert H. Sheinberg, DPM
A
dult flat foot deformity, also known as
Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction, is a common ailment. It is the result of progressive lowering of the arch secondary to weakness or tearing of the tendons and ligaments that support it. Here is a closer look at the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatment options.
Causes: Get covered for $49/mo.!
▸▸ Inflammation of a tendon on the inside of the ankle and foot from overuse (uphill running) or wearing excessive flat or worn shoes. ▸▸ Rupture or tearing of the major tendon (posterior tibial) supporting the arch. ▸▸ Weakening or tearing of the ligaments supporting the arch and foot joints. ▸▸ Connective tissue disease (i.e. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and Reiter’s syndrome). ▸▸ Trauma to the foot or ankle (i.e. bad sprain turning the foot down and out). ▸▸ Flatfoot deformity that progresses over time. ▸▸ Associated with diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

oday, more than ever , advances in technology
have made it easier to stay in touch and search for information at any time and place. While having this type of access at our fingertips makes life easier, driving at the same time can yield devastating consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 3,000 people are killed every year from distraction-affected crashes. With more than 300 million wireless customers in the United States and the growing number of services designed to keep people constantly connected, distracted driving has become a common occurrence and a national problem.
Distracted driving is defined as any activity that diverts a person’s attention away from the road. It encompasses three main distractions: ▸▸ manual – taking your hands off the wheel ▸▸ visual – taking your eyes off the road ▸▸ cognitive – taking your mind off driving Common distractions include sending or receiving text messages or e-mails, eating or drinking, reading, grooming, talking on the phone or using other handheld electronic devices such as videos or GPS navigation. They all endanger the safety of drivers and other motorists. The most alarming of these distractions is texting, as it involves all three types of distractions – manual, visual and cognitive – at once. Texting while driving is dangerous! In the time it takes to look down and send a text, it is estimated that you have traveled the length of a football field. Shockingly, statistics also show that texting while driving is equally as dangerous as operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Like alcohol and driving, texting and driving do not mix! Earlier this year, I met with State Senator Maria Sachs to show my support to end distracted driving. She proposed a bill that would make it a moving violation for drivers to use anything but hands-free devices behind the wheel. I firmly believe tougher legislation is necessary, but it will not eliminate the problem. Our efforts must include education and awareness to address the blatant dangers associated with distracted driving. According to the NHSTA, the highest incidence of distracted driving involves young drivers under the age of 20. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue has developed a program to educate our more than 62,000 teenagers enrolled in Broward County public schools. The program includes a public service announcement written and directed by local high school seniors. It demonstrates the inherent dangers of this common practice, specifically texting and emailing. I believe this peer-to peer influence will be one of the greatest components of this program. There is no doubt distracted driving poses a great threat to people traveling on our roadways. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is committed to combating this problem and helping bring this dangerous trend to an end. Every time you drive, before you reach for your cell phone, I ask you to take a minute and think – is this message really that important? Turn off the phone or put it out of reach. Don’t take chances with your life or the life of anyone else. Stay safe! For more information about BSO’s efforts to end distracted driving, call 954-831-8902.
