Don’t Forget Father’s Day!
I
t is hard to believe that J une
is already here! The school year flew by and now it’s time to enjoy summer vacation. That means no more homework, no getting up early to rush to class, and no running around to afterschool activities. Summer is the time to relax and enjoy unscheduled time together with family and friends. While mothers worldwide had their recognition last month, fathers, who also play an integral role in bringing up a child, are often a bit forgotten. This month, as we celebrate Father’s Day, it is time to show our fathers how much we appreciate all their hard work, their dedication and their sacrifices over the years. More than likely it was your dad who taught you to play catch, ride a two-wheeler, maybe even drive a car. Today’s dads are active dads, who are building close-knit relationships with their sons and daughters. Now is the time to show your gratitude. Don’t forget to say “Thank you, Dad” from your heart. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

cranes and other construction trucks, senior shuttle buses, utility pump trucks, SWAT trucks, and much more. Albert Kennedy brought his four sons, ages 3 to 8, to the event last year and plans to attend again. “They have been talking about the event all year long,” said Albert. “Every time we pass a truck on the road they want me to stop it, so they can climb inside. They loved talking to all of the drivers, especially the rescue personnel. I enjoy the event just as much as my kids do. I cannot imagine a better way to spend Father’s Day weekend.” Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles. Children must be accompanied by an adult. result, the needs of the child’s siblings are often overlooked. The Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO) recently held a Sib Shop Reunion at Equus for Humanity, an equine therapy facility in Southwest Ranches, to help the siblings address some of the issues they might be facing. The event was offered through JAFCO’s Developmental Disability program. Fifteen children, from 6 to 12 years old, who have brothers or sisters with special needs, brushed, walked and rode the horses. They had an opportunity to make friends and in a fun, social, and recreational environment, where they could feel comfortable sharing their “good” and “not so good” feelings about their siblings. “When something happens to one person, it affects the whole family,” said Linda Sachs, LCSW and Developmental Disabilities Program Coordinator at JAFCO.
“Siblings need to understand that they are not alone and can get support from their peers. We teach them coping strategies and to voice their concerns and feelings of pride and love for their siblings.” The non-profit organization provides a continuum of programs and services for at-risk children and their families including: Children’s Emergency Shelter, Group Home Program, Foster Care and Adoption, Family Preservation Program, and much more. Three years ago, it expanded its services to include a Developmental Disabilities Program, which provides counseling, case management, and support groups for parents and sibling. Families can also receive education and behavior training. In early 2014, JAFCO will expand its Developmental Disabilities program with the opening of a state-of-the-art Respite and Family Resource Center in Sunrise. The comprehensive, one-stop Center will serve children and young adults, from birth through 21 years, with special needs. It will provide a continuum of coordinated care that will eliminate fragmented services, which often require traveling to many locations to receive treatment. Its quality family support and child enrichment services will help families balance the demands of family, home and work. For information, visit www.JAFCO.org or call Linda Sachs at 954-749-7230.

How Is Functional Medicine Different? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
F
unctional M edicine , also known as Anti -aging
Medicine, focuses on the art of detecting, preventing, and treating age related diseases. Primarily, the Functional Medicine’s goals are to slow down the human aging process and optimize wellness by integrating traditional, oriental, and the so called “alternative” medical practices – often using therapeutic and natural methods. As practitioners of Functional Medicine, we see the patient as a whole. We look into balancing one’s body by naturally and properly replacing hormones, minerals, and vitamins. Each patient’s treatment is unique, since no one is exactly the same shape, or has the same degrees of stressors or medical history. Below we list some of the high yield supplements and minerals that we prescribe. They have been scientifically proven to improve health and prevent disease.

It is like a key that revs your body’s fat-melting system! ▸▸ Goes beyond building stronger bones by also keeping them healthy ▸▸ Can help prevent several types of cancer, including breast, colon, and skin ▸▸ Helps prevent cardiovascular events. Remember: if you are menopausal, you are already at a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes ▸▸ Helps regulate blood pressure, reduces stress and tension, and improves skin overall health
Glutathione
It is a potent antioxidant naturally occurring in every cell of the body. Some of its functions and benefits include: ▸▸ Increases energy ▸▸ Clearer thinking ▸▸ Reduces wastes and toxins in the body ▸▸ Increases immunity levels ▸▸ Prevents or reduces the effects of over 69 common diseases ▸▸ Minimizes the aging effects
Testosterone
▸▸ Low testosterone is associated with excess abdominal fat, loss of insulin sensitivity, and atherosclerosis ▸▸ Low testosterone is usually also correlated to an elevation of estrogen, which in men it translates to higher risk of stroke (in fact double), and higher incidences of coronary artery disease, benign prostate enlargement or prostate cancer ▸▸ Osteoporosis, muscle wasting and chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders are also linked to this hormone deficiency As you can see, these are just a few examples of the variety of supplements and minerals that must be considered when replenishing and optimizing your wellbeing. TAG USA Gymnastics Brings Home Back-to-Back State Championships
I
f you want to be the best, you need to train with the best. That’s why so many young gymnasts are joining TAG USA Gymnastics in Weston. Owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan created structured classes for beginners, added the best equipment, and built the largest and most comfortable facility, putting TAG USA in a class by itself.
Even more impressive are the back-to-back State Championships and incredible success of both the girls and boys gymnastics teams. In 2011 and 2012, TAG USA won the Florida State Championships for USAG Level 3 and Level 4 girls gymnastics. TAG USA also won the 2012 State Championship for USAG Prep-Optionals with five members selected to Team Florida. Along with many individual State and Regional Champions, TAG USA had its first Boys Regional Champion and National Qualifier this year. TAG USA is much more than a training powerhouse with championship programs. It is a full-service gymnastics center built upon the success of its exceptional recreational gymnastics program. From beginner classes to team, each class has a specific lesson plan and coaches evaluate each gymnast by skill. Owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan explain why this high-level training coupled with the gym’s award-winning summer camp, popular open gym sessions, and fabulous birthday parties, make TAG USA the “place to be.”
To what do you attribute TAG USA’s success and growth? Marissa: It all begins with parents signing up their young children in our classes. Our gym has a lot of space, equipment and we use qualified coaches to teach our beginner athletes the proper way of learning gymnastics. TAG USA has grown because parents believe in our program, love our facility, and see their children’s success. Michael: That success is evident if you look around the gym at all the trophies, including our back-to-back State Championships.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishments? Marissa: The success of our teams is a great accomplishment. We bought the gym four years ago with the goal to build a program that emulates the top gyms found in Central Florida and the Midwest. With State Champs, Regional Champs, Team Florida members, and National Qualifiers, we can be considered the best. The success proves that our class programs and team training methods work very well. Michael: This would not be possible without proper planning. We hired experienced coaches and managers who
organized our classes and created convenient schedules. Parents are very happy with our program and, more importantly, our gymnasts are learning and feel good about themselves.
What is the foundation of your training program?
Marissa: First, we train as a USAG gym. Second, our coaches safely train our athletes for higher skills and proper technique. As a Marissa and Michael Zoldan former Elite gymnast, I know that athletes succeed easier with inner core strength, proper conditioning, and repetition of basic skills. Our excellent coaching staff encourages gymnasts to progress at their own pace while learning higher skills. At TAG USA, we encourage progress.
What distinguishes TAG USA from other gyms? Michael: Most dif-
ferent is that, as owners, Marissa and I are always at the gym, talking with families and making sure that parents and children are satisfied. Anyone who walks into this gym is impressed. Our gym is 38,000 square-feet with plenty of comfortable waiting areas for parents and siblings. We also invested in proper equipment. Boys have all of the necessary equipment to learn all of the events in gymnastics. Tumbling and trampoline classes have five trampolines, three tumble tracks, and three spring floors at their disposal. Our huge training space and state-of-the-art equipment allows athletes to train more without waiting in lines. Marissa: TAG USA is known as the “Home for Champions” and we want all children to feel like champions. We award all recreational class children with a medal at the end of their session because we want to develop every child’s self esteem as well as their gymnastics skills. For convenience, all classes run at the same time so siblings can be in separate classes during the same hour.
In addition to gymnastics, what other programs do you offer?
Michael: TAG USA’s Saturday Night Open Gym allows kids to hang out, flip in the pit, and play sports, all closely supervised by our TAG coaches, while their parents go out for date night. Marissa: Our birthday parties are the most popular party packages around. Families get an hour and fifteen minutes of play time in the gym, including use of four giant inflatables, plus one of our three private party rooms for cake time.
Your Summer Sports Camp is also quite popular. What do you have planned this summer? Michael: Our Summer Sports Camp was
voted Best Summer Camp of 2012. For boys, we have indoor basketball and soccer in addition to the pit-flipping and trampoline flying. Our camp director makes sure that campers have non-stop action. Parents love our camp because they know their children are constantly active, safe, secure and happy. We perform background checks and fingerprint all of our camp coaches. Marissa: We offer ten weeks of summer camp with flexible options. You can buy a one day experience ($45) or one week package ($195). You can also purchase camp packages for five to ten weeks with significant discounts. We also do not charge a registration fee. TAG USA has a half day Preschool Camp for three and four year olds. Our Senior Camp is for ages five and older. Camp groups are divided gender and by age. TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. TAG USA has championship competitive girls and boys gymnastics teams, cheer team, and a trampoline and tumbling team. For more information or to register for classes, birthday parties or summer camp, please call (954) 384-9393 or visit www.TagGymnastics.com.

Today, the Davie Arena on the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds is a 72,000 sq. ft. covered facility with a seating capacity of 5,500. It hosts concerts, the Davie Pro Rodeo Series and many other events. Broward League of Cities Grants Scholarships to Cooper City Students By Debby Teich
T
wo Cooper City high school seniors will have to pay a little
less for their college education. Brian Mazur of William T. McFatter Technical High School and Matthew Johnston of Cooper City High School were selected to receive the Broward League of Cities’ annual Scholarship for Government Studies. Every year, the League awards four $1,000 scholarships to Broward County seniors who are enrolled in a public or charter school and plan to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field at a college or university. The scholarships are made possible by Broward County’s elected officials and associate members, who make personal contributions through raffle purchases and donations to the scholarship fund. Coral Springs Charter School’s Carina Tenaglia and McArthur High School’s Luis Callejas also won awards. “We are thrilled to support these outstanding students’ educational endeavors and believe they each have the potential to become extraordinary government leaders,” said Broward League of Cities President Bobby DuBose. Brian will graduate with an unweighted GPA of 3.97, as well as a long Matthew Johnston and Brian Mazur list of awards and accomplishments. He will be attending Duke University in the fall. He is considering majors in Public Policy, Political Science and/or Economics and may attend law school. Eventually, he would like to run for an elected office at the local or state level. He recalls seeing the Mayor and other elected officials at the grocery store and local events. Like them, he wants to remain in close touch with the needs of his constituents, so he can make a bigger difference in their lives. “During my time as an Ambassador to the Broward League of Cities, I have learned that hundreds of people working at the local and state levels are on the ground in our cities and towns every day trying to improve the conditions and the welfare of everyone, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity,” said Brian. “Knowing that people are working to ensure my community is a safe place to live, work and go to school inspires me to do the same for others.” Mathew will graduate with an unweighted GPA of 3.84, nearly 900 service hours and an impressive list of accolades. He will be attending New York University in the fall and plans to major in Political Science. Ultimately, he would like to pursue a career in politics at the national level. Mathew became involved in the community at a young age, by participating in city clean ups and volunteering at homeless shelters. “Involvement truly fulfills me,” said Mathew. “I feel that it is my duty, not an obligation. Seeing people who were less fortunate than me made me realize that it was important to think of others.” Mathew continued to remain active throughout high school. During the 2012 election, he worked for the grassroots campaign to re-elect President Obama and canvassed neighborhoods to encourage people to vote. It was also his first time voting. “I pride myself in being a leader in my community, because I know that I can make a difference for the better someday,” said Mathew. “I can not only help to make a better world, but I can also help many people in the process.” Mathew says that the key to his success has always been his “heart” and “passion.” For more information, visit browardleague.org.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”

Dear Friend,
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.”
– J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. hen students at G riffin E lementary began studying American history, they were already well versed on the U.S. Constitution. In an effort to promote civics education, the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City donated approximately 100 pocket U.S. Constitutions to the school. All of the fifthgrade students and their teachers received one. The idea of presenting students with a gift is not new for the Kiwanis. For nearly 100 years, the organization has been donating pocket dictionaries. Members of the Cooper City Club felt that most kids in their public schools had access to dictionaries at home, school or on the Internet, so they searched for an alternative. “We searched for a gift that would be relevant for today’s students, but still

He is also hoping to present them at Embassy Lakes Elementary School. For information on the Kiwanis, send an email to babmediate@aol.com.

They were not ready to make a full-time commitment. Weight loss is at least 50% attitude. Do NOT start a weight loss program unless you are ready. ADVICE: Do some serious soul searching and figure out what your personal motivation is to shedding the extra weight. The motivation has to come from you. Then, you need to recharge that motivation everyday if you are going to make it. In this case, short term goals are more important than long term goals.

You expect miracles. You have unreasonable expectations in regard to how much weight you should be losing. You are going to end up very disappointed and fall off the wagon. ADVICE: I know you are looking for that quick fix. It does not exist, even if that infomercial says you will lose 20 pounds in one hour. Snap out of it. If you stay slow and steady, you will be on your way to fantastic end results.
Reason #3
You’re on a ridiculous plan. If you’re following an extreme weight loss plan (i.e. the cabbage soup diet) where it does not remotely resemble normal eating, there is a good chance you will fail. You may lose some weight, but I guarantee it is back on within a week. ADVICE: A good food plan is based on healthy foods that keep you satisfied and energized, not cranky. This food adjustment should be a launching pad for long term lifestyle change.
Reason #4
You had a breakdown and ate two pieces of cake and started falling apart. You tells you, “I already ruined everything, so I might as well give up.” ADVICE: Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Instead, shake it off and get right back on track at your very next meal…..or the next day.

You failed to include proper fat burning, metabolism- raising exercises in the mix. ADVICE: A fast metabolism is critical to burning fat and managing body weight. The more muscle you use, the more calories you burn. Intervals on the treadmill and multi and single joint weigh training are the best. Ellen’s Ultimate Workout Weight loss Program begins May 11. I Thought My Divorce Was Over! By Evan Baron
T
here is a saying often used in family law,
which is that “if you have children, you are never divorced.” I repeat that saying several times each week to both existing and new clients. Even after a divorce is finalized, there are still potential problems which may arise. If you have the opportunity to read a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage, the Court will retain jurisdiction in the matter. That is to ensure that if issues arise, the parties have the legal right to petition the court for relief. There are some issues, however, which cannot be re-litigated. A large percentage of my practice is devoted to “post judgment matters,” such as child support, alimony, custody, visitation and parental relocation. All of the above matters can be addressed by the court if there is a failure to comply with an existing court order or of due to a “substantial change in circumstance” one of the parties is seeking a modification. For instance, if the primary residential parent is not receiving his/her child support, then an enforcement action can be brought. If one of the parents loses his/her job through no fault of their own, then a modification to reduce either child support or alimony can be filed. If one of the parents is not allowing scheduled visitation or if due to a change in circumstance the visitation schedule must be changed, then a modification proceeding can be filed.

Of course, not every issue can be re-litigated. The equitable distribution of assets and debts is a matter which cannot be disturbed after the Final Judgment, unless the parties themselves reach an agreement or one of the parties can prove fraud or coercion in the original agreement. In addition, child support cannot be increased unless the party seeking an increase can show a substantial change in income, which would result in an increase of at least $50 per month or 15% over the existing monthly payment. Of course, one can never attempt to overturn an agreement simply because he/she has changed their minds and now feels it is perhaps unfair. I always try and tie up all lose ends when finalizing an agreement between the parties. The last thing either party wants is continued litigation, which means continued stress and continued attorney’s fees. Sometimes a matter can be resolved by the parties simply discussing the matter. I am always amazed at how often issues can be resolved by a simple phone call, letter or e-mail. If both parties truly want what is best for their child, then a compromise should not be so difficult. Unfortunately, some parties wish to continue the litigation based upon emotional issues. This is never a good idea and, more often than not, it is the children who suffer. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed? By Dr. P. Stuart Seider
adults, it is considered the “Age of Wisdom.” It is a time when removal of third molars becomes a “rite of passage.” That is why we use the term wisdom teeth for third molars. Not everyone must have their wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes wisdom teeth erupt normally into a person’s mouth and are perfectly functional. Others might have impacted teeth, which should be evaluated and a determination made as to the necessity of their removal. Some of us do not even develop wisdom teeth. I like to call these people “New Man.” As time has passed, man’s diet has changed from a tough grinding diet of meats and uncooked foods to a softer diet of cooked and processed foods. The need for multiple molars has been “genetically” reduced. Hence, from once having four molars, we are down to three and in some cases two.
As evolution has progressed and the average size of a human’s jaw has decreased, the space needed for a full set of 32 teeth has been diminished. In those cases where there is inadequate jaw length, the wisdom teeth virtually do not fit and can become “impacted.” They become wedged between another tooth and the jaw bone or there is inadequate room in the jawbone for the tooth to grow in all the way. The tooth may even be at the same height as the rest of the teeth; however, due to the decreased length of the jawbone, eruption is not possible. Each of these cases must be evaluated individually to decide whether the wisdom teeth are impacted and whether or not there is adequate space for eruption. Once that determination is made, the patient is informed and a treatment plan is developed. There are then anesthetic choices that the patient must make in consultation with the Oral Surgeon. Although some procedures can be done with a local anesthetic (novocaine alone), most people opt to be sedated or put to sleep for the amount of time it takes for removal of the teeth. This requires the patient to be in relatively good health. On the day of the procedure, the patient should have an empty stomach. He/ she should also be accompanied by a parent, if the patient is under 18 years old, or a driver over the age of 18, if the patient is over 18 years of age. There are other requirements that will be explained to the patient at the time of initial consultation. The appointment is usually made in the morning, since the patient will have an empty stomach. It also avoids hunger and accidental drinking or eating prior to the procedure. It is important to consult with an Oral Surgeon to determine whether or not you should have your wisdom teeth removed. An Oral Surgeon is a Dentist who has completed four or more post-graduate years in a hospital setting, doing only surgery and anesthesia training. Your Oral Surgeon is there to help you make an informed decision about your wisdom teeth. Dr. P. Stuart Seider’s practice is located at Broward Oral Surgery Associates, 3157 North University Drive, Suite #104. For information, call 954-431-1600 or visit www.browardoralsurgery.com.

Attention Homeowners – South Florida Foreclosure “Rocket Docket” in Full Swing By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
F
lorida has some of the highest foreclosure numbers in the
U.S., and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have the largest backlog of foreclosure cases in the State. In response to this backlog, all three counties have now instituted their own system to expedite review and resolution of foreclosure cases, which many have referred to as a “rocket docket.” If you are at risk of foreclosure or in foreclosure proceedings, you must read this article closely or you may lose your home. Consistent with its nickname, the new “rocket docket” system reduces the time it takes for a foreclosure case to be brought to trial. Some foreclosure cases are being set for trial by the court within 6 months of the court filing date, sometimes over the objection of the parties. From 40 to more than 100 cases are currently being scheduled for trial before the same judge, during the same trial calendar in just one day. A trial in some cases is concluded within just a few minutes without any meaningful opportunity for the homeowner to present defenses to the foreclosure case. In fact, many cases are being set for trial before the homeowner is permitted to conduct an investigation into the validity of the mortgage documents and proper transfer of foreclosure rights.
As part of the “rocket docket” initiative, retired judges have also been hired on a temporary basis solely to preside over these massive foreclosure trial calendars. While these retired judges are all very competent, they cannot possibly be as familiar with the facts or the law of the case as the actual division judge assigned to each foreclosure case. Attempts to postpone trial dates are routinely denied as part of the “rocket docket” initiative, even if all the attorneys agree that trial should be postponed. In short, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have adopted a “trial at all costs” policy that is not only detrimental to the homeowner who stands to lose their home without sufficient due process, but also to the bank’s attorneys who may not have all the necessary documents to proceed with trial. If there was ever a time for South Florida homeowners to hire an experienced and competent law firm to defend a foreclosure, the time is right now in view of the “rocket docket” system. There are fewer defenses being seriously considered by judges during foreclosure trials, and only limited grounds upon which a trial date will be postponed. More importantly, homeowners need to have a clear and defined plan of action in order to save their homes. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Prenatal Oral Care and Your Child By Dr. Maria Grosman
W
hat does your personal oral care have to
do with your newborn? More than you think.... Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, for their pregnancies, as well as for their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy, including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the more it decreases the risk of cavities, in general, and ECC, specifically. This can be accomplished by eliminating cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reducing the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion, as well as cavities in the mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Road, on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Road. For information or to schedule an appointment, call (954) 236-3434

ccording to Gallup ’ s ongoing series “The
New American Consumer,” the survey company recently reported, “public optimism about home values has surged, with 51% now saying they expect home prices to rise in their area, up from 33% a year ago.” The public’s reasons for owning a home include: ▸▸ It is a good investment. ▸▸ It builds equity and/or good credit. ▸▸ Renting is throwing money away. ▸▸ Owning is cheaper or more cost effective. Most Renters cannot afford to buy. Some of the reasons they decide to rent include: ▸▸ Feel they cannot afford to buy a home. ▸▸ Lack money for a down payment. ▸▸ Feel homes are too expensive. ▸▸ Have bad credit or lack the financial stability needed to buy. ▸▸ Are jobless. Further, Gallup finds that “62% of Americans own their own home, 34% rent, and 3% live with their parents.” Renters are financially locked out of the housing market. Or are they? What about our Davie-Cooper City area, which seems to remain a population of resident homeowners? In the past 90 days, there have been: ▸▸ 85 Closed Single Family Homes (between $300,000 and $800,000) ▸▸ 136 Closed Townhomes and Condos (all prices) ▸▸ 239 Rented Properties (all types, single family, townhomes and condos). History has shown that renting feels like a “temporary” situation, creating a sometimes pent-up demand for home buying among renters. Sometimes renters have not checked their eligibility to purchase. In South Florida, renters may be renting because of lack of inventory and availability of homes for purchase. With prices on the rise, interest rates still low, and pent-up or potential renters desiring to buy, if you are thinking about selling, now would be a great time to consult with me regarding your options. According to Facts & Trends, available rentals are up 22% over the same quarter last year and rented properties are up 34.5% over the same quarter last year. Rented properties are up 24.4% over last month and rented properties are up over 63% over last month. Because our inventory is so low, it has forced these potential homebuyers into a rental situation. Rent continues to climb and there is absolutely no tax benefit. Consider: Our inventory is down 20.4% over the same quarter last year and down 19.5% over last month. If ever there was a time to sell, it is NOW. For a comprehensive, comparative market analysis of a property, contact me at Horton.z@ewm.com, and I will send your report within 24 hours. To search properties in all of Broward County, visit zonahorton. com. I look forward to working with you on your home sale, purchase or lease.

Are You Ready for Hurricane Season? by Sheriff Scott Israel
A
n approaching hurricane can often leave
people in a last minute frenzy to prepare for the storm. The Broward Sheriff’s Office works year round with our local, state and federal partners to ensure the effectiveness of our emergency response during a hurricane. Just as we at BSO plan for unexpected weather emergencies, so should you. As we enter hurricane season, I strongly encourage you to be proactive. Create a disaster supply kit and have an emergency plan in place for you and your family. When preparing your disaster supply kit, the rule of thumb is “hope for three, plan for seven.” Ask yourself what you would need if you couldn’t get to a grocery store, pharmacy, bank or gas station for several days.

Some items to include are: ▸▸ one gallon of water per person per day ▸▸ non-perishable food items ▸▸ a can opener ▸▸ specialty food items for infants, elderly or pets ▸▸ blankets and pillows ▸▸ rain gear ▸▸ comfortable, sturdy shoes ▸▸ a seven-day supply of medicines or prescription drugs ▸▸ first aid items ▸▸ flashlights and an ample supply of batteries ▸▸ a battery-operated radio ▸▸ a fully-charged cell phone ▸▸ cash and credit cards ▸▸ a full tank of gas ▸▸ a waterproof container filled with important documents. Emergency and evacuation plans should be discussed in advance. Determine which place in your home would be the safest during a storm, and decide at what point you would move to a shelter. If you have pets, identify in advance which shelters are pet friendly. When securing your home, here are some important safety reminders: ▸▸ Protect windows and glass doors with hurricane shutters. ▸▸ If you use plywood, make sure all pieces are properly fastened. ▸▸ Bring in all patio furniture, outdoor plants and decorations so they don’t become airborne debris. While you can always count on the Broward Sheriff’s Office during times of emergency, there is plenty you can do to ensure your families and homes are ready for hurricane season. Don’t wait for a storm to threaten. Be safe this hurricane season! For more information about hurricane preparedness, visit www.sheriff.org/safety/hurricane. Ask The Expert
Should I Play in Pain? By Dr. Tony Moya
T
he ability to exercise and compete effectively
and at the highest performance possible will depend on how healthy your body is, how strong your muscles are and how well trained you are. So avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise. What are the parameters used by doctors and professional athletes to decide whether it is safe to play or not? How do you determine whether you are able to play or not? If you decide to exercise and play with pain you must monitor the intensity of the pain during the game. If your pain allows you to run, jump or exercise without limitations and if the pain does not increase in intensity, the injury is considered in most cases stable. Most athletes can continue to exercise with caution.

Avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise.
If your pain is something that came slowly with the aging process then it is most likely arthritic in nature and you should change the types of exercises you do. Avoid loading, high impact exercises and do none-loading, low impact exercises such as cycling or swimming. If the pain showed up suddenly it is usually something that will not allow you to exercise. If you are playing and the pain increases in intensity you should stop playing. If the pain is gone by the time you wake up the next day then it is okay to exercise and compete on that day. This indicates that the amount of tissue injury is not and has not exceeded tissue healing. If the pain is present the next morning after you exercise you should then consult your physician to take X-rays and even a MRI Scan to find out in detail what is causing your pain. If your X-ray and MRI Scan are negative then ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medications are enough to let you return to sports. In other more serious injuries such as fractures, rotator cuff tears, meniscus tear and ACL tears, the decision to return to sports activities can be complicated. In those cases surgery may be required and the return to play may be between two to six months after surgery. This is a decision your physician will have to make with you. In conclusion, strengthening and stretching your muscles and joints will keep you playing without pain. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. Open Your Mouth and Say “Ahh”
Have No Fear Ladies, Bioidenticals Are Here
By Dr. Eduardo Bernal, DVM
A
very common phrase told to us by our physi -
cians to start our yearly physical examination is “Open your mouth and say Ahh.” This examination is not different for our beloved pets. They need a physical too. More if you think that at any time that we feel sick or we have any abnormality we can talk to our family doctor and get that fix. Dogs and cats will show some signs of sickness that require a well-trained eye, a good physical examination, a good history and some laboratory test to find what is wrong with them. Yearly or twice a year visits to the veterinarian are important to prevent deadly diseases with the vaccines, to check the pet and the functioning of its internal organs like the liver and kidneys with blood tests, as well to be sure that the prevention for heart worm we are using has been effective.
The physical examination should be done from nose to tail to eliminate the possibility of a disease, inflammation, infections, pain or other abnormalities. It should start with the check of the body temperature, then evaluate the oral cavity for presence of dental disease like dental tartar, plaque, gingivitis, loose, abnormal positioned or fractured tooth and plan the correction like dental cleanings, dental radiographs, extractions, and finally to suggest the best way to keep a healthy mouth. Then the eyes are evaluated for the correct position of eye and eyelids, wellhydrated cornea and size and shape of the eye blood vessels. The ears should be examined with an otoscope to see the ear canal and facilitate taking a sample for cytology to determine the presence of mites, bacteria or yeast. Check as well the ears’ smell, the quality of the wax, and determine the presence of inflammation or pain. The chest should be auscultated, the heart sounds and the pulses checked. Heart sounds are very important as the rhythm of its contractions and the pulse should correlate and the lungs should sound clear. The abdomen should be palpated to feel the organ size and shape and for the determination of masses or tumors. The lymph nodes should be examined for size and mobility. These glands can be enlarged with local or distal infections and with some types of cancer. The skin is checked for fleas, mites, lice, tumors or loosing hair. A gastrointestinal parasites examination will help prevent the contamination of other pets or humans with common parasites such as hookworms and roundworms, but there are more parasites that need to be checked for like whipworms, coccidia, and giardia; treatment is indicated if the presence is confirmed in the sample. As we can see, our pets need a good physical to make sure that they are healthy. By knowing how their systems are working, we can make changes and recommendations to have them live long and happy lives. Dr. Eduardo Bernal and his staff at All Friends Animal Clinic are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 4476 Weston Road. I
t has been nearly ten years since the over - pub -
licized and over-exaggerated risks of hormone therapy hit the news. This has been a serious disservice to women, creating a fear of hormones which has been blown out of proportion. Out of concern for my patients, many of whom suffer from changes associated with their ovaries in approach to menopause or in reaching full menopause, and a genuine interest in finding a safe and suitable solution, I spent nearly a year researching medical literature with regard to bioindentical hormones. I discovered that those studies, which caused all the fear, had to do with synthetic hormones. Those risks do not pertain to bioidentical hormone therapy. Hormone therapy is nothing to fear. Hormones are used in many other aspects of medicine. Where would we be today if it were not for insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas to regulate blood sugar? Insulin therapy allows many of my diabetic patients to experience a normal prenatal course and give birth to healthy babies. Hormones are also used to regulate thyroid disorders. Even children are prescribed growth hormone therapy if they are not growing properly. It is also a viable treatment for menopausal women. When you consider today’s population and average life span, women will spend over 1/3 of their lives in menopause (lack of ovarian function). I have a list available in my exam rooms of over 35 symptoms commonly associated with menopause and perimenopause. Many times in greeting a patient, they will express that “I am having 30 out of 35 of these symptoms.” At some point in a woman’s life, menopause is inevitable. Bioidentical hormones can alleviate the symptoms associated with lack of estrogen and testosterone as these levels fall with age. Quality of life is enhanced as skin tone, hair, nails, energy, libido, and memory are all improved. Bioidentical hormone therapy also offers many health benefits. After using natural hormones, women experience an increase in bone density which protects against osteoporosis. Muscle metabolism is also improved leading to an increase in muscle mass and reduction of body fat. Testosterone protects the heart and heart disease is the number one medical problem in this country. It is important to point out that bioidentical hormone therapy is not a one size fits all treatment. In other words, every patient has their therapy individualized, so it is custom prepared to fill their body’s deficiencies and put the body back into balance. Patients sleep better, therapeutic levels are more consistent, and everything improves over time. Patients who are using bioidentical hormone therapy have a high degree of satisfaction. I am consistently told: “I should have done this sooner,” “my children want to be around me again,” and “I have more energy.” Men can also benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy. As men age, testosterone levels decrease. With hormone therapy men notice increased muscle strength, more energy, and a better libido. Don’t take my word for it, do your own research; talk with others who have benefited from bioidentical hormone therapy. It’s a natural and safe way to improve your health and quality of life. “Riley” Riley is a fiveyear-old Maltese. His favorite people are his mom and big sister. His favorite toy is his squeaky toy skunk. He likes to go for long walks. He does not like dealing with water (baths, pool). His favorite thing to do is to relax by the lake with the breeze in his face. He was last seen taking a nap at the end of a long day.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Helps Older Dogs Walk Again
M
y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my family & I decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end.

I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could benefit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

What sets The Contour Day Spa apart from other day spas? I never really compare my
business to others in the community as I feel each has a very specific identity and there is room in the market for each to prosper. However I will say that The Contour Day Spa has been in existence for over 30 years and we are blessed to have a very loyal following.

the U.S. by way of Israel to fulfill my American dream. After arriving, I established roots in Plantation. I was not alone on my journey, accompanied by husband Joseph and my two sons Jay and Yony, who each play an active role in the business. I opened my first business - an 847 square foot nail salon in a strip center 20 years ago-- and always knew that someday I would build the spa of my dreams. Through hard work, perseverance and vision, the 26,000 square foot spa in Plantation was born.
Please tell us about the training and experience of your staff. Simply put, we only hire the best and most qualified therapists. We have staff members from literally all corners of the globe and each brings with them a wealth of personal and professional experience. This makes us quite unique. We value individuality and often incorporate techniques or nuances that our therapists have brought with them from other parts of the world in our treatments. Additionally we offer extensive ongoing education. Together we share ideas and develop service protocols in monthly meetings. It’s rather exciting as we are con-
stantly growing as a company and expanding our offerings.
Please tell us about your Garden Banquet Venue. The Garden Venue is our latest and most
exciting undertaking. It’s a full service banquet facility located within the Contour Building. The Garden Venue is available for private events ranging from corporate networking to weddings and private parties for up to 120 guests for sit down dinner and more for a buffet style. When holding events of our own in the past, we realized that banquet facilities in the area are really best suited for large events. There wasn’t an elegant space available in Broward County for groups of 200 or less. So we created one! The response from the community has been very positive. To read more about this log on to: www. thegardenvenue.com.
Do you offer memberships? Monthly specials? We offer monthly specials with substan-
tial savings. Be sure that we have your email address – and make it your business to open our emails, so you are amongst the first to know about our deal of the month. We have several membership programs available to our clients. The most popular membership is our “Swedish Massage or European Facial Membership” –$65 per month to receive one or the other once a month. This membership includes the use of steam & sauna, men and women locker rooms, as well as all of the Spa amenities. Being a member entitles you to receive 10% off any other spa service on the day of your massage or facial appointment.
Why should clients come visit The Contour Day Spa? I could go on and on about our facility and our many services. But the number one reason a client should spend time with us is because we care. It will be evident the moment you come through the front door and I give my personal guarantee that your expectations will not only be met, but surpassed.

Lisa Faina visits local high schools to speak about the dangers of texting and driving. She also encourages students to take the “X the TXT” pledge.
How do you help in the effort to prevent texting while driving? We care about our cli-
ents and do whatever we can to help keep them safe. Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions facing today’s teens. It increases their risk of crashing by 23 times. I visit local high schools to speak about the dangers of texting and driving. I also encourage students to take the “X the TXT” pledge, which is part of an Allstate campaign to end texting while driving and encourage people across the country to focus on the road. More than 80,000 people have already taken the pledge. The Allstate Insurance Agency is located at 2643 N. Hiatus Rd., in the Embassy Lakes Shopping Center.
