Make Time for Family
T
he kids are out of school and the tempera-
tures seem to reach new record levels every day. While we struggle to find meaningful things for our kids to do, we should not forget that summers are meant to spend time together as a family. We all get caught up in our busy professional lives and sometimes need to be reminded of why we are working so hard. Our children are the core of our family life and their bored expressions these days remind us to head out for one of those great American traditions -- the family summer vacation. So let’s turn off the smartphones and tablets for a few days, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend some time at the beach, visit the Everglades, read a book, go camping, play a board game, see a movie together, jump in the pool, or just chill out in the back yard. These quality moments together are what we and our children will remember for some time to come. So let’s enjoy the heat and each other. Have a great summer!

She has more than 25 Barbie dolls in her collection. Most weekends, she and her friends get together and play with their dolls for hours at a time.

Davie Offers Large Animal Hurricane Release Program By Debby Teich
D
avie’ s rural character and equestrian lifestyle
has attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses are safe in the event that a major storm threatens the area. For the past eight years, the Town has opened a 100-acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area before and during a hurricane or natural disaster. The Town has already begun accepting pre-registration applications for the Temporary Housing for Horses Program. There is an annual fee of $40 per horse and applications are available online at www.davie-fl.gov. In order to qualify for the program, you must be a Davie resident or your horse(s) must live in Davie. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph. The Town encourages residents to visit the site before they pre-register to determine if it is safer than their current situation. Julie Bonchick of Davie recently bought two horses and plans to sign up for the program. Although she prefers to keep her horses on her own property during a storm, she will sign up in case there is severe weather. “I have a strong bond with my horses and would hate for anything to happen to them,” said Julie. “I am happy that the Town has a program and I will certainly use it if necessary.” For information, call 954-797-1163 or send an email to matthew_mlodzinski@davie-fl. gov. To access the application online, visit www.davie-fl.gov, click on Hurricane Info and locate Davie Horse Release Program.

Cooper City Teen Will Tour in Chicago This Summer By Debby Teich
I
t has only been a few years since
sixteen-year-old Ryan Boyd of Cooper City started playing guitar and he is already headed to the top. This summer, he will get a taste of what a professional career in music might be like, as he tours the Chicago area with the School of Rock AllStars. Ryan started playing lead guitar when he was in 6th grade. He took a few lessons and then decided to try and teach himself to play and write music. After playing in garage bands with friends, he decided it was time to get serious about music. “I love making music and creating something out of nothing,” said Ryan, who says his music is influenced by Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan and The Police. “It is such a great feeling when I finish writing a song and it sounds good.” In 2011, Ryan started taking lessons at School of Rock West Broward, which combines weekly private music lessons and group band rehearsals to prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting. After students perform in a few shows, they have the opportunity to audition for the School of Rock AllStars, which includes 100 of the school’s top musicians. Each summer, the AllStars embark on a tour, complete with tour buses and multiple live shows throughout the country. To become an AllStar, Ryan had to be recom-

mended by the school’s directors and instructors and then audition and compete against approximately 9,000 musicians nationwide. Ryan submitted an audition tape that included Led Zeppelin’s Heartbreaker and Steve Vai’s Tender Surrender and was selected. “I was very impressed by Ryan’s audition tape, but not surprised” said Christian Davis, Music Director of the School of Rock in West Broward. “Seeing him play a Led Zeppelin song with the perfect execution of “Jimmy Page” vocabulary was impressive, but watching and hearing him go from that to nailing the virtuosity of Steve Vai truly blew me away!” Ryan will begin his Midwest tour in July. It will end at Lollapalooza in Chicago, where he will play at the same venue as Mumford and Sons, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, and many more. “Ryan’s abilities are far beyond his years,” said Davis. “His dedication and drive are inspiring to the most seasoned of veterans within the music community. Ryan has a good head on his shoulders. He possesses the ability to play ridiculously well, and also carries himself in a mature, professional manner. It’s rare to see someone his age take so much consideration and passion into their instrument. Ryan has a bright future ahead of him, and I’m sure we’ll all be saying “I knew him when...’ someday.”

Top 10 Causes of Hair Loss (Part 1) By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
G
No Slit. No ScarS. No PaiN.
re-grow loSt hair the Natural way introducing the latest in permanent hair restoration
enetics can play a big part. H ormones often
take the blame. Medical conditions are certainly the agents. Innocent blow drying can even be the villain. We’re talking of course about hair loss! In this three-part series (July, August, September issues), you’ll learn the top 10 different causes for hair loss and ways to control them. Let’s face it: everyone loses hair! Unfortunately, excessive hair loss may be a sign of a more serious condition and can affect men, women and children. Understanding the normal hair cycle. The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for two to three years. During this phase, each hair grows approximately one centimeter per month. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at the same time, whereas the remaining 10 percent of your hair is in a resting phase. After a three to four month period, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place. It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle, approximately 50 to 100 hairs. Here are the first three causes for excessive hair loss: 1. Telogen Effluvium. This condition, which typically occurs after pregnancy, major surgery, extreme stress or weight loss, causes massive amounts of hair loss daily. Usually loss occurs during the washing, styling and brushing of the hair. Telogen Effluvium can also be a side effect of certain medications, such as antidepressants, beta-blockers, and anti-inflammatory drugs. What you can do: In some cases, you may have to take your time and wait until the hair loss gradually lessens. If medication is the culprit, talk to your doctor about lowering your dosage or switching drugs. When the condition is stress related, do your best to reduce anxiety. 2. Hypothyroidism. When your body does not produce enough thyroid hormones, this condition occurs. The thyroid hormone is responsible for everything, from your metabolism to your nails. To diagnose this condition, take a blood test to measure the thyroid-stimulating hormone. Don’t forget to ask your doctor to test for Free T3, which is the active hormone. What you can do: After getting a diagnosis, follow up by contacting a certified Functional Medicine Doctor in order to be treated with a natural medicine rather than the typical synthetic hormone, which can continue the cycle of hair loss. 3. Lupus. This chronic autoimmune disease, which affects up to 1.5 million people, causes your body’s own immune system to attack the remaining healthy tissues. Lupus, which primarily affects women, infects nearly every tissue or organ in one’s body causing painful joints, rashes, anemia, fatigue, ulcers and hair loss. Specialized tests are recommended for this disease and are usually performed by a rheumatologist. What you can do: Treating the disease with medication typically produces the best results in reducing hair loss along with the other symptoms mentioned. In the next issue, we’ll continue to cover the main causes of hair loss. In the meantime, if your condition has really been affecting you physically and emotionally, consider being evaluated by a functional medicine doctor who will get to the root of the problem, and assist you through the process of hair re-growth. Davie Hosts Mass Casualty Incident By Debby Teich
L
ast month , first responders in Davie were dispatched to a
structural collapse, with approximately 30 injured patients who required triage, treatment, and transport. Some of the victims could be heard screaming in pain or calling out for loved ones that were lost. Fortunately, it was all part of a planned Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill hosted and coordinated by the Davie Fire Rescue Department. “The drill helps us identify strengths and weaknesses, so we can determine how to do things better the next time,” said Andrew Popick, Battalion Chief for the Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department. “It helps us prepare for real incidents.” An assortment of live victims and manikins were used to simulate injuries and entrapment. Since Davie Fire Rescue was the first to arrive on the scene, they were responsible for identifying the extent of the victims’ injuries and tagging them appropriately. They used green tags for the walking wounded, yellow tags for those who were moderately to seriously injured, red tags for critical patients with life threatening injuries, and black tags for the deceased. After the victims were tagged, they were moved to a treatment area, where their conditions were upgraded or downgraded. The critically injured were sent to area hospitals. Several mutual aid agencies also participated in the drill, including Sunrise, Plantation, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines and Lauderhill. They waited in a staging area down the street until Davie Fire Rescue called for help. They made sure that their response time was based on how long it would actually take them to arrive on the scene. It has been a few years since Davie Fire Rescue went into full MCI operation for a tour bus that turned over on 595. As incidents like the Boston Marathon bombing and Oklahoma City tornadoes become more prevalent, however, it is more important than ever for emergency personnel to be trained for mass disasters. Cub Scouts to Host Fishing Derby in Davie By Debby Teich
O
n J uly 27, Cub Scouts in the Pine
Island District will leave their electronics behind to spend quality time with parents, volunteers, and other scouts at the first annual Fishing Derby. It will be held at Camp Elmore in Davie. “We like to encourage as many outdoor events as possible during the summer,” said Jeff Wicklein, Pack 183 Cubmaster, who is organizing the event. “The Fishing Derby is a great family activity. It is a good way for families to learn to fish if they do not already know how to do it.” More than 150 people are expected to attend the event for boys, ages 6-11 years old. For only $8 per person, scouts can fish from 9am to 1pm. The first 100 kids who register will even receive a free fishing pole. The lake is stocked with bream, largemouth bass, and
catfish. The scouts will have a chance to win awards and trophies for “most fish caught,” “longest fish caught,” and other categories. Anything caught will be released. Volunteers will be available to help with casting, reeling and general fishing practices. Scouts who have their own poles and live bait should bring them. If not, they will be supplied with both on a first come, first served basis. Organizers will also have hooks and bobbers. Plastic and artificial lures are prohibited. The district wide event will mix education and fun. There will be a variety of special exhibits and booths to teach the boys about fishing knots, catch and release, and the importance of protecting the environment. Scouts who visit each booth will earn a special fishing patch.

Cooper City Receives Re-Engage for Good Grant By Debby Teich
T
he City of Cooper City recently received a $20,000 grant
from the Community Foundation of Broward to implement two Re-engage for Good: City Challenge projects - Branching Out with Volunteers and Preserving Cooper City’s Past. It is reaching out to an often overlooked and under tapped resource, newly retired baby boomer professionals, to help implement the projects. The purpose of the City Challenge program is to reengage baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, in meaningful community improvement opportunities. It seeks to connect new retirees to high impact service opportunities to address local city challenges. “The best way to engage residents, who often become disconnected from their community after retirement, is at a local civic level,” said Community Foundation Program Manager, Lindsey Linzer. “This grant gives Cooper City new ways for Preserving Cooper City’s Past involves re-hauling the city’s historical room.
retired residents to give back to their community.” Branching Out with Volunteers focuses on the abundant tree canopies found throughout Cooper City. The City is responsible for approximately 10,000 trees and has limited data on them. Volunteers will conduct a tree inventory, which will allow the City to implement an efficient tree maintenance program. It will also help the City to prepare for Branching Out with Volunteers focuses reimbursement and recovery from future on the abundant tree canopies found throughout Cooper City. storm damage. Holly Brooks, 52, plans to help with the effort. “I love anything that involves nature,” said Holly, who is a retired science teacher. “I look forward to using my knowledge of trees and plants to help the City of Cooper City.” Preserving Cooper City’s Past involves re-hauling the city’s historical room, located in the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebridge Parkway. In 2002, a small room and cabinet were designated as a place to store and display Cooper City historical information. Very little has been done to update the information and many residents are unaware of its existence. Volunteers will help organize and preserve the information. They will also develop programs to educate local students and other residents about the area’s history. For information on the Cooper City initiatives or to volunteer, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or send an email to Recreation@CooperCityFL.org. Davie Student Wins MS Scholarship By Debby Teich
T
he National MS Society South
Florida Chapter recently announced the 2013 recipients of its scholarship. Eighteen-year-old Austin Gomez of Davie, whose mother has multiple sclerosis (MS), was one of the winners. He received a $1,000 scholarship. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. The scholarship program helps students affected by MS pursue a college education. In addition to the emotional toll, MS can have a financial impact on a family. The direct and indirect costs of MS, including lost wages - even for those with health insurance - are estimated at more than $70,000 annually per household. This makes funding a college education that much harder. The scholarship is for high school seniors

or graduates who are attending an accredited postsecondary school for the first time. To qualify, applicants must have multiple sclerosis themselves or have a parent with the condition. They are judged based on a school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, an essay, and a letter of recommendation. Austin’s mother was diagnosed with MS five years ago. Initially, there was little effect and she was able to lead her life the same as she always had. A few years later, her health started to decline. She lost some of her vision and muscle strength. At 15, Austin was forced to assume some of the family’s responsibilities. He began driving his sister to theater class, going to the grocery store and more. “Although it was difficult to balance my responsibilities at home, while playing on threehockey teams and completing my school work, I was happy to do my part to contribute to the family,” said Austin. Austin will use the scholarship money to pay for his education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he will study Mechanical Engineering. He chose the major, because he is hoping to design a product that will help cure or treat MS.

McCayla was a Key Club member for all four years during high school. As last year’s president, she led nearly 100 members, presided over the board and still managed to maintain a high GPA. “McCayla worked extremely hard to lead this year’s club to the outstanding level it has achieved,” said Lydia Kruger, club president. “She is a superior leader, and is sure to succeed in whatever endeavors she takes on in the future.” McCayla will continue her education at Florida

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 6/30/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. Dear Friend,
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.”
– J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $37. p.p.S. Western High Students Receive Plaques for Helping at Crash Site By Debby Teich
T
he Rotary Club of Weston recently recognized the valiant
efforts of 20 Western High School seniors who demonstrated courage and selflessness. The students were on their way to the prom in Ft. Lauderdale, when a van flipped over in front of their limousine. Dressed in their formal attire, they stopped to rescue seven people, including two kids, who were trapped in the overturned mini-van on I-595 near Hiatus Road. “The students were honored for demonstrating ‘service above self,’ which is a key tenet of the Rotary Club,” said Rotary’s Bob Harms. “They stopped to help those people at a very inconvenient time. Some of the kids ended up going to the prom with blood on their clothes.”

The “heroes” received plaques at the Rotary Club’s annual Scholarship Awards Breakfast. The plaque stated that it was for “courage in the face of adversity, exemplary personal character, and service above self.” Each year, the Rotary presents college scholarships to seniors from Western, Cypress Bay and Sagemont High Schools. This year, 47 students received nearly $75,000 in scholarships, the most ever awarded by the Weston club. Ashley Wolf and Ana Isabel Garcia, both from Western, received 4-year scholarships. In the fall, Ashley will be attending Florida State University and Ana will be attending Nova Southeastern University. Scholarship money is raised through the WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic and a pre-tournament raffle party held in April.

University School Wins Six Cappies By Debby Teich
H
igh school theater stu -
dents from 14 public and private schools throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties recently took home awards at the 11th Annual Cappies Awards Gala. University School of Nova Southeastern University had the most honored musical production, with five awards for Tarzan The Stage Musical. The school won the following awards: ▸▸ Best Musical ▸▸ Supporting Actor in a Musical: Ryan Juda (for the role of Kerchak) ▸▸ Supporting Actress in a Musical: Laura Galindo (for the role of Terk) ▸▸ Ensemble in a Musical: Apes Ensemble ▸▸ Orchestra: Jammin’ Jungle Orchestra ▸▸ Freshman Critic: Carlo Feliciani The Critics’ Awards Program (Cappies for short) recognizes high school theater in 42 categories, including performers, designers, technicians and critics. Nominations are made by student critics from participating schools. They attend each other’s shows to write reviews, which are then edited by theater educators and sent to the local media. The students determine the winners through a weighted peer review voting process. Christopher Wilgos, Theater Director and Department Chair for the Arts, says that University School had been planning to produce another show, but switched gears when Tarzan The Stage became AD_OurCity_1/4:Layout 1 Musical 4/23/13 6:40 available PM Pagefor1the first time. Based
on the Disney film and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original story “Tarzan of the Apes,” the unlikely love story is full of adventure and includes songs by Phil Collins. “It was a great opportunity to be able to present the Ft. Lauderdale premiere of the show,” said Wilgos. “It is a very unique, exciting and engaging show.” Approximately 45 students participated in the show. It required a 12 person orchestra, as well as more than 20 students to help back stage. The school hired a company to rig the stage, so the students could hang from the vines and swing on them. After six weeks of rehearsals, students were ready for a preview show and four performances. “I am so proud of all of the students in the cast and crew, as well as the production team,” said Wilgos. This is the second time that University School won the South Florida Cappie for Best Musical. In 2011, it won for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Fox Trail Elementary Science Teacher Wins Trip to Space Camp By Debby Teich
W
hen Fox Trail E lementary ’ s Lucio Garay (aka “The Science Guy”) teaches students about outer space this fall, he will be able to speak with authority and inspiration. After winning a contest, Garay will spend a week at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He is hoping to bring back a variety of tools to help motivate his students to become the next generation of explorers. As soon as Garay heard about the contest to send educators to space camp, he was determined to win. He encouraged students, friends, family and everyone else to vote for him. Garay was in 6th grade when he watched the space shuttle Challenger explode on live television in 1986. Seventeen years later, he was teaching 6th grade, when he and his students watched the the same thing happen to Columbia. “I was in shock when both the Challenger and Columbia exploded,” said Garay. “I wondered if I would ever have the courage to go into outer space. The camp will allow me to virtually feel what happens in space. When I return to school, I will be able to teach my students all about space, which is in essence what Christa McAuliffe was trying to do. What an honor this will be.”
At the Space Academy, Garay will spend an intense five days participating in workshops, training for simulated space missions, and learning to move in space on the astronaut training simulators. The activities include NASA content and are correlated to the National Science Education Standards. Garay will leave the program with access to lesson plans, as well as standards and tips to help him adapt the workshop activities for use in his own classroom. All of the students at Fox Trail, from kindergarten to 5th grade, visit the science lab. Garay works hard to come up with creative ways to help science come alive. He uses a “handson” approach that often involves Lucio Garay (aka “The Science Guy”) group activities. “I like to let the students explore and figure things out for themselves instead of just showing them,” said Garay. “If they discover things on their own, while I facilitate, then the learning is true and real. I am excited to share everything I learn this summer with my students.”

Alimony and Retirement By Evan Baron
W
hen a spouse is ordered to pay Permanent Alimony, it will terminate upon the re-marriage of the receiving spouse or the death of either party. Does that mean if one of the above conditions is not met alimony continues forever? Not necessarily. Florida law allows a party to modify or terminate an alimony obligation if there has been “a substantial change of circumstance.” A substantial change of circumstance requires an involuntary change which could not be anticipated at the time of the Final Judgment. Therefore, if someone voluntarily reduces his income, by quitting a job or switching to one which pays less, he cannot seek a modification. The above would be considered a voluntary change, which is not cause for a reduction. Can an individual who is paying alimony voluntarily retire and either reduce or terminate his alimony obligation? Retirement, unless it’s a mandatory retirement, is voluntary. Does a person paying alimony have to work until he dies? The answer is no! A person has the right to retire, but only under certain circumstances. The courts have ruled that a person can retire at an age which is customary in the industry in which he is employed. There are court cases which approve retirement at 55, for a law enforcement officer who is eligible after 30 years of service. There are court cases which state that a person cannot retire until he reached normal retirement age, generally considered to be over 65. Therefore, every situation is different, based upon the circumstances. The proposed alimony reform bill would have clarified this, but as we all know Governor Scott vetoed it.

Just because a person retires doesn’t necessarily mean that alimony terminates. It may mean that alimony will not terminate, but be reduced according to the income the paying spouse will be receiving during retirement. The court needs to consider not only the ability to pay, but the continuing needs of the receiving spouse. The court cannot leave either party in poverty. An individual’s assets can also be taken into consideration. As you can see there is no definitive rule as to this issue, since each case must be considered individually. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Innovative Hip Replacement Surgery: Minimally Invasive Direct Anterior Surgery There may be a number of reasons for persistent hip pain. When the pain interferes with day-to-day functioning, and limits a person’s ability to walk normally, sit comfortably or perform daily activities, it’s time to seek medical advice. In some cases, pain can be resolved with conservative treatments such as ice, physical therapy, rest, activity modification, pain relievers or injections. In other cases, surgery becomes necessary. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s, Orthopaedic Surgeon Juan Suarez, MD, specializes in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and says it is important to evaluate each patient to determine a treatment approach that is best for him or her. “We perform a thorough evaluation of the patient through a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and other imaging to evaluate the cause of hip pain, Dr. Suarez said. “After a thorough examination, if the patient is a candidate for hip replacement surgery, we ensure that he or she fully understands what to expect before, during and after the procedure.”
Physical Therapy Physical therapy is the key to recovering mobility and can begin the first day after surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a rehabilitation program with techniques that facilitate patients’ recovery. After physical therapy, patients can usually return to recreational Juan Suarez, MD pastimes such as cycling, golf, Cleveland Clinic Florida, skiing, tennis and horseback Orthopaedic Surgeon riding. The risk of dislocation is also less using the direct anterior technique. Patients are not required to follow strict precautions as are necessary following other traditional surgical methods.
To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of few facilities offering patients a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery called “direct anterior.” This approach enables the surgeon to insert the hip prosthesis through a small incision at the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or back where the surgeon has to cut through muscles and tendons. Faster Recovery Due to smaller incisions and less muscle trauma, patients recover faster with the direct anterior approach than with traditional hip replacement surgery. In some instances, patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities in as little as two weeks. Patients also endure a much shorter hospital stay and report less pain, which reduces the need for pain medication. The use of assistive devices such as canes and walkers is also substantially reduced. In contrast, the average recovery time with traditional hip replacement surgery is two to six months, making the direct anterior hip replacement surgery an appealing alternative.

How to Effectively Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
T
housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50%
upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage to worry about? Also, since the real estate market is improving, think of all the equity you could build up years from now if you could wipe out your second mortgage or credit line today? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. This is especially true if the second mortgage or credit line is about to convert or has converted from an interest only to a principal plus interest payment. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When mortgage liens are removed from a property during bankruptcy proceedings, it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. Many bankruptcy courts permit a second mortgage or line of credit to be extinguished if the total amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the home. For example, if you owe $200,000 on the first mortgage of your principal residence, and $150,000 on your second mortgage of that same residence, BUT your principal residence is only worth $195,000, the $150,000 second mortgage would be wiped out in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy without any tax consequences. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit can also be completely eliminated down to the appraised value of the home on investment properties. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years, or even modify your first mortgage through a loss mitigation program offered by South Florida bankruptcy courts. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during the bankruptcy. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Edit Headline Practice Precaution – Prevent a Drowning Tragedy edit author
By Sheriff Scott Israel
I
t only takes a minute . You look away. you may
not hear the splash and your child is nowhere in sight. Drowning – the harsh reality of losing a child in as little as 20 seconds. Sadly, in 2012, Broward County lost nine children under the age of four to drowning accidents. Since January 2013, there have been two more. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is committed to educating parents and caregivers about taking precautions to help end these preventable tragedies. Living in South Florida, we are surrounded by water. Although children may know how to swim, if left unsupervised, they can drown in less than two inches of water. When participating in outdoor water activities, I encourage you to follow these safety-conscious behaviors:
Broward Oral Surgery Associates ▸▸ Never leave a child alone around water - not even for a moment! ▸▸ Teach your child to swim as soon as he or she is able to crawl. ▸▸ Always designate an Official Water Watcher. Similar to a “designated driver,” this person is solely responsible for keeping an eye on children in or around any body of water. ▸▸ Avoid distractions while watching children around a pool (i.e., texting, talking on the phone, barbecuing or sleeping). ▸▸ Utilize layers of protection including self-closing gates, locks on gates and doors and pool covers. ▸▸ All doors leading to any body of water should have an audible alarm to indicate when they are being opened. ▸▸ Keep lifesaving equipment nearby, including a cell phone, reach pole, and life preservers with a rope. ▸▸ Any time a child is missing, immediately search all bodies of water first. Do not scan; look thoroughly! ▸▸ Learn CPR. As we enter the summer months, I encourage you to visit www.sheriff.org/drowning to fill out a Pool Safety Survey and assess the water safety precautions you have in place for your family. As a central part of the Drowning Prevention Task Force, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue Division also provides community education and awareness seminars to public and private organizations, such as condo associations, schools and businesses to help you identify potential hazards. To schedule a seminar for your community or business, please call 954.831.8210. While you are out enjoying a fun day in the water this summer, please remember to be responsible and practice safety. Make a commitment to safeguard our children from becoming victims of this entirely preventable tragedy. Stay safe and enjoy your summer! As always, you can stay up-to-date on BSO news and information when you become a fan of our Facebook page (Broward Sheriff’s Office – Official), follow us on Twitter@browardsheriff or sign up for our CyberVisor program.

ike many parents in our community, I tend to
approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas”. In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience”. Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 954-236-3434.

Flat Feet & Tight Calf Muscles: A Bad Combination
Home Prices Are Still Undervalued
By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M.
T
he foot has two primary functions during
gait. It first acts as a shock absorber when the foot hits the ground. This helps soften the impact during walking and running. Once it is ready to push off it acts as a rigid lever. This helps the foot plant to the ground very firmly and allows a person to push off very smoothly and efficiently. Flat feet occur when the ligaments connecting the bones together are loose. They allow the foot to act like a loose bag of bones when they hit the ground. This allows the foot to absorb shock very well. However, it does not allow it to act like a rigid lever during push off. In an attempt to stabilize the arch and to improve walking and running the muscles in the lower leg have to work harder than normal during activity. These muscles usually fatigue prematurely, causing pain. Pain may also be present in the inner knee and the lower back region as well as the body tries to stabilize an unstable foot.

I
s this a bubble ? N o. It is a rebound. H ome prices
are still undervalued. According to KCM’s Steve Harney, “The housing market is recovering so nicely that it has caused some to wonder whether a new housing bubble is forming. Today, we want to explain that the fear of a new pricing bubble in real estate is unwarranted.” Trulia revealed “. . .national home prices are still seven percent undervalued. Prices are still undervalued in 91% of markets and, even in the markets that are overvalued, they are nowhere near the numbers of the 2006-2007 bubble.” Here are Harney’s three reasons for market rebound-no bubble: 1. Supply is beginning to increase. A lack of inventory is creating a market of multiple bids, which has caused prices to rise. The National Association of Realtors (NAR), in their latest Existing Home Sales Report, revealed that the months’ supply of inventory has increased from 4.3 to 5.2 months since January. 2. Demand will decrease in certain demographics. For an example, investors have been a large part of the housing market over the last several years. As prices continue to rise, a certain percentage of these buyers will back off. 3. As mortgage rates increase, buyers will be able to afford less. The Mortgage Bankers Association, Fannie Mae and NAR have all projected an increase in mortgage rates over the next year. Buying power will decrease as borrowers can no longer afford the same price point as monthly payments will increase. Here is my reason for market rebound-no bubble: There are more cash buyers than ever before. Homebuyers are getting great deals at great prices. They are purchasing with cash, which means fewer are sliding underwater. Consider:
Davie-Cooper City: January-June, 2013 (First Six Months)
The calf muscle is the large muscle in the back of the lower leg. When this muscle is excessively tight it puts further stress on the arch causing the arch to flatten further. The muscles have to work even harder, making it difficult for children and teenagers to participate in sports and activities without a significant amount of discomfort and fatigue. Verifying this combination is critical to the overall wellness of an individual. If the calf muscle is excessively tight it should be put in a cast to stretch it. Once the calf muscle is stretched then an orthotic is made for the foot to give it better balance and position. Occasionally physical therapy is necessary to keep the muscles flexible and to also improve overall coordination and balance in the person experiencing the problems. This produces a great long-term outcome. A failure to diagnose and correctly treat this problem will almost always lead to long-term problems. These include chronic pain and possible arthritis in the foot and ankle. It will also aggravate underlying knee and back problems. The earlier the treatment, the better the long-term result. Orthotics should not be made until the calf muscles have been adequately stretched out. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. His partners are Dr. Al DeSimone, Dr. Fernando Moya, Dr. Alexander Bertot, Dr. Mark Fishman, Dr. Carlo Messina, Dr. David Shenassa, and Dr. Nathan Vela. pet of the Month
“Ruby” Ruby is a 1-yearold Galah Cockatoo who loves affection. Her favorite person is anyone that scratches her neck. Her favorite toys are ones that she can really chomp at or rip apart. She does not like getting her nails trimmed. She likes to flip and swim around in a fleece blanket on the couch. She also loves yogurt and oatmeal in the morning. Her favorite thing to do is to follow me around the house and figure out where I am. She also likes to wrestle with my teacup poodle “Dejah” and play tug of war with the toys. She was last seen eating dinner and tearing up her new toy.

Kimberly Sheridan and Christopher Norris of Cooper City took the Davie Town Times with them on their honeymoon to Pikes Market in Seattle. Established in 1907 to connect citizens and farmers, the Market is home to more than 200 independent small businesses. It continues its “Meet the Producer” tradition with a year-round farmers market and locally owned bakeries, seafood, dairy and butcher shops. We wish Kimberly and Christopher lots of happiness in their new marriage.
