Back-to-School Time is Here

S

ummer is the time to relax and unwind; reju -

venate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Although we still have a few weeks left of the “lazy days of summer,” we’ll be back-to-school before we know it. It seems like the stores started stocking school supplies within minutes of pulling the leftover July 4th sparklers off the shelves. As we work through the school supply lists, buy new school clothes and get the school physicals done, our kids will soon realize that their summer school vacation is quickly coming to an end. They are starting to look forward to seeing their school friends again. On rare occasions, we might even catch them picking up a book on their own. Before we know it, we will be getting back to our school-time routine with early morning carpool, after-school activities and evening sports practices. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final days of summer break with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back-to-school, again! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Indian Dance Group to Perform “Sleeping Beauty” By Debby Teich

it is abstract and obscure,” said Artistic Director Ranjana Warier. “There are symbolisms and complex codes and if you are not familiar with all these details, it’s hard to stay engaged. This dance drama puts customs into a story that people already know very well. Instead of highlighting the differences, the performance will show our similarities.” The Rhythms School of Dance received a $25,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to help offset the cost of the two performances. “Few things like the arts can bring people together, providing the kinds of collective experiences that build great communities,” said Dennis Scholl, VP/ Arts at Knight Foundation. “By providing a hybrid performance, the Rhythms School of Dance will provide a way for our diverse community to connect and celebrate all that our various cultures have to offer.” As a 2012 Knight Arts Challenge Miami winner, Warier brought together a team of six professional Indian classical dancers and 40 advanced students for the production. five other dance schools: Nrutyanjali School of Dance (Parkland), Vanee School of Dance (Miami), Nritya Surabhi School of Dance (Pembroke Pines), Narthana Dance Academy (Parkland) and Navarasa Dance Academy (Tampa). The group has been rehearsing for the past nine months. The colorful and high energy show is ideal for all ages and has a surprise twist at the end. It includes English narration to help make the show easier to understand. All of the costumes were designed and stitched in India. Many of the props also come from India. The grant also provides for workshops at local libraries, museums and other venues. understand how heartbreaking it can be. Your confidence waivers and you just do not feel like yourself. You’ve tried sprays, shampoos, comb-overs, foam, medication and vitamins in an attempt to cover up the obvious. At the Hair Restoration Institute, we know how frustrating and lonely this journey can be. We are committed to bringing you the permanent hair loss solution.

No Slit. No Scars. No Pain. Re-Grow Lost Hair the Natural Way.

The Hair Restoration Institute specializes in the future of hair restoration technology, offering the most naturally-looking solution for those with pattern baldness or thinning hair. The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a unique FDA approved technique, minimally invasive, eliminating the use of scalpels, staples and anesthesia. It simply harvests individual hair follicles from the back of the head where hair growth is dominant to be carefully re-implanted into the balding or thinning targeted areas, providing a natural redistribution.

After

Before

No stitches • No additional procedures• Fast Recovery Time

The hair transplant is a single day, outpatient procedure performed with the patient fully awake. A skilled specialist at the Hair Restoration Institute works meticulously and artistically to ensure the health and appropriate position of each transplanted hair. The inserted hairs are permanent and will grow in their new location. Other traditional hair restoration methods require a surgical line to be made in the back of the head placed from ear to ear to extract the donor’s hair, resulting in an evident permanent scar on the back of the scalp. FUE not only eliminates the scarring, but also ensures minimum downtime. Patients can expect to return to regular activity the next day. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette, the medical director of the Hair Restoration Institute, is dedicated to providing proven anti-aging techniques in Functional Medicine. With over 20 years of experience, he is able to give you the results you have been looking for. Dr. Nerette offers complimentary consultations to get you on your way to enjoying your own thicker, fuller hair with no slit, no scars and no pain. South Florida Cloggers Perform at Downtown Hoedown By Debby Teich

A

rea residents recently had an oppor -

tunity to show off their singing and dancing talents at the 1st Annual Downtown Hoedown, presented by the Town of Davie and the South Florida Cloggers at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The event included a “Davie Idol” singing contest, clogging demonstrations, line dancing, games, pie throwing contest, bull riding, silent auction, dinner and more. Rebecca Vetter, director, choreographer, lead instructor and the founder of the South Florida Cloggers, helped organize the event to raise money for the team. The South Florida Cloggers received a portion of the proceeds to help offset the cost of costumes and travel expenses for competitions. Clogging is an American dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains in the mid 1700’s. Originally a simple rhythmic dance accompanied by the fiddle and bluegrass music, it has evolved throughout the years to become a “melting pot” of step dances. It has been influenced by tap dancing, Canadian Step Dancing, Irish Hard Shoe, hip-hop and more. Today, it is performed to every type of music, as long as it has a beat. Rebecca has been clogging in Davie for more than 20 years. She has performed at a variety of Davie fairs, festivals and events. She has won national and state clogging competitions. Thirteen years ago, she started

teaching clogging in Davie. Two years ago, she formed the South Florida Cloggers. The South Florida Cloggers meet at Robbins Lodge. It is a family atmosphere, with students that range in age from 2 to 72. Rebecca’s “No one left behind policy” means that everyone has an opportunity to perform, including several disabled students. Mothers and daughters clog together, as well as entire families. During the season, from October to March, they perform several shows each weekend. “Clogging is aerobic, energizing, and exciting,” said Rebecca. “All you need to get started is a pair of shoes.” There are 30 members who participate in competitions as part of a performance team. They have won awards all over South Florida and in several states. They have performed in Ohio, Tennessee, Daytona, Tallahassee, Orlando, and all over South Florida. They were recently invited to open the show at Country Tonite in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. They are the only clogging team to perform in Disney twice and have been invited to be the only clogging team to perform in the Macy’s Day Parade at Universal Studios in December. For information, visit www.SouthFloridaCloggers.com or call 954-347-5207.

In March 2013, the South Florida Cloggers performed at the Smoky Mountain Encore competition in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and won first place in the age division. The routine was dedicated to fallen soldiers.

Edit Headline Davie Becomes A Certified Community Wildlife Habitat edit By Debby author Teich

A

s you drive through Davie , you may notice it is a little “greener.” After years of planting and educating, the Town of Davie recently became the 67th community in the nation and the 9th in the state of Florida to obtain the status of a National Wildlife Federation (NFW) Certified Community Wildlife Habitat. In order to become a Community Wildlife Habitat, the Town of Davie and its residents had to provide habitats for wildlife. The community also had to educate residents about sustainable gardening practices. The Town earned points from each certified property. At the time of certification, 14 schools, Town Hall, a business, a Boys and Girls Club, a farm, and 16 parks had become NWF Certified Wildlife Habitat sites. To help spread the word, the Town formed a Community Wildlife Habitat team called “WWIND” (Welcoming Wildlife into Natural Davie). The team organized booths at various festivals and recycling events. They talked to residents about the project and encouraged them to start their own gardens. They also created six different demonstration gardens at town parks and at the Davie Town Hall complex. “The driving force behind this initiative was the Town’s Mayor, Judy Paul,” said Davie Urban Forester Tim Lee, who is involved with the project. Mayor Paul, a pioneer in wildlife conservation, was one of the first in Davie to have a Certified Habitat at her home. It was also her idea to form the WWIND team. “This certification substantiates the commitment the Davie community has in preserving and protecting our environment,” said Mayor Paul. The property surrounding Mayor Paul’s home includes large canopy trees, fruit trees, butterfly gardens and more. She says that she spends hours each week watching hawks hunt, butterflies form, squirrels nest, woodpeckers play, and more. “My home is like a paradise,” said Mayor Paul. “When I come home from a long

day, I watch the wildlife and I am always amazed by what I see. It is rewarding to know that I am helping the environment and the animals.” In order to stay certified, the Town must show examples of new habitats each year. A certified garden can be large or small and is not difficult to create. All you need are elements from the following four areas: food sources (native plants, seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, nectar), water sources (birdbath, pond, water garden, stream), places for cover (thicket, rock pile, birdhouse) and places to raise young (dense shrubs, vegetation, nesting box, pond).

Mayor Judy Paul was one of the first Davie residents to have a Certified Habitat at her home.

For information about the WWIND team and how you can create a Certified Wildlife Habitat, contact Urban Forester Tim Lee at 954-797-1038 or visit www.nwf.org\wildlifegarden.

Rabbi Howard Needleman officially assumed the post at the Plantation Synagogue in July and led the congregation through his first Shabbat service July 12. It was the first step in what promises to be a busy year for the Rabbi. “My agenda right now is to prepare for the year, build relationships with people and to create an engaging worship environment, as well as a shared vision for the year with the community,’” Rabbi Needleman said. Rabbi Needleman comes to South Florida from Temple Beth David in Commack, New York, Rabbi Needleman said he was drawn to South Florida not only as a fantastic place to raise his family, but by a congregation with a rich history that had a strong vision for the future. “It was a natural fit,’ he said. “I found Rabbi Howard Needleman a dedicated leadership and a great partnership in the senior staff throughout the Synagogue.” Rabbi Needleman said he hopes to inspire a love of Judaism in others by creating a modern house of worship where people feel connected. He and temple lead-

ers bill it as a “new beginning” in keeping with today’s times. “Part of my vision is to create a modern reform temple that is both engaged in how we are within the Synagogue walls, with our worship, our learning and outreach to all that seek to make Kol Ami Emanu-El their spiritual home,” he said. To that end, Rabbi Needleman said the Synagogue will put a priority on making its spirituality and programming interactive for all generations, including the use of technology and social media to keep everyone connected. In order to create a “virtual relationship with the congregation before arriving in South Florida, the Rabbi created a blog so congregants could get to know him. The Rabbi also hopes to work within the broader community through Social Action and “Tikkun Olam” or projects that repair the world. Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El began the search for a new spiritual leader following the retirement of longtime senior Rabbi Sheldon Harr, who now serves as the “Founding Senior Rabbi Emeritus.” Before selecting a new Rabbi, temple leaders held a series of focus groups to learn what congregants wanted in a new leader. “Our Temple Family wanted a Rabbi who would connect with them and help them with their issues and Jewish spirituality as well as help our young parents to teach their children how to live with a Jewish perspective in today’s world. Rabbi Needleman was by far the leader in fulfilling that role. He is young, progressive and has the right combination of compassion, intellect, vision and spirituality to lead our Temple,” said Calvin Helitzer, the Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El President. When not working, Rabbi Needleman enjoys spending time with wife Beth and children Noah, 12, and Abby, 8. Look for him around South Florida riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle or playing in a competitive game of Ultimate Frisbee. Visit Rabbi Needleman’s Facebook page at Rabbi Howard Needleman, or his blog at www.rabbineedleman. com. A formal installation and gala is planned for November 1 and 2. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 08/31/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOu THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Davie Resident Helps Students Develop Reading Skills By Debby Teich

L

ynn S. Armbrecht of Davie has always been an avid reader . A s

a ReadingPal volunteer, she works with students to help them improve their reading and comprehension skills. She is hoping that they will learn to love the written word as much as she does. United Way of Broward County (UWBC) introduced the ReadingPals program last year to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of

third grade. The three-year initiative focuses on engaging, training and deploying volunteer “reading pals” to work with students in lower-performing schools to encourage and enhance early literacy. The program requires that volunteers dedicate one hour per week for 25 weeks to read to an individual student or in a small group. Volunteers spend several visits talking about each book, using Scholastic worksheets and discussion guides. After they are finished, the student gets to keep the book. Scholastic also provides books for some of the other children at the school. Lynn says that the first few times she met with her student, he was a little hesitant. By the end of the year, he was running up to her with hugs. “It is so rewarding to see the progress that my student has made since the inception of the ReadingPals Program,” said Lynn, who chairs the ReadingPals program. “Just spending one hour each week with him has improved his speech, reading comprehension and most importantly his self-confidence. The bond that we have formed has made a lasting impact in both of our lives.” Last year, approximately 100 volunteers, representing all ages and backgrounds, worked with students at four schools in Broward County. This year, UWBC is targeting twelve schools, including Flamingo Elementary in Davie, and it is hoping to double the number of volunteers. No experience is necessary; just a love of children and reading, as well as some patience. “It is not a cliché when we say to our volunteers, ‘We couldn’t have done it without you!’” said Kathleen Cannon, CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Our volunteers are so committed and such a wonderful force for positive change in this community. We owe them a debt of gratitude.” For information on ReadingPals or to volunteer, visit www.unitedwaybroward.org/readingpals or contact Adriana LeCorgne at 954-462-4850, ext. 164.

r . Alejandra Perez of Davie has been named a H ispanic Woman of Distinction. The prestigious award recognizes women whose work and commitment to the community has paved the way for other Latinas to achieve their goals. More than 65 woman received nominations from former Hispanic Women of Distinction honorees and community leaders and only 12 were selected. She will receive her award at the 12th Annual Women of Distinction luncheon held at the Signature Grand on August 16. Winners have achieved success in communications, medicine, education, government and business development. They include Congresswoman Ileana RosLehtinen, Maria San Juan, Columba Bush, Isabel Diaz, M.D., Caridad Asensio, Joyce Kaufman, Aida Levitan and many more. According to Elaine Miceli-Vasquez, luncheon producer, the common thread among all of the women is their American entrepreneurship intertwined with their values and traditions. She says that they represent a cross-section of creative disciplines that are changing the face of American culture. Dr. Perez has dedicated her life to the treatment and prevention of breast cancer. She is a medical oncologist and Director of the Breast Cancer Center, Memorial Healthcare System in Broward County. She Dr. Alejandra Perez is also Medical Director for the Memorial Cancer Institute. She is triple board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology. In 2004, she was recruited by Memorial to develop the breast cancer program, which currently takes care of more than 5,000 women in the community who have breast cancer or at risk of developing it. Memorial’s individualized Breast Cancer Program has become one of the largest providers of breast services in the state of Florida. Dr. Perez helped to put together a multidisciplinary team of experts to address each aspect of breast cancer care including treatment, surgical, physical, emotional, reproductive and nutritional needs. She participates in more than 100 events each year that are dedicated to breast cancer awareness and education for patients and health care providers. When asked to describe her feelings about the role that Hispanic women play in today’s society, she responded, “Our biggest contribution, without a doubt, is our love for family and our commitment to preservation of culture and values. We take care of our ‘own’ and our children are raised with a strong family ‘nucleus’ with hopes that they will carry this forward as they create their family unit.” She has many role models. At the top of the list is her mother, who had to flee from her homeland to provide safety for her family. She also admires Dr. Edith Perez, the leading female figure in the country in breast cancer, who has taken her and her team of young women physicians under her wing and offered them opportunities that normally would take a lifetime to garnish. She also looks up to Dr. Sandra Franco, who partnered with her to create the breast program at Memorial and later returned to Colombia to build the first center dedicated solely to breast cancer. Some of Dr. Perez’s many accolades include: Pink Angels Award 2013, Exceptional Achievement Award - American Cancer Society 2012, Martin Research Price for Excellence in Clinical Research – Harvard Medical School 2012, Top Doctors South Florida 2011, 2012 – Castle Connolly Medical, Florida Breast Cancer Foundation – South Florida Breast Cancer Champion 2011, and Deliver the Dream - Community Champion 2011. With it all, she says her biggest accomplishment is her family. She has been married for 21 years to Dr Daniel Perez. They have two children, Sofia, 14, and Tomas, 8.

S

tudents are often recognized for academics

and sports. For approximately 20 years, the Davie Police Department’s Student Citizen of the Month program has also been recognizing them for their outstanding civic and leadership qualities. The students who are selected are highly regarded by principals, teachers, and other students. Approximately 12 public and private schools participate in the program for elementary and middle school students. Six times a year, from October to April, teachers from each school choose two students that exhibit good citizenship by helping others in the class and community. The winners attend an award ceremony at the Davie Police Department. The Mayor and Chief of Police are present to hand out the certificates and other gifts from local business partners, such as school supplies, pizza, or a smoothie.

PSASA Dorothy Ross says that the winners are good role models for other students. “They help build moral in the schools, at home, and in the community,” said Ross. “They make themselves available to aid others in the community and to assist other students and teachers in class.” Elementary or middle schools interested in participating in the Student Citizen of the Month program should contact Dorothy Ross at the Davie Police Department at 954-693-8378.

I

t is true that for many years braces have been

as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically. In 2010, the American Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s. One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a concern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment. Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know that as I approached 30 I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.” This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created that are dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plastered local advertising with new technologies that turn back the effects of time. From the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of “Invisalign,” has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients. Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages as well as challenges with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be possible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Some of the reasons for an increased length of treatment time include: the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, and a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease. The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or other dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accomplish these goals. In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you want to improve your smile and have teeth that fit together comfortably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Because of our inventory shortage and the strong number of cash buyers, this is a great time to put your home on the market. Of the 175 closed sales in the Davie-Cooper City area, 43 are cash sales. There are only 282 active properties (all types) on the market. There is only 2.9 months of inventory, indicative of a strong Sellers’ market. Some real estate experts, investment and market strategists project home values to end 2013 up an average of 4.6% according to the first quarter data. This is after they had projected a 3.1% increase just three months ago showing strong signs of a recovering market. However, pursuant to Steve Harney (kcmblog), “Strong momentum in home prices as well as housing activity gave Morgan Stanley analysts enough confidence to upgrade their home price appreciation projections to roughly 7% (from 5%) for 2013…” As mortgage rates rise and cash buyers level off, the market will level as well. 2013 is a stellar year to purchase and sell -- upsize or downsize. Legally Speaking

Why Is It Taking So Long? By Evan Baron

I

can always count on a prospective client ask-

ing me the following two questions at their initial consultation. How long will my divorce take? How much will it cost? In reality, the answer to the second question is directly related to the answer to first question. Since attorney’s fees for divorce cases are based upon time spent by the attorney, the cost will vary from case to case. The more complex the case, the longer it usually takes and, therefore. the more it will cost. The more litigation in a case, the more time it will take and, therefore, the more it will cost. I often tell a client that how quickly a case gets resolved is really up to them. The quicker they can reach an agreement, the quicker they can be divorced. Once an agreement is signed by the parties, it is literally a matter of weeks until a Final Judgement granting the divorce can be issued by a Judge. However, what if there is not a quick settlement? What if there are issues which need to be litigated? How long can someone expect a divorce to continue until they get to a final resolution? Unfortunately, sometimes the answers to these questions are not in the control of the attorney. In addition, Florida law provides for certain deadlines, which must be followed.

When a Petition for Dissolution is filed (the original document), it is usually served upon the other spouse. This process can take a week or more depending on a number of factors, such as the process servers’ ability to locate the individual. The Florida Courts have recently converted to E-filing and this has also caused a delay in receiving documentation back from the Clerk’s Office. Once served, the spouse has twenty days to respond in writing. If the response contains a counter-petition, then another 20 days will be allowed for a subsequent response. At this point, the case is considered to be “at issue” and all initial pleadings have been filed. This is just the beginning stages and already approximately 6 weeks have passed. If we need time to litigate any temporary issues, it could be weeks or months before we can obtain a court date. Judge’s dockets are full and it is simply a matter of first come, first served for a court date. No matter how much an attorney tries to get an earlier court date, the Judge only has a limited amount of time, due to his/her heavy caseload. So when I am asked, “Why is it taking so long?” I try my best to explain the various factors which cause delay. It is often times frustrating to me, I can only imagine how frustrating it is for the client. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Get Heart Smart Your heart is only the size of your fist, but it is the strongest muscle in your body. It’s your body’s engine, and it deserves to be taken care of. Many people don’t realize that they are not living a healthy heart life. Learning the risks of heart disease can help you be your own heart health advocate.

What are the risk factors for heart disease? An estimated 17.1 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year, according to the World Heart Federation. There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “non-modifiable risk factors,” cannot be changed, but some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Modifiable risk factors Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan. Abnormal blood lipid levels, which is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile. Tobacco use, either smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well. Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle. Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Type II diabetes is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

What can you do you improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action by changing your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health. For the past 19 consecutive years, U.S.News & World Report has Viviana Navas, MD named Cleveland Clinic in Ohio the Cleveland Clinic Florida, Cardiologist top medical center in the United States for the treatment of heart disease. Cleveland Clinic Florida is proud to be part of such an impressive legacy of outstanding patient care. What Homeowners Need to Edit Headline Know about Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law edit author

By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

fter a two year effort, Florida legislators approved a new

foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process.

For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember that you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment. In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

ne of the most difficult things that

Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage. The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage the knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability. Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They complain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, changing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office Transplant Of Cartilage and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings or the symptoms persist or they do not resolve, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Articular Cartilage Damage Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage damage (botton photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries. If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnormal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and required a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alternatives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery). The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondroplasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Back to School Safety

The World’s Favorite Newspaper™

M

ore than a quarter of a million students

will be returning to schools across Broward County on Monday, August 19. As a parent of high school-age triplets, my wife, Susan, and I can relate to the demands of getting children ready for the school year. Amid the commotion of the season, it is important to always remember our number one back-to-school priority: keeping kids safe. As we approach the start of the 2013-14 school year, I encourage you to talk with your children about safety and share with them these important tips: ▸▸ If your child is walking to or from school, walk the route with them beforehand. Choose the most direct way, and be sure the route has sufficient sidewalks, lighting and crossing guards. Absent a crossing guard, be sure your child knows when it is safe to cross the street. ▸▸ Make sure your child walks to and from school with other trusted schoolmates and follows the tried and true axiom, “Never talk to strangers.” ▸▸ Teach your kids to obey all traffic signals when walking or biking to school. ▸▸ When biking, be sure your child has a helmet and appropriate safety pads. ▸▸ When waiting for the school bus, always stand on the curb away from the roadway. Always remain seated while on the bus. ▸▸ Be sure your child knows a phone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency. Being hit by a car poses the greatest threat to any child walking or riding a bicycle to school. As drivers, it is our responsibility to avoid dangerous distractions behind the wheel. Pay attention near crosswalks and areas around schools where children could potentially run into the roadway. Sending a text message or reading an email is not worth the risk of a potential tragedy. The back-to-school season gives drivers a good opportunity to freshen up on the rules of the road. Florida law prohibits passing a school bus in either direction when it is stopped with its red lights flashing. Drivers must also remember to slow down to the posted speed limit in school zones. The Broward Sheriff’s Office does not tolerate negligent actions that could harm our community’s children. Anyone caught passing a stopped school bus or speeding in a school zone can expect to be stopped and cited accordingly. In recent years, cyberstalking and bullying, via a cell phone and/or computer, have also become a threat to our children’s safety. These methods of bullying bring peer intimidation outside the walls of the school and into the home. Monitoring your child’s social media accounts should be a priority. Controlling the bullying in our culture requires a collective undertaking of communication between teachers, parents and children. No incident of bullying should ever go unreported. You should immediately contact a teacher, school administrator or law enforcement officer. You can also make an anonymous report to Broward County Public Schools. Call the school district’s Emergency/Silence Hurts Tip Line at 754-321-0911, send an email to school911@browardschools.com or send a text to CRIMES 274637 (message MUST begin with SBBC). For more information about their anti-bullying policy, please visit http://www.browardschools.com/ schools/bullying.htm. As parents, teachers and community leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure our children’s safety. Remember, as we approach the busy back-to-school season, speak to your children about important safety tips. Be mindful on the roadways and avoid unnecessary distractions. Together we can make the 2013-14 school year safe and successful. For more information, visit www.sheriff.org or call 954-831-8900.

International Dance Academy is Simply the Best!

A

nticipation for yet another year of

spectacular success is in the air at International Dance Academy (IDA) as it prepares for the new season. This prestigious educational dance center certainly raised the bar yet again last year. Not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out with over 7,000 people attending the full-scale, professional production, but its spring performance is becoming equally respected as a ‘must-see’ theater experience. Fairy Tale Classic, danced in May, provided exquisite entertainment for all ages. “What puts IDA head and shoulders above the rest?” one asks. “Many reasons,” says Deborah Buttner, Artistic Director. “Our discipline and love of pure classical ballet, attention to detail, incredible staff, but perhaps most of all,

we place emphasis on taking what is learned in the classroom to the professional stage.” She continues, “Children are highly motivated, learn confidence in themselves, are educated in technique, mostly in the French language. They are exposed to magnificent music by the masters and experience the valuable lessons and excitement of the stage and backstage. Plus, each dancer experiences the camaraderie of friends.” “The dancers of IDA grow and benefit in many, many ways from the experience,” states Deborah. “Fully realizing that not every child becomes a ballerina, our students all graduate as young ladies able to manage their time, have excellent work ethics, and excel in every walk of life.” International Dance Academy is successfully led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Director Mary Buttner. These ladies are highly respected dancers, teachers and choreographers with strong international classical ballet backgrounds Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet Graduate Program. She trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. “I believe that demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” explains Deborah, who continues to

grace the professional stage with her exceptional talent. Most recently, she danced the lead role in Bardo with her partner, Eriberto Jimenez. He is a master teacher/choreographer/partnering specialist at IDA. The exquisite piece of music was composed by her brother, Greg Buttner. “Dancing to my own brother’s music creation with my amazing students, most of whom I have taught since a very young age, was undoubtedly one of the most special moments of my life,” says Deborah proudly. Abbey Kay, one of the principal dancers, is now a contracted ballerina with the Sarasota Ballet. Bardo can be viewed on the IDA website (www.danceIDA.com). A new album of exquisite, original music composed by Greg Buttner and played by “Imprints” will soon be launched. See details on www. Imprintsmusic.com and the IDA website.

Florida’s proven premier Ballet School. In addition to the directors who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts an exceptionally trained international faculty, acknowledged as superior in the area. IDA has proven, through 14 years of service to the community, to be South Florida’s premier ballet school, and offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. IDA is simply the best, taking the dancer from class to professional stage with excellent results. Fall classes, which begin on August 19th, are offered six days a week for all levels of dancers. Class choices include Ballet, Pointe, Partnering and Repertoire; Jazz and Contemporary; as well as Yoga for adults, teens and children. Also offered is the popular TuTu Cuties, a morning mommy-and-me style class for two and three-year-olds. For adults, the academy offers classical ballet classes and yoga at beginner through intermediate levels; the studio is also home to the popular daily Jazzercise adult exercise program. IDA offers the most exciting Partnering and Repertoire classes to dancers on Pointe; an enormous thrill for the dancer in training to partner with an experienced male dancer. Amazing lifts, turns and poses are a dream come true. IDA does not use young trainees, but chooses to have only experienced professionals to safely train their dancers. Rolly Villaverde is the studio’s phenomenal Jazz and Contemporary teacher, offering world-class choreography and tuition to IDA students. Also included is a “Boys Only Class,” for ages four to seven, for Strengthening and Movement. Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Certification. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance instruction and certification. RAD is the most highly-regarded educational training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded certification. “Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credentials put our dancers at a great advantage,” states Mary. “Besides the diploma being an impressive addition to any college application, the dancers also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met the most rigorous international standards in dance”.

International RAD examination and results. A number of students were evaluated this past year by a qualified examiner and all scored extraordinary well. IDA enjoyed a 100% pass rate with ten medals for the little ones, 12 Merits and 36 Distinction. “Year after year, we are in awe of our exceptional RAD results including an unheard of 100% by Seoyeon Kim,” notes Mary. Open House Invitation – Come dressed for a fun day of dance on Saturday, August 10th from 1-4 pm. The open house will feature free ballet classes, free jazz classes, refreshments, plus a chance to meet the directors, teachers and staff. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of registration elsewhere. Summer Intensive. Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 12-16th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. Visiting dancers are most welcome! Annual Theatrical Performances. As part of a child’s all-round education and development, the performing company, the International Ballet Company, is established to offer full-length professional performances, rather than recitals or non-descript studio shows. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that comes with performing on stage in a spectacular and professional, full-length theater production, before an appreciative audience,” explains Deborah. Two annual theatrical performances are danced before packed audiences giving the dancers the opportunity to showcase their hard work and allowing them to shine in front of family and friends.

The Nutcracker will be performed at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, December 13-15th. “We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy,” says Deborah. This will be the Company’s 14th performance of this holiday spectacle and this year’s production promises to be bigger and better than ever. In addition to a cast of over 150 talented dancers, from three years old to professional, the production will feature fabulous costumes, extravagant scenery and spectacular stage effects. It is an unbelievable experience for all young dancers with memories to treasure forever! Auditions to take part in The Nutcracker will be held on September 7th.

The International Dance Academy has no equal! The family-friendly, 5,500 square foot, teaching facility includes three studios, a large foyer, observation windows, sprung floors, all fully air conditioned. It also offers easy and safe drop-off/pick-up at the front door. FREE TRIAL CLASS! You are most WELCOME! International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston.
