Back-to-School Time is Here
W
hile the heat and humidity are still with
us, summer vacations are quickly fading into memory and the kids are settling back into their school routines. With the football season kicking into high gear, our life is slowly returning to ‘normal’. Before we get too busy with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let’s not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun in the sun. The ocean waters are warm and beautiful and with the summer vacationers gone, the beaches are less crowded. Turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit, put down the phone for a while, and get out there to enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit St. Augustine (the oldest town in North America), get out on a boat and catch some fish, or visit the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whichever activity you choose, make sure you do it together with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from loved ones for most of the day to attend school and work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever possible. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Cooper City Ranks Ninth on List of Top Booming Suburbs By Debby Teich
C
ooper City has earned the reputation of being called “Someplace Special.” Coldwell Banker Real Estate has confirmed that once again. It recently announced the results of its “Top Booming Suburbs” survey and Cooper City was ninth on the list. Coldwell Banker partnered with Onboard Informatics, a leading provider of trusted real estate information and technology solutions. They identified places
that offer the best of the suburban lifestyle, with single family homes, backyards for barbeques and good opportunities for steady employment. They rated 1,500 communities based on 15-20 attributes, including access to suburban amenities (grocery stores, banks, etc.), proximity to good schools, commuting by car, outdoor activities, affordable gas, and community safety. Additional attributes included a low unemployment score, growth in employed persons, and positive change over time in employment (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). According to the survey, there are a variety of factors that helped Cooper City achieve such a high ranking, including its strong and vibrant sense of community. It has the fourth highest median household income in Broward County. It is also home to Brian Piccolo Park, which has tennis courts, multi-purpose fields, a skate park and one of the few cycling tracks in South Florida, as well as one of the best cricket grounds in the United States. Carol Hammerman has lived in Cooper City for five years and is not surprised by the results. “I think Cooper City is the greatest place to live and work,” said Carol. “I cannot imagine living anywhere else.” For information on the survey, visit bestplaces.coldwellbanker.com. Town Edit Headline of Davie Searches for Purple Heart Recipients edit By Debby author Teich
D
avie Mayor J udy Paul and the Davie Town
Valerie Holden will submit the name of her father, who received a Purple Heart. “I think it is wonderful that the Town of Davie is recognizing the men and women who fought for our freedom,” said Valerie. “I am so proud of my father and his dedication to our wonderful country.” The Town also plans to participate in the Purple Heart Trail program. The purpose of the Trail is to create a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments that pay tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. It is a visual reminder for those who use the road system that others have paid a high price for their freedom, allowing them to travel and live in a free society.
Council recently adopted a resolution that recognizes the Town of Davie as a Purple Heart Community. Now the Mayor is searching for Davie Purple Heart recipients and the families of those awarded posthumously, so they can receive a special award at the Town’s Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11. “It is our duty as Americans to honor, respect, and acknowledge the heroic actions of the men and woman who carry the Purple Heart distinction,” said Mayor Paul. “While we recognize all veterans on Veterans Day, we want to especially honor the Purple Heart heroes.” The Purple Heart, the United States military’s oldest decoration, is given to those who die or become wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy. The Purple Heart is also awarded posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action. It was initially created as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington in 1782, and is the first American service award or decoration made available to the common solider.
Davie Purple Heart recipients or the families of those awarded posthumously should contact Mayor Paul at 954-797-1030, or send an email to judy_paul@ davie-fl.gov. Include recipient’s name, mailing address, phone number, email address, branch of service, years served, and any other details you may want to share.

Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman Inspires TAG USA Gymnasts
I
Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman visited with TAG USA gymnasts.
n celebration of taG USa GymnaSticS’ firSt athlete to win a national championShip, owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan invited Olympic superstar Aly Raisman to visit the gym. During her two-day stay, Aly worked with TAG USA gymnasts and helped raise funds for the TAG USA Foundation. Aly won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She won an individual gold medal for the floor and shared in the Team USA gold medal win. Prior to the Olympics, Aly won a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships and a silver at the 2010 World Championships.
While working closely with approximately 80 members of TAG USA’s Compulsory (levels 2-6) and Optional (levels 7-10) competitive team, Aly shared advice on what it takes to become a champion. She spoke to the girls about her training as a young gymnast, as well as her experiences at the Olympics. Aly also led training groups during which she spotted and offered tips to the TAG USA gymnasts on their beam, bar, vault and floor events. She also took time to visit with the hundreds of young children taking part in TAG USA’s Summer Sports Camp. Aly greeted over 200 campers and took group photos TAG USA Foundation founder Marissa Zoldan with them. with Olympian Aly Raisman. In addition, Aly demonstrated to the young gymnasts the importance of philanthropy and helping others who are less fortunate. She signed autographs and took pictures with over 100 young athletes. This fundraiser generated more than $2,500 in donations for the TAG USA Foundation. Established by Marissa Zoldan, the TAG USA Foundation helps families affected by cancer by providing food, clothing, and other necessities. Throughout the year, the gym hosts numerous collection drives to support local charities. Most recently, TAG USA collected school supplies for Kids In Distress.

Kiwanis Club of Cooper City Continues to Support EASE Foundation By Debby Teich
Members of the Cooper City High School Key Club collected food for the Ease Foundation.
A
rea residents recently indulged in
some of their favorite foods at the Cooper City Food Truck Rally. The event also provided an opportunity for the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City, with the help of Cooper City High School Key Club, to collect food for those in need. The club donated several boxes of canned goods, as well as gift cards for Publix and Winn Dixie, to the EASE (Emergency Assistance Service Effort) Foundation. The club collects food for the EASE Foundation at most of the special events in Cooper City. It is part of an ongoing effort to keep the food pantry stocked for

local families who need it. “There are still so many people in Cooper City and Davie who struggle to put food on their tables,” said Lydia Kruger, president of the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City. “It is our responsibility to help them.” Established by the business community and residents of Davie, the EASE Foundation is a prime example of neighbor helping neighbor. The nonprofit’s motto is “a hand up, not a hand out,” since it focuses on residents who have experienced a temporary setback and are trying to “ease” their way back into a self-sustaining, productive life. Their hardship is often the result of an emergency, accident, illness, job loss, home or car repairs. Throughout the year, the Foundation also reaches out to the homeless with food, clothing and hygiene supplies. The Foundation works in Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding Southwest Broward unincorporated areas for financial services. Helping the EASE Foundation is just one of the many ways that the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City has recently reached out to the community. The club donated over $500 worth of new sports equipment to the Rick & Rita Case Boys and Girls Club of Broward County to use

in its new gymnasium. During the annual “Christmas in July” project, the Kiwanis Club sponsored a day of fun at the BB&T Center. Members served lunch and distributed backpacks filled with shoes, clothing, toys, diapers, and school supplies to over 1,000 children living in Broward County group homes, shelters, and foster care. The club also donated 500 shoe boxes to the Broward County Humane Society, which will be used to create “beds” for the puppies, kittens, gerbils, and other small animals. Top 10 Causes of Hair Loss (Part 2) By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
I
n the J uly issue , we explained how the normal
hair growth cycle works and addressed the first three top causes for excessive hair loss: Telogen Effluvium, Hypothyroidism and Lupus. If you would like to read the full article, visit our website at www.bellissimomedical.com. This month, we will continue to talk about the top ten causes of hair loss by introducing three more important reasons. As we mentioned in the first part, everyone loses hair! Unfortunately, excessive hair loss may be a sign of a more serious condition and can affect men, women and children.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging
Here are three more causes for excessive hair loss: 4. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Up to five million women in the United States suffer from PCOS. The condition ranges from young women starting as early as 11 to women in their 50’s. PCOS is caused when a hormonal imbalance occurs, because the ovaries produce too many male hormones, also affecting estrogens and progesterone. Symptoms include facial hair growth, irregular periods, acne, and cysts on the ovaries. While you may experience hair loss, you may notice unwanted hair elsewhere on the body. A blood test which includes estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, DHEA, and sometimes an ovarian sonogram will help diagnose this disorder. What you can do? Traditional medicine will treat with a birth control pill, only temporarily fixing the hormonal issue. A certified Functional Medicine doctor will do more specialized testing and will correct the hormonal balance that is required for a healthy body. 5. Chemotherapy/Radiation - Drugs designed to kill cancer cells also poison the hair follicles and often result in total hair loss. Hair found on your scalp is most affected by the drug. This may cause the scalp to become tender, and the hair that continues to grow becomes dry and brittle. Hair loss typically begins after a few weeks; total hair loss normally occurs after 3-4 months. Approximately 3-4 months after the chemo treatment finishes, the hair begins to grow again. As hair grows back, it may be thinner and a different color, due to the absence or change of pigment. In most cases hair eventually returns to its original texture and color. What you can do? Treatment can be accelerated by making up for the lost minerals that were taken away during treatment, such as with IV Nutrition provided by a certified Functional Medicine Doctor. 6. Hereditary Hair Loss - This is the most common cause of hair loss. It is known as “Androgenetic alopecia”. When this condition occurs, it is because it was passed down from either one of your parents, or both! What you can do? Lessen the decreasing hair by applying Rogaine, for both men and women, all over the scalp. Men can also use Propecia. If this doesn’t meet your needs, then you can permanently treat your hair loss, by investing in hair implants. In the next issue, we’ll cover the final main causes of hair loss. In the meantime, if your condition has really been affecting you physically and emotionally, consider being evaluated by a functional medicine doctor who will get to the root of the problem, and assist you through the process of hair re-growth. For a permanent solution, the Hair Restoration Institute, located at Bellissimo Medical, offers the latest in hair restoration through a minimally invasive technology called Neograft. This revolutionary method allows for a quicker recovery with natural results and no visible scars. To schedule a free consultation, call 954-384-8989. Cooper City Breaks Ground on New Park By Debby Teich

s drivers pass the
southwest corner of Flamingo Road and Sterling Road, they may notice that the landscape is starting to look a little different. Construction has begun on a new park on the 27-acre field. The park, which still has no name, is scheduled to open in phases. “The park is part of the required development for Monterra,” said Mike Bailey, Director of Utilities/ City Engineer. Monterra is a new community that is located on the east side of Cooper City. A city code required the developer to provide recreational land. Since it was purchased, the earthwork phase of construction has been focused on increasing the property’s elevation, creating lakes and performing wetland mitigation. Once this phase is completed, the area will be seeded with grass and crews will move forward with the development of a 3.5 acre passive recreation area. Although plans are still not final, Bailey says that it will probably contain some walkways, native plant species and

pavilions. It should be open in the next 12 to 18 months. While the passive area is under construction, the City has been talking to stakeholders and City Commissioners to determine what to do with the remaining 17 acres that has been designated as an active area. Bailey says that it will probably include parking, restrooms, a vender station and some sports facilities. Although a final decision has not been made, Bailey says that they are leaning toward a soccer field with artificial turf. Lily Vasquez, who lives near the park, is excited for it to open. “For so long, we have wondered when the construction would begin and now it is finally happening,” said Lily. “My children and I are thrilled that there will be a park so close to us. My son is a big soccer player, so I am hoping there will be several soccer fields.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org

Dance Theatre’s Experienced Staff Offers High Quality, Fun Dance Education
D
ance Theatre has become a local
institution by helping dancers hone their skills, and follow their dreams. With several locations serving communities throughout South Florida and beyond, Dance Theatre’s commitment to excellence has propelled it to new heights, and according to owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, they’re just getting started.“We have learned so much over the past twenty years about our schools, our students, their parents and about how best to instill in young dancers a love and passion to last a lifetime. We are definitely still getting better each and every year” says Michelle. “We continue to improve our program and add new dimensions to serve the needs of our dancers. One example is our brand new dance company, started this past year. Although our DTX Competition Team has long afforded students the opportunity to compete, our new DTC Dance Company provides a way for other students, primarily interested in performance opportunities, to venture out into the community, entertain audiences, and gain valuable experience.” Dance Theatre also continues to improve upon its already stellar staff of dance instructors. This year they welcome the renowned Kate Hadfield, Director of her own professional dance company, Movement Continuum, and winner of numerous choreography awards throughout the nation. Kate will join the staff full-time in the fall, and will specialize in contemporary and jazz dance. In addition, Daniel Sarabia, gold medalist at the prestigious International Ballet Competition in Havana, Cuba, and former Miami City Ballet dancer, has joined the staff and already begun teaching at summer intensives. “If you’ve never seen their work, go check them out on YouTube, pick your jaw up off the floor, and come get registered for their classes. They are phenomenal!” says Michelle. Speaking of phenoms, Michelle herself certainly has the pedigree to run South Florida’s most successful dance program. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her father Bob, that thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and The Smother’s Brothers. Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance schools, the Academy of Ballet Arts, practicing and perfecting her craft, and then proceeded to earn both a degree in Dance from the Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University. She then embarked upon a profession career which included performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. If all that isn’t enough to convince prospective dancers who are on the fence about where to train, consider this. Dance Theatre has consistently garnered both the “Best of the West” and “Reader’s Choice” awards for outstanding service by a dance studio. In addition, they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 2 and a half through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes
22
in every possible discipline including the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. Finally, Dance Theatre is now home to both the awardwinning DTX Competition Team, and the brand new DTC dance company, to provide students both competitive and performance opportunities as they grow and come of age. Easy to see why over fifty thousand dancers have made Dance Theatre their home away from home. Will you be the next?
Whether you choose to compete with the Dance Theatre X-treme Team (top), perform with the Dance Theatre Company (middle) or just take classes for enjoyment (bottom), Dance Theatre has something for everyone.

Wild Things Exhibit at Young At Art Appeals to Kids of All Ages By Debby Teich
F
or fifty years ,
children and adults have enjoyed renowned illustrator/author Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. In fact, many agree that it is one of the most beloved children’s books ever written. Through September 15, the public is invited to explore “Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures,” at the Young At Art Museum in Davie. The exhibit celebrates Sendak’s books, illustrations and unique characters, while encouraging children of all ages to explore their own imaginations. “We are very excited to host our inaugural national traveling exhibition at the new Young At Art Museum, shown in conjunction with artist Pepe Mar, whose fanciful work is reminiscent of Maurice Sendak’s” said Young At Art Museum Executive Director/CEO Mindy Shrago. “The works of Sendak continue to delight children and families through his uniquely creative characters. Where the Wild Things Are celebrates his books and illustrations, while encouraging visitors of all ages to let loose their imaginary powers.” In 2003, YAA had the exhibit for the first time at the old location. The Museum brought it back so that a new generation of children could experience it. “A lot of our parents grew up enjoying Sendak’s books and are now reading them to their children,” said Marketing Manager Sandra Trinidad. Sandra says that the exhibit creatively combines art, the written word and music, and also features many original drawings, photos, writings and autobiographical details about the author. YAA put its own spin on the national exhibition through creative art stations, such as making your own Wild Things puppet, creating a Max-inspired boat (which kids can sail at the WonderScapes water table), silk screening a “monster” friend, painting your own dreamscape (Sendak was fascinated by his dreams and fantasy life which filled his books), and much more. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will enjoy: ▸▸ Chicken Soup Bowl & Kitchen: Visitors can slide into a bowl full of foam soup and rice, stuffed carrots and rubber chickens or bake an imaginary meal in the kitchen designed from Sendak’s book In the Night Kitchen. ▸▸ Wild Things Fun Mirror: Wild things come to life when visitors don the costumes of their favorite Sendak characters. ▸▸ Rosie’s Stoop: Families can read Sendak’s
28
books on the front steps of Rosie’s Brooklyn Brownstone, based on the book Really Rosie. ▸▸ Musical Masterpiece: Sendak created his books while listening to Mozart and Beethoven. In this interactive station, visitors can design unique masterpieces while listening to classical music. Ali and Zack Spechler from The Bedlam Lorenz Assembly, Young At Art’s contemporary arts and alternative projects group, also curated PEPE MAR 2005-2013, an exhibition of 21 of the Miami artist’s works, which runs concurrently with Where the Wild Things Are. Fascinated by dreams and fantasy life, Mar’s works mirror common themes with Sendak. Mar’s vibrant, large anthropomorphic collage constructions of creature-like figures are delicately woven together, with articles including printed clippings and found objects. YAA’s next major exhibit, “Zap! Pow! Bam! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 19381950,” runs from October 12 to January 5. The national traveling exhibition explores the origin and popularity of beloved icons, including Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, and Captain

Davie Students Get Cookin’ with Fire Safety Essay/Poster Contest By Debby Teich
M
ore fires start in the
kitchen than in any other part of the home. This month, elementary school students throughout Davie will be learning how to prevent those fires, as they compete in the Town of Davie Fire Rescue/Fire Prevention Bureau’s 17th Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay and Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.” “The contest is designed to contribute to the education of our children and their families, as well as our local merchants,” said Betty Daly-Hilsman, who coordinates the contest. “They learn about fire awareness, safety and prevention.” Fire Prevention recently extended invitations to all Davie schools, both public and private, for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Students in grades K-3 will create posters, while those in grades 4-5 will write essays. According to the rules, all of the work must reflect this year’s theme and cannot be larger than 12” X 12.” Teachers will select one winner from each grade. Approximately 50 winners and their families will be invited to an awards ceremony at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center on October 11. The Town Administrator, Mayor, Town Council, Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and other Fire Department officials typically attend the event, which is hosted by Fire Marshal Tony Precanico. The students will receive trophies, backpacks, certificates, contest t-shirts, fire prevention and safety items, and information. The winning entries will be displayed at the Center during Fire Prevention Week. “The students are so proud
when they see their entries hanging on the wall,” said Daly-Hilsman. Throughout the month of October, Fire Prevention will visit schools to make presentations and demonstrate the fire trucks and equipment. DalyHilsman says that they receive many requests and recommends calling as soon as possible to schedule a visit. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2010, U.S. fire department responded to an estimated 44,900 fires that were started by someone, usually a child, playing with fire. Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, typically by playing with matches and lighters, and are also most likely to die in them. If you have a cooking fire, the NFPA recommends: ▸▸ Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. ▸▸ Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave. ▸▸ If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out. ▸▸ Keep a lid nearby when you are cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. ▸▸ For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 09/30/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Davie Teen Rides Her Way to the Top in Germany By Debby Teich
R
ebecca Whittaker of Davie was only
six years old when she discovered her passion for riding and set her sights on the Olympics. After winning 2nd place at the German Friendships riding competition, the Western High School senior has once again proven that she is on her way to achieving her goal. Rebecca trains at the International Equestrian Center in Southwest Ranches. This summer, she spent two weeks in Black Forest, Germany with several other riders from her barn. The group rode day and night, went to local horse shows, and trained with Fritz Pape, a well-known German rider. After it ended, Rebecca, along with her trainer and three riders (Clara Vidal, Alex Piussan, Sebastian Piussan) from her barn, traveled to Herford for the German Friendships competition. Although Rebecca had participated in several international competitions at home, this was the first time she competed abroad. Approximately 140 riders from 35 nations gathered for the sixday competition and each one was paired with a German rider. Rebecca and her partner, Annika Roede, trained together and competed as a team in the Junior Division. On Day 1, Rebecca and Annika won 3rd place during warm ups. On Day 2, Rebecca tried a new bit for her bridle to gain more control. She had one rail down and her partner was clean. They won 3rd place. On Day 3, they upped their game. Both had clean runs and Rebecca’s time was the fastest. They were named “Overall Reserve Champions.” “It felt great to win,” said Rebecca. “We fought
34
hard and focused on putting in a clean round.” Rebecca says that her experience at German Friendships was about much more than just riding. Rebecca spent a lot of time with Annika and her family and she is hoping that they will visit her in

Davie. She also developed friendships with people from Singapore, Mexico, Australia and many other countries. “I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to compete in Germany,” said Rebecca. “It was such an incredible experience. Everyone was so welcoming. My success in Germany gave me the confidence I needed for the upcoming season.” Since returning home, Rebecca has continued her regimen of riding six days a week – morning, afternoon and evening. She recently leased a new horse, Omar, and has already developed a close bond with him. She plans to compete in the Low Juniors and will dedicate much of her senior year of high school to training. “Riding is such an incredible sport,” said Rebecca. “It requires a lot of hard work and discipline. I know that there are no short cuts and I will have to work my way up. I have made up my mind that it is what I want to do.” Rebecca’s trainer, Daniela Roy, believes that she has what it takes to be successful. “Becky is a very special girl,” said Daniela. “While she is one of our most accomplished riding students, she is never boastful when she wins. She always compliments and supports the rest of our team and leads by quiet example. Everyone is encouraged by her warm smile and gracious attitude. Her drive and ambition are exceeded only by the work ethic that she displays in every aspect of her riding.” Rebecca is hoping to attend Brown University next year as a member of its Division One riding team. She also wants to become a professional rider. Ultimately, she is hoping to become a member of the United States Olympic Equestrian Team.

Justin returned to Nassau over Thanksgiving with his father, Diane, Ron and some others to set up and open the labs. They are currently in the process of setting up a fourth lab, which will bring the total to nearly 60 new computers. “As we finished setting up the first lab, the eager children were already waiting to start their first lesson,” said Justin. “I was so excited to know that, even from day one, so many children wanted to learn computer skills. Their lives were changing with the new opportunities and possibilities. Some of them might even explore careers in computer science or computer engineering.” This summer, Justin took advantage of another opportunity to make a difference in his own community. He volunteered for HANDY (Helping Abused, Neglected, and Disadvantaged Youth), which runs a technology camp at the Lauderdale Lakes Middle

The high school senior, who attends David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, has been sharing his knowledge with other students at home, as well as throughout the world, and making a difference in their lives. Justin first learned how to program by using Scratch, which allows users to program their own interactive stories, games, and animations and share them with others in the online community. While visiting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he had the opportunity to meet Professor Mitch Resnick, who created Scratch. Resnick inspired him to begin teaching the program to others.

During a chance meeting, Diane Cacciatore, co-founder of Women Saving Women Ministries in Weston, and her husband Ron told Justin about their passion for outreach and renewal in the Bahamas and shared some of their on-going projects. “At that moment, we realized that this was the chance to make a difference in underserved neighborhoods in the Bahamas by teaching them the technology skills necessary for sustainable employment,”
“I am grateful to my father, who helped me explore my passion for technology,” said Justin. “I want to make sure that other kids have the same opportunity.” Two years ago, Justin started a computer camp at Posnack’s Middle School during his lunch period to teach the students how to use Scratch. On any given day, approximately 10 to 25 kids show up to learn how to create school projects, control characters, make math games, and more. When Justin walks down the halls, the kids often stop him to talk about the things they have been doing on the computer on their own. He has been working with the school principal to turn the lunchtime club into an elective. “Many of these kids did not know anything about programming before I met them,” said Justin. “Now they have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. The enjoyment I got from that experience led me to the realization that, by combining my technology skills

Peripheral Neuropathy Overview
P
eripheral neuropathy is a nerve disorder that involves
damage to the peripheral nervous system, the nerve network that transmits information to and from the brain to other parts of the body, such as your hands and feet. Peripheral nerves are critical to letting the brain know about issues like pain, heat, and cold. Peripheral neuropathy may involve a wide array of symptoms due to the fact that each nerve in our bodies has a very specialized function. It also depends on the extent of the damage to the nerve.
• Numbness & Cramping • Can’t Sleep Due To Leg Pain

Treating Peripheral Neuropathy As a general rule, the current medical standard of care for Peripheral Neuropathy is designed more to alleviate symptoms than to attempt a cure. Symptoms can frequently be controlled through a wide range of treatments. Some traditional peripheral neuropathy approaches include: ▸▸ Oral Pain Medications ▸▸ Healthy Lifestyles ▸▸ Alternative Treatments ▸▸ Medical Equipment ▸▸ Topicals

▸▸ Physical Therapy ▸▸ Surgery The current standard of care would appear to be minimally effective at best, and some of these therapies can aggravate the condition. By contrast, Florida Medical’s clinically proven treatments are designed around one key clinical observation: peripheral nerves have the ability to regenerate, as long as the nerve cell itself has not been killed. larly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird, and Monsters Inc.) and the toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. There are 300 dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care.

After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar, which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then, it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients, as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call (954) 236-3434.

his is a follow up to my last article in the
August issue (www.DavieTownTimes.com, page 42), “Your Buying Power May Become Challenged!” Through recent research and webinars, I now have information that not only affects the buyers, but also the sellers. As you know, the ‘cost’ of a home is determined by two major components: the price of the home and the current mortgage rate. Both are on the rise. It is time to sell. It is time to buy. Home values may appreciate over the next five years to be between 12.3% (most pessimistic) and 32.8% (most optimistic). However, according to our local newspaper, prices may soften due to shadow inventory coming to the market. Historically, the average mortgage rate from 1972 until 2012 was 8.69%. Today’s mortgage rate is around 4.31%. According to Doug Duncan, Chief Economist at Fannie Mae, “I don’t think the Fed ultimately would be troubled with a 6.5% mortgage rate.” The annual difference in mortgage payment (P&I) on a $250,000 home loan if rates go from 4.5% to 6.5% would be $3,761.52. Therefore, if the right thing for you and your family is to purchase a home this year, buying sooner rather than later could lead to substantial savings. Currently, there are fifty-three homes in Davie and Cooper City priced under $250,000. Fifty-seven homes priced at $250,000 and below closed in the last ninety days. The $250,000 home will vanish in the very near future. The chart below shows how buying power is affected as rates continue to rise.

Yes, Mandatory Means Mandatory By Evan Baron
F
lorida has very specific rules concerning
financial discovery in a dissolution of marriage (divorce). The basic requirements are titled “Mandatory Financial Disclosure”. The term mandatory is obviously significant, in that it clearly implies that this is more than a suggestion. Sometimes clients don’t quite understand, or want to understand, that certain financial documents must be produced. Not only must they be produced, but the production must be timely. The financial disclosure requires the production of tax returns, W-2’s, check stubs or other proof of income, bank statements, credit card statements and other documents, which a person may or may not have in their possession. There are a total of 18 requests, which will not apply to every individual in every case. Since it is a standard form, approved by the Florida Supreme Court, it is not tailored to an individual or their particular financial situation. What does apply must be produced. In any event, it cannot be ignored.

As previously stated, the timeliness of the production is also mandatory. The time deadline is approximately 45 days from either the filing of the Petition or the service of the Petition if you are the Respondent. If the request is not filed on time, then motions to compel will be filed by opposing counsel requesting the disclosure to be produced within an additional 10 days. If after that extension the documents are still not produced, then additional motions will be filed with the court requesting possible sanctions (striking of pleadings) and the payment of opposing counsel’s attorney’s fees. This not only puts pressure upon a client and the attorney’s office, but results in additional and unnecessary attorney’s fees. Another main component of Mandatory Disclosure is the Financial Affidavit. Depending upon a person’s income, the affidavit will either be the “Short Form” or the “Long Form”. It is simply a breakdown of a person’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. The above is to be averaged over a 12 month period. As an example, add up your electric bill for the past 12 months and divide the total by 12. That will be your average monthly electric bill. For some unknown reason, this concept seems to totally overwhelm people. I am now requiring them to perform math, which is often times quite stressful. This “Affidavit” is sworn to under oath, and therefore the truthfulness and/or the accuracy of the information is important. False or incorrect information can cause complications in the case during litigation. To ensure the accuracy of the information I encourage my clients to come into the office and meet with my staff to complete the affidavit and compile the necessary documentation. Hopefully, this makes the process less intimidating. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. RAISING THE LEVEL OF PROSTATE CANCER CARE: ENHANCED OPERATING ROOM AND ADVANCED TECHNIQUES Each year approximately 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States. It is the most common form of cancer for men in the nation. A patient with prostate cancer may experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, and unfortunately by the time symptoms develop, the disease is often incurable. For this reason, early detection of the disease is critical. Screening for Prostate Cancer involves performing a rectal exam and evaluating the levels of PSA, a protein essential to reproduction. If diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is important to know all the treatment options. Robotic-Assisted Surgery with Enhanced 3D Projection Cleveland Clinic Florida offers the most advanced surgical treatment options for prostate cancer, including robotic surgery. The robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed in Cleveland Clinic’s newly enhanced operating room. This procedure enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. A 3-D camera provides a magnified view from inside the patient while the surgeon controls a set of robotic arms from a nearby console. The robotic arms mimic the movement of the human hands, wrists and fingers providing surgeons an extensive range of motion and a precision that is difficult to reach through traditional surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida urologist Alok Shrivastava, MD, specializes in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. He stresses the benefits of robotic surgery. “Typically, patients undergoing robotic-assisted prostate surgery encounter significantly less blood loss, and they benefit from reduced hospital stays, faster healing, less postoperative pain, and shorter recovery times,” according to Dr. Shrivastava.
Comprehensive Cancer Care Cleveland Clinic Florida is uniquely designed to offer comprehensive and compassionate cancer care, which often involves the cooperation of a variety of specialists, including oncologists, hematologists, radiologists and surgeons. Our experts take a team approach to each patient—lending their combined expertise to diagnose cancer accurately and completely. After diagnosis, a wide range of Alok Shrivastava, MD minimally-invasive treatment options Cleveland Clinic Florida are offered for the full spectrum of Urologist cancers; breast, prostate, lung, digestive system, ovarian, among others—many of which were pioneered by our own physicians and have since become the gold standard in cancer care. Support services are also available to help during a patient or family member’s illness. A variety of support groups are offered, open to anyone facing cancer, giving an opportunity to share experiences and concerns with others. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s accredited Cancer Institute is dedicated to bringing patients the best cancer care available. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, the comprehensive approach to cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery means that patients receive support and guidance from a dedicated team of experts from day one. This approach not only helps patients fight the disease, but also provides comfort and strength along their journey.
To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/prostatecancer
At Cleveland Clinic Florida, the robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy is performed in a newly enhanced operating room which combines state of the art magnified video projection with the 3D robotic surgical system. The operating room is equipped with two large 110 inch stereoscopic displays allowing the surgical team to view the patient with the same precision as the surgeon. With the aid of special polarized glasses, the surgical team gains better clarity, brilliant colors and refined details that allow them to better assist the surgeon who can operate with greater precision. Radiation Therapy Treatment Options Prostate cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, if found and treated in its early stage. Treatment options and prognosis depend on the type and stage of the cancer, as well as the patient’s age and general health. In some cases, radiation therapy may be used to treat prostate cancer. In this instance, the patient may undergo either of two types of radiation treatment, either external beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy. Other Surgical Treatment Options For some prostate cancer patients, surgery is the best treatment option. Cleveland Clinic Florida also offers a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a minimally-invasive procedure in which the surgeon removes the prostate gland by making button-hole incisions. Through these incisions, the surgeon uses a tiny camera and surgical instruments to conduct the operation and remove the prostate.
Cleveland Clinic Florida
The latest treatments and the most experienced physicians mean the best care suited for you. When faced with Prostate Cancer, it’s important to choose the right place for your care. New Loan Modification Program for Homeowners By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. · Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
N
ew federal guidelines have recently taken effect that may
give financially pressed homeowners a fresh opportunity to qualify for a loan modification. “HAMP” stands for the Home Affordable Modification Program, a government initiative to encourage lenders to allow loan modifications with reduced mortgage payments. Here is a summary of the new loan modification benefits: Lower Debt-to-Income Limits – The new guidelines allow borrowers to lower their monthly mortgage payment to as little as 25 percent of their gross monthly income. Previously, borrowers could not qualify for HAMP unless their total mortgage payment was more than 31 percent of their gross monthly income. Broader Debt Guidelines – The new rules also take into account more types of debt in evaluating a borrower’s financial burden, such as such as second mortgages, medical bills, etc. The old guidelines focused solely on what a borrower was paying for their primary mortgage.
Rental Properties Eligible – One of the biggest changes is that the HAMP program is now open to landlords who are struggling to keep up with mortgage payments on rental properties. Properties need not be occupied to qualify, and a single borrower can qualify to obtain loan modifications on up to three properties under the program. Repeat Modifications Allowed – It used to be that you only had one shot at a HAMP loan modification. If you couldn’t keep up with your payments, you could not reapply for a new modification. Under the new guidelines, borrowers who defaulted on a permanent or trial HAMP loan modification can apply for a new one, provided they’ve been out of the program for at least 12 months. Minimum 10 Percent Reduction – Under the new rules, all loan modifications performed under HAMP must reduce a borrower’s monthly mortgage payments by at least 10 percent. Principal Reductions Encouraged - New incentives are being provided to encourage lenders to allow principal reductions on mortgages where borrowers owe more than the home is worth. We have seen principal reductions up to 50 percent of the amount owed, drastic reductions in the annual interest rate, and even waivers of all past due amounts in certain instances. Navigating through the murky waters of the new HAMP program is frustrating. It is even riskier when there is a pending mortgage foreclosure which could result in the loss of your home prior to completing the loan modification. If you would like more detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in our new consumer friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” available for purchase on our website, www.fight4yourhome. com. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation, or visit www. fight4yourhome.com for more information, client success stories and testimonials.

ait disturbances are one of the most com -
mon concerns of parents. Children may begin walking with their feet turned in or out, leaving parents with many questions. The problem may be coming from any level between the foot and hip. Some deformities occur at one level (i.e. foot, leg, knee, or hip), while others are more complex. Some children may “grow out of it”, while others will not. Newborns and infants are born with their legs bowed and the lower leg turned in relative to the upper leg (medial tibial torsion). This represents the fetal position of the lower limbs. With the beginning of walking the lower limbs start to straighten as normal physiologic development takes place.
CAUSES
▸▸ Genetic: Rotational problems often run in families. When parents and siblings have grown out of it, the presenting child usually will as well. ▸▸ In utero position during pregnancy may cause the foot to turn in. ▸▸ Sleeping or sitting postures may not cause the problem, but will delay the resolution of them. ▸▸ Compensating mechanisms for limb deformities. ▸▸ Tight muscles and ligaments at any level. ▸▸ Bone deformities in the hip, femur, knee, tibia, or feet.
EXAMINATION OF THE CHILD
▸▸ Observation of the child at rest, standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Checking hip range of motion with the hip flexed and extended. ▸▸ Checking knee structure and the rotation of the tibia on the femur (lower leg bone relative to upper bone). ▸▸ Checking the position of the ankle and the leg bone to determine bone deformities. ▸▸ Observation of foot posture to check for curvatures and elevation or flattening of the arch. ▸▸ Neurological problems must be ruled out.

▸▸ To effectively treat rotational problems, the level and severity of the deformity must be determined. ▸▸ If sleeping and sitting position perpetuate the deformity, they must be changed. ▸▸ There may be a need for casting the foot, ankle and leg (every two weeks) to put tight ligaments and muscles into a continuous stretch. This may be necessary for anywhere between two and eight weeks. ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve muscle flexibility and to provide gait training to the child. ▸▸ In-shoe custom molded orthotics or gait plates to help encourage normal walking. This is especially beneficial in the flatfooted child or ones who are intoed. ▸▸ Night braces or splinting to encourage and maintain correction. ▸▸ In rare cases, surgery may be necessary if the problems persist and walking becomes difficult or if the child continues to fall or trip. ▸▸ In most cases, continued observation of the child may be all that is necessary.

s the S heriff of B roward County, I made a
commitment to the public that the Broward Sheriff’s Office would make it a priority to keep our kids in school and out of jail. In one of my first staff meetings with my new administration, we discussed the topic of juvenile civil citations. During the discussion, I began looking through youth arrest records and came across a name I recognized. It was one of the players I coached in football. Because his crime was a misdemeanor, he could have been eligible for a diversion program, which would have kept his name out of the courts and off the record. Unfortunately, he had been arrested instead. The focus of the Civil Citation Program is to educate youth about the consequences of their actions while addressing their needs and diverting cases from the criminal court system. While young people make up 30 percent of our population, they are 100 percent of our future. We need to work towards building this future. The direct benefits of the Civil Citation Program extend beyond the youthful offender. The program also saves millions of tax dollars that would otherwise be spent on other juvenile justice system operations. To move an offender through the traditional criminal court system costs about $5,000 and takes about eight months. In contrast, it costs only about $500 and takes 45-60 days to put someone through the Civil Citation Program. The lasting effect of a criminal record has the potential to derail the future of a child. It can affect future employment, military service or scholarship opportunities. In an effort to address this concern, I mandated that all deputies issue a civil citation to any youthful offender who is suspected of committing a first-time misdemeanor offense. In lieu of an arrest, the youth agrees to participate in community service and any necessary intervention services. Any young individual in our community could one day grow to become a great sheriff, lawyer or teacher. However, this success could be hindered by a tarnished criminal record. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is committed to helping these kids get into the right programs and on the right track. Change can already be seen in the numbers. In the first half of 2013, 175 youth have been referred to the Civil Citation Program, which is a monumental comparison to only 68 who were referred in all of 2012. As law enforcement officers, our worth should be measured by how many children we keep out of jail, not how many we arrest. I firmly believe one mistake made in the teenage years should not invalidate or discourage anyone from a successful future. Today’s children are tomorrow’s future, and we must invest in every individual. Diverting first-time offenders through programs to help keep their records clean and teach them responsibility gives them a second chance for a better life. For information about the Broward County Civil Citation Program, visit http://www.broward.org/ HumanServices/CivilCitation.

Kids Toothbrush Club Helps Children Create Good Brushing Habits By Debby Teich
G
Describe the sticker sheet.
etting children to brush their teeth
often presents a challenge. The Kids Toothbrush Club is a monthly subscription club for children that includes a fresh, new toothbrush along with a fun kit designed to provide hours of motivational and educational activities. It uses rewards and positive reinforcement to help children build a lifelong routine of good oral health habits.
The sticker sheet provides 120 star stickers for daily use when brushing. Also included are multiple large stickers for your child to note special occasions and accomplishments. For example, there are stickers for a Happy Birthday, a New Tooth and an A+ day.
Claire Cohen, founder and president, answered some commonly asked questions about the Kids Toothbrush Club.
Why is it important for children to brush regularly? Children should brush regularly and
change their toothbrush monthly to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs and get the best cleaning possible to prevent plaque, tarter and cavities. A healthy smile is the foundation for a healthy body and mind.
How did the Club get started? The Kids Toothbrush Club started out of a mission to help raise funds and dental hygiene awareness for children in lower economic areas. Although these children need many of the basic essentials in life, toothbrushes are often overlooked in their daily necessities. Since we believe that every child deserves a healthy smile, with each Kids Toothbrush Club membership we provide toothbrushes free of charge for children in need. This helps teach all kids the rewards of giving back. Kids helping kids - now that’s something to smile about!
What role do Jake and Judy play? Jake and
Claire helps a child unwrap a new toothbrush.
Toothbrush Club kit, a child creates daily habits with a fun kit that includes motivational charts, stickers and activity books.
Describe your own personal success with a reward system. I (Claire) have been teach-
ing grades three through college level for 33 years. As a mother of two children, I found that the use of positive reinforcement and rewarding good behaviors with my children and students works best to motivate and build good habits. Kids love to be rewarded for good behavior and those behaviors become part of their daily routines. The routines learned as a kid become lifelong healthy habits.
Judy are fun toothbrush characters that chil12-month Kit dren can associate with. We have Jake and Judy playing sports, eating healthy foods, and other activities therefore encouraging good physically fitness in addition to good oral hygiene and overall good health. When children receive their monthly fun kits, they look forward to coloring and reading about Jake and Judy’s adventures.
How do you reach out to kids in need? We visit schools and daycare centers and provide much needed dental supplies and education. For information, visit www.KidsToothbrushClub.com or send an email to Claire@kidstoothbrushclub.com. Or visit the following social media sites: Facebook – www.facebook.com/kidstoothbrushclub; Twitter – www.twitter.com/kids_toothbrush; Pinterest - http:// pinterest.com/kidstoothbrush and YouTube - http://www.youtube. com/KidsToothbrushClub.
What is included in the monthly kit?
Children receive a monthly shipment that includes a fresh, new toothbrush along with a fun coloring activity booklet, plus a calendar and stickers.
Claire shows a child some of the fun activities that are included in a kit.
What ages is the Club for? Kids Toothbrush
Club fun kits are appropriate for children ages 2 and up. They are available in two age ranges appropriate for children ages toddler to four and for ages five and up. Parents can also add an adult toothbrush to the child’s kit each month to receive a fresh, new toothbrush, so that they can be great role models for their children. Shipping is always FREE on each Kids Toothbrush Club fun kit.
Why is the Club effective? Parents and
teachers know the best way to motivate a child is through a reward system. By using the Kids

Describe the monthly activity coloring book. The monthly activity coloring book pro-
vides challenging activities meant for developing critical thinking skills, motor skills, visual awareness, vocabulary skills, and spelling skills all that support healthy oral hygiene. A Jake and Judy toothbrush and their dog Max are featured each month.
How does the themed calendar work? The
themed calendar allows you and your child to monitor their daily brushing. Your child is rewarded with a star sticker to place on the calendar each time he brushes his teeth. The calendar also reinforces counting skills, tracking skills, and develops a sense of accomplishment.
