“Treat” Yourself to Special Family Time This Halloween Finally, we have settled back into our regular routine: rushing the kids to and from school and shuttling them around town to after-school activities. Football season is in full swing and summer vacation is now a distant memory. The temperature is finally starting to cool off a bit. With the heat and humidity dropping, we can get back to enjoying outdoor family activities and gatherings with friends. With the cooler weather comes every kid’s favorite fall holiday – Halloween. It’s time to decorate the house with pumpkins, stock up on candy bars and lollipops, and take your little ones shopping for costumes. Pretty soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized superheroes, princesses, witches and rock stars. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these precious moments, for these are memories that will last a lifetime.

our students , who train at Vantage P oint
Equestrian in Southwest Ranches, recently participated in the annual Camp Fox Lea Plain Brown Paper Wrapper Horse Show in Venice, Florida. Crystal Valentine, Charlotte Rowe, Lucie Rowe and Daniella Santor all left the show as champions. Although the show has an “AA” rating, which is the United States Equestrian Federation’s highest rating, it also has a fun atmosphere. It includes “themes” games, contests, costumes, and parties. Riders can decorate their team’s stable; dress themselves and their horses in elaborate costumes; form teams for “Color War” competitions and scavenger hunts, and much more. The four girls range in age from 7 to 13. Two of the girls, Lucie and Charlotte Rowe, are sisters who live in Missouri and commute several times each year to train. Crystal Valentine commutes several times weekly from Naples, Florida to train. Local student Daniella Santor was unable to compete at the show due to a sprained ankle, but attended in an assistant role to help her teammates with specialized grooming and preparation for their classes. “I couldn’t be more proud of my riders and our ponies,” said Gemini Brittany Pledger, who trains the girls. “These students train hard year-round to mentally and physically prepare themselves and their ponies for horse showing. It isn’t easy, but it’s rewarding when the big payoff happens. Everything came together. We had a very successful show.

Schott Communities to Host 2013 Run, Walk & Roll to Benefit the Disabled By Debby Teich
M
any will never truly know
what it is like to live with a disability. On October 19, the community will have an opportunity to help support those who struggle with one on a daily basis by participating in the Schott Communities’ “2013 Run, Walk & Roll.” The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help continue Schott Communities’ mission – to create an environment of dignity and care where persons with physical and/ or mental challenges are encouraged to grow in self-acceptance and independence. More than 800 people are expected to participate in the timed 5K Run or the 1M Walk & Roll. The event will start on the campus of the Schott Communities, in Cooper City, and wind through Southwest Ranches on a USTAF certified course. It includes children’s activities, raffles, visiting vendor booths, and a complimentary breakfast. This is the fourth year that Dave Shula will co-chair the event with Andrew Almeida, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and defied his doctors’ predictions that he would never walk or speak. “We are so excited to continue to see this
event grow with more sponsors and participants,” said Shula. “Some of these runners are dedicated athletes who take part in similar events throughout South Florida. At this particular event, they have a chance to meet some of the extraordinary individuals who benefit from Schott’s many programs and services. They are glad to support such a worthwhile cause and help to make a difference in their lives.” Schott Communities is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are physically or intellectually challenged. Each month, over 1,000 adults with special needs pass through its doors for help. Some of Scott’s programs and services include: Art from the Heart: An Art Therapy Program, a Daily Adult Day Program, Crafts Classes, Counseling Services, Family Support Groups, Religious Education, and Sacramental Preparation. More than 800 people participated in the 2012 event. Photo: Back row (l to r) Co-chair Dave Shula, Cynthia McCloskey (3rd place winner for the Top Overall Female Runners), and Tim McCloskey (2nd place winner for the Top Masters Male Runners). Top 10 Causes of Hair Loss (Part 3) By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
T
he final part of the Top 10 C auses of Hair Loss
covers the last four main causes of hair loss and continues to give ways to prevent, control and treat them. In the last two parts, we learned how the normal hair growth cycle works and addressed the first six top causes for excessive hair loss: Telogen Effluvium, Hypothyroidism, Lupus, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Chemotherapy/Radiation and Hereditary Hair Loss. If you missed the articles, you can read them in our website at www.bellissimomedical.com. Here are the final four causes: 7. Skin conditions of the scalp - An unhealthy scalp can cause inflammation that makes it difficult for hair to grow. Skin conditions that lead to hair loss include: Seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and fungal infections, such as ringworm. Such conditions can cause the scalp to shed its skin; you may experience hormonal changes, or excessive oil in the skin. A physical exam of the scalp will help determine your condition. What you can do: Use medicated shampoo, traditional medication or light therapy depending on the magnitude of the disease involved. 8. Iron Deficiency Anemia - Women who have heavy periods or do not eat enough iron-rich foods may be prone to iron deficiency, in which the blood does not have enough red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen to the cells located throughout your body, giving you the energy you need. Therefore when your body lacks red blood cells, the symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, headaches, difficulty concentrating, cold hands and feet, and hair loss. Simple, inexpensive blood tests can be taken to diagnose this common condition. Replacement of iron is necessary if tests indicate deficiency. What you can do: Eat iron-rich foods such as beef, pork, fish, leafy greens, fortified cereals, and beans. 9. Alopecia Areata - 4.7 million people in the U.S. alone are affected by this autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. The cause of this disorder is unknown, but some speculate it may be triggered by stress or illness. The symptoms cause round, smooth patches of baldness on the scalp, eyebrows, or legs. Observing the pattern of hair loss can usually determine if you have Alopecia Areata. Blood tests for iron, ANAs, and hormone imbalance can be taken for other possible causes of hair loss. What you can do: It can be treated with steroids injections. Rogaine and Platelet Rich Plasma may also help. 10. Excessive styling - Too much shampooing, styling, and dyeing can harm your hair. Heat, chemicals from keratin, straightening treatments, and hair dye cause the hair to break and fall out. What you can do: Test this by using the pull test. Take a small handful of about 50 strands, pull gently, and check to see whether the hair that comes out has bulbs on the ends. Remove the source of trauma and let the area affected recover. If your hair loss condition hasn’t improved and has been affecting your confidence, it is important to see a functional medicine doctor. The sooner treatment is started, the better the chances are for improving your growing season. A Functional Medicine Doctor takes a whole-patient approach, seeking to ferret out the actual cause of your hair loss, working in partnership with you to outline the best approach. As stated in the previous parts of this series, Bellissimo Medical now offers through the Hair Restoration Institute the latest in hair restoration through a minimally invasive technology called Neograft. This revolutionary method allows for a quicker recovery with natural results and no visible scars. Still have questions about hair loss? We’ll be more than happy to answer them all! Davie PAL Comedy Show to Raise Money for Youth Programs By Debby Teich
T
he Davie P olice Athletic League’ s 2 nd Annual Comedy Night is a chance to laugh a little, while helping a good cause. It will be held on October 24, at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Improv Comedy Club, in Hollywood. All of the ticket proceeds will benefit the Davie Police Athletic League and its programs. “We invite the public to join us for a great night of fun, while helping to keep the kids in our community off the streets,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “The money raised will help us provide low cost or free programs, so everyone can attend. Every kid has the potential to get into trouble and we offer them a safe place to hang out.” The event will feature comedian Deen Napolatano, who is a throwback to the great comedians of yesteryear, but with a modern twist. When he tells stories, he makes the audience feel as if they have been through the experience themselves. He has been seen in a variety of television shows, such as Heroes, The Shield, and What About Brian. The Police Athletic League of Davie Inc. (Davie PAL) is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Over 600 kids of all income levels are enrolled in basketball, tutoring, boxing, mentoring and a variety of other programs and activities. The PAL basketball league, for ages 7 to 15, offers play-

ers an opportunity to learn a variety of basketball skills, including ball handling, dribbling, passing and more. PAL also offers a high school basketball league, as well as a travel league for players, 7 to 17. Students, in 3rd to 8th grades, can also sign up for after school tutoring. Children spend the first hour having play time and snack. After, certified teachers and volunteers help them with homework, answer questions, and prepare them for the FCAT. They visit the computer lab to work on reading and math skills and spend time in the garden. There is free bus service for children from Davie Elementary School. PAL is always looking for adults or students interested in tutoring. Boxing is also popular. Beginners, age 7 to 20, can get in shape as they learn self-defense, discipline and team work. More advanced students can join the boxing team, which gives them an opportunity to compete in national events and box with state and regional champions. Davie PAL also offers a Youth Leadership program for teens. The kids run the program and select a board and council. They participate in service projects in the community and much more. Davie PAL is located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace, in Davie. Comedy Night tickets range in price $30-$50 dollars for two people, with a two drink minimum. Davie Teen Completes Eagle Scout Project By Debby Teich
M
ichael Lockwood, 17, is on his
way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. If everything goes as planned, he will soon become Troop 128’s next Eagle Scout. He joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was in first grade and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.
Michael decided on his project six years ago. During a visit to Math Igler Citrus Park in Davie, he met a woman who told him that she wished there was a swing set at the park for her handicapped grandson. He thought it was a great idea and made a mental note to build one for his Eagle Scout project. Earlier this year, it was finally time to begin his project. He spent two months creating an Eagle book. It contained a detailed explanation of his plans, which included a swing set, as well as two citrus trees and two park benches. He presented it to his Scoutmaster and then to the District board. Once it was approved, the next challenge was to raise $3,200 for the project. He reached out to family, friends and neighbors. He also made presentations to the Rotary Club, Soroptimist International and the
26
Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. “When I explained how the project would benefit the youth in the community, people were very supportive and willing to donate,” said Michael. In August, more than 30 volunteers met at the park to begin the installations. The team included members of Michael’s Boy Scout troop and Archbishop McCarthy’s wrestling team, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Councilmember Susan Starkey, and many others. They planted the trees, which were donated by Bob Roth’s New River Grove Park, and refurbished the benches, which were donated by the Town of Davie. They also began the day long process of building the swing set, which included digging holes, assembling the pieces, adding support beams, pouring concrete and more. “The process was fast, smooth, and organized,” said Michael. “I am grateful to everyone who came out to help.” Once the concrete was dry, a small crew returned to add the swings, including a special one for handicapped children. “As soon as the swings were ready, there was a long line of kids waiting to use them,” said Michael. “It was a great addition to the park.” Michael still has a few steps left before he earns his badge. He needs to present the project to his Scout Master and then to the Scout Board. Michael is currently a senior at Archbishop McCarthy. He hopes to attend North Georgia University, where he will study business and participate in the ROTC program. After he graduates, he plans to serve our country as an Officer in the Army and return to scouting as an Assistant Scout Master. “Scouting has had such a large impact on my life and I want to give back to the program to help it grow,” said Michael. “I encourage other youth to join scouting to experience all it has to offer.”

Soroptimist International of Davie Celebrates 30 Years of Service By Debby Teich
M
embers of Soroptimist I nternational of Davie
recently gathered at the Grand Oakes Golf Club in Davie. They were joined by friends, family, former members, and past presidents to celebrate the club’s 30 years of service. Davie Mayor Judy Paul, herself a former Soroptimist, also performed the annual installation of officers. The following officers were installed: Kathy Blanton (President), Tammy Brandys (Vice President), Angie Krumennacker (Treasurer), Lorinda Craig (Assistant Treasurer), Lyne Lemire (Corresponding Secretary), Barbara Reitzma (Recording Secretary), Marie Ambrosino (Director), Sandi Katulka (Director), and Helen Ditter (Director). Past club presidents - Suellen Fardelmann, Barbara McCall, Joan Kovac, Mary Ann Taylor - were presented with a special Soroptimist pin recognizing their roles as founding members of the club. Soroptimist is an international volunteer-service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The Davie chapter was founded in 1983. Approximately 25 members meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month, at noon, at Vienna Café in Davie. They participate in community service projects, as well as social events. The club always welcomes new members. The Davie chapter began with a project to save Old Davie School from demolition and restore it as a museum of local history and a community center for Davie and area residents. Today, it supports a variety of programs and community organizations within Davie and Broward County. It also supports the global outreach of Soroptimist International of the Americas around the world. Some of the charities the club supports include: Project Stable, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, EASE Foundation, Stop Human Trafficking, HOPE Outreach Center, PACE Center for Girls Broward, Project Sierra, Wounded Warriors and more. The club has also served as a Partner in Education with Davie Elementary School for more than ten years. Each year, the club also gives a Violet Richardson Award to a young girl, between the ages 14 – 17, for outstanding community service. The club also gives an annual Women’s Opportunity Award to a woman seeking educational/vocational skills to re-enter the work place. Recipients are usually single mothers seeking to become economically independent. For information, visit www.sidavie.org.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the middle. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

It is the second consecutive year that the US Suns have participated. “The players were extremely humbled and enthusiastic about the opportunity to represent their school, friends, and family members live on ESPN,” said Roger Harriott, Head Football Coach. “This has proven to be a memorable experience that’s certain to last them a life time.” Harriott says that there were several players who stood out during the game. “Senior wide receiver Chris Taylor was the player of the game, hauling in three touchdowns off of seven catches and 72 yards. Senior quarterback Sean White tossed three touchdowns (150 yards). Junior running back Jordan Scarlett rushed for 104 yards and posted a touchdown, while senior running back LaJuan Hunt added 39 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Defensively, senior cornerback Quincy Wilson had a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown; senior defensive end Richard Yeargin made three sacks and a blocked punt; junior defensive tackle Brandon Boyce added a sack; and senior linebacker Andrew Korakakos
made an interception.” In 2012, the US Suns were undefeated District champions, Regional champions and Class 3A State champions. Harriott says that authentic senior leadership, as well as team camaraderie and chemistry, helped the team win its first state championship. “Our motto, ‘Family, Tradition, & Excellence’ came to fruition last season, as the entire team (coaches, teachers, and parents included) committed to the global mission—which was to be exemplary role models and productive citizens on and off the field.” Harriott is determined to push his team even further this year. “The objective for this season is to win another state championship,” said Harriott. “The ultimate goal is to exceed expectations by procuring a national championship. We were fortunate to assemble a game schedule that has attracted substantial attention based on its competitive strength. Various media sources have declared it the toughest schedule in the country. Therefore, the national championship is an achievable opportunity.” Many of the players have already made commitments, including: Quincy Wilson (University of Florida), Sean White (Auburn University), Richard Yeargin (University of Notre Dame), LaJuan Hunt (Air Force Academy), Brandon Russell (Rutgers University), Ephraim Levy (Bryant University), Emmanuel Soto (Air Force Academy), Chris Taylor (Duke University), and Andrew Dirocco (Tulane Unviersity).

AMHS Dedicates New 21st Century Classroom By Debby Teich
I
n an effort to reduce class sizes in Math and E nglish , Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches recently built a new 8,000 square foot 21st Century Classroom above the existing locker room. It is all part of a school wide effort to ensure that students are well prepared for colleges and universities. “In four short years, our campus has gone from quality Catholic education with spotty internet service to an Apple Distinguished School,” said Principal Richard Jean. “Our students will now also have the advantage of learning in our 21st Century Classroom, which will help them become effective global citizens of tomorrow and agents of positive change.” Over 200 people attended the dedication, blessing and ribbon cutting for the classroom. The dedication mass and blessing were presided over by Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski. To his surprise, he was the namesake of the classroom: Archbishop Thomas Wenski iCatholicEd . The McCarthy flexible learning space has a capacity for 200 students. It was specifi-
cally designed with foldable glass walls. In a matter of minutes, it can be transformed from four classrooms into one. The space is equipped with leading active learning solutions, which promote mobility and flexibility, as well as seamless integration with technology. Mike Ambrosino, Regional Education Leader, Florida & Caribbean for Steelcase Education Solutions, which worked on the project, said “This innovative space created by McCarthy is a reflection of their ambition to deliver absolute student success in an environment that facilitates new types of learning, new types of learners, and above all transition and change.” Goals for future growth include remodeling the locker rooms, adding a pool and tennis courts, and construction of a parking garage. Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School is located at 5451 South Flamingo Road, in Southwest Ranches. For information, visit www.mccarthyhigh.org or call 954-434-8820. Principal Richard Jean and Archbishop Wenski prepare to cut the ribbon on the 21st Century Classroom.

rapery for your home is the final touch to
complete your décor. It is normally the last aspect on interior design that homeowners consider. Daily, I design for clients who have lived for seven years without a single window covering. The fabric is like art on your windows. Adds texture to the room. Completes the décor by bringing the wall color, furniture and floor together. Enhances the ambiance by adding fabric, which insulates, plus adds dramatic appeal. ▸▸ Complements blinds that have a more straight line look. Can Edit Headline Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? By Dr. Maria Grosman
O
ver the last five decades , fluoride has been
added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae!! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. y previous articles have addressed the
challenges of buyers who may be affected by the recent mortgage rate hikes. In spite of what has been written in the newspapers and blogs, along with what has been reported on the local and national news, buyers are still waiting to see if interest rates will come back down or prices will drop. Though no one can guarantee where rates will be in a few months, waiting is not a good strategy. Even though interest rates are still historically low, most experts believe that rates may actually move higher. The Mortgage Bankers Association, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the National Association of Realtors are in unison projecting that rates will continue to climb. With home prices increasing and interest rates projected to also increase, the cost of buying a house could quickly increase rather dramatically.

Not surprisingly, a recent study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University revealed: “Even after the dramatic loss of equity and the high foreclosure rates, the early evidence suggests that people seem to believe that, over the long run, owning is still preferable to renting…The long term cultural preference for owning seems to have weathered the recent housing crisis.” The study went on to state: “Moreover, the finding that younger renters and owners are more likely than their older counterparts to expect to own bodes well for the future of the housing market.” Based on the fact that most people are still chasing the American Dream of homeownership, it baffles me that buyers continue to wait or renters continue to rent. Understanding that circumstances may drive you to rent, I would strongly urge you to check with your mortgage broker or bank to see whether or not you could qualify to go ahead and make that purchase. I can put you on auto-notification which will alert you as to any and all active homes in your area and price range as soon as those properties hit the MLS system. I still have friends who are thinking about remodeling versus purchasing a larger home. I have tools that will help you decide whether or not that is the right direction for you and your family to take. The market is shifting. As mortgage rates continue to rise, buying power will be affected, which may cause a slight slow-down in our marketplace. Therefore, this would be the best opportunity for you to take a look at your current housing situation to see whether or not it is time for you to make a move. Please allow me to be your resource. I will exercise objectivity to help you make the best decision for your current situation. There have been times where I have encouraged people to move or encouraged them to hold on. I am more interested in developing and maintaining a lifelong relationship with my clients. Lately, I have been showing property to the grown children of my life-long clients. This has been fulfilling, rewarding and a real testimony of my dedication to my clients – long term. I look forward to serving you, your friends, family and co-workers. his year , a strange event will take place . The
first day of Hanukkah is Thursday, November 28th. If this date sounds a bit familiar, it is because it is also Thanksgiving. So for those who celebrate these two holidays, it will be a double celebration. Turkey and latkes anyone? Now as a family law attorney, my thoughts went in a different direction when I became aware of this rare occurrence. I am sure that there are several divorced couples who have a time sharing schedule in place which grants one parent time with the children on Thanksgiving and the other parent time on Hanukkah. Now when family law attorneys draft an Agreement, they try and anticipate every possible situation, so that future litigation can be avoided. I can, however, assure you that this would not have been a situation which would have been anticipated. You may be wondering, “How do they resolve this obvious conflict in scheduling?” I don’t know that I have an absolute answer to this situation. Sound logic would suggest that since Hanukkah is eight days and Thanksgiving is only one, the one day holiday should take precedence. Unfortunately, sound logic does not always prevail. The hope is that two mature parents can resolve it between themselves and avoid any unnecessary conflict. Of course, that is also not always the case. Today, when couples who have minor children divorce, they enter into a Parenting Plan. This document clearly spells out the time sharing arrangement as well as the responsibilities of both parents. Holidays are generally equally divided based upon odd or even years. As an example, Mom may have Thanksgiving in even years and Dad in odd numbered years. The same division applies for most of the major holidays. Winter break, which includes Christmas and New Years, generally gets divided in half, with Christmas Day being the day of exchange. This allows both parents time with the children, either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Of course, some parents would rather have Christmas Eve every year and if the other parent does not object, it usually can be worked out. This, however, does prevent a parent from travelling out of town for the Christmas vacation and therefore some parents would rather alternate from year to year. This schedule is included in the Parenting Plan. If no changes are made by agreement, it will be the schedule to be followed, until there are no more minor children A judge recently told a client of mine that the Parenting Plan should just be a guide and should not be without some flexibility. Parents, who can assist each other along the way, will have happier and healthier children. Hopefully those Parents who look at their schedule this year and have the Hanukkah/ Thanksgiving conflict will realize that fighting over this once in a lifetime event is not worth the time, the money and the aggravation. Breast Cancer Care at Its Best One in eight women will get breast cancer. The good news is that the death rate from breast cancer has dropped about 2 percent per year since 1990, thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease. Our unique approach to breast cancer is born out of the belief that women should play an active role in their healthcare by asking questions, discussing treatment alternatives and working with their healthcare team to determine their best options. Breast Cancer Epidemiology A gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, highrisk women can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. However, genetic testing is done only when definitely indicated by a personal or a strong family history. Genetic testing might also be used to determine if a woman who has already been diagnosed with breast cancer is at an increased risk for a breast cancer reoccurrence or ovarian cancer. Breast Cancer Treatment Options Recognized for its state-of-the-art treatment capabilities, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center has earned a three-year/full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) by the American College of Surgeons. A range of treatment options is available to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials, to name a few. Don’t Try a Do-It-Yourself Foreclosure Defense By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. · Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
W
e have counseled hundreds of clients through the years ,
and the most significant mistake that homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is to wait until the last minute to contact a knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding and save their home. Here are several important reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense. Florida’s new speedy foreclosure law (House Bill 87) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under the new Florida law, the burden has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners will have about 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had months or years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, constantly changing, and require specialized knowledge. Homeowners are not equipped to tackle the challenges presented by Florida’s speedy foreclosure law without the guidance of an attorney. Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from April 2012 to March 2013 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of foreclosure cases. The district courts are doing everything in their power to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system, implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of foreclosure cases daily, is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are simply not legally ready for trial, or not “at issue.” Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, with an auction sale date 30-60 days later. Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, every bank statement, every payment, every communication you’ve had with the bank, and contact experienced attorneys like those at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you will be able to know what lies ahead, so you can work with your attorney and ensure that you are defended quickly and properly. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent many homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.fight4yourhome.com to schedule your appointment online.

Growing Pains in Children or Merely “Flat Feet”? By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing
child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly felt during activity. It is also felt at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be felt. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Children that are sedentary, may become overweight.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight lessen or eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast may be necessary to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. We have seen and treated more than a thousand of these children with this problem with excellent long-term success. What Do Cadillacs and Cataract Laser Surgery Have in Common? By Inna Ozerov, MD
”I
am here for a ‘cadillac ’ consulta-
tion,” said Mrs. Jones. “My friend had it done and now she drives without glasses!” I smiled and, being an ophthalmologist, I knew exactly what Mrs. Jones was referring to – CATARACTS! “Alright, let’s talk about those ‘cadillacs’ of yours,” I said.
What Is A Cataract?
The eye houses a natural crystalline lens that functions as a lens inside a camera. It focuses light on the back part of the eye, called the retina. Due to age, medications, and diseases, the natural lens starts to lose its clarity. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract, and the vision starts to become blurry. The only way to permanently treat this situation is with cataract extraction. During cataract surgery, a small, self-sealing incision is created on the surface of the eye with a blade. Next, a high-energy ultrasonic probe is used to soften and break up the cataract into smaller pieces, which are then suctioned out of the eye. This step is called phacoemulsification. A foldable, artificial intraocular lens is then carefully placed in the eye through the same incision and allowed to unfold inside the eye. The incision is sealed without the need for sutures.

surgery to the next level by increasing the accuracy of the procedure for patients desiring an enhanced refractive outcome, while reducing treatment time. The LenSx Laser offers a more precise way of mapping the eye, providing the surgeon with the images and data needed to plan and perform surgery. Each incision will be customized for your eye and programmed into the LenSx Laser. This level of precision is unattainable through traditional surgical methods. In addition to accurate mapping of the eye, many of the most challenging aspects of traditional cataract surgery are performed with the LenSx Laser, rather than by hand. For example, the femtosecond laser eliminates some of the need for handheld surgical blades and the amount of time an ultrasonic probe is used to break up the patient’s cataract prior to its removal. This allows for more precision and faster healing time. The use of the laser also allows a more accurate centration of the artificial intraocular lens, which is critical for the best visual outcome. When you choose the LenSx laser approach, you will enjoy the benefits of: ▸▸ A bladeless, advanced procedure ▸▸ A comfortable, relaxed setting ▸▸ A truly premium surgical experience When a cataract is removed, in its place, an intraocular lens implant (IOL) is surgically inserted into the eye to improve vision. In the next issue, we will discuss the different types of IOL implants that are available. Stay tuned! Dr. Inna Ozerov works at the Miami Eye Institute, located at 7261 Sheridan Street, Suite 100B, in Hollywood. For information, call 954-251-1802 or visit www.miamieyesurgeon.com.

public safety and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Broward County. For the most part, people interact with law enforcement when they are in need of immediate help. While emergency response is an important part of the job, community involvement, partnerships and collaboration efforts are important as well. Broward County is diverse - with people from many races, religions and cultures - and all those voices deserve to be heard. One of the main focuses of my administration is building a stronger partnership with all of our communities, and I feel this can only be accomplished by recognizing, valuing and respecting our differences and shared concerns. With that in mind, I have assembled a Community Outreach team to help bridge the gap between our enforcement perspective to public safety and the needs of the community. I know Broward County residents have concerns and suggestions to help improve the quality of their neighborhoods, and I want to hear them.
The Community Outreach team is a crucial part of the two-way street of communication that can enhance public safety. The unit is comprised of sworn law enforcement deputies and civilians who are diverse in backgrounds and skills and provide valuable crime prevention information to our residents in their native language. Serving as a liaison between the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the community, one of their main goals is to acquire valuable feedback and suggestions that can strengthen our relationships with the community and enhance the public’s trust in law enforcement. Utilizing a proactive approach, this group is connecting with residents one-on-one by providing the attention deputies sometimes cannot offer because they are responding to their next call. Every day, members of the team attend various events, from homeowners’ association meetings to annual celebrations, to discuss important educational and crime prevention information offered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. They also provide information about free services and community involvement opportunities available to all Broward County residents, such as the Citizens Academy, child car seat inspections, the vacation home watch program, Operation Medicine Cabinet and Shred-A-Thon programs. Public safety requires involvement from the community, and the efforts of the Community Outreach team are ensuring that we are keeping the lines of communication open. Public awareness of BSO’s initiatives can help build a foundation of trust and support; likewise, BSO’s awareness of community concerns will help strengthen relationships and build a culture of positive growth. I want every member of our community to know that they have my attention, my ear and my respect. For more information about the Department of Community Outreach or services offered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, visit www.sheriff.org. To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter @browardsheriff.
