Happy Holidays

M

any of our readers come from diverse cul-

tural backgrounds and religious beliefs. But, for all of us, the holiday season is a time to reflect on the passing of another year. In our busy lives, take a moment to think back and learn from the little, and the big, things that went less then perfect over the last year. Did I make enough time for the kids to give them encouragement and support? Did I balance my family time with hobbies and work? Did I treat my family, friends, neighbors and coworkers with the respect they deserve? Did I leave any issues unresolved, any minor disagreements to mend? The holiday season is also the time to lend a hand to those less fortunate than ourselves. We need to teach our children to share our good fortune not only with our loved ones, but with those in need as well. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. This holiday season, give your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime: the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others, for that is truly what the holidays are about. Wishing everyone a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy new year! Sincerely,

to sponsor the event. This is the first year that the Town of Southwest Ranches will be the sole sponsor. Although it is still a small local event, Town organizers are hoping that it will continue to grow in size. “The Equestrian Park was designed for this type of event,” said Lauretano-Haines. “It is the kind of event that helps us preserve our rural lifestyle.” Check in/registration is at 8am and classes begin at 9am. The event will include a variety of classes, such as fun events (best costume for rider and/or horse), speed events (barrel racing, pole bending), Western (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), English (showmanship, pleasure, equitation), Hunter (showmanship, under saddle, equitation) and more. All of the classes are limited to 15 entries. Trophies and awards will be given for winners in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. “We look forward to a wonderful show and invite everyone from the surrounding communities to come out and enjoy it with us,” said Lauretano-Haines. TAG USA Gymnastics What makes your gymnastics and trampoline classes at TAG USA different? Michael: I can list that.....Our large gym allows for more training space and more equipment, classes don’t share equipment or wait in line to train, parents have front row seats to watch every moment of their children, we use lesson plans for every class, TAG has two managers monitoring every class in the gym, our coaches are background checked and trained, when our athletes reach team level, we win, and that proves that our programs work from a 3 year old beginner to advanced classes.

Tell us about TAG USA’s championships and how they have competed against other local gyms:

Q&A with Michael & Marissa Zoldan Marissa: TAG USA has a National Champion in DM Trampoline and three top five national medalists on trampoline. For Level 3 and 4 compulsory girls teams have won back to back team Florida State championships. This past season we again had State and Regional Champs on our Girls and Boys gymnastic team, Regional Champs on our prep-Optional and our first Boys Team National Qualifier.

How is TAG USA Gymnastics now becoming nationally known. Marissa: Having a National Champion and winning back to back State Championships in girls gymnastics has made us nationally known. Olympian Aly Raisman visited TAG USA to help us celebrate our championships. Winning against other local gyms also shows that we have become the best gymnastics program in this area. Michael: Once you walk into this facility, parents and gymnasts realize that this is a serious gym for serious gymnasts. Our programs, coaches and equipment offer a young gymnast a chance to succeed within their abilities. Our classes built a child’s self esteem, and if they desire to compete, we help them win championships.

Five Tips on Slowing the Aging Process By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

Y

es , it is a fact that we are all aging . B ut, have

you ever wondered why someone your age looks much younger or older than you? Or are you that person that feels you are rapidly aging? The truth is that we have the ability to alter the process at which we age. Listed below are five helpful tips on how we can slow down this process to become healthier, youthful, attractive and more energetic.

Hormonal Balance

Estrogen - Estrogen has been known as the “Fountain of Youth” for women for years. Estrogen preserves the youthful appearance of skin by maintaining skin thickness and collagen. Decreased collagen levels increase the depth and appearance of wrinkles. ▸▸ 30% of collagen is lost within two years post menopause if Estrogen replacement is not given. ▸▸ Estrogen therapy increases skin collagen up to 48% more versus when people are not on Bio-Identical Estrogen replacement. Testosterone - Low Testosterone is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Both men and women need Testosterone. These levels start to decline for most as early as in our 30’s. Restoring Testosterone to youthful levels with BioIdentical Hormones offers a wealth of benefits: ▸▸ Improves glucose control ▸▸ Decreases abdominal fat / improves body composition ▸▸ Builds bone ▸▸ Improves libido and erectile function ▸▸ Improves memory ▸▸ Decreases stiffness and pain in muscles and joints ▸▸ Improves energy

Exercise

Although exercise per se has not been shown directly to increase longevity, the research has shown that regular exercise decreases the incidence of developing age-related diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cataracts, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. Regular exercise assists in preserving both mental and physical functioning to assist us in healthy aging.

Vitamins/ Diet

Optimization in vitamins, whether through supplements or food, is crucial in cellular function and optimization of the body. It is the foundation to create energy and sleep/wake cycles, as well as to assist in bone health, mental functioning and essentially every process in the body. Without optimized nutrients, your body may accelerate the aging process.

Stress

Chronic stress has been shown to have numerous negative health impacts, from insomnia, Alzheimer’s disease to increase risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Stress also can cause premature wrinkling, known as “worry lines.” Learning to cultivate a less stressful lifestyle and giving the body proper nutrients to address the deficiencies that are required for our stress hormones can impact greatly the aging process.

Dermal Fillers and Botox

Botox - As we age, especially those of us who have chronic stress in our lives tend to have premature wrinkles. Botox may be the way to relax those worry lines. When relaxing these wrinkles, the face appears more youthful and rested. Dermal Fillers - The loss of collagen from aging make us loose volume in our face, which in turn create sagging and deep folds in our face. By simply correcting volume loss through the use of Dermal Fillers (such as Radiesse or Juvederm), we can drop off up to 10 years. The effect of Dermal fillers is a more taut, lifted, and a youthful face without undergoing surgery. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Cooper City’s Allstate Is a One-Stop-Shop for All of Your Insurance Needs By Debby Teich

W

hen buying insurance , you need just the right mix of price and protection. Lisa Faina’s award-winning Allstate Insurance Agency in Cooper City is a one-stopshop for all of your insurance needs. The agency recognizes that their client’s needs are always growing and changing. They help families become better protected from life’s uncertainties and better prepared for the future. With just one phone call, they can help clients protect all of their valuables.

ber of a variety of civic organizations including: Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Life Underwriters, Professional Insurance Agents, Society of Certified Insurance Counselors, National Association of Insurance Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, and more. I am also an Ambassador for the Allstate Giving Campaign.

How do you help in the effort to prevent texting while driving? We care about our cli-

ents and do whatever we can to help keep them safe. Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions facing today’s teens. It increases their risk of crashing by 23 times. On October 1, 2013, a new law went into effect that makes it illegal to text and drive. I encourage all students to take the “X the TXT” pledge, which is part of an Allstate campaign to end texting while driving and encourage people across the country to focus on the road. More than 80,000 people have already taken the pledge.

How long has your agency been in business? We have been serving clients for more than 23 years.

What is the secret to your success? We

have stayed in business for so long by building long term relationships with clients and providing outstanding customer service. We get to know our clients, so we can understand the best way to help them and their families to be better protected from life’s uncertainties and become better prepared for the future.

Who are your clients? We have products for both consumers and businesses.

How do most of your clients find out about your agency? Most new clients are referred to the agency by existing ones.

What insurance products do you offer? We

offer a variety of competitively priced insurance products, including: Auto, Motorcycle, Homeowners, Condominium, Renters, Business Auto, Business Liability, Boat, Flood, RV, Personal Umbrella Policy, and more.

What type of financial services do you provide? We offer the whole spectrum of Financial

Services, such as Annuities, IRA’s, 401K Rollovers, and Mutual Funds. We also offer various Life Insurance products to fit your needs, such as Term Life, Universal Life, Whole Life and Variable Life.

Why is it important to have life insurance?

It is important to have life insurance in order to protect your loved ones. At a devastating time of loss, you need protection for ongoing daily expenses, as well as for paying off larger debts, such as a mortgage, college and other large expense items. An Income Replacement Plan can help alleviate some of the worry of paying your bills during a difficult time.

How do you help your clients select the product that fits their needs? All of the

agency’s fully licensed representatives are trusted insurance advisors. We are trained to help clients make informed decisions about their protection needs, so that they are better protected for current and future needs, as well as unforeseen events. We also help them prepare

22

the right strategy to achieve their financial goals. To help determine some of these things, we do an extensive Needs Analysis at no charge.

How do you help clients as their needs change? We recognize that our client’s needs

are always growing and changing. We help guide them, whether they are starting a family, saving for their children’s education, changing jobs, planning for retirement or expanding a business. We help protect the things that are important to them.

How often do you review your client’s policies? We recommend a policy review a

minimum of every six months to determine if additional discounts are available or to make changes if life changing events have occurred.

Are you collecting donations for Women In Distress? Yes. Women In Distress is the only

nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. It is dedicated to stopping domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education and advocacy. Through December 20, we will be collecting new or gently-used donations for families dealing with domestic violence to provide them with both comfort and the every day essentials they need to build their new violence-free lives. Donations can be dropped off at our office. The Allstate Insurance Agency is located at 2643 N. Hiatus Rd., in the Embassy Lakes Shopping Center. For insurance advice or information, call 954-437-9220 or 800-963-9220, send an email to lisafaina@allstate.com, visit www.allstateagencies.com/LisaFaina, became a fan of Lisa Faina Allstate Agency on Facebook, or contact Lisa on Linkedin.

How do you help clients with retirement planning? We offer retirement seminars for clients who have retired and are about to retire to help guide them through the process. We help them choose the right plan, depending on how they want to live their retirement years.

How do you help clients who are moving or changing jobs? Most clients who have moved

and/or changed jobs need guidance on rolling over their 401k and reviewing their benefits options. We also assist clients with their homeowners insurance, mortgage protection insurance, and any other insurance needs.

How do you give back to the community?

It is very important to me to give back to the community that supports me. I am a volunteer for Women In Distress, a Boy Scouts of America leader for my two sons, as well as a 4th Degree Tae Kwon Do Master Instructor. I am also a mem-

Neighbors to Celebrate the Winter Solstice in the Saddle By Debby Teich

A

s the sun sets during the

winter solstice on December 20, a group of neighbors from Southwest Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of winter with friends, as they experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture. “Come join us to chat with neighbors, as well as old and new friends,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “Enjoy the late afternoon and watch the sun set over Richard Medlock’s beautiful Equestrian Oasis public art feature.” The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis, which is located in the park. The public art feature reflects both form and function. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer

and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would. Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 5pm, leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets. Organizers will serve light refreshments. Holly Ryebrook recently moved to Southwest Ranches and is excited to celebrate her first Solstice in her new hometown. “I have heard so much about this event,” said Holly. “I am looking forward to meeting some of my neighbors and experiencing the beautiful sunset.” Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 Volunteer Rd., just north of Stirling Rd. in Sunshine Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of Southwest Ranches residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. There is no charge for the event. The entire community is welcome. For more information, visit swranches. org or call 954-343-7452.

eam sports can present many challenges for kids with autism .

During the 1st Annual Tee It Up Golf Challenge, sponsored by the Autism Society of Broward County, 25 young adults and children on the autism spectrum had the opportunity to play golf in a safe and secure environment. The event was held at Cooper Colony Country Club in Cooper City. Unlike most golf tournaments, there was no fee to participate, no money raised, and no experience required. It was simply a chance for the kids to play golf and have fun interacting with their peers, while their parents watched with pride. Golfers could either play on the course or participate in the Drive and Putt Skills Challenge. Players on the course were paired up with volunteer caddies from a variety of local high schools. The volunteers rolled the golfers' bags to each hole. After the golfers finished, they received a free 4X6 framed photo of themselves from the event. They also enjoyed pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and more, as they socialized with the other players. Hugh Keough, President of the Autism Society of Broward County, presented each participant with a well-deserved trophy, medal,

Caddy Cole Bianco (l) with participant Bey Hooi (r).

and souvenir cup from Menchies in Davie. “We want to thank all of our volunteers, student caddies/coaches from area high schools, our participants, and their family members for making it such a success,” said Keough. “We are already looking forward to next year’s Tee It Up Challenge!” Seventeen-year-old Jared Barclay came up with the idea for the tournament, while volunteering for Golfing Fore Autism. During the Friday night program at Cooper Colony Country Club, middle and high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders buddy-up with student coaches to learn to play golf. Barclay organized the event with Keough. “The tournament ran very smoothly and all the kids seemed like they had a great time,” said Barclay. “It was really nice to be out there having fun with the kids. I find it to be very rewarding when I can actually see the impact that I am making.” For information on Golfing Fore Autism, visit www.asabroward.org.

They currently include: baseball, girls softball, basketball, tackle football, flag football, cheerleading and soccer, with future programs planned for volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee and 18-hole disc golf. All of the coaches are volunteers, who must pass an FDLE background check by the Town of Davie.

Approximately 500 boys and girls, ages 3 to 15, participate in the baseball program. It includes the following divisions: Smart Start (3-4 year olds), T-Ball (5-6 year olds), Coach Pitch (6-7 year olds), Atom (8-9 year olds), Minor League (10, 11 & 12 year olds) and Major League (13, 14 & 15 year olds). Six year olds can play either Tee Ball or Coach Pitch based on their experience. Parent meetings and player ratings will be held in February. The girls softball program is open to all participants, ages 7 through 14. Approximately 75 girls typically participate, but organizers are hoping to grow the program this year. There are two age divisions: 10 & Under (ages 7-10) and 14 & Under (ages 11-14). Player ratings will be held on February 11, 2014. Davie Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex is located at 3801 S Pine Island Road. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov or call 954-327-3929.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. All About Style By Faryal Ali

T

he holiday season calls for style . You are entertaining and this is a perfect time to dress your windows in new window coverings. At the furniture show, I was amazed to see how much gold has come back. Gold is in the lighting, furniture, trim and accessories. Look for Eastern accents in decorative side tables and wall art. The big color for 2014 is Pantone Turkish Blue. For an easy fix up, consider the following: sheers, side panels, decorative hardware & tiebacks, Hunter Douglas Blinds, and bedding. Sheers – Add sheers to windows to create a soft, billowy feel. Sheers minimize the glare, while softening the edges and adding a light feel to the room. Check out our lustrous sheers with fabulous textures and designs. Sheers that are super full look so luxurious without adding bulk to the room. Need more privacy? Add Hunter Douglas remote controlled honeycomb blinds for room darkening and added privacy. Side Panels – Add drapery side panels to your existing blinds. Blinds emphasize the boxed look of the window space. If you want more elegance in the room, nothing exudes luxury like fabric does. Add a pair of side panels on a decorative pole or stunning medallions. Panels do two things. They eliminate light gaps

on the sides of the shades. They also introduce texture and color in the design scheme. Update Hardware – The right hardware selected for finish and interesting elements can be a big hit. We have decorative poles that can be curved for bay windows, motorized drapery tracks, decorative poles for sheers and stationary panels, outdoor drapery poles, and more. Add decorative tiebacks to make an old drapery panel look new. Bedding – Dress your bed in style. Nothing refreshes a bedroom like new bedding. Quality bedding has a totally different look and feel from store bought. Donate your old headboards and get a large custom headboard. Add drama with tufting, nail head trim, diamond pattern. The choices are exciting. We have over 200 different patterns for you to choose from, with guaranteed delivery for the Holidays. Make it special…make it different. Beautiful Windows can change any room from ordinary to extra ordinary. Budget – Visit our showroom to view the myriad of options available to you. You will find that Custom is Affordable. Faryal Ali has been designing custom window covering for over 23 years. She specializes in residential, commercial and yachts. Beautiful Windows is located at 10220 State Road 84, in Davie. arly dental visits promote the establishment of a

dental home for the pediatric patient and help to familiarize the child with the dental staff and office. At such visits, the dentist and staff help to educate the parents regarding good oral hygiene habits and dietary counseling that together will promote optimal oral health. Parents can have a chance to ask the dentist questions about their child›s dentition, sequence of eruption, cavity prevention, age appropriate oral hygiene and dental products, and any further concerns that they may have. Early visits play a big role in good oral hygiene and promoting a healthy and happy attitude towards a child›s dental visits. It is very important to make the first visit as positive and enjoyable for the child as possible. Pediatric dentists want your child to enjoy getting to know their office and staff and to be comfortable at all times. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put the child at ease during future dental visits. It is important to let your child know that the dentist and staff will explain everything in detail and will answer any questions he/she has. Children should be encouraged to discuss any fears, anxiety, or questions they may have. Parents should not make a big deal about the visit and refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle” or “drill.” Pediatric dentists are experienced in dealing with children with anxiety and can explain treatment procedures in a positive and pleasant manner to avoid any anxious or negative feelings toward dentistry. At your child›s dental visit, we record his/her dental and medical history, complete a comprehensive examination and discuss any findings with you. We will also review the importance of maintaining a good dental health program with you and your child to ensure a healthy and beautiful smile for life!

Why Is Good Dental Health Important?

Innumerable studies and research have concluded on the importance of starting children early in their lives with good dental hygiene and oral care. According to research, the most common chronic childhood disease in America is tooth decay, affecting 50 percent of first-graders and 80 percent of 17-year-olds. Early treatment prevents problems affecting a child’s health, well-being, self-image and overall achievement. The National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research estimates that children will miss 52 million hours of school each year due to oral health problems and about 12.5 million days of restricted activity every year from dental symptoms. Because there is such a significant loss in their academic performance, the Surgeon General has made children’s oral health a priority. Parents are responsible for ensuring their children practice good dental hygiene. Parents must introduce proper oral care early in a child’s life—as early as infancy. The American Dental Hygiene Association states that a good oral hygiene routine for children includes: ▸▸ Thoroughly cleaning your infant’s gums after each feeding with a watersoaked infant cloth. This stimulates the gum tissue and removes food. ▸▸ Practicing proper brushing techniques with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush upon eruption of the first tooth and discussing when your child is able to begin using fluoridated toothpaste as recommended by your pediatric dentist. ▸▸ Regular visits with their dentist to check for cavities in both the primary and permanent teeth and for possible developmental problems. ▸▸ Encouraging your child to discuss any fears they may have about oral health visits, but not mentioning words like “pain” or “hurt,” since this may instill the possibility of pain in the child’s thought process. ▸▸ Determining if the water supply that serves your home is fluoridated; if not, discussing supplement options with your dentist or hygienist. ▸▸ Asking your hygienist or dentist about sealant applications to protect your child’s teeth-chewing surfaces and about bottle tooth decay, which occurs when teeth are frequently exposed to sugared liquids. If you any concerns regarding your child’s oral health, feel free to contact Pediatric Dentistry of Weston. We strive to help all of the kids in our community have beautiful and healthy smiles! Pediatric Dentistry of Weston is located at 2863 Executive Park Dr., Suite 101, in Weston. For information, call 954- 217-1121 or visit www.westonkidsdentistry.com.

ast month ’ s editorial (Part 1) covered the pro -

cess in deciding upon the need and therefore the use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors, ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration, but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery, as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen, which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record, along with versatility of use, makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses, or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation, as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work, but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd., on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

Cones and Corneas By Inna Ozerov, MD

K

eratoconus is a topic that is unfamiliar to

most people, but of extreme importance to those patients who have it. Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea characterized by its progressive thinning, which then causes the cornea to assume a cone-like shape, hence the name. As keratoconus advances, the abnormally shaped cornea distorts light as it enters the eye, thereby causing blurred vision. Keratoconus may lead to severe vision impairment. Keratoconus is generally discovered in adolescence or the early 20s, although some studies indicate that children as young as eight years old may start to exhibit the disease. The rate of progression varies from one person to another. In fact, individuals who have a mild case of keratoconus may not be diagnosed until years later. Keratoconus is not always simple to detect, until it progresses significantly and the cornea’s abnormal shape becomes obvious. However, there are some signs and symptoms associated with keratoconus that can be detected early on. These include: progressive nearsightedness, irregular astigmatism, frequent changes in eyeglass prescription, distorted and blurred vision. What Causes Keratoconus? – The origin of disease is still being questioned, but there seems to be a genetic predisposition, often affecting more than one family member. Other causes that have been implicated in the development of keratoconus include: chronic eye irritation, allergic eye disease, severe eye rubbing, complications following laser eye surgery, Floppy Eye Lid Syndrome. Keratoconus Treatment Options – In mild or non-progressive disease, initial treatment of keratoconus is aimed at preserving the patient’s vision. This is

accomplished through the use of glasses, and possibly special contact lenses, such as rigid gas permeable contact lenses or scleral contact lenses. While these treatments allow most keratoconus patients to retain functional vision for a period of time, unfortunately, they do little to slow the progression of keratoconus. In its advanced stages, keratoconus causes progressive corneal thinning and scarring, leading to severe visual impairment. In this stage, corneal transplant surgery may be the only option for visual rehabilitation.

Collagen Cross-Linking – A Novel Approach to Treating Keratoconus

In 2008, the FDA began clinical trials for a new procedure called Corneal Collagen Cross-linking (CXL). This procedure, performed by a few highly skilled eye surgeons, offers keratoconus patients a chance of achieving long-term relief from this devastating eye disease. Corneal cross-linking is the only treatment that stops the progression of keratoconus in most people, eliminating the need for corneal transplant surgery. The studies are indicating that this procedure is long-lasting, likely not requiring repeat treatments in the future. Up until now, the options for disease stabilization have been limited, until cross-linking came along. In addition, keratoconus patients are not the only ones who can benefit from this procedure. Patients who have experienced complication of LASIK, including progressive thinning of their corneas, are excellent candidates for this procedure as well. Here is to happy and healthy corneas! Holiday Cheer? By Evan Baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with glee-

ful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully, the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. For couples with minor children, who have been divorced in the past five years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas Day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2013, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Healthy Holiday Eating Gina Sweat MS, RD, LDN and Lilian Craggs DHA, RDN, LDN The holidays are the time of the year when maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging. The temptation to overeat increases at holiday gatherings and the busyness of holiday shopping causes some people to forgo their exercise regimen. Registered Dietitians, Gina Sweat and Lilian Craggs offer us these practical tips. How do I go to a holiday celebration and avoid overeating? There are a few ways to accomplish this. First, avoid going to a celebration on an empty stomach. Skipping meals can lead to consuming more calories at the event. Another technique you can use is eating more vegetables than fatty and sugary foods. Keep in mind that it is not impolite to tell the host that you are full and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much.

Sometimes the holidays become stressful not only for weight management but also from shopping and holiday crowds. What are some simple tips to reduce these stressors? If you realize that you are feeling stressed, try doing something that brings you joy instead of eating. This can be reading a book, getting a massage, walking your dog, among many other activities. We also encourage people to plan ahead. A simple tip is to prepare the days’ meals ahead of time and use the calendar or reminder feature to help you shop early. Planning can help you avoid the stress of crowds which could lead to eating fatty or overlysugary holiday foods. Don’t let the stress of the holidays lead you to emotional eating. Eat as a response of your body’s physiological hunger rather than “mental” hunger. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers educational lectures and programs throughout the year designed to promote healthy living. For more information about our Non-Surgical Weight Loss Program or to schedule a consultation, please visit clevelandclinicflorida.org or call 800.639.DOCTOR.

It is my year to host a holiday party. What can I do to make it healthier and less fattening than traditional holiday parties? You can always offer healthy alternatives. For example, try substituting baked apples with cinnamon and fat free whipped cream for the traditional apple pie dessert. You may also offer diced apples sprinkled with caramel sauce, or a simple fruit salad. One can still enjoy a sweet treat without exceeding calories. What is an easy way to use exercise to help prevent weight gain during the holidays? If you know you are going to consume extra calories, plan to exercise more the day before and after to compensate for the extra calories. In addition, taking a 15 to 20 minute walk after eating helps digestion and burns a few extra calories. Does holiday time necessarily mean I have to overeat? Change your thinking of the holidays and think of it as a time to enjoy family and friends rather than a time to indulge in food and extra calories. Instead of focusing on the food, spend the time connecting with your loved ones. Friends and family can be more fulfilling than food.

New Loan Modification Program Is 85% Successful By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

fter much anticipation , on April 1, 2013, the new Loss

Mitigation Mediation Program (“LMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 20%. So far, however, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the LMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms. Here are some of the other benefits of the LMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised. A mediator will be appointed to your case. All negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ The other frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is the fact that lenders continuously misplace documents or require updated documents. Under the LMM program, there are no more “lost documents” by the bank, since all documents are uploaded to a single website to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is simply not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 if you are surrendering a property, but loan modifications under the LMM are only available under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under LMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. In fact, many consumers attempt to file their own and their cases are dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means that you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. Foot and Ankle Injuries in Dancers By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

I

njuries to the

foot and ankle are common in dancers. Twisting injuries are common when the dancer lands incorrectly and turns the foot down and in. Overuse injuries most commonly involve the tendons around the back and the inside of the ankle. They are more common in dancers who do not stretch properly or increase training time too rapidly. Certain foot types are more predisposed to twisting and overuse injuries. Dancers are prone to different types of injuries including: 1. Achilles Tendon – Injuries are due to inflexibility and overuse of the tendon. They are more common in dancers who are flatfooted and go barefoot. Stiffness and soreness are present after getting up from sitting. The pain usually starts to feel better with activity but recurs later. Rest, ice, therapy and occasionally a short period of immobilization may be necessary to allow the area to heal. 2. Impingement Syndromes – Pain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “on point” or “demi point”. The pain in the back of the ankle is made worse by the foot pointing down and may be caused by a small fracture to the cartilage in the back of the ankle (“painful os trigonum”). Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. Surgery may be necessary if unresponsive to conservative care. This can include an arthroscopy to the ankle, which will allow a dancer to resume activities in most cases within a week. An impingement on the back of the ankle may require an open or arthroscopic procedure that will allow the dancer to resume activities in approximately two to four weeks. 3. Fractures – Overuse bone injuries are common and can cause stress fractures to the foot or leg. Pinpoint pain and low-grade swelling usually are present on the bone. These injuries need to be immobilized in a cast or walking boot. During this time cross training is allowed to keep the dancer fit. Cartilage injuries to the ankle joint (“osteochondral fractures”) may also be present which would cause chronic pain and low-grade swelling to the ankle. 4. Ankle ligaments – Can be injured due to twisting the foot down and under. Pain, swelling and discoloration may be present. Immediate treatment with temporary immobilization followed by physical therapy may be necessary to allow the injury to heal. If chronic instability develops, surgery may be necessary to completely restore mobility to the ankle and allow the dancer to resume all activities. Prognosis is usually excellent. 5. Sesamoid injuries – The sesamoids are small bones on the ball of the foot near the big toe that bear weight. Frequent jumping or overloading may cause the bone to break or injure the cartilage that covers them. Tenderness is felt directly on the bone and the dancer will be unable to participate. Temporary immobilization in a boot usually allows them to heal. Surgery may be necessary if conservative treatment fails. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. Great Reasons to List Before and During the Holidays By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor

M

any of us will be attending parties and

family gatherings in the upcoming holiday season. I am always posed with the question by several attendees, “Is it better to wait until after the holidays to list my home for sale?” Regardless of religious affiliation, a home shows much nicer during the holidays. Decorating usually requires cleaning, eliminating and sprucing. Data shows that more homes close during October, November and December. Many prefer to be settled to decorate the new home. Because South Florida attracts our frozen friends from the North during the winter months, it is more likely that serious, out-of-town buyers are looking to purchase – especially second homes in a warmer climate. Because most sellers wait until after the holidays to put their homes on the market, serious buyers have fewer choices. This lack of inventory could mean more money for you! Likewise, if the supply dramatically increases in January, the demand for your particular home could be affected. Whether buyers are coming from across the street or across the world, they tend to be more emotional during the holidays. Bidding wars could drive up your price. Local buyers have more time to look during the holidays. Traditionally, people take vacation to spend time with family and go shopping. Because Florida homeowners are known to provide lodging for out-of-town family, the “over-crowdedness” may create a curiosity for larger accommodations for their growing “group” for future holiday gatherings. With interest rates still low, this curiosity may get the better of them, and the hunt is on! Let’s remember tax season is around the corner. If a property purchase aids in tax liability, some might prefer to buy before the end of the year. Some also wait to get the bonus before changing jobs. Since a new employee may not want to wait until the spring to purchase and does not care to rent, a seller could capture that buyer’s interest! Sellers must remember that they can control the number and times of the showings to keep the peace with the family. An agreement between the parties may be drawn so that Closing and occupancy would occur after the holidays. By selling now, you may have an opportunity to be a non-contingent buyer during the spring, when there may be more houses on the market – giving you more choices and better prices. Regardless of when you want to sell, this is the SOLD data for Davie and Cooper City: Current Month vs. 1 Year Ago

Successful Students Count On the College Experts By Stacey Bomser

A

sk any high school senior and they

will attest to how competitive the college admissions process has become. The 2,000 colleges and universities in this country are growing increasingly selective. Getting good grades and scoring well on the SAT are no longer enough to assure acceptance into your school of choice. That is why so many students turn to the College Experts for its exceptional test preparation courses and college counseling programs. For the past 30 years, College Counselor Janet Ronkin has specialized in helping students prepare their personal resumes, essays and college applications. She explains the secret to College Experts’ success and how its programs help so many students get into their dream schools.

Before a student starts the College Experts curriculum we have them sit for a Diagnostic Test. The test provides a baseline for us to measure a student’s success. A student will matriculate through the first ten classes we teach and participate in a second Diagnostic Test about seven weeks after they start the program. Our students see significant results between the first and second Diagnostic Tests. We do not believe in homework because our students already have a full-load of courses and grades to maintain. We do, however, have materials available should students (or parents) request additional practice.

How many points can a student expect to gain if they use your program? Many of our

students have seen significant increases in their SAT and ACT scores. Our students’ average SAT score increase was 328 points. On average, students who have committed themselves to our program and focused on the fine points of the test, have scored in the 2000s and above on the SAT and 30 and above on the ACT test. The results are proudly displayed on our Wall of Fame board.

In what grade do you suggest students start a test prep program? The ideal time to

College Counselor Janet Ronkin, owner of College Experts, with College Counselor and Center Director Toni Feldman.

What distinguishes College Experts from other test-prep and college counseling businesses? We spend a great deal of time teach-

ing our students the skills and strategies to be successful on the SAT and ACT tests. Students have access to our program and materials for a year and can take our classes over and over again until they feel they have mastered the content. We also offer daily workshops and access to our Vocabulary Lab which focuses on the 500 most frequently used words on the test. Our college counseling clients have unlimited access to our college counseling staff. We spend a great amount of time getting to know each of our students and create a college work plan for each student including resumes, essays and scholarships.

begin with College Experts is when a student is beginning or in the 10th grade. The optimal time is truly during the summer preceding 10th grade so that students have plenty of time to prepare for the 10th grade PSAT which often determines class placement and possible National Merit scholar potential for the Junior year PSAT.

How does a student know if they would be more successful on the SAT or ACT? At

College Experts we believe in the integrity of both the SAT and ACT tests, since both tests are equally accepted by universities and colleges. We teach strategies and skills for both tests. We encourage every student to take both tests and find their niche.

56

dent. Our expertise is in preparing a list of colleges designed with the student’s goals in mind. We prepare a personalized marketing plan to get you noticed by the admissions committees. We even help with all of the paperwork after the acceptance letter.

What college admissions counseling services do you offer that are not available through a student’s high school BRACE office? College Experts provides individualized

attention that a BRACE counselor cannot provide. We are available outside of school hours and provide students with a stress-free environment where they can feel at home. Our staff is always available to assist students in brainstorming, editing and completing their essays and college applications on time. The process includes many steps that are intricate to each application.

Do you offer financial aid assistance? Our

expertise at College Experts is on getting students noticed and earning them non need-based scholarships. Last year our students earned over $5 million in scholarship monies.

You also offer a study skills class. Who is the target student? The Study Skills program

offered at College Experts was created with the middle school student in mind. The program incorporates a number of skills including note taking, reading for information, organizing strategies, and how to prepare for tests. This sixweek program is available several times throughout the year.

How does your Test Prep program work?

The College Experts Test Preparation program is designed to help students become more confident about the content on an SAT and/or ACT test. We have developed our own curriculum to help students gain a thorough understanding of critical reading, math and writing skills. We offer a total of 14 classes; seven classes in verbal skills and seven classes in math skills. Each class is two-hours in length and includes a lesson and a quiz so that a student may test their understanding of the content that the teacher covered in the class. We keep track of every student’s score and provide guidance to students on a regular basis. We believe in transparency of knowledge and encourage students to ask questions and practice their skills.

College Experts teacher Sharon Khadaran works with student Adam Pflanzer.

What is your pricing for the various programs? The basic program at College Experts The Wall of Fame recognizes those students who have scored exceptionally well on the SAT or ACT exam.

What college counseling services do you provide? Beginning as early as 9th grade, we

provide families and students with a personalized four-year action plan to get into college including high school course selection, project and resume building, pre-testing for Honors and AP classes, and scholarship exam preparation. We create an individualized plan for each stu-

starts at $1,199. College Experts offers affordable payment options as well as special promotions. We offer a very popular Refer a Friend program. Students who refer other students to our programs earn a $50 American Express gift card.
