Welcome to the Family

W

elcome, and thanks for reading the inaugural edition of Our City Fort Lauderdale! This is the eighth Our City Magazine. We already publish community magazines in Weston, Davie, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Miramar, Hollywood and Aventura. The Our City family of magazines are a bit different than most you might read. We are your source for local community and school news. In each of the markets we serve, our team of writers and editors cover events, accomplishments and news that matter to the people within our communities. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés; you won’t find them. However, do look for stories on some of the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. We also aren’t a society magazine. Our Seen on Scene pages in the back of this magazine are more likely to show children trick-ortreating than business power couples attending a charity ball. We love receiving pictures featuring our neighbors out and about in the community. In fact, if you have pictures you’d like to share or suggestions for community news stories, please email our editor at LauderdaleEditor@ourcitymedia.com. If you have a furry friend you are particularly proud of, send us a pic. We love showing off the cutest and most lovable pets. We also love to hear about our readers’ travels. Next time you go to an interesting place, take along a copy of Our City Fort Lauderdale, snap a pic with it, send it to us, and you just might see yourself in print – and win a gift certificate to a local restaurant or store. Again, let us welcome you to the Our City Magazine family. We look forward to sharing the adventure. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet

BY DEBBY TEICH f you are thinking of adding a loving and loyal pet to your family, the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) offers many ways to connect with one. The public can visit the shelter, located at 2070 Griffin Road, or participate in several events HSBC is offering in Ft. Lauderdale and the surrounding areas this month. Whether you’re looking for big or small, purebred or a unique mixed breed, you can find it at HSBC. HSBC provides shelter, aid and responsible adoptions to animals entrusted to its care, and educates the community about respect and kindness to all animals. The 33,000 square-foot, air-conditioned shelter can house over 300 dogs and cats. In 2016, the non-profit placed nearly 7,000 dogs, cats and other furry friends. “The Humane Society of Broward County gets amazing animals that need a second chance,” said Cherie

Wachter, Vice President of Marketing. “If you or your family is looking to add a pet, we hope adopting – whether from the HSBC or another shelter or rescue - is where you will look. Many of these animals are at shelters because of no fault of their own and they need caring, understanding people who will open up their heart and home to them.” Some of the HSBC’s events this month include: • Puppy PJ Party – On November 7, from 5:30pm to 9pm, it’s time for parents to get a night out! Children, ages 4-12, can put on their best pajamas and visit HSBC for a Puppy Pajama Party. There will be fun activities, pizza, popcorn, movies, and, of course, furry friends. Cost is $40 per child. Held at HSBC. • Pit Stop at Road Dawg Saloon – On November 18, from 2pm-7pm, bring your dog and help support homeless pets. The Pit Stop will be holding a fundraiser to promote the education and adoption of bully breeds. There will be drink specials,

raffles, and a charity poker game. Held at Road Dawg Saloon. • Black Friday – On November 24, avoid the mall crowds on “Black Friday” and add a furry friend to your family instead. HSBC will be offering “Door Busters” all day long, which means the adoption fee will be waived for select pets. In addition, the adoption fee will be half price for all pets one year of age and older. Held at HSBC. When you adopt from the Humane Society of Broward County, all pets are spayed or neutered before going home. In addition, they receive preliminary vaccinations, a microchip, heart worm test for dogs over seven months, feline leukemia test for cats, a limited 10-day health care plan courtesy of VCA Animal Hospital, a bag of Purina ONE food, a 30-day trial membership in Trupanion pet insurance (restrictions apply) and more. ■ For information, call the shelter at 954-989-3977, ext. 6, or visit www.humanebroward.com.

■ FEATURE STORY BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

ong before weight loss therapies were popular, over 20 years ago, Dr. Val Manocchio had been helping his patients achieve solutions to their weight problems. This was when he first discovered that weight loss was only the beginning of maintaining an optimal healthy life. With Board Certification in Antiaging, Functional and Regenerative Medicine the doctor prides himself in addressing the root cause of the disease, and not covering the symptoms by the use of drugs. He believes that Integrative Medicine is like an “extended warranty” which uses evidence-based proven medical practices to slow, correct, and even reverse disease. Doctors Best Wellness Center promises its’ patients that with their guidance and program, they will enhance energy, stamina, longevity; improve memory, concentration, and focus; revitalize sexual health for both men and women; reduce stress; improve sleep; relieve menopausal symptoms, and control weight. Medical science has unlocked the secrets to slow progression of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, bone loss, even dementia. Therefore, adding years to a patient’s life, and life to those years. Recently, Val Manocchio MD., Medical Director of Doctors Best Wellness Center, took the time to answer a few commonly asked questions about his South Florida clinic.

What services do you provide? We specialize in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and Medical Weight Loss, but also offer IV Nutrition in including oral, IM & IV infusion therapy in our Wellness Center. I have 25 years of experience performing cosmetic procedures such as Botox and Dermal Fillers, spider vein removal (on the nose, face and body), and fat sculpting. The magical benefits of our state-ofthe-art PRP (platelet rich plasma) procedures I always offer affordably. The O-Shot ® and P-Shot ® will improve sexual function and heighten sensitivity but also end urinary leakage 90% of the time. The “Vampire Facelift” ®

damage cell membranes and our immune cascade comes to the rescue only to cause more harm. Similarly, GMO food also generates inflammation and results in low organ function, high sugar and autoimmune disease. Additionally, hormone levels today are 30% lower than the previous generation. Science has proven that hormone deficiency does speed up aging while Hormone Replacement will appreciably slow progression of all disease. Hormone levels drop precipitously after 35 years old and this is particularly detrimental to our ongoing health. Although considered normal, hormone levels were never predestined to plunge so premature and ominously. The bottom line on inflammation – DNA shortens faster, and we lose years.

Doctors Best Wellness Center Helps Patients Discover Youth Again restores a youthful glow, and PRP can repair painful joints or stimulate hair growth. How does Antiaging Medicine differ? Doctors are taught to treat disease by covering symptoms with drugs, often focusing only on lab tests, not patients. I strive to optimize health and eliminate, not cover up, disease. Most conventional medical doctors still believe that rapid progression of growing old is inevitable. I do not accept that weakness, fatigue, depression, cognitive difficulties, lack of vitality, even wrinkles are inescapable. Aging like any other medical condition can be treated: We can slow down organ degeneration.

I don’t make false "fountain of youth" promises; I am a certified professional practicing therapy which is scientific, evidence-based, and well documented by peer-reviewed journals. Properly applied protocols will both extend your life span and prolong your health span (your productive years). How has modern day technology advanced the aging process? I have faith that God’s plan for us was heavenly - birth, reproduction, then a long, healthy life, gracefully growing old. Unfortunately, technologic advancements have led evolution down a path of rampant disease. Electromagnetic waves from cell phones, radio and TV, radar, computers, etc.

What is another issue that concerns you? Our population runs elevated blood sugars regarded as “normal” by our trusted medical doctors, except average sugar levels were a great deal lower just 50 years ago. So-called normal sugars when actually too high are quite destructive and surely warrant aggressive intervention yet are often ignored. What distinguishes you from the competition? I am passionate about helping others. I prefer to spend quality time with my patients to get to know them, hear about their health concerns, and then educate them on the best way to achieve optimal health. I want them to understand the entire individualized process and how we can fix health issues together. Is there anything else you would like readers to know? I practice the “best of both world’s philosophy”, by combining conventional medicine with evidence-based alternative practices for a complete approach to health.

BY TERRY JAILLET etired Miami-Dade Police Detective and Hostage Negotiator Tom Hixon is a serious man. During his career in the Police force he saw firsthand how children’s lives can be upended from an early age. This is part of the reason Tom chose to become a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) . Guardians ad Litem are courtappointed advocates who represent the best interests of children who have been removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. These unpaid volunteers act as a child’s advocate and as a mentor during what is typically the most disruptive moments of his or her young life. Tom’s first case was a case involving a young man with both emotional and legal challenges. He had been in and out of the juvenile justice system for some time. Tom was referred to the case just after the young man had been placed is a residential treatment facility. Tom is a man of great presence. His

calm and compassionate demeaner was exactly what this young man needed. Tom’s used his career as a police detective to help him make a connection with his mentee. It took time, but now Tom receives calls form him for guidance. Tom is the one constant male influence that this young man has ever had. According to Kerry-Ann Brown, GAL’s volunteer recruiter, “The program represents over 2,700 children in the dependency system in Broward County and there is a great need for volunteers. There are no specific educational requirements, as we train our volunteers. You just have to have the heart and be ready to give your time to be a Voice for a child.” Children who have a Guardian ad Litem volunteer do better in school, find a safe permanent home more quickly, are less likely to return to foster care and receive more services to help them than children in similar circumstances without one. Unfortunately, Broward County has only half the number of volunteers needed.

■ If you are passionate about children, and want to make a difference in a child’s life by breaking the circle of abuse, you can help by becoming a Guardian ad Litem volunteer, contact our office at 954-831-6214 or email us at 17th.recruitment@gal.fl.gov You can also find more information about the program by visiting www.galbroward.org.

Fort Lauderdale Rotary Spearheads Relief Efforts for Hurricane Ravaged Keys

S

ome victims of Hurricane Irma are feeling a little bit better thanks to the efforts of The Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club. The Club joined Rotary clubs from throughout the area to deliver donations for the victims of Hurricane Irma in the Keys. Rotary Club President Jonathan Keith helped lead the volunteer effort immediately after the storm. Volunteers used social media and personal contacts to get the word out. Members of Broward County Rotary Clubs opened their homes to collect donations. Wow, did they come. Contributions flowed in, both large and small. Rotarians collected all manner of things, including hats for protection from the sun, clothing, water, personal hygiene items, nonperishable food, leather gloves, bug spray, and tools to work with. The relief effort began with a sea plane ride to Big Pine, Islamorada, on Wednesday, September 13th. Keith joined fellow Rotarian, Rick Marshall. According to Keith, “It's been 25 years since we have seen this kind of devastation in South Florida. CAN DO KIDS

Lights, Camera, Action … Area Teen Takes Center Stage as Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

N

BY BEVERLY PERKINS ova Southeastern University School student Libby Lapayowker was one of twenty-four selected to be a Teen Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The 9th grader was mesmerized the first time she stepped into a theatre and instantly knew she wanted to be a part of it. However, unlike many who enjoy the spotlight on stage, Libby prefers to be backstage. Each year only two dozen students are selected to be a Teen Ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. These chosen few will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the arts by attending performances and workshops presented at the Broward Center and their affiliated venues to enhance their knowledge of the arts. The students will be given complimentary tickets to see Broadway shows, opera, ballet, jazz and concerts while explor-

ing and learning the behind the scenes operations of the performing arts. Libby’s introduction to technical theatre began in middle school. She was interested in makeup and costumes which provided her with the opportunity to truly see what happens behind-thescenes. The ambitious teen learned the entire theatrical process from constructing sets to designing lights and sound. After having a few productions under her belt, she desired more responsibility. The sound designer then allowed her to assist with operating the sound board, and she literally found her calling. “Sitting behind the console, I felt like a puppeteer making the show move. I could hear the stage manager on my headset calling each cue for lights, sound, and scene change. I knew instantly, that I wanted to be the voice on the other end of the headset calling the show,” exclaimed Libby. “Luckily, in my field, there aren’t too many other students fighting for the position. By the end of

eighth grade, I had stage managed three productions and even helped direct two of them.” The NSU School freshman has also been elected to be the Technical Representative on the Theater Arts Board where she will be responsible for organizing crew meetings and helping new students get involved in crew. Additionally, she earned the position of Stage Manager for the Fall High School Production of Orlando as well as the One Act Piece of Roots of Red for the District Thespian Competition in which many schools compete. “Being selected to be an Ambassador for the Broward Center, I hope to learn further in depth what it means to make a major production come to life, whether it is a Broadway show, Dance, or Orchestra performance,” added Libby. “I feel lucky to have found my passion so early. Typically, students my age aren’t given opportunities like this, most of our stage managers were juniors and seniors.”

Teen Organizes Donation Drive to Help Hurricane Victims

F

BY STACEY BOMSER ollowing Hurricane Irma, Janelle Naylon was disturbed by the damage she saw. Not at her home, which lost palm fronds and a few pool enclosure screens, but rather by images of the Caribbean islands that had been ravaged by the storm. The devastation in St. Thomas was particularly upsetting to the American Heritage School sophomore, who heard stories of the destruction and despair from employees of the PriceSmart store on the island. Her father works for the company, which is a membership club like Costco with stores in the Janelle and Bill Naylon help sort donations.

Caribbean, Central America and Colombia. “I heard from my dad that he was not able to contact his employees in St. Thomas for at least three days after the storm hit. I saw photos of the destruction on the island and decided to help,” shares Janelle. She organized a donation drive, collecting clothing, diapers, medicine, bug spray, hygiene products, rubber gloves and other critical items from family, neighbors and PriceSmart employees. Janelle says she was pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of support. “I felt proud to know that in today’s world, people are still willing to help.” The generosity from the community was incredible. “We took four carloads of donations from my home to the PriceSmart office in Miami, where the donations were sorted and boxed,” explains

Janelle, noting they had four pallets of donations for the island. “At the time, the St. Thomas airport was closed to commercial flights, so a private plane flew in with the basic necessities requested by the people in St. Thomas, such as baby items. The four pallets were shipped via the Port of Miami, along with vital merchandise for the store. It took six days for the donations to arrive.” Janelle says donations were also sent to Puerto Rico to aid victims of Hurricane Maria. The young humanitarian says it was very gratifying to help others in need. She says the most rewarding part of this experience was “hearing how happy the employees of PriceSmart were to receive our donations.” As a member of the Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy at her school, Janelle is involved with several community service projects such as packing dry meals to send to a foster home in Colombia, hosting events at Children’s Harbor, and packing and sorting food at Feeding South Florida. Janelle also volunteers at Cleveland Clinic Florida.

Welcome Home! Honor Flight South Florida Veterans Honored

BY BEVERLY PERKINS onor Flight South Florida is always looking for World War II Veterans in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties to participate in “Operation One Last Mission”. This program takes veterans to Washington, DC on a charter flight at designated times during the year, and is free of charge to those nominated. The non-profit charity wants to thank and pay tribute to as many heroes, especially World War II (WWII) veterans, by honoring and remembering them. The fully escorted trip recently returned from one of their fall flights. One lucky recipient of the 140 veterans that were chosen was Hallandale resident Sumner (Shamai) Taplin. The World War II veteran was guided by a Vietnam vet on the 24-hour journey. Besides the obvi-

H

ous trip highlights, another is the infamous “mail call”. On the plane, all participants had their names called individually, and letters were distributed from family, friends, and students from around the state. Taplin was beyond ecstatic to be the recipient of 300 letters from his loved ones. The mission included round-trip airfare, deluxe bus transportation, meals, souvenir t-shirts and other amenities to travel comfortably. Disabled Veterans are also welcome. Top priority is given to the most senior patriots to make sure they have an opportunity to take part of this program. This experience included visits to the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifice. An outstanding moment of every trip is the visit to the World War II Memorial. In addition, each trip includes a stop at the Marine Corps Iwo Jima Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery where one can see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Past Honor Flights have included stops at the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War

Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, and even the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The group was escorted through the city by a team of well-trained volunteers and a police motorcade. In addition, each veteran was accompanied by an assigned guardian who pays their way to be a part of the remarkable experience. Upon their arrival at the Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport, a special welcome parade with bagpipes, patriotic music, and plenty of loved ones waving American flags greeted the WWII and Korean veterans as they were pushed in wheelchairs by Vietnam veterans. Hollywood resident Joyce Bak said, “Welcome home!” to a Vietnam vet, and with tears in his eyes he said, “I have been waiting 40 years to hear that.” ■ Veterans are encouraged to register for flights at www.honorflightsouthflorida.org or by calling 855-359-1838. Honor Flight South Florida, Inc. (HFSF) is a federal non-profit 501(c)(3) charity, 100% all-volunteer organization dedicated solely to honoring Veterans in Broward, Dade, and Monroe counties. Every donation received goes toward honoring and flying the Veterans to Washington DC.

Local Business Gives Back to Raise Funds for Hurricane Victims

T

BY HELEN PENLAND he owners of Modern Sixties Wine Lounge, located in Fort Lauderdale, Whole Heap, Diane Wozniak of Diane’s Cruise Planners are raffling off a 14-day Nordic Adventure cruise that departs from Amsterdam July 14, 2018. All proceeds will benefit victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The cruise will travel through the fiords of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Only 400 tickets are available at a cost of $100 each. Tickets went on sale October 5th and the raffle will take place when all 400 are sold. When co-owners Chad Thilborger (chef and owner of A Whole Heap) and Frank Ruppen opened the wine lounge, they did so with the intention of making it a place that would benefit the community. Their goal was to make the Fort Lauderdale area an even better place by creating a business that would give back again and again. Simply put, they have big hearts and it is in their character to help others. The idea for the raffle came about shortly after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. Here’s how it happened. Days before the arrival of Hurricane Irma, Chad and Frank evacuated

South Florida to New Orleans where Chad was born. After they arrived and settled in, they went for coffee with friends who survived Hurricane Katrina. Their friends told them they were going to Rockport, Texas for a second time to help victims of the hurricane. Immediately Frank said they would help. They loaded four large rental trucks and a trailer all day Saturday, September 11th. The trucks were loaded with fresh food, nonperishable food, water, paper towels, toilet tissue, bleach, personal hygiene items, and diapers. In addition, there were 100s of shovels, mops, work gloves, brooms and saws, and much more. The trailer carried a large grill. After driving through the night, they arrived in Rockport Sunday morning. Within two and a half hours, they were serving hot meals of shrimp creole, grilled wings, homemade Mac-n-cheese, grilled hot dogs, and fresh chili to the people of the area. In total, more than 2,000 meals were served in one day. They returned to New Orleans then back to Fort Lauderdale when the electricity was restored. After a few phone calls, the Nordic cruise raffle project came to life!

ith Thanksgiving approaching, we take the opportunity to reflect on all the good in our lives. Every day, we have the chance to choose our outlook in life, to consciously acknowledge the many gifts and blessings that we have been granted. Being grateful is a practice, an awareness that should be reinforced, a sincere attitude, a core value that should be passed down and taught to our children. We all tend to get caught up in day-to-day stresses and forget the things that are important to us. Life will always have challenges, but the approach we choose certainly makes our problems feel less daunting. The awareness that comes from giving thanks is an upward, positive spiral. We live fuller lives when we are grateful. We attend to others more lovingly. More importantly, we care for ourselves and families with a greater sense of acceptance and appreciation. How we choose to manifest gratitude is very personal. We can wake up every morning, pray and have mindful moments. We can journal, develop a daily practice or ritual, tell our loved ones our feelings. We can also pay it forward. In an era where we have exposure and access to many materialistic things, our children can learn by example. It’s our responsibility to model for our children the joys of giving back and choosing the happiness that comes from making a difference. We can do so at home, as well as by selecting a school for our children that shares and celebrates the values of giving and gratitude.

Brain Games

Answer Key

Solution

Gratitude – a selfless behavior – sparks acts of kindness and give us purpose. When we live with gratitude, we feel happier as parents and are better contributors to our families and community. Gratitude is essentially a gift that we give to ourselves and, in turn, to our children. Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, world-renowned author and lecturer in the areas of leadership and positive psychology, and teacher of the most popular course at Harvard University, points out that we can become happier when we cultivate and practice the habit of gratitude. Let us acknowledge this Thanksgiving holiday’s historic teachings and be grateful for every minute of our amazing lives, our families, our friends and our freedom. And may we transmit this sense of gratitude to our children. ■ From early childhood through Grade 12, Scheck Hillel Community School educates and inspires students to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values through an individualized college preparatory curriculum highlighted by STEM and design, Capstone, college dual enrollment, arts, athletics and service learning. Its 14 acres include a 115,000-sq.-ft athletic complex with additional academic expansion plans. Scheck Hillel is one of the world’s largest Jewish community day schools and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. For information, please visit eHillel.org.
