November is a very popular month for the return of Snowbirds!
Home watching has come a long way since Snowbirds began the tradition of leaving their Florida nest! The nest has become an important investment and to care for and have it watched, is essential!
An official association of certified professionals called the NHWA (National Home Watch Association) has been in operation for the last 13 years and the number of local experts has been growing ever since. https://www.nationalhomewatchassociation.
org/ Members have been screened and must be accredited and insured to be recognized annually.
There are obvious issues that histori cally will tend to need regular monitoring. Water damage in Florida is without a doubt, the
number one item on Home Insurance claims! A/C malfunctions and pest infestation are also important possible nightmares while you’re away from your vacant house! Other examples and very costly claims are molds, sugar ants/insects, appliance breakdowns, roof/pool leaks, and various plumbing issues that may also involve neighbors!
Flushing every toilet along with running water at all sinks and garbage disposal are the main plumbing arteries that need to be activated regularly. AC checks along with structural verifications of lanais, ceilings, roofs, garage door openers, and all lights and alarms.
Communication with various vendors/mainte nance experts such as pool, landscape, tree care and Pest Control. HURRICANE PREPARATION PLAN is a must!
To discover obvious issues and notify property owners is one thing but being able to react promptly and find trustworthy local experts is another.
You might run into heavy opposition from the insurance inspector if you cannot prove to them that someone has been there in the last 2 weeks! And modern HomeWatch companies usually offer GPS-date stamped reports with more than 25 pictures to back up the proof!
Your Florida investment deserves the supervision of experts and it’s always great peace of mind to know that someone, as caring as you, is there watching your Florida pied à terre!
Welcome back home dear snowbirds!

November is a time when many of us take a moment to give thanks. But understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspec tive. Social media algorithms combined with the current political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to imagine them.
It is easy to be pessimistic. There is another bloody war in Europe, we are still feeling the after-effects of the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu, Global Warming continues to pose a long-term threat, and price inflation has returned to the economy. These challenges may be with us for some time, but they will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast.
100 years ago, in 1922, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 79. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven homes did not have a bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist.
Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort, in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melt ing pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for.
We are thankful for all we have.
Sincerely,

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertil ity of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.
Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.
Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com

Local schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in part nership with more than 200 schools, will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive blossomed into a year-round volun teer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago.
Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week.
Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods, and grocery gift cards. Collections began mid-October and will conclude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distri bution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving.
The mission of Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to local
students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their commu nity in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other neces sities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact.
Members of the local community are encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items. Donations can be dropped off at Harvest Drive’s
flagship school, Western High School, on Wednesday, November 16 from 3:00 pm9:00 pm.
Food will be distributed at a number of locations across Broward County. Local distributions sites include:

he Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) welcomed 15 new officers to the force on October 15th. The newly sworn officers will support the mission and vision of the City Commission to enhance public safety.
The FLPD continues to see improvements in its efforts to combat violent crime. Police Chief Patrick Lynn reported that Part I Crimes are down citywide this year compared to last year. Homicides are down 29%, sex offense crimes are down 20%, and aggravated assaults are down 4%. This translates to an overall decrease of 4% of violent crime citywide.
Chief Lynn provided an update on Police Community Engagement Initiatives at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 18, in City Hall’s Commission Chambers.
“We need to get back to where we were, pre-covid. It is my philos ophy that the District Captains, are essentially District Chiefs. While we hold them accountable, we need to give them the tools to be successful,” said Chief Lynn speaking about the manpower increase.
Lynn has been Chief of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since March after a tumultuous period where his two predecessors faced scandal. Lynn has been in law enforcement for 35 years, beginning as a patrol officer with the City of Pembroke Pines Police Department in 1982. He then rose through the ranks retiring as the city’s Deputy Chief in 2007. He also briefly served as the Police Chief for the Town of Davie Police Department.

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2.] It originated in Mexico and is celebrated broadly across the world. Although associated with the Western Christian Allhallowtide observances of All Hallow's Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning.
The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. Fort Lauderdale’s obseverances will take place on Tuesday, November 2 with a candlelight vigil in downtown Fort Lauderdale and on Saturday, November 5th with a processional and celebration.

Tarpon River Brewing is a unique new gastropub with a full line of craft beer made on-site, and a mouth-watering, beer-in spired food menu. The brewery is nestled between the Tarpon River and the New River, which have served as the lifeline of the Fort Lauderdale local community for generations.
Tarpon River Brewing was born three years ago as a partnership between Julian and Lisa Siegel of the Riverside Market and Adam and Jill Fine, owners of Native Brewing and Fresh Beer. Building a brewery was but a dream in those days and as a group, they came together, unconventionally, yet successfully to open up Tarpon River Brewing. To this day, unconventional has served them well and has become a part of their mantra!
The building was originally an 11,000-square-foot horse barn, called the Snyder Stables built in 1929. Within the historic space, there is a 1,000-square-foot house that serves as a taproom, tasting room, brewery, and kitchen.
This home away from home, built by locals, for locals includes a complete brewing system just outside the tasting room. Guests can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere with a beer in hand, and see precisely how their drink was made. Tarpon River’s tap list is as diverse as the owners of the brewery are. It ranges from golden ales to hoppy IPAs, dark lagers to fruited sours, and big stouts to wild ales.
They offer brews to satisfy everyone from the beginner beer drinker to the eccentric beer snob.
Tarpon River Brewing is a fantastic place to host an event. The private room is spacious yet comfortable and offers a casual
atmosphere to visit with friends. The launch party for Our City Fort Lauderdale was held there. Visit their website, www.tarponrivery brewing.com to book your party today.
The brewery also frequently hosts fun events. A couple of our favorites are Thursday night trivia and their Monday evening “Gears & Beers” bike ride. The bike ride is for beer lovers and bike lovers. It is a 10-15 mile ride around Fort Lauderdale that begins and ends at the brewery. Participants get a free beer!
Happy Hour is 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm at Tarpon River Brewing’s bar. All draft beer is $2 off and all glasses of wine are $1 off. They also offer beer-inspired “bar foods” to snack on including onion rings, hummus & pita, loaded french fries, or a giant pretzel.
Sunady brunch is served 11:30 am - 4:00 pm. In addition to their regular menu items, a number of brunch specials are on offer. Our favorites are the Chicken and Waffles with maple drizzle, shrimp & grits and breakfast burrito. In addition to their extensive selection of beers, Mimosa and “Beerosa” are available by the glass or, for $15, unlimited.
■ Tarpon River Brewing is located at 280 SW 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale. They are open 11:30 am - 10:00 pm MondayWednesday, 11:30 am - 11:00 pm Thursday, 11:30 am - Midnight, Friday, 11:00 am - Midnight Saturday and 11:00 am - 10:00 pm on Sundays. Visit them at www. They visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and the US Marine Corps War Memorial.
The volunteer-led organization was also honored with a proclamation by Broward County Mayor Michael Udine for the hub’s dedication to serving veterans in South Florida, commemorating the organization’s milestone 25th mission to the nation’s capital. Veterans on the flight were welcomed home at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with a celebratory homecoming ceremony.
“Each of our missions have been special in their own way and we are always so honored to be able to thank the veterans that join us on each of our flights, so to reach this milestone of 25 missions means a lot to us as an organization and everyone who has been a part of this
journey with us,” said Honor Flight chairman Mike Miskew. “Being able to organize a truly memorable day for our veterans is what makes these missions so important.”
Founded in 2011, Honor Flight South Florida is an independent hub of the national Honor Flight network that serves veterans in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The local South Florida Hub organizes honor flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports four to five times a year, also hosting additional volunteer-driven events throughout the year.
Each November, the hub hosts its annual Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds for upcoming flights scheduled for the following year. Honoring the late Rick Asper, founder and chairman of Honor Flight South Florida, the annual golf tournament is one of the hub’s key fundraisers and social events benefiting the organization’s programming for the following year.
The Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for November 4, 2022, at the Davie Golf and Country Club, is now accepting participants and sponsors. Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders receive a special discount for single-player registration.

Twenty four local students have been named Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Just 117 students who attend public or private schools in Broward County achieved this honor.
“This is an incredible honor for every student, and we are so proud of each of them for being recognized for their outstanding scores and academic achievements,” said education advocate Sandra Dubose.
The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states.

7,250 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar.
In order to become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recom mended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Semifinalists must also submit a detailed scholarship application which includes information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as honors and awards received.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2023. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 180 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 160 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join nearly 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

While some golfers have more athletic ability than others, every person can benefit from using mental skills to improve their lives and their golf games. Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment.
Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you cre ate. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen. When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones.
For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting
it become fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.”
To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above. Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned. Feel the emotion of happiness and success.
Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. You only have control over yourself because you are all you will ever have for certain.

For Rotary Fort Lauderdale, the century-old service organiza tion, November kicks off the season of giving with turkeys, toys, and many ways to serve the community. While other organizations typically support a single charity, these “people of action” partner with at least half a dozen charities each year, committing funds and a core of caring volunteers to a variety of holiday endeavors.
Rotary members fund, pack, and present hundreds holiday turkey dinners for those in need. They play “Santa” by delivering hundreds of toys to Salah Children’s Hospital, Anne Storck Center, Henderson Behavioral Center, and CDTC among others. Gift cards get donated to young men in foster homes. Donning bells and blinking lights Rotarians ring bells around town for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. They serve meals at the Broward Partnership for the Homeless and bring gifts to senior centers.
“Our motto is “Service Above Self” so we go the extra mile, helping others have a happy holiday,” said Rotary Club President Jaye Abbate. “It’s also fun and a great way to socialize,” adds new club member Anna Asuncion. “When I moved to town, being part of Rotary was a great way to meet new people and give back to the community.”
Last year Rotary Fort Lauderdale completed 100 community projects to celebrate their 100-year milestone, partnering with the City of Fort Lauderdale’s volunteer network managed by long time Rotarian Jorg Hruschka and other non-profits. “We can do it again,” says Abbate enthusiastically. “Our members are always eager to do more. I encourage other charities to contact us for any type of project throughout the year.” The real payoff, adds Asuncion is “seeing smiles on the faces of families or kids receiving toys and holiday meals … it just makes your heart happy.”
