Black History is American History

F

ebruary is Black History Month. The annual observance is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the U.S., school students learn about the contributions people of African descent have made to our county, communities, and the world. Many public observances are held across the country, and a renewed focus is made on the continuing struggles African Americans face. Before Black History Month was a nationally recognized observance, “Negro History Week” was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. He chose the second week of February for its observance because that week typically includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to encourage the teaching of Black History in schools. At that time, there was frequently little to no inclusion of the contributions and plight of African Americans in history classes. In the 1970s Negro History Week became Black History Month and is celebrated across the country. It is more important now than ever to remember the severe sacrifices African Americans have made. We must all remember historian George Santayana’s famous quip, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Remembering the worst of our past, as well as, the best, will help us all continue to become better versions of ourselves. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

T

he Hollywood Police Department’s (HPD) newest dedicated member raised his right paw to be sworn in... Casey is a K-9 Therapy dog and is partnered with Detective Dana Doklean and Officer Casey as his primary handlers. They are already making a PAWsitive impact on our community.

Casey was officially welcomed into the HPD family on Tuesday, January 18. He now has a badge just like any other deputy. K-9 Casey may look like a Beagle, but he is actually a Walker Hound and is a graduate of the prestigious Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Paws and Stripes program! The program selects dogs from the local Animal Shelter that they feel would make good therapy K-9s. Casey and his two handlers went through training and graduated with honors from the Paws and Stripes College. Casey was rescued and now he helps others. A Therapy Dog is a great asset for a

community in many ways. What immediately stands out is that a friendly dog knocks away the barrier of hesitancy to approach or engage a police officer. People forget they had any fear and go straight toward the dog. The dog helps her handler build a rapport with community members. Casey will work in a variety of settings, including forensic interviews, critical and traumatic incidents, crimes involving children or vulnerable adults, special events, community outreach, and at school demonstrations. Therapy dogs provide relief to those in anxiety-provoking situations, bring comfort to people who are grieving or lonely, and offer affection to individuals who are in institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. You will see a lot more of K9 Casey and the work he will be doing all around Hollywood. He loves a good back scratch, so if you see him on patrol,

Paws and Stripes Program

The Paws and Stripes College carefully selects and trains rescued dogs. Inmates are paired with shelter dogs and help train the dogs in both voice commands and hand signals. The dogs were housebroken, and learned basic obedience skills to include, heel, sit, down, stay, and come, all with the anticipation of getting the dog adopted into its Fur-ever home. The Paws & Stripes® program has advanced into the “Paws and Stripes® College” and offers the basic tenants of the original program (now called the Comfort Dog Program) while serving as the foundation for the “College”. Selected canine graduates of the original 8 week course now move into the advanced training program to serve as Law Enforcement & Multidiscipline Crimes Against Children Therapy Dogs.

Run, Don’t Walk to the 13th Annual ANF Group Tour de Broward By Jon Duka

F

or the past twelve years thousands of people have cycled, run or walked to for one common cause - to support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at its annual Tour de Broward event. Now in its thirteenth year, the need is greater than ever to raise funds for South Broward’s only pediatric hospital, which has become the leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. In Fiscal Year 2021,

JDCH cared for children needing 61,607 hospital outpatient visits, 7,455 pediatric surgeries, and 9,538 admissions and observation stays. The 13th Annual ANF Group Tour de Broward will take place Sunday, March 6th at Miramar Regional Park from 7:00 am-1:00 pm. If you can’t make it, have no fear, this year’s event is a hybrid, so anyone, anywhere can participate! Participants can choose from 50K or 100K bicycle rides, or a 5K run or 3K walk. There will also be the sportsthemed “Power of Play Kid Zone” which will provide healthy, fun activities for children ages 13 and younger. Registration fees range from $15-$60 depending upon the event you sign up for. Last year, more than 7,000 participants came out and

raised in excess of $800,000 for the region’s largest pediatric facility serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern MiamiDade counties. “Philanthropy is an important part of the growth of our hospital and Tour de Broward is a fun way for people of all ages and abilities to help ensure our kids continue to have access to next level pediatric healthcare,” said Caitlin Stella, MPH, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In its ten-year history, the Tour de Broward has raised more than $5 million for pediatric healthcare in South Florida. Funds from previous years have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children with a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions.

It houses the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, one of only two of its kind in South Florida. Funds have also supported programs for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping to improve the lives of many oncology patients and families. However, the need is greater because funds raised this year will help support the expansion of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, as we add four more floors with cutting edge medical technology so we can continue to care for the children that come to us for care.

at www.tourdebro▸ Register ward.com or at the park on the day of the event. For riders, there may be an additional fundraising commitment, although some exclusions apply.

The New Terminal 2 Art Gallery Features Local Artist

F

ort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in partnership with the Broward Cultural Division is proud to announce the Terminal 2 Art Gallery inaugural exhibition titled “Through New Eyes” by local artist Nava Lundy. Lundy is a nationally recognized artist best known for her series of large-scale paintings of Muses, which are Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, featuring strong, intriguing, and captivating women, and more recently for her hyper-colored paintings of animals. Located post-security, the Terminal 2 Art

Gallery displays a series of animal paintings in the north area and a series of paintings inspired by Muses in the south gate area. The artwork, created exclusively for this exhibit, is layered with nuanced color and texture. Additionally, a three-dimensional element gives it a sense of tactile energy. “Lundy’s exhibition brings a sense of joy and excitement to the space with its bright colors and themes that are accessible to all age groups,” said Phil Dunlap, Director of Broward Cultural Division. “The rotating nature of these exhibits will also provide a dynamic program featuring our local talent, which we hope passengers and employees alike will enjoy for years to come.” “What a great way to ring in the new year with the opening of this wonderful gallery in the newly upgraded Terminal 2,” said Mark Gale, FLL CEO/Director of Aviation. “We hope that these exhibits allow passengers to experience the cultural richness of our community while promoting our local artists by sharing their work with hundreds of thousands of passengers.” Parkland resident, wife, and

mother of three, Lundy paints out of her home studio. She received national recognition when immediately following the Parkland mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, she tried to comfort her 17 grieving neighbors by painting and donating portraits of their loved ones. “Through New Eyes” is a collaborative exhibition presented by FLL and the Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design program.

About Broward Cultural Division

Python Elimination Program Accepting New Participants

N

on-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles.

The Burmese python is now distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and areas to the north including Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Forest. A number of Burmese pythons have been found in the Florida Keys, but there is not yet confirmation of a breeding population in the Keys. The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board is taking aggressive action to protect the Everglades and eliminate invasive pythons from across the landscape. Starting in March 2017, the Python Elimination Program incentivizes a limited number of public-spirited individuals to humanely euthanize these destructive snakes which have become an invasive apex predator in the Everglades. The program provides access to python removal agents on designated lands in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. The program is now accepting applications for new python removal

agents. All submitted applications will be kept on file and reviewed whenever positions become available. Python removal agents will receive $10.00 per hour or $15.00 per hour depending on the area for up to ten (10) hours each day while actively searching for pythons on designated lands. For all eliminated pythons, the District will make an additional payment per python: $50.00 for pythons measuring up to four (4) feet, and an extra $25.00 for every foot measured above four (4) feet. See example below:

To be eligible, python removal agents must: • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age • Possess a valid driver's license • Possess a valid email address • Have a bank account for direct deposit

It’s also hard to believe that glass can be wearable until you see Chelsea Rousso’s fantastic Glasskinis! Chelsea is a fashion designer and glass artist in residence at WMODA and she will be shattering our illusions of glass at her Wearable Glass in Wonderland fashion show in the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts at the stroke of noon on Saturday, January 22. The costumes will be on display at the museum after the event and individual characters will be back at future dates for the Believe the Impossible program which runs through April 16. The new WMODA season of exhibitions and events is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s surreal story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland where she experiences a topsy turvy world not unlike ours today! “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast...” said the White Queen as she challenges Alice’s imagination. 7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Hollywood Home Up for Sale BY KIM COX

Remember not so long ago, when you

could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a tidy profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the home-selling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your

home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.

As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-605-0724 and enter 1000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

How Often Do You Hit Solid Shots? By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

I

mproving your golf game begins by improving your ball striking, as there’s nothing in golf quite like making pure contact. Once you experience this sensation, you’ll be hooked, trying to repeat it over and over again. Achieving solid contact tends to be difficult for many golfers; it’s what separates the pros and better players from average to higher-handicap golfers. The good news is, if you experiment with the accompanying tips and drills, you can learn how to hit solid and pure golf shots more often. Hands forward upon impact – As you strike the golf ball, the grip end of the club needs to be leading the hands and club head through the hitting area (a mandatory ingredient for hitting solid iron shots). This move causes the club head to compress the ball into the ground, which helps make your divot after the ball, not before. Correct posture – The second key to achieving solid contact is having correct posture throughout the swing, as this allows you to swing the club on the proper plane. The majority of golfers who struggle with making solid contact lose their posture as the club head connects with the ball. This leads to many miss-hits; fat and thin shots, hooks, slices and chunks. It is essential that you keep your posture, just as it is at address, throughout the swing. Control the Clubface – The final ingredient for solid ball striking is controlling the clubface through impact. In other words, the face of your club must be square when it contacts the ball. Most golfers have the face of the club too open at impact, which leads to miss-hits that cause loss of power and distance. The clubface should rotate from open (prior to impact) to square (at impact) to slightly closed (after impact). The timing of this face rotation is what separates good ball strikers from not-sogood ball strikers. Proper practice will improve this timing. Here are a few practice drills to try: Golf Ball drill – By placing an extra golf ball behind your ball (12 to 14 inches behind the target line), you will learn to strike the ball with a descending blow and have your hands leading the club head through the hitting area. If you use a scooping motion (hitting the ground

before you make contact with the ball), you won’t be able to strike your ball without first hitting the extra ball. Posture drill – Controlling your posture throughout the swing is something that all good players do, and most amateur players don’t. When the clubface strikes the ball, you must return to the same posture that you had at address. Practice by facing a mirror and taking a half backswing, then swing the club down to the ball, and stop. You should return to your address position. Keep repeating this motion until it starts to feel natural. On the range, run through this drill before you hit each practice shot. Release the Clubface drill – Put a band-aid

36 / Our City Hollywood / February 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

on the back of your left wrist. On your down swing, turn your left hand over, so the bandaid is pointing down toward the ground as you swing the club head through the hitting area. On your practice swings, do this slowly, so you experience the feel of the club head turning over upon impact. When hitting balls, try to just let this motion happen, and after a while it will become automatic.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

HOLLYWOOD UPDATE By Mayor Josh Levy

Hollywood Residents, The spring season is already underway and soon it will be summertime. Lots of work is happening at city hall, as always. From our community policing initiatives to neighborhood improvements, sidewalk, bicycling, and water infrastructure improvements, to ushering in smart growth and sustainable development, and investing in parks and recreation, our municipal staff is working on delivering an ever-growing list of projects. More on those initiatives can be found on the city website and in the city’s various publications that are delivered to residents by mail, email, and through the city’s social media channels. For this edition of Our City - Hollywood, I’d like to highlight a special achievement that is meaningful to our city in a more human way. In January of this year, we achieved a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index. The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ+ people who live and work there. Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. We are proud of achieving a score of 100 for the first time, especially since when we were initially approached by the leaders of the then newly formed Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council in 2019, our city’s MEI score was found to be only a 49 out of 100. In the years since, the score increased to a 70, then 83 and now to 100. To achieve this, our city’s management team studied the factors that weigh into the MEI score and worked to make a number of improvements that ensure an inclusive workplace, including revision the city’s HR policies to specifically address non-discrimination based on sexual orientation in the hiring process, better defining domestic partner and transgender health insurance benefits, providing annual anti-harassment and discrimination training that includes lessons on LGBTQ inclusivity, and reporting any hate crimes statistics to the FBI. The city’s elected leadership also contributed to the MEI score, by demonstrating our public support of LGBTQ equality through the issuance of a now annual Proclamation in Recognition of Pride Month, the purpose of which is to commemorate and recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally and internationally. Last, I’d like to note the participation of the Hollywood’s LGBTQ community on the city’s advisory boards. One such advisory board member is Todd Delmay, who is also President of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council and whom I commend for his leadership of our city’s efforts in all things LGBTQ. To learn more about the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council, visit www.lgbtqcouncil.com. Congratulations and thank you to all the LGBTQ+ Council members who are helping to ensure that everyone and anyone feels welcome to live, work, learn, invest and visit in our City of Hollywood.
