As Luck Would Have it, The City of Hollywood’s St. Patrick’s Day Festivities Are Back! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

t. Patrick’s Day, also known as The Feast of Saint Patrick, is a cultural and religious celebration which occurs on March 17th, the date of the death of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. Irish or not, everyone loves celebrating the joyous March holiday. The day honors Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is customary to wear green to symbolize the shamrock since Saint Patrick used the threeleaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The celebrations involve parades, festivals and lots of food and good cheer. Luckily, one does not need to go to Ireland to celebrate since the “19th annual Hollywood St. Patrick’s Day & Festival” will be held right in the heart of Downtown Hollywood between Hollywood Blvd. & Harrison Street on Sunday, March 12th from 12:00pm-6:00pm. The traditional parade begins at 1pm and will head down Hollywood Boulevard to Harrison Street between 19th and 21st Avenues. Radio personality Footy will emcee the parade featuring Grand Marshal Peggy Campbell, dozens of floats, local marching bands and spectacular bagpipe and drum corps including the famous New York Police Department Emerald Society

Pipe and Drum Corps. Anniversary Park will go green and transform into the “Magic of the Emerald Isle” children’s activity area featuring games and crafts for youngsters of all ages. Downtown restaurants will be offering festival specials including Irish favorites like Corned Beef & Cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie and green-colored drinks. “On St Patrick’s Day downtown Hollywood becomes a great public gathering space, no cars... only people,” says Jorge A. Camejo, Executive Director, Hollywood CRA. “The streets are filled with fun and laughter. It’s fun to watch!” In preparation for the parade, an artist will be painting the parade logo on Hollywood Boulevard near the main stage area starting at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10th; the public is invited to attend. Painting is scheduled to take approximately 4 hours to complete. Besides an exciting line-up of traditional Irish entertainment, the headliner UV the U2 Tribute Band will be performing. Performances will take place on the stage at 19th Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. “As evidenced by the attendance, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in downtown Hollywood is one of the more popular events we have in the City,” says Chuck O. Ellis, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. “The event has a hometown feel and we are almost always guaranteed great weather!” The annual event will be hosted by the Hibernians of Hollywood, City of Hollywood, and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency. Complete event information is available at www.stpatricksparade.com or by calling the City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts at 954-921-3404.

Theatre Volunteers Receive Standing Ovation BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Broward Center for the Performing Arts recently paid tribute to the nearly 1,000 volunteers who donated 120,000 hours of community service during the past season to the Broward Center and its affiliate venues. More than 600 volunteers attended an appreciation dinner where they were entertained with musical performances by cast members of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Avenue Q as well the Broward Center Spotlights youth vocal ensemble singing a medley from the upcoming production of Matilda. Plantation resident Judi Holland was recognized as the 2016-17 “Volunteer of the Year” for donating 1,385 hours during the season, which was the most by any volunteer. The prize package included a gourmet chocolate gift basket from Hoffman’s Chocolates, performance tickets including Intermezzo Lounge passes, and a certificate for dinner for two at Marti’s New Riverfront Bistro. The two volunteers who earned the most hours behind Holland this season were Fort Lauderdale resident Maria Orsini with 980 hours and Pompano Beach resident Alex Newton with 971 hours. The Broward Center also recognized 33 volunteers who were applauded for service of 10 years or more, and received their gold bow tie signifying this level of service. One of these outstanding volunteers is Hollywood resident Jean Dorto. Dorto has been a volunteer at the Broward Center since April 2006 (almost 11 years). She chose to volunteer at the Broward Center because she loves the theater and wanted to make the experience great for others. She also volunteers at the Humane Society of Fort Lauderdale and has been volunteering with them since 2000. “I enjoy volunteering at the Broward Center because you meet great people. Both the patrons and fellow volunteers,” said Dorto. “If I make one patron’s visit to the Broward Center great, it makes my day. I get so much from volunteering, it makes me feel great to assist a new patron or returning one. A perk is you get to see the shows as well!” Volunteers usher and serve as community ambassadors for the Broward Center and its affiliate venues: the Parker Playhouse, the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University and the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

Recycle Book Program Kicks Off in Hollywood Recycle Book

COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he City of Hollywood is committed to high quality education for its residents. Therefore, the Education Advisory Committee was established to support and promote this effort. A primary objective of the Education Advisory Committee is to advocate and encourage literacy. The most fundamental component of literacy is reading development. Therefore, the Education Advisory Committee initiated the “Recycle Book Program”. This strategy was implemented to help families build libraries in their homes for their children. New research indicates that having books in the home is strongly linked to educational achievement. “We find that books in the home have a positive payoff in improved test scores throughout the world,” writes a research team led by University of NevadaReno sociologist Mariah Evans. “The relationship is strong, clear, and statistically significant in every one of the 42 nations (we studied).” [1]

“A home with books as an integral part of the way of life encourages children to read for Helping Hollywood Families pleasure and encourages discussion among Build Home Libraries family members about what they have read,” Evans and her colleagues write, “thereby providing children with information, vocabulary, imaginative richness, wide horizons, and skills for discovery and play.” [2] Recently, Donna Greene, a representative of the Education Advisory Committee and Nadine McCrea, Founder of Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. visited children in the Washington Park community where they were the first recipients of book donations. The City is asking for everyone’s help to promote literacy by collecting new or gentlyused children’s books (age infant through young adult). Books can be dropped off at the locations listed below during regular business hours. Look for a collection box with the Recycle Book label. ▸▸ City Hall – 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, 1st Floor *Closed on Fridays. ▸▸ David Park Community Center – 108 N. 33rd Court, Hollywood ▸▸ Boulevard Heights Community Center – 6770 Garfield Street, Hollywood “The Education Advisory Committee envisioned the Recycle Book program as a way to promote literacy among Hollywood households,” says Clay Milan, Staff Liaison to Hollywood Education Advisory Committee. “So far, the program is off to an excellent start with over 100 children’s books collected. The Committee is looking forward to further promoting the program and its partnership with Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc.” Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. (CEC), a Hollywood-based, non-profit agency will distribute the books to eligible families in the community. All donated books will enable these families to share in the pleasure of reading. 1-2. The JDCH Cleft and Craniofacial Center Celebrate Milestones at Annual Picnic BY BEVERLY PERKINS

C

oinciding with National Birth Defects Awareness Month, more than 100 patients and their families gathered to celebrate their milestones and share their experiences at the “17th Annual Winter Picnic” at Topeekeegee Yugnee Park (TY Park) in Hollywood in late January. The picnic was organized by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) Cleft and Craniofacial Center in an effort to reunite patients with their medical team, provide support, and celebrate accomplishments. Staff and volunteers welcomed children as young as newborns all the way to teenagers. The event featured activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, bounce houses and more along with traditional fare of hot dogs, hamburgers, and snow cones.

14

“The picnic is an opportunity for patients, their families and the medical staff to celebrate their progress in a non-clinical and fun atmosphere,” said Bobby Brasher, Program Coordinator for the JDCH Cleft and Craniofacial Center. “It also gives the children time to spend with each other and be around others their age that have had similar life experiences and who have similar conditions.” Seven-year-old Sabrina was one of many children who came out to enjoy the annual festivities with her parents. Having 10 surgeries, this healthy and active little girl spent the day playing and running, and was most excited to have her face painted. “Today is very important for all of us because at the end of the day, it brings everybody together for a fun day with the kids minus the stares from people who don’t understand. It’s also a day of relaxation and support for parents where you are not sitting in a hospital room worried about the outcome or next surgery that is in line,” said Sabrina’s mom Shannon. “Bottom line, it is time with others where you can find support and who can remind you that you have something to celebrate - your child’s recovery and continued

It is led by a 14-member multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, nurses and therapists that provide specialized services including speech therapy, child psychology, plastic surgery, pediatrics, genetics, otolaryngology, audiology and more. “We work with patients from the day they’re born until they go off to college sometimes,” said Brasher. “They become a part of our JDCH family in that our team members are all essential in helping these beautiful young children and families succeed and move through life. We do it together and it takes a village as they say.”

The Modern Day Picnic in the Park – Food Trucks at ArtsPark BY BEVERLY PERKINS

COMMUNITY NEWS

F

ood trucks have become a huge culinary phenomenon over the past few years and have been popping up all over the country. They have evolved from small old fashioned lunch carts to large custom trucks with great graphics and full kitchens. Many food truck festivals are appearing in different cities, and Hollywood is lucky enough to have their very own each week. The mobile food court most definitely has something available to satisfy every palate. Where else can you get Texas BBQ, Vietnamese and Indian street food, Caribbean delicacies, gourmet gelato and organic cuisine at the same place you can get an all American burger? “Food Trucks at ArtsPark” in Young Circle happens every Monday evening, year round, from 5:30pm-9:30pm. For 6 years now, an average of 1,500 to 2,000 people attend each week where items vary in pricing between five to ten dollars. A minimum of 24 food trucks with 3 dessert trucks are always in attendance. Visitors can expect to see 12 different trucks at each event, so something different is always on the menu. The curator of Hollywood’s weekly event is Sef Gonzalez, better known as “The Burger Beast”. The South Florida distinguished food blogger has turned his hobby and passion for food into a career. He hosts an abundance of food truck gatherings from Hollywood to Kendall. The Miami-Dade native is sure that Miami specialties are always showcased such as: fritas, croquetas, and Cubanos along with an extensive list of other unique culinary creations. Recently, Burger Beast was awarded a 5 year contract with the City of Hollywood for the weekly event. For the business owner, food trucks are the best alternative for those wanting to open a restaurant. Operating expenses are much lower than paying high rent, a large staff and all those other necessary expenses which is why they have gained so much popularity. Sources say that to be successful in the business, one needs a unique specific menu and truly great food at good prices. For the consumer, food trucks are a fun way to feed the family. The variety of options ensures that everyone finds something they like, including the finickiest child. It also is a nice change from dining at the kitchen table, and a way to experience the great city and its people in which one lives. Here is a sampling of some trucks you can expect to find in the weekly rotation at the circle… ▸▸ 9 0 Miles To Go ▸▸ Cantina Grill ▸▸ A repas Las Gorditas ▸▸ Che Grill ▸▸ BC Tacos ▸▸ Cheeseburger Baby ▸▸ Best Pasta ▸▸ ChinaMan’s World Famous ▸▸ Big Fat Gypsy Food Truck EggRoll Truck ▸▸ Boba Station ▸▸ Churrasco Grill

iami Dolphins Hall of Fame Quarterback Dan Marino hosted the 7th annual Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism & Expo at Hard Rock Stadium late January. The annual event started in 2010 by The Dan Marino Foundation and has grown exponentially each year. Almost 20,000 participants gather together to walk, but they all share the same goal: to inspire the world to embrace autism acceptance. The event provides a powerful and inspiring platform for South Floridians to come together as a community in an effort to promote awareness, raise funds for innovative initiatives, and advocate for the needs of people living with autism. Individuals may start their own teams, join a team, or just come out to show support. “Money Raised Here, Stays Here”, is the slogan of the Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism & Expo. The foundation makes sure that every dollar raised through this effort stays in the local community. Participating Pre-K to 12th grade schools and non-profit autism direct service providers in South Florida receive 25% of the money raised by their walk teams to support special needs programming and services, as well as the Dan Marino Foundation. McArthur High School was just one of the many schools who came out to participate. Eileen Santiago, ESE teacher, represented the Mustangs at the WalkAbout with 25 students and 10 volunteers. Prior to the event, Ms. Bauman’s and Ms. Santiago’s classes collected donations from students, family and friends, while the Student Government Association (SGA) engaged the school in a month-long series of events to promote awareness. Additionally, SGA placed posters throughout the campus to educate students, faculty and staff. During the march at the WalkAbout Autism & Expo, the Mustangs showed

off one of the posters which was created by students in Mr. Newman’s horticulture class. Besides giving back to the autism community, those that participated enjoyed musical performances, activities, games and rides while also earning community service hours. “This annual event is a great time to not only participate in the inspirational walk, but to also socialize with others in the Autism community,” stated Santiago. This year the 7th Annual Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism was brought to the community by Walgreens and presented by Badia Spices.

ince its inception seventeen years ago, Broward Technical College has raised $500,000 and assisted an abundance of students in their many programs available at their three campuses: Sheridan, McFatter, and Atlantic. The 2017 event will be held on Tuesday, April 4th at the Signature Grand in Davie from 6:00-9:00pm. The 2017 event will be held on Tuesday, April 4th at the Signature Grand in Davie from 6:00-9:00pm. The theme this year is “Blue Jeans & Bling”. The casual theme makes it easier for everyone to attend, therefore it’s important to make reservations now as it’s been sold out with 500 people over the past few years. The Broward Technical Colleges Foundation will award scholarship dollars to future, current and graduating students of the Broward Technical Colleges for the purpose of continuing their education. One hundred percent of all monies raised will go toward student scholarships. The intent is to award those who will continue at an accredited post-secondary institution upon graduation. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their ‘moral character’, community involvement, class participation and grades. The founders of the Foundation were clear that this was not to be based on financial need. It was recognized that most applicants are under the age of 26, so financial need would be based on their parents’ income regardless of whether or not the parent was going to pay for their education. They also recognized that no matter where the financial need line is drawn, someone falls just above it. Many of the sponsors, restaurants, and caterers have been participating since the beginning in Scholarship Fund categories such as Diamond ($9,000+), Sapphire ATLANTIC ($5,000), Ruby ($2,000), Sparkle ($1,000), and Denim McFAT TER SHERIDAN ($500). Hollywood Resident is Living Proof That One Can Tackle Cancer BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

ive years ago, Hollywood resident, Camille Moses was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer one month prior to her 58th birthday. The prognosis was grim, as she was basically given a death sentence. Luckily, her positive attitude afforded her the opportunity to get a second opinion. She chose to go to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami - Miller School of Medicine. Fortunately, she made the right choice and underwent 34 chemo treatments without surgery at Sylvester. Camille is one of the lucky ones, and has been cancer free for 4 years now. She’s also proud to be a team captain for Team Hurricanes “Hurricane Camille Living Proof”, one of the many teams who participated in the “Dolphins Cancer Challenge” last month. Exactly 5 years to the day of Moses’ diagnosis, February 11th, the annual event was held. Over the last six years, the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) has raised over $16.5 million with 100% of participant-raised funds going directly to cancer research. Through her miracle story, Moses now works closely with Sylvester on their patient advisory council. Moses learned about the DCC, and did her inaugural ride last year. This year she was excited to come back and celebrate five years since her battle with cancer. Her enthusiasm enabled her to raise funds and encourage others to walk, run, and ride during the seventh edition of the popular community event. The DCC V11 weekend started with a Kickoff Party, followed by the signature event which included five bike routes through South Florida, a 5K run/walk, and a finish line celebration which featured a concert by the Counting Crows. This year

also included a Dolphins Youth Ride and Youth 5K for children ages 14-17 to extend the opportunity for cancer fighters to be of all ages and all capabilities. “The DCC is a way to give back, and I love the community that it brings together,” says Moses. “Nobody wants to be part of having cancer but the DCC makes it cool! It’s my community saying we are here with you. You are not alone!” For additional information, call (305) 943-6799 or visit www. DolphinsCancerChallenge.com. DCC can be found on Facebook at Facebook.com/RideDCC and on Twitter at @TackleCancer.

GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club Honors 2016 Volunteer of the Year BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

ixteen years ago, Hermine Vogler moved to Hollywood after her children were grown when she stumbled upon the Hollywood Women’s Club. She remembers how busy it was with women socializing as they played cards, and fell in love with the quaint historic clubhouse in which they met. She was instantly intrigued and joined right away. Since that day, she has been a constant fixture in the community. Vogler created the “HWC Day Group” eight years ago which now has over 35 members. The group has meetings with diverse speakers and interesting programs. Besides making life-long friends, all members are encouraged to participate and volunteer for the HWC’s community service projects as well as contribute to the fundraising efforts to restore the National Historic Clubhouse, which was built in 1927. Seven years ago, the group created the “HWC Bicycle Project”. The ambitious bunch wanted to raise funds to purchase bicycles during the holidays for deserving and needy students in Hollywood schools. Having only three bikes the first year, the group has proudly distributed fifty-five since its inception. Recently, Vogler was honored as the “2016 Volunteer of the Year” at the Hollywood Women’s Club December Day and Evening Meetings. President Carol

Fitzgerald and former President Isabel Wise recognized Hermine Vogler on behalf of the Club for her many years of dedication, commitment, leadership, and service to others. Besides a framed certificate and flowers, Hermine received a charm bracelet with a bicycle charm for the fabulous bicycle holiday give-away program she initiated. “This fabulous woman is an inspiration to know her: a natural leader and organizer who exhibits compassion, humor and honest caring for all she meets,” says Fitzgerald. “We love her!” Vogler is thankful for the dedication and generosity of the members and their continual support and contribution to the community and to the well-being of the Club and its charitable commitments. She proudly says, “It is an honor and a pleasure to be in the midst of such wonderful women.” The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Hollywood Women’s Club has a deep rooted purpose to make the community a better place by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. The organization, founded in 1922, and will be celebrating its 95th Anniversary in 2017. The Hollywood Women’s Club is a 501©3 tax exempt, total volunteer organization with a culturally diverse membership of over 100 women. Their Clubhouse functions as a center for community, social, educational and fundraising events and is available for rentals. New members are always welcome. For further information, please call 954-925-9394, visit the website www.hollywoodwomensclub.org, or stop by 501 North 14th Avenue, Hollywood, FL. 33020.

T

he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell, when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. oes this sound familiar? Your child comes home from school and while sitting in the kitchen over a snack, you engage in a wonderful conversation about the school day. When you ask about the day’s homework, chaos erupts! Your child can’t remember the assignment details. You calmly ask if they were written down in the daily planner and receive the response that the planner has been lost for weeks, but all the information is on a scrap of paper somewhere. Your child is now frantically searching the backpack for that scrap of paper and your floor becomes littered with crumbled papers. You then remember that you can view homework on the school’s website. All will be well! But then no one (including you!) can remember how to log into the website. And this is not the first time. For many children (and many of us adults), organizational skills and time management pose huge obstacles. In education, we refer to these as executive functioning skills, which is defined as a set of processes that all have to do with managing one’s self and one’s resources in order to achieve a goal. (Cooper-Kahn and Dietzel) Here are some pointers to help your child develop executive functioning skills to set them up for success. ▸▸ Ask your child’s teacher to provide a pack up checklist for the end of each day, including: ▸▸ Did I write down my assignments? ▸▸ How long should it take to complete each item? ▸▸ ·Do I have the correct materials? ▸▸ child to cross off items as they are completed. ▸▸ Make sure your child knows how to log into the classroom’s web page, which should have a syllabus, homework and test dates. ▸▸ Establish a consistent routine and a neat physical space to complete homework at home. ▸▸ Keep school supplies on hand. ▸▸ Keep a timer available; cellphones have timers! ▸▸ Post a calendar for long-term assignments and create a timeline. ▸▸ Build in breaks: work/break/work/ break. ▸▸ If writing is laborious for your child, encourage use of computer. ▸▸ Encourage reviewing and proofreading. ▸▸ Provide written reminders to place completed work into the appropriate folder in the backpack. ▸▸ Reinforce and praise effort. ▸▸ Place completed homework in the backpack, placed by the front door, ready for the morning. If assignments are digital, make sure your child has uploaded them or clicked “submit”. ▸▸ Encourage weekly backpack checks. Eliminate unnecessary items. ▸▸ Be sure not to over-program extracurricular activities. ▸▸ Make sure the whole family eats well and gets enough sleep. ▸▸ Stay calm. Your child follows your lead. We live in a digital world and, thankfully, many tools exist to help your
