Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Women’s History Month
P
resident Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation establishing the first Women’s History Month celebrated by the United States Government on March 4th, 1988. In his proclamation, President Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States. We decided to celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make Hollywood such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. Today the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel is serving her fourth term. The CEOs of companies like General Motors and Fidelity Investments are women, as are Vice President Harris and Speaker of the House Pelosi. Those leaders would certainly not be where they are today without the accomplishments of countless women before them. It reminds us of Issac Newton’s famous quote, “I have seen further by standing on the shoulders of giants.” As we reflect during this year’s Women’s History Month, we can’t help but wonder on whose shoulders our daughters and granddaughters will be standing. The Finnish-Russian professional ice hockey captain and center will do more than just “light the lamp” with each NHL goal he scores this season. Barkov, now in his eighth season with the notorious South Florida team, will help kids being treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). Signifying his jersey number (16), the generous South Florida resident NHL player will continue to contribute $1,600 for each goal he scores. Additionally, he will also provide a suite at the BB&T Center for each home game to support those connected to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Real estate is a profession where you see a healthy mix of men and women in the field. However, I have run across a few situations where other agents have gotten aggressive with me or talked down to me, which felt like was due to me being a female. When I found myself in those types of situations, the best thing to do was not to react. I showed no emotion, stayed professional, and remained in control of the situation. With time, the other agent soon realized that their attitude was getting them nowhere. My friendly responses diffused the situation, and they immediately started treating me better.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN? Real estate is a great career choice for a woman who is strong and outgoing. It is a fast-paced and adventurous job, where you should expect to be working 6-7 days a week, especially in the beginning. The best advice I can offer is always to be positive and friendly. Your job is to hold the deal together, not just for your client but for all parties involved. As a woman, it is essential always to be calm, professional, and pleasant to everyone. Whatever career you choose to go with, make sure it is one that you enjoy. I love meeting and working with so many wonderful people through my job, and many have become dear friends. Pick a career that makes you proud of who you are, where you feel that you are a positive influence in your community.

By Mayor Josh Levy ellow Hollywood residents, I hope this March edition of Our City finds you and your family in good health. It has now been a year with all of us having to modify our way of life in response to the Covid-19 coronavirus. As mayor, I appreciate everyone’s effort in continuing to wear a mask and social distance when you are around others outside of your household. With the vaccines beginning to be administered there finally appears to be “light at the end of the tunnel.” The vaccines are being administered in the order of priority established by the CDC and the State of Florida. People 65 and over, and people with chronic health issues are at the highest risk of severe illness caused by Covid-19 and were therefore placed at the top of the list. Many people outside of these priority groups are eager to be eligible for vaccinations as well, and the faster there is more supply of the vaccine, the faster the State of Florida and the federal government will open the vaccine opportunity to additional age and risk groups. To provide some perspective, in Broward County, the Florida Department of Health reported to have administered complete doses of the vaccine to about 100,000 people as of this writing. With two million people in our county, 17.1% (342,000) of which are age 65 and over, we have a long way to go in order to make the vaccine opportunity available to everyone. Besides the Florida Department of Health, the Florida Division of Emergency Management is also setting up vaccine sites, and we are thankful that they accommodated us in organizing a vaccine effort that was hosted at the Carriage Hills condominium in January and February, where 3,000 seniors were very thankful to be able to get vaccinated here in Hollywood. Additional sites will open in Hollywood as the vaccine supply increases. To request an appointment for a vaccine with the Florida Department of Health, you can register online at www. myvaccine.fl.gov or by calling 866-201-6313 (TTY 833-476-1526). Hospitals and local pharmacies are also part of the growing effort, so please look out for more information in the media and in city and county email and social media communications. As always, a lot is being worked on to ensure Hollywood becomes an evermore healthy city - financially, residentially, commercially, recreationally and environmentally. We’ve achieved an over 200 million dollar reduction in the city’s post-employment healthcare liability. Our bond ratings are AA with a stable outlook despite Covid. We’ve improved the city’s vacation rental ordinance to better protect neighborhoods from noise and other disruptions. The results of the first phase of the citywide traffic calming study will hopefully be presented to the City Commission in April. Alley and street resurfacing projects are underway with more to come. Drainage and flooding solutions are being evaluated as part of a new Stormwater Master Plan that is underway. New playgrounds are being installed in many city parks and much more. Over the course of the week leading up to Sunday, February 14, district schools conducted projects and activities that encourage service to others and raise awareness about important and meaningful causes.
