Celebrating Women’s Enduring Legacy
As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, we must recognize and honor the contributions of women who have significantly impacted our community, our country, and the world. From political leaders to activists, artists, and entrepreneurs, women have played a crucial role in shaping our society and paving the way for future generations.
In Broward County, we are fortunate to have a rich history of women who have made a difference in a variety of fields. For example, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist and journalist, fought to protect the Everglades and raise awareness about the importance of conservation. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was a local civil rights leader who founded a school for African American girls and later served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In addition to these trailblazers, countless women in our community make a difference daily. From teachers and healthcare workers to small business owners and volunteers, women play a vital role in every aspect of our society. This month, we want to celebrate their achievements and recognize the challenges they have overcome to get to where they are today.
Check out the Exceptional Women of Broward section of this month’s magazine. We profile some of the community’s extraordinary women who are impacting the lives of people in our community daily.
Of course, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality and ensure that all women have access to the same opportunities and resources. But by acknowledging the contributions of women in our community and beyond, we can inspire future generations of girls and women to pursue their goals and dreams.
Here’s to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all!

Hollywood Historical Society Sets Sail: EXPLORE SOUTH FLORIDA ON A WATERWAYS HISTORY CRUISE THIS APRIL
Learn about the beginnings of South Florida from a different point of view when the Hollywood Historical Society takes to the water with its first-ever Waterways History Cruise.
The fundraising event, which raises money to help the HHS continue its ongoing community outreach programs, is in partnership with Leadership Hollywood Class XLVII, (a program of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce), Water Taxi, and History Fort Lauderdale. It is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 10 am to 2 pm.
Leadership Hollywood Class 47 is spearheading the planning and promotion of the tour as their community service project for the year.
“The Waterways History Cruise is the culmination of the Society’s Waterways exhibit at the Historic Hammerstein House, and gives participants a real-life experience of the places and stories highlighted in the exhibit,” said project Curator and HHS board member Andy Ruffner.
Waterways, which is running through April at the Historic Hammerstein House
at 1520 Polk Street in Hollywood, features maps, photographs, and memorabilia related to the history of Hollywood’s intricate relationship with water — the Atlantic Ocean, the marshes, the lakes, and the canals.
For the Waterways History Cruise, passengers will board the Water Taxi Fiesta at the Margaritaville/Five O’Clock Somewhere stop, for a 10 am departure. They’ll sail north on the Intracoastal Waterway to Fort Lauderdale, while engaging in a variety of activities and programs on the boat before disembarking at History Fort Lauderdale, for a tour of three historic buildings in Esplanade Park. Following the tour, participants will enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Hollywood on the Water Taxi.
“The Hollywood Historical Society is excited to offer this new opportunity, and plans to develop other cruises and tours that connect Hollywood’s history with our neighboring communities,” noted Ruffner. “This adds to our popular downtown walking tours, and bike tours of the historic districts in Central and East Hollywood and the beach, which will start up again in early March.”
▸ For more info and ticket availability, please visit www.hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org, or follow HHS on social media.
▸ The Waterways History Cruise is just a part of the Hollywood Historical Society’s agenda of activities and events supporting its mission to keep the City’s history alive for current and future generations. Pioneering a Path From the Lazy B to the Supreme Court
Agirl named Sandra was born in 1930 and grew up on a vast cattle ranch on the ArizonaNew Mexico border called the Lazy B Ranch. Growing up in a sparsely populated area meant Sandra didn’t attend a traditional school
as a young child. Her mother provided all of her early childhood education. Like her brother Allen, Sandra developed a strong work ethic at a very young age while working on the ranch.
The young girl was quite precocious. By the time she was ten, Sandra had read just about every book on the ranch. Her parents decided to send her to live with her grandmother in El Paso to attend the Radford School for Girls. Sandra’s work ethic and passion for learning helped her excel and gain admission to Standford University. The young woman graduated with honors and decided to stay at Stanford for law school. She graduated from Law School at the top of her
class in 1952.
Despite her academic achievements, Sandra faced significant barriers to employment in the legal profession solely because of her gender. Many law firms were reluctant to hire women as lawyers at the time. Her first job after law school was as a deputy county attorney in San Mateo, California, a position she obtained only after initially offering to work without pay to prove her capabilities.
After marrying a Stanford classmate, Sandra moved to Arizona, where her career took off. She worked as an assistant attorney general before pursuing politics in the Arizona state senate, where she became the first woman to hold the position
of Majority Leader in any state senate.
On July 7, 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman on the United States Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor often relied on her unique upbringing when deciding cases. Her judicial philosophy was not easily classified along the conventional conservative-liberal spectrum. She was frequently the Justice who found the moderate “middle” on many controversial issues.
Sandra Day O’Connor died in December 2023. We lost a pioneering woman who blazed a trail that so many now follow. Her ashes are buried on a peaceful hilltop at the Lazy B Ranch where she grew up.

HOLLYWOOD UPDATE
By Mayor Josh LevyHello there, Hollywood residents. . In this month’s column, I’d like to highlight a few of our public sector partners and our collective achievements in the areas of Healthcare, Education and Transportation.
In Healthcare, our stellar Memorial Healthcare System continues to make sig nificant investments to expand its capacity to serve the growing healthcare needs of our communities. Just last year, Joe Dimaggio Children's Hospital completed an expansion of four floors. And looking ahead, Memorial Regional Hospital will be presenting a project to expand its surgical suites and rooms, and concepts for future facilities will also begin to be presented following the hospital system’s recent purchase of the 8 acres primely located at the SE corner of Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 7. There is no better partner to do something iconic on that important transit-oriented corner of our city.
Memorial does a lot for our community. Last year, it’s ERs provided over 130 million dollars in uncompensated care for individuals who live in Hollywood. And just last month, Memorial kicked-off its One City at a Time Initiative, where Memorial’s pediatric and adult mobile van will travel to the areas of highest healthcare need in our city and provide free health screenings and other social services.
In Education, our K to 12 public schools have a new baseline year from which the State of Florida will measure their continuing improvement. Ten of our public schools already earned A & B grades in the baseline year, and I’d like to share too that one of those A schools, the Hollywood Academy of Arts and Science, was awarded the 2023 National Blue Ribbon Award, the highest recognition a school can receive from the U.S. Department of Education. HAAS is the first school in Broward’s history and one of 14 in Florida’s history to ever win this award.
Another special school achievement this year is by the ChaminadeMadonna high school, for its football team having won their third consecutive state football championship! Go Lions!
In Transportation & Mobility, we continue to work with Broward County, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Broward MPO to fund the renewal of Hollywood’s roadways, and making them more safe for pedestrians and bicyclists along the way. With Broward County’s Mobility Advancement Program, and its Premium Mobility Plan, we can also look forward to a countywide network of premium transit options that are aimed to improve mobility for all of us in future years.
The first element of new mobility options for us has been the community shuttles and microtransit that you’ve already seen us introduce, and the first of the PREMO options that we’ll have in Hollywood will be our very own Downtown Hollywood train station for Broward Commuter Rail, which I hope you all have heard about already. We’ve worked hard to make the train station happen, and if the regional effort goes as planned, we will see our train station built and local passenger trains connecting us with destinations up and down South Florida, initially, with FLL, Fort Lauderdale and all the train stations in Miami Dade County, all the way to downtown Miami as soon as the end of 2027.
Sincerely,
Josh Levy
