Local Businesses Need Your Support Now More than Ever
T
he past few weeks have been unprecedented. An exotic sickness from a far-off place has impacted every man, woman and child on earth. Since the onset of the COVID-19 coronavirus we have seen the best and, at times, the worst of ourselves. Here, at Our City, we prefer to focus on the good. Our community has come together in efforts to support each other in large and small ways. Things like college students shopping for senior citizens so they won’t have to leave their homes; or, restaurant owners providing meals for families in need. These are the things that make our community strong. There is one other thing we can all do to help. Local businesses have been hurt. Many have seen their revenue drop to near zero. These are our neighbors, family and friends. If you have the means, support them. Pick up a dozen bagels for breakfast, book a one-on-one physical training session or schedule your next teeth cleaning. Small, local businesses are what make communities unique. They are, in many ways, what defines the character of a place. Please do your part to ensure they make it through this crisis. We are all in this together. Stay safe! Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Hot Hollywood Glam Was the Bees Knees BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or a dozen years now, the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood has had an annual themed fundraiser. The anticipated “Hot Hollywood Glam” event always has members anxiously awaiting the grand announcement so they can plan their dress accordingly. In years past, themes such as “Bollywood” and “Hot Havana Nights” have had Hollywood’s very own city officials, center supporters, and guests walking the red carpet all glammed up for a fabulous night of art, music, and culinary delights. This year’s gala was appropriately named The Roaring 2020s. Todd Delmay, President and CEO of Delmay and Associates, Hollywood was this year’s honoree. He also serves as President of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council. The Center also recognized Frank Shaffer, General Manager of CORT Events, who has supported the “Hot Hollywood Glam” fundraiser for the last 10 years since he retired in February. “We are extremely thankful for the wonderful support we receive from
our community,” said Joy Satterlee, Executive Director, Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. “We couldn’t be happier to honor both Todd Delmay for his continuing efforts with the LGBTQ community and Hollywood in general, and Frank Shaffer who has generously supported, through CORT Events, our Hot Hollywood Glam fundraiser for all these years.” The annual bash took place at the Center where the galleries were transformed into the Gilded Age of the Roaring ‘20s. More than 150 guests enjoyed exquisite food, open bar, music, dancing, and entertainment featuring the Jenna Beth Burlesque Review and VK Dance. “The Arts played an important role in my life growing up and gave me the confidence to be myself and be a leader,” said Todd Delmay, President and CEO of Delmay and Associates. “To then be recognized by the Art and Culture Center for doing that in my adult life was a ‘full circle’ moment for me, and one made more special by the sense of community that the Center
represents for Hollywood.” Almost $17,000 was raised for the center during this amazing evening. But of course, the evening would not be possible without the many generous sponsorships. Sponsors were: The Bees Knees Sponsors: Florida Power & Light/Ben Wesley; Kofsky Weinger PA/Misty Weinger & David Kofsky; John Mabry. The Cat’s Pajamas Sponsors: Bonnie Eletz; Sue Gunzburger; Spiffy Sponsors: Bank United/Dianne Brodie; Billy’s Stone Crabs/Elena Hershey; Car Concierge/ Mark Veszi; Cindi Cossin; Popcorn Zone/Chad Simon; Julie Schecter; South Florida VoIP/Marty Jacobsen. Event Sponsors: ARC Culinary; Bob Roth’s New River Groves; CORT Events; Conceptoscar; Cupcake Burlesque; Edible Arrangements; Galleria Farms; Guinness; Motiv8 Events; Muse Rooftop Bar & Lounge Hollywood Circle Events; Paul McDermott Photography; Popcorn Zone; Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood; Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits; VK Dance; and Vizcaya Valet.

he Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) is always keeping track of the City’s history, but they are celebrating a little history of their own this month. April marks the organization’s 46th anniversary since they were established in 1974. The “HHS 2020 Luncheon” was held at Tropical Acres Steakhouse where more than 80 people were in attendance. The afternoon program began with an “Introduction of Dignitaries” by HHS President Karen Albertson. The esteemed group included Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, City Commissioners Peter Hernandez and Carol Shuham, Benefactors H. Richard Quadracci of the Windhover

Next on the agenda, HHS Board Member Stacy Adams received an award for her work to have the iconic Hollywood Sportatorium recognized as a historic site by Broward County. Local Teen Rises to Make a Change BY BEVERLY PERKINS
C
limate change receives national attention in the media practically every single day. It’s a serious concern and a hot topic, especially for our youth including Hollywood Beach native Emma Kavanaugh. The 16-year-old St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) High School student is a self-proclaimed ocean conservationist. The ambitious and dedicated teen is the founder and president of STA’s
Surfrider Foundation Club where she and fellow students attend and guide educational meetings with city officials and business owners to demonstrate the need for cutting down on disposable plastics and keeping waste off local beaches. “I wanted to start this club because I was inspired by the work others were doing, and I wanted to make a larger impact in my school and community. Ocean conservation is personally important to me because I live in South Florida. If environmental issues keep getting worse, my hometown will face rising sea levels, rising temperatures, and ocean acidification,” explained Emma. Climate change and sea-level rise is

not a topic taken lightly for Emma, especially being a South Floridian. South Florida is ground zero for climate change in the state and a recent study conducted at FAU showed that “68% of Floridians either agree or strongly agree that climate change has them concerned about the well-being of future generations in Florida.” Although Emma is a local leader in her community, she is a leader on a national level too. Her involvement, along with other like-minded young adult activists, is steering the climate movement by becoming a voice for change in the “2019 Climate Action Summit”.
Her vision in the future is that “the whole world will need to be more aware, conscious, and live in harmony with the environment. A healthy, stable climate, that’s not heavily impacted by humans and ignorance, is made possible through growing peoples’ awareness.” It’s no surprise that this stellar student is interested in Marine Biology and Wildlife Biology and very involved with the Marine Biology club at STA. Additionally, she is part of the Delta Airlines Youth Advisory Council, which helps guide the airline’s efforts to eliminate single-use plastics, among other sustainability initiatives. “I want to protect people from all over the world and future generations from the issues we have created. In order to continue to grow and thrive, we need clean oceans and a healthy planet,” added the passionate teen.

The Best Way To Fight Coronavirus? It’s In Your Hands.
T
he coronavirus pandemic has spread throughout Florida, bringing life to a standstill and overwhelming hospitals and emergency rooms across the state. Terms like “selfisolation” and “social distancing” have become part of our shared vocabulary. Think you may have COVID-19? Before you can be tested, you first need to be assessed by a healthcare professional, a simple step to determine if you might have the virus. Over the past month or so, thousands of South Floridians have swamped local doctors’ offices, hospitals and emergency rooms in an effort to get tested, straining already over-taxed facilities, resources and staff. If there is a silver lining to this public health crisis, it’s that it has shined a spotlight on the critical role telemedicine plays in healthcare, particularly in battling the COVID-19 crisis. Telemedicine services such as Baptist Health Care On Demand enable you to consult with a trained healthcare professional from the comfort of your home via your smartphone, laptop or computer. “In a public health crisis such as this, it’s very important that patients are advised properly,”
explains David Mishkin, M.D., medical director of Baptist Health Care On Demand. “Care On Demand is really the first ‘front door’ potentially for many patients regarding this illness and we have specific protocols when a patient does meet (COVID-19) criteria for an in-person evaluation.” Using digital health tools such as Care On Demand as part of a front-line response to the COVID-19 virus pandemic helps ensure that scarce hospital resources are reserved for the sickest patients, including those who need care for conditions not related to the epidemic. Javier Pérez-Fernández, M.D., pulmonologist and critical care director at Baptist Hospital of Miami, says keeping emergency rooms available for those who are seriously ill has been a major concern for Baptist and hospitals throughout the world. “Unless you’re sick, hospitals and emergency rooms are not the place you want to be right now,” says Dr. Pérez-Fernández. “Also, do you really want to be exposing yourself to this virus unnecessarily?” Following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Baptist Health South Florida has been encouraging people
with symptoms similar to those of COVID-19 to stay home and see a doctor via Care On Demand. Baptist Health’s online healthcare providers can answer any questions, evaluate your risk, and provide support to relieve symptoms. Most cases of COVID-19 involve mild symptoms, including fever and a dry cough, that can be hometreated without medical intervention. Some patients develop pneumonia, which is a condition that can fill lungs with fluid, potentially causing difficulty breathing in some patients. “If you’re experiencing shortness of breath in addition to other symptoms such as fever, cough and general malaise, then you should visit Care On Demand to see if you should be tested for the disease,” Dr. Pérez-Fernández says.

Quarantine Binge Watch Nurse Jackie - Showtime/Netflix (seven seasons) Nurse Jackie is a medical drama-comedy that tells the story of Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco), an Emergency Room nurse at a hospital in New York City. Every day is a “high wire act” for Jackie as she juggles patients, doctors, fellow nurses, and her own drug addiction. Falco’s portrayal of Jackie, as a strong-willed, iconoclastic New York City nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life, is phenomenal.

B
oredom and stress have become constant challenges as we stay at home in self-quarantine from coronavirus. One way to overcome both is to get lost in a TV series. Luckily, there is no shortage of compelling TV available. With so many options to choose from, we polled our staff for their favorites.
The Mandalorian - Disney Plus (one season) The Mandalorian is the break-out star of Disney’s streaming service. The 10 episode drama is set in the Star Wars universe after the fall of the Empire. The classic “space western” follows bounty hunter Din Djarin from one adventure to another. His discovery of “The Child,” better known in popular culture as Baby Yoda, made our family fall in love with the quick moving series. Stranger Things - Netflix (three seasons) Set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, Stranger Things focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town, including the appearance of a girl with psychokinetic abilities. It follows the boy’s friends, Mike, Dustin and Lucas as they uncover mysteries surrounding their friend’s disappearance.
Breaking Bad In what many people call the greatest television series yet made, high school chemistry teacher Walter White transforms into the Southwest’s biggest drug lord after learning he has incurable cancer. The pace of the show and incredible writing make it easy to pass hours on end.
Shameless, courtesy of Showtime
Shameless - Showtime/Netflix (nine seasons) Set in the slums of Chicago’s South Side, Shameless follows the Gallagher family as they navigate life on the edge. The family is led by William H. Macy’s ,Frank Gallagher, a dysfunctional alcoholic who is hilariously self-destructive. What makes the show work is the cast’s ability to make you love the characters despite their sometimes reprehensible behavior.

What to do if you are sick with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) If you are sick with COVID-19 or suspect you are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, follow the steps below to help prevent the disease from spreading to people in your home and community.
Stay home except to get medical care
Clean your hands often
You should restrict activities outside your home, except for getting medical care. Do not go to work, school, or public areas. Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. Soap and water should be used preferentially if hands are visibly dirty. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home People: As much as possible, you should stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. Animals: Do not handle pets or other animals while sick. See COVID-19 and Animals for more information.
Call ahead before visiting your doctor If you have a medical appointment, call the healthcare provider and tell them that you have or may have COVID-19. This will help the healthcare provider’s office take steps to keep other people from getting infected or exposed.
Wear a facemask You should wear a facemask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) or pets and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a facemask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then people who live with you should not stay in the same room with you, or they should wear a facemask if they enter your room.
Cover your coughs and sneezes Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw used tissues in a lined trash can; immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60-95% alcohol covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. Soap and water should be used preferentially if hands are visibly dirty.
Avoid sharing personal household items You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, or bedding with other people or pets in your home. After using these items, they should be washed thoroughly with soap and water.
Clean all “high-touch” surfaces every day High touch surfaces include counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables. Also, clean any surfaces that may have blood, stool, or body fluids on them. Use a household cleaning spray or wipe, according to the label instructions. Labels contain instructions for safe and effective use of the cleaning product including precautions you should take when applying the product, such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation during use of the product.
Monitor your symptoms Seek prompt medical attention if your illness is worsening (e.g., difficulty breathing). Before seeking care, call your healthcare provider and tell them that you have, or are being evaluated for, COVID-19. Put on a facemask before you enter the facility. These steps will help the healthcare provider’s office to keep other people in the office or waiting room from getting infected or exposed. Ask your healthcare provider to call the local or state health department. Persons who are placed under active monitoring or facilitated self-monitoring should follow instructions provided by their local health department or occupational health professionals, as appropriate. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the dispatch personnel that you have, or are being evaluated for COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before emergency medical services arrive.
Discontinuing home isolation Patients with confirmed COVID-19 should remain under home isolation precautions until the risk of secondary transmission to others is thought to be low. The decision to discontinue home isolation precautions should be made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with healthcare providers and state and local health departments.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
More Improvements Are Underway in Hollywood! BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY e are excited to see several improvements helping to shape our City’s future, making Hollywood a better place to live, work and play. I am happy to update the community on several projects and initiatives underway in our City. Hollywood Boulevard Complete Streets We are excited to announce that Phase One of the Hollywood Boulevard Complete Streets Improvement Project has recently been completed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the City. Following demolition, crews installed a new underground drainage system, streetlights, pavement, pedestrian walks, parking configuration, mid-block crossings, mast arms and center medians. The project has now been handed over to the City for implementation of Phase Two, which is comprised of landscaping and irrigation. The project is on schedule for completion this Spring. Home Makeover Reveal Our first “Home Makeover Reveal” of the year was recently held at the home of longtime Hollywood resident Juliet McGriff. Thanks to the City, Broward County and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Interlocal Agreement, funds were made available through the Neighborhood Pride Program to replace the roof, soffit, and fascia, paint the exterior, provide security lighting, and replace the driveway and fence. The City was able to pair the County Contribution Financing with State Housing Initiatives Partnership program funds, made available by the Florida Housing Finance Corporation to assist Ms. McGriff with additional repairs to her plumbing and electric, and to replace her HVAC system. For those interested in the Neighborhood Pride Program, please visit http://www. hollywoodfl.org/1…/Neighborhood-Pride-Program-ILA Hollywood On the Go and Other Capital Improvement Projects Polk Street Public Boat Ramps The City is investing in resiliency improvements to reconstruct the City’s public boat ramp launching area on Polk Street to help address rising tides. Resiliency Improvements to include: ▸ Raising the ramp elevation ▸ Construction of a storm water retaining area ▸ Relocation of the driveways ▸ Reconstruction and raising of the ramp lot ▸ New Gated entry ▸ New Lighting ▸ Installation of sidewalks & curbing ▸ New landscaping Park Improvements Design and Construction Management (DCM) also has a number of improvement projects underway to enhance the experience and usability of the City’s public parks. North Beach Utilities Conversion The North Beach Utilities Conversion Project is to harden the utilities on the Barrier Island in the North Beach area just outside the Community Redevelopment District. The project’s scope includes undergrounding of utilities, road resurfacing and pavement restoration, and new streetlights. Tidal Flooding Mitigation and Seawalls Evaluation of the 13 respondents to the Request for Qualifications for the Tidal Flood Mitigation and Seawall General Obligation Bond Projects is currently underway. The scope of work will include Tidal Flooding alternative solutions, including, but not limited to, public seawalls and City-owned property around North Lake and South Lake. MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Interaction with People Experiencing Homelessness BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM eople who experience homelessness are often engaged in prohibited conduct which includes being intoxicated, loitering, prowling, fighting, trespassing, aggressive panhandling, soliciting, urinating/defecating, consuming alcoholic beverages in certain public places, camping or sleeping in parks, littering, obstructing sidewalks, disturbing the peace by loud and unreasonable noise, using offensive words, behaving in a threatening manner and more. Therefore, homelessness is an extremely complex social problem that can impact the quality of life in a community. While being homeless is not a crime, the disorderly issues associated with homelessness are criminal in nature. Because many of the crimes involving people experiencing homelessness are misdemeanors, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) and elected officials of the City of North Miami Beach (City) have to strike the right balance between homelessness as a social issue and a criminal issue. As a result, the City and the NMBPD joins forces with the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust to assist this community’s most vulnerable subpopulation. For instance, the City installed a homeless meter in front of City Hall to collect donations. We work together to direct individuals in need of resources and services. When interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness, the officers of the NMBPD resort to criminal sanctions or the threat of criminal sanctions only as a last resort and only where there is a genuine threat to public safety. Many people experiencing homelessness are on the streets because of substance abuse and/or mental illness. Consequently, we advise any residents if there is someone on your porch or otherwise threatening you, shut your door and call the NMBPD. The following tips will help you avoid problems with people experiencing homelessness: ▸ Avoid confrontations and maintain distance ▸ Do not offer food or money. It may encourage more panhandling. If you are inclined to help the homeless, it is better to contribute to local charities, missions, food banks or social service organizations that assist the needy ▸ Do not permit anyone to camp or loiter on your property ▸ Do not allow anyone to store shopping carts, bedding or other personal belongings on your property ▸ Restrict access to sidewalk overhangs, or other areas protected from inclement weather ▸ Lock or remove handles from water spigots ▸ Keep dumpsters locked when not being filled or emptied ▸ Secured outside storage sheds or containers ▸ Lock or turn off exterior power outlets ▸ Lock gates after hours ▸ Install motion-activated lighting after hours ▸ Trim landscaping to eliminate hiding places ▸ Keep property free of trash, litter, junk, etc. ▸ Establish posts and enforce rules of conduct for public use of private property. Include signs of prohibitions of loitering, illegal lodging, drinking alcoholic beverages and drug activities ▸ Install surveillance cameras to cover public areas. Have security personnel monitor these cameras and ask persons engaged in prohibited conduct to leave the property. Security personnel should also patrol the property at random times.

Pet of the
Month
“MAGGIE”” “MAGGIE
We rescued our little tuxedo kitten Maggie in Hollywood Lowe’s parking lot during a downpour. She is now about 7 months old. Spayed and healthy. She is just one of so many strays in need of a home. Maggie is able to jump higher than any cat I’ve ever seen, catching her favorite toy mouse in mid air! No wonder it took hours to catch HER! She was last seen putting all her toy mice in her water bowl... trying to drown them? We love her and her white heart.
