Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever

T

he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

KC Has Been Shaking his Booty Since 1973, and is Still Shaking It…and That’s The Way We Like It!

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

arry Wayne Casey, better known as KC, the founder and leader of KC and The Sunshine Band, is a true musical icon of many generations. His career started right here in South Florida, in his hometown of Hialeah back in 1973. For over four decades, KC and the Sunshine Band has been entertaining audiences all around the world, and they are coming back home for a performance at Hollywood’s Hard Rock Live on May 12th at 8:00pm. Casey was influenced mainly by Motown, and iconic singers Joe Cocker and James Brown, as well as the legendary rock band, Chicago. His family was also an inspiration as his mother played gospel records and his siblings made commercials. Surrounded by

music, dance and song, he never thought of doing anything else. The American band’s musical style included disco and funk. Their best-known songs include the hits “That’s the Way (I Like It)”, “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty”, “I’m Your Boogie Man”, “Keep It Comin’ Love”, “Get Down Tonight”, “Boogie Shoes”, “Please Don’t Go” and “Give It Up”. When asked what his favorite song is, KC responds by saying, “Who’s your favorite child? You can’t choose just one.” The South Florida teen went from working in a record store to selling out concerts, having his music in more than 200 motion picture film soundtracks in addition to every major sporting event in the world, famous parades, political conventions, and presidential campaigns, not to mention wedding and bar/bat mitzvah playlists. The talented modern pop singer and song writer also received nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards, People’s Choice Awards, an

American Music Award, and coveted stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Palm Springs Walk of Stars. The “Founder of the Dance Revolution” put Miami on the map with his “feel good happy” infectious tunes. However, Casey stayed unaffected by his “heartthrob” status as his posters adorned the bedrooms of teenage girls. His focus was purely on making music. His time and energy went into projects. He worked hard to create his niche in the extremely competitive industry. His family also helped keep him grounded, and he protected and isolated himself from the media at that time. In 1984, Casey decided to retire from all the politics that the music business presented. Fast forward ten years, and Arsenio Hall asked him to come on his popular show with his band to perform the classic tunes. Luckily, he agreed and put the band together. It was then when realized that he had given up something he loved. After testing the waters a bit, he saw that the fans were still supporting him, and now he has been performing all over again. “I’m doing what I love to do!” said KC. “It’s my career, my job. It’s what the universe planned for me.” KC is excited about his upcoming performance at Hard Rock Live since he gets to come back to his hometown. “It will be a fun night to relive old memories and create new ones.” said KC. “It is a rewarding moment to connect with the public as they sing-a-long and dance with me. I feel the vibration.” KC and The Sunshine Band will perform on May 12, 2017 at Hard Rock Live, 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood at 8:00pm. Tickets cost $70, $59, and $50. All seats are reserved and available at all Ticketmaster outlets online at www.myhrl.com, www.ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone: 1-800-7453000. Doors open one hour prior to show start time. *Additional fees may apply.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Surf’s Up at the 2nd Annual East Coast Ocean Surfski Championship & SUP Cup Race BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

ver one hundred race participants are Michele Eray and Maggie Hogan expected at this year’s East Coast Ocean Surfski Championship & SUP Cup Race. The South Florida Surfcraft Challenge, located in Hollywood, has recently acquired the East Coast Paddleboard Association & Championship Race which has been producing the largest paddleboard races along the East Coast for the past 19 years. The second annual fundraising event will benefit the Hollywood Beach Lifeguard Competition Teams (both adult and junior divisions). The race will be held at 8:00am on Saturday, May 20th at Harry Berry Park, 301 Azalea Terrace on Hollywood Beach. The 5, 6, 12, and 24 mile ocean races are for Stand-Up & Prone Paddleboards, Surfskis, Outrigger Canoes and Surf Boats. The 5 mile course is for stand-up paddle boards (SUP) only, and designed for beginner to intermediate paddlers. Those with more experience may compete in the 6 or 12 mile races which are open to all crafts. The 24 mile distance is for Outrigger Canoes only. The goal of the anticipated event is to support, and raise funds and awareness for the Hollywood Beach Adult & Junior Lifeguard Competition Teams. Not many realize that the Hollywood Beach Safety division patrols five miles of paddlefriendly shoreline seven days a week, every day of the year to ensure the safety and enjoyment of paddle boarders, kayakers and beach-goers. Funds raised will be used to purchase necessary training equipment, assist in paying for equipment transportation to regional & national competitions, and

help provide specialized training workshops with professional coaches throughout the year. Having proper equipment and professional training allow the Hollywood Beach Competition Teams to introduce local youth, as young as eight years of age, to competitive watersports, beach water safety, and team building experiences. Each year, the Hollywood Beach Lifeguard Competition team members, compete in the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) local, Regional, and National competition events. These yearly events are host to hundreds of lifesaving professionals and junior lifeguards from all over the country. The Hollywood teams will be competing at the annual Regional event in Delray Beach, FL in July and will travel to the USLA National event in Daytona, FL in August. Several manufacturers and experts will be on the beach offering demonstrations and basic instruction along with event sponsors who will be showcasing their products. Friends, family members and beach-goers will be able to cheer on the racers since the courses are visible from Hollywood Beach. Also at this year’s event, two Olympic World Champion Surfski athletes, Michele Eray and Maggie Hogan, of Paddle California will be attending and offering several training workshops. For donations, sponsorship or vendor information, please contact the Race Directors at HollywoodJrLifeguards@gmail.com or by calling (954) 655-6956.

S

tudents from Beachside Montessori Village (BMV) will showcase their art work at the “7th Annual Off the Canvas Live!” event at their school on May 12th from 5:30-8:00pm. The eagerly anticipated event will include the creations of 550 students from Pre-K through the eighth grade. The program will highlight what students have learned about nontraditional arts. Stamped Ceremonial Fabrics, Origami Crane Curtains, Upcycled Cardboard Sculptural Houses and hand-created Book Bindings are just a few of the magnificent pieces of artwork to be exhibited by the students at Beachside Montessori Village who created them. “Art is all around us, from the clothes you wear, to the building you stand in, to the dish you eat from,” says local artist and curator Alissa Alfonso. “The importance of learning to appreciate art early in life is often overlooked and undervalued. It encourages exploration, selfexpression, logical thinking, self-esteem, individuality, imagination and creativity. Art teaches children to think openly, create new meaning, be more tolerant of uniqueness, and gives them the self-confidence to take risks.” In addition to exhibiting the projects students have created throughout the year, Off the Canvas Live! will also include handson arts and crafts for all ages from Nature Inspired Art Installations to a science/art merge of creating SLIME. Other featured events throughout the evening will include Interactive Initiative, a non-profit focused on facilitating intuitive and creative forms contemporary interactives. L.Mercado Studio, a local Hollywood

Ceramics Studio, will demonstrate and instruct how to use clay on pottery wheels for a hands-on experience. Flash Art & Video Installations will roam the halls giving impromptu performances. There will also be a Cardboard Challenge demonstrating how creating art using recycled and re-used materials is an important way to be better citizens of the earth, which is an important theme of the Off the Canvas program. Off the Canvas Live! will be open to all BMV families as well as all media and fellow school administrators. Non-BMV families and other appreciators of art may enjoy selected student artwork at the Hollywood Art & Cultural Center from May 16th through June 1st. 7th Annual Off the Canvas LIVE! will be held on May 12, 2017, from 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Beachside Montessori Village located at 2230 Lincoln Street in Hollywood.

McArthur Students Compete in Their Own ‘Top Chef’ Competition

SCHOOL NEWS

T

he television show “Top Chef” was the inspiration behind McArthur High School Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, Eileen Santiago’s school competition. Santiago created “Hollywood’s Top Chef” project at Hollywood Park Elementary a couple of years ago after being awarded a grant from the Broward Education Foundation and the City of Hollywood. The program was such a success that she was able to take on a disseminator role at the Teacher Expo, where she presented her idea to more than 400 teachers. She was given the capability to award more than 15 teachers with a $400 grant allowing them to adapt this project to fit their classroom needs. Fortunately, she was able to have her new students at McArthur High participate in their own “Top Chef” competition just last month. Anyone familiar with the show knows that aspiring chefs create culinary creations competing for the “Top Chef” title along with the stardom that goes along with it. Santiago always likes to provide real-world experiences for her students. Her goal as an educator is to teach math, reading, science, social studies and social skills beyond the classroom. Over the last few months, Santiago and her students visited various restaurants to get ready for the competition. Her class also had the opportunity to visit the students in the culinary program at Sheridan Tech to experience how a commercial kitchen operates. Students were able to knead dough and construct boxes at Tony the Pizza Chef II, taste test different hot dog sauces at Que Perros, taste smoothies and shakes at Froots, and learn how to make a burger at Ends Meat. “Seeing the fire on the grill was a great experience for the students. They enjoyed eating burgers, fries and octopus,” said Santiago. “This was Ends Meat

first year participating in the event. Kevin, the owner, was so excited about this event that he recruited HipPops, the gourmet dessert food truck, to be part of it. Although they were unable to attend, they donated chocolate covered gelato bars for all the students to enjoy.” Yuliana Lang from The Art of Toast heard about the event and wanted to be a part of it. The students were not able to visit her business because her location is at Yellow Green Farmers Market which is closed during the week. However, she made videos for the students so they could watch the art in making toast. She also made muddled strawberry toast for their big day. The event was hosted by Mr. Cain, Testing Coordinator at McArthur High and Laurel Belfon, student intern from Broward College Teacher Education Program. Judges were Josh Levy, Mayor of Hollywood, Dr. Elizabeth Carrandi, Associate Dean of the Teacher Education Program at Broward College, and Coco Burns, Program Director at Broward Education Foundation.

T

he old adage “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to your skin. Patients are often unaware of the fact that the skin is the largest organ in the body. As such, we need to make appropriate dietary choices to enhance the appearance of our skin. The same way we choose heart-healthy foods and liver cleansing diets. It has been shown that midlife women with the most youthful looking skin also have the most Vitamin C in their diets. Vitamin C is essential for the cross-linking, or building of collagen, the support structure that keeps your skin’s surface smooth. Young-looking women also tend to eat less saturated fat and fewer carbohydrates, and have higher levels of linoleic acid, an Omega-6 fatty acid found mainly in nuts and dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale. Ellagic acid, found primarily in pomegranates and red berries, is another wrinkle-fighter. This compound has also been known to reduce inflammation from sun damage exposure and reduces collagen breakdown. Other foods that have been shown to improve the appearance of the skin include salmon, particularly the wild caught variety like King, Sockeye, and Coho Salmon, often seasonably available. I would discourage one from eating the farm-raised variety, as the mercury levels may be high unless it comes from an organic fishery. Salmon not only contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids beneficial to your skin and heart, but also astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity. Green tea provides anti-aging plant polyphenols that may help your skin when you drink it and apply it topically. Egg yolks, avocados, lentils, chickpeas and beans (including soybeans) all fight dryness in the skin. Other antioxidants, such as goji berries and acai berries found in juices and supplements, enable your body to fight inflammation causing free radicals which are generated as a result of sun damage. In addition to the foods I have mentioned, plant sterols are beneficial not only to your skin, but also help lower LDL cholesterol. Sterols are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. These substances limit your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food. Plastic surgery can dramatically enhance the appearance of your skin through laser or chemical resurfacing, skin excision or injectable therapy, but to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, consuming essential nutrients through your diet may be just as beneficial over the long term. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. ASK THE EXPERT

R

heumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including: sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tend to affect your smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as diseasemodifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated.

“Reagan ‘Ronnie’ Marante”

30

BY JOSH LEVY, CITY OF HOLLYWOOD MAYOR

T

hank you to Our City Hollywood magazine for giving me this space to highlight some of the initiatives that we are working on in Hollywood. The spring season marks the start of our budget planning period for the upcoming 20172018 fiscal year. So there will be lots of numbercrunching going on to ensure that our city government continues to deliver top-quality city services within the revenue parameters that our budget directors anticipate. At this time of year, there is also lots going on in Tallahassee. The Florida Legislature is in session till May 5th, and our City is busy advocating for state funding of the Port Everglades sand-by-pass project, beach renourishment dollars, septic-to-sewer conversion dollars, maintaining funding levels for some senior services, and more. We are also opposing bills that are looking to strip cities of the right to regulate business activities within our boundaries, including short-term rental and party-house businesses that are impacting our single family neighborhoods. There is a lot that our staff, elected officials and Tallahassee lobbying team is monitoring and working on, and we will keep you informed about what happens. On the local level, I’ve of course been working on a variety of fixes and opportunities for our city. Myself and city staff met with the CEO of WastePro, our garbage collection vendor, and obtained a commitment from WastePro to improve the level of service that they have been providing to the city. Since the meeting, I can already see an improvement, so we’re off to a good start. We are also making progress in streamlining our building permit process. The Building Department needs to be given more resources. It needs to be fast and efficient for homeowner and commercial building permits alike. Hollywood’s renaissance depends on it. Look for more improvements in this area in the year ahead. We need to take bold steps. Finally, I’d like to take a minute to highlight Parkside, the charming neighborhood located just south of Downtown Hollywood, and downtown itself. We have a great opportunity to turn Parkside into an arts village, to compliment the art and culture scene that continues to grow downtown. There is a lot of buzz going on downtown, with new restaurants and new residential projects under construction or in the planning stages. A new Publix is anticipated to open by the end of the year as well, as part of the Hollywood Circle project that just topped-off at the northeast section of the Young Circle. Besides new shops, restaurants, housing and bringing more cultural and music events to the ArtsPark, I am actively working on attracting a large university or college(s) to join Barry University downtown. Downtown Hollywood can really flourish as an urban student village unlike no other in South Florida. If you have contacts in higher education, let them know that we are looking! The lifestyle opportunities that our city offers are endless. Whether it’s the beach, downtown, or our established residential neighborhoods or business districts east to west, there is lots to celebrate and lots to freshen-up. I am excited about all that we are on the way to doing to continuously improve our city and I wish everyone a very happy spring season. Josh Levy, Mayor

FPL Volunteers Beautify Hollywood Beach BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

PL recently had their 9th annual “Power to Care” event. The initiative involved employees, their families, friends and the local community. More than 1,600 volunteers participated in 30 “Power to Care” projects in 12 counties in Florida within one week. One of these projects hosted by FPL was a community event in Hollywood. Over 50 local volunteers and their families spent the day beautifying Hollywood Beach to benefit the South Florida Audubon Society whose mission aims to foster conservation through local, regional, national, and global environmental advocacy and activities throughout South Florida focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats, for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. Over the past 100 years, humans have altered the already fragile South Florida coastline. It’s been damaged to the extent that the natural system barely exists today. South Florida, especially the Hollywood area, has been considered ground zero for the earliest signs of sea level rise. As their “Power to Care” project, these outstanding volunteers were helping to restore dunes along Hollywood Beach by removing invasive plants and planting a few thousand sea oat seedlings. The day of service also benefited the Youth Environmental Alliance, a local nonprofit in Broward County that has been instrumental in providing all-inclusive

educational programs that focus on Florida’s unique ecosystems and wildlife. Each program they host highlights the importance of outdoor ethics, safety, and environmental stewardship, while providing a fun learning atmosphere, including programming that extend to at risk youth and people with special needs. “At FPL, we work closely with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to work and raise a family. Our Annual Power to Care Week is one way we do that. During the week more than 1,600 FPL volunteers – employees, their friends and families – volunteered at 30 community projects throughout the state,” said Pam Rauch, vice president of external affairs and economic development at Florida Power & Light Company. “In addition to partnering with the South Florida Audubon Society, many of the FPL volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean beaches, spruce up community parks, paint and improve homes and help support youth programs.” The week of service projects across FPL’s service area is one way that FPL is working with the communities it serves to make Florida an even better place to work and raise a family. The South Florida Audubon Society is on a mission to do hands-on activities and to teach citizen volunteers the importance of saving South Florida’s prime economic vehicle, the beaches, by providing outreach education programs. To learn more about the South Florida Audubon Society, please visit www.browardaudubon.org.
