igh schools and colleges across the area are holding graduation ceremonies this month. Young people, from every background, are celebrating these milestones and looking forward to the next phase of their lives. Graduation often marks a “watershed moment” in a person’s life. Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the twelfth century. The hood, gown, and mortarboard cap that we associate with graduation today are derived, in part, from what people wore back in those days. It’s important that we continue to recognize this step in a person’s life today. In some ways, graduating from high school is a more monumental moment in a young person’s life today than ever before. Decisions on what to do next, whether it is attending college, pursuing a trade or joining the military are often the first major decision a person makes on behalf of themselves in their lives. Voters to Decide on Broward County Schools Funding Increase in August By Our City Staff
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is presenting voters with a referendum that will appear on the August 23, 2022, primary election ballot. “The Secure the Next Generation” referendum would increase property owner’s contribution by 0.50 millage points from current levels. A millage rate refers to the amount of property tax paid based on the assessed value of a piece of real estate. One mill is equal to 1/1,000. For example, a 1 mill tax on a $100,000 property would yield a net tax of $100. The school district says it will use funds to recruit and retain high-quality teachers and eligible staff by increasing compensation, providing additional school resource officers and school safety staff, and, enhancing essential programs, such as mental health services. The current ½ mill assessment will expire next year if the proposal is not approved by
voters in August. “If the referendum doesn’t pass, we would have zero, which means our teachers would not receive any of the supplements that they receive now,” said Broward School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. If the proposal passes it will generate about $177 million annually, which represents more than 5% of the district’s total annual expenditures. The majority of the funds will be used to attract and retain teachers by augmenting salaries. In addition to BCPS, Charter Schools are set to receive $45 million in funds. “The counties on both sides of us are actually recruiting some of our top talent from Broward County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Vicki Cartwright. Broward County spends about $12,000 per student per year. The county’s expenditures are slightly higher than the state of Florida overall, but lag neighboring Miami
Dade and Palm Beach Counties. According to BCPS the average Broward homeowner would see a tax increase of about $23 per month following the adoption of the proposal.

Attucks Middle School teacher Marilyn O’Brien headed to school expecting just another day inspiring and teaching our community’s next generation. Little did she know that she would be driving home in a brand new car. s the 2022 storm season approaches Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) plans to upgrade the energy grid in Hollywood in 2022 to enhance day-to-day reliability for customers and improve resiliency in the face of severe weather. Strengthening power poles, maintaining trees and vegetation near power lines, installing smart grid technology, regularly inspecting equipment, and undergrounding neighborhood power lines in targeted areas have helped improve service reliability by 45% for FPL customers over the past decade. “We understand how much our customers depend on the critical service we provide. That’s why our team works tirelessly to continuously improve the energy grid across our service area – from Miami to Pensacola,” said Eric Silagy, chairman and CEO of FPL. “We know that in Florida it’s not a matter of if, but when, the next storm will impact our state. Our disciplined infrastructure and technology investments are improving day-to-day service for customers and helping us speed restoration after a storm.”

usiness owners must wear many hats; marketing and sales, production, client satisfaction, tax payments, etc. The list is endless. One aspect that almost never gets addressed, until it is too late, is Business Succession Planning.
What is Business Succession Planning?
Very simply it is a written plan for what happens to your business when you pass away, It is very much akin to the Estate Plan that you hopefully created for your assets to pass to your family (if you have not then please give us a call!!). There are also certain triggering events that could have an impact with a proper Business Succession Plan in place. Those events could be an outside offer to purchase the business, one of the partners deciding to leave the business, or even a divorce of one of the partners and the ex spouse gets the partner’s share of the company!! That could lead to a very dramatic situation if not properly planned for.

Elements of the well drafted Business Succession Plan
There are several key elements of a well drafted Business Succession Plan. The top three most critical are naming successors, method for business valuation, and finally proper funding for the business succession plan. Obviously, the business needs to get passed to someone. That could be a family member such as a son or daughter, or even sold to a partner or to a third party. That needs to be spelled out explicitly in the Business Succession Plan. The second step is to arrive at a fair valuation of the business. We actually build in the formula into our Business Succession Plans so as to minimize future fights between the parties. Lastly, a funding mechanism such as life insurance needs to be in place so that the “buyer”, if a family member or a partner, has the funds available to buy out the business. This aspect is often overlooked by the business owners. Don’t fall into this trap.

TWO BEACONS OF THE COMMUNITY By Mayor Josh Levy
Dear Fellow Hollywood Residents, In this month’s column, I’d like to remember two great community members whose character and life passions leave us with a legacy to emulate. They will be sorely missed.
BARRY FASKE – A student of faith who loved nature, Barry was a true mensch. Anyone who got to meet Barry Faske surely recognized they were in the company of a genuine person, a caring thinker who sought to do good for our community and our natural environment. Barry was a second-generation native Floridian whose family emigrated from Romania to Florida in the late 1800s. In 2015, Barry was appointed by the Broward County Commission to its Climate Change Task Force where he was one of 26 members who authored the 2015 update to the Broward Climate Change Action Plan. Barry proudly served as President of the Florida Green Building Coalition and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, chairing Leadership Hollywood’s Environmental Day for eight years. For many years, Barry also selflessly gave of his time as a member of the City of Hollywood’s Green Team Advisory Committee and Dune Master Plan Taskforce. The City of Hollywood extends our deepest condolences to Barry’s family, his fellow congregants at Temple Sinai, his friends and loved ones.
DANIEL PONTET – A gifted artist, beloved friend and devoted father.
Daniel Pontet was an award-winning multimedia fine artist who painted illustrations, caricatures and images covering a broad spectrum of subjects and ideas. Born in Uruguay with Italian roots, Daniel moved to South Florida 30 years ago. While Daniel’s art was exhibited at more than 100 art shows, he also gave so much back to our community, sharing the joy, feeling and creation of expressive art for many years as a staple of the monthly Downtown Hollywood Artwalk and through Daniel’s volunteerism at the Hollywood Academy of Arts & Sciences Charter School where his daughters went to school. We will miss Daniel’s free spirit dearly and leave you with Daniel’s “3 Rules in life, ‘always’: Rule #1: BE HAPPY... Rule #2: BE HEALTHY... Rule #3: HAVE FUN...and there is a last rule... Rule #4: you could create your own rules too!”
