HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!

S

ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity, and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average nine inches of rain each month.

Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums, and art galleries, for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bridge exhibits at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science. Adults and older teens can learn more about history’s darkest moment at The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and engaging indoor options South Florida has to offer.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Hollywood Takes Pride By Beverly Perkins

J

ust last month the world celebrated Pride Month. The symbolic month encourages the world’s LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) communities to come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. These gatherings are to empower and give a voice to those that have struggled to overcome prejudice. Pride events are created to embrace everyone who feels like their sexual identity falls outside the mainstream and inspire straight people to support and join too. Without hesitation, The City of Hollywood showed their support and acceptance. Mayor Josh Levy along with Hollywood Commissioners joined members of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council by raising a special flag at City Hall. “We are here to celebrate Pride Month here in the City of Hollywood and speaking for myself and on behalf of the City

Commission, we celebrate all the diversity of our City. Whether it’s race, ethnic background, national origin, religion, or sexual orientation we are here to celebrate what makes us a City,” proudly stated Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. In addition to remarks by Mayor Levy and Council President Todd Delmay, singer/ songwriter, and Season 3 “The Voice” contestant, Joselyn Rivera, performed “Over the Rainbow” A cappella as the flag was raised. “The idea of having a Pride Flag fly in Hollywood was something wonderful. Hollywood was the first City in Florida to fly this particular pride flag and what I love about that is Hollywood is showing that it can be a leader on these issues. It can be the City that shows everyone else what it means to be an open, diverse and wel-

coming community,” exclaimed Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council President Todd Delmay. The Progress Pride flag, donated by the Council, flew proudly over Hollywood City Hall during June as a symbol of the open and diverse community that is Hollywood. The Progress Pride flag featured the traditional rainbow colors, but also included a chevron with black and brown to represent queer people of color, and pink, blue, and white to represent those of trans and/or non-binary experience. “While the Pride Flag in any form is a celebration of every color and shade of the human experience, it is not yet a celebration of full equality. Rather, it is also a reminder that we are still called to work together until everyone is equal,” added Delmay.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The 2021 National Merit Scholarship program began in October 2019 when more than 1.5 million juniors took the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the preliminary screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists. About 15,000 students met the high academic standards and other requirements needed to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. The Scholars were evaluated based on academic record, including the difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized exams, and contributions and leadership in school and community activities. Students also had to submit an essay and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official.

Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center Redevelopment Inches Closer By Terry Jaillet

O

ne of the best remaining buildable spots on Hollywood Beach is a bit closer to being redeveloped. Miami-based developer, The Related Group presented a proposed master plan to redevelop the land currently occupied by the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center to Hollywood’s City Commission. The city chose to market the property, located at 1301 S. Ocean Drive, for redevelopment in February of 2020 and received interest from a number of national and international developers. After a long process, the city chose to negotiate directly with The Related Group. City Staff, real estate advisory consultants and CBRE are expected to present a term sheet to the City Commission in August for approval. The term sheet will lay out the general terms for the expected development, while a comprehensive agreement will be presented to the City Commission for approval in early fall. The development plans will go before the Planning and Development Board and City Commission for final approvals. Related’s proposal includes a number of what they refer to as “public facilities,” including the replacement and modernization of the Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center, new sheltered parking, a new restaurants retention of the public park, boardwalk extension & renovation, and restoration of the dunes. The “private” portion of the project will be a 300-unit apartment complex. The Hollywood Arts Site Community Center will be 20,000 square feet and split between two levels large enough to support the growing

population of the City of Hollywood. The Public Facilities will also include a 5,000-square-foot restaurant space (to be leased by Related and operated by a first-class restauranteur) occupying a ground-level portion of the breathtaking building. The City will have the ability to rent out beachfront space associated with the Project for additional dining, events, and more. The building will comply with the requirements for Florida Green Building Coalition Certification.

FORMER STATE TROOPER

Serving Hollywood the Flavor!

oan Champion served in The Florida Highway Patrol as a State Trooper and a State Fire Marshall Detective. After 26 years of service, she decided to retire but still wanted to serve the community. After exploring several different opportunities for the next chapter in her life, Joan realized that food is a great way to stay connected with the community. She now owns a multi-unit Wingstop franchise. Wingstop is the destination for people who crave fresh, flavorful wings, hand-cut seasoned fries, and an assortment of tasty sides. For people who demand flavor in everything they do, Wingstop is the place to go; it’s more than a meal; it’s a flavor experience. The chain began in 1994 as a small, buffalo-style chicken wing restaurant in Garland, Texas. It has grown to become a

global standard for fresh food and outstanding customer service. We sat down with Joan to learn more.

Tell us about Wingstop!

Wingstop is a quick-service restaurant that serves fresh, never-frozen wings, hand-cut seasoned fries, and other delicious sides. My team is unique in that we deliver quality food and service done to the Champion Standard.

Sounds fantastic! What makes Wingstop different from other places that offer Wings?

Wingstop is hands down preferred by wing aficionados. The wings are meaty and fresh and the flavors bold. Our expertise is in wings, fries, and sides. We invite you to explore our sauces or dry rubs that range from mild to hot as well as sweet to savory. Our flavors are bold and distinctive! Our food is made to order and can be customized to taste, which is unsual in this industry. Our intimate relationships with our customers differentiate us from the competition. We provide a fresh alternative to fast food.

Your team goes above and beyond. What makes them so good?

We have hand-selected individuals directly from the community. Each of them brings a personality as vibrant as the flavors in our wings.

Tell us about the flavors!

Gladly! Wingstop always offers 11 signature sauces, but since February, our customers have been able to spice up the iconic flavors with “REMIX” flavors like Hot Lemon, Lemon Garlic, and Bayou BBQ. Hurry in and try them all for a limited time!

Do you offer catering?

Yes! We can cater events big or small, corporate or family functions. Our Wingstop catering plan has something for every occasion and group size, all at affordable prices!

Spice up your day with an order of fresh wings today! Wingstop is located at 2438 Sheridan Street. Place a carryout or delivery order at www.wingstop.com or by calling 754-263-2178.

SPECIAL FEATURE Summertime in South Florida is often referred to as the “slow season.” Snowbirds fly north to cooler climates and families go on vacation. Luckily, there are still so many family activities

Take them out to the ballgame! Going to a Marlins game is fun for the whole family and won’t break the bank. Tickets at Loan Depot Park start at just $20! Even if you don’t like baseball, the experience of bringing the family to the ballpark is worth the price of admission. When you head out to the game, don’t be scared off by the weather! The Marlins’ stadium has a retractable roof to protect you from the elements.

Everglades Airboat Tours Check out an alligator in its natural habitat! Airboat tours are a great way to get outside and experience the natural beauty of the everglades. Head over to Everglades Holiday Park for a great day in nature. Be sure to bring a hat and some sunscreen, too, because the South Florida sun will be out in full force. Don’t let that discourage you, though; a cold drink in the everglades will make all your worries go away. Everglades Holiday Park 21940 Griffin Road, Weston 954-434-8111 evergladesholidaypark.com

Hunt for Turtles at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Turtles! A person cannot say enough good things about John Pennekamp State Park. If you love scuba diving or snorkeling, a day trip to the Keys is the perfect way to spend a day. The different fish and coral are beautiful all by themselves, add some sea turtle sightings and you’ve made a memory that no one in the family will ever forget. If you are not a big swimming, you can always take a trip on a glass-bottom boat and see the natural beauty of the coral from the surface! Get Your Groove on at South Beach Believe it or not, the summer is the perfect time for South Florida locals to check out South Beach. It may be hotter, but the crowds are typically smaller, and things are a bit less crazy than Spring Break! The culture, people, and food, however, still make for an incredible experience. If you get hungry, check out Time Out Market near Lincoln Road to discover all the different flavors of Miami in one place. You might want to get an AirBnb and see what America’s best nightlife is all about.

The Hollywood Lions Club Looks After Local Cubs By Beverly Perkins

ions Club International (LCI) is more than 100 years old, with more than 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs, all working together to make our community and the world a better, and kinder place. The Hollywood Lions Club (HLC) is sure to do its part to abide by the foundation’s mission. One way they are helping the local youth is by implementing the new Hollywood Lions Club Scholarship, Inc. The 501(c)3 non-profit fund, evolved under the auspices of the Hollywood Lions Club (HLC) and is known as the HLC Scholarship Fund (HLCSF). The purpose of the fund is to provide grant monies to graduating students from any of the three Hollywood High Schools to encourage and assist with higher education. “The HLC serves our local community with beneficial projects and charitable works. As such, the HLCSF focuses on honoring students who know the value of community good works and helpful solutions. The Leo’s Club, the affiliated Service club within a high

school, is the ideal organization for students to show their aptitude for leadership and service to others,” explained Dale Cheek, President, HLCFS. This is the first year that the Fund went into effect and three $1000 grants were awarded to one worthy student from each of the three local high schools (South Broward, Hollywood Hills, and MacArthur). These grants are unrestricted and help finance their studies at the college or trade school of choice. Wennika Charlemagne, Caitlyn Morales, and Ifeany Uwadia were the 2021 inaugural recipients. To be considered, HLCSF looks for personal qualities such as leadership skills, scholastic aptitude, willingness to serve the community at large, and an ability to want to learn and advance their studies. The funds distributed come from philanthropic foundations and private donations as well as special events.

As part of Rich Aube, Hollywood Lions Club Founding Father and Past President’s recognition speech, the proud lion said, “So as the three of you exemplary grantees move forward to the next chapter in life, remember that as you serve, you grow. The service journey is an approach to living and serving well, to make a real difference people can see and feel.” “The Hollywood Lions Club and its Scholarship Fund are pleased to be able to contribute to local students’ advanced education and the betterment of our Hollywood community. In the years ahead HLCSF intends to grow the funds available to be distributed and the number of grantees honored with such recognition,” added Cheek.

COMMUNITY NEWS SPOTLIGHT

MIRACLES CAN HAPPEN WHEN THE COMMUNITY

Steps Up to the Plate By Beverly Perkins

A

little over a decade ago, a humble Weston family started what has now become a pivotal program for local athletes with disabilities. The Junko family brought the nationally known Miracle League to Weston to allow children (and young adults) with disabilities (regardless of abilities) the opportunity to play baseball right in their “backyard”. For fourteen seasons, the team played at Rose G. Price Park in Pembroke Pines on a custom-designed field with synthetic turf to accommodate wheelchairs and other assisted walking devices. In 2019, the non-profit organization Give Opportunities to Disability wanted to donate to The Weston Miracle League only to find out that it was their last season. Weston resident Herbert Corona was taken aback and was determined to do whatever he could to keep it running. But then came the pandemic and all efforts came to a halt. “We know how important space for leisure activities is because I, myself, got a disability 32 years ago, and my cousin has been working with people with disabilities

for more than 25 years. So, here we are trying to do our best. We are proud to represent The City of Weston,” stated Corona. Currently, Corona is the President of the Weston Miracle League organization, and he is trying to find land in Weston or a current field that can be converted to assist those with disabilities. As The Miracle League slogan says, “Every Child Deserves to Play Baseball”. Therefore, there is no stopping Corona and his all-star team which consists of the many dedicated volunteers, parents, players, and sponsors. Although they cannot change or cure any of these disabilities, the League wants to provide the joy and benefits which come from America’s favorite pastime. “The topic of disability is typically seen in a negative perspective, often with pity and in a discriminatory manner, and few times we see or recognize the many

achievements and contributions by people with disabilities throughout history, such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Thomas Alva Edison, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Hawking, the great George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr., and many others who have made great contributions to humanity,” explained Corona. “The only difference between those people and our players is that they got an opportunity, and we want an opportunity too!”

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

HOLLYWOOD

UPDATE By Mayor Josh Levy

Fellow Hollywood Residents, I hope this edition of Our CityHollywood finds you doing great. Summer is here and thanks to the national, state, and local vaccination effort, the Covid-19 pandemic has finally waned off. As of this writing, our county’s vaccination rate, together with the continuingly lower positivity rate and the lower number of cases per 100,000 people in our county, have enabled City Hall to be reopened to the public as of June 14, 2021. Special events have resumed as well. After more than a year of not gathering, the City’s signature events, such as the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration, the Annual Tree Lighting, and Candy Cane Parade will be back. Our parks have reopened, and special event programming such as movie nights and Funtastic Fridays at the ArtsPark, the monthly Artwalk and classic car show downtown, and live music shows 5 nights-a-week at the beach bandshell have all resumed. Bookmark the parks & rec calendar on the city website or follow the City on social media to stay updated on the latest. Throughout the pandemic, the 1,300+ employees of our city government were hard at work on our behalf. From pandemic impact assistance to sidewalk and road repairs, finance and budget to public works, public safety, and public utilities, our city staff has been charged with an ever-growing list of projects to execute, and every department has risen up to the challenge. Some recent highlights that are aimed at further improving the quality of life that our city offers include. Stormwater Master Plan and Pump Station Assessments. Severe weather events and heavier rainfall, together with sealevel rise have caused more frequent flooding in our city, and the Department of Public Utilities is proactively taking measures to prioritize the maintenance, repair, improvement, and hardening of key infrastructure. Transportation Surtax Fund. We applied for funding for two capital improvement projects for Cycle 2 Surtax funds, including the design and construction of approximately 50 miles of neighborhood greenway bicycle trails throughout various neighborhoods, as identified in the recently completed Bicycle Mobility Plan. General Obligation Projects. The upgrading of our city parks, sports fields, golf courses, and arts education facilities, a new police headquarters building and fire/rescue equipment to facilitate our public safety, neighborhood traffic calming measures, seawalls to protect against sea-level rise, landscaping, and sound walls - is fully underway, with everything in some level of procurement, planning, engineering, design, and/or construction. We launched a three-dimensional property data and zoning map platform that brings much-improved simplicity, transparency, and efficiency for residents and investors when needing to research any property’s zoning and development regulations and potential. Check it out under the Planning & Urban Design page under Development Services on the city website. There is much more to highlight, such as our improvement of the way the city’s noise ordinance works, our engagement of third-party system that will help us monitor and control all the vacation rentals that have popped up in our city. Please visit the city website for the latest - www.HollywoodFL.org. Thanks for all you do as a resident of our city. Together we will continue to do great things!
