he United States will turn 246 this year. This is cause for celebration. We live in the world’s longest-running representative democracy since Julius Caesar ended the Roman Republic over 2,000 years ago.

Our country’s ability to evolve with the times while maintaining its constitutional government is one of the keys to our long-lasting success. In large part, we have George Washington to thank for that. Washington was an extraordinarily popular figure following the end of the Revolutionary War and many people were calling for a strong executive to serve as President. While they did not want a king, many wanted a “strong” leader with king-like powers. If Washington chose to consolidate power during his early days as President, rather than humbly focusing on establishing a democracy, history could have turned out very differently. This is precisely what happened in France just three years after Washington left office. Napoleon Bonaparte quickly morphed his role as First Consul of France into the lifetime Emperor of France. It is easy to imagine decades of unrest and conflict had Washington had similar ambitions. While we watch the fireworks and celebrate Independence Day this year, lets give a nod of gratitude to our first President. George Washington set the example for every American leader. We all can aspire to his humility and deep belief in duty, especially our elected officials.

STAR-SPANGLED SPECTACULAR BEACH 4th of July Celebration on Hollywood

ll are welcome to celebrate our nation’s 246th birthday on Hollywood Beach on Monday, July 4, 2022 at the annual StarSpangled Spectacular 4th of July Celebration. Sponsored by the City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency-Beach District, this annual event will feature entertainment beginning at 5:00 p.m. and offshore fireworks display beginning at 9:00 p.m.

Traffic & Parking Information

Access to the barrier island will be limited. The Hollywood Police Department will be monitoring parking and beach capacity in an effort to maintain a safe environment for all. Once capacity is reached, motorist will be directed to seek an alternative.

Sun Shuttle

The Hollywood Sun Shuttle will transport riders from City Hall Circle to downtown Hollywood, Hollywood Beach and along Federal Highway. An App requested ride is $1.00 per fare. A flag down ride is free. Flag down riders can and hop on and off along the route. The Sun Shuttle will be operating from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on July 4th. Download the free “Ride Circuit” App from the App Store or Google Play. Riders should expect heavy traffic and lengthy service delays.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft drivers may drop-off and pick-up passengers at the designated ride share spot on Tyler Street between A1A and Surf Road. Riders should expect heavy traffic delays.

Driving

Access to and from the barrier island at Sheridan Street is closed. From 11:00 a.m. to midnight (12:00 a.m.), the Hollywood Police Department will restrict southbound traffic between Sheridan Street and Hollywood Boulevard to one lane. Northbound traffic will be directed to exit at Dania Beach Boulevard. Broward County Transit will travel northbound only during this time frame. From 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m., no eastbound traffic will be permitted onto the barrier island via Dania

Beach Boulevard. During this time, all lanes on Ocean Drive between Sheridan Street and Dania Beach Boulevard will be directed to travel northbound in an effort to assist motorist in exiting the barrier island. From 11:00 a.m. until midnight (12:00 a.m.) no westbound traffic will be permitted to exit the barrier island via Hollywood Beach Boulevard. Eastbound traffic will be directed north to Dania Beach Boulevard or south to Hallandale Beach Boulevard up until 8:00 p.m. From 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m. all eastbound traffic from Hollywood Boulevard to Ocean Drive will be directed southbound only. From 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. all northbound traffic on Ocean Drive will be directed to Dania Beach Boulevard. From 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., access to the barrier island will be closed. All eastbound traffic will be U-Turned and directed back westbound on Dania Beach Boulevard.

Alcoholic beverages, fireworks of all types, sparklers, glass, single-use plastic and foam items, coolers larger than 36” long and barbecue grills are prohibited and could be confiscated. Picnicking is permitted on the sandy beach only between Sherman and Custer streets as well as within Charnow Park at Garfield Street, Keating Park at Magnolia Terrace, and Harry Berry Park at Azalea Terrace. Canopies larger than 10’ X 10’ are prohibited. To help keep Hollywood Beach beautiful, visitors are reminded to bring reusable items and clean up after themselves at the end of the day. Please do not over-fill trash receptacles. As a reminder, Hollywood Beach is plastic and foam-free. Single-use plastics, foam containers, plastic bags, bottles and utensils are prohibited on Hollywood Beach, at City-operated parks and other City facilities. It is prime nesting season for several protected species of sea turtles. Turtle nesting activity is normal and should not be considered an emergency. If you plan to stake out a spot on the sand to watch the fireworks, please remember the nesting habits of sea turtles can be impacted by light sources, including flashlights. If you do encounter a sea turtle or sea turtle nest, do not disturb it. Knowingly interfering with a sea turtle nest could result in civil or even criminal penalties and fines. All boaters are advised to travel at safe speeds and to watch for threatened or endangered species including manatees and sea turtles. Help reduced mosquito breeding habitats by eliminating standing water in and around your property. The life cycle of a mosquito is approximately seven days. They can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads.

BROWARD STUDENTS CELEBRATE National Merit Scholarships

he National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 17 Broward County seniors recipients of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.7 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states. Fewer than 8,000 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. he City of Hollywood Code Compliance and the Hollywood Police Department are actively enforcing the City’s Noise Ordinance rules, which include additional rules and requirements that went into effect in 2021. Vacation Rentals must be equipped with a noise level detection device alerting the property owner/representative and tenants to noise emanating from the Vacation Rental, and (ii) all data produced by this device will be retained for a period of 180 days and made available to the City upon request. A statement advising the occupant that the volume of noise generated at the Vacation Rental is limited by the City Noise Ordinance. A noise level detection device alerting the property owner/representative and tenant shall be installed in every Vacation Rental. Report Issues with Short-Term/Vacation Rental Properties Hollywood has implemented a tool to help report problematic vacation rental properties. Whether it is a loud party or concerns with parking or trash, residents can report issues 24 hours a day to a live operator via a dedicated customer service telephone phone number, or via the website. To report an issue call: 954-231-2375 or scan the QR code. The 24/7 hotline and website will allow for: • Improved response time with real-time outreach to registered property owners/managers • Easy tracking of properties and issues • Full documentation of photo, audio, and video evidence of noncompliance for evidence-based citations and easily identify problem properties • Efficient and convenient reporting tools available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Property owners, property managers and/or the emergency contacts who are registered with the City will be immediately notified and given 30 minutes to resolve most issues. For more complex issues, staff will work with property owners/managers toward resolution. If there is no response from the property owner/manager, the problem persists, or the property is unlicensed, the issue will then be escalated accordingly. Unlicensed Properties There are likely thousands of rental properties operating in Hollywood without a license. Residents are encouraged to report these locations. Issues with unlicensed properties, trash collection, advertising, etc. may not be resolved within a 30-minute window, however, the more these types of issues are reported, the better the response to resolution time will be.

he first question is: Why do I need to avoid Probate? The two part answer is very simple. The first is cost. Probate is incredibly expensive. The Florida Legislature wrote into the statutes the cost of Probate. It is a 3% of the total estate. Might not sound like a lot, but keep in mind that the home, bank accounts, stock accounts, etc are usually part of the gross estate. Which means it would not be hard to reach $1 MM of assets, or $30,000 of Probate fees. The second reason is time. A quick probate takes a year. During that time, the taxes, insurance, and maintenance of the house still needs to occur. So how do you avoid Probate? A Revocable Living Trust completely avoids Probate. This means that you will not have to spend the money nor time in Probate. The Revocable Living Trust also enables you to also delegate how the money is transferred to your loved ones. Meaning, all at once, or over time. For instance, imagine a family with two kids in their late teens when the Revocable Living Trust is created. Few years into the future, and the parents have a horrendous car accident and the kids now inherit a $1 MM life insurance policy. I am not sure that giving $1 MM in cash to a young 20 year old is a great idea. For this reason, a Revocable Living Trust can help the kids navigate through life without tempting them to be wasteful with their money. However, if the Revocable Living Trust is not properly funded, then it would not do any good. Funding the trust is simply the process of transferring assets to it. Essentially, you must change legal ownership of your assets from your name into the trust’s name, such as real estate. This also means you’ll have to change most beneficiary designations for Life Insurance policies, 401k and retirement accounts. It is not recommended to place the 401k and retirement accounts directly into the Revocable Living Trust for tax and structure consequences.

Canada-Florida Trade Mission

I was pleased to take part in the recent CanadaFlorida Chamber of Commerce’s Trade Mission at the Colony West Golf Club in Tamarac, where I had the opportunity to kick off day two of the conference with a welcome to the participants and an overview of the City of Hollywood. Twelve Canadian companies were welcomed to South Florida for the three-day trade mission that included workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities with Canada-Florida Chamber of Commerce members, mayors from across Broward County, and representatives from Enterprise Florida, Venture Miami, and Miami-Dade College. Existing Canadian entrepreneurs and owners of small businesses who launched or expanded in Florida also participated to share their experiences and expertise with the visiting prospective businesses. The prospective businesses represented various fields including information technology, artificial intelligence, communications, 3D mapping solutions, and cleaning services. The trade mission wrapped with the companies pitching their business plans to expert panelists. I appreciate the Canada-Florida Chamber of Commerce’s mission to help facilitate trade and investment between entrepreneurs and businesses while advocating for policies that support cross-border trade.

Earlier this year Port Everglades welcomed the largest cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean International’s “Wonder of the Seas,” which docked at her new homeport for her inaugural season. Work is now underway to transform the Port’s Cruise Terminal 4 into a second home for Disney Cruise Line. Improvements to Cruise Terminal 4 and the adjacent berth will begin once the interior and exterior designs are complete. I am told the entire project will be completed by Fall 2023 when Disney Cruise Line sails for the first time from the Port. Under a 15-year partnership with the County, one ship will call Port Everglades home year-round and will be joined by a second, seasonal ship in 2025. The agreement supports an estimated 1,111 direct local jobs generating $31.6 million in wages and $12.3 million in state and local taxes, according to a study by nationally recognized maritime research company Martin Associates. Port Everglades is one of the three busiest cruise ports in the world, typically hosting nearly 4 million passengers annually. As you know, 80% of Port Everglades in located within the City of Hollywood, please join me as I welcome these exciting industry leaders to our City.

Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 100 Years

Happy Birthday to the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. According to newspaper clipping from the day, on June 24th, 1922, The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce was organized in the store of Homer Messick on Hollywood Boulevard. About a dozen businessmen and the first residents of Hollywood met to discuss the idea of forming an organization that would “be of benefit” in disseminating information about the new city and resort and would assist in the proper building of the city and securing of industries, business houses and conventions. Under the guidance of the first Chamber President Joseph Young, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce was formed. Fast-forward 100 years, and the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce continues to serve their more than 800 members and our business community through the guidance and leadership of CEO/Executive Director Marie Suarez. Wishing the “Greatest” Hollywood Chamber of Commerce 100 more years of success!
