HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Back to School!

S

ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. This year was a bit different than most. Many students have not attended in-person classes for more than 18 months. This year, the transition back to school will be unlike any other. Most local kids return to school on August 18th this year. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There is a myriad of activities and opportunities from which families to choose. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools, or online learning. Having so many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear; Our City is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains helpful information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of. The material is curated to provide our readers with a valuable guide to help them get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started!

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Local Woman Showers Love on the Homeless By Terry Jaillet

T

here are angels among us. It may not seem like it. But there are. People with such a strong sense of empathy that they change their lives in service of the less fortunate. Jeanne Albaugh is one of these people. In 2016 Jean and a small group of friends founded Showering Love. Showering Love is a 501c3 Non-profit that provides mobile showers, new undergarments, socks, hygiene kits, and other

supportive services for the homeless. The organization provides these services by using a novel idea: a bus named “Grace.” “Grace” is a 44 foot former Miami City Bus that has been converted into a self-contained mobile shower platform equipped with 2 handicap-accessible private showers and restroom facilities. Showering Love meets Guests where they are, and partners with churches, universities, government agencies, law enforcement, hairstylists & barbers, meal-sharing programs, and other non-profits.

Jeanne knows a thing or two about being homeless. She spent ten years on the streets of Broward County without a home. After some unfortunate events in her life, Jeanne went from living on Park Avenue to a park bench. “I scurried around from place to place and slept wherever I could,” said Jeanne, “I begged for money, holding a sign under a bridge. People graciously gave me food and money, but, without a place to shower, my hygiene and personal appearance deteriorated.” Jeanne took advantage of numerous programs to help the homeless addressed her issues and became self-sufficient. She, however, will never forget those dark desolate nights and decided to dedicate herself to

helping homeless people regain their dignity. In addition to personal hygiene, Showering Love offers haircuts, backpacks, wellness checks, hot meals, and non-perishable food. They also connect homeless people with health care programs. Most importantly, Grace provides opportunities for guests and volunteers to break down barriers, and form relationships within the community.

Showering Love is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. To donate, learn more or find other ways to support their mission, visit www.showeringlove.com

LEGALLY SPEAKING

THE REALITY OF EQUAL TIME SHARING

A

CLAIMSPRO CONSULTING

By Evan H. Baron, Esq.

s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interests of the children in all situations. I will however state that it is becoming the norm, rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in a better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule such as pilots or firefighters also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child. This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is yes and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance, that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time, without some additional proof, will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising.

with a School Supply Drive By Beverly Perkins

efore the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 200,000 students in Broward Schools were living in poverty, based on qualification and participation in the National School Lunch Program where students receive meals through school at a discount or for free. According to 90% of teachers surveyed by the national nonprofit Kids in Need Foundation, 3 students in 4 arrive to class without the requisite school supplies necessary for learning. Unfortunately, the effects of the pandemic have drastically increased the need for these basic school supplies.

“Basic school supplies are always in demand, but even more so now,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “It’s vital we do everything in our power to provide students with the tools they need to stay engaged and focused. We are so appreciative of all the individuals and local businesses who step up each year to support our resilient students who are so eager to learn.” Fortunately, the Broward Education Foundation has always recognized the need especially, at the Title 1 schools since they have contributed more than $3 million to Broward County schools. The only nonprofit charitable organization solely dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools recently launched its annual school supply drive with BEFdrive.com to help equip students with the essential supplies they will need for the upcoming 2021-22 school year.

“Broward Education Foundation remains incredibly responsive to the shifting needs in education within our community,” said Tim Curtin, board chair of Broward Education Foundation. “Last year, we reimagined our annual Back to School campaign into a fully virtual model to follow health protocols and delivered safely sealed individual basic school supply kits to students throughout the county. It worked so well that we’re continuing this model with even more supplies for each student!” “I love the ability to supplement my students’ basic school supplies at any point in the school year,” exclaimed Mindy Rechter, Colbert Elementary School first grade teacher. “They also have backpacks and treasure chest goodies.”

Financial donations of any amount go a long way. A gift of just $10 provides one student with the necessities for success. To sponsor an individual student, a class, or an entire school please visit BEFdrive.com before August 31, 2021.

SCHOOL NEWS

A NEW MEANING FOR

Bed, Bath, & Beyond By Beverly Perkins

A

s the school year wrapped up with graduations, recognition ceremonies continued as some students enjoyed their “Senior Send-Off” drive-through style. Broward Education Foundation (BEF) in collaboration with Destination Dorm delivered essentials to Broward County public high school graduating seniors who have experienced housing instability or extreme adversity. Additionally, 25 students were surprised when the BEF presented them with four-year scholarships funded through The Frederick A. Deluca Foundation. These recipients graduated from Boyd Anderson, Coral Glades, Coral Springs, Deerfield, Dillard, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale, Lauderhill, Nova, Piper,

Plantation, Pompano Beach, South Broward, South Plantation, Stranahan, and West Broward High Schools. These ambitious students plan on attending outstanding colleges and universities in and out of state. One scholarship recipient, a low-income first-generation college student with a family from another country, shared a bit of background and plans in their scholarship application essay. “When I was ten, my mother, sisters, and I moved into a domestic violence shelter, which would be the first of several shelters we would live in. It was difficult being unsure of where I would rest my head every night, and I often felt like I would never be able to have a bright future. However, the one thing

that remained consistent for me was school. I may not have had a home to go to every night, but my mother made sure that I went to the same classes, with the same classmates, year after year. Because of this, school became a refuge for me, which motivated me to want to perform well academically.” The graduating seniors received laptops, bedding, toiletries, and so much more to ensure they can comfortably begin the next exciting phase of their lives. The giving collaboration included Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Broward County Public Schools Homeless Education Assistance Resource Team (HEART), and Immanuel Temple Church.

The student concluded their essay by saying, “I challenged the limits of my academic potential until I surpassed it. It took long nights doing my homework in the car my family lived in to reach the point of ranking in the top ten percent of my school and being the Valedictorian of my class. Receiving this scholarship would be greatly appreciated in helping me transition to college with all the essentials I will need to do so.”

The Place Where Everybody Knows Your Name By: Nick Jaillet

A Celebration For Our Loyal Customers & Friends!

29 Years Serving Broward County Shenanigans will celebrate its 29th anniversary on Sunday, August 29th. Shenanigans was Broward County’s first Gastropub and is still one of the best places to get a meal, watch a game or enjoy a drink.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the sitcom Cheers was one of the most popular shows on television. The show centered on a fictional bar in Boston, where owner, Sam Malone created an environment where the staff and guests all felt like family. It was an ideal place to eat a meal with the family or enjoy a cocktail with friends. Lucky for us, Christine and Patrick Utter have created exactly the same environment at local mainstay Shenanigans Sports Pub. Shenanigans, the winner of Our City’s 2020 Best of Hollywood Award for Best Pub, offers a fun, friendly, informal atmosphere to enjoy South Florida’s highest quality farm-to-table food, craft cocktails, and extensive selection of beers. Every meal is made from fresh, never-frozen ingredients.

A True Family Business Co-owner, Patrick has over 50 years of experience in the restaurant business. He started as a dishwasher, eventually working his way up to owner. Patrick’s wife, Christine, has been in the business for over 20 years. In addition to the traditional gastro-pub fare, Christine brought in healthier, lighter dining options, including healthy salads, quinoa, grilled vegetables, all-white albacore tuna, veggie burgers, beyond burgers, and much more! The staff at Shenanigans act more like a big, friendly family than co-workers. Many employees have been part of the Shenanigans family since the beginning, 29 years ago.

Cheers to 29 Years! Join us Sunday, August 29th

WMODA Exhibits Treasures From Around the World

T

By Terry Jaillet

he Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts was founded in Dania Beach, Florida in 2014 by Arthur Wiener and his family. The museum celebrates the fired arts of ceramics and glass and visitors can see beautiful pottery and porcelain art from the 18th century to the present day. The Wiener Museum introduces the work of British pottery pioneers, such as Josiah Wedgwood and Sir Henry Doulton, as well as European designers from Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. The glass galleries at the Wiener Museum showcase the art of French designer Renée Lalique and Venetian maestros from Murano, as well as local glass artists working in South Florida. The highlight of the Hot Glass gallery is a spectacular collection of Chihuly. Contemporary ceramic art from the Ardmore studio in South Africa is one of the favorite exhibits at the Wiener museum, which hosts a varied program of exhibitions and cultural events. The museum is located on Federal Highway in Dania Beach and is a great place to spend a couple of hours when it’s too hot or raining out. WMODA has a number of incredible exhibits:

Ceramic Art FANTASTIQUE Fantastique celebrates the enchanted world of ceramic art at WMODA. From myths and monsters to fairies and fables, you will be spellbound by the flights of fancy of European ceramic artists during the last two centuries. Fire-breathing dragons of the Dark Ages do battle with heroic knights or guard the treasures of the Eastern seas. The spectacular Niagara chandelier, featuring cascades of porcelain fairies, was donated as the centerpiece of this show by Lladró of Spain in December 2020. CARNIVAL & CABARET It’s party time at the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts as they celebrate the art of having fun at Carnival & Cabaret. This entertaining exhibit explores the flamboyant festivals in Venice, Rio, and New Orleans as seen by porcelain artists from Europe. Discover how Harlequin and Columbine and other characters from the Italian Commedia dell’Arte have influenced carnival fun, the art of clowning and masquerade balls through the ages. A SAFARI FOR THE SOUL A giant smiling hippopotamus greets you as you enter the contemporary ceramics gallery. The hippo was made by Ardmore Ceramic Arts, a thriving artist collective in the picturesque Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The studio was started thirty-five years ago by Fée Halsted, a talented ceramic artist who teaches

local men and women how to make and decorate pottery. There are now around 80 sculptors and painters in the Ardmore studio making whimsical and uplifting works of art. Ardmore ceramic art is one of the most popular features at WMODA. THE ART OF TEA Elegant china enriches the tea-drinking experience as can be seen at the Art of Tea exhibition at the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts. Discover how skilled potters have provided the most appropriate tea services to suit all tastes and budgets for the last three centuries.

Glass GLASS IS HOT @WMODA The contemporary glass collection at WMODA features the work of many of the world’s leading glass masters. The Art on Fire exhibit is dominated by the work of Dale Chihuly and the Venetian maestro’s Lino Tagliapietra and Pino Signoretto. The Hot Glass gallery also celebrates the creative exuberance of Chihuly’s collaborators and students, such as William Morris and Toots Zynsky. CONSTELLATIONS Visitors are star-struck with the new installation of Windstars by Rob Stern at WMODA. Rob is known particularly for his blown glass star sculptures, which are dedicated to his father, a consummate stargazer fascinated by cosmic phenomena. THE ART OF THE FLAME This exhibit celebrates the 50-year career of Paul J. Stankard, America’s greatest glass flame worker. Paul’s homage to nature and the cycle of life is encapsulated in crystal orbs, columns, and paperweights. The petals, pistils, and stamens in his intricate botanical bouquets are painstakingly created by melting thin rods of colored glass with a blue flame. EARTH · AIR · FIRE · WATER Celebrate the beauty of nature in the Fired Arts. This exhibit highlights the four classical elements that ancient philosophers believed were the fundamental building blocks of nature. See how today’s artists are breathing life into glass by using the earth’s natural resources. Hear how the 1000 Mermaids Project is helping to restore Florida’s coral reefs with the City of Dania Beach, which is home to WMODA. Dive into WMODA to SEA IT, LIVE IT, LOVE IT. is located at 481 S Federal ▸ WMODA Hwy, Dania Beach. The museum is

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Inspection Program

F

By Mayor Josh Levy

ollowing the building collapse tragedy in the Town of Surfside, there have been questions on how the building safety inspection program in Broward County works. For this column, I’d like to share the below overview with you. *May the victims of the Surfside tragedy always remain of blessed memory. The Broward County 40-Year or Older Building Safety Inspection Program was created in 2005 and became effective throughout Broward County in January 2006. Modeled after Miami-Dade County’s program which has been in effect since the 1970’s, Broward’s program calls for structural and electrical safety inspections for buildings 40 years old or older and every ten years thereafter. Exempt from this program are: One- and two-family dwellings U.S. government buildings State of Florida owned buildings Schools under the jurisdiction of the Broward County School Board Buildings built on Indian reservations All buildings under 3,500 square feet Both Broward and Miami-Dade County have had instances of structural building failures. This program helps minimize the possibilities of future building failure and better prepares us for hurricane winds. Because of Hurricane Wilma, the worst storm to impact Broward County in 50 years, some cities could not implement the program in 2006. The City of Hollywood works with Broward County to ensure buildings in our City, 40 years and older, are in compliance with the Broward County 40-Year or Older Building Safety Inspection Program. When a building reaches 40-years or older, a notice is sent by the City to inform the building owner of record to have a structural inspection performed by a 3rd party certified architect or engineer and an electrical system inspection performed by a 3rd party license electrical contractor. The engineer’s report will identify any deficiencies, which will necessitate repair permits. It is the sole responsibility of the property owner to hire a 3rd party Florida registered Professional Engineer Architect and Electrical Engineer to perform the required inspections. After review of the reports, if the building is determined to be safe property owner’s will not be required to have another Building Safety Inspection for ten (10) years. In the event the engineer’s report proves there are structural or electrical deficiencies that pose an immediate threat to life, health, safety or where failure of a critical component is imminent, the property owner shall have 180 days from the date of the report to obtain the required permit(s) and complete the necessary repairs. Once repairs have been made, the building’s engineer will certify the building as safe for continued occupancy for the next ten years. The final report, along with the review fee shall be submitted to the City by the property owner. There is a $300.00 fee, at the time of submittal, for the City of Hollywood Building Department to review the property owner’s 3rd party reports. There is no fee for resubmissions/rechecks. To submit your 40-Year Inspection packet, please email buildingrecertification@hollywoodfl.org For more information regarding the 40-Year or Older Building Safety Program or other inquires, please contact Marlen Batista at 954.921.3025 or 954.921.3335.
