A Fresh Start to the New School Year
As summer draws to a close, it’s astonishing how quickly the new school year approaches.
This year, Broward County students head back to school earlier than ever, with the first day set for August 12th. As we transition from beach days to school days, it’s time to gather supplies, pick out new lunch boxes, and finish those last-minute summer reading projects. Preparing for school has certainly evolved over the years, becoming more complex with the rise of technology and diverse educational choices.
The era of covering textbooks in brown paper bags is long gone. Today’s students are immersed in a digital world where learning materials are accessed through smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. With countless educational apps and online resources, students can explore a wealth of information right at their fingertips.
After-school activities have expanded far beyond traditional sports and music programs. Now, students can delve into coding classes, dual language programs, and much more. Parents, too, have a plethora of educational paths to consider. Alongside conventional public and private schools, options like charter schools, homeschooling, and virtual learning provide families with the flexibility to choose what best fits their needs.
Feeling overwhelmed by back-to-school preparations? Don’t worry—Our City has got you covered. This issue features our extensive Back-to-School Guide, filled with information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. Additionally, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of after-school activities, from arts and crafts to YMCA programs, designed to help you plan a successful school year.
While preparing for the upcoming school year, don’t forget to savor the final weeks of summer. Enjoy the sun, create lasting memories, and embrace the freedom of the season. Soon enough, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of learning and growth will begin.
So, take a moment to relax, enjoy the remaining days of summer, and know that you have everything you need to start the school year off right. Here’s to a fantastic and successful new school year!

decades, especially the ones who’ve made their way from the west side.”
Shenanigans has been a local institution for over three decades, initially founded in 1992 near T-Y Park in Hollywood. Almost two years ago, Patrick and wife-partner Christine consolidated their operations post-pandemic at the Federal Highway outpost they started in 2008, formerly known as Shenanigans Eastside Pub.
“It’s funny that people still refer to it as ‘the new location,’ Patrick says. “It’s not so new – we’ve been here for 16

years. But it seems like we opened it just yesterday.”
Shenanigans is known for cold beer, great burgers and wings, and a wide-ranging menu with more than 200 items, everything from barbecue smoked in-house to health-minded options, including salads and cauliflower-crust pizza. With rotating weekly specials and hearty $13.99 lunch specials, Patrick describes the fare as “elevated,” we’re not just a sports bar; we’re a sports gastropub.” We have late-night dining with a kitchen open until 1 a.m. on

weeknights and 3 a.m. Friday-Saturday.”
Besides longtime regular patrons, Shenanigans also features many familiar faces among the staff.
The approaching NFL and college football seasons always inspire hope and bring crowds. Until then, Shenanigans will make customers cheer (and say “Cheers”) with a slew of summer drink specials.
Enjoy refreshing drink specials including $8 fresh fruit Piña Coladas and strawberry daiquiris, and $7 Jose Cuervo Margaritas. Try a bucket of five Landshark beers for just $10. Enjoy $4 draft lager pints (a specialty beer made for Shenanigans), $4 Michelob Ultra longnecks, and $4 shots of Screwballs and NUTRL Pineapple.
Other all-day drink specials feature $7 Jim Beam Bourbon, Captain Morgan Rum, Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum, Absolut Vodka, and Jameson Irish Whiskey.
Satisfy your hunger with $8 Happy Hour bar bites such as loaded potato skins, nachos, pulled pork sliders, and cauliflower-crust cheese pizzette. These specials are available from 3-6 p.m. and midnight until closing at the bar, with a beverage purchase required.
The Shenanigans on Federal Highway was born when Pat bought two neighboring restaurants in 2008. He connected the properties by building a tiki-thatched covered breezeway. The south side has a family-friendly dining room and a Southern Pride smoker that offers a full range of barbecue options.
The north side features a traditional sports bar environment with a large bar, high-top tables, and a kitchen with a multi-deck Baker’s Pride brick pizza oven.
When he opened the original Shenanigans in 1992, Patrick wanted to bring better options to the dark and smoky world of sports pubs. A lot has changed in the decades since, but his team’s passion for quality, value, and hospitality hasn’t wavered.
“Our formula is still the same – this is where the locals go,” Patrick says.

ANIMALS
ANIMALS is an all-encompassing, interactive exhibition that looks at the animals around us and how human interaction plays a role in endangerment and survival. From domestic household pets to wild invasive or endangered species, animals are presented through various methods including painting, sculpture, mixed media, and video. This extensively curated collection seeks to unravel the mysteries behind these connections and convey the importance of the role of animals in our environment.
The spectrum of this exhibit also includes how animals have historically been depicted as symbols of prestige and religious icons. They often represent spiritual connection, imprinting into our lives through unspoken communication and connection. ANIMALS invites visitors to learn and identify species as they may partake in hands-on components of this exhibition, including scavenger searches and craft activities.
The exhibition is curated by Meaghan Kent, Curator of Exhibitions and Charles Jackson Adkins Jr., Assistant Curator.
[dNASAb]: Faux Ecologies + Augmented Visions of the Nature-verse
[dNASAb] is an innovative sculptor of ecosystems, infusing discarded materials and consumer electronics while pioneering new technologies through extended, augmented realities. His new project, Faux Ecologies + Augmented Visions of the Natureverse, blends environmental conservation, art, and technology to engage viewers as co-creators and advocates for sustainability. The artist seeks to challenge prevailing notions of loss, decay, e-waste, and environmental degradation.
[dNASAb] begins with upcycled ocean debris and reclaimed plastics, transforming them into kinetic sculptures inspired by underwater life, highlighting the need to protect marine ecosystems from plastic pollution. He then uses Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) scans to capture the sculptures in natural environments, creating precise 3D models. These models enable an Augmented Reality (AR) experience that merges physical and virtual elements during the exhibition, offering an immersive and interactive journey for viewers. The project also employs AI-assisted videos and artificial intelligence models trained from documentation imagery of Biscayne Bay underwater sculptural interventions and materials, to create generative videos that depict a plasticized ocean.
Following the exhibition, the AR project transforms into stand-alone digital art, allowing audiences local and worldwide to access the AR experience. The permanent AR installation remains on-site, preserving the artwork and emphasizing the importance of using technology to extend the life and impact of art.

Historic Hollywood Beach Golf Club to Undergo $12 Million Transformation
The golf course and clubhouse at Hollywood Beach Golf Club near Downtown Hollywood will be closed for construction until approximately June of 2025. This exciting General Obligation Bond project includes a complete renovation of the 18-hole golf course that includes a new irrigation system, cart paths, landscaping, course restroom renovation, and parking located at 1645 Polk Street, an addition to the existing maintenance building, and a new clubhouse.
The City of Hollywood, selected Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to re-design the course layout just blocks from downtown Hollywood. Mythology has surrounded the 18-hole course since its early 1920’s inception as it has erroneously been credited to Donald Ross in the past. The possibility exists that an unattributed 1923 plan may have been created by Willie Park, Jr., who had a professional relationship with the original developer at the time. Nonetheless,
Richard is utilizing the 1923 concept as inspiration for his re-design.
As part of the new layout, existing lakes will be expanded to raise the flood-prone eastern half of the property, providing much-needed topographical character to the course as well. Greens raised above grade are all accessible from the ground yet will require precision from the air. A true City course, HBGC is surrounded by
residential streets on all four sides, making it a crucial element of green space for Hollywood.
The project is expected to cost around $12 million dollars and comes on the back of multiple multi-story projects around Young Circle and the beautification project along Hollywood Boulevard.
FOUNDER'S DAY CELEBRATION Hollywood Historical Society Honors Joseph W. Young
It was around 1920, the story goes, when Joseph W. Young, a developer and visionary from California, stood in a field somewhere near the center of today’s downtown Hollywood. Looking East toward the ocean, he declared: “This is where I will build my dream city”.
And build it he did. So on the anniversary of his birthday every year, August 4th, the Hollywood Historical Society throws a party! And since the 4th luckily falls on the first Sunday of the month this year, when the HHS holds its Downtown Walking Tour, exhibits at the Downtown Classic Car Show and opens its doors to the public for docent-led tours of the Historical Hammerstein House at 1520 Polk Street, we’ll be celebrating on all cylinders!
Visitors will have the chance to see the fact-filled and fascinating exhibit about the beginnings and growth of the Hollywood Historical Society. And with the approach of the 100th anniversary of the City of Hollywood, we’ll be starting our 2025 Centennial exhibitions at Hamm House with a show focusing on Joseph Young and his vision of Hollywood adopting the City Beautiful movement.
According to an article by Joan Mickelson, author, historian and our Head Archivist Emeritus, Young followed the movement when he drew the city plan with its broad Boulevard intersected by three circles. Soon came several elegant resort hotels, the renowned Country Club, various office buildings, a bridge at the Boulevard spanning the Inland Waterway, a splendid railroad station, an Olympic salt-water pool, and a school. There was land for parks, and from the start, underground power cables, water and sewers, a telephone system, sidewalks, and handsome street lighting.
In 1925, when Hollywood was incorporated as a city, Young was elected first Mayor but resigned to develop the Hollywood Harbor project, today known as Port Everglades.
Sadly, Young died at only 51, on February 27, 1934, in his home at 1055 Hollywood Boulevard, denying the world of any future cities as special as ours. Almost immediately upon his passing, the Hollywood city commission renamed the former Circle Park/Harding Circle to Young Circle, and on August 1, 1935, Mayor Arthur W. Kellner issued a Proclamation designating Young's birthdate as Founder's Day and a public holiday for the city.
The first Founder’s Day was quite the event! More than 2,000 townspeople attended the all-day affair, which included a golf tournament at the Municipal Golf Course (now Orangebrook), water sports at the beach Casino, band concerts by two local boys' bands, a dance program by local children, picnics at the beach, speakers, and a ball game at Dowdy Field. (Editor’s note -- check out the progress of improvements at Dowdy Field, Orangebrook and other city recreation spots, thanks to the GO Bond you voted for a few years back.)
The Hollywood Historical Society is proud to continue this tradition, and welcomes all to celebrate with us! Please call 954923-5590 or email HollywoodFLhistory@ att.net for details.
These exhibits and events are just a taste of the Hollywood Historical Society’s agenda supporting its mission to keep the City’s history alive for today and the future. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3)* cultural organization founded and operated by volunteers. For more information or to join us, please email HollywoodFLHistory@att.net, or visit http://www.hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org/. Hammerstein House is open for docent-led tours on the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 4, or by appointment.
The Hollywood Historical Society has over 20,000 items in its collection and also offers many unique items for sale at the Research Center behind Hammerstein House at 1520 Polk St. Please call 954-923-5590 for hours.
Knowledge of effective practices that cultivate, support, and develop leaders within the organization can be addressed questioning the old mentality and streaming to light the new paradigm of current events fostering change. As shown in the Harvard Business Review article by Yohn (2021) “This approach no longer works for several reasons. For one,
Covid-19 has upended how leaders interact with employees and how coworkers connect with each other. The need to adapt quickly and remain flexible during the pandemic has also revealed the ineffectiveness of a top-down leadership approach.”
In the business of education leaders need to show their competency in the cultivation of leadership. Schools have faced a devastating blow in how management takes place within the structure of directors, assistant directors, department chairs, teachers, and resource officers. Now each person, is themselves a leader, developer, programmer, and initiator of change. How can leaders cultivate and support this new way of effectively and dynamically developing future leaders within their organizations?
Cultivating leaders within the organization takes a true leader at heart. A leader who understands, as stated by Sun Tzu in the Art of War, “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Supreme
excellence consists of breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.” In the battle against COVID-19, there will be many silent enemies, leaders will face such as technology, absenteeism, illness, teacher shortages, not enough resources to mitigate a safe return to school, etc. However, a leader can break the enemy’s resistance by innovation and as stated by Collinson & Cook (2007), “… inquiry is vital in organizations that want to learn (p. 93). Collinson and Cook (2007) point out the necessity of inquiry and the attitudes that follow allowing for collateral learning, open-mindedness, willingness for change, and most importantly a ‘hospitable relationship to learning’ (p. 94).
Among practicing school leaders, the ones who could adapt, change, and innovate showed a more positive outcome for the competency on development and cultivation of school leadership. Leaders who rule without change become extinct, as do their institutions.

2024/25 SCHOOL CALENDAR
AUGUST UPDATE
By Mayor Josh Levy
Fellow Hollywood Residents, With the new school year beginning on August 12th, I wish all of our Hollywood students and families a successful year of academic achievement and personal growth.
In September, our City Commission will hold its annual budget approval meetings. Our new fiscal year begins on October 1st of each year, and through our continuing commitment to governance that is future-oriented, and employing a collaborative approach to fiscal sustainability through long-range planning, our city is again able to reinvest a greater number of dollars into improving our community - and we will do so this year at a slightly reduced property tax millage rate. Our ability to fund key budget initiatives while reducing the operating millage rate is made possible by the once again very strong value growth in our city’s economic base (9.6%). This year’s property tax rate reduction collectively saves us taxpayers about $500,000, and although it does not amount to much savings on an individual property owner
basis, it is a step in the right direction. The last time the City lowered the millage rate was 15 years ago, and our new rate gets us back to the rate that was adopted 13 years ago, while still funding this year’s key initiatives with an even greater number of dollars.
The key initiatives for FY2025 are to further enhance public safety, ensure a cleaner city, and improve customer service in departments such as the building department, where new software, additional personnel and a new workspace are in the works. For our water and wastewater utilities infrastructure, we are in the midst of completing massive injection well projects that will end the disposal of treated wastewater into the ocean. We’ll continue expanding the sewer system, and we’ll continue upgrading the city’s stormwater system as our region experiences heavier rainfalls and higher water tables. Lots of long-term funding is needed in these areas of public utilities and we work to secure state and federal grants to help us with financing opportunities.
We are breaking ground on our new Police Headquarters soon and we’ll be adding more speed tables and other traffic calming measures
to slow down speeding cars. We are continuing to invest more in housing affordability programs, neighborhood infrastructure, renewing parks, environmental resiliency and more. We have many roadway resurfacing, street lighting, and sidewalk improvement projects underway. We are planting more trees and installing new landscaping to continue beautifying our city’s thoroughfares.
These are exciting times for Hollywood. We will be entering our City's centennial year in 2025, celebrating 100 years of Hollywood in better financial health, with a future for Hollywood that is physically safer, operationally better, environmentally more sustainable, economically stronger, and visually more appealing.
We are well on our way to provide a resilient and sustainable city that nurtures quality living and fosters a healthy environment where everyone can prosper. Thank you for joining us on this mission.
Yours always,
Josh Levy
