Now is an unbelievable time to sell. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for properties. Inventory is low, multiple offers are prevalent and selling for higher than asking price is the current norm in a lot of instances.

Time for a Christmas Truce
D
ecember 24, 1914 was the date of one of the most improbable acts of collective goodwill and fellowship in history. German soldiers conspired with their British and French opponents to declare an informal ceasefire along the Western Front of World War One. After five months of the worst carrange in human history, rank and file soldiers declared what would later be called “The Christmas Truce.” The truce began when groups of soldiers sang Christmas Carols from their trenches. These carols were answered, in turn, by songs from the enemy. Soon, arrangements were made to recover bodies from the “no man’s land” between the opposing forces. This led to interactions between the forces, ending, believe it or not, with gift exchanges and even a soccer match. We often focus on the things that divide us in the modern world. Social media and political journalism highlight differences and frequently induce anger, jealousy, and rage. Next time you find yourself in a fit of anger or a divisive rant, think of the soldiers on the Western Front. Those poor souls, who’s life expectancies were measured in days, not years, found common ground with the very people who were trying to kill them. Maybe, this holiday season we can do the same. Happy Holidays!

SUN Credit Union 75 Years of Putting Our Members First S
eventy-Five years ago, eleven Hollywood workers were not happy with the service they received from local banks. They decided to do something about it. Each of them contributed $5 to found the first credit union in the city and now the only financial institution headquartered in Hollywood. This not-for-profit credit union began with a simple idea: put their members’ needs first. Sun Credit Union has changed a lot over the years, but it has always put its members’ best interests at heart. Sun Credit Union is a financial institution that is owned by its members, not shareholders. Traditionally, they offer loans with lower interest rates, and provide higher rates on savings, with fewer and lower fees than banks.
Big-City Services in a SmallTown Atmosphere “We offer big-city services in a smalltown atmosphere” said President & CEO Patrick Mason, “Sun Credit Union is very active in the community. We also offer financial education both on-line and in-person”.
Like its much-larger competitors, Sun Credit Union offers its members online banking and mobile banking apps. They also offer a full suite of consumer services including auto loans, mortgages, credit cards, home equity loans, and much more. The employees in their two locations treat everyone who walks through the door like a family member. This focus on warm member service comes as no surprise. CEO Mason, has a background in both finance and human resources.
Members Come First “We follow the ‘golden rule’ by treating all members with professionalism, honesty and courtesy.” In addition to traditional savings accounts and loan programs, Sun Credit Union also offers unique solutions that members have specifically asked for. For instance, they offer small-dollar-amount mortgages and used-car financing that functions similar to a leasing program. Whether you are looking for your first home, a new car or a vacation at the lake, Sun Credit Union can help.

othing will get you in the holiday spirit like Hollywood’s Candy Cane Parade. The annual celebration features dozens of floats, marching bands, and revelry. EDUCATION BEYOND THE SCHOOL WALLS: Media Literacy in the Private Early Childhood Arena By Julia Yaremchuk, M.S. Education, Program Director for Sunshine State Academy
T
he early childhood private sector education has a myriad of variations when it comes to choices for parents and the education of children. Programs such as Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilio, STEM and call them ‘basic daycare,’ can be seen in every major corner of most major cities. Some of these programs are accredited, others follow the primary guidelines of the Department of Children and Families within each state or municipality. Early childhood education has had major gains in research and promotion on the needs of early intervention and impact that it has on reading, language, and school success. However, there is lack of interest on the topic of media literacy and the appropriate technology usage for young learners. Parents, educators, and program directors are at times oblivious on the impact that technology may have on the physical, emotional and psychological effect and affect on children. As a program director of a preschool and elementary school: kindergarten to grade 3; the topic of media literacy, technology appropriateness and media education has not been so relevant, as it has become the forefront topic in every home and classroom due to the Covid-19 crises. Media literacy (or lack there off) in the early childhood arena began long before Covid-19 was even in the picture. The car ride to and from school cannot be managed, as stated by most of my parents, without a child holding a technological device in his or her hands, as they point their fingers to maneuver through the singing text, videos, and games along the highway. In the classroom, content is explained through images as well via resources in the media. It is a blessing that the American Academy of Pediatrics has upheld a strong position in the fight against media influence on the brains of young children, advising no screen time before the age of 2 years old. However, as pointed out by Jordan Shapiro in his Forbes article, “Here is the AAP’S revised guidelines on children and screen time: Media is just another environment” (2015), which changes the stance on the outlook on how technology is used today. Four years later in 2019, Steven Reinberg disclosed in his WebMD article, “a new study using brain scans showed that the white matter in the brains of children who spent hours in front of the screen wasn’t developing as fast as it was in the brains of kids who didn’t.” The author, as well,
emphasizes that the loss of social interactions and technological over-usage brings about dysfunction in social engagement, cognitive behavior, and mental processing speed. During the Covid-19 crisis, the brick-andmortar schoolhouse was transcribed to the virtual platform of online learning. Early childhood centers mandated to close their doors for some time, panicked to begin online instruction and/or totally closed shop. In the midst of the unknown, many directors, like myself began planning and researching how to make online learning age-appropriate, how to integrate useful applications for online learning and develop media education policies overall. In this review of pertinent online resources, the following will be addressed: the campaign for a commercial-free childhood (ccfc)- The Guide to Choosing Tech for Young preschoolers; the Center of Media Literacy- An Overview & Orientation Guide to Media Literacy Education; the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE)- Core Principles of Media Literacy Education in the United States and finally an outlook from a different country, Canada’s Center for Digital and Media Literacy-
Mapping Digital Literacy and Practice. Each resource chosen will allow implementation of changes within my current center on the policies and practices. The ccfc allows for considerations to be made to choose appropriate preschool apps for children, which can be a resource for parents and teachers alike. The Media Lit, Literacy Review allows from theory to practice overview on how to appraise media and what questions educators should have upon choosing resources. NAMLE focuses on the inquiry and critical thinking components in media literacy review. Finally, the MediaSmarts site allows for an overview on implementation in Canadian schools, thoroughly assessing the ever-changing practices of media within the classroom and at home. more information: ▸ For cindy@sunshinestateacademy.com

Art & Culture Center/Hollywood to Expand By Jon Duka
T
he thriving arts community in Hollywood is getting an extreme home makeover! As part of the City of Hollywood’s vision to increase arts programming in our city, the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood will expand its current Kagey Home facility with the construction of a new, 5,400-square-foot arts education wing that will be distinct and contemporary. The Center has presented contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances, and award-winning education programs in the visual and performing arts. It was founded in 1975 as the only visual arts non-profit organization
in south Broward County, operating out of a small community space on Hollywood beach. The Center now manages visual arts galleries in the Kagey Home, which was built in 1924, the Arts School that is adjacent to the main facility, and a 500-seat theater in Hollywood’s burgeoning downtown. The new wing will provide visual arts and multimedia studio classrooms, along with a multi-purpose room for dance, drama, artist talks, film screenings, meeting space and more. This building will be a visual marquee in Downtown Hollywood drawing residents and visitors in our region to the Center. Additionally, the new
education building incorporates an outdoor courtyard to enhance the visitor experience. The dramatic design will merge with the existing two-story, 1924 Mediterranean Revival architecture of the Kagey Home, which houses the Center galleries and administrative offices. Construction is targeted to begin in Fall 2022. When completed, the new wing, with its gleaming façade and swooping rooftop, will provide the Center and the City with a unique architectural distinction in Broward County of having adjoining, functional spaces built nearly 100 years apart.

ress up as a superhero, put on your running shoes, and hit the road! The 18th Annual KID Hero 5K is set for January 29th at Vista View Park in Davie. The familyfriendly run/walk will raise funds for Kids In Distress (KID) and is much more than your average road race. Participants are encouraged to release their inner superhero by dressing up in their best costume solo or as a team! The day will also include a “Smallville” Kids Fun Run and Fun Zone, Gotham tent, a Power-Up Breakfast and family-friendly entertainment. All funds raised from the race will benefit Kids in Distress. KID has been carrying out our mission to prevent child abuse, preserve the family, and treat children who have been abused and/or neglected for more than 42 years. They manage a five-acre multiple program campus in Fort Lauderdale and a four-acre campus in Southwest Ranches, that includes two family foster group homes. KID’s services include individual, family, and group therapy and counseling; preschool, aftercare and summer camp programs; recruitment, training, and support of foster/adoptive homes; and prevention, reunification, family preservation and maternal and child health services. The race starts at 7:30 am sharp! There are also virtual race options for everyone to participate, even if you can’t make it.

“Christmas Near the Beach”
Brings the Christmas to Young Circle By Jon Duka
I
n 2007 Mickey and Deena McDaniel decided to put together a Christmas Party for Hollywood and surrounding areas. They called the small event Christmas on the Beach. The part was well received and became an annual event. In fact, after several years of great success, it became clear that they needed a larger venue.
“In 2007, my husband came to me and asked me to put together a Christmas Party,” said Deena McDaniel, co-founder of the event, “In six weeks, the show was literally thrown together... We’ve since grown from a few hundred to over six thousand in our audiences.” The larger audiences forced a move for the FREE show to the Arts Park at Young Circle,
and a name change for the event to Christmas Near the Beach. This year’s show will start at 4:00 pm. The show is open to all and free of charge. Every year the stage floods with local talent! Artists donate their gifts blessing South Florida! AND, of course, a visit from St. Nick’s will highlight the night. Keeping in with the South Florida theme, children watch Santa arrive in a classic red car with a surfboard led in by a rousing marching band! He then takes the stage to visit the live Nativity scene, where he honors the wiggly energetic and sometimes not so silent, “Baby Jesus,” presenting him with the very first gift. After his arrival, Santa will spend time in “St. Nick’s Beach House” where kids are welcomed to tour his living room and head over to his sleigh for a free photo and chat with the jolly ole guy himself. Throughout the night the stage will display amazingly talented artists. Bands, dancers, and even a rollerblading Grinchy are set to perform! “Christmas On The Beachside,” an original song written and performed by Nashville recording artist Austin Adamec has brought the crowd to its feet every year.
▸
Christmas Near the Beach will be held from 4:00 pm till 9:00 pm on December 11, 2021 at the Arts Park at Young Circle on Hollywood Boulevard. For more info visit www.christmasnearthebeach. com or call 573-280-8486.

SCHOOL NEWS
BCPS School Choice Applications
Accepted Through February 1, 2022
S
chool-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 1.
School Choice By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students. Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by completing a School Choice Application during the application window. School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the
School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.
How To Apply There are three alternative options available for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 8. Parents will be notified if their child was selected on March 3, 2022. If selected, they must contact their child’s new school and enroll by March 11 or that seat will be vacated. If a child’s application was not awarded, parents can apply for another School Choice option or remain in that school’s applicant pool and register the child at his/her assigned school.

Debra Hixon Honored
ommunity luminaire and champion in education Debra ‘Debbi’ Hixon is to be honored at the Publix Super Markets Charities 2021 “Hall of Fame” Awards. Debra ‘Debbi’ Hixon is a 32-year nationally certified teacher in Broward County and serves as a countywide Broward County School Board member, Seat 9. Born and raised in Hollywood, Debbi attended Hollywood Hills Elementary, Olsen Middle, and graduated from South Broward High School (SBHS), class of 1984. She credits Mrs. Gloria McIntosh (Ms. Mac), her 10th-grade biology teacher, with making an indelible, positive influence on her life. An engaging teacher who was tough, fair, and supportive and with an honest, realistic, and refreshing perspective, Ms. Mac inspired Debbi to become an environmental advocate and her influence molded Debbi into the popular science teacher she became.
While at SBHS, they formed a relationship that continued throughout college and into Debbi’s student teaching semester, when Ms. Mac was her supervising teacher. Ms. Mac taught her how to take a different approach to reaching all students and write comprehensive and engaging lesson plans along with advice to have an extra pair of flats handy (“roller skates”) for long lab days. Debbi calls Ms. Mac “the standard that all science teachers should be measured by.” Prior to South Broward, Debbi taught science and was a swim coach at Blanche Ely High School, where she sponsored numerous science-based clubs. As magnet coordinator of the Maritime/ Marine Science and Technology Program, she connected students with maritime organizations, providing hands-on experiences through field trips, summer camps and internships. She created a Career Launch Competition with the MIASF, providing a platform for students to win scholarships and internships. As a teacher and mother of a special needs student, Debbi is on the Parent and Community Involvement Task Force where she helped plan
and implement BCPS’s Parent University, introducing new teaching methods and technologies to enhance virtual school experiences during the pandemic. Her primary goal and motivation are to keep schools safe, expand mental health support for students and staff, provide teachers and support staff with adequate pay and the resources they need to help students succeed, and build open and positive relationships between schools and communities. Debbi is president of the Chris Hixon Athletic Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to the memory of her husband, the Stoneman Douglas High School athletic director. Debbi serves on the Stand With Parkland board, a national association advocating for practical public safety reforms focused on the safety of children and staff at school, improved mental health support and responsible firearms ownership. She is vice president of 4FNOW, which partners with local law enforcement to host voluntary gun buyback programs. Debbi graduated from Florida State University double majoring in biology and education.

THIS YEAR’S HOLLYWOOD MARINA
Cardboard Boat Race
I
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
n 2008, The Cardboard Boat Race in Hollywood was created to bring the community together for a fun family-friendly event while showcasing the City of Hollywood Marina’s facility and amenities. The festivities were initially organized by the marina staff, but within three years the race grew, and the Hollywood Special Events team was brought in to share the responsibility while the Marina then transitioned to become a division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. The annual event at the Hollywood Marina continues to grow due to the support of participation from many community organizations, increased promotion for the event to outside agencies, schools and community groups, conservationists, activists, public figures, and of course, boat-loving residents. During the first 3-4 hours, participants got into the competitive spirit by constructing a boat out of cardboard on-site for their team. They may also be constructed off-site, but competitors find it more exciting to design, construct, paint, and name their

vessels with their fellow mates all in an effort to win the title in the many fun categories. But it’s the coveted trophy that everyone paddles for. “It doesn’t take long for wet cardboard to sink, but with expertly applied duct tape in strategic locations, crews can make a sea-worthy vessel float just long enough to make their way around the aqua course,” explained Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Communications Manager. “The Cardboard Boat Race is a fantastic community event that brings friends and families, area schools, clubs and organizations, and land lovers together for an exciting day of good-natured racing competition on the water,” added Hussey. THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

By Mayor Josh Levy
Fellow Hollywood Residents: With the 2021 holiday season in full swing, I hope this December edition of Our City - Hollywood, finds you and your families safe and healthy. Last year’s holiday season was significantly hindered by the pandemic, so this year’s holiday season will be that much more meaningful for many of us. Our state and county Covid-19 numbers are thankfully the lowest they have been since the start of the pandemic, so holiday travel is back, and families and friends are getting together again. That is really great, because one of the things we learned from the personal isolation that the pandemic brought upon us, is that human interaction is important for our well being. It is fun to be together with other people, and the human spirit needs that. So let’s make it a point to get together, rekindle friendships, make new friends and spread goodwill to one another this holiday season. In Hollywood, like in other cities, there are many ways to nurture and create new, meaningful relationships: by attending services, classes and get-togethers at one of our many houses of worship; by going for walks on the Hollywood beach broadwalk; by enjoying the live music shows at the beach bandshell (free, 7-9pm Wednesdays thru Sundays); getting involved in your children’s school, and more. Another great way to add fulfilling relationships to our lives is to become active in one of Hollywood’s great service clubs, such as the Rotary Club of Hollywood, the Hollywood Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club of Hollywood and more. These clubs meet weekly or monthly, break bread, host interesting speakers, conduct community service projects together, and more, but best of all, is the friendships that being a club member makes possible. Joining your neighborhood civic association is also great, as is volunteering at a local nonprofit, joining organizations such as the Hollywood Historical Society, the Friends of Stirling Road Library, and more. Look for these clubs on social media or online, and attend one their meetings. It’ll be fun. As for city government, we continue to work on all the needs of our city. From repairing roads and alleys, repairing and replacing sidewalks, improving our parks, working to improve our city stormwater system, replacing water-mains, economic development and more, your city workforce is hard at work on our behalf. Our public safety departments also continue to protect and serve. 2021 was an especially difficult year for our police department, with the loss of three heroes whom we will never forget, Detective Jon Cooke, Officer Yandy Chirino, and Lieutenant John Graham. Each of them were brave officers whose backgrounds and stories represent all that is great about our country and our city. We will forever owe them our gratitude and hold them in a place of honor. I wish you and your family a joyful and meaningful holiday season. We have a lot to be thankful for. Sincerely,
Josh Levy
