here were plenty of smooches for all the pooches at the second annual “Be Mine” Dog Show on Valentine’s Day weekend at the Stan Goldman “Hollywoof” Dog Park. The Hollywood Council of Civic Associations (HCCA) presented the canine celebration of puppy love once again with the Hollywood Department of Parks & Recreation, The Hollywood Police Department, and Knights of Columbus Council 4851. Hollywood residents were invited with their beloved furry four-legged friends to participate in the paws-itively perfect event on a beautiful South Florida day. This year’s distinguished panel of judges were animal lovers and activists: Rochelle Liederman; Hollywood Resident, Dog Sitting by Missy, Tommy Pinder; Hollywood Code Compliance Officer, Joe Schneider; Hollywood resident, Attorney, Donna O’Keefe; Hollywood Resident, and Michelle Lazarow; Hallandale Beach Commissioner, a leader in the fight against puppy mills. Public officials present for this puppy palooza were Hollywood Vice-Mayor/ Commissioner District 3, Traci Callari, Hollywood Commissioner District 2, Peter Hernandez, Hollywood Commissioner District 4, Richard Blattner, Hollywood Commissioner District 6, Linda Sherwood, Hollywood Commissioner District 7, Kevin Biederman, Broward County Commissioner District 6, Beam Furr, Hallandale Beach Commissioner, Michelle Lazarow, and Hallandale Beach

Commissioner, Keith London. The three hour event, organized again by Nancy Fowler, was open to the public for free, with entries at just $5 per event/per dog. Raffles were available to win pet gift baskets, and ribbons were awarded for the top three in each category. Brewer was a Hollywood resident for over 50 years and an activist for an open and responsible city government. He was a staunch supporter of top quality neighborhood schools and a leader in neighborhood beautification projects. His goal was for all children regardless of economic status to receive an excellent education. Brewer passed away in October 2015 and this furry fundraiser will now be an annual event to keep his memory alive fur-ever. It Takes a Super Hero to Help Those with Paralysis BY BEVERLY PERKINS

he Memorial Foundation received a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation late last year. The grant will be used to purchase adaptive cycling equipment for the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute. The dollars received will purchase two specially equipped bicycles that will enable those with paralysis to remain active and exercise through an adaptive cycling program which is known to improve the individual’s physical and emotional well-being. The grant was one of 79 awarded by the Reeve Foundation - totaling nearly $576,000 - to nonprofit organizations nationwide that provide opportunities, access, and daily quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, their families, and caregivers. Conceived by the late Dana Reeve, the program has awarded more than 2,700 grants Jimmy Crews worth more than $20 million since 1999. The $7,384 award given to the Memorial Foundation will buy an upright handcycle and a tandem cycle that will be available for use by those living with paralysis. One lucky recipient will be Jimmy Crews. Crews overcame traumatic injuries at the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute and used cycling as a large part of his recovery process. “This funding will make it possible for more people in our area to exercise and participate in the activities of the Handcycle Club,” said Rayford Shipman, manager of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation program at the Memorial

Rehabilitation Institute. “We know that being active leads to significant improvement in an individual’s physical and mental state and having these bikes available will enable our participants to enjoy the fresh air and camaraderie of those overcoming similar challenges.” Awarded twice yearly, grant requests were evaluated and scored based on a rigorous review process to determine funding for organizations that improve daily life for those living with paralysis, as well as their families and caregivers. In this particular grant cycle, the grantee review board awarded a significant number of grants in medically underserved areas for modification projects, animal service programs and veteran programs. “Accessibility modifications and service animals help create greater independence both in home and public settings, which is key to increase inclusion in the community,” said Donna Valente, director of Quality of Life Grants. “By supporting these types of programs in underserved areas, we are able to remove barriers to independent living for individuals living with disabilities and their families.” To learn more or make a donation, call (954) 265-3454 or (800)539-7309 and/or visit www.mhsfoundation.org. or www. he start of 2017 has been great as The Art and Culture Center / Hollywood held its most successful fundraiser to date. The 9th Annual “Hot Bollywood Glam” event raised nearly $37,000 for the Center’s arts program. The Bollywood theme could not be more suitable for local community members to come out and exhibit their extravagant wardrobes and generous spirits. Approximately 270 people attended the themed soiree dressed in glamourous Bollywood style. Temple Solel is Always Doing Their Part to Make the World a Better Place BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ikkun Olam is a Jewish concept which defines acts of kindness performed to perfect or repair the world, and to assist those who may be at a disadvantage. Although Temple Solel in Hollywood always has ongoing projects to help others, they declared a specific day eleven years ago to gather congregants of all ages to fulfill the action of mitzvoh (performing good deeds). Since its inception, “Mitzvah Day” has accomplished numerous charitable efforts at the synagogue, in the community, and around the world. These projects have included landscaping, painting, organizing, and cleaning. They also collected, sorted, and donated clothing and household items to those in need, made bag lunches for the local homeless shelter, as well as shelach manot (gifts of food and drink) baskets for seniors. Additionally, they have raised awareness and funds for Jewish and secular causes that needed funding such as Neve Michael Children’s Village, a home for abused and neglected children in Israel and Magen David Adom, Israel’s affiliate to the Red Cross. They also contributed to purchasing Lifestraws. These tiny water filter straws purify drinking water in parts of the world where there is no potable water. At the helm of all the wonderful projects is Stephanie Jofe. She has been organizing “Mitzvah Day” from the very beginning. Six years ago, she knew it was time to take their “show” on the road and help organizations in the community with larger needs than their own. Since Rabbi Emeritus, Robert Frazen, Temple Solel

has had a long-standing relationship with the Liberia community in Hollywood, they decided to begin there. From refurbished playgrounds and reorganizing food pantries to installing butterfly gardens, and wheelchair friendly gardening beds, there seems to be no task this committee can’t handle. This year in conjunction with Temple Solel’s “Go Green” efforts, “Mitzvah Day” was held at TY Park. Approximately 200 volunteers came out and painted murals, a fence, and a building, assembled picnic tables with benches, landscaped, and planted orchids in trees as part of Fairchild Tropical Garden’s Million Orchid Project. They also filled backpacks with cards, friendship bracelets and donated toiletries for homeless children at the Broward Outreach Center (BOC), and collected and sorted 17 large bags of donated clothing, also for BOC. “Mitzvah Day has really grown over the years from a small effort to help our synagogue to a much larger effort to apply our Jewish values of tzedakah and mitzvot to help our larger community,” says Jofe, Co-Tikkun Olam Committee Chair. “We are currently looking for a project for next year, so community organizations in need of a facelift should contact us for further information.” To find out more about Temple Solel’s Tikkun Olam Committee, or to ask for assistance for your organization, please email shrinkmom@kidbones.com.

The Talented 10th Poetry Open Mic Night Was a Grand Slam COMMUNITY NEWS

n honor of Black History month, The City of Hollywood African American Advisory Council, in partnership with the Community Development Division, Barry University Center for Community Service Initiatives, Liberia Economic and Social Development, Inc. and AT&T Pioneers invited local high school students to participate in “The Talented 10th Poetry Slam” at the Hollywood City Hall in late February. The Black History Month Theme for 2017 was “The Crisis in Black Education”. The two-night spoken word competition gave students the opportunity to recite their original poems with a focus on the topic of “Education” as part of the larger program to celebrate Black History Month. Students had to write poems on the significant topic and submit for approval prior to the event. They then needed to be prepared to recite their creation during the events. Each presentation could be no longer than 3 minutes, and could consist of 1-4 persons. The Master of Ceremonies were Donovan Campbell; WSVN Sports and Jason Jackson; Miami Heat Broadcaster & Sideline Reporter. Each evening began with a reception catered by New Jerusalem Baptist Church and Greater Mount Zion AME Church. Attendees were led in “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by City of Hollywood Assistant Planner, Deandrea Moise.

Barry University Center for Community Service Initiatives provided lectures by Dr. Velmarie L. Albertini on “The History of Education in the Black Community” and by Dr. Phyllis Scott on “Educating for the New Workplace”. The event brought out the most talented students who did not disappoint with their powerful and well-crafted works of spoken art. The first place winner on the night one was Nicholas Jentcszh of Hollywood Hills High School. He created a piece that adhered to the educational theme with spiritual and emotional overtones. On the second night there was a tie between Erika Demetrius of Hollywood Hills High School and Fenia St. Charles of Miami Lakes Educational Center. Poems were judged on multiple criteria in areas of the actual poem, the interpretation, and the performance. The winners received a “Kindle Tablet” courtesy of Liberia Economic and Social Development and AT&T Pioneers. “Each student mesmerized the attendees with their poetic skills and well thought out pieces,” stated Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Public Information Manager. “The kids received much more than a device, the slam experience allowed area poets to perform their craft to an audience of the Faith community, Government Sector, Non-Profit Organizations and Private Sector attendees.”

Hollywood Boardwalk Walkathon to Fight Depression Got Many Moving BY BEVERLY PERKINS

t was an early morning on Hollywood Beach a couple of months ago, when Get Moving, Inc. had their very first walkathon. The morning sun had just come up, and the boardwalk was lively and full of activity as individuals were enjoying the South Florida weather. Marissa Stiberman, CEO of Get Moving, Inc., organized the event. Stiberman is an immigration attorney, pattern maker for the industry, and a spin instructor. Marissa Stiberman, Recently, she completed CEO Get Moving, Inc. the curriculum for living in Landmark Education. The forum is designed to bring about positive permanent shifts in the quality of one’s life. As part of her program completion, she had to develop a not-for-profit project to benefit the greater good for the Self Expression and Leadership course. The idea for her project was a labor of love as she created Get Moving, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation with a mission to create awareness on the positive impact that exercise has on depression. According to the Mayo Clinic, research on anxiety, depression and exercise show that the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can help reduce anxiety and improve mood. Regular exercise releases feel-good brain chemicals

including endorphins, neurotransmitters, and endocannabinoids, which help ease depression. “Get Moving’s goal is to promote physical activity and its impact on depression, as there is widespread documented scientific evidence proving that regularly engaging in vigorous physical activity releases endorphins, the “feel good” hormones that generate feelings of well-being and elation,” says Stiberman. “Being physically active is not only healthy for the body, but it is also healthy for the mind.” Stiberman enlisted the help of other individuals in the fitness industry who had a positive response to her venture. Kaisa Kerwin, owner of The Fit Shop of North Miami and Fort Lauderdale led the walkathon participants in stretching exercises prior to the one hour, 2.4 mile walk, which began at Charnow Park. She also donated raffle prizes worth $260. Other fitness fanatics who showed their support were Pola Mochon, owner of Powerumba Fitness of North Miami and Martin del Villar, Powerumba instructor extraordinaire. In addition to attending the event, they donated $420 worth of raffle prizes. Flywheel Sports also gave a generous donation for spinning classes worth $130. Marisa Stiberman turned her vision into a reality, and the first Get Moving, Inc. walkathon was a success. She plans to organize others throughout the year. Say Cheese! McArthur Students Learn Pizza Making Skills at Local Restaurant SCHOOL NEWS

cArthur High School Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, Eileen Santiago always likes to provide real-world experiences for her students. Her goal as an educator is to teach math, reading, science, social studies and social skills beyond the classroom. Over the past couple of years she has developed relationships with various businesses in Hollywood. One of these local establishments is Tony the Pizza Chef II in Hollywood. Pizza Chef II owners, Edlira and Naim Shabani, have always been generous community partners. In the past, they donated all the ingredients for a school ‘Top Chef’ competition, taught students how to make pizza, and recently invited Santiago’s students into

their restaurant where they serve classic New York style pies, salads, hot and cold subs, and Italian pasta dishes. Santiago’s 9th and 10th grade students were able to open the pizza parlor, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what it is like to operate a restaurant. The morning began with assembling pizza boxes while the ovens warmed up. Shabani then instructed the class on how to make the dough and how to place the toppings. After their creations were ready, they lined up to pay for their orders. The hands-on experience allowed them to practice their social and money skills. “Working with Tony the Pizza Chef has helped me as a teacher bring real-life experiences into the class-

room,” says Santiago. “My students not only learn, but have fun working on social and daily living skills. These fun activities mean everything to them.” In addition, to visiting this Italian eatery, students have also taken community based instruction trips to other Hollywood restaurants such as Ends Meat, Que Perros, Froots, and Gino’s Italian Market. As part of their project, they will create a recipe book. Santiago created “Hollywood’s Top Chef” project at Hollywood Park Elementary a couple of years ago after being awarded a grant from the Broward Education Foundation and the City of Hollywood. The program was such a success that she was able to take on a disseminator role at the Teacher Expo, where she presented her idea to more than 400 teachers. She was given the capability to award more than 15 teachers with a $400 grant allowing them to adapt this project to fit their classroom needs. Fortunately, she was able to have her new students at McArthur High participate in their own “Top Chef” competition just last month. The recipe for successful learning is simple: Take one top-notch teacher, mix with special boys and girls, add a dash of community help, and a heaping sprinkle of love.

Colbert Museum Magnet School Celebrated Black History Month BY BEVERLY PERKINS

pon return from winter break, the halls have not been quiet at Colbert Museum Magnet School. Teachers, administrators and students began preparation for their big production to honor Black History Month under the direction of their music teacher, Jacques Durand Jr. This year’s program, “They Are the Past, We Are the Future”, was designed to educate students on the many contributions of African American’s in our society, and to inspire students to achieve greatness through knowing the strides African American’s made. Many were eager to be involved in the showcase. Over 100 students, kindergartners through the fifth grade classes, participated in this year’s show which was hosted by two outstanding fifth grade students. Each grade level had the opportunity to show off their ability and talent in an age appropriate designed number. Performances ranged from song and dance to poetry reading and skits.

Kindergarten students performed an authentic song from Zimbabwe called “Shosholoza”, which means moving forward. First graders sung “This Little Light of Mine”, while the second grade recited information on prominent figures in African American History. In addition to reciting poetry, third grade students sung the Marvin Gaye classic, “What’s Going On?” The fourth grade created a living wax museum on stage by dressing up as

prominent figures in African American History. The show closed with the fifth graders delivering spine chilling poetry during a protest skit where students dressed the part and even carried signs. This final performance was followed by two students reciting a speech by Michelle and Barrack Obama. The Colbert Cougars drum line performed an up tempo African drum piece, and the dance team performed choreographed African dance and contemporary dance compositions. Performances weren’t limited to the children as teachers also got involved. Mr. Gilbert, Tech Specialist, performed “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong on the trumpet. “Overall, this program was a big success,” said Mr. Durand Jr. “The students had a great time performing, parents had a great time packing the school cafeteria in record numbers and cheering for their child.” “The Black History Program was undoubtedly an opportunity for our stakeholders to enrich their minds with regard to the legacy and prolific history of the African American community,” said Assistant Principal Dorsett McLeod. “The Colbert Family continuously strives to enhance our culture and provide students with opportunities to not only showcase their talents, but enable them to expand their knowledge daily. The show was an unforgettable teaching experience, and I am honored to have a school family that continuously contributes to our school’s vision becoming a reality.”

orning sickness. Weight gain. Skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. SPARK Hollywood is an event that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship for local startups, entrepreneurs, small businesses and inventors in Hollywood and South Florida. SPARK Hollywood will be held on Thursday, May 11th, 2017 at Hollywood’s ArtsPark. The event has three main objectives: (1) provide a competition for selected contestants to pitch their idea or invention to a panel of judges to win prizes; (2) provide an opportunity for start-ups to showcase their ideas, inventions and products during a “trade show” open to the public; and (3) provide an opportunity for early-stage entrepreneurs to learn about resources available in the City of Hollywood and the rest of the South Florida region while networking with potential investors and experts who may help start their ventures or grow existing endeavors. Tips and Skills for Happy, Successful Kids…And Grown-Ups

oes this sound familiar? Your child comes home from school and while sitting in the kitchen over a snack, you engage in a wonderful conversation about the school day. When you ask about the day’s homework, chaos erupts! Your child can’t remember the assignment details. You calmly ask if they were written down in the daily planner and receive the response that the planner has been lost for weeks, but all the information is on a scrap of paper somewhere. Your child is now frantically searching the backpack for that scrap of paper and your floor becomes littered with crumbled papers. You then remember that you can view homework on the school’s website. All will be well! But then no one (including you!) can remember how to log into the website. And this is not the first time. For many children (and many of us adults), organizational skills and time management pose huge obstacles. In education, we refer to these as executive functioning skills, which is defined as a set of processes that all have to do with managing one’s self and one’s resources in order to achieve a goal. (Cooper-Kahn and Dietzel) Here are some pointers to help your child develop executive functioning skills to set them up for success. ▸▸ Ask your child’s teacher to provide a pack up checklist for the end of each day, including: ▸▸ Did I write down my assignments? ▸▸ How long should it take to complete each item? ▸▸ ·Do I have the correct materials? ▸▸ child to cross off items as they are completed. ▸▸ Make sure your child knows how to log into the classroom’s web page, which should have a syllabus, homework and test dates. ▸▸ Establish a consistent routine and a neat physical space to complete homework at home. ▸▸ Keep school supplies on hand. ▸▸ Keep a timer available; cellphones have timers! ▸▸ Post a calendar for long-term assignments and create a timeline. ▸▸ Build in breaks: work/break/work/break. ▸▸ If writing is laborious for your child, encourage use of computer. ▸▸ Encourage reviewing and proofreading. ▸▸ Provide written reminders to place completed work into the appropriate folder in the backpack. ▸▸ Reinforce and praise effort. ▸▸ Place completed homework in the backpack, placed by the front door, ready for the morning. If assignments are digital, make sure your child has uploaded them or clicked “submit”. ▸▸ Encourage weekly backpack checks. Eliminate unnecessary items. ▸▸ Be sure not to over-program extracurricular activities. ▸▸ Make sure the whole family eats well and gets enough sleep. ▸▸ Stay calm. Your child follows your lead.
