Hurricane Season – A Time to be Prepared, Not Scared
I
f you’ve lived in South Florida for long enough, you’ve experienced your share of hurricane warnings, scares, and, unfortunately, storms. Last year, many of us boarded up our homes and prepared for the worst. We were lucky that Hurricane Matthew stayed just off the coast and spared us, but this year could be very different. Hurricane season officially lasts from June 1st until November 30th. According to the most recent forecasts, the 2017 Hurricane season should be about average, with a total of 11 named storms. Hurricane “season”, however, is not what causes billions of dollars of damage and threatens lives; it is that one big storm. There is little to no correlation between the number of severe storms in the Atlantic and the number of storms that reach landfall. We owe it to ourselves and to our families to make sure we are prepared. The Florida Department of Emergency Management recommends that every family prepare a hurricane kit and have an evacuation plan in place. You can visit www.floridadisaster.org/getaplan to create a personalized plan. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death.

It’s a Ruff Life - “Dog Dayz of Summer” is Back in Hallandale Beach COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
B
ack by popular demand by humans and four-legged friends alike, Hallandale Beach opens the seasonal program, “Dog Dayz of Summer”, again this year. City residents and non-residents are encouraged to bring their furry-faced loved ones out for some twilight time in the surf and on the sand. The City of Hallandale Beach created the canine friendly event based on the phrase, “Dog Days of Summer”. The well-known expression used to describe the hottest days and the sultry heat of the season, actually refers to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens. However, many still use the term to describe the South Florida summer months which is why it’s a “paws” itively perfect name for the event. During the day dogs are prohibited from the beaches, but this specific event allows dogs to enjoy a dip in the Atlantic on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month from Memorial Day through August at South City Beach Park, 1870 S. Ocean Drive, Hallandale Beach from 6:00-8:00pm. Certain rules and regulations do apply: ▸▸ Participants are limited to one dog per owner. ▸▸ Dogs must have current rabies tag. ▸▸ Dogs must be under control of owner at all times. ▸▸ Owner is responsible for waste cleanup. ▸▸ Unruly and aggressive dogs may be asked to leave. The daily fee is $5 for residents and $10 for non-
residents per dog. Summer passes are also available at $15 for residents and $30 for non-residents per dog. Fees must be paid in cash on-site or passes may be purchased prior to each event at the Cultural Community Center located at 410 SE Third Street, Hallandale Beach, Monday through Friday 8:00 am-6:00 pm. Parking is available at the North and South City Beach Park for $1.25 an hour. However, dogs are not allowed in the park, so owners must use the north sidewalk for access to the dog beach.
The City encourages animal lovers to come out and appreciate the “ruff” South Florida lifestyle. Just be sure to bring a doggie bag to help keep the beaches clean. For more information please visit www.hallandalebeach.org or call 954-457-1452. South City Beach Park – 1870 S. Ocean Drive Hallandale Beach – 6:00-8:00pm – DAILY FEE: $5 resident / $10 non-resident per dog - SUMMER PASS: $15 resident / $30 nonresident per dog Cash only onsite - Passes may be purchased prior to the event at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd St, Mon - Fri 8am-6:00pm.
Hollywood’s 4th Annual Salsa Fest Was Hot! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
ore than 6,000 people came out to the 4th annual Salsa Festival at ArtsPark in early spring. The creator and brainchild of the event is Downtown Hollywood’s CBA Realty & Management Corp. owner, Cristina D. Moinelo. “I have been in love with Hollywood since I moved my office here about 10 years ago,” says Moinelo. “As many know the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) and many other people in Hollywood have come together for the betterment of Hollywood. Since one of my hobbies is Salsa dancing and music, and I know what a vibrant community of salseros we have, I thought what an amazing venue we have to create an event.” At that moment 4 years ago, Moinelo not only put on her dancing shoes, but put on her thinking cap as she approached Melina Almodovar, South Florida’s very own “La Muñeca De La Salsa”. Almodovar is known as for her upbeat, charming and caring manner towards her fans. She has established herself in the past ten years as a champion for Salsa music and all it stands for: Latin culture, passion, celebration, dance and happiness. Moinelo also approached the well-followed Nelson Fritz who promotes Salsa events. Together the three amigos organized the first festival in which 2,000 people

attended proving that there is an audience in Downtown Hollywood and its surrounding areas. Since its inception the festival has grown exponentially and shows no sign of slowing down since there is a huge population of Latinos in Broward County. This year the event represented several Latin countries such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Colombia. It was hosted by Nelson Fritz Negro Fino and Jerry Santiago Hijo, and under the musical direction of Latin Grammy winner Chino Nuñez. DJs Danny and Puerto Rico’s Carmencita had the crowd going with great tunes. Special guests included Aymee Nuviola, Tito Puente Jr., Marlon Fernandez, and Michelle Brava. Nuevolution Dance Studio, Casa Salsa, CSM Dance Company, Salsa Heat Wave, Fernando Garcia and AfroCaribbean Cubaton came out to perform and showcase their schools. “For me it’s a true honor and pleasure to bring the salsa music and salsa dance culture I love to the city of Hollywood and South Florida,” said Melina Almodovar. “We are overwhelmed by the response. We thank all those salsa fans that were there to lend their support to our event, and we thank the city of Hollywood for believing in this amazing event.” “I certainly hope that the festival boosts business in Hollywood,” added Moincelo. “What started as three friends with a common interest is on its way to becoming an icon for the City of Hollywood!”

The Hollywood’s Women’s Club Speakeasy Spring Event Was Roaring! COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
ust last month, the Hollywood Women’s Club held their annual spring fundraising event. In honor of their 95th anniversary, the theme was a 1920s classic cocktail speakeasy. The sold-out event brought many dressed in their best era fashions to the National Historic Clubhouse. Flappers and gangsters came with plenty of boas, beads, hats, cigars and cigarettes as they were greeted by a 1929 Peerless Model 8-125 parked in front of the historic structure. This set the scene and provided a perfect photo opportunity to start the evening. In order to get into the “prohibition” party, guests had to give a secret password. Once inside, the venue was decorated in gold and black with period photographs adorning jewel-filled centerpieces. Guests loved the selfie photo booth and classic ring toss game where they were able to win sought after bottles of wine or liquor. A thirty item Chinese raffle also kept guests playing all night. Piano tunes of the era were played by pianist Fritzie Gaccione while signature drinks were served at the bar. These included classic Prohibition Era cocktails such as a Mary Pickford, Tom Collins, Gin Ricky, and Whiskey Sour. Provisions were provided by Club members including finger sandwiches, deviled eggs, pasta salad, meatballs, and an array of desserts. “It was a fabulous night, and we were able to raise much needed funds to support our ongoing community projects and the ongoing restoration of the Clubhouse,” said President Carol Fitzgerald. “Club members have volunteered over 6,000 hours in 2016. Recent cash donations have been made to The Community Enhancement Collaborative (CEC), Canine Companions, The Exceptional Theater Company Hollywood Stars Performance, Hacienda Girls Ranch and a collection drive providing 112 Easter Baskets to Childnet, the state’s
foster care agency, as well as clothing for the Nancy J. Cotterman Center. Funds also have been contributed to monthly movie and pizza nights at Broward Outreach, arts and crafts projects at Henderson Behavioral Healthcare, and continuing support for Hollywood Elementary Schools.” The GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club was founded in 1922, and is celebrating its 95th Anniversary in 2017. HWC is a 501©3 tax exempt, total volunteer organization with a culturally diverse membership of over 80 women. The Hollywood Women’s Club recently launched the Campaign for Tomorrow to raise funds for the continued restoration of its 1927 Historic Clubhouse. The focus is Accessibility * Safety * Functionality. The Hollywood Women’s Club is dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. They are also dedicated to the preservation of their beloved historic 1927 Clubhouse. The Clubhouse functions as a center for community, social, educational and fundraising events and is available for rentals. New members are always welcome. Hollywood Residents Are in the Spotlight BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
s the school year came to a close, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts honored its volunteers who donate their time to one of the largest artsin-education programs in the United States, which serves more than 150,000 students annually. Fort Lauderdale resident Thomas Holt was named “Education Volunteer of the Year” in appreciation of his exemplary merit and volunteering for the Broward Center. “Thomas works wonderfully with children and his heart and soul is really dedicated to Student Enrichment through the Arts (SEAS),” said Broward Center SEAS Director George Longobardi. “He is always willing to do what is necessary to help the program succeed.” Hollywood residents, Rose Sazant and Jean Dorto were also recognized for their dedication and work. Sazant has been volunteering at the Broward Center for 7 years, but this was her first year as a SEAS volunteer. She had been fascinated with the theatre since she was a youngster. So naturally when she retired in 2010, she decided that ushering at the Center was a perfect way to spend her time. If she’s not helping people to their seats, she can be found at the Stirling Road Branch Library where she also volunteers. “I enjoy volunteering at the Broward Center because it’s wonderful to work with children and see them introduced to the arts,” says Sazant. “I love the arts and learn a lot from the various conversations I have with my fellow volunteers because they all come from Photo Credit David Muir

different backgrounds.” Many of the programs are presented in partnership with Broward County Public Schools. Among those attending the luncheon to thank the volunteers were School Board members Laurie Rich Levinson, Chief School Performance and Accountability Officer Dr. Valerie Wanza, Director of Elementary Education Dr. Nicole Mancini and Director of Activities and Sports Shawn Cerra. In another collaboration with Broward County Public Schools, students from the culinary arts department of McFatter Technical College prepared and served the Rose Sazant and Jean Dorto of Hollywood food for the 110 volunteers and guests who attended the luncheon held in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center. Eleven year old student Arianna Pereira, who attends classes at the Rose Miniaci Education Center, performed for the guests. Volunteering for the Broward Center’s programs for school children is perfect for retired educators and parents who want to remain involved in shaping students’ lives. Union Institute & University Celebrated National Library Week COMMUNITY NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n early spring the Union Institute & University together with the American Library Associatiozn (ALA) celebrated National Library Week. The nationally observed week, sponsored by the ALA and many libraries across the country, recognizes all the contributions made by library staff and other dedicated professionals who make quality outreach possible in their communities. The annual event started 59 years ago to encourage reading when research showed that Americans were spending more time watching televisions, listening to the radio, and playing musical instruments and less time reading books. The theme for 2017, “Libraries Transform” truly represents what Union Institute & University offers its students. The collection includes 450,000 e-books, and millions of theses and doctoral dissertations from universities worldwide including over 5,000 dissertations produced by UI&U students is available to students. The library provides access to a growing collection of more than 60,000 electronic fulltext periodicals via 150+ online licensed research databases.
One addition is OneSearch, a comprehensive search engine that allows students to search multiple databases simultaneously. “OneSearch allows students a more efficient way to search the contents of the UI&U Library. This powerful tool enables users to conduct a single search that yields results that include e-books, scholarly articles, doctoral dissertations, videos, and more,” said Matthew Pappathan, director of Union’s Library Services. “Also new is the “Welcome to the UI&U Library” video. Each student receives this brief, five-minute video that introduces them to the various services available, ranging from formatted citations to tutorials to librarian assistance. New tutorials have been added such as search strategies that give helpful tips on keyword searching. We have also recently updated the look of the library website.” “The benefits of the Union Institute & University Library are designed to serve our adult students,” said Dr. Roger H. Sublett, President of Union Institute & University. “Not only is the library fully online and available to students 24/7, 365 days a year, but it is constantly updating resources to provide the best possible options

11 Hollywood 2016, Alex Alex Bruno, Hollywood Agent RE/MAX Agent, Bruno, is is True Example The American Dream AA True Example ofof The American Dream ##
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
After only being in the states for fifteen years, Bruno achieved the American dream. This kind of accomplishment shows how his work ethic, persistence, endurance, and determination are what set him apart from others. The strong qualities are also what have made the bi-lingual realtor a multimillion dollar producer. As the top producer at RE/MAX 5 Star Realty, Bruno is currently a Top 1% Selling RE/MAX real estate owner/agent in South Florida and Number #1 in the City of Hollywood. Additionally, he also has an impressive collection of accolades proving his unparalleled service to all clients in the Broward and Miami-Dade real estate markets. Recently, Alex Bruno took the time to answer a few questions about the local real estate market and how he handles his business.
How long have you been in real estate? I have
been a licensed real estate agent with RE/MAX for 12 years.
Are you a buyers’ agent or a sellers’ agent? I have handled both sides of the transactions, so I can confidently say I’m knowledgeable as both.
What is your primary area to buy/sell homes, and the one you know best? Of course, the City
of Hollywood, and communities such as Hollywood Hills and Hollywood Lakes. However, while fully dedicated to my local clients and my commitment to Hollywood, the surrounding communities are just as great.
One of my goals is to increase price values since Hollywood is close to cities such as Golden Beach, Golden Isles, Sunny Isles Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. I still believe the City of Hollywood is underpriced. From Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale we are the only city with a Historical Downtown, a broad walk situated on the beautiful beaches, and conveniently located 5 minutes from the International Airport.
How does your service differ from your competitors? I am always available to answer client
calls 24/7, and attend all showings personally. I take pride in being knowledgeable and competent, and have integrity when working with all type of buyers and sellers. My number one priority is to provide quality to all my clients. Each client gets my personal attention. I make it my business to go the extra mile and I stay very involved in the entire process
Are you available to help clients at all times during the process? Yes, my work never stops. I’m available from the contract to closing. This is
the reason why my nickname is the “The Selling Machine”. I avoid using lock boxes, so people know I’ll be there for showings. I also attend all inspections and appraisals.
FEATURE STORY
T
wenty-five years ago, at the young age of twenty-one, Alex Bruno came to America from Uruguay via Mexico to establish a new life. Not knowing the obstacles ahead of him, he ventured on hoping for the best. Fortunately, he survived the journey and created a life he didn’t think would ever be his.
Do you have a specialty? Condos, single-family homes, retail, rentals...I don’t have a specific specialty, as I enjoy helping and handling all types of properties. I’m currently expanding into the commercial market. Where do you get leads for future business?
Ninety-five percent of my business is from past clients, referrals from clients, or other agents. When clients are looking to upgrade or sell their homes they have purchased with me, they remember my professionalism and negotiating skills and come back to me time after time.
How do you promote your listings? In addition to top-notch advertising for all my listings, each set of marketing materials always include the information people care about. From property details to community and school information, and local area attractions and happenings, I provide as much as I can. Everything I do for a client’s listing is of the highest quality. Are you able to help those looking to invest or relocate from other countries? My network of
real estate agents, buyers, and sellers spans the United States as well as several South American nations. When looking to invest in the South Florida real estate market and South Florida lifestyle, each client benefits from my local area expertise and fluencies in English, Spanish and Portuguese. I’m growing with the market trends and ongoing changes of the real estate industry.
Tell us about your office. Another one of my
dreams came true when I became one of the owners of RE/MAX 5 Star Realty. This venture has been the biggest achievement of my life. The building is approximately 5000 square feet. At the time this building was not even for sale, but I was attracted by the architecture. I approached the owners and we came to the right price...and here we are. We have two conference rooms and a large room upstairs for meetings and special events, support and training. I am also proud of our growing office which is full of great energy and professional agents who create a very different atmosphere than you would not find anywhere else. We are making this office into a model office at the very top and becoming the superstars in real estate. Camaraderie and good work ethics are our goal. This is a new concept in real estate offices; trendy and a one-stop real estate office for all of your needs.
What local associations and organizations are you involved with? In addition to selling real
estate, I actively support many local causes. I’ve been the Vice President for the past 10 years of the Hollywood Historical Society. I’m also currently the Director for the Hollywood Lakes Civic Association,

Do you have anything else you would like to share with our readers? I have worked tirelessly
to reach this point, but this hard work is only the beginning. In real estate, hard work means going the extra mile for every one of my clients. I love my work with all my heart. We have the tools to be a #1 City, and I take pride in educating and coaching myself in this New Era of Real Estate. My continuous commitment to my City, that is Hollywood, and my passion for real estate and other organizations in Hollywood, is how I plan to always make the City of Hollywood best place to live and play.

West Hollywood Elementary Students Embark Upon a Seaworthy Education
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
est Hollywood Elementary students had the opportunity to visit a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW, now in its 25th year, serves 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, 100 area businesses and community organizations, and 64 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment. In this case, the KAPOW partnership, sponsored by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the City of Hollywood, made it possible for these third graders to say, “Bon Voyage” to the classroom as they embarked on the Serenade of the Seas. The cruise line provided the volunteers in the school with staff from their corporate office as well as shipboard crew to conduct the visit. They graciously welcomed the Wildcats on board for a day off from the traditional learning campus to a day on a floating one. “As a Title I school the KAPOW program has opened our student’s eyes to career life after school by giving our students the opportunity to interact with people from the workplace,” said Jennifer Wisnoski, KAPOW Coordinator and
Third Grade Team Leader at West Hollywood Elementary. “Our volunteers have been nothing short of impactful by demonstrating professionalism, responsibility, respect, and going above and beyond to create a positive engaging learning environment for our students.” The students were able to create fruit sculptures with a master chef, participate in ship board recreational activities and enjoy lunch in the ship’s dining room. They also were exposed to jobs such as acting, entertaining, performing and cooking. Many workers on the ship were able to interact with the students by discussing what they do and answering all their questions. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success, in school, work, and life.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For more information about KAPOW, visit their website at http:// kapowlfs.wordpress.com or email Program Director Tania Reynolds at taniakapow@gmail.com.

n celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day in late April, Downtown Hollywood’s Funtastic Friday went “Green”. The City’s Green Team advisory board organized environmental exhibits from area schools, and environmental and community garden clubs at the monthly event at ArtsPark in Young Circle. Interactive, informational and environmental displays included: ▸▸ Coral reef nursery and shark tagging displays by Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center. ▸▸ A display on the mangrove preserve and wildlife found within the Anne Kolb Nature Center along with information on the center’s observation tower and kayak trails. ▸▸ Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park Park Rangers presenting information on sea turtle nesting, beach erosion and importance of sand dunes. ▸▸ Musical Performances without the use of electricity. ▸▸ An interactive Taiko drum performance by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) using drums made from recycled tires. They also taught how to make drums from recycled materials and drumming techniques. ▸▸ Award-winning Lauderhill Steel Ensemble performing with its members who range from ages 12 to 70. The group just won the Miami Panorama 2016 Steel Drum Band Championship. ▸▸ A performance by Chai Chien and her Ukulele group sponsored by the Music Club of Hollywood. Chien brings a variety of monthly musical performances to the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood.

One neighborhood school participating for the first time at the event was Driftwood Middle School. The eco-conscious students from the DMS Green Team set up a table and talked to attendees about how they could, and should, reduce their energy usage and trash consumption. The Florida Green and USDOE Green Ribbon School and “How Low You Can Go” challenge winners certainly know a thing or two about saving the planet. Kayla Bello and Samantha Phillips walked around and spoke to everyone they could about the “Trash on Your Back” program. “The program is about creating Zero Waste in a fun competition against other people,” explained Linda Gancitano, Driftwood Middle School Green Team Coordinator. “A person must pull out all recyclables and composted material. They then must wear all the trash on their back for three days and at the end of the three day competition they weigh all the material that would end up in the landfill.” In addition, Green Team crew members rewarded Hollywood residents who were “Seen Being Green” by practicing waste reduction and recycling. Crews canvased the City in early April in search of residents who actively engage in environmentally-friendly actions. Participants also self-reported via the City’s Twitter and Facebook accounts using the hashtag #SeenBeingGreen. Winners were randomly selected to redeem their “Seen Being Green” certificate for eco-friendly prizes like gift cards, smart power strips, and Florida native plants during the “Funtastic Friday Goes Green” event.

murals and art installations as well as other artistic endeavors. Weekly events and activities engage foodies, families, and art enthusiasts at Arts Park at Young Circle. It was announced earlier this year that travelers have chosen Hollywood Beach as a 2017 Trip Advisor Award winner. The world-famous Hollywood Beach was ranked number 6 on the list of the Top 25 Best Beaches in the United States. The impressive list includes other popular Florida beaches as well as those in California, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland and of course, Hawaii. Most recently, Brides Magazine named Hollywood as an “amazing honeymoon destination that deserves to be at the top of the must-visit list”. Hollywood was one of 20 on a prestigious list of unexpected domestic honeymoon destinations that include
Nantucket, Newport County, Rhode Island, Minneapolis, and locations in the Florida Keys. Hollywood Beach was named as one of America’s Best Beach Boardwalks by Travel + Leisure magazine. Additionally, Hollywood Beach has received the “Blue Waves Beaches” award for multiple years. This respected certification by the Clean Beaches Council designates the long stretch of sandy beach as one of the cleanest, safest, environmentally friendly beaches in the country. The destination’s dining trends are becoming more diverse and chefdriven. Newly opened are Geoffrey Zakarian’s Point Royal serving Coastal American cuisine and Michael Schulson’s Monkitail featuring modern Japanese Izakaya. Both top-rated dining experiences are located within the Diplomat Beach Resort. All 1,000 rooms at the resort have been completely refurbished during a $100 million upgrade. The new, tropical theme permeates throughout the area’s largest hotel. The on-going transformation of the City also features new luxury accommodations at the AAA Four Diamond-rated destination resort and entertainment complex, Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. The 349room, 17-story oceanfront resort inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter, and author Jimmy Buffett has a unique ‘no worries’, tropical vibe and provides locals the perfect “staycation”. Whether one wants to spend an afternoon at the beach, to enjoy an evening out, or to have a weekend “staycation” at one of the unique prop-
erties, one doesn’t need to travel far this summer. Hollywood Beach is just a hop, skip, and a jump away for a quick and easy getaway. For more information, please visit www.VisitHollywoodFl.org.

o stringent schedule. Eating new, exotic foods. Getting lost in a page-turning novel. Trying a new activity that takes you outside your comfort zone. These are the types of things that make for a memorable vacation. The problem is, you’re not traveling this year and instead are opting for the increasingly popular staycation. Yes, you’re taking PTO and staying put, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have an incredible time. In fact, many of the activities that make a traditional vacation so wonderful can be emulated while at home. To help make your staycation feel like a real getaway, follow these six steps. You’ll have just as much fun as leaving town, but you’ll save tons of money, plus get to sleep in your own bed. Limit technology: When you travel to a faraway location, you probably have limited-to-no access to your cell phone and email. That disconnection helps you unwind. Mimic that feeling by limiting your technology use during your staycation. Leave your phone upstairs, turn the computer off and resist grabbing the tablet. You should consider changing your email and phone message to say you’ll have limited access over the time you’re off, so people who contact you know it might be awhile until you get back to them. Escape with a destination-specific book: Want to feel like you’re leaving town without leaving the house? Historical fiction can transport you to a different time and place, no matter how short or long your time off. For example, New York Times bestselling author Anita Shreve’s newest novel, “The Stars Are Fire,” vividly brings 1947 New England to life. Based on a real event - “the year Maine burned,” when more than 200 fires raged across the state - the book introduces us to Grace Holland, five months pregnant and the mother to two toddlers.

ways to make your staycation feel like an actual
As flames rip through the town, Grace must flee into the ocean to survive, spending the night in the frigid sea as the fire sends debris and smoke onto the beach. In the morning, she discovers her husband missing and her home completely destroyed. Amid devastating loss, Grace must rebuild her family’s life, and find strength she didn’t know she had. The novel asks her, and its readers: What would you do if you could begin again? People Magazine called the book “original and gripping,” the perfect recipe for a staycation. And USA Today gave the book three and a half out of four stars: “Shreve is masterful at creating compelling characters whose inner conversations about love and intimacy are both heartfelt and heartrending ... [this] quiet novel about marriage, duty and passion lingers long after the last page is turned, like the smoke from a wildfire.” Eat exotic and amazing fare: Every corner of the world offers cuisine that represents the culture of the people who live there. When you travel, eating these types of foods enhances the vacation experience. During your staycation, skip standard weekly meals and try new destination-inspired recipes and make a few at home. Try your hand at a New England clam bake, the Midwest-famous Watergate Salad or chili rellenos from the southern U.S. states. Or, for a more exotic

taste adventure, explore ethnic recipes from around the world. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have fun making and eating the unique dishes. Drink and be merry: While you’re expanding your staycation experience with new cuisine, why not drink that way too? Complement your meals with a traditional location-inspired libation, such as a Manhattan from New York, Mai Tai from Hawaii or Vieux Carre from New Orleans. Of course there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages to wet your whistle, too. Feel the southern charm with a traditional sweet tea, or sit down with your book and instead of a classic cup of joe, indulge in an Italian espresso or an iced coffee. Break routine with a daily adventure: You may be home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t explore areas of your city that you rarely venture to. By doing new things, you’ll feel like you’re really on vacation! Visit that museum. Go to that quiet park. Take a hike down by the river. Go to a movie in the middle of the afternoon. Try something new, such as paddle boarding or rock climbing. Just because you’re “home” doesn’t mean you can’t have unique adventures that make for unforgettable memories. Staycations continue to grow in popularity, and with these tips, it will truly feel like a getaway rather than just bland days off at home.

oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community. The “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and
mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants or oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. ASK THE EXPERT
T
he spinal column has open spaces that create passageways for the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. However, a serious condition occurs when the spinal column narrows thus putting pressure on the spinal column and nerves. This painful compression of the nerves is known as Spinal stenosis. The pressure that occurs can cause pain, weakness and numbness, and is most common in the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine since the spinal column can narrow at any point from the head to the tailbone, including the center of the spine. This is where nerves branch out from the spinal cord, and in spaces between the vertebrae. The cause of Spinal stenosis is commonly caused by excess growth of the bone around the spinal nerves which is the result of osteoarthritis. It can also result from a dislocation or a fracture of the vertebral bone, or by soft tissue intruding into the spine’s open spaces. Other culprits are herniated discs, tumors, and thickened spinal ligaments which press against the spinal nerves. ▸▸ Some conditions and illnesses tend to affect mostly men or women, but Spinal stenosis does not discriminate. Both men and women may be affected by the condition. The primary cause is arthritis and aging, and equal numbers of men and women experience spinal stenosis. ▸▸ Patients over 50 years of age are the typical candidates for the condition. Very few patients under the age of 30 are diagnosed with spinal stenosis. If so, the cause is usually trauma to the spine from an external force, such as an auto accident. ▸▸ Spinal stenosis may be inherited. While spinal stenosis is mostly caused through the aging process, the condition can be passed down from one generation to the next. Associated conditions include scoliosis and achondroplasia. ▸▸ The location of spinal stenosis is related to where symptoms present in the body. Patients will feel numbness, pain, and tingling depending on where the spine narrows. If the lower part of the spine is effected, symptoms will present in the legs; if the spine narrows higher up, there will be symptoms in the arms. ▸▸ Surgery is not necessary to treat Spinal stenosis. Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity. Pain can radiate down the back, arms, and legs, indicating that there is a problem. The development of spinal stenosis can affect a person’s involuntary and voluntary functions, such as breathing, walking, and even bladder and bowel control. Spinal stenosis in the lower back usually causes sciatica. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, muscle relaxants, or other pain relief medications. Physical therapy may also be recommended as stretching and adjusting posture may alleviate some pain and help patients get relief from the discomfort associated with spinal stenosis. Simple flexing and stretching of the spinal column can also help elongate and enlarge the narrow segments and provide relief. Surgery may be required for patients who experience chronic discomfort and pain, especially if the bladder and bowels are compromised or if these other methods are not effective.

accuracy. We supply temporary shades until the order arrives. Customers receive a limited lifetime warranty on most of our products. Unlike many of the competitors, whose in-house service warranties last a year or less, we provide a three-year service warranty. If a service call is needed within the first three years, there is no charge for our technician to visit the home.

We supply a detailed form with measuring directions. Self-service is available on all of our products with the exception of plantation shutters.
How do you help customers make decisions? When customers visit our showroom, they receive a tour of the newest shades and blinds available today. We recognize that it can be difficult to make decisions from small samples. That’s why our business model is special. Our full-size displays are available for the customer to view and operate exactly as it will appear in their home. Our employees have decades of experience in the window covering industry, so they can answer personalized questions that will help customers make the best decisions tailored to their needs. Native coastal tribes first smoked salmon on an open fire over 1,000 years ago. Today, the signature smoked salmon from SeaBear is done in the traditional Northwest style, using premier hand-filleted wild Sockeye salmon. Wild Sockeye Copper River Salmon has a rich, red color and moist robust flavor. Each salmon fillet is vacuum-sealed in our famous Gold Seal pouch, then gently cooked in its own juices —this preserves the salmon naturally, so no refrigeration is required until you’re ready to serve.
