Caught-up in the 2014 Soccer World Cup?

T

his month , athletes from around the world

are fiercely competing for the crown in the world of soccer, the FIFA Soccer World Cup. While the competition on the field is often aggressive, these international athletes also demonstrate that our world is united in many things despite our different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. My own family is very much into sports, specifically soccer. Like many of our readers, we have an international background and have several national teams to cheer for all at the same time. There’s never a dull moment for us while the World Cup is on. Summer is a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. So let’s turn off the smartphones, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend time together watching the World Cup spectacle unfold or simply spending a day at the beach, visiting the Everglades, reading a book, playing a board game, going to the movies, splashing in the pool or just chilling out in the backyard. These quality moments together are what we and our children will remember for some time to come -- and a victory for your favorite soccer team wouldn’t be so bad either. Have a great summer! Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Schott Communities Clients Model Spring Fashions By Debby Teich

S

chott Communities

recently honored their exceptional clients at a sold-out event to raise funds to support the mission of the organization. During the Models of Inspiration Fashion Show & Luncheon, 35 Schott clients modeled spring fashions. While nearly 200 guests were enjoying the Silent Auction and Luncheon, Schott clients had their hair and makeup done by Dior and Aveda, and got dressed in clothing provided by Dillard’s of Westfield Mall. Each participant was announced individually as they walked down the run way to model their outfits. “This inspiring event celebrated the determination and positive outlook on life of the Schott Communities special needs clients,” said Jerry Cohen, Director of Annual Fund and Stewardship. “There was loads of cheering for the clients and teary eyes for all in attendance.” The event raised over $45,000, which will be used for the programs and services at Schott, including Art from the Heart, Daily Adult Training and Schott Saturdays. Next year’s event has already been scheduled for May 1, 2015. Schott Communities’ programs assist participants in developing skills for independent living, promote self-sufficiency, and provide social, recreational and spiritual opportunities to enhance their quality and enjoyment of life. The agency continues to strive to create an environment of caring and dignity for persons who are deaf or disabled by encouraging and challenging them to grow in self-acceptance and independence. Town of Davie Fire & Police Expo Is a Success By Debby Teich

W

hen most Davie residents have an emergency, they call the Davie

Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. They recently had an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo. Approximately 600 people attended the annual event held at the Public Safety Complex. “The event is a great opportunity for adults and children to interact with our officers and to get to know the Davie Police Department by seeing and learning about many of the services that we provide to the community,” said Sergeant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer for the Davie Police Department. “The Expo gives us an opportunity to showcase many of our specialized units, the police department building, and our various programs, all in a fun and exciting atmosphere.” Visitors to the Expo enjoyed demonstrations from the Police Motorcycle Unit, SWAT unit, K-9 team, Dive team, and a rappelling exhibition, as well as a fire extinguisher demonstration, CPR demonstration, and a vehicle extrication drill. They explored fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the smoke trailer, the Crime Scene Unit, and more. They visited with Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog. They also toured the inside of Fire Station 65 and the Police Department, where they saw the equipment that the firefighters and police officers use and carry. Local and state agencies had tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), stroke awareness, blood pressure checks, child fingerprinting, child car seat safety, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more. The Food Truck Round Ups also offered a variety of delicious foods. Gary Kraemer attended the event for the second year with his two sons. “My kids could not wait to go back,” said Kraemer. “They loved talking to the police officers and fire fighters and enjoyed all of the demonstrations.” For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Cooper City Mothers and Daughters Spend Quality Time Together By Debby Teich

recently gathered for a Mother/Daughter Tea Party at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2001, this hometown event has been a way for them to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy a special afternoon together. Many of them return year after year. This year, approximately 90 residents participated in the event. Dressed in party attire, they sampled a variety of teas, coffee, punch, sandwiches, and sweets – all served on real china. They enjoyed a performance by Dance Explosion and played Bingo. They participated in a Chinese Auction, where they bid on arts & crafts supplies, journals, and other items that most elementary school girls would want. The kids also made cards for their moms and placed a photo of the two of them inside. They gave it to mom, along with a rose. “Everyone had a great time,” said Simone James, Facility Coordinator for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. “It was a fun way for Cooper City residents to get together and celebrate Mother’s Day.” For information, visit www. coopercityfl.org.

Davie Offers Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program By Debby Teich

D

avie’ s rural character and equestrian lifestyle has

attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses are safe in the event that a major storm

threatens the area. For the past nine years, the Town has opened a 100-acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area when a hurricane warning has been issued. The Town has already begun accepting pre-registration applications for the Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program. There is an annual fee of $40 per horse and applications are available online at www.davie-fl.gov. In order to qualify for the program, you must be a Davie resident or your horse(s) must live in Davie. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph or it is deemed safe by emergency personnel. The Town encourages residents to visit the site before they pre-register to determine if it is safer than their current situation. William Surrey of Davie owns a horse and plans to sign up for the program. Although he prefers to keep his horse on his own property during a storm, he will sign up in case there is severe weather. “I have a hurricane plan for my family and it is important to have one for my horse as well,” said Surrey. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to my horse in a storm. I am happy that the Town has a program and I will certainly use it if necessary.” For information, call 954-797-1163 or visit www.davie-fl.gov. Click on Hurricane Info and locate Davie Horse Release Program.

Students Give Back to Davie During Firewall’s Serve-A-Thon By Debby Teich

tors, school representatives, and community leaders, recently joined together for Firewall’s 1st Annual Serve-A-Thon. During the hands-on event, the students had an opportunity to learn the value of giving back, while making a lasting difference in their neighborhoods. Headquartered in Davie, Firewall Centers is a nonprofit that provides free after-school mentoring, tutoring, and leadership development to low-income middle and high school students in urban neighborhoods darkened by poverty, drugs, and illicit activity. The program’s objective is to improve performance outcomes among its students as related to their school attendance, behavior, and course performance, thus helping them to ultimately achieve self-sufficiency as they pursue their life goals. Students learn to T.H.I.N.K. (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back). During the Serve-A-Thon, students from each of Firewall’s six centers worked on different projects. The largest effort was in Davie. Approximately 100 students, along with their Firewall mentors, Regent Bank volunteers, and other community

leaders served at the Davie Fire Station, planted trees at the Davie Police Station, landscaped public spaces, and painted at the Davie Rodeo Grounds. They also cleaned up and beautified Pompano Beach Middle School by mulching, planting trees and flowers, and served food to the homeless in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. The event raised over $50,000 to expand services to at-risk youth. “It was powerful to see students that come from poverty and difficult circumstances not only enthusiastically give of themselves, but also raise money to support Firewall,” said Executive Director Andy Fernandez. “This event truly taught them what servant leadership is all about.” This mindset was echoed by several of the student participants. “Serving made me feel like a true leader,” said Astrel. “It made my day,” said Santina. “I felt good, and it’s been a while since I have felt that way!” “I felt like I could make a change in the world,” said Arianna. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Cooper City High School Student Crowned King By Debby Teich

P

rom is a special night for most teens , but for Cooper City

High School senior Randy Kersh it was a dream come true. Randy, who was born with Down syndrome, was named Prom King. He is the school’s first student with a developmental disability to receive the crown. “When his name was announced, he had tears of joy in his eyes,” said his prom date, Shelby Hodges. “I was not surprised, since he is very outgoing. Everyone knows him and loves him. He is my best friend and I can always count on him to make me smile.” At the beginning of the school year, Randy decided that he wanted to be Prom King and started a word-of-mouth campaign. “Randy has dreams just like every other kid and this was one of them,” said his mother, Nina Greene. “He found out what he needed to do to get on the ballot and began campaigning. He asked all of his friends to vote for him and spread the word. I am so proud of him for setting a goal and making it happen.” Randy said he is very excited to be king. “This was something that I really wanted to accomplish and it felt great when I heard my name announced,” said Randy. Randy took classes with Randy Kersh was named Prom King.

other ESE students, as well as with the general population. He was very active throughout high school. He spent four years in the Drama Club as an actor and part of the crew. He managed the volleyball team for four years and the basketball team for one year. During his sophomore year, he was the school mascot for several events and games. He was also a self-advocate through Best Buddies. He was in the Best Buddies Club for all four years and was on the board as the Buddy Director. As a Buddy Ambassador, he gave speeches about inclusion and the importance of Best Buddies. In the fall, Randy will fulfill another dream. He will be attending the Randy Kersh and Shelby Hodges University of North Florida, where he went to prom together. will be enrolled in the On Campus Transition Program. He will have an opportunity to be involved in campus life, while learning independent living skills. Ultimately, he wants to work for the Best Buddies organization. “Randy is the friendliest, happiest person you will ever meet,” said Greene. “It has been very emotional and moving to watch him do the things that the other seniors did, such as attending Grad Bash, Homecoming, and Prom. It has been a very special year.”

Tree of Life Academy Preschool Succeeds by Setting the Bar High for Early Childhood Education By Stacey Bomser

I

t’s been almost a year since Tree of Life

Christian Academy Preschool first opened its doors. Owners Gabriel and Marcy Buitrago say they’ve been overwhelmed by the response, with the school nearly at capacity and exciting new programs, including a new kindergarten class, starting this upcoming school year. The couple explains the secret to their success and what families can expect when enrolling their child/children at Tree of Life.

What is Tree of Life Christian Academy? Gabriel: Tree of Life is a 13,000 square foot, state-ofthe-art private preschool located on a beautiful 2½ acre campus in Weston. Our mission and guarantee is to provide every child with a quality education in a fun and safe learning environment. Marcy: Our school is known for providing a nurturing family atmosphere for children to learn using a comprehensive curriculum, allowing us to live up to our motto “A Higher Level of Care and Education” each and every day. What distinguishes Tree of Life from other preschools? Gabriel: We don’t skimp on the products and services we offer our families and their children. We guarantee everything we offer and do is top of the line. That includes our 100% organic lunches, dual language curriculum, degreed teachers, latest learning tools and materials, our on-site clinic, hi-tech safety and security, our amazing indoor/outdoor play areas and, last but not least, our one-of-a-kind mascot, “JUDAH” the Lion Marcy: It’s these things that mean the most to our families. We recently read on a review that filled us with joy, it read “Tree of Life is not just a preschool, it’s an inspiring place of learning unlike any other.” You will be celebrating your first anniversary soon, any special plans? Marcy: September will mark one year. We are thankful for how God has blessed us. We have grown so fast and had so much success. We are also thankful for the amazing acceptance and love we have received from the community. We are already working on plans for our anniversary celebration. What do you consider your greatest accomplishment from this first year? Gabriel: I honestly would have to say it’s seeing our dream happen exactly how we imagined it right before our eyes on a daily basis. It is so rewarding to see families happily bringing their children to our school and knowing that we offer a top facility with every feature and service a parent would want for their child. Speaking of offering what parents want, what new programs are you adding this year? Marcy: We are thrilled to announce the start of our new kindergarten program. Since the day we opened parents have been asking for it! Kindergarten is

something we always wanted for our kids when they were in preschool. Any parent, if you ask them, would prefer to have their little precious child one more year in preschool than to have to put them in elementary school with the older children. Gabriel: Our kindergarten program will be open to all students. You do not need to have attended preschool at Tree of Life. The enrollment deadline is August first. What other new programs are you adding this year? Gabriel: We will offer afterschool programs in a variety of subject areas including Spanish, computers, art, music, sports, ballet, math and reading. The after-school program is open to students from all area schools. What is the educational philosophy at Tree of Life? Marcy: We offer a unique curriculum created by combining two top-rated early childhood curriculums, Abeka and High Scope, which emphasize phonetics, creativity and learning through experience. Gabriel: All of our classrooms were specifically designed to encourage learning. They feature different learning centers such as language, reading, computers, science, art and role playing. In addition, our classrooms are equipped with the latest computers and iPads to keep up with twenty-first century technology. We are also pleased to offer a bilingual, English and Spanish, curriculum which appeals to parents wanting to expose their children to different languages at a young age. Do you encourage parent involvement in their child’s education? Marcy: Absolutely! Parent involvement is key in helping develop the children’s mind. We encourage our parents to review the lesson plans with their kids. We also give a little homework so the students can go over what they have learned at home with the parents. How does faith play a role in your curriculum? Marcy: Although our school is Christian faith based, we recognize that instilling family values is

important to all faiths. We have no church affiliation and welcome students of all faiths. We have students who are Christian, Jewish and Muslim. Gabriel: Love and kindness are values that all children should learn. We teach respect for your parents, teachers and friends. We teach students to live faith through their actions by supporting many philanthropic agencies and holding various fundraisers at the school, including Toys for Tots and Women in Distress. We feel giving back to the community that supports us is the right thing to do and it also teaches children the importance of giving back to their community. What qualifications do you require of your teachers? Marcy: Teachers are the backbone of our school. They are the fountain that provides the knowledge for the children. Our lead teachers have Bachelor or Master Degrees. Our teachers and staff are required to perform at the highest level with integrity, excellence and to provide a high level of education in a fun and loving environment. What security measures do you take to protect your students? Gabriel: Security is of utmost importance to us here at Tree of Life. Parents are entrusting us with their most precious possession and we want them to know that they are safe and 100% secured at our school. Our facility is equipped with bullet-proof front and rear entry doors, latest hi-tech security camera system, two passcode access doors to the interior of the school, plus every classroom has a private bathroom and water fountain so children never need to leave the classroom. We also have an outdoor perimeter security system. Anything else you would like readers to know about Tree of Life? Gabriel: My wife and I would like to thank all the families and students that believed in us and have been part of our fast growth and success. We are committed to this community in providing them with the best preschool in the area! We also would like to offer a friendly challenge to every parent looking for a preschool to come by for a tour and experience our school. We are confident in saying that you will not find any other school like Tree of Life Academy in this area. Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool is located at 1250 SW 160th Ave. in Weston, behind the Weston 8 Cinema plaza. It offers programs for infants through kindergarten. To schedule a tour of the facility, call (954) 440-0174. For more information visit www. TreeOfLifeAcademy.com.

ccording to statistics from the National

Institute of Health, approximately one out of every four Americans has a digestive disorder known to cause an absorption deficiency. Whether this problem is due to a malabsorption issue after gastric bypass or simply because our diet is lacking in vitamin and mineral content, nutritional health can adversely affect overall wellness. Nutritional well-being enhances immune function, improves healing time and recovery, decreases inflammation, increases energy and assists in maintaining overall health. While proper nutrition is important for daily living, it becomes essential when recovering from a surgical procedure. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that those individuals who undergo both non-elective and elective surgery (breast implants, tummy tuck, face lift, etc.) are lacking adequate levels of minerals and vitamins to properly heal. When the body is depleted of vitamins and minerals that are essential to the recovery process, increased risks of complications such as delayed healing, increased pain, infection and mortality rise exponentially. Intravenous (IV) Nutritional Therapy will improve the ability of your cells to detoxify, repair and regenerate, so you can heal faster and feel better again. If you are undergoing a supervised surgical procedure and/or one of the following, then IV Nutritional Therapy will speed up your recovery process, while improving your overall health when you need it the most. ▸▸ You are 35 years old and above ▸▸ Smoke or have a history of smoking ▸▸ Have chronic illness ▸▸ Have history of infections ▸▸ Scar easily ▸▸ Would like to minimize pain and discomfort IV therapy is different from taking a multi vitamin daily by mouth in that only 20-30% of the nutritional content of the vitamin is actually absorbed by the body; whereas, IV therapy insures 100% absorption of nutrients directly into your cells. Intravenous therapy bypasses the digestive system which blocks the absorption of nutrients. There is no better way than Intravenous therapy to introduce vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly into the bloodstream. Surgery is not the only indication for IV Nutrition Therapy. There are many other indications besides pre/post surgery for IV Nutrition Therapy, such as: ▸▸ Adrenal Fatigue ▸▸ Malabsorptive Syndromes ▸▸ Increasing Athletic Performance ▸▸ Migraine Headaches ▸▸ Increasing Immune System ▸▸ After Chemotherapy Treatments ▸▸ Bowel Disorders (Ulcerative Colitis/ Crohn’s Disease) ▸▸ Chronic Stress ▸▸ Gastric Bypass ▸▸ Cold/Flu ▸▸ Chronic Fatigue ▸▸ Fibromyalgia ▸▸ Preventative Care Nutritional well-being is the cornerstone of good health! Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, IV Nutrition Therapy and Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston.

Davie United GU11 Girls Soccer Team Wins State Championship By Debby Teich

The Davie United Sharks GU11 Girls team and Coach Rachael Reid celebrate at the President’s Cup State Championship.

A

fter making waves throughout the soccer season , the Davie United Sharks GU11 Girls team was named State Champions. Most of the girls played together for several years as part of a Cooper City travel soccer team. Last year, they successfully completed a difficult feat in the soccer world. They moved the entire team over to the Davie United Soccer Club with NSU support. They also got a new coach, Rachael Reid, NSU alumnus and current physical therapy student.

Although this was Reid’s first year coaching, she is a seasoned soccer player. She played soccer in high school and attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on a soccer scholarship. After getting injured, she transferred to Nova, where she played on the soccer team for two years. “All of the girls were great when I started working with them, but they have improved so much,” said Reid, who plans to coach the team again next year. “They understand the technical aspect of the game and have a lot of chemistry. They are competitive, always get the job done, and have plenty of team spirit.” Even though the girls were GU11 last season, they typically played against GU12 teams. They won numerous tournaments against teams that were older and more experienced. After easing their way to a Regional Championship, they earned the right to compete in the President’s Cup State Championship. The team continued to dominate and won the game 4-0 in overtime to bring home the State Championship. Karina Lageyre, 10, has been playing soccer for the past three years. The mid-fielder, who attends Embassy Creek Elementary School, says that she loves everything about the game. “It was great to win in our region, but winning in the whole state was awesome,” said Karina. “The team was successful, because we are friends and understand each other when connecting passes. When the other team thought we were tired, we scored on them.” Karlie Schlosser, 11, has been playing soccer for the past five years. The defense player and goalie, who attends Griffin Elementary, says that she loves playing soccer with her friends and gaining skills. She credits both Cooper City and Davie for helping the team become better players. “Cooper City helped us with learning the game of soccer and how to play it,” said Karlie. “Davie Sharks helped us to become champs.” For information, visit www.daviesharks.com.

Town of Davie Offers Men’s and Women’s Adult Soccer Leagues By Debby Teich

T

he Town of Davie has responded to the growing

demand for more soccer programs by introducing Adult Men’s and Women’s Soccer Leagues. The year round leagues will begin this month. They will be held at Bamford Park. Bamford Park used to have four roller hockey rinks. Two of them were converted to a Skate Park and Pickleball court. The remaining two were recently covered in artificial turf and will serve as soccer fields. “It is like the turf that the professionals play on,” said Guy Dicarlo, Fitness Specialist who is organizing the program. “It is very forgiving and drains quickly after it rains. The new turf will be maintained to keep the integrity of the quality surface.” Registration will be limited to the first eight men’s and women’s teams that register. The league is open to both residents and nonresidents. Each league will consist of a ten game season, with a two game playoff. League winners will receive awards. “The goal is to run quality leagues with referees and offer competitive soccer,” said Dicarlo. The men will play in a 7 v 7 format, including goalies. There will be a Men Over 35 League on Monday evenings, as well as a Men’s Open League (18 and older) on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. The women will play in a 5 v 5 format, including goalies. It will consist of Women Over 30 League on Tuesday evenings and Women’s Open League (18 and older) on Thursday evenings. For information, call 954-327-3929 or send an email to guy_dicarlo@davie-fl.gov.

Broward College Students De-Stress During Finals Week By Debby Teich

F

inal exams are often stressful for students . I n an effort to

help them cope, Broward College and the Florida Humane Society teamed up to host the 1st Annual Pet De-stress at the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie during finals week. “Studies have shown that pets can be calming stress-fighters and even help improve test scores,” said Tina David, Media Relations Specialist for Broward College. “Since finals week is an extremely stressful time for students, we wanted to provide a short escape from final exam anxiety. The event not only helped our students de-stress, but it also allowed the Florida Humane Society the opportunity to showcase their adoptable puppies and dogs to the community.”

Broward College and the Florida Humane Society set up a small tent in front of the library. Six volunteer dogs provided fun and served as a distraction to stressed students, staff and faculty. Each dog had its own play pen and a student volunteer who supervised. Students were encouraged to pet, play and cuddle with their volunteer dog of choice in between classes. The dogs were also available for adoption. “The event not only offered students a distraction from finals, it also brought attention to a good cause and a local organization,” said David. “The event was very successful and the College plans on hosting the event again.”

University School Student Organizes Shoe Fundraiser By Debby Teich

A

s a member of

National Junior Art Honor Society at University School of NSU, Rachel Bomser was looking for a way to give back. By putting a creative twist on a TOMS’ program, she was able to help children in other countries, as well as in her own community. This was the second year that the school implemented the program. TOMS donates one pair TOMS’ project organizer Rachel Bomser helps of shoes for every pair that is 5th grader Victoria Beracha decorate her shoes. purchased. The company works with communities that will benefit most from their shoes due to economic, health and educational needs-and where local businesses will not be negatively affected. To help support their efforts, they developed a Style Your Sole program, which allows schools to sell the canvas shoes and then host decorating parties to customize them. Last year, Rachel added a local component to the TOMS’ program. University School charged an extra $10 for each pair and used the profits to donate more than $500 of art supplies to Flamingo Elementary in Davie. It was a classic example of “kids helping kids.” “I was surprised to learn that Flamingo Elementary was lacking some basic supplies, such as crayons, paper, drawing pencils and erasers,” said Rachel. This year, the rising junior expanded the program from the middle school to also include 4th and 5th graders, so more students could participate. They decorated the shoes with paint pens, glitter paint, sequins, gems, and other art supplies. Some of the kids used a theme, such as Gators, One Direction, or the

movie “Divergent.” “All of the kids that participated had fun painting the shoes and being creative,” said Rachel. The NJAHS will use the profits to purchase art supplies for Tamarac Elementary. Rachel says the plan is to help a different school each year. “I feel it is important for every student to be able to have art as a proper class,” said Rachel. “We will donate the art supplies during the summer. When the school year begins, they will have the art supplies in stock.”

Every year, the League awards four $1,000 scholarships to Broward County seniors who plan to attend a college or university to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field. The scholarships are made possible by personal contributions from Broward County’s elected officials and Broward League of Cities associate members. Cooper City High School’s Isabella Muncan, Cypress Bay High School’s Benjamin Sandler and J.P. Taravella High School’s Emily Bonasia also won awards. “These students will become tomorrow’s leaders,” said Broward League of Cities President and Town of Davie Councilmember Susan Starkey. “We’re pleased to be able to help them achieve their dreams of pursuing careers in government and public service.” Raymond graduated with an unweighted GPA of 3.72, as well as a long list of awards and accomplishments. 3rd Grade Students Visit Publix in Cooper City Commons By Debby Teich

A

fter a visit to P ublix in Cooper City Commons, 3rd grade students at Pembroke Pines Elementary have a much better understanding of how math makes “cents.” This is just one of the many lessons that James Gooze, Publix store manager, has been teaching them throughout the year as part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. This is the first year that Gooze has participated in the program. Gooze, along with customer service members Lacey Duncan and Katie Duncan, met with students in Dr. Barbara Sibble’s third grade class each month. For the last lesson, the students took a field trip to Publix to see where they work. Another second grade class joined them. “The students learned about 12 different jobs in the store,” said Gooze. “The department managers explained what they do and the kids had an opportunity to try many of the jobs.” After learning how to make bread and cake, the students got to use some of the same tools to decorate cookies. They worked in the check-out line and counted money. They learned about the store’s recycling program. They visited the meat and produce departments. They built store displays and stocked shelves. They learned about the importance of good communication and teamwork. “The kids loved it,” said Gooze. “They had an opportunity to experience new things. Some of these kids may be the next Publix store manager or employee. Through KAPOW, we have an opportunity to help them develop the skills they need in order to be successful in any career.” Gooze says that he and his team plan to participate in the program again next year. KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida.

For information about volunteering, or your school or business becoming a KAPOW partner, visit www.kapowlfs.org or send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com.

Local Students Win “Take 5 to Stay Alive” Video Contest By Debby Teich

A

ccording to a

study by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, those who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in some type of safety critical event, as compared to those who do not text while driving. High school students throughout Broward County recently participated in Cooper City High School won 1st place. the 1st Annual “Take 5 to Stay Alive” video contest to remind their peers not to text and drive. Cooper City High School won 1st place and McFatter Technical High School won 2nd place. The contest was sponsored by BECON-TV in partnership with Broward County Public Schools, Broward Regional EMS Council, Broward Health, Broward Sheriff’s Office and Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue. The students were asked to produce and submit their best interpretation of the message “Take 5 to Stay AliveDon’t Text & Drive” in a 30-second public service announcement. Schools and students submitted 15 videos, which were judged by a panel of experts in a variety of categories “It is a tremendous responsibility that we help get the message out to youth about the dangers of texting and driving,” said School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson, who served as a judge for the contest. “This video competition was a great opportunity for Broward students to creatively get the message out to their peers.” In Cooper City High School’s 1st place video, a female is seen texting and

driving as she talks about how she always thought she would be something. She planned to change the world, help people, and live a meaningful life. She says that she never thought it would happen to her or end this way. After she gets into an accident, she says, “Now it doesn’t matter what I thought – all because of a McFatter Technical High School won 2nd place. single text.” In McFatter Technical High School’s 2nd place video, a student is selling “the pocket,” a new invention that can help drivers avoid the hassle of texting and driving. He says that viewers should not “drive and text” and can “avoid the wrecks” by getting the pocket. Cooper City High received $750 and McFatter Technical High received $500 to use for new equipment. They also received trophies, gift cards and a variety of other prizes provided by sponsors. Teachers of the winning students received Replay XD cameras. The winning videos were presented at a red carpet opening at the Cinemark 24 movie theater and were also broadcast on BECON-TV. Homestead-Miami Speedway will recognize the students during Ford Championship Weekend later this year. Students will receive tickets to Ford Championship Weekend and their videos will be featured during pre-race ceremonies. The program’s spokesperson, Gabby Chaves, is a championship race car driver on the Indy Lites circuit. He is also a Western High School honors graduate living in Weston.

The goal is to break ground on the new building in September 2014, which coincides with Posnack’s 40th anniversary. “This is an amazing time at Posnack,” said Cuenca. “We are positioning ourselves to be at the forefront of education and leaders of our greater Jewish community. Ask the Sheriff

Legally Speaking

Helping Our Children Navigate from Childhood to Adulthood

Looking for Answers

By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

A

large part of growing up is learning from

our mistakes. The lessons we learn when we are young help to build the strong moral character of our adulthood. As Sheriff, I have taken steps to ensure the positive development of many of our county’s youth by mandating civil citations for first-time juvenile offenders. A civil citation in lieu of an arrest provides a much-needed opportunity for a minor who has made a mistake to learn from that mistake. Putting vulnerable adolescents in jail is only teaching them to become career criminals, and arrest records impede employment opportunities and access to credit. After being issued a citation, a child can accept responsibility, obtain appropriate counseling and be diverted away from the criminal court system. The civil citation initiative has been successful in helping the children and teenagers of our county keep their records clean and their focus clear. In the year prior to my mandating civil citations to eligible juveniles, only 68 were referred to the program. In the 14 months since I made it mandatory, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies have referred 376 juveniles, more than five times the previous number. That’s 376 children with the opportunity to stay in school and out of jail. That’s 376 second chances. That’s thousands of tax dollars saved. That’s hundreds of lives regained. I am also thrilled to report that approximately 96 percent of the youths who complete the civil citation program do not reoffend. To further the effort of keeping children in schools and out of jail, last year I signed the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. (Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Support, and Education) program agreement. P.R.O.M.I.S.E. is an agreement signed by BSO, various agencies and the Broward County public schools. The initiative was a response to the zero tolerance approach, which had previously guided teachers and administrators to discipline children through expulsions, suspensions and unnecessary arrests. The P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program offers alternatives to arrests and suspensions through school counseling sessions and interventions, and aids in ending the school-toprison pipeline. Since signing the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program agreement, schoolrelated arrests have decreased by more than 65 percent. In most instances, a student may receive up to four chances to complete the program and learn from a wrongdoing before the school board turns the matter over to law enforcement. Between August 2013 and May 2014, there were 1,955 referrals to the P.R.O.M.I.S.E. program. These students won’t have a criminal record and will have another chance to go on to lead productive lives. Programs that support education over incarceration will always have my support because they are an effective way to keep kids on the path to academic success. One of our responsibilities as parents, teachers and mentors is to help our children navigate successfully from childhood to adulthood. A coordinated effort from the sheriff’s office, parents, teachers, community groups and leaders is necessary to help safeguard their accomplishments. This effort will not only preserve and enrich the lives of our children, but it will also strengthen the bonds of our community. Our success must be measured by the number of children we keep in school and out of jail. The civil citation and P.R.O.M.I.S.E. programs are dedicated to the future of our youth. To stay up-to-date about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff.org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter@browardsheriff.

A

s we go through our daily lives , we often

come upon situations which require us to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions can be minor in nature and other times they can be somewhat more complex. None of them compares to the decision a person has to make in deciding if they should pursue a divorce from their spouse. I hear these questions almost every day from either prospective or existing clients; “Should I stay married or get a divorce?”; “Should I accept this deal or go to trial?”; “What

should I do?” Unfortunately, divorce attorneys don’t always have the answers. I can certainly advise a client based upon my 35 plus years of experience, but in reality the decision must always be that of the client. When I meet with a prospective new client who is considering a divorce, I am often asked for my opinion as to what he or she should do. I explain that I do not

ever encourage an individual to get divorced, but obviously sometimes that is in fact their best option. It is however, a very personal decision that he or she must make based upon all the factors involved. I can advise a person as to the law and how his or her case will probably get resolved. I say “probably,” because when there are two parties involved, it is impossible to predict what the other party will be seeking. I often explain to a client that no matter how reasonable they may be, the process will also depend upon the reasonableness of their spouse. So I am asked, “What should I do?” I tell them that it is their decision and they will know when it is time to make that decision. I have had individuals return to retain my services one or even two years after their initial consultation. It took that long to be able to answer the question, “What should I do?” Once the process has begun, I am also often asked “What should I do?” when faced with the decision to either enter into a marital settlement agreement or proceed to trial. Once again, I can advise them based upon the law and my experience, but no attorney can ever guarantee a particular result if the case goes to trial. Often times, the agreement is extremely fair and equitable and, as such, I advise my client that it is a good deal for them and they should certainly consider it. If the offer is equal to “their worst day in court,” then the decision is also fairly easy. Why settle a case when you will probably get better results from a judge? Of course the usual reason is financial, since it may cost more money to go to trial than to settle. We sometimes have clients who disregard our advice and accept a “deal” that may not be the best that they can receive. Of course, it is ultimately their decision. So, in reality the person who can best answer the question “What should I do?” is the client. Of course, I can only hope that decision is made after they consider my advice. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

The Facts about Laughing Gas By Dr. Maria Grosman

L

ike many parents in our community, I tend to

approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas”. In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established.

Kathy’s sciatic pain was so crippling that her housekeeper had to hold her up as she hobbled into Dr. Denny’s office, where she quickly learned about the amazing healing properties of the MLS Robotic Laser. “Dr. Denny gave me a laser treatment and I actually walked out of his office without any help!” After three treatments over a week and a half, Kathy’s excruciating pain was gone. “It was a severe case and I wouldn’t have believed it if it had not happened to me. I highly recommend MLS Robotic Laser!”

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience”. Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 954-236-3434.

Having a Professional in Your Corner…Five Reasons to Use a Real Estate Agent By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor

A

few years ago, I published an article as to

the five reasons you need a Real Estate agent: ▸▸ Pricing is difficult.

▸▸ Negotiating ability is crucial. ▸▸ Mortgages are key. ▸▸ Your family’s safety is critical. ▸▸ Selling is a full-time job. Since that article, the Real Estate industry has become even more challenging. Here are the latest five reasons you need an agent today. ▸▸ What do you do with all this paperwork? Every state has different regulations regarding the contracts required for a successful sale, and these regulations are constantly changing. Florida is no different. There are more disclosures - lead-based paint and Chinese drywall, as well as short-sale and relocation addenda - all driving more paperwork and more deadlines. Following up on contract deadlines has now become a full-time job. ▸▸ Buyers – You’ve found that dream home. Now what? With our lowerthan-low inventory, multiple bids are now the “norm.” As a listing agent, that’s a dream. As a Buyer’s agent, that’s a nightmare. An experienced agent can turn that Buyer’s dream into a reality, as well as navigate the multiple bids with the Seller. ▸▸ Are you a good negotiator? This remains one of the top five. With all the moving parts of a transaction, your agent has to make sure that all the puzzle pieces come together successfully. Writing the contract is the easy part. Getting it to the Closing Table requires a professional. ▸▸ What is the home you are buying or selling really worth? With all of the various metrics available, determining value has become quite the serious art form. Whether you are the Buyer or Seller, your agent needs to determine market value so that you, the Buyer, are not overpaying for a property or you, the Seller, do not accept anything below market unless there are extenuating circumstances.   Some are still concerned that we are entering into another “bubble.” Trulia revealed that even with the recent price increases, national home prices are still seven percent undervalued.   “Home prices nationally remain undervalued relative to fundamentals and much lower than in the last bubble. That’s why today’s price gains are actually still a rebound, not a bubble.”

▸▸ Do you really know what is going on in our marketplace? The highly respected Gallup organization released their April Economy and Personal Finances Poll, which asked Americans to choose the best option for long term investment. Real Estate returned to the top position over other investment categories (gold, stocks/mutual funds, savings accounts/CDs and bonds). It is difficult to assimilate all that is dispensed through the media. There is ever-changing information on the News and the Internet about home sales, pricing and mortgage rates. Our large, local Real Estate firm provides up-to-date information through leadership teams, tools and ancillary companies, such as mortgage, title, insurance, relocation and developments. Real Estate requires the expertise of an experienced professional who understands the maze of paperwork, negotiations, multiple bids, pricing, preconstruction developments and the local market. Writing the contract is the easy part, getting it to the closing table requires a professional. Choosing the Right Specialist for an ACL Rupture Dr. Al DeSimone

A

nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures

remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help ruleout concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, one may consider conservative/nonoperative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice.

Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine. He Specializes in Complex Knee Ligament and Shoulder Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is the Director of Sports Medicine at Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, Weston, FL 33326. To schedule an appointment, please call (954) 389-9178. The Bryan family of Southwest Ranches took a copy of Our City Davie (formerly Davie Town Times) with them on their vacation to Denali National Park in Alaska. Each year, more than 400,000 people visit the national park and preserve to see the highest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley, view wildlife, mountain climb, backpack, and more. Photo: Linda, Richard, granddaughter Abbie, and daughter McKenna.

“Colby” Colby is a 6-year-old Shih tzu. His favorite person is his dad, who takes him on long walks around the neighborhood. His favorite toy is a stuffed doggy in pajamas that he sleeps with every night. He likes to have his belly rubbed, eat doggy treats, take long walks, and ride in the car with his head sticking out of the window. He dislikes thunder storms, loud fireworks, the swimming pool, and soap in his eyes during bath time. His favorite thing to do is to play fetch with his toy animals. Colby was last seen sleeping on his back next to his dad’s bed after a long walk around the block.

Describe your typical clients. Since our technique can be adapted to anyone, we see clients of all ages.

What distinguishes RMS Therapy from competitors?

MiaMi - dade 9425 Sunset Dr. Miami, FL 33173

We only work on soft tissues, because they hold our body structure. With our stretching technique, we bring the blood flow to areas that were lacking oxygen and then restore range of motion that is often lost for years. With this oxygenation, we give the body the nutrients it needs to be ready for competitions or simply for every day’s work.
