Spring into Summer
T
he days are getting longer and the tropical South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down on us and the air conditioners are humming at full blast. The school year is coming to an end. While we are trying to decide between the pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break. In a hurry, we are making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations. Summer is in the air! This May issue of the Our City Magazines features our annual Summer Camp Guide, which showcases the multitude of local summer camps and kids activities offered in your community. For additional camps and activities, please visit our comprehensive online South Broward Summer Camp Guide at www.OurCityMedia.com. In the midst of all this, spring is passing by and Mother’s Day has sneaked up on us. Let’s all take a little pause, reflect on what is important, and honor our mothers (and often our wives), for they are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. It’s time to truly pamper and spoil them for a change. Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

J
ake Scaduto and Stephen Katz, the 24 and 25 year-old Managing Partners of United Assurance’s Miami office do more than just offer much needed insurance products to their clients. This ambitious duo have created a structure to also help those in need.
They figured out a way to donate a portion of their commissions from each new client acquisition to one of their three local charity partnerships: Fairy Tails Adoptions, Whispering Manes Therapeutic Riding Center and Wayside House. The young entrepreneurs’ unique approach not only gives these organizations the much needed funds, they give their time as well. “Steve and I had a mission once we opened our Miami office that we were going to give back to the community,” says Scaduto. “After much vetting and research, we found that larger organizations looked at their donors as just another number,” added Katz. “We wanted to have a more personal relationship with our community, so we started seeking out smaller organizations who need the help and recognition more than most people can imagine.” Fairy Tails Adoptions was founded by Donna Halpern in Kendall. Donna is a one-woman show that has dedicated her life to the rescue of animals and educating school children on the human treatment of animals. “There are so many deserving charities in the world, it is hard for people to donate to all the charities they’d like to. The vast majority of funds go to larger, more well-known organizations,” says Halpern. “When United Assurance told me their plan was to help three smaller, overlooked charities, I felt privileged to meet Jake & Steve. I can’t express how honored and proud for Fairy Tails to be a part of such a special company.”
Whispering Manes Therapeutic Riding Center, founded in 2010 by Nancy Hector, is an organization created to benefit children and adults with special needs or disabilities by offering them the opportunity to interact with dedicated horses in a manner that promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being through therapeutic riding. “The commitment and support of organizations like United Assurance is integral to our program. Each month, Jake and Steve come out and help complete projects around the property. Their support in assisting with property maintenance, horse care and barn chores help to ensure that most of the money we raise can go directly to services for the participants in our program,” says WMTRC Executive Director, Dr. Erin Bauer. Wayside House helps support women’s transition back into the community by providing a variety of services and tools in a healing environment. The goal is to help empower women to overcome their addictions and emerge as physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy women ready to maintain sobriety and thrive. To get involved and help any or all of these charities, please contact Jake Scaduto at 305-240-8948 or j.scaduto@ unitedassurance.com.

Dog Walk for H.O.P.E. 2016 was PAWS-itively PURR-fect! Community News
By Beverly Perkins
O
ver 200 people came out to participate in the 2016 Dog Walk for H.O.P.E. The fifth annual walk put together by a team of tenth grade students, Eliza Morton, Stephanie Morton and Marley Katz of Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School and Ilana Herman of New World School of the Arts was held at Highland Oaks Park. “At our first walk, sixty two people and their dogs came and we raised $622 for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Since then our walk has grown each year, and the amount of money we donate has increased,” says Eliza Morton. “At our fifth annual dog walk on February 21, 2016, we raised $1,828 for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Adding all five year’s donations together, the combined total amount is $4,754.” H.O.P.E. (Help Overcome Pet Euthanasia) was initially a contest founded by School Board Representative Dr. Martin Karp. “Our mission is to help improve the lives of sheltered dogs and cats while raising awareness of the growing amount of homeless animals,” says Stephanie Morton. “By hosting this walk, we were able to do just that by allowing animal lovers all around our community to come together and raise money to help sheltered pets at the Humane Society.” The girls used social media and created a PowerPoint presentation to spread word about the theme, “Animal Organizations” for this year’s event. However, they still went back to the basics by handing out flyers and hanging posters around the community in local schools, as well as parks and neighborhoods. The main purpose of the event is to educate people and create awareness on the benefits of pet ownership, animal organizations and TNR (Trap Neuter Release). In addition to collecting funds for the organization, they collected dog toys, food and treats and sold raffle tickets. Prizes were donated by local area sponsors, and included pet grooming and frozen yogurt gift cards. In conjunction with the dog walk the girls began TNR in their neighborhood to help reduce the amount of sick stray cats in the community. So far they have spayed and neutered 15 cats, all of which were released healthy back to where they were found.
The team has won first place for their division in each of the four previous years and is waiting to hear if they won again. Winners will be notified on May 2nd, 2016 and an award ceremony will take place May 19th at either the Humane Society or Animal Services. For more information on the Dog Walk for H.O.P.E. please visit www.hopedogwalk.weebly.com
FIDF Young Leadership Miami Leaders Raise $85,000 By Beverly Perkins
M
ore than 600 young leaders gathered in Golden Beach last month at one of South Florida’s largest homes for the biggest-ever Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Young Leadership Miami Division White Party. The event raised over $85,000 to support well-being and educational programs for the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The event included a live band and DJ and a special performance by Miami spray paint artist ATOMIK, who created a live canvas during the benefit that was then silently auctioned, fetching over $1,000. Besides the enthusiastic young leaders who attended, distinguished guests also included Golden Beach Mayor, Glenn Singer and Greenberg Traurig Senior Chairman, Cesar L. Alvarez. “This year we’ve seen scores of new faces and we’re on track to improve upon the impressive $400,000 we raised last year,” said FIDF Young Leadership Miami Co-President Jaime Mittleman. “This White Party sold out with more than 600 guests – our largest event so far. I am proud to be working with the most passionate and philanthropic young go-getters in the country.”

Funds raised at the event will go towards the FIDF DIGNITY Program, which supports Israeli soldiers in need with critical aid for basic appliances and furniture, food vouchers, special grants, and holiday gift vouchers, and FIDF’s Amir Course, which helps integrate Ethiopian-Israelis into the IDF, helping them to access more challenging and influential military positions and improve their prospects. FIDF was established in 1981 by a group of Holocaust survivors as a 501(C)(3) notfor-profit organization with the mission of providing and supporting educational, social, cultural, and recreational programs and facilities for the heroic men and women of the IDF. Today, FIDF has more than 150,000 loyal supporters, and 15 regional offices throughout the U.S. and Panama. FIDF proudly offers its support to IDF soldiers, families of fallen soldiers, and wounded veterans through a variety of unique and innovative programs. These opportunities reinforce the vital bond between the communities in the United States, the soldiers of the IDF, and the State of Israel. Publix Supermarkets was the event’s largest sponsor. The event’s theme, “Live, Laugh, Lunch” was reflected in an afternoon filled with friendship and laughter. This year’s luncheon was co-chaired by Elaine Brown and Jennifer Diemar with Glenda Krongold serving as the luncheon advisor. Her family struggled to leave the Soviet Union during the 1970s and succeeded with the help of the worldwide Jewish community. to help the children of JAFCO. “Our supporters keep surprising me with their generosity. And to see so many of them in one room with the sole mission of helping the children of JAFCO – it’s overwhelming,” said JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco. “The chapters, committee members and event chairs don’t know how to say no. They just keep on working hard and we are so appreciative.” Located in Sunrise, The JAFCO Children’s Village is a beautiful 5.6-acre residential facility including a 24-hour emergency children’s shelter and six group homes that provide a safe and loving home for up to 52 children from newborns up to 21 years of age. The state-of-the-art center (also in Sunrise) provides case management, therapy, family enrichment, resources and extended respite care. Ahava Greenbaum Shoots… and She Scores! By Beverly Perkins
Can do kid
H
ochberg Preparatory 8th grader, Ahava Greenbaum wanted to create a project incorporating her love for basketball, music and individuals with special needs. Therefore, “Points 4 Love” was born and touches on all three components relating to Ahava’s interests. As a star player on the Hochberg Prep and the MAR-JCC basketball teams, basketball was a “must” to blend into her mission of doing what she loves and to inspire others to join her. For every point the Miami Heat scored during the season, the MAR-JCC Mo Steel girls’ team would give volunteer hours to charity. In the past two years, Ahava alone completed over 925 hours which earned her the JVC Outstanding Volunteer Award. Currently, this bright young super star has created an iTunes song and video to continue raising funds and creating awareness for her initiative. “Points 4 Love” is about making a “point” to love all people, to overcome adversity and to not allow circumstances to stop one from becoming the best that they can. As a result of a determined teenager and her mother, the world will be a better place for everyone. The storyline for the video is based on, and features the real-life individuals that Ahava and her team want to help. The “Points 4 Love” (P4L) lead singer, Jeremie “Phenom” Thomas, is a wheelchair basketball player for the Miami Heat Wheels paraOlympic basketball team which won the National Championships last year. Thomas also assisted
Ahava’s mother with co-writing the song, “Points 4 Love – Stand 4 Love” and creating the tech music for the video. Seven year old fan, Miriam Goldsmith has been the inspiration behind the video. She sits on the sidelines in her wheelchair always watching the girls play ball. The young cancer survivor wishes to play as she is learning to walk again. The girls always invite her to join them and continuously give her the support and encouragement she needs. Furthermore, Ahava’s MAR-JCC basketball coach, Jeff Fogel is battling ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease. With the help of her mother Susanne Reiter, “Wheels & Waves” was organized. The basketball tournament brought awareness and funding about ALS and wheelchair basketball/paraOlympic sports. Despite not having use of his arms or legs, “Coach Jeff” still managed to take his girls’ team to win the district championships in 2015. “Points 4 Love” music video is currently in the final stages of the development process and is searching for major sponsors. All proceeds will go to help fund Miriam’s and Coach Jeff’s medical fees, ALS research as well as wheelchair basketball scholarships and equipment.

Students who receive the honorary award excel in academics, community service, citizenship, fine art, athletics and student activities. Additionally, they also display characteristics of perseverance, effort, dedication and a commitment to positive goals, as well as improvement in performance and/ or attitude. Each school may nominate up to three students.
This year, Leni Saltos (3rd grade), Sol Cohen (5th grade) and Ana Solis (6th grade) won the Star Award for Jacobson Sinai Academy. “Leni truly enjoys learning and is a seeker of knowledge which he applies to all new lessons before him,” says his teacher Laurie Firestone. “More importantly, Leni is kind, generous and honest. He greets everyone with a smile and always says please and thank you.” “Sol is a role model for her classmates. She always tries hard, is an excellent all-around student, cares about the quality of her work and is enthusiastic and responsible,” says 6th grade teachers Faye Hollman and Lauren Roisman. “Sol is a wonderful citizen and a pleasure to teach.” “Ana has been my top student for 3 years. She works extremely hard to master material learned in class. She is always willing to help others. She is responsible, respectful and truly well-rounded. She deserves to get recognition for everything she does in class and for others,” says Sharon Kochlany. “Ana is a young lady that exemplifies the characteristics of a model student. She is bright, highly motivated and strives for excellence in every task she is given,” says Ana’s other teacher Evelyn Portnoy. “Ana is also kind and caring and highly respected by her teachers and peers.”

Jacobson Sinai Pre-Schoolers Shake It Up During Purim
School News
By Beverly Perkins
P
specialist, read books and talked about the story of Purim. Some heard the story through felt board cut-outs or puppets, and Ms. Tammy’s PreK-4 class acted out the story for their parents. The most delicious tradition of the holiday is baking the triangular shaped pastry pockets filled with fruit or chocolate called hamentaschen. This anticipated activity allows students to follow a recipe while simultaneously being exposed to literacy, math, science, language skills. The social experience involves the entire class and is a highlight of the holiday. This year the Early Childhood Educational Center created a community out of boxes. The project was called “Shushan Town” and each class had a participating role. From doors and windows to towers placed, this construction enabled students to all be involved. Of course, with more fun comes more learning. This time colors, shapes, sizes, dimensions and vocabulary were taught using the Purim story characters. “Every year our children look forward to Purim as a time of joy and happiness,” says Daniel Espinosa, Marketing & Communications Coordinator for Jacobson Sinai Academy. “We are thrilled to see their always smiling faces even happier!”
urim, the festival recently celebrated amongst those that observe, commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia. Certain traditions are followed to remember the significant day such as retelling the story by reading the Megillah, exchanging gifts and food, eating celebratory meals, dressing up in costumes and reciting prayers. The Early Childhood Education Center at the Jacobson Sinai Academy did their part to celebrate the joyous holiday with their pre-schoolers. They sang songs, dressed up, made groggers (noisemakers) and had a parade. Although fun was being had, the young children were developing their motor, cognitive, communication, social and emotional development skills in the process. All activities were planned based on the age and ability of each group. Every class made their own groggers, using their imagination and fine motor skills. The noisemakers were created out of bottles, boxes, paper plates, and filled with objects that created noise. The other social activity was preparing the Shalach Manot baskets which included special treats to give and share with others. Since children learn by repetition, each class heard the Purim story many times. This allowed them to start sequencing the story and gain literacy, as well as pre-math skills. Miss Pat, the in-house music instructor, taught Purim songs, while classroom teachers and Miss Plia, the library

Anchors Away Foundation Celebrates 12th Anniversary By Beverly Perkins

t’s no sea-cret that once again the Aventura Marketing Council /World-Class Chamber of Commerce (AMC) has proved that “nothing is impossible” when a group of dedicated individuals come together to support a great cause. Together with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the AMC World-Class Chamber created the Anchors Away Foundation to teach science, math and life skills to students with physical and intellectual disabilities. For the past twelve years, the Anchors Away Foundation has been providing sailing programs for physically and intellectually disabled children thanks to a Quality of Life Grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeves Foundation. Currently 37 specially-equipped boats sail from Oleta River State Park, Miami Yacht Club and Coconut Grove Sailing Club. Over 2,500 sailing take place annually in this exceptional program. Named after the late actor, known best for his role as Superman, Christopher Reeve, the Christopher & Dana Reeves Foundation was formed. Organizations such as this want the renowned actor’s voice to still be heard. He believed that “nothing is impossible” and the journey to continue raising awareness and funding for spinal cord injury research and improving lives for those affected will not stop. The project was initiated by Dr. Jayne Greenberg, District Director of Physical
Education and Health Literacy for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, who created the Marine Academy in response to the over 1,000 students with disabilities in the school system. Under the leadership of Aventura Commissioner Billy Joel, members and friends were encouraged to purchase specially-equipped access dinghies to teach the children how to sail while expanding their horizons, increasing their self-confidence, socialization skills and preparing them for a career in the marine industry. It may take a super hero to start an important mission, but it takes a community to come together to execute it. Join the festivities beachside at Oleta River State Park located at 3400 NE 163rd Street, North Miami on Thursday, May 5th at 10:30am for the 12th Anniversary Celebration Launch of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation speciallyequipped access boat. Special guests attending the celebratory event are Miami-Dade School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Dr. Jayne Greenberg, District Director, Physical Education & Health Literacy, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Cliff Schulman, Chairman, Aventura Marketing Council Hon. Billy Joel, Chairman, Anchors Away Foundation Alan T. Brown, Director of Public Impact, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Charles E. Smith, Park Manager, Oleta River State Park. Prince, a 12 year old Maltese, spends his days relaxing like a king in Aventura. His favorite person is his human mom Dena. Together they enjoy long walks in the park. His favorite toys are actually slippers that he carries throughout the house. He dislikes staying indoors. He was last seen outside soaking up the South Florida sunshine which he absolutely loves.
