10th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic Benefits Two Local Charities community news
By Beverly Perkins
I
t’s not often that two separate events come together to benefit two Florida-based non-profit organizations during a weekend celebration. The 10th Annual Reid & Fiorentino Call of Game Dinner and Celebrity Golf Classic recently kicked off this year’s fundraiser with the Acordis Celebrity Golf Classic at the renowned Turnberry Isle Miami and concluded with a star-studded dinner at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The annual event, hosted by Eric Reid and Tony Fiorentino, the region’s leading sports media personalities and longtime Fox Sports Sun HEAT TV Broadcasters, benefits Lauren’s Kids and Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. Among the highlights was the award presentation to Miami HEAT legend Pat Riley from the also legendary head coach Don Shula. More than 50 foursomes met on the championship course for a day of golf supporting the two great causes. Before hitting the links, participants were greeted by Miami HEAT dancers, treated to gifts from Under Armour and served delicious food and drinks. Each team was paired with a celebrity team captain and had the opportunity to compete for a series of prizes which were to be awarded at the post-golf reception. Players had a number of on-course challenges and were also invited to participate in various sidebar contests, including a HoleIn-One Shootout for a chance to win a new vehicle courtesy of Palmetto 57 Nissan and Volkswagen.
Among the Golf Classic celebrity participants were Alonzo Mourning, Glen Rice, Nat Moore, Dick Anderson, Kim Bokamper, Gino Torretta and Jason Jackson. The Reid & Fiorentino festivities wrapped with the Acordis Call of Game Dinner where local TV and radio personality, Johanna Gomez, emceed and honored those that make a difference in the community by working behind the scenes. This year’s celebrated honorees included Miami HEAT’s own Pat Riley, renowned sportscaster Dick Stockton, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, and Matthew Sandusky. In addition to the celebrity-filled dinner, the evening included a silent and live auction featuring sports memorabilia, luxury vacation packages and one-of-a-kind experiences. Sponsors for the Acordis Call of the Game Dinner & Celebrity Golf Classic include Ron L. Book, PA, Doctors Hospital Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, American Airlines, Fox Sports Sun, Bloomingdale’s, Dade Media and Metro Signs. Always A Step Ahead – Lauren’s Kids’ 7th Annual “Walk in My Shoes” Kept Everyone on Their Toes By Beverly Perkins
T
housands of Floridians came out to attend the seventh annual “Walk in My Shoes” 1,500 mile journey across the state of Florida. This year the 24 day Hope & Healing Tour, for the first time, started in Panama City, Florida and concluded in South Florida with a “Buddy Bash” block party-style community education and safety fair at the Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School. The festivities featured personal safety educational activities, free food, live music, kid-friendly interactive activities and more in hopes to continue accomplishing
Lauren’s Kids’ mission to prevent and end childhood sexual abuse through awareness and education, and to help survivors heal with guidance and support. Each day Lauren and her team engaged in daily and weekly survivor-based service and community education projects, followed by daily afternoon 4.2 mile awareness walks to honor the 42 million survivors of child sexual abuse living in the U.S. today. Since its inception more than 7,500 miles have been logged and
tens of thousands of walkers have joined Lauren on her journey. “Walk in My Shoes” was created by Lauren Book, Founder and CEO of Lauren’s Kids. The Aventura based 501(c) (3) organization educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through awareness campaigns such as the annual walk, in addition to in-school curricula and speaking engagements around the country and the world. The foundation has been a crucial component in advocating the passage of nearly two dozen laws to support survivors and protect children from predators, with the ultimate goal of preventing sexual abuse. For the past seven years, “Walk in My Shoes” has given a voice to an experience shared by 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys in the United States. The walk empowers survivors, educates communities and advocates for legislative change. Education and awareness can prevent child sexual abuse by 95%. This year’s anniversary also launched Lauren’s Kids’ Guide to Hope & Healing: a free, first-of-its-kind resource for families who are dealing with the aftermath of a child’s disclosure of sexual abuse. This educational and informative book follows Lauren’s memoir, OK to Tell and her children’s book Lauren’s Kingdom. ALEXANDER FIDELMAN, CCHt HYPNOTHERAPY PRACTICE
What Is Hypnosis or How to Befriend Your Subconscious Mind For many people hypnosis is something esoteric, strange and even scary. “Will you make me cluck like chicken?”, some people ask. “Not unless you want to”. In hypnosis you are always in control. You never say or do anything that goes against your ethics and life principles. “Is hypnosis real then?”, they would continue asking. Yes it is. As real as a state of trance which is a natural God given gift. Have you ever read a book and found yourself fully engrossed in those pages? Or watched a movie and began to feel one with a character? You lose a sense of time feeling clear, focused and in the flow. Athletes call this state “in the zone”. The critical faculty of the mind is off to the side, the inner chatter is gone, your conscious and subconscious minds are one and your body’s performing at its optimal level.
As a certified clinical hypnotherapist I simply utilize this natural state to help clients reach their goals. They let go of hurt, fears and anxious feelings. Anger and guilt are replaced with forgiveness and love. You experience deep transformation and reclaim clarity and confidence. High self esteem, focus and motivation become natural. You reach the state of bliss. In my practice I use various methods of regression to the cause as well as other modalities to ensure we not only deal with the symptoms but go deeper to the very roots and reach deep transformation within.

It’s Easy Being Green - The City of Aventura Named a “Tree City USA” for 19th Year By Beverly Perkins
T
he National Arbor Day Foundation recently named the City of Aventura a Tree City USA for the 19th consecutive year. Since 1976, more than 3,400 communities across the country have committed themselves to becoming a Tree City USA. The nationwide program allows the opportunity to celebrate the importance of an urban tree canopy, to improve care of the vital city trees and provides the framework necessary to do so. In order to achieve Tree City USA status, four core standards must be met: ▸▸ A Tree Board or Department- A person must be legally responsible for the care of all trees on city-or town-owned property. Involving local residents and business owners creates awareness of what trees can do for the community while also providing and encouraging better tree care. ▸▸ A Tree Care Ordinance – A basic tree care ordinance forms the foundation of a city’s tree care program. It enables policies to be set in place with the force of law to back it up if not followed. It also provides clear instructions for planting, maintaining and removing trees from streets, parks and other public spaces. ▸▸ A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita – The valuable public assets require the necessary investment to stay healthy and sustainable. The city trees in turn provide clean air, clean water, shade and beauty. ▸▸ An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation- An annual Arbor Day ceremony completes the requirements to become a Tree City USA. Citizens are able to gather with community officials and celebrate the work accomplished and
become better educated about the program. In addition, the event exposes the younger generation to environmental quality and a green world. This year the City of Aventura celebrated their renewed status at the annual Earth Day & Arbor Day Ceremony. The festivities took place at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center where the kindergarten students from Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) performed dance and music and showcased art dedicated to the day. City officials also came out to show their Go Green spirit, as they planted trees. In addition, the City also recognized local businesses and residential communities with the 2016 Aventura GO Green Recognition Award. Those honored developed and implemented innovative programs to reduce energy consumption while encouraging sustainability. The City of Aventura’s Community Services Department conducts the annual event and is dedicated to providing Aventura residents with quality service, parks, facilities, events, programs, camps and activities. Libraries Have More Than Books – Escape into your Local Branch This Summer By Beverly Perkins
T
he Miami-Dade Public Library System invites the entire family to read this summer. There are no mandatory reading requirements, no book reports and no testing. The goal is to read for fun. Beginning June 11th – August 6th, everyone can participate in the summer reading programs offered at all MiamiDade libraries. Although each branch offers different activities and special events, children, teens and adults are all encouraged to enjoy some cool and quiet time at their local library. Anyone who reads or listens to a book or attends a library event for one hour qualifies to be entered to win prizes. From family story times, baby and me groups to chess club, video games and film clubs, the libraries aim to have activities for all ages. For example, the Northeast Dade-Aventura and Sunny Isles branches invite little ones to come in their pajamas for a bedtime story with their teddy bears, while teens can participate in the Super Smash Brothers Summer Bash. Children ages 8 and up can learn to play chess or sharpen their skills by playing with others who enjoy the classic game. Seniors also have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers on various health topics. See the calendar on page 6 for just some dates and times of the mentioned activities.
In addition to the series of events and programs, eighteen Miami-Dade branches will be hosting a free lunch program for kids 18 and under from June 13th to August 12th. The free lunches are made possible through the Healthy Body Healthy Mind™ program provided by the Sisters for Abundant Living as part of the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Summer BreakSpot program. The hot lunches meet the nutritional USDA guidelines and will be served on a first come, first served basis and no registration is required. The free lunches will be served Mondays through Fridays at 12:30pm at the following libraries: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

MAR-JCC Girls Are “TuTu” Cute as They Bring Home Top Dance Awards
school news
By Beverly Perkins
T
he Michael-Ann Russell (MAR) JCC Bamachol Dance Jazz Team recently performed at the Kids Artistic Revue (KAR) National Dance Competition which was held at Broward Community College Theater. The talented team won Elite Top First in their category of Jazz ages 9-11, along with a Judges Choice award for “Fabulous Formations” and were selected as “All Star Dancers” with an invitation to attend an upcoming dance convention in New York City. This energetic bunch executed a brilliant performance as they proudly represented the Bamachol Dance Program and the MAR-JCC. Bamachol is the Hebrew word which means “in the dance”. The MAR-JCC is honored to bring the Israeli concept of “dance academy” to its Aventura students. The Israeli Dance program happens to be one of the most popular in the South Florida community. The Bamachol Dance Program enables children to grow physically, socially, artistically, and creatively. The program promotes skill development, friendship, mutual respect, and Jewish Culture under the supervision of a highly qualified and talented staff. Classes begin at grade PK4 all the way up to high school, college and even adult programs. Each age group and class level allows each child to advance at their own pace based on their interest and talent. The older groups from grade 5 through college
participate in performances and dance festivals in many parts of the U.S. and abroad such as Orlando, New York, Vancouver, Mexico, Panama, Sao Paulo and Israel. “Our Michael-Ann Russell’s Jazz Team achievements certainly make us very proud! All dancers put maximum efforts and commitment to our Bamachol Dance Program and having them receive the Elite Top First Place in their category is just a great recognition”, says Roger D. Weiger, Bamachol Dance Program Director. “We are also very proud of our dance coach, Joanne “Poki” Niego, for receiving a special Jury Award for ‘Fantastic Formations’ and for instilling in our dancers a passion for dance!” For more information on the Bamachol Dance Program, please contact Roger Weiger at 305-932-4200 ext. 152 or visit www. marjcc.org.
Paintings and Collages and Science Fair Projects…Oh My! By Beverly Perkins
Hundreds of parents and students, from the ECE to eighth grade, attended the Jacobson Sinai Academy (JSA) 2016 Art & Science Fair this spring. The entire exhibit was the creation of the talented JSA students. From the artwork to this year’s logo, each and every piece was designed and showcased by the students. The turn-out was bigger and better than expected, as many were there to support the arts and to show appreciation of the young artists’ work. Art is an integral part of the JSA curriculum, providing students with valuable fine art and graphic design experience during classroom interaction. The exhibition reflected the lessons that students completed in the art classroom throughout the year. With guidance from art instructors Mora Tina Ohayon and Mrs. Sandra Resler, students used the knowledge they gained on the elements and principles of design, art history and art appreciation to create state-of-the-art pieces. Most of the artwork were inspirations from various Master Artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miro and more. Sculptures made of recyclable items, 3D-paper structures, Large Sierpinski Pyramid, acrylic and watercolor paintings, clay reliefs, oil pastels, colored pencils, charcoal drawings and illustrations, paper-mâché, collages, Keith Haring t-shirts, caricatures and loom weavings all lined the walls to form an eclectic display of talent and creativity. In addition to the artistic creations, science projects were also on display. The Art & Science Fair highlighted the winners of JSA’s Annual Science Fair, who were awarded their prizes earlier in the month. The winners of the Science Fair projects were available to explain their experiments and walk the audience through the steps of the scientific process. The science portion of the display also included the winning animal masks from the Fairchild Botanical Garden Challenge interschools contest. A fine display of prototypes of prosthetic hands was also showcased to model principles of design and engineering. “It gave me Goosebumps when I entered the social hall because I was immediately stunned by, not just quantity but, the quality of work our talented students produced”, says JSA Art Teacher, Sandra Resler. “It’s unbelievable to think that that was just a sample of everything they created and learned throughout the school year. I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them!”

There’s A New Sheriff in Town - Fulford Elementary Students Visit the NMB Police Department school news
By Beverly Perkins
F
ulford Elementary School students had the opportunity to visit the City of North Miami Beach Police Department as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce and expose students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. The program began 24 years ago and today 60 elementary schools, 423 teachers and administrators and more than 400 volunteers from 90 South Florida businesses participate serving 6,000+ students. Sixty percent of which are minorities who qualify for free or reduced lunch. This type of learning is crucial for the youth of today to be successful in life. Throughout the year students are taught work place ethics, career choices, team building, leadership skills and communication. The curriculum presented consists of eight lessons, each of which feature a work-related concept. The lessons are age appropriate, interactive and of course,
educational. Making children aware of work in the real world can be structured into every aspect of a student’s life without them even realizing it. Suggestions are also made in each lesson connecting career themes to other subject areas which allow teachers to reinforce them in a cross curriculum. Fulford Elementary has partnered with KAPOW for the past 6 years. There are so many opportunities that students get to become exposed to, and this time the second grade Hawks got to see how the City’s police department operates. The students were able to get inside the official vehicles, watch K9 training and ask plenty of questions. They also got to see how equipment works and be educated on what it takes to be an officer. There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment. However, along with learning there still is fun. John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a reason for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading, writing, and math are vital to success, in school, work, and life.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

organizations that directly or indirectly touch students in the Miami-Dade County School District. “Teaching financial literacy to students and sharing the resources available at onUp.com begins an important conversation about making smart financial choices,” said Margaret Callihan, Chairman, President and CEO of SunTrust South Florida. “Through our partnership with the Miami Dolphins, we help students at Miami Norland High School understand how to avoid financial pitfalls and achieve a financially fit life.” Callihan and Thomas, along with Miami Norland High School Principal Reginald E. Lee, lead the students through three topical discussions: setting financial goals, renting vs. buying and the pros and cons of homeownership. The one-hour exercise concluded with a game to challenge the students and a raffle for a Michael Thomas autographed Miami Dolphins helmet. “Having Michael Thomas and SunTrust visit today really made an impact on the students and the way they learn and view finance,” Miami Norland High School Principal Reginald E. Lee said. “The Dolphins and SunTrust have and continue to be great community partners in our school, and we’re always delighted to have them around the students shaping their future.” In celebration of Financial Literacy initiatives, SunTrust recently launched a national movement to move people from financial stress to financial confidence. Please visit www.onUp.com to take a financial quiz and learn more.

“Snuggles”
Get the 411 on Vein Disease
T
here are certain signs and symptoms that indicate a vein problem that is more than just cosmetic. The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous insufficiency, and this can progress to more serious consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including swelling, skin changes and ulceration. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and often are part of a greater circulatory problem. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated and will require more extensive treatment in the future. Left untreated, varicose veins will increase in size and number. Symptoms may worsen and can lead to leg swelling, chronic skin changes such as dermatitis and discoloration – and in severe cases, non-healing ulcerations. These problems make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time, which in turn may affect a person’s activity level and quality of life. Varicose veins may also indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. Consequently, proper medical evaluation and treatment of varicose veins is important. Those most at risk for developing varicose veins and related issues are women. They are more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men, though men make up about 20 percent of our patients. Varicose veins may develop during pregnancy or as the result of hormonal changes during menopause. Family history can put you at higher risk, and those suffering from obesity are more likely to have varicose veins. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms. Dr. Soffer is recognized as one of the leading vein experts in the United States and trains physicians from around the world on advanced vein treatment techniques. Soffer Health has offices in Aventura, Pembroke Pines, Doral, Hialeah/Miami Lakes, North Miami, Deerfield Beach.
