What A Great Time To Be Alive

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control, the life expectancy of an average American will soon be greater than 80 years. A century ago it was 50. Child mortality has never been lower. Today, almost everyone has access to virtually all of the world’s collective knowledge literally at their fingertips thanks to mobile phones. Our children live in a world where technologies they take for granted could not have been imagined just ten or 20 years ago. Technology has created a global world, and South Florida is a true melting pot. The blending of South American, European and traditional American cultures has created a truly unique place for us to raise our families and live in peace. Experience all that the region has to offer by taking advantage of the calendar section of Our City magazine. Each month we include a curated list of diverse community activities and events, which appeal to a wide range of people and interests. So go watch a show, attend a charity event, join a book club or even learn to dance. And, when you do, pinch yourself; for it truly is a great time to be alive! Sincerely,

It Was a Purr-fect Day - Furry Friends Find Fur-Ever Homes community news

By Beverly Perkins

I

t was a great day this summer when animals across the country were adopted during “Clear the Shelters”, a nationwide event with 680 participating shelters. The event initiated by NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo Stations Groups was more successful this year than in 2015 with 2,000 more families taking home pets. Thousands of dogs and cats now have homes thanks to the incredible adoption event including those from the Humane Society of Greater Miami. They were one of four South Florida shelters participating. “We are overjoyed to see so many of our animals finally go home to loving families they can call their own,” says Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director. “It’s so difficult to express in words the emotions that the staff and volunteers feel on a day like today. So much hard work goes into making sure qualified families find their perfect match; and although we are sad to see them go, we are thrilled they

have found their forever homes. Not only did we exceed last year’s adoption count, but some of our senior animals and Second Chance fund babies went to great homes. ” The Humane Society of Greater Miami ended the day with a total of 97 adoptions, which is ten times the number of adoptions on an average day at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center. “We are so grateful to NBC, Telemundo and all the families who came out on Saturday, added Hoffman. “Our shelter is almost completely clear as a result of this amazing event!” The efforts of NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo Stations Group to connect pets across the country with forever families are deeply appreciated by the shelters involved and animal lovers alike. Every pet deserves a loving and permanent home, and “Clear the Shelters” provided an impactful push to help get each and every one of them there. The Humane Society of Greater Miami, a private not-for-profit, 501 (c) (3) charitable animal welfare organization, is a limited admit, adoption guarantee facility dedicated to placing every dog and cat in their care into a loving home. Every animal admitted is free from the threat of euthanasia due to time, space, or treatable medical issues. Responsible pet ownership and spray/neuter programs are also offered. The Soffer and Fine Adoption Center is open Tuesday through Sunday 11:00am – 7:00pm -16101 W. Dixie Hwy., North Miami Beach – 305-696-0800.

Gallery Owners Give the Gift of Art from Their Hearts By Beverly Perkins

T

he 5th annual event, “Art from the Heart” sponsored by Barker Animation Art Galleries showcases art from the past this year. The 2016 art exhibit is all part of the Barkers “Back to the Past Storytelling Collection”. The assortment of generous gifted artwork features some iconic cartoon characters such as Garfield, Popeye, The Beatles and Betty Boop. The event is open to the public on September 21st at 11:30 am at the Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus Sanctuary in a space sponsored by Hochberg Preparatory School. The Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce eligible member charities, non-profits and religious organizations in good standing will receive five pieces of framed artwork (22”x18”) valued at $2,000 per gift compliments of Gloria and Herb Barker, owners of Barker Animation Galleries in The Village at Gulfstream Park and The Promenade Coconut Creek. The benevolent couple started this annual tradition six years ago when they wanted to thank the Aventura Marketing Council (AMC) for all their help and support as they opened their business in The Village at Gulfstream Park. The Barkers offered to give the AMC some artwork for their office. However, due to difficulties in the economy at that time, the AMC wanted to give the artwork to their member charities, non-profits and schools so they could auction them off to raise much needed funds for their organizations, donate them or hang them in their facilities.

North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo with Susan Sandness, NMB Library Manager along with Gloria and Herb Barker

The Barkers, already extremely charitable, were thrilled with the idea and “Art from the Heart” was born. The first year there were seventy members eligible to receive the decorative gifts. Coincidentally, the ten year anniversary of 9/11 was being remembered and the Barkers wanted to recognize the time as well. During the time of the 9/11 attacks, over $30 million of artwork was lost and destroyed so it was only fitting that the Barkers donated the historic mixed media lithograph “Statue of Liberty Centennial” created by international artist Melanie Taylor Kent in 1986 to commemorate the

100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. The thoughtful gallery owners found it appropriate to recognize first responders, law enforcement, fire rescue and emergency personnel who risked and sacrificed their lives then, and today, to protect our freedom and liberty. “Our Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber is very fortunate to have many charities and non-profits as members, and this event gives us the opportunity to help them raise funds and recognize their sponsors,” says Elaine Adler, President of the Aventura Marketing Council. Members must pre-register to receive the artwork gifts by email to rachael@acouncil.com. Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus – Sanctuary – 20350 NE 26th Avenue, North Miami Beach, 33180 at 11:30am.

NMB Police Department K9 Unit Receives Life-Saving Donation from Local Organization community news

By Beverly Perkins

S

outh Florida’s non-profit organization, “Protect the Paws-A K-9 Cause”, has a “vested” interest in protecting K9s throughout the country. The small grass roots charity has been raising funds to protect the canines assisting police officers since 2011. Four dedicated women wanted to give back to their communities by protecting these K-9 heroes. The idea stemmed from reading an article about a young child who asked his family and friends to donate money to purchase a bullet proof vest for a police K-9 in lieu of receiving birthday presents. They were able to partner with the also non-profit 501 (c) Associated Humane Societies, New Jersey who has a dedicated vested interest fund and has donated over 1,600 bullet proof vests throughout the country. Since its inception, this ambitious south Florida

group has been able to present 59 vests to 16 local police departments including The North Miami Beach Police Department’s K-9 Unit. They recently received a donation of five new K-Max ballistic vests. These Kevlar Level II bullet proof vests are made by Protective Products in Pompano Beach and cost $724 each. Each dog is measured to ensure a proper fit. The K-Max design gives canine officers incomparable protection, comfort and a full range of mobility while inspiring confidence for the K-9 handlers. The newly designed K-Max ballistic vest covers the vital organs of the

canine to protect from life-threatening wounds as a result of gunfire. A plaque was presented to “Protect the Paws” to show the department’s appreciation for all their efforts in keeping police officers and their K-9 partners safe in a ceremony held at the North Miami Beach Police Department. To make a tax deductible donation, please make a check payable to Associated Humane Societies and note “Protect the Paws” on the memo line. Mail to Protect the Paws - 11731 SW 117th Terrace, Miami, FL. 33186. A tax-deductible receipt will be mailed back to you.

Board Member and event co-chair Adam Lipkin. “We have seen our circle grow larger and larger each year. This pool party was an excellent way for our young leaders to show their support for Israel’s brave defenders – and to have a great time.” “The amazing turnout shows the tremendous dedication of Miami’s young Jewish leaders, who came out on Sunday afternoon to show their support for the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces.” says FIDF YL Miami Co-President Jaime Mittleman. “I want to express my gratitude to everyone who took the time to come and help make a meaningful difference in the lives of wounded Israeli veterans and the families of fallen heroes. It’s important for the wounded soldiers of the IDF and the families of the fallen to know that they are loved and supported. his past summer the Gale South Beach rooftop pool was the gathering place for over 150 young professionals who support the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Young Leadership (YL) Miami Division. The fourth annual “Summer Pool Party” raised funds to help wounded Israeli soldiers and the families of fallen heroes. The fundraiser included complimentary drinks from sponsors, Vita Coco and L’CHAIM. L’CHAIM provided the kosher wine for poolside sangrias while Miami’s very own DJ Danny Stern created an upbeat afternoon with a special musical performance. “We are honored to have such a passionate and active community in Miami,” said FIDF YL Miami

Among the distinguished guests were FIDF YL Miami Co-President Jaime Mittleman and FIDF YL Miami Committee Members Michelle Ben Ari, Max Baum, Tal Dardashti, Ross Fahrer, Greg Hack, Hadas Mizrahi, Jaime Wasser and Edou Zaken. The event raised some $3,600, which will go towards FIDF programs supporting well-being initiatives for wounded Israeli soldiers and families of fallen soldiers. Lipkin further added, “These events allow us to stand alongside those who serve and protect the Jewish homeland. American Jewish Committee (AJC) Commemorates the 22nd Anniversary of AMIA Tragedy By Beverly Perkins

A

little over two decades ago, the AMIA bombing was an attack on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (Argentine Israelite Mutual Association). Argentina has the largest Jewish population in Latin America and the sixth in the world outside of Israel with a community of 230,000 people. This was the deadliest Argentina bombing killing 85 people and injuring hundreds. This past July, hundreds of members of the community stood side-by-side in solidarity remembering the lives taken in the AMIA bombing, and making sure that their memories would never be extinguished. AJC‘s Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs hosted the community-wide event in Miami commemorating the 22st anniversary of the AMIA bombing at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center. An impressive number of over 40 Jewish organizations from South Florida joined AJC for this unique annual initiative.

10

Over 450 people were in attendance, among them, a long list of VIPs from various backgrounds. Consuls from: Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Peru, Spain, Brazil, and El Salvador, Florida State Representative Barbara Watson; Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, Miami Dade County Commission; Mayor Enid Weisman, City of Aventura, and Vice Mayor Commissioner Denise Landman, City of Aventura were also present at the event. Representatives from the offices of Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Carlos Curbelo, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, as well as over a dozen rabbis and religious leaders from other denominations. Rose Rubin, President Elect of the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center welcomed the audience, followed by Juan Dircie, Associate Director of Latin American Task Forces for The Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs, AJC. Dircie shared AJC’s long time commitment and work in bringing justice to the AMIA case, and the importance of

keeping alive the memory of those who perished at the horrendous terrorist attack, perpetrated by radical Islamic forces guided by Iran. A central and emotional moment of the event was the candle lighting ceremony. One candle was lit for each of the 85 victims of the bombing, while their photos were shown in the large screen and the names of the victims were read aloud followed by a strong “Presente!” from the audience. Consul General of Argentina

Marcelo Giusto highlighted in his speech some of the specific measures taken by the new Argentine government to advance the AMIA investigation, while repeating the demand to bring justice after 22 years. “AJC‘s Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs is proud to be the convener of this unique event, said Juan Dircie. “This is the only yearly program in which South Florida Jewish organizations from all backgrounds gather together.”

Or have you ever tried affirmations - personal declarations - and no matter how many times you affirm something to yourself, it does not seem to become your reality? “I am confident, healthy and strong.” And the inner voice whispers (or sometimes shouts), “NO, YOU ARE NOT!” This is the voice of an INNER CRITIC. This is also a sign of self-sabotage or what is known as CONSCIOUS/ SUBCONSCIOUS CONFLICT. Hypnotherapy is one of the fastest ways to resolve this conflict. What classes and training do you provide?

Nexus provides classes and training for shooters at all levels. We have classes for concealed weapons permits, first time shooters, women and youth and basic firearm operation for all different gun types. We offer advanced training every Wednesday and Thursday night with our Elite drills. Nexus also offers private lessons to custom tailor the training to the individual’s needs. All classes are taught by our highly experienced NRA certified instructors.

Is it expensive to visit Nexus Shooting? You

might think we are the most expensive shooting range in the world based on the high level of amenities and the first class environment we provide, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. All of our pricing is comparable to any local store and range. We understand that our guests work hard for their money, and we feel that Nexus provides a nicer environment and experience for the same price. Who wouldn’t want to drive a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota? That’s the value we provide.

Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www. NexusShooting.com.

For the Love of Literature – Little Free Libraries By Beverly Perkins

O

nce Upon a Time not too long ago North Miami Mayor Smith Joseph unveiled the first “Little Free Library” in North Miami in an effort to give the children in the community more access to books. These little libraries encourage reading, sharing and recycling. The first Little Free Library is at the Mayor’s Monarch Butterfly Garden located in front of the Community Planning & Development building. The plan is for five more to be placed throughout North Miami to make reading accessible to everyone. These locations now include: W. J. Bryan Elementary School, 1201 NE 125th Street, and the Sunkist Grove Community Center, 12500 NW 13th Avenue. The notion “Take A Book, Return A Book” couldn’t be more simple. It’s a borrowing system that the community gets to enjoy. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. “The City-wide literacy movement began with me just taking an hour to read with students at the North Miami Library, and now has transformed tremendously,” says Mayor Smith Joseph. “The idea to have these little libraries started with my wife, Patricia St. Vil-Joseph who’s an avid reader. It’s our hope that these Little Free Libraries will sprout everywhere as the project is embraced by neighborhoods, schools, homeowner associations, and businesses.” Little Free Libraries is not a regular library in a large structure with librarians, thousands of books and hours of operation. One doesn’t need a library card either. These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look similar to a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their

favorite literature and stories in a fun and unusual way. The concept started in Wisconsin in 2009 by Todd Bol who wanted to honor his mother, a beloved school teacher, who loved reading. He built a small model of a schoolhouse, filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard with a sign that said, “FREE BOOKS”. This little library that could, currently shares nearly 10 million books a year, and has over 15,000 registered Little Free Libraries which can be found all over the world from Iceland to Pakistan with more on the way. In order for this non-profit organization to live happily ever after, donations are crucial for survival. If you have gently-used paperbacks or hardcovers you’d like to contribute, please place them in the Little Free Library nearest you, or bring them to the North Miami Parks & Recreation Administrative Office located at 12300 NE 8th Avenue, North Miami. To learn more about these Little Free Libraries, please call 305-895-9840 or visit littlefreelibrary.org and/or northmiamifl. gov.

“Shvitz”ing for a Great Cause community news

By Beverly Perkins

A

s if South Florida isn’t hot enough during the summer, forty-four young professionals gathered to “shvitz” a little more. “Shvitz” is the Yiddush word meaning “to sweat”. This group did indeed do that as they joined together at Flywheel Sports in North Miami to support educational and well-being programs for the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Young Leadership (YL) “Shvitz” spin class was a sold-out event. Sponsored by Flywheel Sports, Cold Pressed Raw Kitchen and GLAMSQUAD, participants enjoyed perks for attending the early morning workout. Flywheel Sports donated the stateof-the-art high tech cycling venue. GLAMSQUAD, one of Miami’s best hair and makeup apps donated $25 gift cards to be used for the company’s makeup services. Lastly, Cold Pressed Raw Kitchen, a local Miami juice company founded by active FIDF supporter Tatiana Peisach, served up some fresh juices for the spinners. Flywheel Sports instructor and FIDF supporter Jessica Bielski led an intense spin class. Bielski’s three uncles helped

Being an active FIDF member is the first step in ensuring that those who defend the Jewish

“We are honored to have such a passionate and active community in Miami,” said Lipkin. “I feel it’s my responsibility as an American Jew to support Israeli soldiers – and the families of fallen soldiers – so they know that we are here for them.” For more information on the Friends of Israel Defense Force (FIDF), please visit www.fidf. org or to get involved with FIDF Young Leadership in Miami, please email lauren. masuzzo@fidf.org or call 305-354-8233.

Arnold Kovelman financial advisor, wealth management

A

s a parent or grandparent, you are probably aware that the cost of living has increased, and college expenses are no different. University tuition and fees have increased approximately two times the inflation rate with the average cost of a private four year college education exceeding $198,770 for a student starting next year. There is good news that several options are available to help prepare for this important milestone, including 529 college savings plans which have revolutionized the way for investors to save for college. With these plans, there is flexibility and control, providing benefits that other education savings programs do not offer. Firstly, money deposited into a 529 savings plan accumulates free of federal taxes, as long as the funds are used for qualified college expenses. In various states throughout the country, additional tax incentives are offered. Secondly, you maintain complete control over how the funds will be used. If the individual does not wind up attending college, the beneficiary can be changed to someone else. An adult can even name themselves as a beneficiary and take classes at a local college, or earn an additional degree. In terms of dollar amounts, the annual gift tax exclusion is $14,000 per individual. This IRS rule allows contributors to fund a 529 account as per the maximum amounts mentioned. For those who want to give a one-time gift, or help a future college student’s fund catch up, an individual can gift $70,000 to treat the contribution as if it were made over a five year period. A one-time gift of this amount for a new baby or young child has the potential to grow to cover all related expenses for a four year university. This includes state colleges, private universities, a semester abroad or even an accredited international institution. Many students now-a-days have opportunities to travel to another country for a semester or a year which not only allows them to study, but also to experience other cultures and open their eyes to the world. The experience is amazing, but it can come with a cost that some parents didn’t plan for. Utilizing a 529 savings plan can make financial sense. If there is a good chance that a child in the family will be attending college, setting up a 529 savings plan is an advantaged financial vehicle to allow your money to grow tax free. College expenses are high, growing and proper planning for the future can benefit you and your family. * The College Board (2016), IRS.gov Arnold Kovelman is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley located at 20807 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura. By North Miami Beach Chief of Police William “Bill” Hernandez, MSM

A

s the new school year begins, it is important to keep traffic safety in mind. At arrival and dismissal times, school areas are congested: drivers are often in a hurry and harried which can lead to unsafe conditions for students and others walking, bicycling and driving in the school areas. In this vein, the North Miami Beach Police Department ( NMBPD) joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA) in its nationwide campaign: “THINK SAFE, RIDE SAFE, BE SAFE”, to encourage parents and students to exercise care and caution whether traveling to school by bus, bike, foot or car.

police chief’s message

BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS THINK SAFETY

Adults:

▸▸ Be alert. ▸▸ Slow down. ▸▸ Yield to pedestrians, crossing guards in crosswalks. ▸▸ Avoid double-parking or stopping in crosswalks to let children out of the car. Doubleparking blocks visibility for other children and vehicles. ▸▸ Comply with school drop-off and pick-up procedures. ▸▸ Watch for marked school zones, areas near bus stops and bike lanes. ▸▸ Be vigilant, expect the unexpected. Children are unpredictable and tend to ignore hazards and take risks. ▸▸ Remind the children/passengers, if you are part of a carpool, that seatbelts are a must. Not only are seatbelts are the law, they save thousands of lives a year. ▸▸ Do not text and drive. ▸▸ Advise your children that drivers are not the only ones to obey the rules of the road.

Children:

▸▸ Tell your children to cross streets only at the crosswalks or stoplights before crossing. ▸▸ Tell them to avoid walking or riding bikes behind school buses and other dangerous blind spots. ▸▸ Practice school bus safety. School bus fatalities can occur when kids run out in front of the bus. ▸▸ Make sure your children know they should walk where they can see the bus driver. ▸▸ Remind your children to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching from the curb, and to look both ways to see that no other traffic is coming prior to crossing the street.

Bike Riders: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter the length of the ride. Always ride on the right side in the same direction as vehicular traffic. Always use appropriate hand signals. Wear bright-colored clothing to increase visibility, white or light-colored clothing and/or reflective gear is especially important after dark. ▸▸ Know the “rules of the road”.

It is worth remembering that exercising a little extra care and caution, drivers and pedestrians can share the road safely in the school zones. In addition to thinking safety, the start of the new school year is exciting, but also can bring some anxiety, especially when it comes to the unknown. Therefore, parents should take a few minutes to ask their children what they are mostly looking forward to during the school year, and what things may cause them to worry. By giving them a forum to express their concerns, parents can help them clear up any issues, such as bullying, which could lead to a bumpy start to the school year.

Male Midlife Crisis for Dummies BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED SURGEON

ask the expert

pet section of the head month

Nano is a 3 year old Teacup Yorkshire Terrier. His favorite person is his human mommy Lily. When he’s not playing with his little blue ball, he can be found playing with his big brother, Aries. He loves taking naps on his human daddy’s chest, but dislikes wearing clothes no matter how cute he looks them. He was last seen enjoying a little South Florida sunshine at the doggie beach.

G

uys, this article is all about you. Ladies, take some notes. Having just turned 52, and after 10 years of optimizing men’s health, I thought I would share some of my insights about the male Mid Life Crisis. As men get older many get to a point where they start to act a bit strange. They buy uncomfortable sports cars, they try to flirt with younger women, and they even try to dress and act younger (i.e. skinny jeans). Many of their loved ones ask why. The answer is a hot topic that’s getting hotter, testosterone. In a nutshell testosterone is the male hormone. It defines and shapes masculinity. Testosterone is so crucial to masculinity that the male embryo will develop as a female if it does not receive the requisite testosterone input. As we all know testosterone surges at puberty transforming boys into men. The hormone will peak in the mid-twenties and will begin a steady decline. By 50 many men have half the testosterone in their bodies than they once did when they were 20. There are noticeable changes that come with this drop. I will cover just two of these changes in order of importance (to most men). Decreased sex drive: Testosterone levels correlate well with sex drive. Low levels result in low libido, infrequent erections, and decreased ejaculate volume. This decrease in sex drive is a true relationship killer. Intimacy and sex are crucial components of a healthy relationship. Due to the low testosterone levels, the man feels like his woman isn’t “doing it” for him, he will not seem interested in her, and the novice mistake is thinking that a younger woman -- in a convertible -- might fix the way he feels. The reality is that he finds the convertible uncomfortable, and he can’t keep up with the younger woman. Ladies, you know how that scenario plays out. You feel less connected to your man, and you start to withdraw. The outcome is the deterioration of many happy marriages. With ideal levels a man feels more confident and his role in a relationship is optimal. Decreased energy and stamina: For those who don’t know, testosterone also allows for muscle growth. When Mr. Olympia comes out on stage, he is the product of extremely high doses of testosterone, and a lot of work and discipline. Such high doses are unhealthy. On the other hand, low testosterone leads to loss of muscle mass, as well as inability to put on muscle despite long hours at the gym. There is less energy and a general depressed attitude. This might be seen by some as “he has mellowed out in his old age.” This mellowness could be a red flag for low testosterone. When levels are normalized the clock is reversed: great gains are seen at the gym with less effort, the body recovers better from strenuous activity and the chance of injury is decreased, energy levels increase, and the ability to focus improves. So guys, if you feel like you’re missing something, and think that a younger woman and a convertible will do the trick, think instead that it might be your testosterone level. Get it checked, get it fixed, and enjoy the back nine. Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
