Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.

Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new

tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy

techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

he third annual Celebrate the Arts Day was a huge success. This year’s event inspired artistic creativity with plenty of hands-on activities for all ages, as well as art appreciation with exhibits and performances by Weston students. As in past years, the graffiti wall was the most popular attraction. The giant plywood structure stretched 28 feet long and seven feet tall providing plenty of space for everyone to express themselves while discovering their inner artist. Creative expression is what Celebrate the Arts Day is all about. Children were encouraged to exhibit their artistic talent at the Young At Art Museum’s open air studio, while aspiring musicians of all ages could try out trombones, violins, drums, guitars and other instruments at the hands-on “Instrument Petting Zoo”. Weston students played a prominent role in this year’s program. Drama, band and chorus students from both Cypress Bay High School and The Sagemont School performed throughout the afternoon. The Cypress Bay photography club and ceramics club each featured hands-on activities, while the National Junior Honor Society from Tequesta Trace Middle School hosted a booth recognizing the literary arts. Celebrate the Arts Day was presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, City of Weston and Weston Town Center. It was an official Broward 100 event - Celebrating the Art of Community.

It has become one of Broward County’s largest free musical events. Presented by the City of Weston and the Rotary Club of Weston, the annual Free Concert in the Park brings live national acts to our hometown. Concert organizers strive to find acts that represent different musical genres in order to keep the show fresh and exciting. This year’s concert, the 10th annual, was held on March 1st. It welcomed the legendary Charlie Daniels Band, with opening act Wet Willie. Past concerts have attracted Starship featuring Mickey Thomas with Christopher Cross, Blue Oyster Cult and the Outlaws, among other performers. This family-friendly concert draws all ages and big crowds so guests come early to make an evening of it. Many families bring along a picnic dinner and games to entertain the children until the concert starts. The City even provides bounce houses to entertain little ones.

He has been a physical education teacher for nearly 30 years – and has been at Indian Trace Elementary since 1992. He understands the importance of engaging children in exercise while promoting good sportsmanship and teamwork. Campers at Mark at the Park enjoy an action-packed day camp program housed on the school campus. Children are engaged in exciting games, stimulating activities and fun-filled field trips. here’s no better place to be seen than Weston’s Hometown July 4th Parade. Thousands of people decked out in red, white and blue line the streets around Weston Town Center for this popular annual event. In addition to the thousands of spectators, the parade itself features hundreds of participants walking, marching or riding in the parade. It’s a chance for local civic clubs, religious and community organizations, and businesses, as well as children’s programs such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to show their patriotic pride. The festivities also feature music and dancers. Each year, the City selects a Grand Marshal. This past year, Roy Rogers was recognized for his contributions to our community. As the vice president of planning and development for Arvida, the developer of Weston, he was largely responsible for the “Weston look” that identifies our city. He was also recognized for his efforts to educate Weston students about the environment and to preserve nature by developing Peace Mound Park.

From its location in Markham Park, Camp Chameleon encourages the enjoyment of the outdoors and teaches children a true appreciation for nature. Campers will hike, fish and learn about plants and animals during naturalist-guided tours. Children stay active with a variety of non-competitive sports and good old-fashioned games like kickball, wiffle ball, boxball and gaga ball. The camp also promotes participation in creative arts, dance, music, and camp talent shows. And no summer camp experience would be complete without the popular Color War! Campers enjoy daily field trips to local pools and aquatic parks, along with other favorite indoor destinations such as bowling, skating, laser tag, movies and museums, to name just a few. Camp Chameleon offers programs for children ages five to 15 (kindergarten through middle school), as well as a Counselor in Training program for students entering 9th and 10th grades. Camp Chameleon runs three three-week sessions running from June 8th to August 7th. Flexible weekly schedules are also available. The event, which is presented by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, is designed to educate the community on all of the resources available to keep residents safe. BSO is out in full force, showcasing its impressive fleet of fire and rescue trucks, motorcycles, helicopters, and other emergency vehicles. Always popular with the kids are BSO’s four-legged members, such as a bomb sniffing dog or horse from the BSO Mounted Unit. This past year, Winter Safety Expo guests also had the opportunity to admire and explore a Coast Guard helicopter, Florida Highway Patrol and U.S. Postal Inspectors mobile command center trucks, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol boat, and meet members of the Department of Homeland Security’s Black Hawk special response team. The family-friendly evening also features plenty of entertainment and children’s activities including games, bounce houses and a DJ. There are also informational booths and educational displays.
