Happy Valentine’s Day!
I
t ’ s hard to believe it ’ s February already. It
seems like just yesterday we were ushering in 2015. If you’re like most of us, the New Year’s resolution is already broken. The kids are back into their school and sports routines and we are back to work, but daydreaming of summer vacation. It’s also the time to make plans for a romantic evening with your special someone this Valentine’s Day. While we contemplate which gift to purchase, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that the gift comes from the heart and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love.

Learn about Davie’s Pioneers at the Old Davie School Historical Museum By Debby Teich
Volunteers reenact pioneer life during the 2014 Orange Blossom Festival.
I
f you have ever wondered how Davie’ s pioneers lived without
all of today’s modern conveniences, visit the Pioneer Village area of the Old Davie School Historical Museum. During the Orange Blossom Festival, volunteers will give visitors a taste of what life was like in the early 1900’s. Reenactments will be held on February 28 and March 1, from 12 to 2. Wearing long dresses and bonnets, volunteers will take visitors on a tour of a replica of a one room house from 1909. They will explain how the pioneers lived without electricity, shared one bed, used an outhouse, pumped their own water, sewed quilts, and more. Visitors can also sample food that was cooked on the fire pit, such as pineapple upside down cake, coffee, green beans and soup. During the Festival, free guided tours of the Old Davie School Historical Museum will also be available each day at 12noon, 1pm and 2pm. The museum

contains Seminole Indian artifacts, an old gas pump, a mounted 14.5 foot alligator and other wildlife from the Everglades, photos from the Great Flood, and more. “Just over a hundred years ago, there was land as far as the eye could see,” said Leslie Schroeder, Director of the Old Davie School Historical Musuem. “The completely renovated museum tells the story of how the Everglades were drained, the land was sold to entrepreneurial pioneers, and the town and old school were developed. It includes the trials and tribulations the pioneers endured from alligators and mosquitoes to hurricanes and floods. It’s a fascinating story of commitment, dedication and perseverance.” The north wall of the old school café will soon have a beautiful mural painted on it by muralist Andrew Reid. Thanks to the Broward 100 Mural Project, the Old School was chosen as one of nine spots around the county to receive a mural. Workshops will be held soon for community input. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located on the south side of Griffin Road. To reach it from the Orange Blossom Festival, use the footbridge to cross the canal. The Davie School Foundation was established in 1984 to protect and restore the Davie School to the integrity of its earlier appearance. The Foundation, in conjunction with the Town of Davie, the Broward County School Board, the Soroptimist International of Davie, The Davie Historical Society, and the community at large has worked tirelessly to preserve this important piece of Broward County’s history. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located at 6650 Griffin Road. For information, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

The event is for Cooper City couples and their guests. The cost is $5 per couple and space is limited. Former Cooper City Mayor Suellen Fardelmann officiated the first “Say I Do… Again” event in 1989, when four Cooper City couples re-affirmed their vows in a group ceremony in front of friends and family. Over the years, the number of couples in attendance has grown. Some come to celebrate their first anniversaries, while others come back every year and plan their Valentine’s celebration around it. “Renewing your wedding vows at ‘Say I Do...Again’ is a perfect way to reaffirm your commitment and devotion to the one you love all the while surrounded by family and friends, both old and new,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. The ceremony includes a walk down the aisle, flowers, photo under the wedding arch, customary cutting of the cake, refreshments, coupons and prizes from local businesses, and a certificate of re-affirmation. There will be a table filled with each couple’s wedding photo. Some couples come dressed in their wedding attire, while others are more casual. During the registration process, each couple provides information about themselves, such as how many years they have been married, where they met, and how many children they have. Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross will preside over the evening and perform the Re-Affirmation Ceremony. As each one is called up individually to “walk the aisle,” he will share some of this information with others at the event. Couples must register in-person at the Community or Pool and Tennis Center. Participants must be residents of Cooper City. Space is limited. For information, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or visit www.coopercityfl.org.

and daughters recently took a break from their busy schedules to spend some quality time together at the 26th Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance, hosted by the City of Cooper City. The event has become so popular that the Recreation Center is flooded with calls as soon as tickets go on sale. Many of the dads return year after year. “The event gives fathers and daughters a chance to socialize with their peers in a fun and entertaining setting,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Plus, the girls love to have the opportunity to dress up and have a night out with their dads.” Girls in 2nd grade and up enjoyed a memorable “date with dad” that included an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. If dad was unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles stepped in. This year, 71 fathers and 97 daughters attended. A DJ led the group in Western line dances and played Top 40 music. The South Florida Cloggers performed. Fathers and daughters also participated in three game stations, including “Lasso Lil’ Doggie,” which involved lassoing a cow by

tossing rings onto its head; “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” which involved shooting bottles and cans off of a fence with rubber band guns; and “Hang Your Hat High,” which involved tossing cowboy hats onto the horn of a saddle. They also enjoyed a dinner that included pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs, salad, beans, cole slaw, and veggies. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Last month was the Father-Son Adventure. On April 8, tickets will go on sale for the Mother-Daughter Tea, which will be held on May 9. Grandparent’s Day and MotherSon Night of Fun will be held later in the year. “Events like these help to foster community involvement at a time when more and more people are consumed with technology over personal interaction,” said Boyle. “Sometimes it’s just nice to get out of the house and have a night of fun and games.” For information on activities and events, visit www.CooperCityFL.org.

Schott Communities Offers New Inclusionary Afterschool Art Classes for Children By Debby Teich
S
chott Communities , which address the needs of persons who
are physically or intellectually challenged, is now offering Art from the Heart: Inspiring Children of All Abilities. The weekly afterschool inclusionary art class allows young artists with special needs and typically developing students to share in the creative process. “The unique quality of this program is its inclusionary character,” said Jerry Cohen, Director of Annual Funds & Stewardship for The Schott Communities. “Traditionally, programs and services for individuals with special needs were encapsulated and, therefore, separate from the rest of the population. Fortunately, this mentality has begun to change, and we see that in most schools special needs students are integrated in typical classrooms as much as possible. By having recreational activities in an inclusionary setting, we are teaching our children that there is no need to separate ourselves from each other. We can work, play, and live side by side.” In the new classes, children between the ages of 8 and 12 produce artwork that
is meaningful to them under the supervision of caring and dedicated teachers. The class is open to all special needs children, as well as any siblings or children who want to learn art and share with special needs students. The curriculum focuses on introducing the Masters of Art and the elements of art, while instilling confidence and self-esteem in a group setting. Participants work with acrylic paints, water colors, paper mache, oil pastels, charcoal, mix mediums and innovative computer software. There is an art exhibit at the end of the course. The artwork will also be displayed in an online gallery, as well as at community exhibits. “Many of these special needs children with limited verbal communication and social skills will benefit from an alternative means of self-expression – an outlet to communicate and connect through their artwork, reflecting their thoughts and feelings,” said Cohen. “The interdisciplinary approach to art workshops allows students to explore multiple avenues to find the best platform for individuals to express themselves and connect with others.” The class is offered two semesters a year, as well as during a two-week summer camp. The first semester began last month and ends in May, but students can sign up at any time. Schott Communities is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are physically or intellectually challenged. Programs and services include: Art from the Heart: An Art Therapy Program, a daily adult day program, crafts classes, counseling services and family support groups, and religious education and sacramental preparation. For more information or to enroll in the new art class, call Shawn at 954-434-3306 or visit www. schottcommunities.org.
Davie Police Department Offers Civilian Police Academy By Debby Teich

f you have ever dreamed of riding in a police car with an offi cer on patrol, now is your chance. It is one of the many things participants will get to do during the Davie Police Department’s 42nd Civilian Police Academy (CPA). The 11-week class begins on February 17. “The Civilian Police Academy gives participants a good understanding of all aspects of the police department,” said Sergeant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer. “The program allows them to interact with our officers and staff. It also gives them insight into what it is like to be a police officer and how the police department is managed.” The academy is open to all residents of Davie and Southwest Ranches. Attendees have ranged in Members of the 2014 Civilian Police Academy. age from 18 to their 80’s. Some are representatives of HOA’s, while others just want to know more about their local police department. The course includes both classroom and field instructions. Attendees learn about the various responsibilities that face officers, as well as the procedures and techniques used by officers when handling different situations. Some of the topics include: police use of force, legal issues, community policing, crime prevention, fire-

arms familiarization, DUI enforcement, patrol and criminal investigations, and more. During the course, participants visit a crime lab and gun range. They role play different scenarios that police officers often encounter to see how they might react in a similar situation. They meet with a detective that explains a homicide case in its entirety, from the time someone was called to the scene to the present. The detective reviews all of the facts of the investigation and even shares crime scene photos. The CPA also incorporates scenario-based demonstrations from the Canine Unit, Dive Team, Motor Unit, and others. The class is held on Tuesday nights, from 7-10pm, in the Community Room at the Davie Police Department, located at 1230 South Nob Hill Road. It is limited to no more than 25 people and fills up quickly. The cost is $25. Harris Sistrunk plans to enroll in CPA. “I have always wanted to know more about how the Davie Police Department functions,” said Sistrunk. “I am also excited to ride in a police car with an officer.” For registration and information, contact Patti Dobson at 954-693-8265 or send an email to pdobson@ davie-fl.gov.

Davie Teen Completes Eagle Scout Project By Debby Teich
Mark Morano with CGA Commanding Officer Tony Anastasio
M
ark M orano, 17, is on his way to
sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. This month, the Davie teen will receive his Eagle rank from Troop 183. Mark joined the Boy Scouts of America in second grade and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.
Last year, Mark helped his brother Andrew complete his Eagle Scout project, which was to repair a boat for the Ft. Lauderdale Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGA). When Commanding Officer Tony Anastasio told Mark that he needed help organizing a communications room, he knew he had found the perfect project for his own Eagle Scout. The CGA is under the direct authority of the US Department of Homeland Security. Ft. Lauderdale is the 7th District responsible for the administrative, training and supervisory support to Flotilla units. In addition to carrying out missions directed by the US Coast Guard or Secretary of Homeland Security, they participate in safety and security patrols, search and rescue, casualty & disaster missions, recreational and boating safety, exams, and recruitment activities for all services of the Coast Guard. “The Coast Guard Auxiliary helps save lives, protect the environment from polluters, guard our shores from terrorists, and much more,” said Mark. “That’s their job – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They don’t just train; they train and perform. The completed project will support this for many years and contribute to the Coast Guard’s motto ‘Semper Paratus,’ which means ‘Always Ready.’” Home Depot agreed to donate wood and Mark held fundraisers to raise money for nails, brackets and other materials he needed for the project. He solicited the help of troop members, his brother and friends to assist with designing, measuring, cutting,
staining and installing the shelving. Once it was completed, they organized the radio and communications equipment. “Before I started my project, the equipment was very unorganized,” said Mark. “Some of the equipment was unplugged or didn’t work. I put all the equipment in its proper spot and got everything working properly. It was really rewarding to see the finished room and to know that we helped to support the important work of the Auxiliary.” Mark is currently a senior at Archbishop McCarthy High School and is hoping to attend FSU in the fall. He plans to continue with Scouting as long as possible.
Mark proudly displays the equipment he helped organize.
13-Year-Old Suzuki Music Academy Student Performs at Carnegie Hall By Debby Teich
A
fter winning the 2014 American
Protégé International Competition, 13-year-old Sahana Shravan recently made her debut as a solo violinist at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Sahana will be performing at the first in a series of concerts on February 22, at 2pm, at the Suzuki Music Academy in Davie. Since the age of 3, Sahana has received formal violin training from the Academy’s founder and director, Richard Coff. The Academy uses the Suzuki Method, which is recognized by musicians and music educators as one of the best and most effective ways to provide formal classical music training to even the youngest children. At Carnegie Hall, Sahana was joined by fellow winners of the international competition who were chosen as the best of the best young artists. Sahana performed the classic virtuoso showpiece “Ziguernerweisen,” written by Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate. “Zigeurnerweisen has a lot of difficult, flashy techniques in it like left hand pizzicato, artificial harmonics, high position spiccato runs, and other advanced techniques,” said Sahana. Sahana says it was exciting to be on stage at Carnegie Hall. “On the night of the performance, I was thinking about all the amazing musicians who had played there before me,” said Sahana. “When I walked out,

I was overwhelmed by the thought of being on that famous stage.”
Sahana Shravan performed at Carnigie Hall.
Although it was Sahana’s first solo appearance at Carnegie Hall, it was not her first time performing there. She performed there last year as a member of the BAK String Orchestra, which was ranked best in its class on the national level. She says that the two experiences were very different. “When you play in an orchestra, everybody is supporting everybody else,” said Sahana. “When you are playing as a soloist, it’s a different story. You have the support of a piano accompanying you, but the spotlight is on you.”
Sahana practices an average of three to four hours each day. She says that there are many things that she loves about playing the violin. “A lot has to do with my love of classical music and especially the music of great composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Vivaldi,” said Sahana. “Another thing I love about violin is that it is more than just a solo instrument. It’s used in orchestras and chamber groups too. I love how it sounds when all the players in the group are perfectly in tune with each other.” Coff says that there are many things that have allowed Sahana to become such an accomplished violinist. “The classic violin is different from many other instruments, because it cannot be self-taught,” said Coff. “With excellent training, the typical child can learn to play remarkably well. In Sahana’s case, her exceptionally intense passion and enthusiasm for classical music and the violin, and her deep interest and connection with music, along with her musical intelligence and her capacity for rigorous study, has enabled her to become a truly remarkable violinist.” Sahana is not sure if she wants to be a professional musician. When she is not playing the violin, she enjoys reading, math, science and playing tennis. For information on Suzuki Music Academy, visit SuzukiMusicAcademy.com.

South Florida Cloggers Perform at Disney By Debby Teich
T
he South Florida Cloggers
continue to receive invitations to perform nationally and internationally. They recently took a trip to Downtown Disney in Orlando to perform some Christmas favorites, as well as the production “Under the Big Top,” which combines clogging and acrobatic moves. This is the third time the cloggers have performed in Disney. “The whole experience was amazing,” said Rebecca Vetter, director, choreographer, lead instructor and the founder of the South Florida Cloggers. “Disney treated us as if we were part of the Disney cast. That is a dream come true for an entertainer.” The South Florida Cloggers consists of South Florida Cloggers performed at Downtown Disney. over 100 members that meet at Robbins Lodge in Davie. It is a family atmosphere, with students that range in age from 2 to 72. Vetter’s “No one left behind policy” means that everyone has an opportunity to perform, including several disabled students. Mothers and daughters clog together, as well as entire families. During the season, from October to March, they perform several shows each weekend. “Clogging is aerobic, energizing, and exciting,” said Vetter. “All you need to get started is a pair of shoes.” There are 40 members who participate in competitions as part of a performance team. Some of the advanced cloggers have won awards all over South
Florida and in other states. In March 2014, they brought home 14 awards from several performances in Tennessee. They have also performed in Ohio, Daytona, Tallahassee, Orlando, Florida Keys, and more. For the second time, the South Florida Cloggers have been invited to audition for America’s Got Talent. They recently performed “Under the Big Top” for the show’s producers and are waiting to find out if they will be part of Season 10. “The greatest thing about auditioning for America’s Got Talent is that no matter the outcome, the kids still think they made it to the big time,” said Vetter. The Town of Davie recognized the South Florida Cloggers for their dedication to performing and volunteering in the community. At the Downtown Hoedown last year, Davie Mayor Judy Paul presented the group with a proclamation naming June 13 as South Florida Cloggers Day. The group has performed for organizations such as March of Dimes, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, Dan Marino Foundation, The Kidz Korner, A Day for Children at Nova Southeastern University, Special Olympics, Tour de Broward and more. Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents Arsenic and Old Lace By Debby Teich
T
his month , Davie residents can experience
live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring. Performances will be held on February 13, 14, 20, & 21 at 8pm and February 14, 15, 21, & 22 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. A beloved American classic, Arsenic and Old Lace is a rollicking dark comedy about a Brooklyn family of lovable and kooky homicidal maniacs. The action centers on a drama critic who discovers that his two elderly aunts make it a practice of poisoning certain visitors. The show opened on Broadway in 1941 and ran for 1,444 performances. The 1944 film version was directed by Frank Capra and starred Cary Grant. ACT of Davie’s production of Arsenic and Old Lace is directed by Carla Zackson Heller. Performers include two of the founders and original Board Members of ACT. They are Fern Katz, who also acts as President, Treasurer and Producer, and Barry Katz. Other cast members include Joanne Marsic, Anton Simon, Scott Travis, Brenda Nicholas, Jason Baumgard, Mark Kroczynski, Jerry Weinberg, Ned Cray, Scott Berendes, Tim
Stephens and Ron Torres. Several of the Board Members are actively involved in every production, including: Christopher Harrington, Carole Czvekus, Dana Fredebaugh, Sylvia Alexander, David Alexander, Ted Dvoracek and John Hernandez. Some of the dedicated volunteers include: Bill Heller, Mary Ellen Meeks, Bonnie Laditch, Bob Moring, Adele Robbins, Marcy Decker, Bruce Bornstein and Katt Neale, a high school student who will be Stage Managing the production. Since 1999, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appear in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s board’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year and then sends out audition notices throughout South Florida. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out.

hen you said “I do,” you never imagined that years later you would lose all interest in a sex life and find your “soul-mate” unattractive and irritating. You find yourself constantly battling fatigue as everything you do requires so much effort. You don’t even know who you are when you hear yourself talking, as the mood swings consume your whole being. How can you possibly maintain a happy marriage when you’re not even happy with the person you are becoming? Can you control this or is this simply a normal progression of married life and you just deal with it? I am here to say “NO.” You absolutely don’t need to live this life. There are options. Hormones & Marriage… Is There More?
February 2015 | Our City Davie
The solution is simple. It’s all about functional medicine and balancing your unique self with what is known as the Opti-Life Program. This program is inclusive of what is demanded from you and your unique story that will lead our functional medicine experts to determine what is needed just for you. Let me explain. Yes, as we age our hormones start decreasing and as a result symptoms appear. The most common symptoms are lack of sex drive, fatigue, depression, gaining weight in the mid-section, unable to multi-task and think clearly, mood swings, and hot flashes. All these symptoms can not only impact you as an individual, but obviously your relationship. The answer may not be as simple as just balancing your sex hormones. It may include looking at your neurotransmitters, adrenal glands, thyroid and much more. This is where the Opti-Life Program is essential. When you begin this program, the goal is optimization of health encompassing the body as a whole and not just one segment. Testing may only include a simple blood test or a combination of blood, saliva and urine. Depending on your unique story of symptoms and the results of testing, an individualized plan is created for you to maximize your overall health. Once treatment is started, benefits can be seen as quickly as five days. Some of the testimonials I have heard are: “Thank you for giving me my wife back.”; “I am more centered as a human being.” and “I haven’t been this intimate with my husband since our honeymoon.” So you decide. Is the Opti-Life Program for you? Can your marriage be improved? Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They are both the founders of the Opti-Life Program and specialize in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy using both pellets and creams. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For more information or to schedule a complimentary consultation, call 954.384.8989.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.
Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.
Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined Forty-five million Americans no longer have me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. health insurance, and those who do have found The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. that their benefits have been greatly reduced. And guess what…I started feeling so much That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a better! An entire That’s when I realized that I wanted to become week of care in my office costs what you could a chiropractor and help others. That’s how pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save… it happened! studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. It’s strange how life is, because now people The immune system fights colds, the flu, and come to see me with their migraines. They also other ailments. So you may not be running off come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, to the doctor as much. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it Here’s what some of my patients had to say: shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe your health. You are going to write a check to neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm someone for your health care expenses, you to comb my hair. vegetarian. On February 28, area residents will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe at the Aster Knight Parks Foundation’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser. It will be held at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park, 5840 SW 148 Avenue, from noon to 4:30pm. Admission is free. “This is a fun family event with a casual ‘hometown’ feel,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “The park is a beautiful venue. The event is planned for February to take advantage of our lovely winter weather.” The contest is limited to the first 20 contestants and the top three winners will receive prizes. For only $10, visitors can buy a card that entitles them to sample all of the recipes and vote for their favorite one. In addition, Councilman Jablonski will be defending his title during the “Council Cup Challenge,” when secret judges will determine which Council Member’s chili recipe is the best.

The event will also include music and kid-friendly entertainment. A local Boy Scout troop will be grilling hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken. Last year, approximately 150 people sampled the chili and declared Elaine Ringger and Family the winners for their Alegria Mango Farm Chili. Sharron Bush won second place for her Spicy Redhead Chili. Winston and Glennis Simmonds came in third place for their Jamaican Jerk Chili. First and second place winners received a one-of-a-kind cooking pot trophy with a plaque. The winners’ names and “Best Chili in Town” titles were also recorded on bricks that were placed on the commemorative walkway at Town Hall. The proceeds will benefit Southwest Ranches Parks and Recreation spaces, via the Aster Knight Parks Foundation, which has donated thousands of dollars to date to parks development in the Town of Southwest Ranches. Southwest Ranches’ inaugural council member Aster Knight started the Foundation through his own love of nature and the urge to preserve and protect the Town’s natural areas. Its mission is to “raise funds through public and private partnerships for parks, trails, and green space projects within the town of Southwest Ranches to further the Town’s motto of ‘Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle’ and provide a superior quality of life for the Town’s residents and visitors alike.”

has taken on the mission of highlighting and educating the community on the issues of human trafficking to help put an end to it. The organization recently invited junior and senior students from West Broward County high schools to enter its Stolen Girls, Stolen Dreams poster competition. Last month, during Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the winners were announced at a reception at the Old Davie School. All of the art depicted the young artists’ interpretations of the tragedy of human trafficking. Professional artists and community leaders judged the submitted work based on design and execution, interpretation of the theme, originality, and use of materials. The winners are: 1st place ($300): Paris Nathanael Casasola-Zepeda for “Everyone Has A Dream”; 2nd place ($200): Jewel Peart for “Bondage”; and 3rd place ($100): Amanda Gail Hines for “Breaking the Chains.” Their posters will be reproduced and placed throughout the Town of Davie in restaurants, stores, Town Hall and the Westfield Broward Mall. During the reception, Dr. Sandrine GaillardKenney, Ed. D., enlightened the crowd on human trafficking. She is the chair of the Health Science Department and an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University. In addition, financial aid experts will be available in the media center to assist seniors who need help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for the upcoming 2015-16 academic year. ver the past year or so, it has come to my
attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage from their spouse are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney and filing for the dissolution, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive and it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and as such may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties. It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and as such it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. My office is available and offers free consultations. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Beware of Embedded Dental Plan By Dr. Alon Grosman
T
he Affordable C are Act (also known as ACA
or “Obama care”) requires that all insurance plans meet “10 Essential Benefits.” Pediatric dentistry is among these benefits. For this reason, many insurance plans are being offered with dental coverage. They can be offered as two separate medical and dental policies, known in the insurance industry as “stand alone” policies. This is traditionally how people have been purchasing insurance for years. In addition, there has been a new creation called “embedded” plans. In this type of insurance, the dental portion is embedded within the medical. At face value, they seem very attractive and we have noted that many families have chosen to drop their traditional plans for these new embedded plans. In many instances, the plans have not met expectations. I hope to clarify some of the potential pitfalls and offer important questions to ask prior to making the switch. First let’s evaluate the highlights of each type of plan: ▸▸ “Stand Alone” plans: They are completely separate entities from medical insurance. They have relatively low deductibles, usually between $25 and $50 dollars. They have annual maximum benefits and usually cover preventative treatment close to 100%. Orthodontics may or may not be covered, depending on the plan. The main benefits of these plans are that the deductibles are small and the benefits are transparent. ▸▸ “Embedded” plans: These are pediatric dental plans which are embedded within the medical plan. The majority of these plans share the medical deductible. As you know, these medical deductibles can be rather large (on average, $2,000 per individual). What this means is that until you pay your deductible, all dental is paid out of pocket including preventative treatment such as cleaning and x-rays. They can also be very tricky to understand. For example, the benefits table may read that they cover 100% of preventative. However, the majority only cover it once the deductible is met. Additionally, many state that there is an orthodontic coverage. However, the majority only cover for cases deemed “medically necessary”, which includes only the most difficult cases. In all fairness, there are some plans which are “embedded” with a separate dental deductible and those that will cover preventative at 100%. The only problem is that all the right questions must be asked in advance. If not, benefits may not be understood until the procedures are billed out. By this time, open enrollment periods are usually closed. We recommend keeping it simple, especially during this transition time. Stick with PPO policies. These are available in “embedded” or “stand alone” policies and ensure that you will be able to retain your current healthcare providers. When possible, choose a “stand alone” dental policy. They are usually more transparent and new “out of pocket maximums” (also mandated by the ACA) have made them even more attractive. If you do choose an “embedded policy,” verify that the policy has a separate deductable from the medical portion. Also make sure that preventative treatment is covered at 100%, even before the deductible is met. Remember, your best resources in making decisions are a knowledgeable insurance broker and your current dental office. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. ccording to the Centers for D isease Control ,
an estimated 52.5 million American adults suffer from some form of arthritis. As our nation’s population ages, the prevalence is expected to increase. Here are the answers to commonly asked questions about arthritis in the foot and ankle: 1. What is arthritis? Arthritis is a degenerative process that may take place in any joint in the body. Cartilage which allows the joint to move smoothly starts to wear down. Bone spurring and bone cysts may occur as the joint wears abnormally. The joint starts to move out of its normal position creating pain with movement. A loss of joint movement also follows the arthritic process. 2. What causes arthritis? Most often arthritis is caused from an injury to the joint. The injury may occur as a child and it may manifest itself later in life. A bad injury to a bone or joint (fracture) may start the development of arthritis almost immediately after the injury. Arthritis is very common when a bone fractures into the joint. Malpositioning of the joint will cause abnormal wear and tear. It may also be seen in people who are excessively flatfooted, knockkneed or bowlegged. It is also very common in people with bunions. 3. Will the arthritis get worse over time? In almost all cases arthritis in any joint will worsen. The joint will wear abnormally causing pain, limited motion of the joint, bone spurring and swelling around the joint. The joint will become excessively stiff causing pain with many activities. Difficulty with certain shoes may also be present. 4. Will medication help to lessen the pain and joint deformity? Oral medication will help to diminish some discomfort, but it will not change the degenerative process, which takes place slowly over time. 5. Will physical therapy be of any benefit? Physical therapy will help retain some movement in the joint and keep swelling to a minimum. It may also help to improve muscle strength. Over the long term it will be of limited benefit as the degenerative process will continue to take place. 6. Can surgery be of benefit if the arthritis is found early? Many procedures can be performed to assist in treating the degenerative process if found early. After a thorough history and physical examination x-rays are taken to assess the degree of joint damage. Occasionally if the damage is mild an arthroscopic or small open procedure may be necessary to remove abnormal bone and soft tissue. Cartilage that is lifted away from the bone is removed to allow the joint to function more normally. If a joint is out of position removing bone spurs and soft tissue may be of limited benefit. In this case the bones may need to be repositioned to allow more normal joint alignment. 7. Can anything be done if the arthritis is severe? In some cases the arthritis is severe and joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary. Joint replacements are an excellent option and may be necessary in older, more sedentary patients. Fusing the joint that is arthritic and not allowing it to move any longer is also an excellent approach to the treatment of arthritis. This eliminates any painful movement allowing a return to work and activities of daily living with minimal modifications. Some joints can be fused and still allow an athlete to resume professional sports 8. Will orthotics be of any benefit? Orthotics will assist in maintaining normal joint position. Support of the foot and placement of the foot in better anatomical position may redistribute stress more evenly in the foot and ankle region. This may help to lessen pain and possibly delay the need for surgery. They provide great benefits in people with big toe joint (turf toe, bunions) problems. Orthotics are also very useful in patients who are flatfooted, knock-kneed, bowlegged and in those with lower back pain. Love Is in the Air and So Is the Desire for Home Ownership
Large or small, We Top ALL!
By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor
A
ccording to Steve Harney (KCMB log .com),
Zillow predicted that Millennials (buyers under age 35) will become the largest group of buyers, overtaking 35 to 50 year olds (Gen X) by the end of 2015. Two days later, Realtor.com also projected that Millennials will be a driving force in the housing market next year. In their 2015 Housing Forecast, they claim: “Households headed by millennials will see significant growth as a reflection of economic gains. Millennials will also drive two-thirds of household formations over the next five years. Next year’s addition of 2.75 million jobs and increased household formation will be the two key factors driving first-time buyer sales.” Could it be that millennials discovered homeownership is the best path to wealth? The New York Times recently published an editorial entitled, Homeownership and Wealth Creation. The article explains: “Homeownership long has been central to Americans’ ability to amass wealth; even with the substantial decline in wealth after the housing bust, the net worth of homeowners over time has significantly outpaced that of renters, who tend as a group to accumulate little if any wealth.” Studies have found that the average net worth of a homeowner ($194,500) is 36x greater than of a renter ($5,400). Homebuyers should expect to spend 15.3% of their income on a mortgage. First-time homebuyers should expect to pay not much more than that – 17.4%, while renters should expect to pay a whopping 29.9% of their income on rent – and nothing to deduct at tax time as well as no build in equity! Nationwide, home values will increase by 2.5 percent while rents will grow around 3.5 percent, according to Dr. Stan Humphries, Zillow Chief Economist.

There are Five Benefits to Homeownership
According to the latest report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies, Harvard University:
Call me for help with your insurance and financial services needs. Auto. Home. Life. Bank.
▸▸ The widespread use of amortizing mortgages to finance the acquisition of the home results in forced savings as a portion of the financing cost each month goes toward principal reduction. ▸▸ Homes are generally assumed to experience some degree of real appreciation over time, reflecting increased overall demand for housing due to growth in both population and incomes against a backdrop of a fixed supply of land located near centers of economic activity. ▸▸ The rate of return on an investment in a home can be substantial even when the increase in house values is modest. ▸▸ Federal income tax benefits from owning a home can also be substantial. The ability to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes is the most apparent of these benefits.

▸▸ Owning a home provides a hedge against inflation in rents over time. As a means to building wealth, there is no practical substitute for homeownership. If you are a renter who is considering making a purchase, sit with a local real estate professional who can explain the benefits of signing a contract to purchase over renewing your lease. Cleveland Clinic was ranked #1 in heart care by U.S. News & World Report 2014-15.
Confronting Heart Rhythm Abnormalities Millions of Americans suffer from heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias), which are conditions that cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Many individuals are unaware that they have an irregular heartbeat. Arrhythmias are classified according to the speed of the heart rate, as well as in which part of the heart they develop. Doctors may refer to an arrhythmia as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, or bradycardia. Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of abnormal heartbeat. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist, Jose Baez-Escudero, MD, specializes in Electrophysiology, which focuses on the prevention and treatment of heart rhythm abnormalities.
What causes AFib?
Jose Baez-Escudero, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Cardiac Electrophysiologist
There is no one “cause” of AFib, although it is associated with many conditions, including: Most common causes • Hypertension • Coronary artery disease • Heart valve disease
• After heart surgery • Chronic lung disease • Heart failure
• Cardiomyopathy • Congenital heart disease • Pulmonary embolism
• Pericarditis
• Viral infection
•Obstructive sleep apnea • Endurance exercise (e.g. running marathons)
Less common causes • Hyperthyroidism
In at least 10 percent of the cases, no underlying heart disease is found. In these cases, AFib may be related to excessive alcohol or caffeine use, stress, certain drugs, electrolyte or metabolic imbalances, severe infections, or genetic factors. In some cases, no cause can be found.
What are the dangers of AFib? Some people live for years with AFib without any issues; however, if left untreated it can lead to future medical problems. Because the atria are beating rapidly and irregularly, blood does not flow through them as quickly. This makes the blood more likely to clot. If a clot is pumped out of the heart, it can travel to the brain, resulting in a stroke. AFib can also decrease the heart’s pumping ability. The irregularity can make the heart work less efficiently. In addition, AFib that occurs over a long period of time can significantly weaken the heart and lead to heart failure and even death.
What are the symptoms of AFib? You may have AFib without having any symptoms. Often, the initial presentation of AFib is a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA). However, if you have symptoms, they may include: • Heart palpitations
• Lack of energy
•Dizziness
• Chest discomfort
• Shortness of breath
How is AFib treated? The appropriate starting point for treating most patients is medication (blood thinners and antiarrhythmics) and lifestyle changes. Should medications be unsuccessful, physicians may recommend a procedure to regain normal heart rhythm. Types of procedures range from mild electric shocks administered to the chest wall (cardioversion) to catheter ablation, both of which are used to treat AFib. Catheter ablation, which should only be performed by a skilled electrophysiologist, is a procedure aimed at disconnecting the pathway of the abnormal rhythm. Should other options not prevail, surgery may be employed. Most surgical techniques are intended to either block or disconnect the electrical impulse causing the irregular heart beat. The entire heart team at Cleveland Clinic Florida is highly skilled in the most innovative treatments for complex heart conditions. They are also supported by the latest technology and the team of nationally recognized experts dedicated to heart care. Cleveland Clinic Florida is backed by the vast resources of Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, which has been ranked #1 in the nation for heart care 20 years in a row, by U.S. News & World Report.

ask the Sheriff
Touchline Protects Seniors By Sheriff Scott J. Israel
A
s sheriff, I want to ensure the B roward Sheriff’s Office is doing everything we can for our county’s seniors, while honoring and respecting their independence. The Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline is saving lives by providing a free daily wellness telephone call to seniors age 60 and over who live alone in Broward County. In September 2013, BSO partnered with the Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline program. Our staff went into many senior communities throughout Broward County and educated residents about this great service. As a result, this program expanded rapidly and more than doubled its number of participants. Rafael Vazquez, the senior touchline coordinator, estimates that nearly 80 percent of these new members are the result of BSO’s community outreach involvement.
Irene’s story highlights the importance of 2-1-1. In March 2013, she was standing on a stool in her kitchen, stretching for a treat for Abby, her service dog, when she lost her balance and fell. Irene, who lives alone, was hurt and couldn’t move. When she missed her 9am call from Broward 2-1-1, a BSO deputy was dispatched to check on her. Without 2-1-1, Irene may not have received the help she needed when she needed it. Here’s how it works. Up to three calls are placed to the senior’s home within an hour. If there is no response, and if the listed emergency contacts also cannot reach the person, Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline alerts BSO and a deputy is sent to the residence immediately. The daily wellness call provides a safeguard for Broward seniors as well as social interaction. The 2-1-1 counselor establishes a caring, reliable relationship with the senior. The counselor can also connect seniors with other agencies and organizations that can provide additional assistance. Whether the individual requires food, transportation, medication or additional medical services, the counselors can help. Irene will sometimes call in just to talk to one of the counselors. To seniors like her, the program provides a support system. It helps Broward seniors stay in their homes and remain independent. The value of our senior population is clear to see, but is sometimes overlooked. They are a link to our past and, through their wisdom, provide a strong template for our future. The Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline is a great example of the type of services the seniors of our county have earned and deserve. I urge any interested senior in our community to sign up for this important service. For more information or to register for Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline, dial 2-1-1 or visit the Broward 2-1-1 website at http://211-broward.org/senior-touchline/.

Parc 28 Celebrates 25 Years of Serving Authentic Asian Cuisine By Stacey Bomser
P
arc 28 has been serving authentic Chinese and A sian cuisine
since 1990. Owners Felicia and Leeman Chan take great pride in sharing their cuisine and culture with longtime customers as well as those just discovering the restaurant. Felicia explains what keeps customers coming back year after year.
Please describe your restaurant. Parc 28 is a family-friendly restaurant
known for its exceptional service and quality food. Our staff is very attentive and helpful and are always happy to make recommendations. Our chefs specialize in authentic Asian cuisine from many countries.
Parc 28 serves more than just Chinese food. What other cuisines do you offer? We serve authentic Chinese cuisine, as well as Malaysian,
Thai, and Indian. We are one of the only restaurants around to serve Malaysian food. It is very exotic and uses many more spices than traditional Chinese cuisine, making the food that much more flavorful. I think it’s the best of all Asian cuisine because it is a blend of Chinese, Thai and Indian.
What are some of Parc 28’s specialty dishes? I would recommend the
Ayam Rendang (chicken seasoned with red curry in coconut milk gravy), Satay Chicken (marinated chicken grilled on skewers and served with peanut sauce), Sotong Goreng (marinated, golden crispy fried calamari), Roti Canai (crispy Indian-style pancake with curried

chicken, potatoes and a dipping sauce), Singapore Rice Noodles (curried rice noodles mixed with meats and vegetables), and Chili Chicken (deep fried chicken, fresh chili curry leaves, onions in house special sauce).
Do you offer any specials? We are well known
for our lunch and dinner specials, all at very reasonable prices. We also offer a special menu for parties and special occasions. Please join us on February 19th as we celebrate the Chinese New Year and welcome the Year of the Sheep. We will serve special New Year’s dishes in addition to our regular menu.
Why do you think Parc 28 has been so successful for the past 25 years? We are a family-owned and operated restaurant. The three secrets to our success are the consistency of food quality, excellent customer service, and innovative dishes. You have not experienced authentic Asian cuisine until you have eaten at Parc 28.
Parc 28 is located at 1382 Weston Road in the Country Isles Plaza. It is open from 11:30am to 9:30pm Monday through Thursday, 11:30am to 10:30pm on Friday, 12:30pm to 10:30pm on Saturday, and 12:30pm to 9:30pm on Sunday. Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy By Debby Teich
S
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their
bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do. Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program. Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Eight years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past seven years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Geri Kelleher, Owner and How does Slender Program Director Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program
and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.
A
pril Claxton recently
lost 40 pounds in only six weeks at Slender Fit U. She was anxious to share her story to motivate others to do the same. Why did you decide to lose weight? I have always been chunky. When I turned 35, my body started responding differently and I gained a lot of weight. I had difficulty breathing, walking and sleeping. I always felt swollen and tired, and spent most of my time at home on the couch. I have tried every diet out there. I was contemplating surgery, but decided April Claxton lost 40 lbs. in six weeks. to try Slender Fit U first. What were your results? I am 5’6. I started the program at 296 lbs. and lost 40 of them in only six weeks. I am excited to lose the rest. How do you feel now? In only six weeks, I am like a different person. I am now exercising and have gotten rid of several medications, including one for high blood pressure. I feel empowered, more confident and very sexy. People are looking at me instead of past me. I feel pretty and alive! Why were you more successful with Slender Fit U than other diets? I never had a real coach who supported me throughout the process. Geri answered all of my questions and helped me stay on track. She wanted me to succeed as much as I did. In addition, I saw instant results, with a 10 lb. loss in only ten days. When I saw how well my body responded, I knew I had found the right program.
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
Can you purchase HCG over the counter? No. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life.
Lost 30 lbs. in six weeks.
Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
Lost 50 lbs. in six weeks.
