FEBRUARY 2016 | OUR CITY DAVIE
BECAUSE EVERYTHING
publisher’s page
Happy Valentine’s Day!
W
ow, time surely flies! New Year’s celebrations are already a month in the past and 2016 is in full swing. While our neighbors in the Northern states are scraping ice from the windows of their cars and shoveling the snow in their driveway, we enjoy the warmth of the Sunshine State. The kids are busy with school and afterschool activities, parents are busy at work, and we are all dreaming about summer vacations. This is also the time of year when we make plans for a special evening with our Valentine. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them or which restaurant we shall visit, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. The most important point is that it is a gift that comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift then spending valuable time with the ones we love. This February, give from your heart and enjoy each other’s company. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Sincerely,

he Town of Davie will celebrate its unique heritage and roots as an agricultural community on February 27, from 9am to 6pm, and February 28, from 9am to 5pm. Approximately 15,000 people are expected to attend the Town of Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo. Admission is free. “The Orange Blossom Festival is unique to the Town of Davie,” said Anita Reid, Public Relations Coordinator for the Town of Davie. “This heritage event combines country crafts, food, live music, and professional rodeos like no place else in South Florida.” The Festival features more than 250 displays. Free activities for both days includes an arts & crafts show, fine arts show, musical entertainment, “Cowboy Town,” Native American display, animal farm, western carriage display, commerce corner, information displays and green product displays. There will be free concerts on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be a free kids’ corner that includes a bounce house, giant slide, rides and climbing wall. The theme for this year’s parade is “Oldie Goldies Blossom in Cowboy Town.” The parade will begin at 10am on Saturday and will proceed down Davie Road between Orange Drive and SW 39 Street. More than 80 floats, marching bands, youth groups, and others are expected to participate. The cost for parade entries is: horse/animal, military, elected officials - free; commercial and noncommercial floats - $25; and nonprofit organizations - $10. Food will be plentiful all weekend. On Saturday, beginning at 7am, the Kiwanis

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be an old fashioned Strawberry Festival at the Davie Woman’s Club, located on Orange Drive on the festival grounds. Fresh strawberries and homemade shortcake will be served, as well as other strawberry creations. Just like in the old west, guests can also purchase fresh home grown vegetables, herbs and spices, peanuts and fruits at the old fashion Farmers Market sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and the 4-H Clubs of Broward. Visitors will also have an opportunity to see an authentic heritage rodeo on Saturday, at 7:30pm, and Sunday, at 2pm, in the covered Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Real cowboys and cowgirls from around the world will compete for championship titles, as they challenge 2,000 pound bulls, ride bare back, wrestle cattle, barrel race, team rope and more. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, hosted by the Davie Golf and Country Club, as well as the Orange Blossom Kickoff Concert at the Old Davie School Bandshell, featuring the Classic Rock band Rema Dee, from 6pm to 9pm. he Town of Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo is officially held on February 28 and 29. On February 26, the Town of Davie will present two events to kick off the Festival – a free concert and the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic. Our goal is always to have a fun, but competitive tournament with lots of prizes and winners.” By popular demand, the start time has been moved back to 1pm, so participants can check in

at the office in the morning and then golf in the afternoon. The tournament features a luncheon and awards dinner, as well as course contests and prizes, a shirt and gift bag. Competition is open to players of all skill levels and handicaps. The entry fee is $600 per team or $150 per individual. The entry fee qualifies each golfer for the $100,000 Hole-in-One Contest, a Helicopter Golf Ball Drop fundraiser and over $3,000 in prizes for the top four teams and course contest winners. Net proceeds will help support the Town of Davie’s Summer Youth Golf Program, which includes a series of Junior Golf Camps. The annual camps are conducted by the professional staff of Greenway Golf, which manages the course for the Town of Davie. Davie’s Junior Golf Camps are open to boys and girls, age 6 to 17, who want to learn the fundamentals of the sport. No experience is necessary and clubs will be provided to children who don’t have their own set. Each camp will provide ten hours of professional instruction, plus fun, games and lunch.

ome like their chili filled with meat, while others prefer it vegetarian. On March 5, area residents will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe at the Southwest Ranches Parks Foundation’s 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser. It will be held at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park, 5840 SW 148 Avenue, from noon to 4:30pm. Admission is free. “We look forward to sharing the best of Southwest Ranches with those who come out to this event, which supports development of Southwest Ranches Parks for all to enjoy,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “We are looking forward to another great event this year.” The contest is limited to the first 20 contestants. For only $10, visitors can buy a chili voting card that allows them to sample all of the recipes and rank their favorites. The Town’s “Council Cup Challenge” will continue again this year. Council members will have an opportunity to defend their titles during the secretly-judged side event! There will also be food, music and kid-friendly entertainment. Last year, approximately 200 people sampled the chili and declared Gary Jablonski the winner for his Triple 5 Chili. Elaine Ringger won second place for
her Mango Chili. Winston and Glennis Simmonds came in third place for their Jamaican Jerk Chili. First, second, and third place winners received one-of-a-kind trophies with hand-beaded plaques. The winner’s name and “Best Chili in Town” title was also recorded on a brick that is in place on the commemorative walkway at Town Hall. The proceeds will benefit Southwest Ranches Parks and Recreation spaces, via the Aster Knight Parks Foundation, which has donated thousands of dollars to date to parks development in the Town of Southwest Ranches. Southwest Ranches’ inaugural council member Aster Knight started the Foundation through his own love of nature and the urge to preserve and protect the Town’s natural areas. Its mission is to “raise funds through public and private partnerships for parks, trails, and Photo Credit: Bob Hartmann Photography green space projects within the town of Southwest Ranches to further the Town’s motto of ‘Preserving Our Rural Lifestyle’ and provide a superior quality of life for the Town’s residents and visitors alike.” The cost to register is $50. Firewall Students Awarded Scholarships SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
N
ine Firewall students now have another opportunity to reach their greatest potential. They were recently awarded a two year Florida pre-paid scholarship from the Take Stock in Children program. All of the nominated students have been in the Firewall program for at least two years and are excelling in their character and academics. “It’s good knowing my education is secure and that I have a better chance succeeding later in life,” said Arnold Fuentes, 9th grade Firewall student. In order to receive the award, students had to be eligible for free and/or reduced lunch at school, maintain a “C” or better in all classes, have no more than three unexcused absence per quarter, and remain crime and drug free, among other set standards. The Firewall Centers’ daily program provides the students with the support needed to meet the expectations of the scholarship.
Headquartered in Davie, Firewall Centers is a nonprofit that offers free afterschool mentoring, tutoring, and leadership development for at-risk middle and high school students in Broward County. The program’s objective is to instill character values and promote academic success, supporting them as they strive to reach their potential. Students learn to T.H.I.N.K. (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back). Each student is assigned a Firewall mentor that tracks their homework assignments and communicates with them to follow through on their academic goals. Additionally, using Broward Schools’ online Pinnacle Gradebook viewer, Firewall mentors track the students’ grades and help keep their parents in the know. Those participating in the Take Stock in Children program will be assigned a professional College Success Coach to help coach, teach, and provide resources on their road to college. In addition, the students will meet once a week with their TSIC adult community volunteer mentor. With the help of both organizations, these students are receiving the support they need to help them excel now, as well as throughout college and careers. For information, visit www.firewallcenters.org.

Davie Residents Are Trained to Respond in a Disaster Community News
by Debby Teich
H
urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Davie were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for public safety personnel to reach everyone in need. A group of Davie residents is trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. They are members of Davie’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The next CERT training class is scheduled to begin on February 23. CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. CERT members use the training
learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen the possibility of further damage to property. CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in the community. In order to qualify for Davie CERT, team members must be over 18 years old and live or work in the
Town of Davie. The 8-week class meets at the Davie Fire Administration Building, located at 6901 Orange Drive. Classes include Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization, Disaster Simulation and more. There is no cost associated with the team. Harold Grimes recently moved to Davie from Kansas. When his hometown was hit by a tornado, the CERT team was able to reach people in need before first responders arrived. “I will never forget the men and women who came to our rescue,” said Grimes. “I plan to join the Davie CERT team to pay it forward.” For more information email cert@daviefl.gov. Register by going on-line at www. davie-fl.gov, click community, then CERT, or go to the site directly at www.davie-fl. gov/Pages/DavieFL_PIO/CERT/index.

f you have ever dreamed of riding in a police car with an officer on patrol, now is your chance. It is one of the many things participants will get to do during the Davie Police Department’s 44th Civilian Police Academy (CPA). The 11-week class begins on February 23. “The Civilian Police Academy gives participants a good understanding of all aspects of the police department,” said Lieutenant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer. “The program allows them to interact with our officers and staff. It also gives them insight into what it is like to be a police officer and how the police department is managed.” This academy is open to all residents of Davie and Southwest Ranches. Attendees have ranged in age from 18 to their 80’s. Some are representatives of HOA’s, while others just want to know more about their local police department. The course includes both classroom and field instructions. Attendees learn about the various responsibilities that face officers, as well as the procedures and techniques used by officers when handling different situations. Some of the topics

include: police use of force, legal issues, community policing, crime prevention, firearms familiarization, DUI enforcement, patrol and criminal investigations, and more. During the course, participants visit a crime lab and gun range. They role play different scenarios police officers often encounter to see how they might react in a similar situation. They meet with a detective that explains a homicide case in its entirety, from the time someone was called to the scene to the present. The detective reviews all of the facts of the investigation and even shares crime scene photos. The CPA also incorporates scenario-based demonstrations from the Canine Unit, Dive Team, Motor Unit, and others. The class is held on Tuesdays nights, from 7-10pm, in the Community Room at the Davie Police Department, located at 1230 South Nob Hill Road. It is limited to no more than 25 people and fills up quickly. The cost is $25. For registration and information, contact Patti Dobson at 954-693-8265 or send an email to pdobson@davie-fl.gov.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
The Science of Love By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
H
ormones are nature’s beautiful way of keeping the human species alive and reproducing. With an irresistible cocktail of chemicals and hormones, our brain entices us to fall in love and these hormones and chemicals have everything to do to with STAYING in love. Almost every day, one of my colleagues, whether a primary care doctor or a marriage counselor, refers me to one of their patients. It’s a story I hear often. After hundreds of hours of counseling, I am still at square one. The emotional connection doesn’t seem to be there even though I still care deeply for him/her. Can some people, for whatever reason, fall out of love? Yes it can happen. Not only do I see this daily, but also research validates that when chemicals and/or hormones are out of balance or missing, it is very difficult to reconnect and move forward in a relationship. The ups and downs of your hormones have a powerful effect on how you feel about not only yourself, as well as how you feel about your sweetheart. How do hormones and chemicals affect your relationship? ▸▸ Oxytocin (the “love hormone”) - Your brain releases oxytocin to strengthen relationships. When released, it increases feelings of attachment for another person, as well as feelings of trust. It also decreases feelings of stress, fear, and pain. How do you get it? Oxytocin is released simply with talking, hugging, intimacy, and when someone shows they trust you. ▸▸ Serotonin – This is one of love’s most important chemicals, as it is considered the “feel good hormone.” Serotonin imbalances are linked to anxiety and depression, making anti-depressants like Paxil and Effexor popular prescriptions, since they work on serotonin receptors. Interestingly, 80% of your serotonin is produced in your gut. So you can imagine, if you have a sick gut you are most likely to have an imbalance in your brain. ▸▸ Testosterone - Not only is it necessary for libido, especially for women, but it is also an anti-depressant increasing friendliness while reducing anger, depression, fatigue, confusion, nervousness, irritability, and blood sugar. ▸▸ Estrogen and Progesterone – These levels decline significantly after ages 35-40. These hormones are the body’s natural: anti-depressant; anti-anxiety; protection of the nerves in the brain; lubricant keeping the vagina, skin, and joints moist; bone strengthener; and despite the latest gossip, they protect against certain cancers. This is a very brief eye opener on the complexity of hormones and chemicals and how they affect numerous reactions not only affecting you but your loved ones. Functional Medicine specializes in balancing all aspects to optimize not only for your individual health care needs, but also your partners to improve the quality of your relationship. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954384-8989. Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents Deathtrap By Debby Teich
T
his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting Deathtrap by Ira Levin. Performances will be held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center on February 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 8pm, as well as February 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. Deathtrap offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients - gasp inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter. The play deals with the devious machinations of a writer whose recent offerings have been flops, and who is prepared to go to any lengths to improve his fortunes. It provides twists and turns and sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be held spellbound until the very last moment. ACT of Davie’s production of Deathtrap is being directed by Carla ZacksonHeller. Cast members include: Bill Battaglia, William Roach, Karen Roach, Arlette del Toro and Reece Wayne. ACT Board Members are actively involved in every production. They include: Barry Katz (co-producer and co-founder of ACT); Christopher Harrington (set construction and design); Carole Czvekus, Dana Fredebaugh, and Bonnie Ladich, (costumes and props) and Sylvia and David Alexander (refreshments). There are also many dedicated volunteers, including: Mary Ellen Meeks (set), Bob Moring (lighting and set), Bruce Bornstein (sound and set), Marie Seibel playbill) and Adele Robbins (props). “ACT could not survive without the dedication of our Board, volunteers and wonderful audiences,” said Fern Katz, president, producer and co-founder of ACT. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appear in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors.

ACT’s script committee, headed by Barry Katz, selects three shows to produce every year. After Board approval, they send out the call for directors and actors by sending emails through the ACT database and posting notices on several websites, including the Town of Davie website. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends at the Davie Pine Island Multi-Purpose Center and often sell-out. The next production is Miracle on South Division Street by Tom Dudzik, which will be held on May 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 02/29/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. Heart Smart Lifestyle Changes: Reduce Heart Disease Risks As the number one killer in the United States, heart disease continues to pose a significant risk for all Americans. But, what if you discovered that initiating simple lifestyle David Lopez, MD changes could make a world of difference in preventing the disease? Well, it’s a fact. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), making healthier lifestyle choices can substantially reduce your risk of heart disease. “Small lifestyle changes may have big impact on reducing the risk of heart disease, and aid in prevention overall,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist David Lopez, MD. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Anyone can make healthy lifestyle changes. Simply making smarter choices in diet and exercise is a great start. For example, in general, everyone should get 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Dr. Lopez shares that being sedentary, or not moving, increases the risk for many chronic health illnesses, including heart disease.
Since regular, moderate physical activity promotes a healthy vascular system, remaining active can be considered a huge step in the right direction towards prevention. “The key is to start slowly and to build up endurance, increasing to 30 minutes of exercise three to five times weekly,” recommends Dr. Lopez. Overall, healthy lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on reducing the risk of heart disease include: • Exercise regularly • Maintain a healthy weight • Watch cholesterol levels • Lower blood pressure • Regulate blood sugar levels • Reduce stress • Manage diabetes, and other chronic illnesses • Stop smoking
What can you do you improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Dr. Lopez adds, “It’s never too late to evaluate your lifestyle choices, and make positive changes. Every healthy change you make can increase your quality of life, and help you live longer.”

n an effort to show their support for a student battling cancer, 20 teachers at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School offered to dye their hair or have it shaved off if the price was right. The event, which was inspired by Chase Away Cancer, raised over $12,000 for the benefit of childhood cancer research at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Center. Each teacher specified the amount it would take for them to shave their head or dye it during a student assembly. After following through with their commitments, faculty and staff presented a check for $11,100 to Summer Dowler of Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital. The donation grew during the student assembly, when Principal Jean offered to shave his beard for $100 (resulting in $427) and Mr. Heuer offered to shave his eyebrows for $200 (resulting in $300).
“I give thanks to the generosity of our students and families,” said Michell Llovet, Health Teacher and Student Activities Coordinator. “I am also thankful for our wonderful teachers and faculty who will live with these hair styles for a while. We also appreciate the stylists from Tomy Mishali Hair Design, who helped us rock the new locks!” Faculty that shaved their heads included: Mr. Lobermann ($750), Mr. Bishop ($200), Mr. Heuer ($300), Mr. Laino ($200), Mr. Colegrove ($300), Mr. Anfuso ($500), Coach Walker ($1,000), and Mr. Falcone ($5,000). Open Carry: A Bad Idea for Florida Ask the Sheriff

ith more than 350 mass shootings in the United States in 2015, gun violence weighs heavily in everyone’s thoughts. Having more guns brandished openly on our streets is not the answer, yet that is exactly what will happen if a very dangerous bill passes in Tallahassee this year. The “open carry” bill would further weaken Florida’s already permissive gun laws by allowing concealed weapon permit holders to carry their guns openly and visibly virtually anywhere. This “Wild West” open carry proposal would make Florida a more dangerous and menacing place, not a safer place. That is why the Florida Sheriffs’ Association voted overwhelmingly to oppose this reckless proposal. The U.S. Supreme Court has solidly recognized second amendment constitutional rights; but, as the Court has repeatedly made clear, these second amendment rights are not absolute. Reasonable restrictions are not only constitutionally allowed, but are essential to protect public safety.

Our laws already allow gun purchase rights and gun possession rights without the need of a permit in our homes, vehicles and the great outdoors. Public carrying of a gun is also allowed by existing law, but requires a permit based upon a background check and training. A person with the permit may legally carry a gun in public in a concealed manner. Defeating the open carry proposal would do nothing to curtail any existing gun rights in Florida. Even those openly carrying a firearm can end up less safe than before. Carrying a firearm openly can make you a target of hardened criminals who will try to steal your gun and possibly use it on you or even follow you home and break in to steal it when you’re not there. Those criminals might be deterred from trying to steal a trained law enforcement officer’s gun, but many will not hesitate to try to take one from a civilian. Respected studies, including one from Yale University, found that right-tocarry laws have little or no effect on reducing crime. In fact, the studies found that aggravated assaults increased. Black Friday 2015 gun purchases sadly set a new record in our state, with almost 15,000 people buying guns. This unsettling number is up nearly 2,000 from 2013. Gun control isn’t about restricting freedom or taking firearms legally obtained by law-abiding citizens. Instead, it is about common sense laws that help identify people with a history of violence or mental illness or who are on the FBI’s Terrorist Watchlist. I hope our elected officials in Tallahassee listen to the concern of Florida’s sheriffs – Democrats and Republicans alike – because we understand public safety better than gun industry lobbyists. I plan to testify in Tallahassee against this bill as well as against the “College Carry” bill to allow guns on school grounds. I invite you to join me in letting your legislators know your opinion.

Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? Ask the Expert
By Dr. maria Grosman
O
ver the last five decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact, such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae! Drs. How to Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
T
housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50% upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage to worry about? Also, since the real estate market is improving, think of all the equity you could build up years from now if you could wipe out your second mortgage or credit line today? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be challenging. This is especially true if the second mortgage or credit line has converted from an interest only to a principal plus interest payment. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy. When mortgage liens are removed from a property during bankruptcy proceedings, it is referred to as “stripping” the lien.
Bankruptcy courts permit a second mortgage or line of credit to be eliminated if the total amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the market value of the home. For example, if you owe $200,000 on the first mortgage of your principal residence, and $150,000 on your second mortgage of that same residence, BUT your principal residence is only worth $195,000, the $150,000 second mortgage is wiped out in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, tax free. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you can also reduce the total amount owed down to the appraised value on investment properties. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 proceedings. More importantly, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years, or even modify your mortgage through a loss mitigation program offered in South Florida bankruptcy courts. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you with annoying phone calls, or proceed with a foreclosure. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a one-of-a-kind DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced legal team. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 25 years of combined legal experience, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in one office. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney, or visit www.arcialawfirm. com to schedule your appointment.

For the Love of…Baby Boomers
B
aby boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964, represent 28% of the US population. In Cooper City, 24% of the people were born after 1946. Seventy-four percent are homeowners and only 26% are renters. In Davie, the percentages are similar. This could account for our low inventory (5.3 months of single-family home inventory for Cooper City and Davie). According to the Daily Real Estate News, some economists say the baby boomers aren’t selling their homes like previous generations did and not downsizing fast enough, which is leading to shortages of homes for sale and rising prices. Baby boomers are big players in real estate. In 2013, people age 55 and older controlled two-thirds of all home equity, according to the Federal Reserve’s most recent Survey of Consumer Finances. In previous generations, once the kids moved out of the house, empty nesters tended to downsize and move to smaller homes or rent apartments. But so far, boomers haven’t made a move. It could be that boomers like a place for their children and grandchildren to stay during the increasingly long winter months in most parts of the U.S. However, many boomers upgrade to a luxury condo – the lock-n-leave concept. These homeowners may not necessarily leave South Florida, but they will eventually give up their single family home for a much more carefree lifestyle with built-in amenities. According to The Washington Post, economists say boomers’ slower-thanexpected rate of downsizing and selling is playing a contributing role in supply, demand and pricing imbalances in local markets - not creating those imbalances. Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of REALTORS, told The Washington Post that the lingering effects of the housing crisis and the Great Recession may be the reason why more baby boomers are postponing their moves. From 2008 to 2011, home owners of all ages lost lots of equity and many home owners may still be rebuilding equity to allow them to sell and move without having to bring money to closing, Yun says. In 2014, the economy was still the boomers, and represented the vast majority of the work force. There are 76 million boomers, and boomers are still the economy. The huge growth in the economy since the 90s was due to 76 million working up to their peak earning and spending years. But Fannie Mae’s Patrick Simmons, an economics and strategic research group director, says that the “jam” in the real estate pipeline from baby boomers not moving will not likely hold for much longer. “Boomers will not inhabit this vast inventory (32 million homes nationally) forever,” he says. Their circumstances will inevitably change with age and they will move, and “their actions will reverberate through the housing market.” Therefore, now is the time to get your home on the market, while inventory is low and prices are rising. In the industry, we hear rumors about rising mortgage rates, which would affect buying power. If you are a boomer, it may be time for you to partake in the lock-n-leave, carefree lifestyle. I am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. First of all, there is in fact really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic violence has standing to seek an injunction.
The basis for such an injunction therefore must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing, either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield, to protect an individual, and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

FEBRUARY 2016 | OUR CITY DAVIE
he future of emergency care has arrived in South Broward County with the opening of Florida Medical Center’s first freestanding Emergency Center. Residents of Davie and the surrounding communities now have a comfortable and convenient place to go for their emergency care needs – 24/7, 365 days a year. The new Emergency Center, just south of I-595 and west of Nob Hill Road, next to Imperial Electric and Lighting, is a special extension of Florida Medical Center. The Emergency Center is fully equipped and staffed to treat emergent conditions, such as lacerations, orthopedic and sports injuries, dehydration, abdominal pain, respiratory problems and head injuries. Open 24/7, the center offers the high quality care of a hospital-based ER in a comfortable atmosphere and in a convenient location. Patients have access to board certified emergency medicine physicians and registered nurses on Florida Medical Center’s medical staff. The 13,626-square-foot center houses 11 treatment rooms on the first floor. The second floor of the building houses the Imaging Center of West Broward, an expansion of the center in Sunrise, which will offer CAT scans and coronary computed tomography angiograms (CTAs). Nearly every day, Nicole Davis drove by Florida Medical Center’s new freestanding Emergency Center in Davie on her way home from work. She never knew the importance it would later play in her life. “One day in particular, I felt like my heart was coming out of my chest,” she recalls. “It was pounding really fast, and I had a feeling something was wrong. The staff saw me heading towards the entrance from the parking lot with my hands on my chest and quickly grabbed a wheelchair and opened the front doors for me,” she says. “I knew right away I was where I needed to be.” A nurse immediately tested Nicole’s heart rate and determined it was 210, two to three times faster than the normal range of 60 to 100 beats per minute. “The doctors and nurses who treated me sat down by my side and calmly explained everything they were going to do to get my heart rate back to normal,” she recalls. They gave Nicole medication, and once her heart rate went down, she was transported to Florida Medical Center for further treatment. Nicole’s doctor determined that the “pounding” she felt in her chest was a result of premature ventricular contractions, which are extra, abnormal heartbeats that disrupt the regular heart rhythm. Since leaving the hospital, she has been taking medication to help control her heart rate and hasn’t experienced anymore cardiac issues. “I felt like a VIP,” Nicole wrote. “I would definitely recommend both facilities to my loved ones. Keep up the good work!” The Emergency Center is located at 10230 W. State Road 84 in Davie. For more information, please visit www.ERcare247.com. It’s Their Business
Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy
S
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods, and they are keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do.
What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism.
Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program.
Does the HCG have side effects? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe.
Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director
Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”? Nine years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past eight years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back.
How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. If they miss an appointment, we call them. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss. We also give injectable prescription B12. How much can clients expect to lose? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days.
What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and resculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price. Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
M
ichael Guiliano recently lost 59 pounds on the diet. He was anxious to share his story to motivate others to do the same.
Why did you go on the diet? I was always
very thin. In the past few years, however, I gained some weight and my cholesterol and blood pressure became elevated. I was feeling very uncomfortable with myself and wanted to get back to my normal weight.
Was the diet difficult? The first week was challenging, but after that it was easy.
How are you feeling now? I am off my
cholesterol and blood pressure medications. I visit the gym four to five times a week and watch what I eat. I feel the best I have ever felt!
Michael Guiliano lost 59 pounds on the Slender Fit U diet.
Would you recommend the diet? I already recommended the diet to several people, who have also been successful on the program.
Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.”
Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www. SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. This makes it an easy transition onto stabilization, as well as regular eating and regular life. Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
Jessica lost 38 lbs. in 6 weeks.
