Spring Has Arrived
S
pring is traditionally the welcome sign of
renewal and progress all around the world. For our neighbors to the north, it means the end (hopefully) of another brutal winter packed with powerful blizzards that blanketed much of the midwest and northeast. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Boston area is still digging out from another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. Here in South Florida, we’re fortunate to live the perpetual “Spring Break.” People from all over the country, and world, flock to Florida to take refuge from the cold and enjoy our mild temperatures, calming sea breezes and white sandy beaches. But, you don’t need to be a snowbird or tourist to enjoy all that Florida has to offer. With Spring Break later this month, why not spend some time enjoying the many splendors of the Sunshine State? Where else can you see endangered manatees, pre-historic alligators and pretty pink flamingos all in the same day? Where else can you relax and sunbathe during the day and then dance the night away on South Beach? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sand bar and then pull up for a delicious bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway? Only here in South Florida. On this happy note, let’s take some time to enjoy all that Florida has to offer and have some FUN! Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Children Test Their Creativity at the Annual EGGstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest By Debby Teich
W
hat is the best way to prevent an egg from breaking when
it is dropped from the top of a Davie fire truck ladder? On March 25, from 10am to 6pm, kids of all ages will do their best to figure out the answer during Young At Art Museum’s Annual EGGstravaganza! Egg Drop Contest at Young At Art Museum. For $2, visitors to Young at Art can purchase an Egg Drop Kit that is filled with everyday objects and recycled materials. The children use their Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math skills to build a “nest” or “parachute” that will help cushion the egg. At 2pm, members of the Davie Fire Rescue Department will carry the eggs up an engine’s extension ladder. While the kids are yelling “drop those eggs,” fire fighters will release the eggs one at a time to see if they can survive the 50-foot fall. Depending on the outcome, the kids will hold up signs with words like “splat” and “cracked.” Prizes will be awarded to the winners. The Eggstravaganza attracts children of all ages. When they are not successful, many return the following year to try a new approach. Last year, fire fighters dropped more than 200 eggs and fewer than a dozen landed intact. “Our Annual EGGstravaganza! Egg

Autistic Teens and Young Adults to Play in 2nd Annual Tee It Up Golf Event By Debby Teich
T
he 2nd Annual Tee It U p Golf Event offers teens and young
adults with ASD the opportunity to play golf in a safe and secure environment. The free event is sponsored by PGA golf Pro Gary Braeseke and the GB Golf Center, with support from the Autism Society of Broward County. It will be held on March 13, from 4:30pm to 7pm, at Cooper Colony Country Club, in Cooper City. Unlike most golf tournaments, there is no fee to participate, no money raised, and no experience required. It is simply a chance for teens and young adults on the autism spectrum to play golf and have fun interacting with their peers. Registration is at 4:30pm and the golfers will start playing at 5pm. Each of the players will receive an award at the dinner, which begins at 7pm. Players should register in advance so organizers have an accurate head count. Golfers can either play up to nine holes on the course or participate in the Drive and Putt Skills Challenge. Each group of players on the course will be paired up with student volunteer Some of last year’s volunteer caddies included (l to r): Jared Barclay, Jonathan caddies that will roll their bags Cachon, Juan Pablo Arrazola, Manuel Kent to each hole. Photo Credit: Teenography. Jared Barclay, senior at University School of NSU, got the idea for the tournament while volunteering for Golfing Fore Autism. The Autism Society offers the free program at the Cooper Colony Country Club. On Friday nights, middle and high school students with ASD buddy-up with student coaches from local high schools to learn to play the game.
“The Tee It Up Golf Event is important for the kids, because they get to take part of something that is bigger than just the typical Friday night program,” said Barclay. “They put the skills they learn there to use where everybody can see, which is really rewarding for them.” PGA professional Gary Braeseke, who has been teaching golf in the South Florida area for more than 20 years, runs the Friday night program. Participants learn the physical mechanics of the golf swing, rules of golf, and golf etiquette. Some play nine holes, while others hit balls on the driving range. The teens who par- Caddy Cole Bianco (l) with participant Bey Hooi (r) at last year’s event. ticipate have an opportunity to build their self-confidence and social skills, as they exercise, make friends and have fun. There is no equipment or experience necessary. “The kids and their parents look forward to coming each week,” said Braeseke. The program helps them set goals and improve motor skills. Above that, there is a sense of belonging to something and a common interest they can enjoy together. We encourage all children with Autism to join us.” Parent and peer volunteers needed. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the middle. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Davie Fire Rescue Department and Red Cross Get Smoke Alarms Working By Debby Teich
M
any people do not test their smoke alarms as often as
they should. When there is a fire, they may not have enough time to flee from fast spreading smoke. Davie Fire Rescue Department, Red Cross volunteers and Broward College students recently partnered to visit Davie homes
to make sure they had working smoke alarms. “Your ability to get out of your house during a fire depends on advance warning from smoke detectors,” said Phillip Holste, Development Administrator for the Town of Davie. “Working smoke detectors are the first line of defense that we can have within our homes to protect ourselves and our families. Properly installed and working smoke alarms reduce our chances of dying in a fire within our home by more than half.” The volunteers canvassed 200 homes in the Everglades Lakes Mobile Home Park Community in Davie. They installed 54 smoke detectors and changed 38 smoke detector batteries. The effort was part of the MLK Day of Service and the Red Cross’ nationwide campaign to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent over the next five years. The Red Cross is asking every household in America to take two simple steps that can save lives: checking or installing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills at home. For information on smoke detectors and home fire safety prevention, visit www.redcross.org/prepare/ disaster/home-fire.
Actors Community Theatre Presents En Avant! An Evening with Tennessee Williams By Debby Teich
T
his month , Davie residents can
experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. William Shuman will be returning to Actors Community Theatre of Davie with three performances of his critically acclaimed, award-winning show En Avant! An Evening with Tennessee Williams. Performances will be held on March 27, at 8pm, and March 28, at 2pm & 7pm. During the 75 minute, one-man show, Shuman presents a highly personal impression of the man he believes to be the single greatest American playwright. Since Shuman performed the show in Davie in January 2014, it has continued to evolve in terms of structure, text, and intensity. Tennessee Williams wrote more than 40 full length plays and over 50 one act plays. He published 53 short stories, 2 volumes of poetry, a book of essays, 2 novels, and at least one original screenplay. Although he had hundreds of sexual encounters, he only loved three men. The one he yearned for all his life left him after less than a month to marry a woman. The show deals with the family, loves, work (with emphasis on the early plays) and demons of this admittedly ‘wounded’ man. Shuman began writing the play in 2010, while

working with teacher/director Austin Pendleton. Like Tennessee, he kept revising it as he learned more about him. When he was in New York City, he connected with Professor Ruis Woertendyke, who directed the current version. The play was first performed at Andrews Living Arts in Ft. Lauderdale in November 2011, under the direction of Robert Nation. Since then, it has been seen at many different theaters and festivals. In 2013, it was performed at the NYC International Fringe Festival, where it received the Overall Excellence Award for Solo Performance. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater. It all started when the Davie Town Council requested that an ad appear in the Town’s local paper asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first community theatre. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. All ACT productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance and $8 for groups of 10 or more. Town of Southwest Ranches Reminds Residents That Water Matters By Debby Teich
W
The Town of Southwest Ranches has participated in the event for the last 13 years.
hether you use water
for drinking, swimming, fishing or irrigation, it is a vital part of your everyday life. Many take it for granted, thinking that we could never run out of it. However, it is actually our most precious resource. On March 14, from 9am to 3pm, the Town of Southwest Ranches will join many other municipalities in Broward County for the 13th Annual Water Matters Day at Tree Tops Park in Davie. Water Matters Day is Broward County’s signature water conservation event. It helps Broward residents make the connection between their daily activities and the impact they
have on our local water resources and natural environment. It is an opportunity for them to learn about local and regional water resources; how water is managed and protected; and how Broward County is planning for future water needs. Participants are encouraged to practice what they learn. The fun, activity-filled event is for everyone - from adults to children, experts to laypeople. It includes 35 exhibits and booths, face painting, crafts, bounce house, rain barrel workshops, giveaways/raffles, music, a Food Truck Invasion and more. The focus is on yard maintenance and watering, surface water pollution and drainage. These are areas that are frequently overlooked, but where individual residents can influence great change. The workshops provide in-depth information and an opportunity for learning in small groups where questions can be answered personally. While parents are learning about creating a NatureScape or choosing the right plants for their yards, their children can participate in various activities, such as planting flowers to take home. They can also help their parents collect giveaways, which in the past have included rain gauges, automatic shut-off devices for irrigation systems, native trees and plants, and garden mulch. The Town of Southwest Ranches has participated in the event since it started. This year, the Town’s booth will highlight the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitat Program. Using borrowed plants from local nurseries, Southwest Ranches volunteers will set up a temporary display to show people how to certify their yards. They will also discuss alternative ways to garden in order to attract birds, mammals, insects, and other wildlife that is native to the area. “Our demonstration garden has become a favorite at the event and we are excited to be able to present it again this year,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “Each year the design is a bit different, but it’s all set up to highlight ways to encourage people to beautify their landscape while supporting wildlife. Tree Tops Park is located at 3900 S.W. 100th Ave. in Davie. Admission to Water Matters Day is free. For information, visit www.broward.org/watermatters.
Davie Resident Leads Fight against Breast Cancer By Debby Teich
A
lthough Barbara E pes of Davie has not personally been
affected by breast cancer, she knows many women who have. They include an elementary school best friend, two college roommates and her close friend, Lisa Boccard. For the past 10 years, she has made it her mission to raise awareness for women’s wellness. On March 28, she will join approximately 1,500 men and women for the Coral Springs Half-Marathon and Race For Women’s Wellness 5K Run/Walk. Proceeds will benefit the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund to provide free screening mammograms and breast treatments to women who otherwise would not be able to afford them. “Don’t wait until breast cancer strikes someone you know,” said Epes, who has been coordinating the race since 2008. “The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the rate of survival. Screenings help save lives.” The half marathon starts at 6am and the 5K begins at 7:30am at the Coral Springs Tennis Center. Half marathon participants must be able to complete the race in four hours, which is an 18-minute mile pace, and must be at least 12 years old. Both the half marathon and 5K participants will receive finisher medals and Dri-FIT shirts. There will be no race day registration. Age group awards will be given. There will be entertainment along the route. “Our participants are from all walks of life,” said Epes. “Some are serious runners and others are breast cancer survivors. Many run/walk in memory of someone or to honor someone currently battling breast cancer.” Organizers are still looking for people who want to be involved, but don’t want to run. Volunteers are needed for water stations along the route, at registration and the finish line, for cutting and serving the runners’ food, and more. “Get involved now and be part of the solution for local women,” said Epes. “One hundred percent of the money we raise for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund stays in our communities.” Lisa Boccard was first diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer at the age of 29. She had no family history of cancer and was misdiagnosed for nine months. She

was told by doctors that she was too young to have breast cancer. She is a 24-year breast cancer survivor who has battled and beaten cancer multiple times. “Many times a non-profit is named for someone who has passed,” said Epes. “The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund is named for a woman who is very much still alive. Her spirit to live and survive is an inspiration to all that meet her and provides hope to women with cancer.” The race has raised over $150,000 since its inception. Epes says that they are hoping to raise $35,000 this year. To volunteer, send an email to kelleinthezone@yahoo.com. To register, visit www.browardhealth.org/ womensrace.

Challenging, Inspiring, Energizing. Real Clients Share What They Love About Ellen’s Ultimate Workout
E
llen ’ s U ltimate Workout is now entering its 15th year of
being the place to go to get in shape and, more importantly, stay in shape. With classes ranging from Ballet Barre and Spinning to the Ultimate Workout, a.k.a. the original OrangeTheory Fitness workout created by owner and fitness guru Ellen Latham, it’s no wonder clients have only positive things to say about South Florida’s most complete fitness studio.
Dr. Mazyar and Ida Rouhani
Dr. Mazyar Rouhani
Dr. Mazyar Rouhani keeps himself healthy by doing the Ultimate Workout, Spinning, Hot Yoga and Deep Stretch, and Ultimate Drills. “As an emergency medicine doctor and physician entrepreneur, I struggle with stress relief daily. Ellen’s classes improve my cardiovascular fitness, and its competitiveness enables me to raise my game to a higher performance level, while simultaneously depleting stress hormones and releasing mood-enhanc-
ing chemicals that help me cope with stress better.” Ida Rouhani likes that Ellen’s Ultimate Workout offers six studios under one roof. “Being a busy mother of three, the variety of classes offered at Ellen’s allows me to fit in my Ultimate, Pilates, Spin, Trampoline and Hot Yoga all in one place. The instructors continue to motivate and inspire me to mentally and physically better myself. I played sports and exercised all of my life never feeling as fit as I do now.”
Francine Shabsels
Francine Shabsels says in shape by taking five different classes each week. “I am a 13 year veteran of Ellen’s. The commitment to my routine has brought me a Ida Rouhani healthy and fit body, a reduction in the stress of my career and life in general, and friendships I have formed along the way. My time with Ellen is not optional, it is essential. My routine includes Pilates and Ballet Barre with Jen Mirk, which always offers something new, something torturous (in a good way) and something that awakens muscles that I didn’t even know I had. I attend more traditional Pilates and Spin classes with Ellen, bringing back form and the basics. To stay flexible, there is nothing better than a Yoga Raja Stretch class with Christine. That is the dessert in my menu of classes. Delicious!”
Mike and Marcy Hirsch

Mike Hirsch recently added Spinning to his workout regime of Ultimate and Drills. “I started exercising at Ellen’s upon the recommendation of my wife, Marcy. She came home one day and said she tried this incredible class called the Ultimate Workout, and I should give it a shot. I remember

barely making it through that Ultimate with Bea and thinking it was one of the toughest workouts I had ever done. Now, over two years later, I have never looked back and am a regular client. There is nothing like the rush you get running a sprint in the 50th minute of an Ultimate class with Casey screaming on encouragement to Mike and Marcy Hirsch push you harder. If there is any man out there thinking this is a gym solely for women, you should definitely give Ellen’s a shot. A Wednesday night Drills class with Casey will quickly change your mind.” Marcy Hirsh can be found at Ellen’s four or five days a week taking Ultimate, Pilates and Spinning classes. “My journey started two years ago by signing up for the Weight Loss Challenge. I did two consecutive Challenges with Bea and lost over 20 pounds and countless sizes and gained more muscle and confidence. I started adding Pilates to the mix and immediately saw the difference that made in my body and core strength. Working out at Ellen’s has prepared me for personal challenges I never knew I could accomplish - 5K’s, obstacle course races, and an intense four-day hike on the Inca Trail in Peru. My husband is also addicted to Ellen’s and I know having support from him has definitely helped me. I am proud of the example we have set for our young daughters who take Kids Yoga classes with Miss Cindy. Ellen’s is truly a place for everyone in the family.”
Anne Crocker Sosiak
Anne Crocker Sosiak is a Registered Nurse who rarely misses her weekly Spinning and Pilates classes. “My introduction to Ellen’s began when Anne Crocker Sosiak I observed my colleague, Cindy Braun, physically transform herself by taking fitness classes at Ellen’s. She encouraged me to attend a trial class and that’s all it took to get me hooked. Through lifestyle changes along with my Spinning and private Pilates classes, I have accomplished healthy changes in my weight, become stronger and improved my overall health. The fitness instructors are experienced, knowledgeable, and provide personalized guidance for all fitness levels. When you enter Ellen’s you feel the energy and enthusiasm from the staff, instructors and other clients. This is what keeps me coming back.”
Maria Lessner
Maria Lessner is not only a client, she’s an instructor. Maria can be found taking the Ultimate Barbell, Hot Yoga, Spin, the Ultimate Workout and Pilates classes, plus

she teaches the Ultimate Kids class. “The energy at Ellen’s studio is amazing. She has a wonderful group of professional trainers who always inspire and challenge me. I think I am the most fit I have been in my life and it makes me excited to see that all the hard work I put into these workouts show results. I am grateful to Ellen for giving me the opportunity this year to teach the Ultimate Kids class for ages 8 to 13. I hope to inspire kids to realize all the benefits that come with starting exercising and eating healthy at a young age.”
Kimberly Starks
Kimberly Starks
After having a baby, Kimberly Starks got her body back in shape by doing the Ultimate Workout. “I have been working out at Ellen’s for the last three years. After having my second child, I needed something that would push me beyond my comfort zone. Casey’s Ultimate Workout doesn’t disappoint. Every class is unique and she pushes you to places you never thought possible. My physical abilities and strength have increased dramatically since joining Ellen’s. I love the intensity and high energy of the classes and the high that I feel after leaving it all at the treadmill is amazing. The discomfort is so worth the results.”
Ellen’s Ultimate Workout offers a complete menu of classes for all ages. With 400 clients walking through the door each day, it is the place to go for Pilates on the Reformer, Spinning, Hot Yoga, Ballet Barre, Trampoline, and the famous Ultimate Workout, which inspired OrangeTheory Fitness. Ellen’s also offers classes just for children, including Miss Cindy’s Kids Yoga and Miss Maria’s Kids Ultimate. Discover the difference at Ellen’s Ultimate Workout yourself with one free trial class. re you feeling run down and stressed? Are
financial pressures, emotional stress, poor eating habits, smoking or drugs causing havoc on your adrenal glands? Have you felt as though you just cannot seem to get yourself together? Is it hard for you to relax or to get exercise? Do you have difficulty getting restful sleep? Do you find that you get sick more often? Are you gaining weight? If so, then you like many others may be experiencing symptoms of Adrenal Stress. What is Adrenal Stress? Adrenal Stress is a collection of signs and symptoms that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections. Its paramount symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal stress and may not have any of the sings of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, tiredness or “gray” feelings. People suffering from adrenal stress often have to use coffee, colas, red bull or other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. Although it affects millions of people, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Adrenal stress can wreak havoc with your life. With each increment of reduction in adrenal function every organ and system in your body is more profoundly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart and cardiovascular system, and even sex drive. Your body does its best to make up for the under functioning adrenals, but it does so at a price. What causes Adrenal Stress? It is produced when your adrenal glands cannot adequately meet the demands of stress. The adrenal glands mobilize your body’s responses to every kind of stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological) through hormones that regulate energy production and storage, immune function, heart rate, muscle tone, and other processes that enable you to cope with the stress. Whether you have an emotional crisis, such as a death of a loved one; a physical crisis, such as major surgery; or any type of severe repeated or constant stress in your life, your adrenals have to respond to the stress and maintain homeostasis. If their response is inadequate, you are likely to experience some degree of adrenal stress. How common is Adrenal Stress? It is estimated that approximately 66% of the population has some degree of low Cortisol. How can I tell if my adrenals are fatigued? ▸▸ Tendency to gain weight ▸▸ Reduced sex drive ▸▸ Unable to remember things and unclear thinking ▸▸ Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5pm ▸▸ Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning

Joshua’s Path Offers Life Planning Seminars for Adult Children with Special Needs By Debby Teich
P
arents or sibling caregivers of disabled adults are con -
stantly faced with challenging issues, including how to plan for the future. Over the next few months, Joshua’s Path: Plan for Life is offering a series of free educational seminars in Davie to help them answer the question, “What is going to happen to my special needs adult child when I am no longer able to care for him or her?” The seminars are open to the entire community. Joshua’s Path was created by the Jewish Federation of Broward County and the Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward in order to help identify and address the needs, concerns, and challenges faced by family caregivers and their disabled family member. It offers information, support, and advocacy in the life planning process for adult or adolescent children with developmental, physical or mental health disability. The free service is open to any family member residing in Broward County who is a caregiver to an adult or adolescent with a developmental, physical, or mental health disability. “Caring for a disabled loved one can be overwhelming, and planning for their future, a daunting task,” said Mindy Eilender, Director of Joshua’s Path. “At Joshua’s Path, we want to help make that process easier. By attending the life planning seminars, families can meet with experts in the field of special needs, learn
about various planning options and available community resources, and get many of their questions answered.” The free seminars will be held at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center. They are as follows: ▸ The Roadmap to Legal & Financial Security: Addresses important aspects of financial, legal, & estate planning, including topics such as guardianship, letters of intent, and special needs trusts. March 19, from 2-4pm ▸ Exploring Residential Options: Participants will be provided a comprehensive overview of residential options, such as independent, supportive, assisted living, and group homes. April 30, from 2-4pm ▸ Mental Health Resources: Offers guidance with locating appropriate local resources, effective navigation of community health settings, and strategies for managing potential challenges presented by the family member. May 21, from 2-4pm ▸ Arriving at Optimal Independence: Provides information and resources regarding vocational rehabilitation, employment/supported employment, and social & recreational needs. June 25, from 2-4pm On June 1, from 11:30am-2:30pm, there will be a free Community Resource Fair at the Soref Jewish Community Center in Plantation. Families seeking out community providers and agencies which serve the special needs community will find everything they need in one place. Parents that need assistance with identifying current and future needs of a disabled adult, as well as appropriate community resources, can also schedule a free one-on-one consultation at Goodman Jewish Family Services. I Care I Cure to Host 8th Annual 5K Walk/Run & Family Fun Day By Debby Teich
T
hroughout the year , the I C are I Cure (ICIC) Childhood Cancer Foundation helps raise awareness and funds for cutting edge research for targeted and gentler cures for childhood cancer. On March 8, runners and walkers of all ages will gather at the BB&T Center for the 8th Annual I Care I Cure...I Run 5K & Family Fun Day and Mile Run of Color Fun to raise awareness and funds for the Davie-based foundation. Last year, more than 2,000 participants attended the event, which is ICIC’s largest fundraiser. Team Carnaggie from University School of NSU Middle School in Davie is one of many teams that will be walking in honor of someone this year. The middle school students formed a team to help support a teacher, Anthony Carnaggie, in his fight to beat cancer, as well as to support ICIC’s mission. “Recently, our friend and colleague, Dr. Carnaggie, was diagnosed with brain cancer,” said Jaimee Glazer, team captain and I Care I Cure Middle School Club sponsor. “We are walking and volunteering on his behalf, and to bring awareness to all in search of more humane treatments for all types of cancer. Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another. This race day enables my students and the community at large to focus on the importance of the day and finding a gentler cure for cancer.”

Broward College North Campus Creates MLK Memorial Garden By Debby Teich

fought for freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. On January 19, Martin Luther King Day, 39 volunteers at the North Campus of Broward College honored his vision by creating an MLK Memorial Garden at the entrance to Building 46, which needed some sprucing up. “Student Life wanted to plan a project that would have a lasting impact on the appearance of the campus and help improve first impressions, while providing a service opportunity to the college and community,” said Joseph Pickering, Broward College North Campus Student Life Director. Students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members, who ranged in age from two to 60, participated in the peace garden planting event. After clearing out dead plants in the designated space, they placed the new plants, which included bougainvillea bushes to add color, as well as desert cassia trees and lantanas to line the edges. After the planting was completed, they added eucalyptus mulch to finish the project. A permanent sign will also be installed in the garden. It will say: Legacy Garden; “Greatness is
determined by service.”; Established: January 19, 2015; Dedicated to the Broward College and community volunteers that made this event a success. “This process taught student and staff volunteers about hard work, teamwork and how to be leaders,” added Pickering. “It was a wonderful opportunity to

have the students and community come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service to others by creating this beautiful space on campus.” Many others were working hard on the same day to positively impact the local area. With funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, organized several special volunteer opportunities to transform January 19 into a day of volunteerism in the community to honor Dr. King’s legacy. The Broward College MLK Day of Service Awards were offered to local community groups to develop service projects that address education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families’ issues, public safety or neighborhood projects. A total of 24 awards were issued to 20 organizations, totaling $96,406. Some of them included: a peace garden at Oriole Elementary School in Lauderdale Lakes; Health and Safety Fair at Hope Outreach Center; Adopt-A-Meal Program at Ronald McDonald House; Marine Science Education Service Learning Project and more.

Wills vs. Trusts - What’s the Difference and Which Should I Use? By Madeleine Q. Mannello Scott, Esq.
M
any clients who are considering their
estate planning for the first time become overwhelmed by the vocabulary involved in the process and the many different planning options available to them. In particular, clients are often confused about the difference between a will and a trust, and, more importantly, which option is best for them. I hope that the brief discussion below will help to clarify some of these questions for you, so that you can be all the more prepared for your first meeting with an estate planning attorney.
Q: What is a will? A: A will is simply a document that provides your instructions regarding what should be done with your assets after you die. In the will, you will name the person who you wish to be in charge of managing the distribution of your assets, paying your debts, and ensuring that all of the wishes contained in your will are realized. Q: What is a Revocable Living Trust? A: A Revocable Living Trust is a document that creates a legal relationship in which one person, the trustee, holds property for the benefit of another, the beneficiary. The person who sets up the trust, the settlor, may also be named as trustee until he or she dies. Think of the trust as a big box. You, as the settlor, would place all of the assets that you wish to protect into the box. Property such as real estate, stocks, bonds, and personal possessions may all be placed “inside” the box. The trustee then protects the contents of the box and distributes the contents in accordance with the instructions that you laid out in the trust document. Your trust may be set up for your own benefit during your lifetime, and then for the benefit of another after your death. As the name implies, this type of trust may be amended or revoked during your lifetime.

Q: Which option is best? A: There is no simple answer to this question, as there are many different factors to consider when choosing a will over a trust. The decision is a personal one that must be carefully considered with the assistance of an estate planning attorney in order to meet your needs. A will is normally less costly to set up, but it must go through a legal process called “probate.” Probate can sometimes be both lengthy and costly, and may also result in legal battles between family members. Your assets cannot be distributed until after the probate process is complete. Further, during the probate process, your debts, which may include an estate tax, will be paid before your assets are distributed to your heirs. This, quite naturally, diminishes the amount of your heirs’ inheritance. Finally, your will becomes a public record once it is filed with the probate court. A trust, on the other hand, is usually more complicated and more expensive to set up and requires constant and meticulous management for the life of the trust. Unlike a will, however, the trust would avoid the probate process. This means that your assets would be distributed to your beneficiaries immediately, unless your trust instructs otherwise. Another advantage of a trust is that it allows you to “rule from the grave” by including provisions requiring performance of certain tasks (such as graduating from college or attaining a certain age) before the assets can be distributed to a particular beneficiary. Further, trusts can be used to plan for possible incapacity due to illness, and can be used to make sure that your bills are paid and that your family is provided for. Additionally, trusts may be utilized as part of a tax and financial plan that will help to lessen the impact of estate taxes on the distributions that your beneficiaries stand to receive. Finally, unlike wills, trusts are private and do not become part of the public record. As you can see, choosing between a will and a trust is not a simple task. Be sure to consult with your estate planning attorney and financial planner to make sure you fully-understand these and other estate planning tools. Madeleine Q. Should I Have My Child’s Wisdom Teeth Extracted? By Dr. Alon Grosman
S

extracted? This is a question I am asked frequently, especially at the end of orthodontic treatment. The question is very logical. We have been working to align the teeth for two years and everyone is excited to unveil their new smile to the world. The last thing that anyone wants is to leave the wisdom teeth to spoil our great work. On the other hand, the extraction of third molars is usually carried out by an Oral Surgeon using some form of sedation. The decision to refer must be thought out and based on science. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the decision to extract the third molars (aka Wisdom Teeth) depends on their meeting all of the following criteria: completely erupted and non-impacted, completely functional (in the proper bite), painless, free of decay, disease-free,

capable of being properly cleaned. As can be seen from this list, the academy of oral surgery leans heavily toward extraction. This list fails to aid in my decision making in most cases as the average teen completes orthodontic treatment between 13-14 yrs old and the wisdom teeth erupt between 17-21 years old. What I prefer to use as a guide is the anatomy of the mandible (lower jaw) and the developmental stage of the third molars. For example, there is a nerve that runs the length of the lower border of the mandible called the inferior alveolar nerve. Among other things, this nerve provides for our feeling in the lower lip. The third molars develop right over this nerve and it is not until around 15-16 yrs old that the roots of the teeth tend to approximate and in some cases even wrap around the nerve. I allow the third molar to grow and hopefully find a reasonable eruption path prior to the completion of development of its roots. If I find that there is too much pressure being placed on the 12 year molars, I will refer for extraction of the third molars prior to the full development of the roots. What this accomplishes is the removal of the third molars with a much reduced chance of damage to the nerve. As in most situations, timing is everything. Our protocol consists of consistent retainer wear as soon as braces are removed. We then monitor the third molars until they either come in or are removed. Consistent retainer wear is more than sufficient in maintaining that beautiful smile through the process. In fact, we are recommending long term night time wear of the retainer even if the third molars are removed. As it turns out, the eruption of the third molars is the most well known, but not the only, factor which can cause shifting of the teeth over time. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. A Good Agent Vs. A Great Agent
Large or small, We Top ALL!
By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor
I
n the legal profession , there is a saying that “a
good lawyer knows the law, but a great lawyer knows the judge!” In Real Estate, “a good agent can get your home sold, but a great agent gets your home closed.” If you have lived in your home for years, it can be difficult to detach yourself and look at your home objectively. If your goal is to sell, you need a great agent who knows how to sell and close. Here’s what a great agent may suggest based on individual situations: ▸▸ Engage in a pre-sale inspection. It is easier to sell a home “as-is” when you have determined what challenges exist and either fix or state same on the Seller’s Disclosure. ▸▸ Involve yourself with sales prep. Previously, I provided a list of the twenty top things to do to stage your home for showings. First impressions are so important to that anxious buyer. ▸▸ Choose an experienced Realtor. Instead of picking a friend of a friend or a relative, take the time to interview a local expert with an excellent reputation for listing homes. If you want to deal with one of the best agents in your marketplace, how do you know you are picking the best agent? According to Steve Harney of KCM Blog: ▸▸ A great agent tells you the truth about the price. Too many agents just take the listing at any price and then try to the “work the seller” for a price correction later. Demand that the agent prove to you that they have a belief in the price they are suggesting. Make them show you their strategic, custom marketing plan. ▸▸ A great agent understands your family’s timetable. Timing the move is emotionally draining – especially for school-aged children and older teens. Your agent cannot pick the exact date of your move, but she should exert any influence she can to make it work. ▸▸ A great agent removes as many challenges as possible. It is imperative that your agent knows how to handle the challenges that will arise. An agent’s ability to negotiate is critical in this market. ▸▸ A great agent helps with your family’s relocation. The coordination of the move is crucial. My company has a full-time relocation service which can help my sellers relocate to just about anywhere around the world. ▸▸ A great agent gets your home CLOSED! Marketing, selling and closing your home is why you hired your agent in the first place. Therefore, if she discovers something that needs to be done to attain your goals (i.e. price correction, repair, sprucing, staging, and/or removing clutter), a great agent has the guts to inform you. Good agents know how to deliver good news. Great agents know how to deliver tough news. In today’s market, YOU NEED A GREAT AGENT! For more information regarding the latest market trends graphs and matrix, visit www.ZonaHorton.com or send an e-mail to Horton.z@ewm.com.

Advanced Treatment for Cancer-causing Polyps Without Surgery Removing polyps from the colon is standard practice to reduce the chance of colorectal cancer. But for polyps that are large or hard to reach, their removal during a colonoscopy is a challenge.
Tolga Erim, DO Cleveland Clinic Florida Gastroenterologist
Though many patients have traditional surgery for these complex polyps, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologists are using new
tools and techniques that require no stitches or long recovery times. It’s a procedure called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a tiny camera, to which small surgery tools are attached. Mucosal refers to the tissue of the colon and resection means surgical removal. “Many patients and physicians may not be familiar with EMR or do not have access to it locally, so these polyps are often removed using traditional surgery,” says Cleveland Clinic gastroenterologist Tolga Erim, DO who specializes in advanced endoscopy
World class neurology and cancer care in South Florida. Our new center offers leading expertise and the most advanced treatments.
techniques. “But EMR gives patients another choice. With experienced specialists performing it, there is less risk of bleeding, and a much shorter recovery time compared to surgery.” During the procedure, Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians employ several standardized procedures to reach and remove the polyps. “For example, by injecting saline into the tissue, they can raise the polyp in order to resect it completely. In addition, newer snares, or metal loops, and tools to cauterize (seal) blood vessels make removal very efficient,” Dr. Erim says. According to reports from the National Institutes of Health, patients with large or complex polyps should be referred for EMR to a specialty facility such as Cleveland Clinic Florida, so they can avoid unnecessary surgery. “We’ve treated patients from as far away as South America,” Dr. Erim says. “Because of our expertise and experience with EMR, this is the appropriate place to come for hard-totreat polyps. We’ve become a referral center for it.” Once the procedure is over, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for a few days although you can continue on with regular day to day activities the next day. The patient’s diet will need to be altered so that they eat soft foods and drink fluids for the days following the procedure. After about six to twelve months, a follow-up appointment is needed to make sure the entire lesion was removed. After a followup procedure with the specialist who performed the EMR, patients can return to their regular physician.

National Award Winning
State of the Town
New families to our school receive up to $1000 credit voucher
By Davie Mayor Judy Paul
L
as an address to the Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. I have included portions of that speech in this article. All around Davie there are representations of the remarkable progress we have made over the past year. Last year, I stressed our focus of COMMUNITY FIRST and declared the state of Davie to be vital and strong. We have successfully continued these efforts through our pursuit of balanced economic development, job creation, and a steady path of fiscal prudence. Our balanced economic development is highlighted by two demographic factors encouraging our growth: our education and our disposable income. The Town is fortunate to be home to the South Florida Education Center, and as a matter of note, over 30% of Davie adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher degree (45% higher than the national average). The Town’s median household income of $59,362 exceeds national and state averages (29% of these households boast incomes exceeding $100,000). These factors encourage businesses to move to Davie as they seek a highly educated workforce and a community that can support their business development. In 2014, the residential boom continued as a mixture of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments began including approximately 120-single family homes (Taralyne Oaks and Sterling Ranches) and 225 townhomes (Signature at Davie Phase II, Bella Terra, and Vaquero Trails). This year three apartment projects totaling 750 units (Palm Ranch, Lakeview Residences, and Shalimar) will complete their site development and begin vertical construction. Once these projects are completed, the Town’s population will be near or at 100,000 residents. The Town is also seeing a continued influx of new commercial and industrial projects. Bridge Development has broken ground on Bridge Point, a 165,000-square-foot industrial project on Burris Road. We have many projects underway on University Drive, including the Tower Shops expansion of 55,000 square feet, façade renovations at the Shoppes of Arrowhead, and the new HCA emergency room. The Town will also be the new home to Porsche and Alfa Romeo car dealerships along the I-75 corridor. Finally, I am proud to announce that Whole Foods had its grand opening on February 11. The Town also successfully sold its 25 acres of the 595 Commerce Center plat to Industrial Designs International (IDI) to build flex warehouse space. In 2014, for the third consecutive year, the Town was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Award, which evaluates operating budgets against a list of mandatory and general criteria. Also, the Town has been awarded the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for our fiscal year 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), the first time since 1999. This program was established to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles. Finally, the Town’s bond rating was raised by Standard and Poor’s to AA+ with a stable outlook. The Town also continues to address its capital infrastructure. In our FY2015 budget, we allocated $8.5 million to complete 45 projects encompassing parks and open space, public safety, roadway, and water/wastewater improvements. Notable accomplishments over the past year included construction of Peaceful Ridge Park, the Town’s first dog park, and the expansion of Veterans Park, including a new lighted lake fountain; and the new Orange Drive culvert, which was completed without closing the roadway. Over the next several years, the Town will be undertaking major roadway improvements to Davie Road and Nova Drive. The Town was awarded funding by the Broward MPO for these projects and additional funding to continue the enhancement project throughout the Downtown Davie Corridor with completion by 2018. We continue to maintain our vast open spaces and more than 175 miles of multi-use trails. The Town seeks to capitalize on what makes us unique and sets us apart from the rest of Broward County and that is our agricultural roots and equestrian culture. Have a great Saint Patrick’s Day!

ask the Sheriff
Women Making History! By Sheriff Scott J. Israel
A
s we observe Women ’ s H istory M onth in
March, we want to recognize and honor the many ways women continue to make Broward County a great place to live, work and visit. Women have led the charge toward full equality in the workplace and are critical in building the strong moral character of our county’s youth. Over the years, women made strong choices that brought historic changes in our county. In 1974, two women became the first female road patrol deputies to join the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Since then, many women have chosen a career in law enforcement. Today, I am proud to say that we have women throughout BSO who are in management and command – places and positions that, historically, were held by men. Our chief of staff is a woman as are others with the title of major, director, captain and lieutenant. Women also serve as K-9 handlers, the crime lab director and undercover detectives, just to name a few. However, leadership is not about being the first woman in any position, but about attracting the best person for the job. Since taking office over two years ago, my administration has created a level playing field so that women can more fairly compete for higher positions throughout BSO. Today, BSO has more women with the rank of sergeant and captain than under any previous administration. Consider the sergeant in charge of our aviation unit. As a pilot, she assists in finding wanted suspects from the air and saves lives by transporting injured patients safely to the hospital. Additionally, women also hold significant positions in Law Enforcement, Detention, Fire Rescue, Community Services, Regional Communications, Administration and every other corner of BSO. In a traditionally male-dominated field, it may surprise some that women make up 41 percent of BSO’s work force. In 2014, we added 148 women to our workforce and promoted 187 other women because they were the best candidates. Twenty-one percent of our sworn deputies are women, which is well above the national average of 12.7 percent. These positive changes came over time through real cultural change in the agency. Everyone now understands that – black, white, Hispanic, male, female, gay, straight, Christian, Jew and Muslim – opportunities for advancement in BSO are open to all with the skill, leadership and drive to succeed. One of the principle cornerstones of all police work is strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the community. The National Center for Women and Policing documents how female officers respond in emergency situations in a unique way that is crucial in building trust between police and the communities they serve. Overall, women officers rely more on communication to defuse potentially violent situations. BSO’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) deputies utilize this strategy when assessing situations involving individuals with mental illness. We encourage this style of smart policing agencywide, which grants mutual respect between deputies and our community. Finally, as 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we remember our agency’s many historic achievements. We extend our thanks and gratitude to all the women of BSO – past and present – that helped make BSO the great public service agency it is today. I am deeply honored to work with these women. They have brought significant contributions to public safety and our community is a better place because of them. Our women are making history! For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

focused solely on cultivating internal energy and others focused on transforming the average person into the ultimate athlete - all in the process of striving for “Moksha” or the liberation of self. Martial Krama Yoga training compromises everything from Krama Yoga, Cross Training, Heavy Punching Bag Drills, Shadow Boxing, Partner Striking Excersizes, Qi Gong, and Body Conditioning all in one practice.

Moms and daughters can attend the yoga class, while fathers and their kids attend the Martial Krama Yoga classes or just sit and relax in our comfortable lobby.
Do you offer a free month of yoga classes?
Yes. Most yoga studios offer one free class. It is very difficult, however, to get a true sense or feeling for what yoga is in just one class. We want everyone interested in yoga, whether they are a beginner or already enjoying and practicing yoga, to get acquainted with our studio and staff. Take advantage of our one free month of unlimited yoga and you will see why our slogan is Healthy Body, Quiet Mind. You can attend any of our classes at any of the times they are scheduled, so you can find the type of yoga that fits you best.
Are there costs involved? No. During the free
