Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 3/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

17th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/Cooper City Helps Fight Cancer COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
his year 1.5 million people will hear the dreaded words, “You have cancer.” On March 25, thousands of people who have been touched by cancer will gather on the track at Cooper City High School for the 17th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/ Cooper City. The 16-hour overnight event, for ages 3 to 93, will last all night, because cancer never sleeps. “Cancer touches everyone, either directly or indirectly,” said Cooper City Commissioner James Curran, event chair. “WE have had enough. We need to fund the cure for this horrible disease, so OUR children and grandchildren won’t have to worry about it. All monies raised stay in our community to help those that are currently battling the disease.” Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have
fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Forty-five teams participated in last year’s event and raised over $169,000, surpassing the goal of $125,000. The top three teams were: Pretty in Pink ($22,654), Wellnext ($20,397) and Optimist Club of Cooper City ($18,791). The Davie/Cooper City event won the Nationwide Relay For Life Heart of Relay Award for its youth engagement, with 80% of its fundraising came from youth teams. This year, organizers are hoping to have approximately 50 teams and raise over $180,000. Teams have already held fundraising events, including lemonade stands, garage sales, pancake breakfasts, mini golf tournaments, pizza nights, t-shirt sales and more.
WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IMPACT GLASS CAN BITE YOU IN THE END.
Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. The overnight event will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Opening Ceremony and Survivors Lap (4pm) and Luminaria Ceremony (9pm), when candles are lit in honor and memory of locals who have battled cancer. The event will also feature live entertainment, including youth bands, dancers, cross-dressing pageants, and celebrity and sports personalities. Interfaith services will take place throughout the night. All of the teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites in this year’s “Lights, Camera & Action Against Cancer” theme. There will be a caregivers celebration on March 24, at 7pm, at Cooper City High School, 9401 Stirling Road in Davie. To sign up a team, visit relayforlife.org/ daviecoopercityfl.

Broward County Event Reminds Residents That Water Matters BY DEBBY TEICH
W
hether you use water for drinking, swimming, fishing or irrigation, it is a vital part of your everyday life. Many take it for granted, thinking that we could never run out of it. However, it is actually our most precious resource. On March 11, from 9am to 3pm, the Town of Southwest Ranches will join many other municipalities in Broward County for the 15th Annual Water Matters Day at Tree Tops Park in Davie. Water Matters Day is Broward County’s signature water conservation event. It helps Broward residents make the connection between their daily activities and the impact they have on our local water resources and natural environment. It is an opportunity for them to learn about local and regional water resources; how water is managed and protected; and how Broward County is planning for future water needs. The fun, activity-filled event is for everyone - from adults to children, experts to laypeople. It includes exhibits and booths, face painting, crafts, bounce house, rain barrel workshops, giveaways/raffles, music, a Food Truck Invasion and more. The focus is on yard maintenance and watering, surface water pollution and drainage — areas that are frequently overlooked, but where individual residents can influence great change. The workshops provide in-depth information and an opportunity for learning in small groups where questions can be answered personally. One of the most popular sessions each year is on how to create a NatureScape. While parents are learning how to choose the right plants for their yards, their children can participate in various activities, such as planting flowers to take home. They can also enjoy local musical entertainment, or help their parents collect giveaways, which in the past have included rain gauges, automatic shut-off devices for irrigation systems, native trees and plants, and garden mulch. The Town of Southwest Ranches has participated in the event since it started. This year, the Town’s booth will highlight the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitat Program. Using borrowed plants from local nurseries, Southwest Ranches volunteers will set up a temporary display to show people how

to certify their yards. They will also discuss alternative ways to garden in order to attract birds, mammals, insects, and other wildlife that is native to the area. “Our demonstration garden is becoming a popular feature of this event and we are excited to be able to present it again this year,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “Our design varies from year to year, but it’s all set up to provide a living illustration of ways people can support wildlife with a beautiful and sustainable landscape. This event continues to grow in attendance and support each year, and Southwest Ranches is proud of our County’s commitment to bringing a quality environmental education event to our citizens. We are equally proud that we have been able to be there as a sponsor from the very beginning.” Tree Tops Park is located at 3900 S.W. 100th Ave. in Davie. Admission to Water Matters Day is free. he General Federation of Women’s Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women’s clubs with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. It has 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries. The West Broward club meets at the Pine Island Community Center in Davie, on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, from 7pm to 9pm. “We are 18 women from Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding areas,” said Marie Ambrosino, who was one of the initial members of the West Broward club. “We have common bonds of friendship, community service and a desire to help make a difference in our world.” The West Broward club was established in 1990. Through the federated community of woman’s service clubs, members can exchange ideas and build lifelong friendships with like-minded people. They can also take advantage of the resources and activities available at the club, district, state and international levels to make serving the community both rewarding and fun. Membership is open to all women in the West Broward area. Although the club is small, all 18 members are very active in the club.
The club supports GFWC’s projects at the state and national level, such as domestic violence, Human Trafficking and Heifter International, but most of its efforts are in the Davie area. Last year, the club gave four $250 scholarships to graduating seniors from Flanagan High School, Nova High School and Cooper City High School. The club plans to award scholarships again this year. Members also volunteer for a variety of Davie events, such as the Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo; Spring Festival, Egg Hunt & International MultiEthnic Festival; Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo, Town of Davie Green Fair and Holiday Craft Show, and more. They support the Wildlife Care Center in Ft. Lauderdale. They also adopted a dolphin and manatee at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon Key. Every year, they take a field trip to visit the dolphin and have some fun. Annual dues are $45. For information on the club, call 954-8290551 or send an email to maa101@aol.com. Town of Davie Accepting Nominations for “Greening Your Scene” Awards SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
O
ur global future depends on sustainability, which includes taking advantage of renewable resources and reducing consumption of non-renewable resources. As part of the Town of Davie’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of our community’s resources and environment, it is offering “Greening Your Scene” awards to help honor individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations that are promoting sustainability. Nominations will be accepted through April 5. From the preservation of the Town’s rural heritage to raising awareness about climate change, the Town of Davie has been encouraging residents support sustainability. In 2007, the Town formally adopted a resolution outlining its commitment to sustainability and began the development of a Sustainability Action Plan. In 2011, the Town received a Silver designation from the Florida Green Building Coalition. For the “Greening Your Scene” award, residents are asked to nominate a neighbor, business, non-profit organization or themselves for implementing sustainable strategies and initiatives in their neighborhood, home, or business throughout the Town of Davie. Areas for consideration include: Green Building Design, Renewable Energy or Energy Efficiency, Solid Waste Reduction/Composting/ Recycling, Transportation Options, Water Quality and Conservation, Climate
Change, Sustainable Landscaping, Provision of Green Products or Services, Local Food Systems, Environmental Preservation, Pollution Prevention and or Reduction, Natural Resource Restoration, Invasive Plants Control, Cleanup and Beautification, Education and Awareness, Volunteer Work, or any related sustainability efforts. Harold Jaffe plans to nominate himself in the Transportation Options category. He now rides his bike to work instead of driving. “I ride my bike to work every day,” said Jaffe. “I get exercise and fresh air. I am also saving lots of money. Most importantly, I am doing my part to help save the planet.” Mary Brickell plans to apply in the Local Food Systems category. She and her children planted a large garden in her backyard with fresh vegetables. “Every night I pick fresh vegetables to use for my dinner,” said Brickell. “They are free of insecticides and make everything taste delicious. My children love to watch the vegetables grow.” Send completed nomination forms to Lise Bazinet at lbazinet@ davie-fl.gov or drop them off in person to the Planning and Zoning Office, 6591 Orange Drive. For information, visit www. davie-fl.gov.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Importance of Colon Cancer Screening Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. But how much do you really know about colon cancer? Colon Brenda Jimenez, MD cancer is one of few diseases where benign tissue – in this case, polyps – actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Therefore, preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think.
Prevention and Detection
You can help avoid colon cancer just by getting screened. “If we detect precancerous polyps during a colonoscopy, we can remove them at the same time, before they turn into cancer,” says Brenda Jimenez, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist. That’s one reason colon cancer is so preventable. “It takes approximately 10 years for a small colon polyp to become cancerous,” she adds.
Other tests for colon cancer include sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test and CT colonoscopy. However, if they show any abnormality, a colonoscopy is needed.
Who is at risk of colon cancer? Everyone is at risk of developing colon cancer. Over 75% of patients who are diagnosed have had no identifiable risk factors. People at increased risk include those with a strong family history of the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis. These patients are at moderate to high risk. The risk is particularly strong if the first degree relative with cancer was less than age 60. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. Other common risk factors are; age, obesity, physical inactivity, diet, alcohol and tobacco use.
Symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or anemia. Patients with symptoms should have an examination of the whole colon called colonoscopy. People with no symptoms should be screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.
Are there symptoms?
According to the American Cancer Society, colon polyps often don’t cause any symptoms, particularly in the early stages. That’s why screening is so important. You may have polyps and not know it. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings for everyone age 50 and older, age 45 or older if AfricanAmerican. Your doctor may recommend earlier screenings if you have a family history or other high risk of colon polyps or cancer. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Jimenez, call 866.303.8464 or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.
Take a free colon cancer risk assessment online. Screening for colon cancer can save lives, but only if people get tested. Find out your risk for developing colon cancer by taking our free online risk assessment at clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.

Many of them return year after year. “Father-son relationships are extremely important to a child’s development,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “We believe this event provides a positive environment full of fun and entertaining activities to cultivate their bond.” Approximately 100 fathers and sons attended the night of adventure, which included dinner, games, activities, and fun. They rotated around to different activities geared around this year’s “camping” theme. There was a camp fire, guitar
playing, marshmallow roasting, Wii Fishing, archery and other camping-related activities. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. All of the events are limited to Cooper City residents and require reservations. On April 19, tickets will go on sale for the MotherDaughter Tea, which will be held on May 13. Other events include Mom-Son Night of Fun (September), Grandparent’s Day (September) and Daddy Daughter Dance (November). “Our events provide an outlet for our residents to bond with their family and spend quality time together in an entertaining atmosphere free of today’s technology distractions,” said Trainor. Broward College Students Bridge Gap Between Police & Community on MLK Day BY DEBBY TEICH

r. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. On January 16, Martin Luther King Day, Broward College gave back to the community by partnering with the 2017 MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to support volunteer projects honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for a national day of service. For one of the projects, students on the Broward College Central Campus in Davie participated in Community of Police and Students (C.O.P.S.), a project designed to bridge the gap between the police and the community. The project provided an opportunity for increasing trust among students in the community, police academic cadets and instructors, as well as police officers while engaging in service and collaboration in large and small group learning and service settings. Approximately 100 students were split into small groups to help examine and understand the use of force by the police. With funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College and the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board awarded $112,000 to 36 community organizations hosting volunteer projects in Broward County on MLK Day. registered for a project through the Broward College MLK Day of Service - including 120 Broward College students, 84 Broward College faculty/staff and 962 community volunteers. The awards were given to various community groups to develop service projects that positively impact the local area and address support for neighborhood projects, education, veterans, environment, economic development, health and more. Some of the participating organizations included YMCA of South Florida, Kids In Distress, HANDY, Impact Broward, Junior Achievement, LEAD Nation, The Links Foundation, Zeta DOVE Foundation and Broward County Alumnae of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. “Broward College is thrilled to partner with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with community improvement projects,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “Volunteerism is something we strongly encourage at Broward College, and these notable projects offer the opportunity for sustained service and ongoing community involvement throughout all of Broward County.”

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Intimate Wellness Is Now an Affordable Option for Women BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
V
aginal health has always been somewhat of a sensitive topic for women. Many of them see vaginal atrophy, discoloration, dryness and the inability to enjoy sex as an inevitable part of life due to the aging process or childbirth. But with the advent of technology, that is no longer the case. Fortunately, more and more women are now looking for options to deal with uncomfortable vaginal changes. After all, as life expectancy continues to increase so does the desire for a longer, healthier and more enjoyable sex life. The good news is that vaginal rejuvenation no longer requires an expensive surgery or months of hormone replacement treatments. The CO2RE® Intima laser treatment offers another non-surgical option for women to treat vaginal discomfort with fantastic cosmetic and medical benefits. Studies have shown patient satisfaction of more than 90% with little or no discomfort. The CO2RE® laser system is already popular and extremely effective in aesthetic rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction. Practitioners who are currently using the laser for intimate wellness purposes, including our own functional medical practice, have seen impressive results. The CO2 laser works internally, delivering the laser energy to the vaginal wall in a 360-degree manner, stimulating a healing response that enhances moisture levels in the vaginal canal and results in the remodeling of the vaginal tissue fibers, thereby restoring their flexibility and shape. Externally, the laser energy remodels the labial and vulvar tissue fibers, restoring flexibility and shape. The treatment can also address dyschromia and skin pigmentation resulting in improved texture and tone. In menopausal women with vaginal atrophy caused by reduced levels of estrogen, this treatment has been successful in restoring vaginal function, allowing women to enjoy sex again. In addition, these women experience improved bladder function and more natural secretions, which helps reduce irritation and dryness. CO2 laser has also improved the quality of life of breast cancer patients who have experienced vaginal atrophy after chemotherapy. Because it stimulates collagen renewal and increases the thickness of the vaginal walls providing better support to the mid urethra underside, the laser is also a tool for treating urinary stress incontinence (USI). In addition to the medical benefits for older women, patients in their 20s and 30s are also taking advantage of the CO2 laser in treating post-partum vaginal looseness or simply because they want to enjoy better tightness. The treatment is second to none because it is safe, effective, non-invasive, affordable and there is virtually no pain or down time associated with it. One session takes only minutes to perform but three sessions are recommended for best results. As with any medical procedure, it is important to work with a qualified practitioner who can explain your options and provide quality services with top-tier technology. At Bellissimo Medical, we can certainly help restore not only your vaginal health but your confidence as well. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-3848989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Homeschool Students Teach 4H Lesson at the Public School BY DEBBY TEICH

ational Youth Science Day is one of the many ways that 4-H teaches youth across the nation how to respond to challenges in their communities and the world. Members of the Sunshine Gators 4H club, a homeschool group of 12 children from 3rd-12th grade, joined with 15 other homeschool 4H members to volunteer at Orange Brook Elementary for this year’s activity: Drone Discovery. The homeschool students worked with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on several hands-on activities that incorporated physics, math and other science concepts. After discussing programming and coding, they developed codes to program and navigate a drone on a grid. After learning about rotary props, they used a foam drone with an attached camera to target specific locations and then used the com-

puter to view what the drone saw. They also learned about SeaPerch, a national underwater robotics program that is the focus of this year’s Footprints 4H club. “Many children learn best by completing hands on activities,” said Jackie Matzirakis, parent Volunteer. “The 4-H National Youth Science Day activity is a great way to present material that can be abstract or complex and really break it down to a visual, concrete level.” Matzirakis’s two children, Annaleisa, 12, and Nicolas, 14, volunteered at the school. “I enjoyed helping the kids understand and work through their project,” said Nicolas. “It was nice seeing them really take an interest in the task and put forth all their effort to work through the challenges.” “It was interesting to see how the little kids cooperated and worked together,” said Annaleisa. “It was great to witness the excitement and pleasure on the children’s faces as they participated in the activity.” The mission of 4-H is to empower youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults. The four Hs in 4-H are: Head (managing, thinking), Heart (relating, caring), Hands (giving, working), and Health (being, living). 4H is expanding from its agricultural roots and offers many areas to study, especially focusing on the recent need for STEM interest and development in our communities and schools. It is also focused on community service and helping others.

A Children’s Carousel is Weston’s Premier Early Childhood Learning Center BY STACEY BOMSER
F
or more than 20 years, A Children’s Carousel has been providing a premier early childhood education to children in Weston and surrounding communities. A continual Gold Seal Award winner and recipient of much community recognition, including several Best of Weston awards, the preschool caters to families seeking a superior learning experience for their young children. Executive Director Anne Fischer shares more about what makes A Children’s Carousel unique.
What is A Children’s Carousel? Our preschool provides a develop-
mentally appropriate theme-based program that focuses on each child’s individual learning style. With programs for children aged 18-months through pre-kindergarten, our curriculum provides students with handson experience in math, science, language, phonics, music, art, and more.
What does the school do to promote social development? Our
students are encouraged to socialize in a positive manner using problem solving, listening, verbal and group skills. To help promote positive peer interaction during outdoor play, A Children’s Carousel offers an organic vegetable garden and a permanent outdoor “Music Garden” featuring tuned musical instruments built to stand up to the weather and designed for durability.
What is special about your teaching staff? A Children’s Carousel is
staffed with degree certified and experienced teachers, trained in the most progressive methods of early childhood instruction. Many of our teachers have been with us for more than ten years. Their tenure is a testament to their dedication to the education of the children.
What are some of the special features of the school? Our Carousel City provides children with a variety of opportunities to experience different community-related activities in the Pet Store, Café, Food Market,

Theatre, Construction Site, and more. They love dressing up, performing, and creative play. We also have Meet the Masters (art) and Meet the Composers (music) programs.
What distinguishes A Children’s Carousel from other preschool programs? We set high standards for the children, as 95% of our Pre-K graduates can read, write and tie their shoelaces. We have the top VPK scores in Broward County.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know? A Children’s Carousel offers a variety of schedules to help accommodate every student and parent, as well as a summer camp. It has been a privilege to serve the Weston community for the past two decades, and we look forward to many years to come. We invite you to come tour our school. When to File a Paternity Action
O
ne of the areas of law which my firm handles is paternity. When a child is born to parents who are not married, a Paternity issue arises. A Paternity lawsuit can be brought by either the mother or the father of the child. The purpose of the lawsuit is usually to establish the rights of the parents and establish a child support obligation. Most people, however, do not have knowledge of the laws in this state concerning unwed parents who have a child. When they come in for a consultation they are usually quite surprised as to the state of the law. In Florida, if the parents are not married there is no presumption as to who the father is. The purpose of filing a paternity action is to establish who the father is and, as such, determine the respective rights and responsibilities of the parties. Florida Statutes state: “Any woman who is pregnant or has a child, any man who has reason to believe he is the father of a child, or any child may bring proceedings in the circuit court, in chancery, to determine the paternity of the child when paternity has not been established by law or otherwise.” As stated above, a mother can file a paternity action against the father of the child or a father can file one against the mother. If either party denies the paternity, a DNA test will be ordered to determine who the father is. Once paternity is established, the father has all of the rights and responsibilities of any father would have, which would include child support and time sharing. If the parties maintain their relationship, the issue of paternity rarely is a concern. It is only when the parties have conflict that the lack of an order of paternity can complicate matters. As an example, consider a non-married couple who were never married and had a child together. There is no issue as to who the father is. The couple is not living together, but has followed a time sharing schedule which is satisfactory to both parties. In addition, the father has been financially supporting the child. Since the issue of paternity has never been an issue in their lives, a court order was never sought. What might happen if the party’s relationship deteriorates? What if the mother suddenly denies the same time sharing to the father? What if the father suddenly stops contributing financial support for the child? These are the issues that I often see in my office. What can be done? Unfortunately, until such time as paternity is established by law the father will not have the ability to file a motion to enforce his time sharing, because there is no presumption that he is the father. On the other hand, the mother will not be able to immediately pursue her child support for the same reason. Establishing paternity early on will eliminate these potential problems. It is only when the parents wait until a crisis occurs that problems arise.

What does this mean to you? With the national job situation improving, and mortgage interest rates projected to rise later in the year, buyers are not waiting until the spring; they are out looking for a home right now. If you are looking to sell this year, waiting until the spring to list your home means you will have the greatest competition for a buyer. It may make sense to beat the rush of housing inventory that will enter the market in the spring and list your home today.*

M
y clients are always asking me when the best time is to put their home up for sale. It is common knowledge that a large number of homes sell during the spring-buying season. For that reason, many homeowners hold off on putting their homes on the market until then. The question is whether or not that will be a good strategy this year. The other listings that do come out in the spring will represent increased competition to any seller. Do a greater number of homes actually come to the market in the spring, as compared to the rest of the year? The National Association of Realtors (NAR) recently revealed the months in which most people listed their homes for sale in 2016. The three months in the second quarter of the year – April, May, June - are consistently the most popular months for sellers to list their homes on the market. Last year, the number of homes available for sale in January was 1,820,000. Nationally, that number spiked to 2,140,000 by May!

Rocky’s Roofing
Just a Baby Tooth BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
ASK THE EXPERT
Y
ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words “your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird and Monsters Inc.), the toothpaste is bubble gum flavored, there are three hundred dinosaur floss handles in the drawer, a water irrigation system, and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care. After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar, which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option, unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you. It is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth, aka “baby” teeth, have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits which will reward them into their adulthood.

Legislators: Do Your Job and Pass Common Sense Gun Legislation Now BY SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL
H
ow many more innocent lives must perish before our legislators pass meaningful and common sense gun legislation? How many more tragic attacks like those at Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport, Sandy Hook Elementary and the Pulse nightclub need to occur before rational thought prevails? Broward mourns five more lives lost in a tragic mass shooting – especially as this one occurred in our own backyard. It should be clear to everyone that dangerous individuals like alleged airport shooter Esteban Santiago, who clearly demonstrated signs of mental illness, should never have been allowed to own a gun. In fact, any person suffering from certain disqualifying mental illness should not be able to buy, possess or carry any type of firearm – period. The same applies to convicted felons and individuals who are on the federal government’s terrorist “no-fly” list. We shouldn’t be allowing people in these narrow categories to buy or carry firearms. The statistics are telling. In just the last 12 months alone, 76 innocent victims died and scores more were injured due to U.S. mass shootings. Yet unbelievably, some argue arming more individuals is the solution. That goes for some legislators in Tallahassee, who appear more concerned about passing laws written by the gun lobbyists that would allow guns into classrooms and government meetings. That dangerous line of thinking will only lead to further violence and bloodshed. As Sheriff of one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country, I understand public safety better than gun industry lobbyists and those elected officials who help advance their agenda. I can say with certainty that more guns are not the answer. Imagine the chaos if everyone at the airport was armed with a firearm. Countless individuals would certainly have been caught in the wild crossfire and hit by stray bullets. One study which examined New York’s annual firearms discharge reports showed police officers hit their targets 34 percent of the time. The hit ratio was even lower at other agencies. If law enforcement officers who carry guns daily and regularly train are successful at hitting their targets at that rate, it is clear that ordinary citizens would be significantly less accurate. It would also make the job of law enforcement far more difficult and divert them from the real threat. In such a stressful and chaotic situation, with shots being fired in all directions, how could we expect law enforcement to recognize the good guys from the bad ones? The men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, local and federal law enforcement agencies and first responders did a phenomenal job rushing into a dangerous and chaotic situation. These heroes put their lives at risk to protect residents and visitors alike. We shouldn’t make it even more dangerous for them. Let me be clear: gun control isn’t about restricting freedom or taking firearms legally obtained by law-abiding citizens. Instead, it is about common sense laws that help identify people with a history of criminal convictions, violence, certain high-risk mental illnesses or are on the FBI’s terrorist watch list. For years, I have been on the forefront in demanding common sense gun legislation, including closing the gun show loophole, reinstating the assault weapons ban and fighting against open carry laws. It’s time our elected officials in Tallahassee and Washington finally do the same and tackle this life-threatening issue once and for all. For information, visit sheriff.org.

e love our rodeo arena in Davie and the historical roots of our agricultural community. Hopefully, you have noticed beautification efforts and upgrades at the arena. The new black, vinyl fencing softens the old look of the metal fencing with barbed wire. The electrical upgrades will allow for the Town to accommodate more vendors, handle the electrical demands of existing and future programming, such as concerts, and accommodate an L.E.D. information/promotion display to be installed on site. The rodeo arena has long been a cornerstone of our community and will continue to be as we search for ways to enhance it to keep pace with the development along the corridor and become more competitive in attracting larger shows, concerts, and competitions. Although there is heavy activity in east Davie, significant infrastructure investments are occurring throughout the Town. For my neighbors out west in the Shenandoah area, the park enhancement project continues to move along and the much anticipated Fire Station 86 should finally be completed and come online toward the end of the year. The fire station at Shenandoah Park will expand our fire protection capabilities and improve response times. The Davie Farm Park, a project near and dear to my heart, moves closer to becoming a reality. The Farm Park will include numerous amenities making
