Preventive dental care
is important throughout your life, no matter your age. Keep your smile healthy by practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities:
• Brush your teeth at least twice a day • Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. • Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. • Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If it’s been six months since your last dental checkup, then it’s time to
contact our practice and schedule your next appointment!

Spring is finally here!
T
his Florida ‘winter’ season certainly featured a variety of weather conditions. We had a number of cooler days and even colder nights followed by warm and wet weather. As we enter April, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. Time to think about what to do during the approaching summer months. Many of us are busy planning where to go and what to do for summer vacation. Like my family, many have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to reconnect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains, and travel abroad. Summer time is also time for camp activities and summer school. We are blessed with a variety of different camps from which to choose, including language camps, sports camps, music camps, arts & craft camps, and much more. There are a multitude of different kids’ activities and camps advertised in this issue. In addition, keep an eye out for our annual Summer Camp Guide, which will be featured in our May issue. There is something for everybody. Whatever you decide to do this spring and summer, just don’t forget to take along a copy of the ‘Our City Magazine’ to send us your picture.

Davie Residents to Participate in 20th Annual Waterway Clean-Up Community News
By Debby Teich
T
he message is clear. Davie residents are proud of their community and they want to make sure that it is litter-free. On April 16, several hundred residents are expected to participate in the Town of Davie and Central Broward Water Control District’s 20th Annual Waterway Clean-up and Trash Splash, a public awareness campaign to keep the waterways clean. All individuals or groups must register by April 13. The effort started with a group of volunteers gathering on a Saturday and has grown into a major event involving school clubs, boy and girl scouts, religious and non-profit organizations, local families and individuals. Organizers are looking for groups, families, or individual residents to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. They also need residents with small boats to clean the canal waters. Check-in for the event begins at 8am at Davie Town Hall and the clean-up will last from 9 to 11:30am. Each of the volunteers will be assigned to a small area along the C-11 Canal, between State Road 7 and Flamingo Road. Participants
should wear clothes that can get wet and dirty, as well as work gloves and shoes. In return for their efforts, participants will receive a free t-shirt or hat, as well as service hours. They will also get a ticket to attend the “Trash Splash” pool party, which will be held after the cleanup Participants at last year’s event at the Pine Island Park Pool. There will be free hot dogs and other free refreshments, as well as a D.J. spinning tunes all afternoon. Bring your swim suit. Everyone who cleans is invited to attend. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators and air conditioners. Each year, however, they find fewer large items and less trash. Barbara Hollow plans to participate in the clean-up with her two children. “I am so proud of my Town and I want to make sure that it stays clean,” said Hollow. Davie Town Hall is located at 6591 Orange Drive. Pine Island Park Pool is located at 3800 SW 92nd Avenue, in Davie. Preregistration is required. For information and an application, visit www.davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1153 or 954-797-1166.

uring the Orange Blossom Festival, volunteers for the Old Davie School Historical Museum gave visitors a taste of what life was like in the early 1900’s. Wearing pioneer attire, they took visitors on a tour of a reconstructed 1909 one-room pioneer house, so they could see how Florida pioneers lived before electricity and indoor plumbing. Visitors also
sampled food cooked over the fire, such as pineapple upside down cake, coffee, green beans and soup. Volunteers also took visitors on a free guided tour of the Old Davie School Historical Museum, which tells the story of how the community of Davie grew from the reclaimed land of the Everglades into the booming town it is today. They also explored a replica
of a 1920’s classroom and searched through hidden treasures at the indoor flea market. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road on the south side of Griffin Road. For information, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

ebbie Zelman was 40 years old in April 2008, when she learned she had stage IV stomach cancer that was inoperable and incurable, and that her chances of being alive in five years were less than 5%. Since then, she has turned her personal challenge into a positive force to create a better future for people diagnosed with stomach cancer. Two of her children, Zachary and Rachel Guttman, have vowed to do the same. The high school seniors and twins have been volunteering with Debbie’s Dream Foundation (DDF), since their mother started the organization in 2009. “When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, she didn’t play the victim,” said Rachel. “Instead, she created a worldwide foundation to kick cancers butt. She inspires me to do great things with my life.” “My mother inspires me by being strong and fearless in the face of such a horrible disease,” said Zachary. “Her willpower to fight the disease inspired me to do the same.” The siblings have carved their own path within the organization. They started the first DDF school club at NSU University School when they entered sixth grade. Three years later, they started another DDF school club in their high school. The club has approximately 60 members that raise money and awareness for stomach cancer by holding a variety of events. Members also help the foundation with the patient resource education program by putting together
packets for patients, making cards for stomach cancer patients and their families, and holding toy drives for the children of the patients with stomach cancer. Rachel and Zachary have encouraged others to start clubs. Due to their efforts, there are now nine DDF school clubs across the country with more in the works. To help the new clubs, they created the DDF Youth Leadership Council (YLC), which oversees all of the DDF school clubs and also cultivates new clubs. Rachel and Zachary serve as YLC copresidents. Both are also still active in the DDF high school club, with Rachel serving as president and Zachary as treasurer. “It is extremely important to start clubs,” said Rachel. “Not only do they raise funds for the causes they support, but they also raise awareness.” “We started the clubs to spread awareness and inspire more people to join the fight against stomach cancer,” said Zachary. “They are also a way that we can make a difference for our mom and for others in her situation.” In the fall, Rachel will be attending college to study medicine and business and Zachary will be attending Washington University in St. Louis to study finance and engineering. Both plan to start clubs at their respective universities.

ETC Dinner Show and Auction Raises Over $20,000
Community News

A
t the 13th Annual Exceptional Theater Company (ETC) Benefit Dinner Show and Auction, actors of varying abilities raised $20,832.18 through their performance of “Hooray for Hollywood” at Archbishop McCarthy High School. The ETC actors range in age from 7-22. They attended classes at a variety of locations throughout Broward County to prepare for the dinner show. Assisted by volunteers who served as shadows, the actors learned their parts. On the night of the show, the shadows assisted the actors by calling lines to them or pushing their wheelchair in a dance performance. The sold out event showcased five musical revues, complete with costumes and props. It included the following performances and acting groups: ▸▸ Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places - Monday night class at Archbishop McCarthy High School ▸▸ Jump in the Line (Shake Senora) - Tuesday class at the Lucanus Developmental Center ▸▸ Footloose Mix - Tuesday night class at the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center ▸▸ Banana Boat and Ghostbusters - Monday night class at the
Driftwood Community Center ▸▸ Stand by Me and What a Feeling Tuesday night class at the Lucanus Developmental Center. ▸▸ I Had the Time of My Life - The Grand Finale was performed by all ETC actors in the show. “The Finale was simply amazing,” said Debra Lombard, Executive Director of the Exceptional Theater Company. “The audience got up and began dancing with our ETC actors. It was the ultimate dance party.” Gregg Goldstein, longtime ETC volunteer, emceed the evening and auction. This year’s Jason Meyers Exceptional Theater Company Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Andre Levy and Laura Rivera for their dedication to the arts. Andre, dressed as John Travolta, thanked his parents and Laura, who paints with her right foot, expressed her happiness in ways that brought cheers from the audience. ETC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that offers drama class designed to teach theatre to persons with physical and intellectual challenges. For information, visit www. etcsouthflorida.org.
Davie/Cooper City Participate in Neighborhood Water Challenge By Debby Teich
W
e all need fresh, clean water to live. Making small adjustments on using this limited resource can have a big impact. The Town of Davie and the City of Cooper City have joined the Broward’s Water Partnership’s Neighborhood Water Challenge. Participants can save water and money, while having fun. They might even win a $1,000 prize. The contest is sponsored by Broward Water Partnership, WateReuse Florida and WaterOptimizer. Neighbors can participate by saving the most water in their neighborhoods or creating the most outstanding and creative water conservation outreach program. First place winners in each category will receive $1,000 cash. The second place prize is a state-of-the-art water-conserving irrigation system. ▸▸ Water Conservation Competition: Teams of neighbors (2-5) work together to save water over a two-month period. Water savings will be determined by comparing 2015 water bills to 2016 water bills. An average savings for each team will be calculated. The team that saves the most wins. Broward Water Partnership will offer support and feedback throughout the competition on different ways that teams can save water. Updates on each team’s progress will be required throughout the competition. The contest begins at 12am on April 1 and ends at 11:59pm on May 31. ▸▸ Outreach and Education Challenge: This contest is to see who can create the best outreach effort. You don’t have to form a team for this contest. If you do, you’ll get extra points. Selection criteria includes: creativity, outreach message, savings and explanation of results and implementation. Results are due on May 31.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Gut Health Is Linked to Stress, Anxiety & Depression By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
M
ost people are now aware that diets high in sugar, simple carbohydrates and unhealthy fats are detrimental to their health. In spite of that, a large percentage of Americans are still making poor nutritional choices with an alarming third of the population being classified as obese by the Centers for Disease Control. But, did you know that what happens in your gut is directly linked to what happens in your brain? Researchers from Oregon State University found diets high in fat and sugar changed the composition of gut bacteria, which was linked to a significant loss of cognitive flexibility--the ability to adapt to change. In this study, male mice consuming high fat or high sugar diets showed a decline in cognitive functions when compared to mice consuming a regular diet. The mice were subject to several tests of mental and physical function, and the most damaging effects were observed in the animals consuming the high sugar diet. The study is consistent with other findings that have linked the Western diet to diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Another study at UCLA found that fruit flies developed a leaky gut a few days before they die. Flies that were treated with medication for prevention of leaky gut lived longer. Even U.S Army researches have turned to gut bacteria research in hopes of introducing meals that will help soldiers overcome the stress of having to change diets rapidly, thus avoiding gastrointestinal issues. In the last decade, scientists have paid close attention to the gut/brain connection, realizing that bacteria regulate important brain functions. Stress, anxiety and depression have all been linked to gut health. The collective genetic material of all your microbes is known as microbiome, a mixture of more than 100 trillion microorganisms that can affect a wide range of biological functions. We carry three pounds of it in our gut! Bacteria are the oldest form of life on earth, but there’s the good and the bad. How do you ensure you are putting the right kind of bacteria into your body? Unfortunately, bacteria prescriptions are not an option and pills are not readily available for purchase. The solution to having a healthy gut falls solely on a person’s willingness to make the correct nutritional choices. Food is crucial in keeping our bodies looking good and operating at optimum capacity. But if you don’t know where to start, know that there is help available. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical offers patient advice on how to restore health and balance through proper nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle changes. Patients learn to prevent disease in a natural, wholesome way rather than turning to prescription medications to put a patch on a serious problem. Call today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. p.p.S. Davie United Methodist Church Celebrates 100 Years Community News
By Debby Teich
2016
D
avie United Methodist Church (UMC) in Davie is turning 100, and it has been commemorating its centennial anniversary with a year of celebrations. Founded in 1916, members of the original congregation voted to become connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as the United Methodist Church. “Those who were part of the first church in Davie knew the importance of having a place for worship, as well as a place to experience community,” said Zig Bays, Senior Pastor. “They had great vision knowing when it was time to build another church to meet the needs of the faith community and residents of Davie. These faithful members raised funds and donated property. They gave of their time, talents, and treasures to bring their vision into fruition.” Today, Davie UMC offers Sunday morning worship, Sunday school, a nursery, Sunday Night Youth group and much more for its 275 parishioners. “We who remain today have the same challenge to provide a place where congregants can come together for worship and fellowship,” said Reverend Bays. “We also are commissioned to open our doors, minds, and hearts to others looking for a place to experience God’s amazing love and grace. The congregation and community of Davie are thankful for those individuals who have made the dream
for a community of faith a reality in Davie.” The 100 year celebration, which began in 2015, has included a July 4th picnic, float in the Orange Blossom Parade, Yard & Craft Sales, Health Expo, Pumpkin Patch, Family Fun Night and more. Some of the upcoming activi1916 church building (still standing) ties/events planned include: ▸▸ Community Picnic – On April 17, from 4pm – 6pm, the community is invited to celebrate the church’s 100 years of ministry in Davie at a free picnic. There will be music, food, and fellowship. ▸▸ Gala – On April 23, at 7pm, at the Old Davie School, join the church for a gala. The cost is $15 per person. The meal will be BBQ dinner with all the fixings. The theme is centered around Davie’s heritage. There will be church members, local dignitaries, current and past clergy who have served Davie United Methodist Church over the past 100 years, and friends of the congregation. ▸▸ Celebration Service – On April 24, at 4pm, the community is invited to the 100 Year Celebration Service. It will feature the Chancel Choir, Chancel Bells, recognition of past appointed clergy to Davie United Methodists Church. Taste & Tour Through the Generations at Old Davie School By Debby Teich

t Taste & Tour Through the Generations, the public will have an opportunity to taste recipes from Davie pioneers, as they learn about the history of Davie. Tours will be held every Saturday in April, from 10am – 2pm, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. “We’ve come so far from the days of fresh homemade cooking,” said Leslie Schroeder, Director. “Everything is quick and easy in this fast paced world we live in. This event lets you take a minute to enjoy some delicious food, while visiting an historic landmark!” When the Davie Historical Society started the event fifteen years ago, it was called Generations of Taste and was actually a tasting contest. Volunteers prepared recipes from the Davie Historical Society’s Cookbooks and people sampled them to vote on their favorite dish in each category. Winners received the coveted “Wooden Spoon” and bragging rights for the year. Now called Taste & Tour Through the Generations, the event has transformed into a tasting event, along with a tour through the historic homes on campus. For a small fee, visitors will get to sample a variety of recipes from the four different cookbooks that are currently available for sale in the gift shop. The cookbooks contain favorite recipes from Historical Society members, pioneer families, community members and others. Pioneers and volunteers will be preparing the recipes for sampling. Visitors will also get to tour the Museum in the school-

The building represents a link with the history of 20th century pioneering and early education in Western Broward County. ▸▸ First conceived in 1912, the Viele House is the oldest residential structure remaining in Davie. It survived the hurricane of 1926, the floods of 1947, and an explosion in western Broward County. ▸▸ Walsh-Osterhoudt House was built during the early agricultural development of western Broward County. The main part of the house appears much the same today as it did when it was built. Later additions such as a sun room, kitchen wing and back portion were added throughout the years 2004 to 2008. ▸▸ Pioneer House is a replica of a 1908 Early Settler’s Shack that would have been found along the banks of the C-11 Canal after it was dredged. Admission is $7 (children 12 and under/ seniors) and $10 (adults). The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Rd in Davie. For information, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

This is the 13th year that the golf tournament will benefit the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, which helps nearly 1,000 children each year. Campuses provide a haven for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned, giving them a safe place to heal, be supported and grow into healthy, independent adults. The Children’s Home offers specialized residential care and treatment with nurturing house-parents and therapists who help each child. Additionally, the Home reaches into the community by recruiting, training, licensing and monitoring loving foster care families and adoption services. The proceeds of this year’s New Horizon Golf Classic and Silent Auction will continue to support Children’s Home’s Foster Care services in South Florida, helping to ensure that this program is successful right here in Broward County. For information on the golf tournament, call 954-434-7400 or visit www.newhorizonumc.com/golf.html.

Cooper City Volunteers Participate in Hunger Project Packing Event Community News
By Debby Teich
I
t has been proven that children who have access to healthy food pay better attention in school, and have a better chance at a bright future. According to Feeding South Florida, seven percent of children in the Broward County are food insecure, meaning 82,650 children go to bed hungry. For the third year, Cooper City High School, The City of Cooper City and Feeding Children Everywhere participated in the Cooper City High School Hunger Project to impact the lives of hungry children right in their own backyard. Over 400 Cooper City High School students and faculty, along with members of
Cooper City and local city officials, gathered around 27 assembly lines to hand-package Feeding Children Everywhere’s healthy Lentil Casserole. The meal includes the essential nutrients needed by children for healthy growth and development. It consists of 4 ingredients: lentil, rice, dehydrated vegetables, and pink Himalayan salt. It is all-natural, soy-free, gluten-free, preservativefree, kosher certified, and vegan. In just a few hours, volunteers packaged 76,000 meals for hungry families in Broward County. “It truly was an amazing experience,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Events like these are a great example of how the Cooper City community bands together for a good cause to achieve a common goal.” FCE is a social charity that empowers and mobilizes people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children. The food is provided at no cost to local organizations in the U.S. and in different regions around the world. To date, the FCE team has mobilized 350,000 people and shipped more than 51 million meals worldwide. For information, visit www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com.

Students Share Poetry at Louder Than a Bomb
School News
By Debby Teich
A
ccording to Kevin Coval, co-founder of Louder Than a Bomb, “What young people have to say about the world they inhabit and hope to construct is more useful than any armament, more complex than prison industrial systems, and louder than any bomb.” From April 5-16, students will have an opportunity to share their stories at Louder Than a Bomb Florida 2016 (LTABFLA), a 12-day festival held on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Founded in Chicago in 2001, LTAB is the largest youth poetry festival in the world. Football legend Jason Taylor and his Jason Taylor Foundation brought it to Broward Country last year in an effort to empower and unite South Florida’s youth and community through the art of the spoken word. “We created the bluapple Poetry Network and Louder Than A Bomb Florida so that each of the young people we serve would have a platform to share their stories and establish their voice,” said Jason Taylor. Dubbed the “Super Bowl of poetry,” LTABFLA features a friendly spoken-word competition between school-based poetry teams representing local high schools in the area. It utilizes the art of spoken word to help provide teens from diverse backgrounds with a common vehicle for written and performance-based selfexpression, empowering and uniting both the youth and their respective communities. It inverts the traditional educational paradigm by asking students what THEY think, see and experience in their worlds. Students are validated through the stories they tell and experiences they share. Throughout the year, students have been creating and sharing their stories within their classrooms, in after-school clubs and through various teen open mics throughout South Florida. Many of them participated in the bluapple Poetry Network Poetry and Leadership Conference in February. The culmination is the upcoming 12-day festival, which will feature poetry bouts, workshops, exhibits, and ultimately the crowning of Florida’s top youth poetry team. It also includes a Town Hall meeting, where community stakeholders - students, parents, educators, community activists, etc. – will have meaningful dialogue about important issues that affect the youth and society at large.
Students compete at Louder Than a Bomb Florida 2015
United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse, along with its major funder Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, have partnered with the Jason Taylor Foundation to support LTABFLA. “The partnership provides us with a fantastic forum where we can communicate to the youth in our community the risks of underage drinking and substance use/ abuse, how to avoid peer pressure and how to advocate for healthier communities,” said Maria Hernandez, Vice President of Program Operations at United Way of Broward County. For more information about LTABFLA, visit www.jasontaylorfoundation.com. For more information about UWBCCSA, visit www. drugfreebroward.org.

History Comes Alive at University School’s People Fair By Debby Teich
V
isitors to NSU University School’s Lower School may have thought they saw George Lucas, Michelle Obama, Amelia Earhart and other famous figures roaming the halls. It was all part of the school’s People Fair, which has been held at the school for the past 11 years. “Student learning becomes more meaningful when the learner is able to make connections to new skills or information that is being introduced,” said
Cory DeLaFuente, Ed.D., Associate Director of the Lower School. “The People Fair is a good example of student-driven learning that is facilitated by teachers who help students make life-long connections.” Students were asked to select and research a famous person that inspires them and then become him/her for the day. They could choose to be a leader who has had a major impact on humankind, a wellknown sports figure who has contributed to society, or
a role model they look up to in today’s world. In addition to dressing the part, students had to complete three of six project options to display during the People Fair event. They created iMovies, portraits, artifacts, timelines, Chatterpix, and scripts. During the fair, students in Junior Kindergarten through 5th grade traveled around to the different displays. They scanned QR codes to discover important events in the person’s life and how they have impacted society.

A
s Mayor of the Town of Davie, I created the Davie Public Affairs Academy. The Academy is a program I envisioned to recognize the importance of local government and offer an opportunity for students to shape and influence their community. In applying to this program, students have expressed an interest in government and public affairs. It is the mission of this program to provide them with a comprehensive behind the scenes look at the operations and decision making process in local government. The Town of Davie strives to be the preeminent community in South Florida to live, work, learn, and play. We are committed to creating an environment that is conducive to innovation, creativity, and collaboration. As a retired educator, I believe our students are a part of the future that will carry our local community forward into growth and prosperity. The Academy will provide them with the educational foundation in understanding the impact that local government has on daily life. To receive the maximum benefit of the program, student interns will be assigned to a Department Director and other designated staff. However, their education will not stop there, as they will have the opportunity to gain experience in several Town Departments. The Public Affairs Academy operates on a monthly flexible schedule. Participants are required to complete at least 25 hours of training to receive a “Certificate of Attendance.” However, if they complete 35 hours of training, they receive the programs top recognition, a “Certificate of Completion with Honors.” It also offers an opportunity for inclusion in college applications. This year’s program is in full swing with Davie student residents from three high schools: Western, Nova and College Academy. The Town of Davie and the Florida Department of Health are working to protect, promote, and improve the health of all residents. As such, there are simple ways in which we can protect ourselves from the Zika Virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses: ▸▸ Drain standing water weekly, no matter how seemingly small. ▸▸ Cover your skin with mosquito repellent and protective clothing when enjoying the Florida outdoors To learn more about these protective measures and other steps you can take, please visit the Florida Department of Health webpage, which has information on Mosquito Bite Protection for Overseas Travelers and Mosquito Bite Protection in Florida The Town Council is always seeking ways to enhance the public safety of our community. For the first time in many, many years, a part time mounted police patrol unit will be coming back to the force. The mounted unit proves practical to the Town as we have hundreds of miles in equestrian/recreational trails often inaccessible by traditional vehicles. Our Fire Rescue Department was the recipient of over $2 million dollars in federally funded grants to purchase self-contained breathing apparatus and cover salary and benefit costs for two years of 12 new hire firefighters to meet the needs of our growing community. These firefighters will be critical as the Town prepares to move forward with the construction of Fire Station 86 in Shenandoah. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 954-797-1030 or email me at jpaul@davie-fl.gov.

here are many different conditions that can cause breathing problems. Asthma, emphysema or pneumonia can make you feel short of breath. Stress may make it hard to breathe and heart disease could make you feel breathless. A stuffy nose or hard exercise might make it seem like you’re not getting enough air. But with sleep apnea, you completely stop breathing for seconds or even minutes at a time while you are sleeping.
People with sleep apnea usually don’t know they have the condition because it occurs during sleep. While they may partially awaken as they struggle to breathe, they typically will not be aware of the breathing pauses that can occur five to 30 times or more an hour. These sleep interruptions are due to either obstructive sleep apnea, which is the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax, or central sleep apnea, which happens when the brain doesn’t send the right signals to the muscles that control breathing. People at increased risk for sleep apnea include those who have a neck circumference greater than 17 inches, high blood pressure, a narrowed airway, and a family history of the condition. Other factors that contribute to sleep apnea are prolonged sitting, smoking, using alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers, and being obese, male or older. African Americans, Hispanics, and Pacific Islanders are more likely to have sleep apnea than Caucasians. Those with the disorder may experience excessive sleepiness during the daytime, loud snoring, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headache, problems staying asleep, periods of breathing cessation during sleep, and sudden awakenings with shortness of breath. The diagnosis of sleep apnea can be based on medical and family histories, a physical exam, or results from sleep studies. Long-term management of sleep apnea is necessary because it is a chronic condition that can increase the risk of work-related accidents, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes and heart failure. Treatment will focus on restoring regular breathing during sleep and relieving symptoms through lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, breathing devices or surgery.
“911; What Is Your Emergency?” By Sheriff Scott Israel
Ask the Sheriff
T
Sleep ApneA
“9
11; what is your emergency?” These are words you never want to hear, but for our E-911 call takers they are all too familiar. BSO’s call takers and dispatchers are the first of the first responders, responsible not only for receiving incoming emergency calls, but also for assessing the importance of an emergency and dispatching the appropriate resources and personnel to an incident. In 2015, we handled 2.5 million calls from our community through our three regional E-911 centers. That is almost 7,000 calls that we receive each and every day. During each call, the men and women behind the calm voices on the other end of the phone line are tasked with getting as much pertinent information from the caller as possible, while directing emergency services to a scene that could be dangerous for everyone involved. The call taker is quickly trying to figure out the “who, what, when, where and why” of a situation. They know that the more information our law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency personnel have when they arrive on the scene, the quicker they can assess a situation and take appropriate action. All medical calls are dictated by specific National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols. Every one of our almost 500 call takers is also specially trained to relay these important medical instructions in the critical time when emergency services are on their way. This training is necessary to talk callers through any conceivable emergency, including those requiring CPR, helping the caller recognize the strength and severity of a stroke or seizure, and sometimes even relaying labor and delivery instructions for births. Although these are extraordinary events in a person’s life, they are daily occurrences that our operators handle. Our call takers know that seconds can make the difference between life and death.
Lifestyle changes that can help relieve mild sleep apnea include avoiding alcohol and medications that can cause drowsiness, losing weight if overweight, side sleeping, keeping nasal passages open with nasal sprays or allergy medicines, and not smoking. A mouthpiece, or oral appliance, also may be used to adjust the lower jaw and tongue to help keep the airway open during sleep. The consequences of untreated sleep apnea can range from higher risks of diabetes and heart disease to dangerously sleepy driving. Many people who have trouble sleeping think of sleep as a luxury. However, like exercise and proper nutrition, sleep is critical for good health and overall well-being. The good news — Florida Medical Center’s Sleep Disorders Center offers highly effective treatments for sleep. Sleep quality may affect overall health and well-being, job or academic performance and personal relationships. Our Sleep Disorders Center can help with diagnosis and treatment. With private, comfortable rooms our program is designed to get to the root of a patient’s sleep troubles. Our sleep studies are held on the second floor of the Emergency Center at Davie, 10230 W. State Rd. 84 Davie, FL 33324.
To make an appointment, learn more and get details on a good night’s sleep, please call 954-653-3704 Option 2 or you may email us at: Sunrise.sleep@tenethealth.com.
When I became sheriff, I mandated that our operators receive a specialized Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) course. CIT training was developed to provide a more intelligent, more effective and safer approach to mental health crises. This training gives our operators the tools they need to determine if a call involves a mental health concern and the steps they can take to help defuse the situation. The operator can also determine if one of our many CIT-trained deputies needs to be dispatched to help assist in a more careful, understanding manner. Our mission at BSO is to provide the best possible communications services not only to the deputies, firefighters and paramedics we serve, but also to the residents and visitors who may need us at any hour. Too often, the efforts of emergency call takers and dispatchers are taken for granted, but in many instances, they are the unseen heroes of our agency. In April we honor public safety telecommunicators, and I wanted to highlight these professional and dedicated men and women. They work tirelessly as the critical link between our community and emergency services. For information, visit sheriff.org.

n a Dissolution of Marriage, the couple’s finances are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances, determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. Not everyone, however, is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. Are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support, each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses. Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows: ▸▸ Salary or wages ▸▸ Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments ▸▸ Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts (“Business income” means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income.) ▸▸ Disability benefits ▸▸ All workers’ compensation benefits and settlements ▸▸ Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation ▸▸ Pension, retirement, or annuity payments ▸▸ Social security benefits ▸▸ Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court ▸▸ Interest and dividends ▸▸ Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income ▸▸ Income from royalties, trusts, or estates ▸▸ Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses ▸▸ Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances, for instance, would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is “yes” and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course, if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions than it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. In addition, a person cannot voluntarily reduce his/her income by changing jobs and expect to be able to either reduce or increase a child support or alimony obligation. If someone is “underemployed,” additional income may be imputed by the courts. Of course, sometimes a reduction in income can occur due to circumstances beyond the individual’s control. Once again, if you have any questions I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

L
ast month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the process in deciding upon the need and use of sedation dentistry. This process requires the consideration of many factors, ranging from the child’s dental needs and age to family finances. This month’s article will assume the need and focus mostly on available options. In other words, it will tend to be less emotional and more scientifically driven. The major criteria in choosing a specific sedative agent is the depth of sedation desired. The concept of level of sedation is so important that most professional organizations categorize sedation not by the individual drugs or route of administration, but rather through the level of sedation created. The categorized levels of sedation are the following: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia. The importance of this distinction is that a facility must be adequately staffed and equipped to monitor the level of sedation used. It is important to note that facilities offering different modes of sedation are strictly regulated and go through an annual recertification process. In an effort to simplify the discussion, I will review some sedative medications based on mode of delivery, as this is usually how they are presented in the office setting. Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the only inhalation sedative used in pediatric dentistry. It is used as a “minimal sedative,” mostly for its relief of anxiety. It is mixed in combination with pure oxygen, which assures proper concentration of oxygen to the body. Its excellent safety record, along with versatility of use, makes it the most commonly used sedative agent in pediatric dentistry. The oral sedatives can potentially span all of the levels of sedation. For example, Diazapam (Valium) or Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), when used by themselves, are mostly used as minimal sedatives. However, when used in larger doses, or in combination with other oral sedatives, these agents can cross over into moderate sedation or even deep sedation. There are many factors having to do with their absorption through the digestive system which make them more unpredictable in terms of the degree of sedation as well as duration of effect. For this reason, their use is not usually recommended for extensive treatment plans and is usually titrated from visit to visit. The sedatives delivered intravenously are used for the purpose of deep sedation. The use of these agents can be used for extended treatment times and can usually be reversed if needed by antagonist agents. Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, provides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction. When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work, but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin Rd. and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney
S
ince June 2013, when the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure cases are brought to trial. Previously, it would take anywhere between eighteen months to two years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure, how can you combat against “light speed” foreclosures? The most important tool you can use to defend against our court’s quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclosure defense attorney to guide you through the minefield of valid defenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t settle for anything less than an initial face-to-face meeting with the attorney. Let’s face it. If they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “too busy” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the attorney has plenty of litigation and trial experience (at least fifteen years), and that the attorney regularly practices in the county where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the attorney has a proven track record of outstanding results and satisfied clients. Ask the attorney to refer you to at least three satisfied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the attorney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the office.
Another critical tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law firm you hire to defend your case has established loan modification and consumer bankruptcy departments. This will give you the very best opportunity to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure case are not accepted by the court, you can process a loan modification, reinstatement, or short payoff of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you can file a consumer bankruptcy and attempt to complete the modification within the bankruptcy proceeding. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same office. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients, so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with attorney Omar Arcia, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appointment online.

I received a complete new oral makeover and I am thrilled with the results and it was virtually all pain free. They are the best. Dr. Mesa is a pretty darn good tennis player too.” — J.E.

ccording to Realtor.com, there are eight common buyer questions. We will address three of those questions today and the others next month. What home can I afford? Before assisting any buyer, an experience agent makes sure that the buyer has spoken to his bank or a mortgage broker. The information provided by the buyers allows the broker to give the buyers a range within which to work. That agent will search within that financing framework. Based on the bubble our industry just experienced, along with the new TRID* rules, no buyer should experience a short sale or foreclosure because they were not properly informed of what they could afford (if his income earnings remain the same and there are no circumstances that could not be avoided). Can I buy a home and sell my current one at the same time? According to the Florida Realtors, the TRID rules may have created a “traffic jam” regarding simultaneous closings. They advise to avoid simultaneous closings, at least initially, because that would involve “multiplying by two the anticipated complexities TRID will likely cause and the second transaction may fail if the first closing does not occur.” However, once the new TRID rules have been in existence and we as an industry learn to comply and work through these new rules, you will see simultaneous closings. Cash transactions do not involve TRID. To affect a simultaneous closing, your home needs to be on the market for sale before you begin looking for your new home. The ideal situation would be to close and rent back your current home, so that the contract could be written without any sale-of-current-home contingency. If you are financing your new home, the qualification letter written by your lender will not have to mention that you can afford your new home subject to selling and closing on your current home. Some buyers have lost bids due to the pending closing of their current home – especially if they are bidding against a cash buyer with absolutely NO contingencies. An experienced sales associate will help a seller/buyer navigate these waters. How many homes should I see before making an offer? Some have fallen in love at first sight. However, a look at the entire list of opportunities before making any decision and an attempt to protect that buyer’s interest to keep him from losing his first love is the work of an experienced agent. Because South Florida is seated in a seller’s market with low inventory, there have been occasions where a buyer had to act quickly, having all his ducks in a row with his financing and contingencies. CoreLogic’s latest Equity Report revealed that 256,000 properties regained equity in the third quarter of 2015. This is great news for the country, as 92% of all mortgaged properties are now in a positive equity situation. If you are a sitting-on-the-fence buyer, these facts should convince you to get off the fence NOW. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. “Finley” pet of the month
Are You Still Paying Too Much For Your Medications?
Their Price
CelebrexTM $
Finley is a four-yearold male Golden Retriever. His favorite person is his heroic dad Ron, who rescued him from an animal shelter. Finley’s favorite toys are his stuffed bear that he throws around in the air and the socks that the kids leave around the house. Finley loves to cuddle and be scratched. He also likes doggy peanut butter ice cream, casual walks, and chewing stuffed animals. Finley dislikes loud noises, especially thunderstorms, balloons, and the vacuum. His favorite thing to do is chase lizards and ducks and to be loved by his family. Finley was last seen sleeping, while sprawled out and practically pushing his humans out of bed.
