to believe that the school year is quickly coming to an end. It’s no coincidence that the last full month of school is Teacher Appreciation Month. It’s the time to thank those special individuals who have had a positive impact on your children. Before that final bell rings, be sure to finalize your summer camp plans. The Our City Media Camp Guide, available on our website, is a great resource to see all of the programs available in your area. Spring is the time for new growth, and our family of local community news publications is no exception. My staff and I are thrilled to introduce Our City Hollywood & Hallandale, reaching an additional 20,000 readers in these beautiful coastal communities. Our seven free monthly magazines now provide engaging and informative articles covering community and school news, as well as providing expert advice columns and business profiles to 140,000 homes and businesses stretching from the Dade County line all the way to Sunrise. Finally, let us not forget that May is the time we celebrate Mother’s Day. Please take a little pause to honor your mother (and your wife) for these loving ladies are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us and pamper us. Let’s pamper them for a change!

Friends of the Davie Farm Park Kick Off Capital Campaign By Debby Teich
L
ast month , the Friends of the Davie Farm Park launched a
capital campaign to assist the Town of Davie in raising the funds needed to begin building the Governor Leroy Collins Farm Park. The 84-acre Farm Park is located on the western edge of the Town of Davie, bordering I-75 on the west, Shotgun Road on the east, and SW 36th Street on the south. If the capital campaign goes well, construction should begin in the fall and the park will be open in 2016. The project strives to increase the public’s understanding of the vital role agriculture plays in our everyday survival, while making learning fun and preserving open space. It will cost an estimated $24 million, and $15 million has already been expended on the purchase of the land, which the Town of Davie has owned for a number of years. Another $9 million is needed for park development. “We are looking for community partners and sponsors to help make this a reality,” said Davie Mayor Judy Paul, who is assisting with the fund raising campaign. “This park will be a unique agritourism destination that will have something for everyone. I am personally excited about the farmer’s market and look forward to being able to help children and adults alike learn about vegetables and fruit from seed to market. Special programs on nutrition will also be available through our educational programming.”
The park will have a working urban mini-farm, where crops are grown and animals are raised, and many opportunities for hands-on learning. Some of the things at the park will include: ▸▸ 7,000 square foot Gold LEED Certified Educational Center that showcases the history of agriculture in South Florida and houses the park’s state-ofthe-art classrooms and exhibits. ▸▸ Farmer’s Market that sells produce grown on site and provides space to local farmers to market their produce. ▸▸ Multi-purpose indoor/outdoor arena with specialized therapy programs for special needs children, 4-H programs, and other equestrian shows and competitions. ▸▸ Horse stables, where volunteers and students can learn about equestrian care, barn management, and more. ▸▸ Farm Animal Barnyard, where visitors can interact with cows, sheep, goats, chickens, and pigs. ▸▸ Crops and Gardens area, which provides produce to the Farmers Market; has a greenhouse for researching farming techniques and produce species; contains a butterfly garden; and has a portion dedicated to a lake and wetlands. ▸▸ A variety of educational programs. The theme for the Farm Park is “Making a Difference.” Some of the many ways that the project will do this is through youth (volunteer opportunities, farm tours, 4-H Club, nutrition programs, field trips) and in the environment (composting, biodigester, organic farming, windmill). It will also offer programs for special needs children and their families, as well as at-risk students. For information, visit www.daviefarmpark.org.

Chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in free, open chess play in Cooper City. Many of them are local students that are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. The Saturday play gives them an opportunity to meet and play with students in other schools. Many adults also attend.
Chess players enjoy the monthly Mayor’s Chess Challenge.
“While playing chess, you need to comprehend, analyze and evaluate each move on a continual basis,” said Lynda Good, Director of Recreation. “Chess introduces critical thinking skills, which are very important for any age.” Cooper City has hosted the Mayor’s Chess Challenge since last November, when Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross and other mayors throughout the county began to encourage and promote chess, which is now part of the 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum in Broward County Schools. The initial event was such a success that the City set aside one Saturday of the month for chess play. Mayor Ross attends the monthly challenges to play a friendly game of chess and meet the

When prospective players arrive, the chess boards are already set up. Mayor Ross and some of the other players typically work with beginning players to show them the game. Light refreshments are served for all to enjoy. Nathan Kapit, 12, plans to attend the May challenge. “I taught myself the game of chess and usually play against the computer,” said Nathan. “I am looking forward to meeting some kids my own age who love the game, so I can play against them after school.” For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

fishing rods as they spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 33rd Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin› Rodeo. It will be held at Wolf Lake Park, 5400 SW 76th Avenue in Davie. Registration begins at 7:30am on the morning of the Rodeo. This year, organizers have added basic fishing instruction before and after the event.
There is a $9 fee to participate, which includes lunch, bait (live red worms), an event cap (while supplies lasts), and all the fun you can handle. Extra live red worms will be available for sale or you can bring your own. Kids need to bring their own fishing poles. All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Once families find a spot on the lake, they are permitted to fish from 9 to 11am. The kids will be divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When the kids catch a fish, they bring it to the judges table, where a volunteer will help to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Prizes will be awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight). Some of the prizes include fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. The categories include: ▸▸ Most Fish Caught Over 3 Inches ▸▸ Longest Bass Caught ▸▸ Longest Fish Caught (Not a Bass) ▸▸ Most Unusual Catch ▸▸ Sportsmanship “It is always difficult to find a way to pull my children away from Xbox,” said Kevin Brandes of Davie. “I am looking forward to this event, because it is a great way to spend quality time with them. I enjoy fishing on most weekends and feel like this is a part of me that I can pass down to my children.”

Many Head and Neck Cancers Are Preventable, Treatable Cancers of the head and neck are a major health problem, with human papilloma virus associated head and neck cancers reaching epidemic proportions. More than 400,000 John Greskovich Jr., MD patients are Cleveland Clinic Florida diagnosed with Radiation Oncologist cancer of the tongue and tonsils worldwide each year. These types of cancers can affect a number of body parts, including oral
or nasal cavities, the sinuses, voice box, throat, salivary glands, lymph nodes, tonsils and tongue. The good news is that most head and neck cancers are very preventable, as a high percentage is tied to tobacco use. You can reduce your risk by not using tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco. Alcohol use is also a contributing factor, so it is important to consume in moderation. Over recent years there has been a growing number in cases of tongue and tonsil cancer

associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV). Therefore, we recommend vaccinating boys and girls, typically between the ages of 9 and 14, with the HPV vaccine. Vaccination to protect against HPV infection involves a series of three shots. Symptoms Patients who should be evaluated for head and neck cancers include those who have the following symptoms, especially if present for a week or two: • hoarseness • ear pain • sore throat • difficulty swallowing foods • sores in the mouth • sudden onset of dentures not fitting • foul-smelling breath Treatment Options If you are diagnosed with a head or neck cancer, it is important to get opinions from a head and neck surgeon, a radiation oncologist, as well as a medical oncologist, who specialize in treatments for head and neck cancer. For certain cancers, surgery might be the best treatment, but for others, radiation with or without chemotherapy is better. The collaborative model of medicine practiced at Cleveland Clinic Florida, allows patients the opportunity to be seen by all necessary specialists on the same day, in one location. Physicians work as a team to develop an individualized treatment plan with the best course of action for you. For local-regionally advanced, HPVassociated tonsil or tongue cancer, Cleveland Clinic has reported cure rates in the 90 percent range. Cure rates for other head and neck tumors depend on the site and stage of the disease.

Southwest Ranches Offers College Scholarships By Debby Teich

who plan to continue their education beyond high school have an opportunity to get some financial assistance. The School Education Advisory Board (SEAB), in conjunction with the Town of Southwest Ranches, will be awarding college scholarships to deserving Southwest Ranches students. This is the third year that the scholarship program will be offered. The deadline to apply is May 28. Two of SEAB’s goals are to assist the town with continued education and to be advocates for young people. “Everyone has heard the saying, ‘it takes a village…,’” said Kathy Sullivan, SEAB Chairperson. “Well Southwest Ranches has taken that to heart when it comes to our children. We are a town built and maintained largely by volunteers. These volunteers are residents and their children. Because the students of Southwest Ranches have contributed their muscle, creativity, artwork, scout troops, and ingenuity to create a wonderful place to live, I am so proud to be a part of giving something back to them. You see our students in artwork at town hall, garbage cans at the park built by students and signs designed by them. The money raised for these deserving students is not enough to put them through college, but I believe it will serve as a source of pride to be acknowledged by the Town that they have given so much to.” The scholarships will be awarded at the Town Council Meeting in June. decision will be based on school and non-school activities, service hours, work experience, weighted GPA, an essay of 250-300 words, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation (preferably one from a faculty member and one from a community member or employer). Scholarship money can be used for tuition, dorm/rent, food plan, books/school supplies, student activity fees, parking fees and lab fees. The application is posted on the Town’s website, www.southwestranches. org. Residents must: be under the age of 25 years old; have been a resident of Southwest Ranches for the last two years; have served 20 volunteer hours in direct service to the Town in the last year; have a current “weighted” GPA of 2.5 or higher; and submit an application, recommendation letters, and signed volunteer forms to Town Hall by the deadline. On May 30, the Town will hold a fundraiser to raise money for the Southwest Ranches Scholarship Fund. Friends, families, and neighbors will gather to enjoy a variety of food from the Food Trucks. In addition, there will be a silent auction, Chinese auction, petting zoo, scavenger hunt and giveaways. All proceeds will benefit the Southwest Ranches College Scholarship Fund. Davie to Honor Veterans on Memorial Day by Debby Teich
F
or more than 40 years , Davie families have been gather -
ing for the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony to pay their respects to the men and women who died while serving in the military. On May 25, the Town of Davie, Scoutmasters Camporee Committee South Florida Council, and the Boy Scouts of America will present the event once again. It is a great way to spend time with the family and pay homage to the Veterans. “This parade and Memorial Day Ceremony is one of the few opportunities that are still open to us in South Florida to not only show our appreciation to our service men and women for their sacrifices on our behalf, but to also show, by example, our youth their obligation to continue to recognize those that serve,” said Jose R Quintero, 2016 Scoutmasters Camporee Chief. The festivities will begin at 9am with the Memorial Day Parade Assembly at Nova Eisenhower Elementary School. Scouting units and community organizations are encouraged to participate. The parade starts at 10am, when the streets will be lined with patriotic people waving their American flags and dressed in red, white and blue. Some of the participants include: scouts, schools, local organizations and businesses, Davie Police and Fire Rescue, military organizations,
local politicians and more. The parade will proceed down Davie Road, beginning at SW 39th St and ending at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Following the parade, at 11am, a Memorial Service will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Participants will show their support for our soldiers and recognize the sacrifices they have made and are making to ensure the country’s freedom. Soldiers who fought in each of the different wars will be recognized during a moving ceremony that includes a 21 Gun Salute. Colonel Mark R. Hollahan, USMC, from the US Southern Command, will be the keynote speaker. Flags will be available prior to the service for $1. During the service, the public can place the flags on Veteran’s grave markers. “We invite everyone to come and participate, either as a spectator or as a participant in the parade, so that we can really demonstrate to all those that served our country how much we truly appreciate them,” said Quintero. Civic or community groups that want to march in the parade should send an email to joseq071@gmail.com. For information, visit smcc. us or www.davie-fl.gov.

But, have you ever wondered why someone your age looks much younger or older than you? The truth is we have the ability to alter the process at which we age. Listed below are five helpful tips on how we can slow down this process to become healthier, youthful, attractive and more energetic.

Estrogen - Estrogen has been known as the “Fountain of Youth” for women for years. Estrogen preserves the youthful appearance of skin by maintaining skin thickness and collagen. ▸▸ 30% of collagen is lost within two years post menopause if no replacement of Estrogen is given. ▸▸ Estrogen therapy increases skin collagen up to 48% more than those not on Bio-Identical Estrogen replacement. Testosterone - Low Testosterone is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. A recent study found that men with low levels of Testosterone were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. Both men and women need Testosterone. Restoring Testosterone with Bio-Identical Hormones offers a wealth of benefits: ▸▸ Improves glucose control ▸▸ Decreases abdominal fat/improves body composition ▸▸ Builds bone ▸▸ Improves libido and erectile function ▸▸ Improves memory ▸▸ Decreases stiffness and pain in muscles and joints ▸▸ Improves energy
Exercise
Although exercise per se has not been shown directly to increase longevity, the research has shown that regular exercise decreases the incidence of developing age-related diseases, such as: cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cataracts, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.
Vitamins/Diet
Optimization in vitamins, whether through supplements or food, is crucial in cellular function and optimization of the body. It is the foundation to create energy and sleep/wake cycles, as well as to assist in bone health, mental functioning and essentially every process in the body.
Stress
Managing chronic stress is paramount when talking about aging. Stress, whether it is a mental or physical stressor, places a huge burden on the body. Chronic stress has been shown to have numerous negative health impacts, from insomnia and Alzheimer’s disease to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Learning to cultivate a less stressful lifestyle and giving the body proper nutrients to address the deficiencies that are required for our stress hormones can greatly impact the aging process.
Aesthetic Procedures
A combination of Botox, Filler and, if needed, Hair Transplants can drop off up to 10 years or more. By using a combination of both Botox and Fillers, the ability to wipe away worry lines and lift folds in the face is a reality giving the face a more restful, youthful and lifted appearance. Not to mention the ability of hair transplants to transform your appearance by filling in thinning, balding and/or receding hair lines naturally utilizing your own hair. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, IV Nutrition Therapy, Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy and Hair Restoration. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www. BellissimoMedical.com or call 954-384-8989 to schedule your free consultation.

29th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic to Benefit Children’s Home By Debby Teich
V
olunteers at N ew H orizon U nited M ethodist Church in
Southwest Ranches have been busy preparing for the 29th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic and Silent Auction Luncheon on May 9. Proceeds will benefit the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, a faith-based, welcoming and diverse home that provides care to children, youth and families throughout Florida. “This is a fun day for a worthy cause,” said Wanda Stalnaker, New Horizon United Church volunteer. “The golf course is beautiful and a delicious lunch is included. There is also an opportunity to participate in a silent auction for many beautiful items. The children whom this event supports are very appreciative. Please join us.” The Classic will be held at Jacaranda Golf Club in Plantation. It features an 8am shotgun start. The tournament ends with an awards luncheon and a silent auction, with items such as trips, hotels, airline tickets, sports memorabilia, spa visits, and much more. The cost is $150 for a single or $500 for a foursome, including greens fee, cart, drawing ticket, range balls, luncheon, shirt and/or gift bag, and other fun. Non-golfers are also welcome and can pay $35 to attend the luncheon and silent auction. This is the 12th year that the golf tournament will benefit the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, which helps over 1,500 children each year. What began as the Florida Methodist Orphanage in 1908 has become a 100-acre safe haven for children who have been abused or are victims of broken and dysfunctional families. It gives them a safe place to heal and get support, so they can grow into healthy, educated adults. The Children’s Home offers specialized residential care and treatment with nurturing house-parents and therapists who help each child. Additionally, the Home reaches into the community by recruiting, training, licensing and monitoring loving foster care families and adoption services. This year, the proceeds of the New Horizon Golf Classic and Silent Auction

will be used to help launch the Home’s Open Hearts Family Services Foster Care Program in South Florida. This program has been established in other Florida counties with huge success, because it carefully matches the child to the best foster parents and then provides the important ongoing physical, mental, and emotional support required. For information on the golf tournament, call 954-240-6441or visit www.newhorizonumc.com/golfandauction2015.html.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and may include chronic muscle pain, painful joints, stiffness, numbness, or tingling. In addition, some may experience tension or migraine headaches, sensitivity to light or smells, and in more severe cases, depression and chronic fatigue.
cAuSeS
Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Recent research suggests that changes in the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) may be responsible. As we age, the vertebral joints of the spine begin to degenerate and can press on the roots of the spinal nerves, causing the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia. It can also result from traumatic injuries, infections, diabetes, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins.

proper chiropractic care can relieve the pressure on the spinal nerves. Spinal adjustments can bring the vertebrae back into alignment, releasing
trapped or compressed nerves.

Cooper City Residents to Celebrate Moms By Debby Teich
T
he City of Cooper City is offering families two
ways to help celebrate Moms and the many things that make them special. They can participate in the MotherDaughter Tea or Mother’s Day at the Pool. “The goal of the Cooper City Recreation Department is to promote community involvement by residents of all ages,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist. “We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to reach the residents of Cooper City.” On May 9, from 11am – 1pm, Cooper City moms and their daughters, ages pre-K and up, will gather for a Mother-Daughter Tea Party at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2001, this hometown event has been a way for them to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy a special afternoon together. Many of them return year after year. Approximately 100 residents typically participate in the event. Dressed in party attire, they will sample a variety of teas, coffee, lemonade, finger sandwiches, and desserts. The teacups, saucers, sugar bowls, and creamers are all pieces from authentic tea sets that are borrowed from residents and participants.

Daughters will have the opportunity to complete a craft project for their mothers. They will also get to bid on a variety of auction items. Mothers and daughters will receive a keepsake photo of the event. Reservations are required. The cost is $10 per person. On May 10, families can treat mom to a free day of swimming. Mom’s swim is free on Mother’s Day during regular pool hours at the Cooper City Pool & Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebridge Parkway. Mother or child must be a Cooper City resident and provide proof. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Dads had their turn earlier in the year with Father and Son Adventure and the Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance. Grandparent’s Day and MotherSon Night of Fun will be held later in the year. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the middle. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents The Runner Stumbles By Debby Teich
T
his month , Davie residents can experience
live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present The Runner Stumbles by Milan Stitt. Performances will be held on May 29, 30, and June 5, 6, at 8pm, as well as May 30, 31 and June 6, 7 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. Based on a 1919 murder trial, The Runner Stumbles is a courtroom drama set in an isolated Michigan town. Gossip ignites as a priest and a nun are suspected of having an affair which ends in the nun’s murder. With the priest held as the chief suspect, the action alternates between interrogations, testimony and scenes from the past. ACT of Davie’s production of The Runner Stumbles will be directed by Rachel Finley, a former student of Milan Stitt. The cast includes: Katt Neale, former stage manager of Arsenic and Old Lace; Lory Reyes, who was in ACT’s recent Other Desert Cities; Carla Heller, who recently directed Arsenic and Old Lace and was a cast member in The Allergist’s Wife; Scott Osit, new to ACT’s stage; and Lenny Marine, formerly in ACT’s Bus Stop. Several of the Board Members are actively involved in every production, including Christopher Harrington, Barry Katz, Carole Czvekus, Dana
Fredebaugh (who is also in this production), Sylvia Alexander, David Alexander, Bonnie Ladich and Fern Katz. There are also many dedicated volunteers, including Mary Ellen Meeks, Bob Moring, Adele Robbins, Marcy Decker, Bruce Bornstein and Dale Kelleher. Since 1999, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. It all started when an ad appear in the Davie Update asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first (and only) community theatre. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s board’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year and then sends out audition notices throughout South Florida. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more.

Davie Update By Mayor Judy Paul
T
he Town of Davie recently installed 10
Big Belly Solar Trash Compactors at five Town facilities, including Town Hall, Pine Island Park, Shenandoah Park, Sunny Lake Bird Sanctuary and Sunny Lake Bird Sanctuary Expansion. The Town received five compactors free from Waste Management and the remaining five compactors were obtained through a Broward County Parks for Preservation Grant. The compactor is designed to handle five times the amount of trash that a standard trash can hold. As a result, the Town is able to reduce the service costs, while reducing the Town’s carbon footprint. The capacity reduces costs, as the compactors need to be emptied less often and staff time can be allocated to address other pending needs. Fewer collections mean cost savings for fuel and maintenance and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Town is committed to implementing new technologies to promote sustainable living for its residents.
PROTECT THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE.
LIFE
AUTO
As part of our strong commitment to environmental sustainability, I want to encourage everyone to recycle. We must save the earth, even if it’s by keeping one plastic bottle at a time out of the landfills. I get so discouraged when I see plastic bottles and soda cans in the garbage. Keep in mind that household hazardous waste should also be disposed of properly. The next household hazardous waste and electronics recycling drop off for Davie residents will be held on June 5, at Davie Town Hall, from 8am-4pm. A shred-a-thon will be held at the same location from 8am-1pm. That is a good time to dispose of all those private documents and keep information out of the hands of identity thieves. For more information about recycling, bulk or garbage pickups, please contact Gay at 954-797-1045. Congratulations to the South Florida Cloggers. They recently returned from their Tennessee tour, where they competed with others from around the country. They won seven medals in freestyle; 1st place overall for Boss, ages 16-18, Moving Line division; 1st place for Precision, ages 7-9; 1st place overall for Exhibition, ages 30 and over; 2nd place for Small Team, ages 7-9, Spice Girls; 3rd place for Up Town Funk, ages 10-12; and 2nd place for Circus, ages13-15. Circus got the only standing ovation of the competition!! Way to go! You help to spread the word about the wonderful Town of Davie.

The Facts about Laughing Gas
Will Johnny Ever Leave Home?
By Dr. Maria Grosman
L
By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor
ike many parents in our community, I
tend to approach the use of any medicine for my children with a discerning eye. What are the risks and benefits of its use? How long will it last in the system? Are there any side effects I should look for or take home instructions needed? It is for this reason, that I am happy to educate the public on the use and safety of Nitrous Oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) for use with the apprehensive pediatric dental patient, when indicated. It is first important to point out the very long history and safe track record of its use. Nitrous oxide (N20) was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in 1772. Interestingly, its use for the first 80 years was mostly for entertainment purposes receiving its current nickname “laughing gas”. In 1845, Horace Wells, a dentist from Hartford CT, demonstrated its use as an anesthetic during the extraction of a wisdom tooth at Harvard University. His work on nitrous oxide would eventually earn him the distinction of being the discoverer of anesthesia. Once accepted by the medical community, its method of delivery had been improved and in turn its impeccable safety record had become established.
Nitrous oxide is a gas that is delivered through inhalation. Although early documentation showed safe delivery in its pure form, safety has increased exponentially with its combination with oxygen. The addition of oxygen assures that there will be no decrease in oxygenation of the body throughout its use. New sophisticated equipment also assures desired concentrations by a titrating delivery mechanism, allows for rapid reversal, and disallows usage of more than 70% nitrous gas. The combination with oxygen has not only made the use of nitrous safer, but has also made its use more versatile. Its first use was prior to the discovery of the local anesthetic, lidocaine. For this reason, it was administered at higher concentrations in order to achieve some form of anesthesia (relief of pain). In the dental environment, it is given at a much lower dosage (much lower than the recommended limit) in order to achieve anxiolysis, or reduction of anxiety. Its safety record at these lower doses is impeccable. In the 1970’s, H. Ruben had documented 3 million cases of its use for dentistry without adverse reaction. In answer to my initial questions, nitrous oxide is a safe and odorless inhalant, which exits the body immediately after removal. The only routine recommendation we give is no ingestion of food or drink 60 minutes prior to its use to eliminate chance of nausea. Although we prefer to treat our patients without the need of an anxiolytic, Nitrous Oxide remains a perfect alternative for pediatric patients who may otherwise have a “bad experience”. Negative experiences in youth have been shown to create long term dental anxiety lasting into adulthood for some dental patients. It is for this reason, that over 80% of all pediatric dentists report using it in their practice. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 954-236-3434.

E
conomics 101: The price of any item is
determined by the supply of that item, and the market demand. NAR’s Chief Economist, Lawrence Yun, stated: “Insufficient supply appears to be hampering prospective buyers in several areas of the country and is hiking prices. Stronger price growth is a boon for homeowners looking to build additional equity, but it continues to be an obstacle for current buyers looking to close before (interest) rates rise.” Consumer confidence is at the highest level in over a decade. Pair that with interest rates still under 4%, new programs available for down payments as low as 3%, and you have an attractive market for buyers. Or do you? Lawrence Yun commented that the disparity between rent and income growth has widened to unhealthy levels and is making it harder for renters to become homeowners. “In the past five years, a typical rent rose 15 percent while the income of renters grew by only 11 percent,” he said. “The gap has worsened in many areas as rents continue to climb and the accelerated pace of hiring has yet to give workers a meaningful bump in pay.” According to Yun, the share of renter households has been increasing…A typical homeowners’ net worth climbs because of upticks in home values and declining mortgage balances. The result has been an unequal distribution of wealth as renters continue to feel the pinch of increasing housing costs every year. Yun also stated: “Meanwhile, current renters seeking relief and looking to buy are facing the same dilemma: home prices are rising much faster than their incomes. With rents taking up a larger chunk of household incomes, it’s difficult for first-time buyers – especially in high-cost areas – to save for an adequate down payment.” “Many of the metro areas that have experienced the highest rent increases are popular to millennials because of their employment opportunities,” adds Yun. “With a stronger economy and labor market, it’s critical to increase housing starts for entry-level buyers or else many will face affordability issues if their incomes aren’t compensating for the gains in home prices.” Millennials (ages 18 to 34) are slower to leave home than previous generations. With $33,883 as the median income for this age group, along with $1.1 trillion in mounting student loan debt, millennials like Johnny are still living with mom and/ or dad. In fact, 33% of his generation do – the highest in recordable history. Here’s the good news. Recent economic reports show a steady shift toward more jobs and increased wage growth. May I Relocate? By Evan Baron
R
elocation involves a parent who
wishes to move out of this jurisdiction with his/ her minor children. This issue can surface during a divorce or after a divorce has been finalized. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home,” where they may have emotional and perhaps financial support. Sometimes a family relocates to South Florida due to a job transfer or a better career opportunity. It may require the couple to move away from the comfort of their home and the security of their family. The problems that a desire to relocate creates cannot usually be resolved by a simple agreement. As an example, mom wants to move back to Massachusetts with the parties’ two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps.”

MAY 2015 | OUR CITY DAVIE
The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This, of course, can cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. This is especially true if the parents are following a 50/50 time sharing schedule. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however, allow for relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children against the effect it will have on the parent/child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule. Family court judges will often express the fact that these types of cases are the most difficult to decide. If you are faced with a possible relocation issue, I suggest you contact my office and schedule a free consultation. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Horseplay: A Road to Recovery By Sheriff Scott Israel
A
t the B roward S heriff ’ s O ffice , we
take a holistic approach to fighting crime in Broward County. The primary goal of law enforcement is to reduce violent crime, something we do very well. But there are other ways both to reduce crime and improve the quality of life of the residents of our county. Last April, I was approached by a woman who told me about her 12-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with cancer. She shared with me that when her daughter was feeling happier, her blood levels would improve, and she was at her happiest when she was with horses. For those of you who don’t know, my father, Sonny Israel, was a mounted police officer in New York City for six years. My dad taught me a love of horses at an early age. I understand how interaction with these animals could be therapeutic. The story of this young girl compelled me to ask local experts about the value of equine-assisted therapy, a program that combines traditional therapy with horses. All the experts I approached were forthcoming about the successes they personally experienced, particularly for patients struggling with mental illness. After hearing these testimonials, I believed there was a great need for this service. I wanted the Broward Sheriff’s Office to begin exploring ways to incorporate equine-assisted therapy within our existing programs at our Department of Community Programs. The mission of equine-assisted therapy is to ease pain and add joy to the lives of some of our county’s most vulnerable people. This prompted me to organize the first mobile equine-assisted therapy unit in Broward County. The Broward Sheriff’s Office has received hundreds of letters of gratitude, which speak to the results of the program. Since last August, BSO’s Equine-Assisted Therapy Program has reached more than 75 juveniles in the civil citation program. Exposing these at-risk youths to the benefits of equine-assisted therapy has helped to keep these first-time offenders on the right path. Our therapy program has also aided in the recovery of residents in halfway houses who suffer from drug or alcohol addictions. At the Peaceful Haven Ranch, individuals with severe developmental disabilities, some without even basic verbal skills, have made positive contact with our horses. We are also partnering with the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to help raise the spirits of children suffering from cancer. One of our lieutenants at BSO has a daughter with Williams Syndrome, a physical and cognitive disability. Last September, he experienced firsthand how an individual’s interaction with these animals helped relieve the stress of their daily life and put a smile on their face. He was compelled to do whatever it took for this important cause, including sitting on the board of Equine Therapies of South Florida. The lieutenant is hopeful that his daughter’s participation in this program will help bring to joy to her life. Equine-assisted therapies are important to our community because they can truly help anyone. Whether a resident is suffering from stress or schizophrenia, this is a therapy that is proven to make a difference. I encourage anyone interested in participating in this value-added therapy or partnering with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to contact Don Maines, our treatment counselor in Community Services, at 954-309-6957 or at Donald _Maines@sheriff.org.
