Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”

Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue
sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” For a consultation with a Cleveland Clinic Florida breast specialist, call 866.213.5789 or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/breastcancer for more information.

Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever
T
he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

Cooper City Residents to Celebrate Moms COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he City of Cooper City is offering families two ways to help celebrate Moms and the many things that make them special. They can participate in the Mother-Daughter Tea or Mother’s Day at the Pool. On May 13, from 11am – 1pm, Cooper City moms and their daughters, ages pre-K and up, will gather for the popular classic tea party at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2001, this hometown event has been a way for them to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy a special afternoon together. Many of them return year after year. Approximately 100 residents typically participate in the event. Dressed in party attire, they will sample a variety of teas, coffee, lemonade, finger sandwiches, and desserts. The teacups, saucers, sugar bowls, and creamers are all pieces from authentic tea sets that are borrowed from residents and participants. This year’s theme is Derby Day. Wear your party dresses and bring a Derby hat to enter the contest. During the Tea, daughters can complete a craft project for their mothers. Mothers and daughters will also receive a keepsake photo of the event. There is limited seating and no tickets will available at the door. Tickets are only available to Cooper City residents (proof of residency required) and are on sale at the Community Center. The cost is $25 per couple/$10 each additional daughter. On Mother’s Day, May 14, families can treat mom to a free day of swimming.
Mom’s swim is free during regular pool hours at the Cooper City Pool & Tennis Center, 11600 Stonebridge Parkway. Mother or child must be a Cooper City resident and provide proof. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Dads recently had their turn earlier in the year with the Father and Son Adventure Night. Other events include Mom-Son Night of

35th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo Offers Quality Family Time COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n June 3, Davie children will trade their electronics for fishing rods as they spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 35th Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo at the Davie Golf and Country Club, 8201 Nova Drive in Davie. Registration begins at 7am on the morning of the Rodeo. “This is a wonderful event for both children and their parents,” said Town of Davie Mayor Judy Paul. “Plus, the golf course has plenty of hungry fish just waiting to be caught!” There is a $10 fee/child to participate, which includes lunch, bait (live red worms), and event t-shirt for the first 200 kids to register. There is no advanced registration. Extra live red worms will be available for sale or you can bring your own. Kids need to bring their own fishing poles. All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Children are permitted to fish from 8am to 10am. The kids will be divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When the kids catch a fish,
they will bring it to the judges table, where a volunteer will help to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Prizes will be awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight). Some of the prizes include fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies. The categories include: ▸▸ Most fish caught over 3 inches ▸▸ Longest bass caught
▸▸ Longest fish caught (not a bass) ▸▸ Most unusual catch ▸▸ Sportsmanship “My two sons just started fishing and they can’t wait to participate,” said Ben Bradley. “I look forward to a day without electronics. I am so excited that we have an event like this in my hometown of Davie.” For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

or more than 40 years, Davie families have been gathering for the Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony to pay their respects to the men and women who died while serving in the military. On May 29, the Town of Davie, the Scoutmasters Camporee Committee of the South Florida Council, and the Boy Scouts of America will present the event once again. It is a great way to spend time with the family and pay homage to our veterans. “The Town of Davie takes great pride in partnering with the Boy Scouts of America to pay tribute to all of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Military, ensuring our freedoms as Americans,” said Jeff Pohlman, Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. Scouting units and community organizations

are encouraged to participate. The parade starts at 10:30am, when the streets will be lined with patriotic residents from Davie and across Broward County waving their American flags and dressed in red, white and blue. Participants will include scouts, schools, local organizations and businesses, Davie Police and Fire Rescue, military organizations, local politicians, and more. The parade will proceed down Davie Road, beginning at S.W. 39th Street and ending at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Following the parade, at 11am, a Memorial Service will take place at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road. Participants will show their support for our soldiers and recognize the sacrifices they have made and are making to ensure the country’s freedom. Soldiers who fought in each of the different
wars will be recognized during a moving ceremony that includes a 21 Gun Salute. Flags will be available prior to the service for $1. During the service, the public can place the flags on markers representing those military personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice. “We invite everyone to come and participate, either as a spectator or as a participant in the parade, so that we can really demonstrate to all those that served our country how much we truly appreciate them,” said Jose R Quintero, past chief of the Scoutmasters Camporee. To participate in the parade, send an email to chief@smcc.us; call 954-797-1181 or email afrancis@davie-fl.gov or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents I Never Sang for My Father COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting I Never Sang for My Father by Robert Anderson. Performances will be held at the Davie Pine Island Multipurpose Center on May 12, 13, 19, 20 at 8pm, 13, 14, 20, 21 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. I Never Sang for My Father is a drama that probes into the disquieting alienation that can exist between father and son - and which time and old age can only deepen - despite the best intentions of both. ACT of Davie’s production of I Never Sang for My Father is being directed by Richard A. Weissman. Cast members include: John F. Hernandez, Jeff Canary, Fern Katz, Elli Murray, Erin Craddock, Ron Pollack, Larry Chidsey and Dana Fredebaugh. ACT board members are actively involved in every production. They include: Dana Fredebaugh (president), Bonnie Ladich (VP/producer), Fern Katz (treasurer/ticket master), Sylvia Alexander (secretary/ refreshments), Christopher Harrington (set construction and design), Carole Czvekus (volunteers), Barry Katz (tickets sales), David Alexander (refreshments) and William Roach (publicity). Other dedicated volunteers include: Mary Ellen Meeks (set); Ned Cray (set); Marie Seibel (promo designs); Sylda Huff, Dale Kelleher, Adele Robbins and Linda Stein (tickets and lobby).
I NEVER SANG F MY FAT OR HER “ACT continues to thrive thanks to our enthusiastic audiences, the dedication and commitment of our volunteers - the Board of Directors, the actors, directors, production team, ticketing staff and concession crew - and the sponsorship of the Town of Davie,” said Fredebaugh. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a
way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. The volunteer group is budgeted by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s script committee, headed by Dana Fredebaugh, selects three shows to produce every year. After Board approval, they send out the call for directors by sending emails through the ACT Gmail “director contact list” and posting notices on several websites, including the Town of Davie website. Once the director is selected by the Board, emails are sent through the ACT Gmail “actor contact list” and posting notices go out to call for actors. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center and often sell-out. ACT is always looking for volunteers. Anyone interested in joining should send an email to actofdavie2016@gmail.com. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. For information, call 954327-3941, or send an email to actofdavie2016@gmail.com or visit www.davie-fl. gov/gen/DavieFL_SpclPrjcts/act.
Cooper City Resident Is Adult Honoree of Walk to Cure Arthritis BY DEBBY TEICH
M
ore than 53 million adults and 300,000 children live with arthritis, which can severely damage joints and rob them of living life to its fullest. On May 20, during Arthritis Awareness Month, over 300 walkers will participate in the 2017 Walk to Cure Arthritis at Nova Southeastern University in Davie to help support the Arthritis Foundation and its mission to cure arthritis and make it easier for people living with the disease to achieve everyday victories. Registration opens at 8am and the walk begins at 9am. “Help stop arthritis from stealing everyday joys and long-term dreams by supporting our mission and becoming a Champion of ‘YES,”’ said Katrina Alber, Development Director for Arthritis Foundation of South Florida. The Walk is the largest fundraiser and awareness event for the Arthritis Foundation in Broward County. It features a three-mile and one-mile course, along with live entertainment, refreshments, healthy activity, a kid’s corner, and educational opportunities. Participants are encouraged to bring their dogs on leashes for the “Arff-ritis” Walk, since many dogs also suffer from arthritis. During the walk, adult honoree Lisa Tasse of Cooper City will share her inspiring story of living with arthritis. Tasse is a Captain of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue team. She always lived a very active lifestyle, playing in a women’s soccer league. In 2007, she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and, in 2015, with rheumatoid arthritis. She has undergone two surgeries, including one knee replacement. Because of her profession, she is unable to take narcotics and instead stays active, riding a stationary and regular bicycle to manage her pain and maintain mobility. She is married to John and has two sons, Matt and Zach. “Ice is my best friend,” joked Lisa. Part of the funds raised will be used to help kids with arthritis attend a weeklong summer camps, Camp Funrise and Camp Boggy Creek, with activities designed to challenge them and raise their self-esteem by showing them what they CAN do rather than focusing on what they can’t. For information, visit www.WalkToCureArthritis.org/Broward or call Arthritis Foundation staff, Katrina Alber, at 954-662-9792.

Old Davie School Begins Countdown to 100th Birthday BY DEBBY TEICH
Old Davie School, today

ext year, the Old Davie School will celebrate its 100th anniversary. It has already started the countdown with a variety of activities planned for the upcoming year that celebrate and highlight the experiences of alumni— teachers and students - through the decades. The first two events will be held this month. On May 10, 1918, the small town gathered for the dedication of the school. With readings of poetry, songs and a flag drill presented by the students of Davie, Charles A. Walsh, owner of a local orange grove, accepted the building on behalf of the town. “We accept and thank you for this splendid building, a building no matter how large and important this community may grow, will ever be the center of its social action and the main cause of any progress we may make,” said Walsh. “The citizens of Davie will take pride in it, will maintain, and cherish it.” A few months later, the Davie School opened its doors to 90 students, with four

classrooms downstairs and a large auditorium upstairs. Walsh’s quote has essentially become the museum’s mission statement today. “It has carried us since 1918 through all its purposes as a school, a community center, and now a museum,” said Kim Weismantle, education director. “It’s an honor to continue serving the community into a new century!” 99 Year Social - On May Old Davie School, 1919 10, the Old Davie School will kick off the countdown to its 100th anniversary with a cocktail hour in the historic auditorium upstairs. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Ana or Annie for an appointment. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
It’s Not a Myth. Your Body Needs A Good Night’s Sleep BY JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
I
f you are putting in the work at the gym every day, eating healthy, and still not seeing the weight loss results you want or a change in your energy levels, lack of sleep may be the culprit. Did you know that an estimated 30% of American adults reported sleeping less than six hours a night? What’s more alarming is that people continue to put sleep in the back burner in order to keep up with the demands of a hectic, technology-driven society when the total opposite should be happening—sleep needs to be at the top of your to-do list! The human body needs sleep as much as it needs to breathe to function properly, because recovery is crucial. This is the time when your body uses cells to repair damage and creates antibodies to fight infections and keep you healthy. In addition, sleep time provides for new learning and memory pathways to be formed in the brain. While you are sleeping, heart rate and blood pressure slow down to give your heart a much needed break; one single night of sleep deprivation can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket the next day. And because sleep is vital, it also affects hormone production and may be the reason your weight loss efforts have stalled. Several studies have shown a link between sleep deprivation and an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. Why? Well, let’s consider the “hunger” hormones leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that decreases your appetite by notifying your brain that you’ve had enough food and have an energy balance. Ghrelin is the hormone that stimulates your appetite, usually increasing before a meal and decreasing right after. Ghrelin is also released by your body when you are under stress, thus making you want to reach for unneeded snacks. Consider what happens to your body when you are sleep deprived - you are irritable and feel tired; you have trouble making decisions and solving problems; you can’t focus; you are more easily confused and more likely to get sick. Essentially, your body is under stress and your ghrelin levels rise. Scientific studies have found that subjects who were sleep deprived experienced declines in leptin levels and an increase in ghrelin, which in turn increased their hunger, appetite and the cravings for high carbohydrate foods. A study also found that, following sleep loss, a group of healthy individuals started showing blood sugar and insulin levels similar to those seeing in people developing diabetes. Whether it is for weight loss purposes or to simply improve your quality of life, sleep must become a priority. The most important goal in functional medicine is the optimization of health and balance, which cannot happen without adequate sleep. If you are unable to get your eight hours a night, at Bellissimo Medical we can help you find the root of the problem, as well as guide you into making lifestyle changes that will restore your good health and well-being. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patient has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment,” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies, as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical, because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons, as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it! I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. The Toughest Decision BY EVAN BARON

have been practicing law for over 35 years. I realized many years ago that allowing a judge or jury to make a decision in a case is always a last resort. Cases that ultimately proceed to trial involve either issues that cannot be compromised or individuals who can be unreasonable in their expectations. If you proceed to trial, your ability to control your destiny is severely compromised. You are allowing a third party to dictate the terms and conditions of your future. I can assure you that Judges much prefer to approve a settlement reached by the parties than to decide the fate of individuals. Judges often tell the respective parties that they will always be better off deciding the case between themselves, rather that have he/she decide some of these issues. They are further informed that a judge’s job is to be fair and equitable, which means that after the trial is over both parties usually leave the courthouse unhappy, neither obtaining what they were seeking. Of course that is not always true. There are obviously times when parties’ expectations are within reason and the results obtained at trial are satisfactory.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
So how do you know when you should settle versus the alternative of going to trial? That is sometimes a very difficult question to answer. A lawyer can never guarantee results. A lawyer can advise a client about the law as it applies to the facts of his/her case. Often times judges have a great deal of discretion in their decision making, which makes any kind of prediction that much more difficult. Lawyers also assume that a judge will interpret the law as the lawyer interprets it. That is not always the case. When offers or counter-offers are unreasonable and one-sided, it is somewhat easy to make a decision. If you have nothing to lose by going to trail, and your worst result in court is still better than the offer being made, it is an easy decision. The cases which present the more difficult decisions are the one’s which result in offers which are perhaps fair but not quite what a person may envision as their end result. Perhaps the time sharing schedule with the minor children is not quite what was envisioned or the alimony amount is more than you expected to pay. Do you compromise or litigate? There is no easy answer. Each case needs to be looked at independently. A party must consider all possibilities. Cost and time are two important factors. A case which proceeds to trial will always take longer to conclude. The cost will always be greater. I suggest hiring an experienced trail attorney who can assist you in deciding the best way to conclude your case. There really is no substitute for experience. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

I
published an article years ago entitled, “Renovation or Relocation…That is the Question.” Still today, one of the greatest pastimes of many homeowners is to snuggle up to a new episode of “The Property Brothers” on HGTV to watch Jonathan turn an old house into a gem and Drew put it on the market for top dollar. In 2017, “home staging” has once again emerged as the buzz phrase among Real Estate professionals. The website, www.remodeling. hw.net/cost-vs-value/2017, is packed full of nationwide remodeling information by region. For instance, in 2017, a major kitchen remodel would cost about $59,000 and the resale value would be about $45,000, so the cost recouped by the seller would be 77%. The fact that you could enjoy that new kitchen while deciding to put your home on the market is part of the equation. A home addition, such as a family room totaling $83,000, would bring about a 96% cost recouped from the resale, while a bathroom remodel cost recouped is 73%. I would strongly urge you to visit the website to peruse the various project types, costs, resale value and cost recouped while you consider whether this is a task you want to undertake. Homes remodeled certainly sell more quickly than the competition that touts “original” or “handyman special.” Typically, unless there is a contractor in the family, most do not want to undertake this inconvenience. Renovation television shows remind you that the cost quoted and the actual completed cost could vary, because the contractor often discovers other issues as the renovations take place. According to RISMedia.com, there are three renovations that have little-tono payoff value: ▸▸ Luxury Add-ons: An indoor basketball court, wine cellar, sauna, or home theater ▸▸ Swimming Pool: The average cost of a new pool is $39,084, a hefty price tag that is seldom recovered once the home is sold. ▸▸ Gaudy Accents: Gold-plated crown molding, mosaic-tile backsplashes, and artistic mosaics in the tile floor often turn off the average homebuyer. A home valued at $600,000 after all the renovations will not sell in a neighborhood where homes are netting half that price. I recently went to an open house in our area where a home was remodeled to the “9s” in a neighborhood typically priced from $300,000-$400,000. This residence was totally remodeled, practically rebuilt, and doubled in size. The price tag is currently $700,000. I will be curious as to when and if it sells and for what price. Over-improvement is worse than no improvement. A neutral palette (with bold colors and tones in accent pieces) will move the home faster and with the possibility of multiple bids. A neutral palette allows the buyer to see his taste. Please contact me prior to renovating. I can view your home and prepare a thorough and comprehensive market analysis to help you decide whether you should renovate – either to enhance the enjoyment of your home or prepare it for our competitive marketplace. I Care I Cure Raises Money for Childhood Cancer COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
T
hroughout the year, the I Care I Cure (ICIC) Childhood Cancer Foundation helps raise awareness and funds for cutting edge research better cures for childhood cancer. Runners and walkers of all ages recently gathered at Nova Southeastern University in Davie for the 10th Annual 10th Anniversary I Care I Cure…I Run 5K & Family Fun Day, Mile Run of Color Fun and the student and adult team Childhood Cancer Challenge to raise awareness and funds for the foundation. More than 1,200 people participated in the event, which raised over $180,000 for the foundation. The event included a 5K Run, as well as a Mile Run of Color Fun, when participants wore white t-shirts and ran a mile while experiencing a deluge of safe, nontoxic, color. The race was followed by an expanded Family Fun Day with activities for kids, rock climbing, bungee rides, free food and entertainment, which included Cooper City High School’s drum line. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz presented co-founder Beth Besner of Davie with the Congressional record recognizing I Care I Cure.
The Corporate and Student Challenge drew in many teams and included tug of war, an inflatable maze, the Toxic Takedown and three-legged races. Team Greenie, which won this year’s Corporate Challenge, was led by board member Steven Greenbaum in honor of the Thomas Edwin Greenbaum Foundation. The team’s 75 participants raised over $8,000. Central Park Elementary won the Student Challenge. The team’s captain was Kevin Lebowitz, a 5th grader who recently lost his father to cancer. Since its inception, ICIC has funded more than $1.5 million in research projects both locally and throughout the United States. ICIC was founded in honor of Ian Besner of Davie, who passed away at the age of 11 from the effects of treatments used to combat leukemia. This year’s course took participants past the Ian Besner Baseball Field at NSU, named in his memory for his love of baseball. f you didn’t know it already, the Town of Davie has a lot of exciting projects underway, as well as many events, programs and activities to look forward to over the summer. We recently broke ground on the new Fire Station 86 and Community Center, located in Shenandoah Park. This exciting project is anticipated to be completed by mid to late 2018. The new community center will feature three programmable rooms that will be used for youth and adult programs, community meetings, rentals and more. The community center will also double as the Town of Davie’s Field Operations Center during times of natural disasters. Shenandoah Park is also receiving upgrades as well. We have installed new basketball and tennis courts and the Town of Davie’s first splash pad. Other improvements include outdoor fitness equipment and a new picnic pavilion. I strongly encourage everyone to visit Shenandoah Park where there is truly something for everyone to enjoy!

will be writing a monthly series on the newest direction in medicine – wellness. It has become a passion for me to practice and should become a passion for you to learn about and demand. Over the years of practicing medicine and moving forward in my natural progression of life, I have learned about things that affect most of us in the same way. Do you have a mother with Alzheimer’s, a father with arthritis in his knees, a family member that died from a heart attack, or a co-worker who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer? Well, I can say “yes” to all of these. Do you know that most of these conditions, if not all, did not have to happen? All of them can eventually happen to you and your children. You will be left feeling as sad as you feel today if you don’t do something about it now! Isn’t it obvious that medicine has prolonged the number of years people live, but has not improved or prolonged their health? Isn’t it also a familiar experience to go to your physician with an array of concerns and everyday symptoms not related to any specific illness, such as, “I’m always tired. I forget everything. I don’t want sex anymore. Everything bothers me.” The most common answer you receive in response to your concerns is, “You are fine. Your blood tests are okay. You are no longer 20-years old.” There are many things that we as physicians were not taught in medical school and specialty residencies. We were just educated to identify the disease and treat it, medically or surgically. It has been my own job to learn from life and from my patients that medicine clearly has different aspects and treating them for a disease or illness is one of them. Optimizing how patients feel, live and function, as well as providing them with healthy aging, is called “wellness.” Let medicine treat diseases, but have wellness prevent diseases!
What is wellness?
To me, wellness is a “personal optimization” or stage of well-being. It is an active process through which we become aware of, and make choices toward a healthier, happier, more successful, and longer life. When wellness refers to medicine, I call it “wellness plus” or integrated wellness.
What do you mean by “wellness before medicine”?
Years of well-being precede any disease and the practice of wellness can prevent the need for medicine. Today, diseases like Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, breast cancer and all their associated medical conditions are all preventable, but not curable. Together, they take the greatest toll on our deaths, family imposed burden and medical expenditures in the U.S., and they also confirm the lack of commitment to wellness in our country.
How is a wellness practice different from a traditional medical practice?
A wellness practice is indeed a medical practice, where its practicing physicians bridge the gap between conventional medicine and proactive well-being or preventive medicine. In addition: ▸▸ The practice of medicine no longer subscribes to the traditional philosophies of “diagnose-and-treat” or “fix-it-when-it’s broken.” ▸▸ The patient’s optimal well-being and health, not disease, becomes the primary focus. ▸▸ Physicians don’t treat “lab results,” but rather the patient’s symptoms. Dr. Castillo-Plaza is a long-time practicing physician with WellnessPlus offices in Pembroke Pines and Miami Beach. He is dedicated to wellness with a comprehensive approach to medicine. He looks where others usually don’t and transforms the patient’s experience into a journey of well-being. For information, visit www.wellnessplusmed.com or call 954 437-3756.

“Annie”
Annie is a 3-year-old terrier mix. She was rescued from Saving Grace and her Furry Friends Pet Rescue a year ago. Her favorite person is her human mom (Missy), but she loves her human little sisters too (Madison and Mia). Her favorite toy is her squeaky squirrel. She likes to act like she is part human and a lap dog. She loves going on walks. She does not like the vacuum. Her favorite thing to do is sleep in bed with mom and take walks with dad. She was last seen sunbathing on the back porch.
