Summer Sprouts New Changes at Our City Media

W

ith the school year coming to a close, families everywhere are shifting focus from homework and afterschool activities to summertime fun. The Our City Media family is undergoing a transition of its own. We are proud to introduce Terry Jaillet, who has joined us as co-publisher and the new owner. This is an exciting new era for Our City Media. Terry brings a great deal of enthusiasm and energy to our magazines. In the coming months you may start to notice a few changes, but rest assured you will continue to get the local community news you count on delivered to your door each month and we will still work closely with local businesses to help them reach their valued customers, our faithful readers. As you depart on your summer vacations, please don’t forget to take along your favorite ‘Our City’ magazine to catch up on what’s going on at home. Be sure to take some pictures holding the magazine cover and send them to us for our Photo of the Month contest. We love to see where our magazines will travel this season.

any kids dream of climbing inside some of the big trucks they pass on the road. On June 18, they will have an opportunity to see, touch, and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles, as well as to meet some of the people who drive them at the 18th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 500 people are expected to attend the event, from 9am to noon, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, located on the corner of Stirling Rd. and Palm Avenue. Admission is free. “We invite everyone to come out to see these trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes,” said Christine Averill, Recreation

Director. “This is a great opportunity to learn and understand more about what they do and how they operate.” In the past, there have been more than 30 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. Organizers are expecting approximately the same amount this year. The fire and police departments in Cooper City will bring out some of their trucks, cars and equipment. Waste Management will show kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There will be cranes and other construction trucks, Recreation Department shuttle buses, utility pump trucks, SWAT trucks, motorcycles,

and much more. Sandy Becker brought her three children, ages 4 to 8, to the event last year and plans to attend again. “They have been talking about it, since they attended last year,” said Becker. “They especially loved the fire rescue truck. I had just as much fun as they did!” Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. For information or to display a vehicle, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or send an email to recreation@ coopercityfl.org.

Gates open at 9am. There is no charge for spectators. Dress up your pets and equines for the The Animal Fashion Animal Fashion Show. Show begins at 10am. games and timed events. Kim Dickinson plans to enter with her schnauzer, Pepper, in the Best Matched Pair-Pet and Handler category. The two typically dress alike on Halloween. “I am looking forward to showing off our costumes at the event,” said Dickinson. “It sounds like fun and it is for a great cause.” Project Stable is an equestrian and farm program that works with specialneeds children and provides agricultural education to the general public. The program uses horses and farm animals to help special need children overcome their disabilities. It also provides volunteer opportunities for college and high school students to learn the importance of volunteering and the difference they can make in the life of a special-needs child. Scheduled to open fall 2017, the Governor Leroy Collins Farm Park is located on 84 acres on Shotgun Road in western Davie. It will celebrate the rural history of the Town of Davie, while educating the community on the important role agriculture plays in our everyday life and in creating a more sustainable world for tomorrow. It will provide an opportunity for youth and community programs, agriculture, nutrition, and environmental education, and more. The Horse Show features classes, games and timed events. The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are located at 4271 Davie Road in Davie. For information, visit www.daviefarmpark.org.

Town of Davie Sponsors Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day COMMUNITY NEWS

By Debby Teich

O

n July 4th, Davie residents can celebrate the holiday at the Town of Davie’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day. The festivities begin with Fun at the Pool, from 10am-4pm, at the Pine Island Pool. Activities include a free swim and inner tube water polo, as well as the Fun Foam Spray with the Davie Fire Department (11am), Dive-in Treasure Hunt (1pm) and Watermelon Eating Contest (3pm). From 4pm-9:30pm, the festivities continue at Bamford Sports Complex. Throughout the event, there will be kids’ arts and crafts, food trucks, face painting, bounce houses, train rides, craft vendors and more. There will also be kids interactive games (4:30pm), cake cutting with free cake while supplies last (6:30pm), live music by Paul Revere and the Raiders &7pm) and fireworks (9pm). Davie residents can also “go green” on the 4th by supporting the new Town of Davie Clothing, Shoes and Textile Recycling Program. Bring a plastic bag or two (tied) to the event and drop it in the recycling truck or bins with the Town of Davie logo. This new program not only helps the Town’s commitment to environmental compliance, but also helps fund local nonprofits through the Town Community Endowment Fund Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.

▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No alcoholic beverages, guns, or fireworks, including sparklers, are permitted at any time during the event or inside the park. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Neighbors to Celebrate Solstice in the Saddle By Debby Teich

A

s the sun sets during the summer solstice on June 21, a group of neighbors from Southwest Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of summer, as they catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. They will also experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture. “Come and enjoy the sunset with friends or friendly strangers in a very tranquil

setting,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. “We invite everyone to come out to see our lovely park. Everyone is welcome.” The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis which is located in the park. The public art feature reflects both form and function. The main area is shaped like a horseshoe and contains earth berms, stones for seating, a waterfall, fountain and shade trees. A concrete saddle sculpture sits on the western ridge of the berm. It is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would. Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 8pm, leaving just enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets at 8:21pm. Organizers will serve refreshments. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue, just north of Stirling Rd. in Southwest Ranches. It has become a favorite space for residents and visitors to ride their horse; walk their dog; meet some friends and enjoy the surroundings. The park includes riding arenas, trails, a playground, 2 public art features, restroom facilities and a sheltered seating area. Holly Carter is new to Southwest Ranches and has already spent time enjoying the peaceful setting at the park. She plans to attend the celebration. “I have heard so much about the event and I am looking forward to seeing the sun set in the saddle,” said Carter. “It will also be a great opportunity to meet some of my new neighbors.” There is no charge for the event. SI Davie Awards Scholarships to Local Women COMMUNITY NEWS

By Debby Teich

S

oroptimist International of Davie recently recognized and honored two women in the community who are making a difference. They received the Violet Richardson Award and Live Your Dream Award. Soroptimist is an international volunteer-service organization for business and professional women who work together to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The Davie chapter has 40 members that meet at noon on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Blue Moon Diner in Cooper City. The Violet Richardson Award provides a monetary gift to an outstanding youth and the charitable organization where she volunteers. This year’s winner, Jordynn Lurie, is passionate about helping others. During her freshman year, the North Broward Prep High School student started as a peace ambassador with the anti-bullying organization National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment. The following year she created her own club, Dance for the Heart. The club offered dance to children in the community, while bringing (l to r): Crystal Gonzalez and awareness to childhood obesity and its SI Davie Chair physical and emotional effects, such Dianne Aucamp as bullying. In July 2015, Dance for the Heart received 501(c)(3) charity status. This led to the formation of a one hour dance and discussion program that is shared with children, ages 6-12, through local youth organizations. Jordynn received $500 for herself and $250 for Dance for the Heart. “My future goal is to become a doctor, so it makes sense to me to promote health and wellness through dance,” said Jordynn. “My hope is that my med-

ical services won’t be needed for obesityrelated diseases or to heal wounds inflicted because of bullying in the future.” SI’s signature award, the Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards (l to r): SI Davie Chair for Women (forSusan Coyle, Jordynn merly Women’s Lurie, and Opportunity her mother Dana Lurie. Award), is a financial grant to assist women facing challenges and who are the primary source of support for their families and who have overcome obstacles in their lives. This year’s recipient was Crystal Gonzalez. Crystal graduated from Broward College in December 2015 and is currently attending the Chamberlain College of Nursing BSN program. Her goal is to become a registered nurse by 2017. The single mother of two is showing her children that you can do whatever you set your mind and your heart to do. Crystal will receive up to $1,500 per year towards her nursing education. “Even though I have been through a lot, I am more than grateful because I am stronger, wiser and each day I am closer to achieving my dream,” said Crystal. Local Hams to Demonstrate Their Emergency Communication Skills Debby Teich

I

n a real emergency or natural disaster, conventional power and communication grids almost always lose service, often for extended periods. Amateur radio operators (a.k.a. “hams”) fill this void by volunteering their time and equipment to operate from emergency sites and relay messages from the disaster area. On June 25 and 26 at Markham Park, the public is invited to see local hams demonstrate their emergency communication skills, as they operate portable stations throughout Broward County. The Davie/ Cooper City Amateur Radio Club, along with the Broward Amateur Radio Club, will host Field Day at the park’s main corporate pavilion (look for the 70-foot crane used as an antenna support). American Radio Relay League’s Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the U.S. More than 35,000 radio amateurs will gather at remote locations with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate their portable Field Day stations without using commercial electric power. The goal is to contact other amateur stations using only emergency power - batteries, solar cells or gas generators. There will also be plenty of visiting and picnicking, as well as demonstrations of various aspects of amateur radio, including “Get-On-The-Air” stations that allow the general public to make radio contacts around the world. “Field Day is a great opportunity to meet and talk with the ham radio operators,” said Harold Fine, who has a attended the past two years. There are over 7,000 active Amateur Radio clubs in the U.S. Most, including the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club (call sign: NA4DC), are ARRL-affiliated amateur radio clubs. Established in 2010, the Davie/Cooper City club has approximately 100 members. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, at 7:30pm, at

Moose Lodge, 4483 SW 64th Avenue in Davie. Licensed amateur radio operators and prospective amateurs are welcome to join. Annual dues are only $10. It is a “radio active” club, which means members operate as much as they can. They arrange monthly outings to make high frequency contacts, host a bi-weekly 2m net, participate in the Amateur Radio Relay League’s annual “Field Day,” and occasionally operate special events. Every other Thursday, at 7pm, the club holds a technical assistance net on one of the local repeaters. Hams can ask for assistance with any technical issues they are having with equipment and installation and the other net members try to assist. The Amateur Radio Service is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. Licensing is required and ensures that people operate correctly, safely and within the rules that govern amateur radio. Anyone can be licensed as an amateur, as long as they are not an official representative of a foreign government. Students do not need any real knowledge of radio, physics, electronics or radio operation. They do not even need their own radio, which can range in cost from $100 to $10,000. For information on the Davie/Cooper City Amateur Club, visit www.dcarc.club.

Residents Celebrate Cooper City’s 57th Anniversary Community News

By Debby Teich

Town of Davie Appoints Julie Downey as Fire Chief by Debby Teich

L

ast month, the Town of Davie promoted Julie Downey, a member of its fire rescue department, to serve as Davie Fire Rescue Chief. She is the first female fire chief to be appointed in Broward County in a field that is heavily maledominated. Chief Downey’s accomplishments in the area of emergency management and program advancement have been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally. She will be officially sworn in during a badge-pinning ceremony at the June 8th council meeting. “Chief Downey is overwhelmingly supported and recognized for her credentials, command presence, equitable leadership style, technological advancements, and interpersonal skills,” said Town Administrator Richard J. Lemack. “She is a respected leader in the fire service and has been instrumental in advancing our department to have state of the art equipment, training and apparatus incorporating cost savings.” Chief Downey, a Davie resident, has served 34 years in the fire rescue service and has been with the Town of Davie for the past 12 years in the capacity of Battalion Chief and Assistant Fire Chief. Her certifications and professional memberships have helped prepare her for the job. She has earned degrees in Organizational Leadership, Nursing, Fire Sciences, and Emergency Management. Chief Downey has authored mass casualty incident procedures, EMS protocols, and numerous grants. She has lectured at conferences, instructs, and is appointed to task forces. As fire chief, Downey will oversee approximately 175 firefighter/paramedics. Chief Downey succeeds Davie Fire Rescue Chief and Emergency Manager Joseph Montopoli, who passed away unexpectedly in February at the age of 57. He was a 35 year veteran in the fire rescue service. Deputy Chief Michael Malvasio became acting chief, until his recent retirement. Downey was most recently Davie’s assistant fire chief. they are small and more manageable and therefore much easier to treat. Another great benefit of early dental visits is to ensure that patients are brushing well and taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay. At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is when the first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come. We offer special infant toothbrushes with unique handles to our patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age. Is thumb sucking a problem? Thumb sucking and pacifiers provide comfort and a sense of security for many babies. Both are a common way to self sooth. If thumb sucking continues beyond two to three years of age, it may cause malpositioning of the teeth and future discrepancies in the child’s bite. Such habits should be discussed with your pediatric dentist. At what age do most children start losing their teeth? Most children begin to lose their first tooth around the age of six, but every child is different and sometimes it is sooner or later than six years of age. Do you offer sedation dentistry? For children that have dental anxiety, we offer different types of sedation techniques to help them have a more pleasant dental visit. These techniques include nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation, which is administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist. We employ the safest and most effective sedation standards by following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. At what age should parents bring their children for the first time? One year of age is the ideal time to bring in your child for their first dental visit to establish a dental home, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Visits are complimentary for children under the age of two. Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits create the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff. This helps to create familiar and comfortable dental visits. Also, early visits help detect cavities when

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Progesterone Should be Included in Hormone Replacement Therapy By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

I

n order to be healthy, one needs to be hormonally balanced. As people begin to age; however, hormone production diminishes. Women entering the menopause phase begin to experience hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain and low libido as a result of the hormonal imbalance, because the ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone. In addition to the uncomfortable symptoms, the decrease in hormonal levels can cause osteoporosis as estrogen influences the way the body uses calcium. Many women choose to do Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to deal with the uncomfortable symptoms, but there are other benefits to HRT, including lowered risks of diabetes and colon cancer. HRT is a complicated topic and it’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of treatment. HRT should be Bio-Identical, as this provides those suffering from PMS, Peri and Post Menopause symptoms a more natural alternative to synthetic hormones such as premarin and progestin. In addition, doctors may prescribe an estrogen-only therapy to their patients or a combination of estrogen and progesterone or progestin. The use of progesterone in addition to estrogen has been subject to debate and research. Women on hormone therapy are typically prescribed a combination of estrogen and progesterone, but those who do not have a uterus are placed on estrogen-only therapy. The reason for this is that the progesterone protects against the risk of endometrial cancer (which originates in the uterus) that is presented by the use of estrogen alone. Studies have shown, however, that regardless of whether a woman has a uterus or not, HRT should include progesterone as well. A recent article published in Anti-Aging Medical News, the official magazine of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, points out that adequate levels of progesterone are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, heart disease, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. In addition, progesterone has been found to promote the viability of neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The article concludes that even though all types of hormone replacement treatments are safe and effective, there is added benefit in using progesterone regardless of whether a woman has a uterus or not. With the increased popularity of hormone replacement services, your primary care doctor’s office might not be the best place to help you decide if this treatment is right for you. It is important to work with a qualified professional to ensure safety and efficacy. The study of hormones is complicated and requires extensive training, because altering hormones will trigger reactions in the body and also change other hormones. If done correctly, it can improve quality of life. As a functional medicine practice, Bellissimo Medical specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Our team of medical experts design individualized programs specifically for each patient. Bio-identical hormones, also known as natural hormones, are substances that have the same chemical structure as the hormones that are produced by the human body. They can be administered in the form of creams, pills, and or pellets. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Bellissimo Medical is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston. For information, visit www.BellissimoMedical.com.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 06/30/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Local Teen to Participate in Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders

By Debby Teich

This month, Savannah Tricomi of Davie will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts as a delegate of the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of the event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Savannah, who is a 9th grader at Archbishop McCarthy High School, was nominated by the winner of the first Google Science Fair, Shree Bose – Academic Director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists - to represent based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. “I think STEM is important, because it gives students the ability to focus on areas of interest that can lead to scholarships and successful careers,” said Savannah, who plans to use her STEM skills to become an engineer after graduating college. “It also empowers the youth of today to aim for higher achievements in math, science and technology.” During the three-day Congress, Savannah will Savannah Tricomi join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading scientific research; be given advice from deans of the world’s top tech universities; be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology.

“The Congress will give me an opportunity to learn new things and meet peers that are interested in the same areas as I am,” said Savannah. “I am also really looking forward to the amazing speakers that are participating in the conference, especially Buzz Aldrin.” Savannah enjoys a variety of activities both in and out of school. At Archbishop, she participates in several clubs, including National Junior Honor Society, and is a member of Color Guard. She has also been involved in many community service projects, volunteers at local charities, and has been a Sun-Sentinel Kid of Character for kindness. The Academy was founded on the belief that STEM education plays a critical role in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace of the 21st century and that we must identify prospective talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of vital careers. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more nimble-minded and creative scientists and technologists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Savannah Tricomi are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” For information, visit www.scitechleaders.com.

Cobras Travel Basketball Team Is #1 in the State By Debby Teich

sports news

B

ased in Cooper City, the Cobras travel basketball team recently clinched the number one spot in the state. This month, they will compete in Ft. Meyers for the State Championship. Head coach Mike Brant, who has been coaching basketball for almost 20 years, started the Cobras in late 2013 as a fourth grade team. They are now in the third season, competing at the 6th grade level. There are 10 kids on the team and many of them live in Davie and Cooper City. The majority play for their middle school teams. “Our program gives them the opportunity to play with other highly-skilled players and to compete against other very talented kids,” said Brant. “Beyond the physical fitness aspect, the kids learn so many invaluable lessons that will help them be successful throughout their lives, both as individuals and as part of a team” Brant says he focuses on helping each player improve as an individual, as well as a team player. “My goal is to help each one of them become better basketball players as individuals, and to help them see how good they can be if they play as a team and play the game “the right way.”’ Most of the team’s tournaments are in South Florida. This past season, the team also played two tournaments in the Ft. Myers area and one in Orlando. Last year, the team finished with a record of 21-13. Brant says that this year’s team has worked well together.

“We have a really good group of kids this season who have really become good friends and enjoy playing together,” said Brant. “It shows on the court by how well they play together and how they work as a team. At different times this season, every one of the ten players has stepped forward and made plays to lead our team and they don’t give up. Even if we have a bad game or a bad half, they come right back and play even harder the next time out.” The Cobras achieved the number one ranking among approximately fifty 6th grade teams that competed in the state of Florida in Youth Basketball of America. They were ranked number one after competing at the King of the Coast tournament championship in Ft. Meyers. This was the team’s third championship in four tournaments. Tyler Brant, 12, has been on the team for the past three years. He hopes to play in high school, college and even the NBA. “Basketball is the most fun sport,” said Tyler. “You can always keep improving at playing the game. I love to score points and help set up my teammates.” Stewart Clough, 12, has also been on the team for the past three years. “I love playing basketball and being part of the Cobras,” said Stewart. “The way that we play together as a team has helped us become so much better this year. All the hard work and effort paid off at the Ft. Myers tournament when were ranked #1.”

Ready for Spring? Asthma Season is Approaching Asthma affects 22 million Americans. Anyone can develop asthma, and it may occur at any age. However, people with a family history of asthma are at Frank Eidelman, MD increased risk, as well as individuals with allergies. With spring bringing allergy season, those afflicted with asthma may suffer increased symptoms, including; chest tightness, difficulty breathing, frequent coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. According to Frank Eidelman, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida allergy and immunologist, “Not every person with asthma experiences symptoms in the same way, and you may have different symptoms at different times.” Asthma is a problem in the airways. “Inflammation is the main cause for the

airways of a person with asthma to become very sensitive, and as a result react to “triggers.” Contact with these triggers brings on asthma symptoms,” states Dr. Eidelman. An important part of asthma control is avoiding common triggers, such as; viral infections, allergens (dust mites, pollens, pets, mold spores, etc.), tobacco smoke, air pollution and changes in weather. Asthma can be controlled, but not cured. Having frequent symptoms or difficulty completing tasks is not normal, and Dr. Eidelman urges “good asthma control will stop these symptoms and end visits to the emergency room.” In addition to avoiding triggers, properly using medication prescribed by your doctor is critical for good asthma control. There are two main types of asthma medications; anti-inflammatories, which should be taken on a regular basis, as they reduce swelling and mucus production in the airways and

Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.

bronchodilators, which should be taken on an as-needed basis, as they relax the muscle bands that tighten around the airways, which improves breathing. Based on the severity of your asthma, an action plan will be developed by your physician. This plan will include use of asthma medications (with a number one goal of reducing inflammation), actions to take when asthma worsens, and when to seek emergency care. By learning to manage your asthma, you take an important step toward living free of symptoms and maintaining a normal, healthy life.

I would have greater opportunities to grow and maintain wealth if I look beyond the short term and immediate satisfaction strategies which have a strong appeal in our society,” said de la Fé. De la Fé credits three honors level classes at Archbishop McCarthy for the solid foundation he believes helped his essay win first in Florida: Business and Entrepreneurship, Business and Finance Technology, and Social Entrepreneurship. “Teaching Financial Literacy provides students a foundation to enter the world of business and make educated financial decisions following high school and college,” said Kim Zocco, who teaches Businesses and Entrepreneurship. While creating a top performing $100,000 portfolio in the Stock Market Game program is difficult, creating a top performing essay in the InvestWrite competition is even harder. During the fall semester, almost 9,000 students wrote essays and 3,612 of those were written at the high school level. Since the program began, 187,094 students have written essays. Andres’ writing assignment included researching the job responsibilities of a capital markets analyst, discussing the most important characteristics of a longterm investment strategy, selecting two Photo (l to r): Kim Zocco, Businesses and Entrepreneurship Teacher at investments and explaining the analysis Archbishop McCarthy High School; Andres de la Fé; and Kevin Lydon, Associate Vice President and Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley. used and rationale for investment decisions,

He won first place in the Florida High School InvestWrite® student essay competition sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association SIFMA Foundation. The competition serves as a culminating activity for nearly 600,000 students nationwide who compete in The Stock Market Game™ each year. “I learned about long term investments and realized

Kevin Lydon, Associate Vice President and Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley, presented de la Fé with a certificate, trophy and gift card. He also congratulated Zocco on teaching a 1st place State of Florida winner. Zocco says she is continually searching for ways to get her students excited about finance. “I have always tried to implement some type of extracurricular challenge that has a competitive component,” said Zocco. “We haven’t won all that we have participated in over the last four years, but we have done quite well along the way. More importantly, the kids have had a positive and fun learning experience in financial literacy.” In 2013, the school and four students won 2nd place in PwC’s Financial Literacy contest. Last year, one of the school’s teams won the top 12 placement in the Wharton School of Business “Investment Challenge” and was invited to the university to present their investment strategy to a panel of Wharton professors, financial analysts from Aberdeen Investments and Multimillionaire Jack Abraham. “That was the ultimate real-world experience for the students... and the teacher for that matter,” said Zocco.

Student Artists Capture the Images of the Everglades

school news

By Debby Teich

M

uch of Broward County is surrounded by canals and waterways, which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. In celebration of Earth Day, students were asked to take a close look at their environment and capture the images on paper for the 10th Annual Everglades Eyes Children’s Art Competition. The winners were recently announced at an award’s ceremony at the Old Davie School Historical Museum, where the artwork was also on display. The competition is a partnership between Central Broward Water

Control District’s outreach program and Old Davie School Historical Museum. It was open to all 4th and 5th grade students who attend Broward County public and private schools, and 62 individual are artists sharing their artwork in the Everglades Eyes children’s art exhibit at the Museum. The artists are students at Embassy Creek Elementary School, Flamingo Elementary School, Griffin Elementary School, and St. Mark Catholic School. They are provided training and guidance by art teachers Ellen Morrison, Wendi Librach, Susan Hall and Carol Powell. The students expressed themselves in oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic painting, pencil drawings, mixed media, photography and collage. All of the artwork was original and included a wide variety of images from the Everglades. A distinguished group of local community leaders and art lovers judged the artwork.

The winners were: ▸▸ First Place: Jackson Burd of Griffin Elementary School for “Life in the Everglades” ($50) ▸▸ Second Place: Zoe Petroiany of Embassy Creek Elementary for “Enchanted Everglades” ($35) ▸▸ T hird Place: Sophia Nesselroth of Embassy Creek Elementary School for “Pinelands” ($25) ▸▸ Honorable Mentions: Adaline Segrera of St. Mark Catholic School for “Everglades Resident” and Connie Rijos of Flamingo Elementary School for “Cruising Through the Everglades” “Every year we see more art entries and more talent,’ said Constance Ruppender, CBWCD Special Projects & Outreach Coordinator. “It’s so rewarding for us to see the community support these young artists and it’s a great way to spread our message that ‘Canals Connect Us!’”

Western Students Give Back During Firewall’s Serve-A-Thon By Debby Teich

group of Western High School students recently participated in Firewall’s 3rd Annual Serve-A-Thon presented by Regent Bank. During the hands-on event, the students had an opportunity to learn the value of giving back, as they spent the day restoring the Ann Storck Center in Fort Lauderdale, where nearly 300 children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities live. “What a privilege to see over 400 kids and volunteers serving our community,” said Giselle Bayona, vice president/commercial loan officer of Regent Bank and a Firewall Centers’ board member. “These kids are the future of our country. It is so important to teach them how to serve others in order to become great leaders.” Wearing “You Got Served” shirts, the Western students sanded and painted the playground fence at the Center. They were part of a larger effort that included over 400 Firewall Centers’ students, their mentors, staff, and volunteers. Students from other schools mulched trails, painted picnic tables and

In total, Serve-A-Thon raised $65,000, with nearly $20,000 coming from Serve-A-Thon’s headlining sponsor, Regent Bank. n less than three years, the robotics team at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy has grown from a small group of students interested in robotics to an awardwinning team. Twenty-nine students compete against public and private high schools from all over South Florida. At the State Championship in Tampa, the Maverick robotics team won the top prize for its Programming Design Journal, which required a seven inch binder to hold the 950 pages of instruction. As a result, the students received their second invitation to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, as well as a cash prize for the team. The VEX Robotics World Championship is the largest international competitive robotics program in the world with over 1,000 teams participating from 41 different countries. NSU University School Students Investigate a “Crime” Scene By Debby Teich

W

school news

hat was the cause and time of death? Who committed the crime? Students in the Forensic Science AT class at NSU University School were searching for the answers as they investigated the staged crime scene that was part of their final exam. During the investigation, the students analyzed indoor and outdoor crime scenes that contained the following evidence: blood/blood spatter analysis, hair/fiber analysis, forensic geology, forensic toxicology, ballistics, fingerprinting, and more. After collaborating with their peers, they prepared a final report and presented their findings to the district attorney. There are 30 students in the advanced science elective class. Students learn how crime scenes are investigated, how to maintain a chain of custody for evidence collected, and how to collect and process various kinds of evidence. They study everything from analyzing a bite mark to determining if

a document is genuine or fake. The class also includes visits from guest speakers and forensic professionals, as well as the Broward County Crime Scene van. “This is a hands-on course where students apply what they learn,” said Arnold I. Miller, founder, author and instructor of Forensic Science AT. “We try to make the course as realistic as possible.” Most of the students in the class, including 18-year-old Rachel Dickinson, plan to enter the fields of Medicine, Health, Criminal Justice and Law. Dickinson plans to study Forensics, Criminal Justice, Intelligence, and other related fields. “The class gave us an introduction to a subject that most people only know about from TV,” said Dickinson. “The

labs and crime scene were very handson. We were able to use the real materials and techniques that professionals use, allowing us to get a taste of what true forensics involves. There are more aspects to crime scenes and crime scene processing than what is portrayed by television shows.” Although 18-year-old Rachel Fleischman plans to study pharmacy, she took the class to explore the possibility of an alternate path. “I took this class to expand my knowledge of crime scene investigations,” said Fleischman. “I learned how to lift fingerprints using the fumes of super glue and how to test what blood type a sample of blood is. The class shows examples of real jobs that students may want in their future.”

Uniting (Broward) We Stand

P

arents can teach their children many things, such as how to read a book or tie their own shoes. They can also be great role models so kids will learn to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and always buckle up in the car. Another important lesson that parents can educate children about is the importance of sun safety.

All children, regardless of skin color, need to be sun smart, but some need to take extra precautions, including those who have fair skin, spend a lot of time outside, have a family history of skin cancer or have certain diseases such as lupus. In just a few quick lessons children can learn good sun sense. Here’s how: Lesson 1: Apply plenty of waterproof or water resistant sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and then again every two hours. Make sure it is broad spectrum (protects against both ultraviolet (UV) A and UVB rays) and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, nose, lips and tops of feet. Lesson 2: Cover up with protective clothing, such as a longsleeve shirt, pants and a hat that shades the face, scalp, ears and neck. Lesson 3: Have children wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from UV rays. Choose sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. Encourage kids to wear sunglasses by wearing them yourself, and let your child pick out a fun style they like. Lesson 4: Try to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when rays are strongest. If children want to be outside, encourage them to seek shade when possible under a tree, umbrella or tent. Don’t forget that children can still get sunburn even if they are in the water or it is a cloudy day.

If your child does get sunburn, have them take a cool bath to alleviate heat and an anti-inflammatory medication to lessen pain. To relieve additional discomfort, apply a topical moisturizing cream to rehydrate the skin and treat itching. For your free sunscreen, call 866-498-LIFE (5433).

ask the sheriff

By Sheriff Scott Israel

T

he Broward Sheriff’s Office is thriving; violent crime has plummeted since 2012; morale is up; and transparency and accountability have never been greater. Yet our successes are not ours alone. Thanks to our Uniting Broward initiative, citizens from all walks of life are playing a critical role in keeping our communities safe by providing vital input, innovative ideas and key support. Together, we’re building bridges and opening up new channels of dialogue through this progressive and ground-breaking program, which actively unites Broward’s diverse communities together by better understanding the special things that make us different. By uniting neighbors to work together, we can find local solutions to local issues and achieve public safety goals. Our county’s 1.8 million residents are comprised of people from many races, religions and cultures, each with different needs. I realize there is no one-size-fits-all approach to public safety, especially in a minority-majority county like ours. That is why I have made it one of my top priorities to bridge the gap between communities and law enforcement by earning your trust and extending the lines of communication. My message to you: I hear you loud and clear and your opinions matter. With the community’s input, we have made significant strides in reshaping the mission of BSO as an agency determined to be proactive rather than reactive. BSO has proven this by implementing high-profile initiatives, such as the progressive body-worn camera and civil citation programs. Yet equally important is Uniting Broward—an initiative that has already led to a transformational shift in community policing and has provided a voice to the once voiceless. Since becoming sheriff, I have made it a point to be front and center, interacting with members of the community and listening to their concerns firsthand. In addition, BSO has played an active role in scores of community events for important organizations that share ideas and information for Broward’s varied communities. We have also forged strong partnerships with the vast and diverse communities of faith through our Department of Community Outreach and the chaplain’s office. As a member of a blended family of Jewish and Christian faiths, religion plays an important role in my life. While the beliefs of various religions may differ, I know they all strive to strengthen society and humanity. I have learned through my attendance at many different religious services and secular events, what matters to each community and how best to respond. The spirit of inclusion also runs deep throughout the agency. While we hire and promote our hardworking men and women based on their talents and abilities, we encourage ethnic pride, religious heritage and cultural inclusiveness. We also recognize and celebrate the positive impact of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Join me as we celebrate diversity, safety and security at the Uniting Broward event, from 10am - 3pm, on June 11, at Miramar Regional Park. The event is an exciting opportunity for law enforcement and residents to listen understand and build connections. The celebration will include demonstrations from the Aviation Unit, K-9, SWAT Team, Fire Rescue, Bomb Squad and Police Athletic League Boxing Program. BSO is much more than a law enforcement agency; we’re part of the community. By working together to teach, inspire and motivate each other, we all do our part in Uniting Broward. I

t is true that for many years braces have been as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically in recent time. In 2010, the American Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s. One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a concern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment. Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know that as I approached 30, I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.” This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created that are dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plastered local advertising with new technologies in turning back the effects of time. From the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of Invisalign, has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients. Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages as well as challenges with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be possible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Reasons for an increased length of treatment time range from the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, or a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease. The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or other dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accomplish these goals. In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you desire improving your smile and having teeth that fit together comfortably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Alimony Reform? Not This Year! By Evan Baron

U

ntil approximately one week ago, I was expecting to write this month’s article on the changes in Family Law that would be taking effect as of October 1, 2016. For the second time in four years, the Florida Legislature had passed a bill which would have modified the current alimony laws in this state; and for the second time in four years Governor Scott has vetoed the bill. The result is that everything remains the same and the proposed laws that were passed by the legislature are forgotten, at least until 2017; when they reconvene. The reason the Governor gave for vetoing the alimony reform bill four years ago was due to the fact that it contained a retroactive clause. This would have allowed individuals, who were either ordered to pay or agreed to pay permanent alimony, to go back into court and seek either a termination or reduction based upon the change in the law. The Governor indicated that if in fact that provision was removed in the future he would in fact pass an alimony reform bill. This year, the retroactive provision was in fact removed, but the legislature added a time sharing provision, which would have resulted in an equal time sharing presumption when there are minor children involved. Currently, there is no such presumption, although it is very common that Mothers and Fathers do have equal time sharing with minor children. In spite of what many individuals believe because of their independent research on the internet, there is no such equal time sharing presumption in Florida today. Each case is considered independently and the Court is to consider the best interests of the children. In exercising his veto power, Governor Scott indicated that he felt the equal time sharing provision did not protect the interests of the children. Obviously, the issue of alimony reform is controversial. Individuals who are not directly involved in an alimony case may not have an opinion about this matter. Those that are receiving permanent alimony or may potentially fall within those who might be required to pay such alimony if divorced may see it differently than those who are receiving or might receive permanent alimony. Those within the legal community are themselves divided as to whether alimony reform is a positive or a negative. I can only advise a client as to what the current law is and not what it may be or should be. As I stated before, every case is different and it is difficult to structure a law which applies to all situations. The one issue which I thought would be beneficial to prospective clients was a formula to calculate the amount of alimony to be paid or received. Currently, there is no alimony guideline in Florida and therefore it is sometimes difficult to advise someone how much alimony may be involved in a particular case. I suspect that this issue will be raised again next year by the legislature, as it seems that some type of reform is inevitable. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Questions Buyers Ask (Part 3) By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor

A

ccording to Realtor.com, there are eight common buyer questions. This is the last of the three questions in the series.

Depending upon financing or sales terms and your closing agent, closings can occur as quickly as two weeks. Offer – Acceptance – Inspections – Clear Title – Clear Survey are just some of the hurdles. When cash is involved, the TRID* rules are not applicable. Therefore, compliance with same is not an issue. According to the FR-BAR contract, even a cash offer turned into a financed or partially financed situation is not affected by TRID.

REAL ESTATE

How quickly can I close?

Should I get a home inspection?

YES. Even if you are purchasing new construction, an experienced agent would highly recommend a full, four-point inspection. Not only will this determine your insurance premiums, it will define what needs to be repaired – especially if you are purchasing the home as-is with “right to inspect.” The contract allows for a calendar-specific inspection period. Your experienced agent will be sure that your inspection is held during that time so that you will know what you are facing as far as repairs that need to be made. Sometimes repairs must be made to comply with financing specifications. New construction builders often offer a thirty-day punch list wherein a buyer can keep a list for the builder to fix all that is determined unacceptable for the first thirty days of homeownership.

When can I back out if I change my mind?

After viewing a number of available properties (our inventories are at another all-time low), buyers rarely change their minds. The chance that a better or lower-priced opportunity becomes available is rare in our current market. The work involved in selecting the property . . . making the offer, negotiating, and the acceptance of that offer by the Sellers, in an often-times “multiple-bid” situation, is intense for all involved. However, your Real Estate agent keeps a deadline calendar once your contract becomes fully executed. This calendar outlines the window in which a buyer can get out of a contract without the penalty of jeopardizing his deposit monies or leaving him subject to litigation by the seller. An experienced agent keeps the buyer informed of each and every deadline prior thereto. It is imperative that these deadlines are met to avoid trouble for both parties. Some experienced agents have a team of individuals who assist the agent with deadline dates to make sure they are met by the parties. This creates a checks-and-balance system so that all are on the same page – leading to a successful Closing. Homeownership still beats renting hands-down. Every three years the Federal Reserve conducts a Survey of Consumer Finances in which they collect data across all economic and social groups. The latest survey, which includes data from 2010-2013, reports that a homeowner’s net worth is 36 times greater than that of a renter ($194,500 vs. $5,400). In a Forbes article, the National Association of Realtors’ (NAR) Chief Economist Lawrence Yun predicts that in 2016 the net worth gap will widen even further to 45 times greater. If you are a sitting-on-the-fence buyer, renting or waiting to upsize or downsize, these facts should convince you to get off the fence NOW.

Davie Update ask the mayor

By Mayor Judy Paul

T

he Town has officially started our 2017 budget process. The kick off was the Vision and Goal Setting Session held on April 7 at Robbins Lodge. The intense seven hour meeting set forth our goals and priorities for the next year and established some guidelines on projects that will be important to the Town as we move forward. I am proud to announce that as of April 30, upon the retirement of Deputy Chief Michael Malvasio, Assistant Fire Chief, Julie Downey has been appointed acting fire chief for the Town of Davie. Chief Downey has had an extraordinary career in Davie and is highly respected among her peers and administration. On June 12, the town will partner with Friends of the Davie Farm Park and Project Stable to bring you the 3rd annual Animal Fashion Show and Horse Show. Registration for the Animal Fashion Show will begin at 9 a.m. at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The show will start at 10 a.m. and the public is welcome to attend. There is no charge for spectators. See handlers show off their pets in some of the wildest costumes. Cats, dogs, rabbits, goats, ponies, horses, pigs, and more will be dressed up for one of the cutest shows ever. Our guest judge will be Darlene Evans from KISS Country FM. The horse show will begin at noon and will feature 4H classes as well as time and games. On April 10, I attended Temple Beth Emet’s Mitzvah Day and addressed the crowd about their role in the community doing good deeds for those in need. Parents and children volunteered for a multitude of charity organizations. One that struck a chord with me was Matt’s Mitzvah project, which is to support SHARE (Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort, Inc.) This nonprofit’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving homes for German Shepherd dogs in the tri-county area. Matt rescued Shaina last October and they have a wonderful bond. Participating in Relay for Life, The Temple Beth Emet team raised $22,000 to fight cancer and came in first place of all the teams with individual contributions. They did it without corporate sponsors. Just think what they will do next year! I was proud to attend the latest CERT graduation at the Fire Administration building on April 12. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. Keep posted with the Davie web site and sign up for the next class. It is an experience that you will never forget. The Davie Town Council along with the Town Administrator hosted a series of Community Forums in each of the Town’s four Districts. All Davie residents and business owners were invited and encouraged to attend. Topics discussed included: ▸▸ Presentation of the Town’s Fiscal Condition and Five-Year Forecast ▸▸ Presentation of Town-wide and District projects ▸▸ Q&A - moderated by the Town Administrator If you have any news to share with me or wish to contact me with your interests or concerns, please call my office at 954-797-1030 or by email to jpaul@davie-fl.gov.
