Can You Feel the Heat?
T
he heat is on for parents to keep the kids entertained. It seems their level of summer boredom is soaring along with the heat and humidity. While we struggle to find meaningful things for our kids to do, we should not forget that summers are meant to spend quality time together as a family. All of us are busy in our career and professional lives and sometimes we simply need to sit back and remember why we are working so hard. Our children are the core of our family life and their bored expressions these days remind us to head out for one of those great American traditions -- the family summer vacation. So let’s turn off the smartphones, tablets and laptops for a few days, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend some time together. Whether you enjoy a picnic at the beach, take an airboat trip into the Everglades, play a board game, see a movie together, or simply jump in the pool and just chill out in the back yard, the important thing is to do it as a family. Those quality moments together are what we and our kids will remember for years to come. So let’s enjoy the heat and each other.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia are varied and may include chronic muscle pain, painful joints, stiffness, numbness, or tingling. In addition, some may experience tension or migraine headaches, sensitivity to light or smells, and in more severe cases, depression and chronic fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is not a psychological condition. Recent research suggests that changes in the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) may be responsible. As we age, the vertebral joints of the spine begin to degenerate and can press on the roots of the spinal nerves, causing the classic symptoms of fibromyalgia. It can also result from traumatic injuries, infections, diabetes, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins.

rea residents will have an opportunity to show off their singing talents and participate in other fun activities at the 3rd Annual Downtown Hoedown. The event, which is presented by the Town of Davie and the South Florida Cloggers, will be held on July 25, from 11am to 2pm, at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Come for family fun and stay for a good ol’ fashion country hoedown, games and entertainment. One of the highlights of the event is the “Davie Idol” singing contest, which kicks off an hour before the official start of the Hoedown. Participants of all ages will sing a song to their own back track. Celebrity judges will select the top three contestants, who will then sing for the first place spot during the Hoedown. The cost is $20. Prizes will be awarded to the winner. During the Hoedown, guests will also enjoy performances by the awardwinning South Florida Cloggers, a Davie group that has become well known throughout the country. They have performed in the Macy’s Day Parade at Universal Studios and twice at Disney World; received two invitations to audition for America’s Got Talent; performed at the Hollywood Hard Rock Café, and much more. The South Florida Cloggers meet at Robbins Lodge. It is a family atmosphere, with students that range in age from 2 to 80. During the season, from

The Hoedown also includes mechanical bull riding, carnival games, a silent auction, raffles, bounce houses, lunch, petting zoo, pony rides, dunk tank and more. Every 30 minutes, a drawing will reveal the name of a South Florida Clogger, who will go in the dunk tank. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children. This includes entrance to the Hoedown, a hot dog dinner and all activities. The proceeds will be used to help the South Florida Cloggers pay for travel expenses for clogging competitions. Mark Rosen attended the Hoedown last year with his family. “There was something for the whole family and we all had a great time,” said Rosen. We especially enjoyed the Davie Idol and clogging demonstrations.” For information, visit www.SouthFloridaCloggers.com or call 954-347-5207.

Davie Offers Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program By Debby Teich
Community News
In order to qualify for the program, you must be a Davie resident or your horse(s) must live in Davie. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph or it is deemed safe by emergency personnel. Harvey Kaplan of Davie owns a horse and plans to sign up for the program. Although he prefers to keep his horse on his own property during a storm, he will sign up in case there is severe weather. “I have a hurricane plan for my family and it is important to have one for my horse as well,” said Kaplan. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to my horse in a storm. I am happy that the Town has a program and I will certainly use it if necessary.”
avie’s rural character and equestrian lifestyle has attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses are safe in the event that a major storm threatens the area. For the past ten years, the Town has opened a 100-acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area when a hurricane warning has been issued. The Town has already begun accepting pre-registration applications for the Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program. The fee is $40 (from June 1 to November 30) per horse. Applications are available online at www.davie-fl.gov.

or more than 50 years, Barbie has been a cultural icon. She has evolved with the times and kept up with the latest trends, and is still as popular as ever. Today, a Barbie doll is purchased every three seconds somewhere in the 150 countries where they are sold. On July 18, from 2 to 4pm, the public is invited to enjoy tea and treats with Barbie and her friends, at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. The event sells out every year. This year’s theme is “Enchanted Forest.” The tables will be set with fine linens, china and Barbie centerpieces, as guests enjoy tea, and sweet delights. There will be a Barbie fashion show, photo ops, coloring, raffle prizes and more. Live Barbie dolls will model the latest Barbie fashions, pose for photos and sign autographs. Young girls are encouraged to come dressed in their finest dresses, shoes and tiaras. They can even bring their Barbie dolls along to participate in the festivities. “It’s a wonderful way to spend quality time with your favorite girl, especially if she is a fan of Barbie,” said Executive Director Leslie Schroeder. “It makes for a delightful afternoon of fun and friendship amidst the charm of Old Davie School.” Eight-year-old Rachel Evans of Davie plans to attend. She has 12

Ovarian Cancer: What you need to know Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent gynecologic cancers. Q: What is ovarian cancer? A: Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in a woman’s ovaries. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women.
Q: What causes ovarian cancer? A: The cause is not yet known; however, risk factors include: • a family history of ovarian cancer • over the age of 50 (risk factors increase as you age) • carrying the BRCA gene mutation, which increases a woman’s risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers

HOPE Outreach’s Canstruction Event Helps Fight Hunger Community News
By Debby Teich
R
eports estimate that one in six Broward County residents suffer from hunger. Last month, Davie-based nonprofit HOPE Outreach Center did its part to help put a lid on hunger. HOPE hosted Canstruction, a unique and creative event in which teams from local businesses built large structures made from over 25,000 canned goods. After the creations were assessed by a panel of judges, all of the cans were donated to local food pantries for distribution throughout the county. “We are gratified and delighted by the reaction to our first Canstruction event,” said Helen Shinners, Executive Director of HOPE Outreach Center. “The creativity and enthusiasm were extraordinary, but equally important was the spirit of camaraderie from all our teams and the enormous boost of food for the local food pantries.” The HOPE Outreach Center offers an immediate “hand up” to people in the community who find themselves suddenly unable to make ends meet due to: job loss, disability, health crisis, and/ or some other emergency circumstance. Last year alone, the HOPE (an acronym for Helping Other People Everyday) Outreach Center provided 100 tons of food to Broward County residents. According to Shinners, the contest is well timed. In the summer, donations to the pantry typically diminish, while demand increases because children no longer have access to free and reduced

school meal programs. With the influx of 25,372 cans of food, ranging from vegetables to meat to fruits and grains, Canstruction boosted the coffers of the following local pantries: LifeNet4Families, HOPE Outreach Center, Soref JCC WE CARE, Pantry of Broward and Love Thy Neighbor. In addition, the event drew thousands of visitors and made a real impact in increasing awareness of the hunger issues right here in Broward County. The winners were: ▸▸ Judge’s Favorite: Bokamper’s giant hamburger ▸▸ Most Cans: Bokamper’s giant hamburger with more than 10,600 cans ▸▸ Honorable Mention: Ultimate Software’s iconic fountain ▸▸ Structural Ingenuity: Lennar Commercial’s city scape ▸▸ Best Use of Labels: Memorial Health Systems’ alligator ▸▸ People’s Choice: Allison James Estates & Homes Elite’s luxury home ▸▸ Best Meal: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s baseball mitt Many of the teams, as well as the Westfield Mall, have committed to participating in Canstruction 2016. What is your background? After graduating
from veterinary school in 1992, my first veterinary clinic was in West Palm Beach. My family and I moved to Weston in 2003, and I’ve been practicing in the area ever since. I am highly experienced in all areas of small animal internal medicine, including radiology, surgery and dentistry. I also have an interest in dermatology, as well as alternative therapies and preventive care.
Please describe your veterinary philosophy. I believe pet owners play an integral role in
the health and wellness of their pets. Pet owners are an important part of the health team, and they should be able to communicate their expectations and needs to the veterinarian. Communication with your vet and vet’s staff is important, especially when it comes to a sick pet. Open communication helps the doctor and pet nurses provide better service to you and your pet.

How To Add Years To Your Life By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette
A
ging can become a speedy process for some individuals, but simple changes in lifestyle can help achieve longevity. In fact, an estimated 37 million premature deaths could be avoided if people could reduce the burden of the following six risk factors, according to researchers: ▸▸ Tobacco use ▸▸ Alcohol use ▸▸ Salt intake ▸▸ Obesity ▸▸ High blood pressure ▸▸ Diabetes An individual who smokes, drinks a lot, is physically inactive and has an unhealthy diet has 2.5-fold higher mortality risk in epidemiological terms than an individual who looks after his/her health. According to a University of Cambridge scientist, people may lose 30 minutes of life expectancy for every two cigarettes they smoke, for being 11 pounds overweight, and for eating an extra portion of red meat daily. The good news is that anyone can add years to their life by changing some bad habits—that is the goal of the functional medicine approach. Scientists have found changes in the following four lifestyle choices will help achieve longevity.

Drinking in moderation can affect your health positively, according to research. Studies show drinking one or two alcoholic beverages a day could help reduce the risk of dementia and lower stroke risk in older adults. Did you know that dark beer contains large amounts of disease-fighting antioxidants? The key is moderation.
Smoking
Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of death. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer death and is responsible for most cancers of the larynx, oral cavity, and esophagus. What’s more alarming is that environmental tobacco smoke is responsible for thousands of cases of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Diet
Eating a healthy diet reduces the risk of aging-related chronic diseases, physical impairment and mental/cognitive issues. Healthy agers were found to follow a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium. Populations living along the Mediterranean Sea are known for having a low incidence of chronic diseases and high life-expectancy rates. Their diets are high in fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and good fats. Red meat is eaten only sparingly.
Exercise
Physical activity is at the top of the anti aging lifestyle pyramid. According to research, poor physical activity in your 50s may raise your risk for an early death. Similarly, a 20-minute walk was found to help stave off major disability and enhance the quality of life of older adults. Exercise reduces the risk of heart disease by improving blood circulation. Implementing these simple lifestyle changes has proved beneficial in prolonging life by reversing heart disease and decreasing the risk of conditions such as cancer, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. At Bellissimo, we specialize on educating patients about how these and other environmental and lifestyle factors influence the emergence and progression of disease and how to avoid it. Schott Communities Clients Model Spring Fashions Community News
By Debby Teich
These are some of the Schott clients that modeled spring fashions.
S
chott Communities recently honored their exceptional clients at a sold-out event to raise funds to support the mission of the organization. During the Models of Inspiration Fashion Show & Luncheon, 34 Schott clients modeled spring fashions. All of the proceeds will be used to support Schott’s programs and services. While nearly 200 guests were enjoying the Silent Auction and Luncheon, Schott clients had their hair and makeup done by ASM Beauty World Academy, and got dressed in clothing provided by Dillard’s of Westfield Mall. Each participant was announced individually as he/she walked down the run way to model their outfits. “This inspiring event celebrated the determination and positive outlook on life of the Schott Communities special needs clients,” said Jerry Cohen, Director of Annual Fund and Stewardship. “Not only were the attendees excited, but the client models were very enthusiastic on the runway and afterwards. They cannot wait to be part of the annual fashion show next year.”
The event raised over $36,500, which will be used for Schott programs and services, such as Art from the Heart, Daily Adult Training, and Schott Saturdays. Next year’s event has already been scheduled for May 6, 2016. Located in Cooper City, Schott Communities’ programs assist participants in developing skills for independent living, promote self-sufficiency, and provide social, recreational and spiritual opportunities to enhance their quality and enjoyment of life. The agency continues to strive to create an environment of caring and dignity for persons who are deaf or disabled by encouraging and challenging them to grow in self-acceptance and independence. For information, call 954-434-3306, send an email to jcohen@schottcommunities.org or visit www. schottcommunities.org.

Cooper City Mothers and Daughters Spend Quality Time Together Community News
By Debby Teich
C
ooper City moms and their daughters, K-5th grade, recently gathered for a Mother-Daughter Tea Party at the Cooper City Community Center. Since 2001, this hometown event has been a way for them to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy a special afternoon together. Many of them return year after year. “The Mother-Daughter Tea continues to be a highly popular event for Cooper City residents,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist. “Mothers and daughters of all ages look forward to taking part in a classic tea party, and this year was no different. It sold out in just two days. From start to finish, you could tell that everyone enjoyed themselves!” This year, approximately 100 residents attended. The group included girls with their mothers, as well as some with their grandmothers. Dressed in party attire, they sampled a variety of teas,
coffee, lemonade, finger sandwiches, and desserts. They used teacups, saucers, sugar bowls, and creamers from authentic tea sets that were borrowed from residents and participants. During the Chinese Auction, they bid on crafts, puzzles, toys, gift certificates from local businesses, and more. Daughters decorated cards and a treat bags for their mothers, and presented them along with a rose. They also made a star garland headband for themselves. All of the mothers and daughters received a keepsake photo of the event. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. Dads had their turn earlier in the year with Father and Son Adventure and the Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance. Grandparent’s Day will be held on September 6 and the Mom-Son Night of Fun will be held on September 18. For information, visit www.coopercityfl.org or call 954434-4300, ext. 233.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 7/31/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $37. p.p.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.
Cooper City Elementary School Receives Peace Pole
SECTION News School HEAD
By Debby Teich
C
ooper City Elementary was one of many schools that participated in Broward County Public School District’s annual Anti-Bullying campaign. This year’s motto was “Choose Peace Stop Violence.” Students at Cooper City Elementary received the District Peace Pole for their efforts. The school held a peace pole dedication ceremony to encourage students to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony throughout the year. According to stopbullying.gov, bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves an imbalance of power and repetition. It includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. It can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The website suggests that the best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. During Anti-Bullying Week, Cooper City Elementary School students demonstrated what peace meant to them. Led by Deputy Gloria Crespo and Guidance
Counselor Linda Signorelli, they participated in skits, wore stickers, acted out roleplaying scenarios, heard stories and watched video clips about anti-bullying. All of the activities were presented live during the WCUB school wide announcements. In addition, during Peace Week the students participated in the Chalk 4 Peace event, where they used sidewalk chalk to demonstrate symbols and messages of peace. They contributed to the Imagine Peace Wish Tree and designed posters that were displayed throughout the campus. They also conducted interviews among their classmates to find out what peace meant to them. Representatives from the School District, Cooper City Commission and the United Way attended the Peace Pole ceremony. Students made pledges to continue promoting peace. The School’s Crime Watch Prevention Team, as well as a student representative from each grade level, spoke about what they were doing to support peace in the school. The Peace Pole was permanently installed at the school to remind students to continue to promote peace at school and home, as well as in the community.

Western Students Give Back During Firewall’s Serve-A-Thon
School News
By Debby Teich
A
group of Western High School students recently participated in Firewall’s 2nd Annual Serve-A-Thon. During the hands-on event, the students had an opportunity to learn the value of giving back, as they spent the day beautifying Davie Pine Island Park and raising funds for Firewall services. “At Firewall, our vision is to transform students into servant leaders,” said Executive Director Andy Fernandez. “One of the core principles we teach our
350 at-risk students is to ‘keep giving back’ - a character trait necessary for their success in school, at home, and in their future workplace. Our Serve-A-Thon gave them a hands-on opportunity to put what they have been taught into action.” Wearing “You Got Served” shirts, the Western students repainted parking lots and landscaped around the main office space, which included planting, mulching, and laying sod. They were part of a larger effort that included over 315 Firewall students from each of its seven centers, as well as their mentors, staff, and volunteers. Serve-A-Thon service projects benefited the Broward Children’s Center, Hope South Florida, and ARC Broward, as well as Davie Pine Island Park. Leadership Broward Foundation organized and facilitated the entire Serve-A-Thon event and all related service projects. In total, the event raised over $80,000, with nearly $31,000 coming from the Serve-A-Thon’s headlining sponsor, Regent Bank. Firewall plans to use the money to open a brand new Center serving a very needy area and school, as well as to grow the number of students served at its current sites. Headquartered in Davie, Firewall Centers is a nonprofit that provides free after-school mentoring, tutoring, and leadership development to low-income middle and high school students at Broward County Schools. The program’s objective is to provide students with the academic and social support they need to transition out of poverty and reach toward their greatest potential. Students learn to T.H.I.N.K. (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back). For information, visit www.firewallcenters. org or follow them at www.facebook.com/ firewallcenters.

In over 30 years of working in law enforcement, I have witnessed the serious harm drugs can do. I have seen the damage they can inflict on individuals, families and communities. The drugs change over time, but the outcomes are always the same. Sadly, a new, very dangerous narcotic has gained a foothold in our communities. Flakka, a synthetic drug, has been showing up in incidents around South Florida. It is the same class of narcotic as bath salts, a drug that rose to national prominence in 2012 due to the intense and erratic behavior it caused the user. In one well known instance, a man using bath salts tried to chew off another man’s face. Flakka is more potent and addictive than its predecessor. Flakka can make someone lose control of their thoughts. It causes hallucinations and what is being called excited delirium, giving the user an adrenaline rush and the belief that they have super human strength. Recently, a man under its influence streaked through traffic. Another man impaled himself on a 14-inch spike trying to scale the wrought-iron fence outside the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

The drug, nicknamed “gravel” due to its granular texture, can be injected, snorted, smoked or swallowed, and its use can be fatal. Once an individual using flakka is restrained, they need immediate medical attention or they could die. The body temperature of someone who ingests flakka will often rise, sometimes over 105 degrees, because their muscle tissues melt and pollute the bloodstream. This can quickly lead to organ failure. Most dangerous about this new drug is that no one knows what’s really in it. The users, ignorant to the strength or substance of what they are taking, are guinea pigs. Our crime lab has seen a 45% increase in flakka cases so far in 2015, compared to all of 2014. As a result, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is working to become better prepared and more aware to combat it in the communities we serve. Sergeants from every district in BSO have received special training to identify and handle suspects alleged to be under the influence of the drug. We are also working with local and federal agencies to share vital information about flakka. Last month, we began holding trainings and community forums for the public to increase knowledge and awareness about the drug. I am confident that the men and women of BSO and our community will work together to confront this challenge and prevent countless individuals from falling victim to this extremely dangerous drug. We have set up an information hotline at 954-375-6237 for questions about the use, abuse or treatment of flakka. If your community or group would like someone to speak about flakka, call 954-321-5076. For information, visit www.sheriff.org.

t is estimated that up to 40% of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms. In about 50% of the cases, cosmetic vein issues are often a sign of treatable underlying circulation issues. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and are often part of a greater circulatory problem. The leg swelling that is often considered to be a problem with the heart or blood pressure is often just veins underneath the skin that have failed to work properly. Symptoms often associated with vein disease include leg pain, discoloration, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, itching, restless leg syndrome, cramping, burning and fatigue. Vein disease is a progressive disease, so symptoms will worsen if left untreated. Varicose veins may indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can be life threatening. A DVT is a blood clot, or thrombus, which typically forms in the calf veins of the leg, but can also develop in the deep veins of the thigh. In addition to the aching in the legs caused by this serious condition, there is also a psychological toll that stems from the appearance of these unsightly veins. Those that suffer from this condition are often too embarrassed and self-conscious to show their legs, which has a tremendous effect on their life-style and overall daily enjoyment of life. Through a relatively simple procedure, using the latest, cutting edge technology, in very little time, you can greatly reduce the symptoms and source of varicose veins. Enodvenous Laser Treatment (EVL) is a quick, minimally invasive laser treatment and does not require hospitalization or complicated surgery. EVL is an FDA-approved procedure in which a small optic fiber is inserted through a needle into the varicose vein, which heats and closes the vein. The entire procedure takes about one hour and causes minimal discomfort. Performed under ultrasound guidance, EVL uses laser energy to treat varicose veins by closing off the vein, preventing it from flowing in the wrong direction down the leg. Your body then naturally uses a multitude of other healthy veins to return blood to the heart. The latest Varicose Vein Treatment, called Foam Sclerotherapy, uses special equipment that helps isolate the affected veins and their origins. The veins are then injected with a mixture air and a solution that causes it to become a foam. This procedure is almost painless, results are immediate, and for most, the results are permanent. The bottom line is that varicose veins and spider veins are treatable. The first step toward treatment is to figure out which type of veins you have. You should see a physician trained in the circulatory system for a thorough consultation and an ultrasound to determine the most effective treatment for you. In addition to making your legs look cosmetically better, vein treatment can actually improve your circulation so that you have healthier legs as well. It’s easier than you think to get yourself back in shorts again for summer! Dr. Soffer is recognized as one of the leading vein experts in the United States and trains physicians from around the world on advanced vein treatment techniques. Soffer Health is a multi-specialty practice that has eight conveniently located offices in South Florida. Soffer Health has specialists in Primary Care, Cardiology, Veins, Allergy and Weight Loss and offices in Aventura, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Doral, Hialeah, North Miami, Southwest Ranches, Deerfield Beach. educing soda from your child’s diet can have the greatest single effect on their dental health. When the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, created a policy to reduce the number of ounces in a large soda sold in his city’s restaurants, he was criticized by some for violating their human rights. The amount of press that this situation received not only illustrates the degree of political divide in this country, but also the love of Americans for their favorite bubbly beverage. It is estimated that between 50 and 80 percent of children in the United States consume at least one serving of soda per day. Some of these children are consuming multiple servings. Just as concerning as the high frequency of soda drinking are the large quantities. For example, the average serving size of soda in the 1950’s was 6.5 ounces. The average size currently is 20 ounces. As we will see, both the increased frequency and quantity of soda consumption have a negative effect on oral health. To understand why we have singled out soda, it is important to consider the factors contributing to the creation of dental caries (or cavities). In order to have a cavity, there needs to be certain cavity causing bacteria in the mouth and an acidic environment. This acidic environment allows for weakening of the surface of the teeth and the eventual colonization of the interior or the tooth by the bacteria. Sweetened soda contains “simple” sugars which are easily broken down by oral bacteria. The byproducts are acidic and lead to the weakening of the surfaces of teeth. What about non-sugared or diet soda? As it turns out, carbonation itself is very acidic having a similar negative effect. Here are a number of strategies to reduce the effects of soda and acid causing foods in general: ▸▸ Limit, or possibly eliminate soda from our diets. Get into the habit of drinking water. Juice and milk have sugar as well. So try to limit their consumption to meal times. ▸▸ Rinse. If soda or any sugar foods are consumed, rinse with water afterwards. Water is very good at neutralizing the acidity levels in the mouth. ▸▸ Read the ingredients. Stay away from foods whose first one or two ingredients is sugar. ▸▸ Use topical fluoride regularly. Topical fluoride hardens the surface of the enamel and helps to reverse the effects of the acids. Fluoride can be gotten from toothpaste, rinses, and professional application. An alternative to fluoride is xylitol. Its mechanism of action is different than fluoride but research of its frequent use is promising. ▸▸ Set a good example. Children are very impressionable and will model most behaviors observed by the adults in their lives. We try to be practical when making recommendations to our families. We do not stress the total removal of all sweet food/drink from the diet. But following the advice above and common sense strategies can make a significant change in our oral health. Remember, consistency is the key and healthy habits are best started early. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 954-236-3434.

Where Are All The Buyers Coming From?
Real Estate
By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor
W
e have experienced such a tight, tight Real Estate market over the past twelve months – and it is only getting tighter. Our market has been on the upswing due to the $92 billion spent by international buyers nationwide. Where were global buyers searching in the United States? Of the top ten U.S. cities searched by international consumers, Fort Lauderdale was listed as number six. The top five states for international buyers were as follows: 1. Florida 23% 2. California 14%
3. Texas 12% 4. Arizona 6% 5. Washington 4% Here are some other facts about South Florida: ▸▸ 80% of international buyers bought previously-owned homes! 81% paid cash in South Florida compared to 31% nationally. ▸▸ The average purchase price of top international buyers was $444,052 in South Florida compared to $245,500 nationally. ▸▸ In Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, 68% of international buyers came from Latin America. 15% are from Venezuela. Argentina and Brazil follow at 11%. ▸▸ According to the Knight Frank Wealth Report 2014, “Top 5 Cities by Region and Top 5 Future Hotspots,” the Miami area ranked No. 2 in North America. ▸▸ Canadians made up the majority of the foreign buyers at 18% in South Florida and 31.6% in Florida overall. Their cities of choice in the United States (in order): Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, and Naples.
PROTECT THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE.
▸▸ Previously, the British visitor has purchased mainly in Orlando because of the direct flight. Thomas Cook Airlines announced direct service linking Miami and Manchester, England, which started in May of this year. This may alter the British buyers’ purchasing choices – from magic kingdom to sunny beaches. If you have been in downtown Miami lately, you might notice the resurgence of the condo market.
LIFE
▸▸ 215 towers with 31,691 units have been announced in the 4 years since 2011 - in Miami-Dade County East of I-95.
AUTO
▸▸ Selling now: 101 projects with 117 towers/17,043 units; 70 percent of units already sold; the price per square foot was $952. Many of these developers are obtaining cash prior to construction to avoid any utterances of a new “bubble.” In fact:
I can help you protect your family and save money too. With the Allstate® Auto/Life Discount, you can save on auto insurance when you protect your family with life insurance. I’ll make it easy to get the quality coverage you need at an affordable price. So why wait? Call me today to put your family in Good Hands®.
▸▸ Approximately 54.2% are cash sales: 38.6% Single Family; 67.3% Condos; New Construction 90%. ▸▸ Single family homes are selling in about 45 days and within 90% of the originally listed price. The median price of a single family home in Broward County is $290,000, up 7.6% over one year ago.
Lisa Faina, CIC, LUTCF 954-437-9220
Even with the new construction, we are experiencing a shortage. Buyers who are ready and willing to make a purchase are entering a market where their dream house may not have been listed yet. “Housing inventory declined from last year and supply in many markets is very tight, which in turn is leading to bidding wars, faster price growth and properties selling at a quicker pace,” says Yun. “To put it in perspective, roughly 40 percent of properties sold last month went at or above asking price, the highest since NAR began tracking this monthly data in December 2012.” List now while the Buyers are hot to purchase.

The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same By Evan Baron
L
ast month, I wrote an article about the anticipated changes in the alimony laws in Florida. This is a movement that has been in progress for several years. In 2013, both the State House and State Senate overwhelmingly passed an Alimony Reform bill, which was vetoed by Governor Scott just before the end of the legislative session. Since 2014 was an election year, the issue was not addressed. This year, however, it was everyone’s expectations that a reform bill would in fact finally be passed. The State House passed their version of the bill, which would have ended Permanent Alimony in this state. In addition, there were other changes in the law, including certain guidelines that could be followed in computing the amount of alimony that could be awarded. The State Senate, however, had its own version of alimony reform. The main difference was a provision which was included that would have changed the time sharing law to a presumptive 50-50 division of time. This was not adopted by the House and before a compromise could be reached, the State House of Representatives ended their session early in protest over a totally unrelated issue. This action by the House was never seen before and ultimately was ruled to be unconstitutional by the Florida Supreme Court. The ruling, however, did not change the outcome, since the session had already ended. The result being that once again an Alimony Reform bill, which was overwhelmingly approved, did not become law. It is anticipated that this issue will be back before the legislature in 2016. In the meantime, I thought it might be best to summarize the existing laws concerning alimony, so there is no misunderstanding as to what was merely a proposal versus what is in fact existing law. Florida lists several factors in determining whether alimony is appropriate. Some of these factors are: ▸▸ The standard of living established during the marriage ▸▸ The duration of the marriage ▸▸ The financial resources of each party ▸▸ The age and health of each party

If in fact based upon the above (as well as some other factors contained within the law) alimony is warranted, the issue then becomes what form of alimony? There are several possibilities. Each of the choices primarily depends on the length of marriage. A long term marriage is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. This results in a presumption of Permanent Alimony. Even with such a presumption, an award of permanent alimony is not automatic. Marriage of less than seven years is considered a short term marriage. A short term marriage could result in “Bridge the Gap” alimony which is awarded to assist a party by providing support to allow the party to make a transition from being married to being single. A marriage of greater than seven years is considered a moderate term marriage and could result in an award of Durational Alimony. The purpose of Durational Alimony is to provide a party with economic assistance for a set period of time. The above are just guidelines and there are in fact other factors which must be considered. As previously stated, the length of marriage is just one facto the Courts consider. It is best to consult with an experienced family law attorney for a further explanation. European Wax Center Leaves Skin Silky Smooth it’s their business
By Debby Teich
E
uropean Wax Center was founded a decade ago on the belief that all of us deserve beautiful, smooth skin. It is committed to giving more people the power to glow in the beauty of their own skin. Its wax method promises gorgeous skin with a lot less “ouch.”
ness and irritation. While other companies may use hard wax, European Wax Center’s stripless Comfort Wax is the only one that’s virtually painless. Made almost entirely from natural beeswax, Comfort Wax contains no alcohol, so it won’t dry out your skin.
General Manager Christina Pojdl answered some commonly asked questions about European Wax Centers.
How much do services cost? Services range from $10 to $68.
Describe your products. European Wax Center carries an exclusive line of full-body, exfoliating skin and brow care products designed to reveal the most beautiful you. Full of antioxidants and vitamins, our products are not only divine for your skin, they ensure that your next wax is less painful and lasts longer. From our celebrated skincare line to our deluxe brow brushes and tweezers, every product is formulated to reveal the natural, beautiful skin our guests never knew they had. What do you offer for ingrown hairs?
Describe European Wax Center’s success.
European Wax Center is one of the fastest growing beauty service brands in America today. Despite the economic downturn, European Wax Center has seen record breaking growth over the past six years, expanding from six locations to over 658. The brand’s continual success can be attributed to providing an exceptional guest experience, premium quality services, and products with a belief that luxurious waxing should be attainable to anyone seeking beautiful skin.
Because ingrown hairs are no one’s best friend, our best-selling, gentle Ingrown Hair Serum is not alcohol-based, so it won’t dry out the skin. Instead, it contains a small amount of glycolic acid to gently remove dead skin cells and improve skin hydration. It’s also packed with skin-loving ingredients and antioxidants, including calming tea tree oil, and our unique coffee and berry extracts, which are fabulous at keeping skin hydrated.
What is the best way to moisturize the skin? You can’t beat a luxurious buff and polish
heavenly Calming Cream reduces redness and irritation after waxing. Even better, it’s full of natural ingredients, including aloe and vitamin E to heal and soothe. It also has olea oil and shea butter to nourish.
Do you sell lotions? The Slow IT Body Lotion is luxurious on skin and tough on hair. This wonder lotion not only nourishes the skin, it’s packed with special plant enzymes that decrease hair length and density. This means hair grows back softer and thinner so future waxes are a breeze.
What can guests expect? European Wax
