Summer Fun is at your Fingertips

A

s we enter the second month of summer vacation, and the novelty of days with no school has worn off, many parents (myself included) are hearing the familiar phrase: “What are we doing today?” Fortunately, we live in a community where there are many great things to do all summer long. Many parents took advantage of Our City Magazine’s Camp Guide to find their kids the perfect summer camp experience. It’s available online (www.ourcitymedia.com) and many camp programs run through August so there’s still plenty of time to sign up. Other families may be spending time traveling to parts near and far. Most of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate our country’s 240th Independence Day. I plan on slow-cooking ribs on the barbecue. If you are looking for something to do right now, have no fear! Check out Our City Magazine’s monthly community calendar – it’s full of local events and activities for every age and every interest. Regardless of what you do this summer, remember to stay safe. Cheers,

Davie Offers Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program community news

By Debby Teich

D

avie’s rural character and equestrian lifestyle has attracted thousands of residents who own horses. The Town of Davie wants to make sure that these horses have the best chance of surviving if a major storm threatens the area. Every year, the Town opens a 100-acre fenced pasture at Robbins Park on Hiatus to serve as a holding area when a hurricane warning has been issued. The Town encourages residents to plan in advance, since waiting until the storm watch is posted may be too late. Broward County has its own “Large Animal Disaster Plan,” which identifies all post hurricane needs for horses. The Broward County plan addresses the vital issues in case of injury of horses, as well as facilities to hold them after the storm in case a horse is injured or cannot be immediately claimed by the owner. On a local level, the Town of Davie has concentrated its efforts in directing the development of a temporary neighborhood center to serve as a holding area before and during a hurricane. Pre-registration applications for the Temporary Hurricane Horse Release Program are available online at www.davie-fl.gov. The fee is $40 (from June 1 to November 30) per horse. The number of horses accepted is limited. The turn-out site is only for horses that are owned by Davie residents or boarded in Davie. Once a hurricane warning has been issued, the site will open for pre-registered horses only. This site will reopen to allow owners to retrieve their horses when the winds have subsided to a minimum of 40 mph or it is deemed safe by emergency personnel. The Town encourages residents to visit the site before they pre-register to determine if it is safer than their current situation, and to call with questions now as opposed to when the storm warning is issued. Harvey Kaplan of Davie owns a horse and plans to sign up for the program. Although he prefers to keep his horse on his own property during a storm, he will sign up in case there is severe weather. “I have a hurricane plan for my family and it is important to have one for my horse as well,” said Kaplan. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to my horse in a storm. I am happy that the Town has a program and I will certainly use it if necessary.”

For information on the Davie program, call 954-797-1163; send an email to Jeffrey_pohlman@davie-fl.gov; or visit www.davie-fl.gov, click on Hurricane Info and locate Davie Horse Release Program. For information on Broward County’s program, visit www.broward.org/disaster.

or nearly 60 years, Barbie has been a cultural icon. She has evolved with the times and kept up with the latest trends, and is still as popular as ever. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children three years and up. The event is free for lap children under three years. “It’s a wonderful way to spend quality time with your favorite girl, especially if she is a fan of Barbie,” said Executive Director Leslie Schroeder. “It makes for a delightful afternoon of fun and friendship amidst the charm of Old Davie School.” Throughout July 29, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, museum visitors will have an opportunity to experience “The Barbie Story – As Told By A Collector.” The exhibit tells the story of Barbie from her beginnings in 1959 to the present, as told by a collector. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children

five years and up. There is also a special price online only for the Combo Barbie Tea and Exhibit. Barbie has had more than 80 careers and represented more than 45 different nationalities. She has been outfitted by more than 70 famous couturiers and had over 40 pets, including cats and dogs, horses, a panda, a lion cub, and a zebra. She has owned a wide range of vehicles, including pink Corvette convertibles, trailers, and jeeps. In 1974, a section of Times Square in New York City was renamed Barbie Boulevard for a week. In 1985, the artist Andy Warhol created a painting of Barbie. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Rd., east of University Drive in Davie. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 07/31/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. F

or nearly 30 years, the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce has been awarding scholarships to students and educators of public schools. The Chamber announced the 2016 recipients at its monthly membership breakfast in May. The funding for the program comes from voluntary member donations and fundraising activities coordinated by the Chamber’s Education Committee. “It is important for the Chamber to award scholarships, because it gives the community a chance to recognize that our young people are Cooper City’s and Davie’s most important investment,” said Matthew Lerner, Chairperson of the Chamber’s Education Committee. “The scholarships exhibit just how important the role of business is in the community. Students who receive these scholarships are encouraged to expand their education beyond the high school level, and upon graduation to return back to the community to become productive citizens in our society.” The scholarship program is open to Chamber member high school seniors who will be attending a Florida college or university. Students submit applications and are selected based on several criteria including: academics, community involvement, financial need, school involvement and awards received.

The 2016 Scholarship recipients are:

hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. On July 23, chess players of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, from 9am-11am, at the Pool & Tennis Center, 1600 Stonebridge Parkway in Cooper City. “Chess is one of the most popular games in the world,” said Chris Averill, recreation director for the City of Cooper City Recreation Department. “It builds critical thinking skills to evaluate, comprehend and analyze each move on a continual basis. Most importantly, it is fun and challenging!” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Over 100 kids and parents typically attend. It is an opportunity for school-aged children to exercise their minds, as they compete against one another. Each month, the challenge rotates to different cities in the area. Recent challenges have been held in Hallandale Beach, Wilton Manors, Coral Springs, Lauderhill, Tamarac and Davie. Kids get a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend. Many of the students are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. Fourteen-year-old Justin Silvers has been playing chess for the past four years. He plans to attend the July challenge. “Chess is the ultimate game of the mind,” said Justin. “I am looking forward to meeting some other kids who also love the game, so I can play against them after school and on the weekends.”

GolfBoards Surf the Fairways of Davie Golf Club Community News

By Debby Teich

T

he game of golf has a new twist at Davie Golf Club. Players are “surfing” their way across the greens on the new GolfBoards. Davie Golf Club, which is owned by the Town of Davie and operated by Greenway Golf, is one of the only golf facilities in Southeast Florida to offer the new mode of transportation. “Greenway Golf’s company mission at Davie Golf Club has always been about delivering fun for players and guests,” said Ken Campbell, company COO. “To many, driving a golf cart is one of the most fun things about golf. The GolfBoard takes riding to another level of fun with an exciting interactive experience. Riders also get some fitness benefits as they work their core muscles and legs, while steering the GolfBoard.” The GolfBoard, which has its roots in surfing and snowboarding, was recently named the “Best New Product for Golf” at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. The four-wheel-drive, geardriven, posi-traction golf transport vehicle was built specifically for golf from the ground up. The user is always in full control of both the speed and direction of the board. The integrated thumb throttle controls the speed of the GolfBoard, while the user controls the direction through body movement. It is as intuitive to operate and only takes a few minutes of training to learn. Most golfers have the hang of it by the time they reach the first hole. “We have a saying around the course for play-

ers that ‘the most fun wins,’” said Campbell. “The GolfBoard is the most fun new product I have seen in many years. It is just simply cool.” This summer, the club is providing a series of Junior Golf Camps as part of the Town of Davie’s Summer Youth Golf Program. The program is funded by the net proceeds of the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, which is held annually during the Orange Blossom Festival. The camps will be conducted by the professional staff of Greenway Golf, which manages the course for the Town of Davie. Davie’s Junior Golf Camps are open to boys and girls, age 6 to 17, who want to learn the fundamentals of the sport. No experience is necessary and clubs will be provided to children who don’t have their own set. Each camp will provide ten hours of professional instruction, plus fun and games. Lunch will also be provided for each day of camp. Camps are scheduled Monday through Thursday, from 8:30am – 11:30am, on the following dates: ▸▸ July 18th - 21st - Registration deadline is July 15th ▸▸ August 8th - 11th - Registration deadline is August 5th The fee for Junior Golf Camp is $140 for first child per camp session, and $125 for each additional child in the same family. There is also an optional one-day camp fee of $38 per child.

We are also introducing the newest generation of laser cavity detection. This gives valuable information regarding the likely presence of cavities, as well as a breakdown of existing restorations.

Describe the office environment. We have

gone to great lengths to create a non-threatening and fun environment for the children. Most do not even realize that they are in a dental office. When the kids arrive, they can play age-appropriate games in the waiting room like Xbox and Nintendo. The office is decorated with a Polynesian island theme. It is filled with diversions, including a flat screen television in front of every dental chair, so the kids can watch a movie while receiving treatments. Of course, no visit to the dentist is ever complete without a trip to the treasure box. We also run seasonal contests for our patients.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

CoQ10 Supplementation Beneficial to Those on Cholesterol Medication By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

A

condition that affects 70 million Americans, high cholesterol, continues to be a growing concern in today’s society. Unfortunately, it is very common for practitioners to prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs, known as statins, in hopes of preventing a possible heart attack. But did you know that taking these drugs could actually increase your chances of getting a heart attack? There are serious risk factors associated with taking statins - which include name brands such as Crestor and Lipitor - that need to be considered by doctors and patients before starting treatment. For example, statins are known to lower production of Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10), an important antioxidant produced by the human body, which is needed for basic cell function. When CoQ10 levels are depleted, cells lose energy and free radicals are increased in the body, which in turn causes damage to mitochondrial DNA. Without CoQ10, one of the most important nutrients in the body, your heart muscle loses strength and its ability to pump blood, which leads to heart failure. Although statins are intended to help you reduce the risk of a heart attack, they interfere with important body functions and might be at fault for causing the very same condition you are trying to prevent. CoQ10 production slows down naturally as we age, so if you are on a statins regime it’s critical to ask your doctor about supplementation. With research shedding light on serious complications of statin usage, patients should consider alternative, more natural options to improve their health. At a functional medicine practice, we can treat high cholesterol through medical grade nutraceuticals - natural supplements that do not deplete the body of important nutrients. Examples of natural supplements we use are aged garlic extract and bergamot. It must be noted that when working with supplements, it’s not only the type that’s important, but its purity as well. Supplements must be administered in the proper form and dosage to ensure success - and this is where the expertise of the functional medicine doctor comes in. Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all parts of the body and it is critical to the normal function of all cells. Your body produces the cholesterol it needs, but cholesterol is also found in the foods you eat. When there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on the walls of the arteries causing these to narrow or harden preventing your heart from getting the blood it needs thus increasing the risk of a heart attack. High cholesterol is caused by different factors and a good doctor must not only look at total cholesterol levels, but also particle size and content of that cholesterol. The particle size is extremely important as dense particles in large amounts may cause inflammation and plaque, which recent research indicates may be more important when it comes to morbidity and mortality than just the total number of LDL, also known as the “bad” cholesterol. While prescription medications temporarily hide symptoms or silently worsen serious conditions, functional medicine offers a comprehensive approach that can help restore your health and vitality through a combination of natural supplements and lifestyle changes. Just know that there is a better way. Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954- 384-8989. Davie Residents Will Celebrate July 4th community news

By Debby Teich

F

or more years than he can remember, WWII veteran Harvey Miller has gathered with his family and Davie residents to celebrate our nation’s birthday, as well as his own. As he turns 90 this year, he will be surrounded by over 100 family members, including 33 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. All of them plan to attend the Town of Davie’s festivities and fireworks. “So many of us have fought hard to ensure that we remain a free nation,” said Miller. “We must always celebrate our freedom. I am grateful to my hometown of Davie for recognizing that.” On July 4th, Davie residents can celebrate the holiday at the Town of Davie’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day. The festivities begin with Fun at the

Pool, from 10am-4pm, at the Pine Island Pool. Activities include a free swim and inner tube water polo, as well as the Fun Foam Spray with the Davie Fire Department (11am), dive-in treasure hunt (1pm) and watermelon eating contest (3pm). From 4pm-9:30pm, the festivities continue at Bamford Sports Complex. Throughout the event, there will be kids’ arts and crafts, food trucks, face painting, bounce houses, train rides, craft vendors and more. There will also be kids interactive games (4:30pm), cake cutting with free cake while supplies last (6:30pm), live music by Paul Revere and the Raiders (7pm) and fireworks (9pm). Davie residents can also “go green” on the 4th by supporting the new Town of Davie Clothing, Shoes and Textile Recycling Program. Bring a plastic bag or two (tied) to the event and drop it in the recycling truck or bins with the Town of Davie logo. This new program not only helps the Town’s commitment to environmental compliance, but also helps fund local nonprofits through the Town Community Endowment Fund Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. No alcoholic beverages, guns, or fireworks, including sparklers, are permitted at any time during the event or inside the park. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Getting to the Bottom of Your Digestive Troubles Anyone who has suffered digestive problems knows that symptoms can range from mild to severe pain and bloating to diarrhea or constipation, none of which sounds like Ronnie Pimentel, MD much fun. But in truth a lot more could actually be going on. It’s important to find out as early as possible, because some issues can lead to more serious, chronic illnesses if left untreated.

of digestive disorders much more palatable. For example, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an important tool that allows doctors to see your internal organs very clearly. EUS provides very high resolution images, because it does not have to go through barriers such as skin and bone, as compared to surface ultrasound.

Your digestive system is a complex and extensive part of the body. It starts at your mouth, down your esophagus to your stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, and ends at your anus. It’s responsible for helping your body absorb essential nutrients and then getting rid of the waste, which are very important functions. So, if you continue to suffer from digestive disturbances, it’s probably time to make an appointment with your doctor. Not only will you be more comfortable once you’ve gotten to the source of the issue, more importantly, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce damage to your esophagus and GI tract.

EUS is very useful in helping physicians evaluate cancers or other tumors of the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon, liver, gall bladder, digestive tract and rectum, as well as to plan the most effective treatment strategies. It can even provide good images of smaller masses that may not be detected using other technology. And, preliminary results are available immediately, allowing for timely staging and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. In fact, in the past 5 years EUS has become utilized more and more in this capacity.

Today, gastroenterologists are using advanced technology that make diagnosis and treatment

According to Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist Ronnie Pimentel, MD, “the EUS procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting, and usually takes close to 45 minutes.” He adds that “patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure, and are able to go home the same day.”

How EUS works EUS is much like a regular endoscopy procedure in that a probe is inserted down the esophagus and into the stomach.

The difference, however, is that the probe’s tip has an ultrasound camera on it that provides a very clear view of the stomach and nearby organs. By getting so close to the organs, EUS allows doctors to take a biopsy through the stomach wall, by removing a small amount of tissue for testing. Getting a biopsy this way is more comfortable for patients than a traditional needle biopsy through the skin, and more critical is the fact that it reduces the risk of “seeding,” or spreading the tumor through the skin or to other parts of the body. Dr. Pimentel states that, “another important use for EUS is to perform nerve blocks for severe pain in cancer patients. We also can insert markers (known as fiducials) to guide future radiation treatments so that they target only the tumor, not the healthy tissue around it.” In addition, EUS is sometimes used to help find answers for patients with abdominal pain that doctors have been unable to explain.

Cooper City High School Student Named Sunshine State Scholar

school news

By Debby Teich

B

enjamin Goldstein of Cooper City High School was recently named one of the Broward County School District’s 2016 Sunshine State Scholars. The Sunshine State Scholars program recognizes the state’s top 11th grade students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and encourages them to pursue their postsecondary education and future careers in Florida. The students, who are nominated by their schools, must write an essay that links their accomplishments to their future goals and outlines why they should be a Sunshine State Scholar. Based on the responses in the application, a district level committee selects the district nominees to the state. “The Sunshine Scholars Program provides recognition to students for their dedication and hard work in STEM areas for which they may not otherwise receive that acknowledgement,” said Dr. Merilyn Johnson, BCPS Secondary Science Supervisor. “Benjamin was selected as one of the district nominees, because he has been successful in advanced/ honors level math and science courses, which number much more than is necessary for high school graduation. He has served as an officer in math and science clubs, and participated in several math and science competitions. All of the Sunshine State Scholars were honored by the Florida Department of Education in Orlando. During the twoday program, they: ▸▸ Received recognition for their achievements. ▸▸ Met with STEM industry leaders and learned about the latest innovations, discoveries and careers available in Florida. ▸▸ Talked with representatives from Florida’s colleges and universities about special programs of study and industry internship opportunities.

Benjamin says that he plans to study computer science in college, ideally with an emphasis on data analysis and machine learning applications. He is also interested in the application of computer-based data analysis and machine learning in biology, chemistry, and engineering. Ideally, he would like to pursue a career related to the defense/ national security industry, since he has always felt that he has a responsibility to use his abilities for the benefit of his country. “As the Internet allows more and more data to be produced, curated, and accessed, more tools will be needed to derive meaning from it,” said Benjamin. “The sheer amount of data available makes computer-based analysis tools a necessity for the productive exploration of this data.” Some of Benjamins STEM accolades include: winning 4th place at the Broward County Science Fair; being selected as a research speaker for the Junior Symposium of Engineering, Humanities and Science at the University of Florida; and receiving an Honorable Mention in the United States of America Mathematical Talent Search. He has also participated in numerous STEM competitions, ranging from the UCF High School Programming Tournament to the Chemistry Olympiad. Some of his non-STEM accolades include: being selected as a Carson Scholar, winning the televised trivia competition School Duel with his school’s team two years in a row, and being an member of the National Forensics League debate organization with the Honor distinction. In the fall, Benjamin plans to apply to University of Florida, University of Central Florida, the U.S. Naval Academy, and MIT, among others. His top choice is MIT.

long with many other parents, you may be concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security. Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws, as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit. One common effect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite.” This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life. We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils.” We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7.

Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Lady Maverick Soccer Team Gives Back

School News

hile most soccer teams are told to leave it all on the field, the Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School Lady Mavericks are encouraged to save some energy to help those in need. For the last six years, community service has been an integral part of the team’s success. When the girls are not training or competing, they are volunteering throughout Broward County. Until July 15, the team will be collecting items for its annual Food Drive, which takes place during summer soccer camp. “The girls that join our team find out very quickly that as much as we want to be successful on the field, there’s a lot more to being a Lady Maverick soccer player,” said Head Coach Mike Sica, who began with the Lady Mavericks as an assistant coach in 2006 and became head coach in 2010. “There is a commitment to community involvement that brings a greater meaning to our team. The players realize they are a part of something much bigger than just a high school soccer team.” Sica estimates that the Lady Mavericks participate in at least four volunteer efforts each year. In the past six years, the Lady Mavericks have raised $23,635 for the Sarcoma Foundation; collected 2,875 pounds of food for the Pantry of Broward; worked in the

On the field the Lady Mavericks are equally impressive. The 2015-2016 season concluded with a successful on the field posting of 18-4-1 and the team reached the Regional Semifinals for the 14th time in 15 years. Since 2010, the Lady Mavericks have won 115 games, which is nearly a .750 winning percentage. In that time, over 30 players have received All County recognition, 12 players have received college scholarships, and Sica has been named Coach of the Year several times. “The Lady Maverick family is a special group,” said Sica. “As some graduate and new players join the team, the spirit of helping continues. Many return to assist us at our soccer summer camp and Sarcoma Game. The older players teach the younger ones the value of teamwork and how to make a difference by helping others on and off the field. The girls know that the culture of the McCarthy soccer program - once a Lady Maverick, you’ll always be a Lady Maverick. They will always be a member of the family.”

Securing Our Safety Through Smart Second Chances By Sheriff Scott Israel

veryone deserves a second chance. As individuals, we undoubtedly will make mistakes. It’s how we learn from those mistakes and move forward that determine our resolve and shape the remainder of our lives. Yet for individuals attempting to re-enter society after a stint in prison, those second chances are fraught with countless pitfalls, complex obstacles and troubling temptations. Each year, the State of Florida releases nearly 2,500 felony inmates who return to Broward. Most come from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities, and many are severely undereducated— some reading at just a sixth grade level. With few skills and often without solid family support, nearly two out of every three will reoffend, leading to a vicious cycle of incarceration and resulting in repeated victimization, strained family relationships, damaged communities and increased costs for taxpayers. As Sheriff, I understand the importance of removing these barriers. Recently, the Broward Sheriff’s Office launched the ground-breaking inmate re-entry portal. In partnership with the Florida Department of Corrections and the Broward Re-Entry Coalition, the portal provides released inmates with quick, easy and effective access to community services, including potential housing, employment, transportation and health care, needed to ease the transition back into society. By providing these services, we are helping reduce crime by preventing the re-arrest of released inmates by as much as 50 percent, while assisting offenders in supporting their families, paying taxes and becoming productive, lawabiding citizens. It also has the added impact of saving money for taxpayers, who shell out a staggering $118 per day to keep each offender incarcerated. Simply put, the program bolsters public safety, saves dollars and makes sense. It is already producing results. Take Carlos H., for example. Carlos has been part of the program since February, after serving 3 ½ years in prison. He’s been in this position of transition before, only to find himself quickly reoffending. With the help of the program, Carlos has received assistance in putting food on his table, a place to sleep, transportation access and gainful employment. More importantly, Carlos believes the portal is giving him his best chance at turning his life around. “I can’t tell you enough what this is doing for me,” Carlos says. “I love everything about it. By the grace of God, I feel like it’s giving me the best chance of coming back into society and succeeding. I feel blessed.” The portal is the latest tool in BSO’s progressive community policing model. Over the past three years, BSO has instituted forward-thinking initiatives that have successfully tackled the most pressing law enforcement issues in the county. Since becoming Sheriff in 2013, violent crime is down 18 percent and burglaries have plummeted 42 percent. While I’m proud of these achievements, I have long maintained BSO is much more than just a law enforcement agency; we are part of the community. Though enforcing the law and catching bad guys will always remain a major part of what we do every day, I have made it a priority to change BSO’s culture from reactive to proactive. I believe we can prevent some crimes from occurring through progressive public safety and social service initiatives. The portal is the logical next step in the evolution of law enforcement at BSO—and one that will continue to make Broward safer and more united.

Existing-Home Sales Are Up By Zona Horton, CRS, GRI, e-Pro, Realtor

section real estate head

xisting-home sales continue to be on the upswing, despite ongoing inventory shortages and escalating home prices, the National Association of REALTORS® reported in May 2016. “Sales activity overall was at a healthy pace last month as very low mortgage rates and modest seasonal inventory gains encouraged more households to search for and close on a home,” Lawrence Yun says. “Sales are meaningfully higher than a year ago in much of the country.”

Four Statistics That Gauge Our Real Estate Market Home prices

▸▸ Nationally: The median existing-home price for all housing types in April was $232,500, a 6.3 percent increase from a year ago ($218,700). ▸▸ Locally: Davie and Cooper City are experiencing a median priced home of $375,000, an increase of 5.2% based on the same quarter one year ago. In May, the median priced home escalated to $420,000.

All-cash sales:

▸▸ Nationally: All-cash sales comprised 24 percent of transactions in April. Investors purchased 13 percent of homes in April, which matches the lowest share since October 2015. ▸▸ Locally: Of the 53 sales in 2016, 24 were cash sales or 45%. Of those reported in our Matrix system, two of those sales were investment, while the others seemed to be primary or secondary homes.

Distressed sales:

• Burial • Cremation • Advance Planning • U.S. Veterans Packages • Cemetery Property • Tributes of a Lifetime • Reception Facilities • Wings of Hope Support Program • Transfer out of State/Country

JULY 2016 | OUR CITY DAVIE

▸▸ Nationally: Foreclosures and short sales dropped for the second consecutive month to 7 percent in April, down from 10 percent a year ago. Five percent of April sales were foreclosures and 2 percent were short sales. Foreclosures sold, on average, at a discount of 17 percent below market value in April, while short sales were discounted 10 percent. ▸▸ Locally: As for the nation, REOs and shortsales have dropped – down 34% from last year. With only 2.3 months of inventory and the fact that prices are rising, we see that the number of distressed homes will continue to drop.

Inventory levels:

▸▸ Nationally: Total housing inventory at the end of April rose 9.2 percent to 2.14 million existing homes available for sale. Still, that is 3.6 percent lower than a year ago (2.22 million). Unsold inventory is at a 4.7-month supply at the current sales pace. ▸▸ Locally: Not surprisingly, Davie and Cooper City are experiencing 4.1 months of inventory in the single-family-home arena – this is a decrease of 16% the same quarter last year yet still substantially low – touting a Seller’s market. “The temporary relief from mortgage rates currently near three-year lows has helped preserve housing affordability this spring, but there’s growing concern a number of buyers will be unable to find homes at affordable prices if wages don’t rise and price growth doesn’t slow,” Yun says. Low inventory, increasing home prices and amazingly low interest rates are all indicators that it is time for you to put your home on the market and purchase more Real Estate. T

he one question that I am always asked by a prospective client is, “How much will this cost me?” It is obviously a very fair question, which deserves an answer. Unfortunately, often my answer is not well received by the individual. It is not because my answer suggests an extremely large fee, but rather the answer is open ended. I tell them I am unable to give them a complete cost, because billing is based upon the amount of time it will take to conclude the case. The more time, the more work, the higher the fee. I explain that the fee is really controlled by the clients and not the attorneys. If they can reach a fair and equitable agreement, the cost will obviously be less than a contested matter. The more clients litigate, the more money they will spend. I do not “cap” my fees in a divorce action. I have been asked many times to quote a final, 100% complete price. I am unable to accommodate that request. It is unfortunate, but the cost of litigation cannot be determined at the initial meeting. The cost of a divorce can increase based upon a number of factors. It often times is due to an unreasonable expectation by one or both of the clients. Unreasonable expectations often lead to litigation, because a settlement cannot be achieved. Unfair settlement offers can also lead to higher fees, since nobody should settle for an unreasonable and unfair resolution. In addition, some aspects of a divorce case are not even negotiable. As an example, child support is determined by Florida Child Support Guidelines and is statutory. Therefore, the amount of support is not negotiable between the parents. Higher fees can be generated by lack of cooperation or failure to act in a

timely fashion. Financial discovery is an important aspect of a divorce case. There are certain requirements which must be fulfilled within a specific time frame. Many clients get totally stressed out when I hand then their “homework,” which requires gathering certain financial documents and completing a Financial Affidavit. I do understand why it becomes a stressful task. Just because you may be going through a divorce does not mean that all other aspects of your life are put on hold. The financial tasks are time consuming. Many individuals who are going through a divorce are not emotionally ready to deal with the completion of financial documents. Unfortunately, these tasks have to be completed in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will lead to motions being filed and hearings being set before a judge. The result is always additional fees, which should not be necessary; but for the client’s failure to complete the task in a timely manner. These are just some examples of situations which can cause fees to increase. As I stated previously, very often it is the client who controls the cost. Perhaps now you can understand why a set fee in a divorce is not a possibility.

What is a Mommy Makeover? By Dr. Tamy Faierman

Dr. Tamy Faierman is board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery. Her office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Blvd, Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus. M

oms all over South Florida are having Mommy Makeovers and women here in Weston are no exception. Experiencing a pregnancy is a powerful and beautiful event. It can be a rewarding experience and nothing is as touching as holding your newborn baby for the first time. However, your body does not simply snap back to normal after giving birth; the weight gain, stretching, and laxity in the abdominal muscles all contribute to changes in the breasts, abdomen, and thigh, that stay with your body long after giving birth. During pregnancy women tend to gain anywhere from 20-35 pounds and sometimes even more. Stretched abdominal muscles, breasts that have begun to sag and lose volume, and excess fat surrounding the hips, thighs, and buttocks are the most common “problem areas” that can develop after giving birth. Along with a healthy diet and a regular exercise regimen, the cosmetic surgeon typically performs a series of procedures, collectively known as a Mommy Makeover, with the goal being to help women regain their pre-pregnancy body and self-confidence. We deeply believe that patient education is an important factor involved with plastic surgery; therefore, it is our priority to provide the necessary information regarding the Mommy Makeover. A Mommy Makeover is a series of surgical body contouring procedures to reverse the dramatic effects of pregnancy and childbirth on a woman’s body. These are performed in one operation, commonly including: abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast augmentation, and/or breast lift surgery, labiaplasty, and liposuction. Performing multiple procedures at the same time does reduce overall recovery time, although it is suggested that patients allow two weeks for the initial recovery, although often up to six weeks of healing are needed before returning to your regular life schedule. Returning to an active lifestyle too soon can result in unwanted complications and diminished results. Patients will notice bruising and tenderness in the operated areas during the initial recovery process, this is normal and will improve within the first few weeks. In addition, it is important that the cosmetic surgeon provide the necessary emotional support and understanding in order for the patient to have a positive experience and outcome. A surgeon’s goal is to produce natural-looking results that will help return your body to a shape that closely resembles your pre-pregnancy physique, or better.

Sydney, who is majoring in Public Health at the University of Michigan, shadowed Dr. Greenbaum for six weeks this summer. “It was a pleasure to work with Sydney,” said Dr. Greenbaum, who graduated from University of Michigan. “She reminds me a lot of myself 20 years ago. She has already made the decision to pursue a career in medicine and I have no doubt she will make a great physician.” Sydney wanted to learn more about the field of ophthalmology, as well as the daily life and routine of a physician. “Ophthalmology is one of the most technically challenging professions in the medical field,” said Sydney. “The doctor has to work on a very small area with a limited field of vision. One wrong move and the patient could end up without sight.” As a positive role model and mentor, Dr. Greenbaum encourages students to understand the medical field, as well as other fields. “I advise all students to work hard to become well-rounded adults,” said Dr. Greenbaum. “While most pre-med students like to focus on science courses, I encourage them to take additional courses that will broaden their knowledge base.” Dr. Greenbaum, who is a native of Southeast Michigan, attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with High Distinction, with a major in Spanish language & History. She continued her education at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. She completed her residency training in Ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where she served as Chief Resident. She is fluent in Spanish. Anyone interested in shadowing Dr. Greenbaum and learning more about the ophthalmic field should call the office to set up an interview. Hollywood Eye Institute is located at 11011 Sheridan Street, #215, in Hollywood. For information, call 954-447-0606 or visit www.hollywoodeyeinstitute.com.

n May 10, Town Administrator Richard J. Lemack announced the appointment of Julie Downey as Town of Davie Fire Rescue Chief effective Monday, May 9, 2016. Chief Downey is the first female fire chief to be appointed in Broward County. In appointing the new Fire Chief, Lemack stated, “Chief Downey is overwhelmingly supported and recognized for her credentials, command presence, equitable leadership style, technological advancements, and interpersonal skills. She is a respected leader in the fire service and has been instrumental in advancing our department to have state of the art equipment, training and apparatus incorporating cost savings.” Her accomplishments in the area of emergency management and program advancement have been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally. Chief Downey, a Davie resident, has served 34 years in the fire rescue service and has been with the Town of Davie for the past 12 years in the capacity of Battalion Chief and Assistant Fire Chief. She has earned degrees in Organizational Leadership, Nursing, Fire Sciences, and Emergency Management. Chief Downey has authored mass casualty incident procedures, EMS protocols, and numerous grants, lectured at conferences, is an instructor, and is appointed to task forces. Her certifications and professional memberships are impressive and attest to her ability to lead the Davie Fire Rescue Department. For more than 40 years, the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds of Davie, located in the historical western theme downtown district, has served as Davie’s main tourist attraction. This indoor/outdoor facility has been building and establishing itself as one of the up-and-coming, multi-cultural locales in South Florida. Originally, the center was established as a rodeo arena. As the need for more versatile activities increased, the rodeo grounds expanded to meet the demands for such diverse events as top name concert entertainers and family events such as: monster trucks, horse shows, dog shows, car shows, air boat shows, specialty shows and industrial shows. There is always something happening at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds of Davie.
