It’s Back to School Time
T
he lazy days of summer are slowly coming to an end. There are a couple of weeks of pool time, beach days and movie matinees left to relax and unwind; rejuvenate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Before we know it, the kids will be back to school and we’ll be back to crazy carpool schedules and chauffeuring to afterschool activities and sports practices. The next few weeks will be a blur; stocking up on school supplies and buying new clothes and sneakers. Now is the time to start thinking about afterschool enrichment programs. In this issue you will find our Back to School Guide. We’ve put together a list of activities in our area to keep your kids busy after school with everything from dance classes and martial arts to tutoring programs and academic enrichment classes. The guide also includes local child care and preschool programs. Before that first day of school arrives, let’s have a few more days of summer fun with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back to school, again!

ive-year old Zachary Shulkin loves to watch the fire engines as they race down the street. He recently attended the 17th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event, where he had an opportunity to see, touch, and explore a fire truck, as well as some other big trucks and vehicles. He also met some of the people who drive them. Over 1,000 people attended the event at the Cooper City Sports Complex. “It was awesome,” said Zachary. “I actually got to climb inside of the truck and sit in the driver’s seat!” There were more than 40 trucks and vehicles on display. BSO fire and police departments provided SWAT and Hazmat equipment trucks, a Smart car and fire trucks, including a restored fire truck that the children were allowed to paint. Their attendance drives our direction.” For information, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233.

Boys & Girls Club in Davie Offers Chinese SECTION HEAD Community News
By Debby Teich
T
he kids at Florence A. DeGeorge Boys & Girls Club in Davie are among many Americans that are studying Mandarin as a second language. They are learning to speak, write and read the language. This is the third year that 17-year-old Rachel Bomser, who studies Mandarin at University School of NSU, will be sharing her passion for the Chinese language during Hao Pengyou (“Good Friend”) Hour at the club. Once a week, she meets with approximately 15 kids that range in age from upper elementary to middle school. She has enlisted the help of some of her classmates to expand the program to other Boys & Girls Clubs in the area. “I developed this project to share my love of the Chinese language and culture with other children, especially those who do not have the opportunity to learn Chinese at their schools,” said Rachel. Rachel created her own lesson plans, which include weekly vocabulary, games and take home activities. She focuses on teaching basic conversational skills and vocabulary that the children want to learn, such as colors, clothing, sports, food, and animals. They record the Chinese characters, phonetic pronunciation and definitions in notebooks. Rachel also teaches the children about Chinese culture and holidays. In February, for example, they celebrated the Chinese New Year by making decorations and sampling traditional Chinese treats. “Our Club members absolutely love the class,”
Rachel Bomser displays a notebook from one of her Chinese students at the Boys & Girls Club.
said Michelle White, Club Director. “They are thrilled to be able to go home and teach their parents what they have learned about the culture of China and to show off their new language skills. The value of the class extends beyond the time spent in the classroom with Rachel, because it provides our youth with a fun, new opportunity to engage with their parents.” Rachel says that Chinese is difficult to learn, because it is so different from English. “In Chinese, there are multiple pronunciations of the same word and an incorrect pronunciation can alter the meaning,” said Rachel. “The grammar is also difficult to learn, because the sentence structure is different than English.” Rachel tries to speak Mandarin whenever she can, including at a local dim sum restaurant. After she graduates high school, she plans to visit China, where she will have a greater opportunity to practice everything she has learned. She wants to major in Chinese in college and ultimately work in the Hospitality industry. “The ability to speak Chinese will help me in my career, whether it is working in China or communicating with Chinese hotels and industries,’ said Rachel. “My dream is to work for Disney and there are many opportunities to work in or in conjunction with the Disney Hong Kong Resort and Disney Shanghai Resort.”
David Posnack JCC to Host JCC Maccabi Games/ArtsFest By Debby Teich
F
rom August 9-14, the David Posnack JCC in Davie will be hosting the JCC Maccabi Games/ArtsFest. Approximately 7,500 people are expected to attend the opening ceremonies at BB&T Center, at 7pm, which will include a parade of athletes, a torch lighting ceremony, a tribute to the 11 Israeli athletes who were killed at the Munich Olympics, and more. Since their inception in 1982, the Games have grown from a small pilot project in one host community to an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in multiple sites throughout North America. Today, over 6,000 teens, ranging from 13 to 16 years of age, participate in the JCC Maccabi Games each summer. “The JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest are a way for teens to meet other teens from around the world,” said Lori Green, executive co-chair. “They learn about their heritage in a nonthreatening and non-formal educational way.” One of the missions of the event is to galvanize the community. In preparation, the Posnack JCC has spent the last three years planning; fundraising; completing feasibility studies; forming committees and partnerships with local businesses, corporations and organizations; and much more. This is the first time that the multi-sport and cultural event will be held in Broward County. “We have definitely been successful in the engagement of the 50 plus synagogues, several Jewish Day Schools, organizations, Memorial Healthcare System, Nova Southeastern University, Greater Ft. Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, municipalities and governmental agencies,” said Green. Throughout the five-day event, over 1200 artists and athletes from around the globe and across the United States will participate in competitions, workshops, performances and community service. The event requires the help of many, including close to 500 businesses, organizations and individuals that have given monetary and/or in-kind donations; 1,000 individual volunteers; and 800 households that will host families. During the Maccabi Games, athletes will compete in baseball, basketball, competitive dance, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball at venues throughout Broward County. ArtsFest participants will spend

the week with a talented roster of artists-in-residence, who will conduct non-competitive intensive workshops in vocal music, musical theater, culinary arts, performance dance, acting/ improve, rock band, star reporting and visual arts. The ArtsFest program will culminate in a showcase on August 13 at Nova Southeastern University. Through the JCC Cares program, all of the athletes and artists are required to participate in hands-on service projects to give back to their host community in a meaningful way. They will also have an opportunity to visit local attractions and attend a variety of social events, such as barbecues and dance parties. For information, visit www.fortlauderdalejccmaccabi.com.

Families Spend Quality Time Together at Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo Community News
By Debby Teich

ver 130 kids recently left their electronics behind to spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 33nd Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo, at Wolf Lake Park in Davie. The kids were divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When they caught a fish, they brought it to the judges table, where a volunteer helped to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Professional fisherman Chris Rand was the MC for the event. Throughout the morning, he offered instructional demonstrations for kids on baiting hooks, lures and casting. Prizes were awarded in all age groups for a variety of categories. Some of the prizes included: fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes, and trophies. The winners were as follows:

DBS for Movement Disorders: Tuning the Brain There are more than 100 nervous system disorders that afflict millions of people across the globe. Many of the disorders affect a person’s movement and alter their motor controls. This includes balance, gait, speed of movement, tremors, jerks and abnormal postures. Deep brain stimulation or DBS has successfully treated these symptoms and allowed many sufferers to reclaim their lives. At Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Pauline Braathen Neurological Center, a collaborative approach is utilized. The team of neurologists and neurosurgeons has pioneered the use of DBS since the original clinical trials in the mid1990s. Cleveland Clinic Florida continues to be at the forefront of innovative breakthroughs and successful treatments.
DBS is the use of a small electrical current sent to the brain. Electrodes are placed in specific areas of the brain; the location depends on each patient’s specific symptoms and treatments. The electrodes are connected by wires to a pacemaker-like device, implanted in the chest. The device will continuously send electrical pulses to the brain targets, stopping the impulses that cause tremors or other movement disorders. This treatment has been successful in treating disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and Tourette syndrome. DBS is a very safe and effective treatment. Patients who undergo DBS see a 50 to 70 percent improvement in their movement symptoms and a significant reduction in their tremors. They’ve also reported an average of 50 percent improvement in their walking and balance following surgery. Most DBS

patients are able to significantly reduce their medications after undergoing the procedure. The neurological team at Badih Adada, MD Cleveland Cleveland Clinic Florida Clinic Florida Neurosurgeon consists of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons and medical support staff who work collaboratively to treat each individual case. The neurologist evaluates each patient and employs non-surgical treatments first. If further treatment is needed, the neurologist and the neurosurgeon will work together to coordinate the DBS procedure, as well as throughout the surgery. Patients are awake under mild sedation for the procedure, because surgeons need to ensure the electrodes are controlling the patient’s abnormal movement. This collaboration is vitally important because the difference between success and failure is measured in millimeters. In the past a lesion was created in the areas of the brain that were abnormal in order to treat movement disorders. Now, instead of injuring the brain, we electrically stimulate it to re-establish normal movements with minimum risk to other areas of the brain. The results are often dramatic. For patients with severe tremors, it’s practically a cure; often their tremor is completely gone. For patients with Parkinson’s, we usually see marked improvement in symptoms and a decrease in the need for medication. There are many complex factors that must be taken into account before considering DBS. You should discuss your condition and symptoms with a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. Patients who have tried medical treatments including medications, and have not attained satisfactory control of their disorder, should talk to a physician about their DBS options.

Davie PAL Boxers Hoping to Make the USA Olympic Team By Debby Teich
Can Do Kids
T
eofimo Lopez, 17, and Javaune Javaune James James, 20, have spent countless hours training at the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) to perfect their boxing skills and it has been paying off for both of them. Their dreams of being on the USA Olympic team may soon be a reality. “We are very pleased at all the hard work our boxers and our team have been putting in over this last year, and I think it shows in their accomplishments,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. In April, Lopez (Lightweight Division) and James (Welterweight Division) represented Davie PAL at the State Golden Gloves Championships. After competing in four fights over four days, both were pronounced State Golden Glove Champions. They advanced to Nationals in Las Vegas in May. Lopez fought five fights over five days and won all of them by a unanimous decision, making him the National Golden Glove Champion in the Lightweight Division. James made it to the quarter finals, where he is in the top eight in the nation in his Welterweight Division. In June, Lopez and James participated in the Olympic Qualifier in Colorado Springs. Lopez qualified and will participating in the Olympic Trials in December 2015. He was also recognized as the most outstanding fighter in the tournament. James won his first two fights and lost a close third fight. He may still have a second chance at participating in the Olympic Trials. If they make the Olympic team, it will be the first time that Davie PAL has kids at this level.
Lopez has been fighting for the past 12 years and with Davie PAL for four years. He trains approximately seven hours each day. “I feel like I was born for this sport,” said Lopez. “It’s a natural fit for me.” Albury says Lopez has achieved his goals through hard work. “I believe his commitment and passion to be the best is what makes him so successful,” said Albury. “He is fully dedicated to being the very best in the world.” James has been fighting for the past 15 years and with Davie PAL for nearly four years. He also trains for seven hours each day. “I love that every time you get in the ring you have to prove to yourself that you are the best,” said James. There are approximately 30 participants in the Davie PAL boxing program, which is for beginners and more advanced boxers. As the boxers progress in their training, they move to the boxing team, where they have the opportunity to compete all over the country. Davie PAL is open to any child, ages 7 to 21. There are currently over 500 children in the program. “At Davie PAL, kids have a safe place to train, play, and hang out with friends,’ said Albury. “They are part of something special.” Teofimo Lopez

Work Out Smarter Not Harder By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

eing a functional medicine doctor, I’m used to dealing with a range of athletes—from beginners to professionals. One issue they both often have in common is that they find themselves stuck with a program that doesn’t yield the expected results, in spite of following the advice of a coach or personal trainer. I have personally treated patients who have jeopardized their health trying to achieve those goals. Eating too little and exercising too hard or for too long is a bad combination that can lead to disaster. Through metabolic medicine, we are now able to medically and scientifically evaluate individuals to help them achieve their fitness goals, whether it is better performance or just losing a couple of pounds. Metabolic medicine uses specialized testing to determine how many calories an individual should consume daily to achieve weight loss, lean muscle gain, sports performance enhancement, or general health and wellness goals. Metabolic testing can help avoid the three key mistakes often made by individuals trying to gain lean muscle mass, achieve weight loss, and improve fitness. ▸▸ Not eating enough calories to maintain lean mass. There is no need to starve. Food is fuel and should be used to keep you working at optimal levels.

▸▸ Training in the wrong zone. Individualized testing will determine your optimal training zones based on your needs (e.g., fat burning, endurance, etc.). This is not done by using a simple phone App but by taking direct measurements from your body while exercising and at rest. ▸▸ Mistaking body weight as a guiding measurement. Body weight is not always the best indicator. Lean mass and body fat percentages are more effective in measuring progress. The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and the VO2 Max are two tests needed to perform a full evaluation. The RMR is a measure of the number of calories your body consumes at rest. By directly measuring your RMR and the type of fuel you burn, namely, fats or sugars (carbohydrates), the RMR serves as the foundation for prescribing your daily nutritional requirements and exercise program needed to reach your goal weight. This is a painless and non-invasive test. VO2 Max test measures the ability of your heart, lungs, and circulation to deliver oxygen to your exercising muscles. It is a gauge of the maximum energy output or work your body can produce at peak performance. Individual heart rate ranges are established for recovery, endurance, and interval training based on your test results in order to maximize your workouts and improve your success in achieving your goals. The tests remove the guesswork out of training and allow for individuals to exercise more efficiently based on scientific research. However, this means nothing if you don’t work with a medical professional that can help you understand the data and guide you in the right direction. Functional Medicine doctors have that training and can help you achieve success by drafting a metabolic, optimal wellness and nutritional plan that is simple to follow. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. The contest is open to residents of the Town of Southwest Ranches who are 18 years old or older. Younger residents may also enter with their parent or guardian’s written permission. The deadline to submit work is September 1. The theme for the contest is “anything in our town” and excludes people. This year, the board will be creating a calendar with the winning photos. The calendar will be available at Town Hall. “It is a wonderful opportunity for residents to show what the Town of Southwest Ranches means to them,” said Susan Kutz, staff liaison for the Rural Public Arts and Design Advisory Board. Members of the Rural Public Arts & Design Advisory Board will judge the contest. The winning 12 photographs will be announced on October 17, at the Annual Southwest Ranches Country Roads Arts and Crafts Festival, held at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park, 5840 Volunteer Road. Festival visitors will find all handmade crafts or original art, and more. The show includes stained glass, fabric and leather crafts, specialty wood products,
mosaics, paintings, jewelry, and much more. There will also be music and plenty of food from vendors. There is a playground close by so parents can shop, while their kids play. How to enter: High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Submissions must be high-resolution photographs of at least 300 dpi at 3,000 pixels on the longest side or an original photo negative, print or slide. Photographs must be in a pdf, tiff, jpg, or gif format. Files submitted may not be larger than 5Mb. Photos must be presented as an 8”X10” size in either glossy or mat finish. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents, are acceptable. All entries must be received at Town Hall, 13400 Griffin Road in Southwest Ranches on CD or sent via email to Skutz@southwestranches.org by 2pm on September 1. Davie United GU13 Sharks Soccer Team Ranked #1 in the State
Sports News
By Debby Teich
T
he U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has been an inspiration for many throughout the world, including the Davie United GU13 Sharks soccer team. Finishing their U12 season as the top ranked team in the state, there is a possibility that one or more of the Sharks might have the opportunity to play on the National Team someday. In preparation for the state championship, the girls trained three or four days per week, played scrimmages and games on the weekends, and participated in rigorous tournaments locally and out of town. Often times, they even played teams in older age groups. In the final game, they beat West Florida Flames with a score of 4-0. “The girls are successful, because of the connection they have with each other, their longevity with the team and its stability, as well as their own passion for the sport of soccer,” said Monica Schlosser, whose daughter Karlie plays on the team. The team is entering its third season with the Davie United Soccer Club. Most of the girls live and go to school in Davie/Cooper City. Matthew Parry, Director of Operations/Asst. D.O.C Girls Program, says the team has been successful both on and off the field. “The team has won many championships and excelled in the classroom,” said
Briseida Casta, m.d. pediatrician
Parry. “The girls are looking forward to the coming season. They can’t wait to continue to grow and to nurture the special bond that they have created over the years.” Abbi Gilchrist, 12, started playing soccer when she was five. The right forward has been playing with Davie United for two years. “I love that I get to play on this great team, learn skills and have fun,” said Abbi. “It is amazing to win a state championship. It proves that we have good coaches and that we have learned a lot from them. I believe the team has been successful, because we practice hard, train a lot, and always work at 110%.” Jessica Gonzalez, 12, has been playing soccer for eight years. The left back (defense) has been playing with Davie United for two years. “It is really exciting to be a state champion,” said Jessica. “I am very happy and excited that all of our hard work paid off. Our team was successful, because we cooperate with each other and with our coaches. We also work really hard and are all really dedicated to the team.” For information, visit www.daviesharks.com.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/15) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at WindmillHealth@ att.net – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $47. p.p.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

Davie/Cooper City Students Win Broward League of Cities Scholarship
School News
By Debby Teich
A
nnabel Campo of Davie and Blake Altman of Cooper City will now have to pay a little less for their college education. Both students were selected to receive the Broward League of Cities’ Annual Scholarship for Government Studies. Every year, the League awards four $1,000 scholarships to Broward County seniors who plan to pursue a major in public administration, political science or other government-related field at a college or university. Scholarships are made possible thanks to Broward County’s elected officials and the Broward League of Cities’ associate members, who make personal contributions through raffle purchases and donations to the scholarship fund. Gregory Ohl (Coral Springs Charter School) and Sofia Lalinde (Pembroke Pines Charter High School) also won awards. “I am so impressed by the students and their dedication to their education,” said Patty Asseff, president of Broward League of Cities. “They will become tomorrow’s leaders. Each scholarship winner has demonstrated hard work and community involvement, and we’re honored to help these deserving students achieve their education goals.” Blake graduated from Cooper City High School, where he was involved in his school’s debate team, DECA and the National Honor Society. He was ranked 9th out of 528 seniors.w In addition to his school-related activities, he participated in the Freedom Foundation Summit at Valley Forge National Historical Park last summer, and volunteered with Organizing for America to helping get people registered to vote. He has interned with Senator Eleanor Sobel, D-FL, and during that
time proposed a bill for an anti-bullying course for elementary school students. Blake plans on a double major in political science and philosophy and wants to attend law school. His future career aspirations include being a lobbyist. Annabel Campo graduated from Western High School, where she founded the Social Activism Club aimed at allowing students to become more aware of political and social issues. She was appointed to the Town of Davie Youth Education and Safety Advisory Board and chosen as a member of Congressman Ted Deutch’s, D-FL, Congressional Youth Cabinet. She has participated in Weston University and the Davie Public Affairs Academy. She found her passion for public service while reading U.S. Supreme Court briefings and meeting with local elected officials to learn about agenda items. Annabel plans to major in government at Cornell University. Her aspirations include attending law school and running for Congress. The Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and resolving issues facing Broward County’s 31 cities and municipalities. Membership is made up of elected officials from municipal governments and area businesses. In addition to its Scholarship for Government Studies program, the Broward League of Cities manages several other annual initiatives that support students, including the Student Ambassador program and Speakers’ Bureau. hat does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? More than you think... Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate, because there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women as it relates to their pregnancies, as well as their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy, including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the more decreased the risk of cavities is in general, and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

he government formed The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) (consumerfinance.gov). This is a 21st century agency that “helps consumer finance markets work” by making rules more effective, by consistently and fairly enforcing those rules, and by empowering consumers to take more control over their economic lives. According to the Florida Realtors: Under the closing process changes [slated to take place October 1, 2015 extended from August 1, 2015], which were developed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the HUD-1 settlement form, the Good Faith Estimate and the Truth in Lending Act disclosure form will be consolidated into two new forms, a Loan Estimate and a Closing Disclosure. (Note that there were more single family homes sold in Broward County.) The Closing Disclosure must be given to the buyer three days before closing, and if certain changes are made after that point, the closing would be delayed another three days. CFPB Director Richard Cordray stated only three types of changes could lead to a closing delay: ▸▸ A change in the loan product (such as from a fixed-rate loan to an adjustable-rate loan), ▸▸ The addition of a prepayment penalty, or ▸▸ A change in the annual percentage rate of more than 1/8 percent (1/4 percent in the case of an adjustable-rate loan). Although only these three events would trigger a delay, settlement service experts who have studied the changes say other events could unintentionally force delays as well. For example, lenders will have to delay the closing if parties agree at the closing to make even small or routine changes to what conveys to the buyer. In addition, as a practical matter, lenders will need to get the Closing Disclosure finalized a week before the closing to ensure the buyer gets it within the three-day time frame. Cash buyers often times opt to obtain a mortgage because of the current, historically low rates. Therefore, they would also be affected by the above changes. Real Estate brokers certainly appreciate the delay by the CFPB until October 1, 2015. None of us wants any delay in our resale market. Nearly 70% of the U.S. economy is based on personal consumption. A reduction in consumer spending contributes to a downward spiral in the economy. Delays in closings affect other Real Estate goods and services. If you are desirous of selling and closing before the end of summer, you may want to consider putting your home on the market now. You could avoid some angst while the government, lenders and closing agents iron out this new closing procedure.

A
s we go through our daily lives, we often come upon situations which require us to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions can be minor in nature and other times they can be somewhat more complex. None of them compares to the decision a person has to make in deciding if they should pursue a divorce from their spouse. I hear these questions almost every day from either prospective or existing clients: “Should I stay married or get a divorce?” “Should I accept this deal or go to trial?” “What should I do?” Unfortunately, divorce attorneys don’t always have the answers. I can certainly advise a client based upon my 35 plus years of experience, but in reality the decision must always be that of the client. When I meet with a prospective new client who is considering a divorce, I am often asked for my opinion as to what he or she should do. I explain that I do not ever encourage an individual to get divorced, but obviously sometimes that is in fact their best option. It is, however, a very personal decision that he or she must make based upon all the factors involved.
I can advise a person as to the law and how his or her case will probably get resolved. I say probably, because when there are two parties involved it is impossible to predict what the other party will be seeking. I often explain to a client that no matter how reasonable they may be, the process will also depend upon the reasonableness of their spouse. So I am asked, “What should I do?” I tell them that it is their decision and they will know when it is time to make that decision. I have had individuals return to retain my services one or even two years after their initial consultation. It took that long to be able to answer the question, “What should I do?” Once the process has begun, I am also often asked, “What should I do?” when faced with the decision to either enter into a marital settlement agreement or proceed to trial. Once again, I can advise them based upon the law and my experience, but no attorney can ever guarantee a particular result if the case goes to trial. Often times the agreement is extremely fair and equitable and, as such, I advise my client that it is a good deal for them and they should certainly consider it. If the offer is equal to “their worst day in court,” then the decision is also fairly easy - why settle a case when you will probably get better results from a judge. Of course the usual reason is financial, since it costs more money to go to trial than to settle. We sometimes have clients who disregard our advice and accept a “deal,” which may not be the best that they can receive. Of course, it is ultimately their decision. So, in reality the person who can best answer the question “What should I do?” is the client. Of course, I can only hope that decision is made after they consider my advice. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

this program. The BSO Explorer Program is a successful example of how mentors can instill responsibility, leadership, teamwork and self-reliance skills in young people. Many of our professional BSO deputies and firefighters started out as young Explorers. Yet, its purpose is not to make every young person a deputy or firefighter. Instead, it is primarily designed to help them develop the necessary character traits that will lead them to make wise choices as adults. This free program gives qualified young men and women, ages 14 to 21, the opportunity to be part of a team. It also allows them to make real decisions and see the positive consequences of those choices. Explorers learn in a safe environment where they are neither bullied nor babied. They are treated like adults and are held accountable for their actions inside and outside of the program. Explorers participate in community policing and fire safety projects including child fingerprinting, school safety seminars, traffic control and crime prevention programs. Members who are at least 16 years of age are also allowed to go on “ride-alongs” with BSO patrol deputies during their normal shifts. BSO is committed to investing in our children and instilling life skills they need to be our future leaders and role models. I want to keep kids on the right track to ensure their future successes. When I became sheriff in 2013, the Explorer program had only 70 participants. Today, we have proudly tripled participation. Recently we added a BSO Explorer Cadet Program to extend these great opportunities to children as young as 11 years of age. Longtime Explorers can participate in up to a decade of mentoring, robust experiences, positive growth and a sense of belonging. Best of all, Explorers take part in community outreach activities that make a positive impact on the lives of so many. Recently many of the participants made a very special visit to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to lift spirits of sick patients and their families. Everyone has a role to play in making our community a better and safer place for all. Explorers learn that in the program, as in life, the more you give, the more you get back. What the young men and women learn in this program they bring back and share with their neighborhoods, their schools and families, proving it really does take a village. Get involved. Make a difference.

Frank Walker State Farm Insurance Has You Covered By Debby Teich
A
t Frank Walker State Farm Insurance Co., agents understand that your house is your home, your car is your freedom, and your family is everything. The agency offers both insurance and financial services to meet each client’s individual needs. Frank Walker, owner/agent, answered some frequently asked questions about Frank Walker State Farm Insurance Co.
Describe your team’s experience. I have been a State Farm Agent for more than 30 years. Together with my team, we have more than 60 years of insurance experience. You can feel confident you are getting the wellinformed, proactive and professional service you deserve. What products do you offer? We have over 100 insurance and financial products to meet our client’s individual needs. In addition to insurance coverage, we offer retirement planning, vehicle loans, home mortgages, CDs, savings and checking accounts. Why can State Farm offer low rates? State Farm doesn’t deal in cash bankThe team has more than 60 years ing. Since it is a virtual bank, of insurance experience. we are able to offer great rates. Our car finance rates and mortgage rates are awesome! We pay higher interest rates on checking, savings, money market accounts, etc. Since we don’t have to pay salaries or brick and mortar costs like banks do, we can give more back in interest to your account.
Do you offer Life insurance planning? One of my specialties is Life insurance planning. It is the most rewarding, necessary and underutilized product. People die without it and their families struggle. I tell my clients, “It’s not about you; it’s about your family.” I don’t like to talk about death. I would rather talk about the lives they leave behind. What distinguishes you from your competition? Our mission is to help our clients manage the risk of everyday life, recover from the unexpected, and realize their dreams. Frank Walker, owner/agent Do you review client portfolios? Yes. One of the most important things I do is to review our clients’ portfolios on a scheduled basis. This way, the information can be updated, changes can be made if needed, and I have an opportunity to learn more about my clients and their specific needs. It’s not about selling. It’s about developing a personal relationship with each client and understanding their needs.
What is unique about State Farm? State Farm has a unique customer platform. We deliver service to our clients in the agent’s office, face to face. We service those clients 24/7 through our call centers and we allow 24 hour access to your account online. Most companies do not do all of this and none of them deliver like State Farm. Frank Walker State Farm Insurance is located at 12330 SW 53rd St, Suite 711, in Cooper City.
