Cool Off at Cooper City’s New Splash Pad Community News

By Debby Teich

T

he City of Cooper City recently held the grand opening of the new Splash Pad, located at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center. The splash pad has several components that spray water, including a palm tree, whale’s tail, and circle ring. There are also a few bubblers in the ground that spray water up. It is geared towards children 10 and under. “Many residents have shown great interest in having a splash pad in Cooper City,” said Jill Ankney, aquatic specialist. “The splash pad will offer relief from the upcoming summer heat and provide an outlet for families to spend time together.” Over 500 people enjoyed the event, which had something for everyone, including swimming, music, prizes, giveaways, games (limbo, hula hoop contest) and more. After Mayor Greg Ross and City Commissioners cut the ribbon, 7-year-old Cooper City resident Kiera Reilly pressed the activator to turn on the fountains. “This is the beginning step to teach every child to swim,” said Commissioner James Curran. “The splash pad, in conjunction with Cooper City’s recreation swim programs, will help transform our children from ‘pollywogs’ to expert dolphin swimmers.” The Splash Pad’s regular hours of operation will Monday-Friday, from 11am-8pm and Saturday-Sunday, from 11am-5pm. Daily rates for the use of the pool/splash pad for Cooper City residents are: children $1.50, teens $1.50, adults $2, and seniors (62+) $1.50. Daily rates for the use of the pool/ splash pad for non-residents are: children $2, teens $3, adults $4 and seniors (62+) $3.

at Disney World; received two invitations to audition for America’s Got Talent; performed at the Hollywood Hard Rock Café, and much more. In October, the Cloggers will perform on Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas. The South Florida Cloggers meet at Robbins Lodge. It is a family atmosphere, with students that range in age from 2 to 80. During the season, from October to March, they perform several shows each weekend. Any proceeds raised through raffles and the silent auction will be used to help the South Florida Cloggers pay for travel expenses for clogging competitions.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 08/31/16) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Melissa or Annie for an appointment. HOPE Outreach’s Canstruction Event Helps Fight Hunger SECTION COMMUNITY community HEAD NEWS news

R

eports estimate that one in six Broward County residents suffer from hunger. Last month, Davie-based nonprofit HOPE Outreach Center did its part to help put a lid on hunger. HOPE hosted the 2nd Annual Canstruction, a unique and creative event in which teams from local businesses built large structures made from over 25,000 canned goods. After the creations were assessed by a panel of judges, all of the cans were donated to local food pantries for distribution throughout the county. “Canstruction was a wonderful event that attracted teams from last year, as well as new companies - all looking to make a difference and help battle hunger, which is a serious issue right here in South Florida,” said Helen Shinners, Executive Director of HOPE Miller Construction Outreach Center. “This kind Cans of Hope of event builds camaraderie and offers truly tangible results. The HOPE Outreach Center offers an immediate “hand up” to people in the community who find themselves suddenly unable to make ends meet due to: job loss, disability, health crisis, and/or some other emergency circumstance. Last year alone, the HOPE (an acronym for Helping Other People Everyday) Outreach Center provided 100 tons of food to Broward County residents. According to Shinners, the contest is well timed. In the summer, donations to the pantry typically diminish, while demand increases because children no longer have access to free and reduced school meal programs. Between the structures and the donation station where the public contributed canned goods at the mall during the event, 27,253 cans were collected, including vegetables, meat, fruits, grains and more. The benefitting pantries include: HOPE Outreach Center, LifeNet4Families, Soref JCC – WECARE Food Pantry and Pantry of Broward. In addition, the event drew thousands of visitors and made a real impact in increasing awareness of the hunger issues right here in Broward County. The winners were: ▸ Juror’s Favorite – Miller Construction ▸ Honorable Mention – Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital ▸ Greatest Impact on Hunger – Ultimate Software ▸ People’s Choice – Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital ▸ Best Use of Labels – Miller Construction ▸ Best Meal – Miller Construction ▸ Structural Ingenuity – Allison James Estates & Homes Elite For information on Hope Outreach Center, visit www.hopeoutreachfl.org.

Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department Educates Children on Water Safety community news X

By Debby Teich

F

lorida loses more children under the age of five to accidental drowning than any other state. Drowning is a silent catastrophe that can occur within minutes of leaving to answer a phone call or grab a towel. The Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department has teamed up with the Florida Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Advisory Committee to educate and encourage safe water habits to prevent drowning for Davie’s youngest residents and visitors. During EMS week in May, EMSC distributed copies of Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim, along with packets containing a water safety song, coloringxactivity, and Water Watcher tags (for adults), to Davie Fire Rescue and other interested EMS agencies in the state. Written for children ages two through six, the book conveys an important message of how to be safe near the water. In the story, Stewie, a duck who wants to swim with the “big ducks,” is prevented from going in the water by his older sister until he learns the water safety rules. Davie Fire Rescue visited four schools to read the book to students

and educate them on water safety. They also distributed packets to 15 schools. “Davie Fire Rescue recognizes that drowning is the leading cause of death for Florida kids in this age group,” said Julie Downey, Fire Chief. “A child can enter a pool in the time it takes a babysitter to answer the phone or start a load of laundry. Nothing replaces vigilant adult supervision, but homes should also have door alarms and pools should have locked gates.” Kim and Stew Leonard wrote Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim after their 21-month old toddler lost his life in a drowning accident. They pledged that they would do everything they could to prevent this tragedy from striking other families. In 1990, they founded the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation in memory of their son. The Foundation has raised more than $1 million dollars to go towards water safety awareness and education, including swim scholarships and lifeguard training. They also wrote and published a second book, Swimming Lessons with Stewie the Duck. There is no cost to participate and students are provided with complimentary tickets to approximately 60 different shows each year to attend, review and promote. Julia has been interested in the arts since the age of two. “I love the performing aspect of the arts,” said Julia. “I love the feeling I get when performing knowing I am doing the thing I love most in this world, while making others happy.” Julia says she enjoyed the Teen Ambassador program and plans to apply for the upcoming year. “I got to watch a variety of shows that came to the Broward Center,” said Julia. “I got to ask questions and learn about so many different aspects of the arts from people who are in the business. I had a platform where I could share my passion for the arts with others through my own opinions and reviews. Being a Teen Ambassador also gave me a real sense of community. ix-year-old Brandon Becker loves to watch the fire engines as they race down the street. He recently attended the 18th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event, where he had an opportunity to see, touch, and explore a fire truck, as well as some other big trucks and vehicles. He also met some of the people who drive them. Over 2,000 people attended the event at the Cooper City Sports Complex. “I got to meet a real fireman, climb inside of the truck, and sit in the driver’s seat,” said Brandon. “It was the best day of my life.” There were 39 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies, community busi-

nesses and private collectors. BSO Fire and Police Departments provided SWAT, Hazmat equipment trucks, a Smart car with Macie (the BSO search dog), an air boat, police fleet services, fire paramedics and fire trucks, including a restored fire truck that the children were allowed to paint. Members of the Public Works and Utilities Departments were present and Waste Management showed kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There was a lawn mower, blower, pressure washer, vac con truck, and front end loader, as well as a Publix freezer semi, seven military vehicles, Eloise the musical fire engine and more. Children also enjoyed a variety of fun activities, such

as a bounce house, obstacle course, rock wall, coloring and face painting. “The community had an opportunity to see trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes,” said Christine Averill, Recreation Director. “They learned more about what they do and how they operate. The event was a huge success and we appreciate the governmental agencies, local businesses and private individuals that came out to support and give back to their community.” Next year’s event will be held on June 24. Dance Theatre Offers Much More Than Training

These select members of the Dance Theatre Company (DTC) will be heading to New York City this November to perform in the 90th Anniversary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

N

ow in its 24th season serving South Florida, Dance Theatre continues to provide our community with excellence in dance education. Winners of both the prestigious “Best of the West” and the coveted “Reader’s Choice” awards for the past several years, its unique combination of love and learning has allowed Dance Theatre to dominate the local dance landscape. So what is it that makes this place so special? Why do dancers of every age, skill level and ambition seek to make Dance Theatre their home away from home? “It’s simple,” said owner Michelle McGrath Gerlick. “We hire the best instructors in the business, provide our students with only the most current training techniques, and most importantly, treat every child who walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” Although Gerlick recognizes that awards are nice and trophies are beautiful, she says they are more focused on training and serving as positive role models. “We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate,” said Gerlick. “It is incumbent upon us to do it thoroughly. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models, and we care deeply about the impact we have on these children’s lives. When a parent

Dance Theatre’s X-treme Team (DTX)

tells me their daughter has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Clearly, people have taken notice. With three schools in Broward, one in Wellington, and yet another in Sandy Springs, Georgia, Dance Theatre is currently home to thousands of young dancers. It has grown into the largest school of its kind anywhere in the Southeastern U.S. It is also home to DTC, a dance company over 150 strong, which performs at amazing local venues like Miami Heat and Florida Marlins games. This year, DTC has been invited to travel to New York City to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. All of South Florida will be cheering them on Thanksgiving morning by tuning in to NBC to watch them live. In addition, Dance Theatre boasts the national champion DTX Competition Team, an elite group of dancers who challenge all the best from other schools. Last month, team DTX competed at the On Stage America National Finals in Orlando. They garnered the top two highest scoring dances, and the

coveted title of Senior Miss on Stage America went to Dance Theatre’s own Chiara Gonzalez. DTX’s Jessica Luckman was 1st runner up and DTX’s team captain, Jackie Keats, was 2nd runner up. If any prospective dancers still need convincing, consider this… Dance Theatre is so good that it has attracted the attention of some other South Florida heavyweights. Most recently, the Miami Dolphins asked them to design, choreograph and perform the entire halftime show for their Breast Cancer Awareness game played last October. DTC, DTX, and the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders joined forces to entertain the crowd and raise awareness about this disease which affects so many. “We were so honored, so humbled, and so excited for the opportunity to show our support for this important cause,” said Gerlick. The Dolphins were so impressed that Dance Theatre has now been asked to do it again at the Dolphin-Jets game on November 6th, a performance which will honor our U.S. veterans. “This is another amazing opportunity to showcase our girls, and show our support for these incredible members of our armed forces,” said Gerlick. “We are truly blessed.” Dance Theatre offers a comprehensive program where dancers ages 2 1/2 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc.

To join the Dance Theatre family, call the studio at 954-434-4443 and speak to someone today; visit www.dancetheatre.net, view the appropriate Fall Schedule, and fill out the simple online registration form; or register in person at the studio, which is open all summer (thru August 12), Monday – Friday, from 8:30am – 5:30pm. The fall session begins on August 22.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement for You? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

H

ave you noticed that you are a bit more irritable than usual? Are you having difficulty sleeping? Is your skin dry? Do you suffer from a lack of sex drive? Are you sometimes confused and feeling that you just can’t think straight? Are you gaining weight, losing muscle mass, and feeling sluggish, depressed or irritable? Are you having hot flashes that are impacting your daily living? If you have felt any of these symptoms, you are not alone! Millions of men and women go through this not realizing that their feelings are like this because of the possibility of a hormone deficiency or imbalance. As you age, your body produces lower levels of hormones that are vital to your health and well-being. By bringing your hormones back to the levels they were during your 30’s, you can begin to feel and look your absolute best. Through Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement, you can experience improved energy and greater enjoyment of life. Bio-Identical hormones are manufactured in the lab to have the same molecular structure as the hormones made naturally by your own body. The great appeal of bio-identical hormones is that they are natural hormones, which have been shown to be safe and effective with minimal side effects.

A comprehensive medical history, physical exam and evaluation of hormone levels such as estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, testosterone and growth hormone obtained by blood, urine or salvia will determine your unique clinical picture. An individualized program is then developed to cater to your specific needs of hormonal deficiencies. The replacement of these hormonal deficiencies with bio-identical hormones may be in the form of creams, pills, or pellets. Most individuals experience an almost immediate relief of symptoms with bio-identical hormone replacement; however, for some it can take up to two weeks. To optimally monitor hormone levels and make adjustments in medications, lab testing along with physical exam and evaluation may be repeated every 3-6 months. If you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, natural hormones may relieve your symptoms, improving your health from the inside out. Get your energy back and feel strong and vital once again. Improve your sexdrive; sleep better; lose weight; have more focused thinking; and get clearer, younger looking skin. his month, women can join the Women’s Over 40 Soccer League and/or the Women’s Over 30 Softball League. Both are an opportunity for women to get in shape and make new friends, as well as to acquire and/or refine their soccer and softball skills. The games are family friendly, offering husbands and children a chance to cheer for their favorite players. Soccer At 69 years young, Patsy Gibbs formed the Women’s Over 40 Soccer League earlier in the year, so she could continue to play the sport she loves. Gibbs joined her first soccer league in her late 30’s and has been a soccer fan ever since. In 1995, she and Gayle Smitter formed the Michelob Light Women’s Recreational Soccer League. Twenty years later, the league still exists as the Broward Women’s Sports Program in Pembroke Pines for women 30+. “A healthy body is a healthy mind,” said Gibbs. “Playing a fun game like soccer is a great way to stay in shape physically and mentally.” There were four teams in the January league and Gibbs is hoping for more in the fall. The league is geared towards recreational or beginner “soccer moms” and even “soccer grand moms.” To keep it fun and friendly, registration is for individuals only (no team registrations) and each team

Their teammate one season might be their opponent during the next one. Some of the more traditional soccer rules have been altered to make the league more beginnerfriendly. The league uses FIFA rules with the following recreational exceptions: no “off sides”; goalie safety area; “on-the-fly” substitution; and no slide tackling. The games are played on Friday evenings at 6:45 and 8pm. “We’ve all watched our kids play the game and now it’s our turn,” said Gibbs. “The children have an

Elementary Students Visit Publix in Cooper City Commons By Debby Teich

school news

A

fter a visit to Publix in Cooper City Commons, a group of students at Pembroke Pines Elementary has a much better understanding of how math makes “cents.” This is just one of the many lessons that James Gooze, Publix store manager, has been teaching them throughout the year as part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. Throughout the school year, Gooze, along with customer staff members Kelly O’Donnell and Carey Tavio, met with students in Jessny Burch’s 2nd grade class to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. They used hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. For the last lesson, the students took a field trip to the Cooper City Commons Publix to see where they work. Jennifer Alexander’s 4th grade class joined them. “The students learned about 12 different jobs

in the store,” said Gooze, who has participated in KAPOW for the last for years. “The department managers explained what they do and the kids had an opportunity to try many of the jobs.” The students used tools to decorate cookies; worked in the check-out line and counted money; learned about the store’s recycling program; visited the meat and produce departments; built store displays; stocked shelves and much more. “The kids loved it,” said Gooze. “They had an opportunity to experience new things. Some of these kids may be the next Publix customer, store manager or employee. Through KAPOW, we have an opportunity to help them develop the skills they need in order to be successful in any career.” Gooze says that he and his team plan to participate in the program again next year. “KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida. For information about volunteering, or your school or business becoming a KAPOW partner, visit www.kapowlfs.wordpress.com or send an email to john.casbarro@gmail.com.

Concussions: What You Need to Know The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.3 – 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur every year Farah Tejpar, MD in the United Sports Health Specialist States. With more information coming out about the long-term effects of a concussion including chronic neurological disorders, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of this often hard-to-spot injury. Q: What is a concussion? A: A concussion is a traumatically induced transient brain injury. It can present with a variety of symptoms that typically resolve over days to weeks. An athlete can suffer a concussion in any sport. Athletes who suffer a concussion

are three to five times more likely to suffer a second concussion. Q: What are the signs of a concussion? • A dazed or stunned appearance • Confusion or clumsiness • Slow responses to questions • Personality or behavioral changes • Loss of consciousness – even temporary • Forgets plays or assignments • Forgetting the play prior to or after the hit Q: What are the symptoms of a concussion? • Headache • Nausea • Balance problems • Blurry vision • Sensitivity to light and noise • Changed sleep patterns • Trouble concentrating • Depression

Let us direct you to the best care. Access. Anytime. Anywhere.

Q: What is the recovery time after suffering a concussion? A: The recovery time is unique to each patient. It is important for the athlete to sit out until the concussion is fully healed and the symptoms have subsided. This typically takes one to two weeks, but can sometimes take a month or longer. Suffering a repeat concussion, while recovering from a previous concussion, is dangerous. It can lead to prolonged symptoms and in some cases long-term neurological consequences.

P

arents, it’s time to put on your thinking caps for a quick quiz; don’t worry, you won’t be graded. But knowing the answers can help you get your child off to a good start to the school year. Overcoming First Day Jitters You can help reduce your child’s anxiety about going to school by: A.) Describing what school will be like and what will happen during the day. B.) Taking your child to visit the school before classes begin. C.) Setting up play dates with other children outside of school. D.) All of the above. The answer is D. Parents can help make school an exciting and positive experience for their children by following these simple steps along with establishing a regular routine prior to the start of the school year. Once school has started, parents should talk with their children about school activities and give them positive feedback about their new experiences. Packing a Lunch Pack a lunch for your child that: A.) Contains whole-grain breads and lean meat. B.) Includes water or milk instead of soda. C.) Uses a cold pack or thermos to maintain proper food temperatures. D.) All of the above. The answer is D. A healthy diet not only helps children learn and grow, but may also help prevent obesity and diabetes. By limiting fast food and junk food, and eating a nutritious lunch, your child will have more energy to finish school and enjoy after-school activities. Okay parents, you’re halfway finished with this quiz. Just a couple more correct answers and you’ll have an A+. Buying Lunch at School Your child brings home the school menu. You: A.) Review the school menu with your child and recommend healthier items. B.) Allow your child to choose a favorite item on occasion. C.) Encourage your child to take a lunch from home sometimes. D.) All of the above. The answer is D. Teach children how to make healthy food choices that add up to a big nutritional difference. They can choose skim milk instead of fruit punch; trail mix instead of cookies; or baked chips instead of a fried snack. Eating healthy today can reduce the risk of weight-related diseases later. Carrying a Backpack Parents should buy a backpack for their child that: A.) Has wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. B.) Weighs less than 10 to 20 percent of the child’s body weight when packed. C.) May have rollers. D.) All of the above. The answer is D. Children need to pack light and organize their backpacks so heavier items are in the center of the back. Children should avoid wearing it on one shoulder since this may strain muscles and increase curvature of the spine. Great job parents! With your support and understanding, the first days of school can be fun and memorable for your child. Don’t forget to point out the exciting things about going back to school, such as seeing old friends and making new ones. The Emergency Center of Davie is located at 10230 W. 10 Reasons You Need A Professional Real Estate Agent

T

here are many reasons why you need a professional Real Estate Agent. Here are 10 of them. 1. Knowledge. The public thinks that Google has all the answers and the aggregators have all the home value algorithms correct. Wrong. Evaluating a home’s value, whether for a buyer or a seller, is a tedious task using all kinds of metrics – not just the MLS system. 2. The market. A professional will educate you as to the REAL market. A professional with experience can use third-party testimonials to educate you as to “what happened to the last buyer or seller who did that . . .” to prevent you from making expensive mistakes that could lead to difficulties in resales. 3. Problems that arise. What happens when the inspection reveals issues that may result in a cancellation of the contract? Can you get your deposit monies back? Why did my real estate agent use the FR-BAR AS-IS contract? Did she/he use the latest version of the contract? What are the consequences if s/he did not? A trained professional keeps up with contract law and the changes thereto. For instance, if an agent uses an outdated contract, that instrument would not hold up in a court of law and could result in a bad result for the client. 4. Overcoming objections. A professional is trained in handling any objection by any party and has ample resources in which to back her up. An experienced agent has run into the same issues time and time again and knows the probable outcome. 5. Effective negotiation skills. How does your agent formulate a strategy? How much should you offer or counteroffer? Will your response create rejection of your offer? What about multiple offers? Could you facilitate, manage and negotiate effectively without rise to ethics violations or violating federal housing laws? Your agent has objectivity when it comes to negotiating the best outcome for the client. The parties are too subjective and may get too emotionally involved in the process. Objectivity is key to closing. 6. Strategic planning. A professional has a plan, a timeline, and sets the expectations of her clients. 7. Marketing. Photography, virtual tours, websites, blogs, caravans, social media, newspapers, and magazines . . . need I say more? 8. Social and personal networking. Can you broadcast your property across numerous websites — locally, nationally and internationally? 9. Connections. Depending on their spheres of influence, professionals have connections. Agents market to other agents and how one does business (reputation in the industry) has an important role as to whether or not your home gets shown or your offer gets presented. 10. Trusted recommendations. Who else can you share your, fears and worries? Your friends and family may instill fear. Your agent will allay those fears and concerns. The buying and selling process is not something you want to tackle alone. Let a real estate professional be your trusted advisor leading you through the maze of possibilities. The bottom line – let me save you money and let me make you money. That’s my job. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. Just a Baby Tooth

• Burial

By Dr. Maria Grosman

• Advance Planning

ou are accompanying your child for their regularly scheduled visit to the dentist and you hear those dreaded words, “Your child has a cavity.” Initial emotions usually consist of anger. You know that you have purchased every dental tool on the dental isle of the pharmacy. There are three spin brushes sitting on the counter (Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Yellow Angry Bird, and Monsters Inc.). The toothpaste is bubble gum flavored. The drawer contains 300 dinosaur floss handles, a water irrigation system and two fluoride mouth rinses. The lectures about brushing after every meal occur at least once a week. Do you really have to brush their teeth for them at this age? What could you possibly take away from or bribe them with to achieve better dental care? After getting yourself together, anger subsides and reality sets in. You are not a dentist, but you know that cavities do not go away. They get bigger and they can become painful. Additionally, experience tells you that once pain begins, it usually starts on the weekend when the dentist office is closed. So what are the choices for treatment? You then find out that the cavity is on a baby molar, which is a tooth located in the back of the mouth. It is a moderately deep cavity. The choice is to restore the tooth (some form of filling depending on the extent of decay), extract the tooth, or do nothing. As we already mentioned, the last choice is not usually a very practical option unless the tooth was about to fall out on its own. Then it dawns on you that it is “just a baby tooth” and an adult tooth will follow. In this particular instance, considering what your insurance covers, extraction seems to be the least expensive option. Or is it? Primary teeth (aka “baby” teeth) have many very important functions. Cosmetically, the appearance of the baby teeth has a significant impact on a child’s early self perception. This is especially true of the front teeth. Functionally, the teeth are needed for the all important first stage of digestion, chewing. They also assist in proper speech and phonetics. Lastly (and to an orthodontist most importantly), is space maintenance. The baby teeth are made to hold available space for permanent teeth until they are ready for eruption into the mouth. Without holding these spaces, orthodontic treatment is sure to become more difficult, longer in time, and likely more expensive. There are situations in which the tooth is too compromised and extraction is the only option. However, if there is an option to “save” the tooth, I would more likely consider it an opportunity. It is an opportunity to maintain esthetics, speech, and in most cases save money (if considering long term saving). When I speak to my patients as well as my own children, I like to speak of the baby teeth as being just as important as permanent teeth. We must do this if we expect them to learn good habits, which will reward them into their adulthood.

Dear Friend, I just created a very interesting price chart for the three top brands of air conditioners. I was surprised when I completed the chart. I found a huge break in pricing that I wanted to share with potential clients whose A/C is over 12 years old. One system in particular has the highest SEER (Energy Savings) at a ridiculous price. If you’re curious about what it would cost to replace your A/C properly at the lowest possible price, then here is an easy way to find out.

Interesting Analogy Legally Speaking

By Evan Baron

I

, like many people have been caught up in the presidential election. This will not be a political statement, but rather a comparison of behavior. As I watched the debates and the many speeches of all the candidates, it became apparent that in many instances the issues became secondary and personal attacks moved to the forefront. It was not about moving forward, but rather throwing stones and berating the other individuals. It became petty and in many instances demonstrated a lack of maturity and civility. So, as I watched the candidates battle day after day, I began to realize that in many ways this behavior was quite similar to the atmosphere we sometimes see in a divorce. Often times the parties involved in a divorce lose focus on the issues as well. It is not about moving forward, but rather more about making the other party look bad. We hear about all the wrongs that were done and how the spouse should not be rewarded for his/her behavior. It becomes more about emotion and much less about logic and common sense. Behavior also often lacks civility and maturity. I will say that this is not the “norm,” but rather a minority of the cases.

I know many people have been “put off” by the behavior of some of the candidates. In some instances, the electorate has stopped listening. The behavior has almost becomes embarrassing to some voters. Judges can also have a similar reaction to such behavior. Since Florida is in fact a “No Fault State,” the behavior of a party is almost never an issue. It doesn’t matter why the parties are getting divorced, as long as one of the participants believes that the marriage is in fact “Irretrievably Broken.” Of course, a parent’s behavior can sometimes be an issue if it is believed that it might have a negative impact on minor children. The most difficult divorces to finalize are generally the one’s which are controlled by emotions and not by reason. I certainly understand the emotional impact of divorce, both on the participants and the children. It is difficult to put emotion aside and consider it from a distance. That is probably the most compelling reason to hire an attorney. An attorney can guide the client in the right direction and hopefully not get involved in the emotion of it all. It is important to look forward in one’s life and not just stare in the “rearview” mirror. I think the consensus is that the name calling and sometimes immature behavior of the candidates have turned much of America off. It is not the way adults are expected to act. Keep that in mind if you are involved in a divorce. I think we can agree that it doesn’t really accomplish anything. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

hen I talk with residents in the community, I’m often asked if the Broward Sheriff’s Office has been able to make real improvements to keep our county and its 1.8 million residents safer and more secure. The short answer: absolutely yes! When I became Sheriff in January 2013, Broward was in the midst of a public safety crisis. Crime had soared to unacceptable highs; our homeless and mentally ill were being treated as criminals; we were sending far too many kids to jail; and we had an agency that both failed to resemble our diverse community and struggled to connect with it. What a difference almost four years of hard work and innovative ideas can make. Thanks to BSO’s amazing sworn and civilian personnel and the agency’s progressive law enforcement initiatives, violent crime in Broward has plummeted to its lowest levels in decades. We’ve reversed the long trend of rising crime by performing exceptional police work, while incorporating new proactive approaches to crime fighting, including intelligence-led policing. Our Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (VIPER) Unit, a crime-fighting initiative that targets Broward County’s most dangerous violent criminals, and the Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT), which targets criminals who break into homes and vehicles, are two highly successful examples. Since 2012, violent offenses are down 18 percent, while burglaries have plunged a stunning 42 percent because of these two initiatives. BSO has also been quick in confronting unforeseen, new law enforcement challenges. When the highlydangerous designer drug Flakka suddenly appeared and became an out-of-control scourge in Broward, we met it head on. Within months, we effectively stamped out the deadly drug from Broward’s streets. Yet, while a strong response is warranted during certain circumstances, I am also mindful there is no onesize-fits-all approach to public safety. Through the Juvenile Civil Citation Program and P.R.O.M.I.S.E. Program, thousands of students have been kept in the classroom and out of the courtroom – avoiding criminal records while being given a chance to turn their lives around. We have also made dramatic strides with our Homeless Outreach Initiative, which connects the homeless to appropriate social services – treating them with dignity and respect instead of arrests and costly jail space. BSO has also diligently worked to bring transparency and build community trust by embracing a community policing model where law enforcement and members of Broward’s diverse communities work hand in hand to improve public safety services and make their own neighborhoods safer. Amazingly, we have accomplished far more by working with far less. As good stewards of taxpayer dollars, we have become more streamlined, smarter and efficient in tackling the public safety issues confronting us. In the years to come, I vow to continue to advance the mission and goals of BSO. My top priorities include: the expansion of our body-worn camera program so all deputies are equipped with the technology; the further development of the Civil Citation Program; and increased fraud protections for senior citizens. The past four years have brought about huge successes, and I am excited for what BSO has in store for the future. For information, visit sheriff.org.

T

he recent terrorist act in Orlando is a constant reminder of the pain humans can inflict upon each other. In the face of violence and hate, don’t be discouraged, but believe in the best of humanity. On Tuesday, June 14, a prayer vigil was held in front of Town Hall Council Chambers acknowledging our solidarity with the victims, the LGBT community, survivors, their families, and the community of the Orlando mass shooting. The prayer vigil was well attended and sent a message to Mayor Buddy Dyer of Orlando that we are standing with and behind him. “We are Orlando” and “Love Always Wins” are two rallying cries that emanated from the speakers and those that gathered to share their grief. The Annual Mayor’s Scholarship Fund has been a huge success over the years. The scholarship fund provides two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors who have an interest, or who are pursuing a career in Public Affairs. As in previous years, we received several outstanding applications from Davie students. I partner each year with the Youth Education and Safety Advisory Committee (YESAC) to review and select the winners. The two students who were chosen to receive the scholarship are Western High School students Rachel Merry and Dylan Shaffer. What stood out most to me about these students are: both have over 4.0 GPAs, extensive documented service hours, participation in leadership and extra-curricular activities, honors awards, and hosts of other accolades. I presented the checks along, with a Davie belt buckle, at Western High School’s awards program. The Public Affairs Academy is another educational initiative I started several years ago to help students understand the role each person plays in ensuring the success of our Town. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the students who participated and successfully graduated from the 2016 Town of Davie Public Affairs Academy. Congratulations to Western High School students Jorge Evaristo, Brianne Barbakoff, Brandon Duvdivani, Marcos Salas, Carlo Capulong, and Brandon Candela; Nova High School student Rina Lakhlani; and College Academy at Broward College student Brooke Bambis. All the students graduated at the May 18 Town Council Meeting. Students who completed the academy received a certificate of completion, a letter of recommendation from the Department Director they shadowed, a Town lapel pin, and a Town of Davie shirt. It was such an immense pleasure to have these students experience hands-on the day-to-day activities that are carried out for the success of the Town. I would like to welcome a new farmers market to our community, Marando Farms at Davie. The grand opening of the farmers market will be held in October. It is located on Davie Road, at the former Batten’s Farmer’s Market and Davie Agri-Tourism Center. Ten acres of land will be filled with crops, animals, and even a farm-to-table restaurant with Broward’s most iconic barbecue joint, the Georgia Pig. It is distinguished by the life size black horse at the entrance. The market will feature organic, fresh local produce and fresh organic eggs; host agricultural workshops and seminars; and provide tours and educational classes. I look forward to this farmers market and what it will have to offer to the Town.
