Make Time for Family

T

his summer ’ s World Cup fever has subsided,

vacation memories are slowly fading away, and the kids are settling back into their school routines. Our lives are slowly returning to “normal.” Before we become bogged down with after school activities, sports and music lessons, let us not forget that the fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun family time. Best of all, the sun is not quite so scorching hot, but the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. So, turn the TVs and game consoles off for a bit and get out there and enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, visit the oldest town in North America (Saint Augustine), catch some fish, or visit your favorite characters in the theme parks of Orlando and Tampa. Whatever you choose to do, do it with family and friends. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day at school or work, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company whenever you can. Sincerely, Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Davie Girl Wins a Role in Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy By Debby Teich

K

ellie K essling , 11, of Davie has been passionate about dance ,

since she took her first class at age three. In the future, she hopes to dance professionally and teach dance. After performing in the Broadway production of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, she may be well on her way to realizing her dreams. In July, Kellie attended Cirque Dreams KidsTime Summer Camp at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. At the two-day camp, she participated in master classes led by experts from around the world. They taught her about the world of circus arts, including improvisation, physical comedy, acrobatics and body movement. She also had the opportunity to work with Neil Goldberg, renowned Broadway director and founder of “Cirque Dreams,” in a variety of scenes from Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy. Goldberg was trying to determine if any of the kids at the camp had the talent worthy of joining the production, which would start a few days later at the Broward Center. After seeing Kellie audition, he decided that she was the program’s shining star. “Kellie has a special gift - talent, creativity and imagination,” said Goldberg. “Inviting her to train, rehearse and appear on stage with 25 amazing artists from around the world in the Broadway production of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy is not only a once in a lifetime opportunity, but the mission of the Cirque Dreams KidsTime educational program and camp. All of South Florida was able to witness a star-in-the-making.” Kellie has been in television commercials and television shows, and has performed on stage. This was the first time, however, that she worked with professionals of this caliber or performed in a Broadway production. After camp ended, she spent the next few days at the Cirque Dreams production studio working with the “Contortionist Sisters,” Mongolians Erdenesuvd Ganbaatar and Buyankhishig Ganbaatar. The show, which ran from July 22-27, included an international cast of aerialists, contortionists, acrobats, jugglers, and musicians from seven different countries. Kellie played the role of “Grasshopper,” which was created for her. She had a solo performance and appeared several times throughout the show. Her role involved tricks, acrobatics and dancing. “The easiest part of the show was making new friends,” said Kellie. “The hardest part was remembering all of my cues. I had over 50! I want to thank Neil Goldberg for giving me such an amazing opportunity and for believing in me.” Lisa Kessling, her mother, said it was a wonderful experience for Kellie. “The entire cast welcomed her to their stage and treated her with so much respect,” said Kessling. What is up next for Kellie? She is hoping to dance on the television hit “So You Think You Can Dance.” She would also love to dance with Maddie Ziegler.

Davie Resident Named SEAS/Smart Stage Volunteer of the Year By Debby Teich

S

hirley Sargent of Davie has always loved the performing

arts. As a volunteer at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, she has been able to enjoy her passion and also help to expose youth to the arts at a young age. She was recently named the 2013-2014 “SEAS/Smart Stage Volunteer of the Year” for her contributions. She was presented with a commemorative award plaque and flowers at a luncheon. Sargent has been volunteering for the Broward Center since 2006, and estimates that she spends 10 to 15 hours per week there. As an usher on Saturday nights, she has the opportunity to see Broadway musicals, symphonies, operas and more. Five years ago, she also began ushering for the Student Enrichment in the Arts (SEAS) program, which is a collaboration between Broward County Public Schools and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The Broward Center has one of the largest arts-in-education programs in the country. The SEAS program offers a visual style of learning by integrating arts such as music, dance and drama into the students’ education. More than 150,000 students are transported each school year to the Broward Center to attend various programs free of charge. Regardless of socio-economic standing,

the SEAS program is available to all schools, teachers and students. This ensures that all students have the opportunity to become appreciators and producers of the arts. Through the SEAS program, Sargent says that the kids have gotten exposure to lessons on bullying, science, sharing, and more. Teachers are given a lesson plan to review with their students before they attend. “The SEAS program is wonderful,” said Sargent. “It exposes the kids to performances that they might not see otherwise, and helps them to become betterrounded. We are lucky to have such a great program and I am proud to be a part of it.” When Sargent received her award, she says that they referred to her as the “quiet tornado.” “I may be quiet, but they always know that I will get the job done,” said Sargent. “I also love to interact with the children.” The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El Evolves With The Times By Jill Sharpe

T

emple Kol Ami E manu -E l , built in 1974

has been a Center for Jewish life in Broward for 40 years. In addition to traditional services, this year, Kol-Ami Emanu-El is set to launch several new ways to become a part of our Jewish community and to pray, learn, celebrate and connect with each other and Judaism in current times. TKAE’s new spiritual leader is Rabbi Howard Needleman. He is dedicated to helping to make our world a better place and inspiring others to become an agent of change. Below, Rabbi Needleman answers some questions about how the synagogue is changing to meet the needs of today’s congregants.

taneously, and each day spiritual leaders are faced with new challenges and opportunities. We have created new innovative learning programs and Bar/ Bat Mitzvah programs that are available online. Technology has allowed us to help create these options and conveniences for families. In addition to e-learning and Skype we are also finding new ways of communicating with our families to help to establish new religious and spiritual connections in time and space. With today’s many forces pulling families in so many different directions at accelerating speeds, it is the job of rabbis and Jewish leaders to help create a calm and balanced equilibrium between the social, political and technological forces that are tugging on us all. Lastly, we have created spaces and outreach opportunities to meet in person with people in the community.

You said you are expanding your Religious School and Jewish Education Programs. Can you tell us a little more about them?

Rabbi Howard Needleman. Photos Courtesy of Alison Frank

As a Spiritual Leader, what are you most inspired by? During my years as a rabbinical

student, I concentrated my research on Jewish philosophy. I was always intrigued by the way in which Judaism was able to take what was cutting edge in the world and incorporate it into the themes and trends of the times. It is hard to speak of any aspect of Jewish life without seeing the role the outside world played in helping to shape it both culturally and historically.

In our own day and age this is also true. Judaism of the 21st century is being shaped by the global post-millennial world of technology and the 24/7/365 interconnectedness of our lives and world. We Skype, we live stream, we email blast, we text, we Facebook and Instagram. Today, our daily world is shaped by social media and technology and, so it is not surprising that our Jewish world is similarly evolving by and through this evolving digital world we now live in. So, what inspires me is to see and be a part of our changing Jewish world which both evolves in so many aspects, but which also remains rooted in time tested texts and core Jewish values. This inspires me.

How have the needs of congregants changed over the years and how is Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El meeting those needs?

We all know that our world is changing, that the world moves faster, information travels instan-

an any doctor effectively prescribe hor -

mones? The answer is “no.” Hormone therapy is a specialty of its own, as it has many intricacies that are not cookie cutter recipes for the treatment of clients. It is not enough to simply prescribe a treatment that is not tailor made to the individual. Having personalized dosages of medications tailored to you for the administration for the basic hormones (estrogen, progesterone and testosterone for the female client and testosterone for the male client) is often not enough to achieve optimal well-being. A physician specializing in Functional Medicine takes into account the person as a whole. The testing and administration of hormones may be just the first step to achieving balance. It might be necessary to do further testing to look at adrenals, neutracuetical supplements, lifestyle, testing for allergies, heavy metals and much more. Each client is an individual and their plan of care should be as well.

Metabolic Syndrome

It is estimated that over 25% of the US population suffers from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome is a health problem that may include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and elevated blood sugars. The risk of premature death from a heart attack is seven times more likely than for those without metabolic syndrome; this statistic is startling, since these people appear otherwise “healthy.” Aside from exercise and eating right, it is imperative to check hormones levels for both men and women. Has your Doctor checked your testosterone levels? Higher testosterone levels have been shown to independently lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. How can you afford to be without adequate hormones?

You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue. Even the healthiest person may experience adrenal fatigue at one time or another in their life due to the stressors of an illness, life crises, or a continuing difficult situation. The problem is continued adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. As adrenal fatigue continues, it is common to have some of the following symptoms: inability to lose weight, tendency to get sick often, lack of energy, unclear thinking, unexplained hair loss, allergies, reduced sex drive and much more. Your body does its best to make up for under-functioning adrenals glands, but what price are you willing to pay? Many alterations take place at the biochemical and cellular levels to compensate for the decrease in adrenal hormones associated with adrenal fatigue. Have you had your adrenal function checked? The good news is that the conditions listed above can be identified with proper testing and treated with natural pharmaceuticals, supplements and IV nutrition therapy, thus proactively promoting a wellness state and balance. To find out how you can be proactive and not reactive about your health, contact Dr. Nerette, who practices Functional Medicine and specializes in treating all types of hormones in the body to prevent disease and promote your highest state of well-being. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Davie Neighbors Gather for a Fence Painting Party By Debby Teich

O

nce a month , J ennifer Colon and her 11-year - old son , Giovanni, find a way to make someone’s world a little brighter. Last month, they reached out to the neighbors in their own development. Jennifer recently received a grant from the Town of Davie for $45,000, which enabled her to purchase a home in the Escape at Arrowhead community. After moving in, she quickly realized that many of the fences in her new neighborhood could use a fresh coat of paint. Jennifer knew that many of her neighbors were not in a position to paint, so she and her son decided to take action. They assembled a group of approximately 70 volunteers to implement the project. “We wanted to bring the residents together to help improve the appearance of their own neighborhood and raise money to help feed the poor,” said Jennifer. “We also wanted to give back to the Town of Davie to show our deep appreciation for the grant, which has changed our lives.” They set a goal to paint 27 fences at no charge to the residents. In return, the HOA agreed to donate $500 to the Bread of Life Food Pantry/A Place in Time Christian Ministries, where the mother/son team volunteers on a regular basis. “The project took on a life of its own,” said Jennifer. “Friends, family, neighbors and sponsors quickly committed to our vision. They all felt empowered to make a difference.” Local businesses, big and small, donated a variety of items for a raffle that included gift certificates for karate lessons, massages, restaurants, pressure cleaning, salon services and more. They also donated paint supplies and food for the volunteers. One lucky winner received a year of free pest control. Teams of people came out to paint and help with the event. They painted 36 fences, exceeding their goal. They also raised $769 for the food pantry. Cooper City Commissioner Lisa Mallozzi, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, and Davie Vice Mayor

Caryl Hattan were among the volunteers. “It is exciting to see all of the neighbors coming together to do a good deed for the community,” said Mayor Paul. “Everyone benefits.” “We love to get involved in what is happening in the community,” said Davie Vice Mayor Hattan. “Our motto is ‘invite us and we will come.’” Jennifer and Giovanni plan to repeat the effort in other parts of the neighborhood. “We hope that the community will continue to unite to make a difference.” Once the event was over, Jennifer and Giovanni sat down to discuss their next project. Although both of them have dealt with their own hardships throughout the years, they never let it get in the way of reaching out to others. Their dedication and humbleness inspires people to want to be a part of their efforts. “We all face some kind of challenge or disability, but it is what you do with it that is important,” said Jennifer. “There is always someone who is in greater need. Giving back does not take a lot of time; it just takes a commitment to making a difference. When we all come together and do a little, we can accomplish a lot.” Jennifer says that Giovanni comes up with most of the ideas, and they brainstorm together to find a way to implement them. Sometimes the effort is small, such as writing a kind letter or baking muffins for the police department. Other times it is on a larger scale, such as collecting school supplies for needy students or convincing Cold Stone Creamery to provide sundaes for the kids on the cancer floor of the hospital. Through his volunteer efforts, Giovanni has learned that anything is possible. Although he is still young, he has big plans for the future. “I want to be president or a lawyer, so I can continue to help make the world a better place,” said Giovanni.

Davie Honor Guard Rehearses for a Somber Tradition by debby teich

W

police officers die in the line of duty, the Davie Honor Guard is there to serve at the funeral. They recently rehearsed for a ceremony that they hope they never have to perform. The rehearsal took place on the grounds of Levitt-Weinstein Hollywood Chapel/ Beth David Cemetery, which donated the use of their facilities, a chapel, a casket, a hearse, an American Flag and a graveside set-up (tent, chairs, the lowering device) for the police department to use. The Honor Guard is an ancillary unit within the Davie Police Department that is comprised of a select group of officers and detectives. In addition to their regular police related duties, Honor Guard members perform at various venues. “The Davie Police Department’s Honor Guard is dedicated to serving the citizens of Davie, and honoring the traditions, memories, and patriotism of the people in the community,” said Lieutenant Timothy FitzGerald, who has led the Davie Honor Guard for the past three years with assistance from Sergeant Brian Pritchard. In 2013, the Honor Guard participated in 16 different events. They have already exceeded that number in 2014. They have marched in parades, presented “The Colors,” executed joint ceremonies throughout Broward County as part of the Broward County Multi-Agency Honor Guard, and more. Members of the Honor Guard also display their appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice made by dedicated men and women who die in the line of duty. They

honor these individuals through their professionalism and ceremonial displays, such as guarding the casket and the “folding of the flag.” “The hardest part of being an Honor Guard member, but perhaps the most rewarding, is serving at a fellow officer’s funeral,” said FitzGerald. “Fortunately that doesn’t happen very often. When the time comes, however, the Honor Guard rises to the occasion to honor that officer and recognize the dedication they have shown to serving the community. They make sure the officers are recognized and honored for the heroes that they are.” For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Kiwanis Club of Cooper City Continues to Reach Out to Those in Need By Debby Teich

hroughout the year , the K iwanis Club of Cooper City reaches

out to those in need. Most recently, members participated in a food drive, as well as a Christmas in July event. The Cooper City Food Truck Rally gave residents a change to indulge in some of their favorite foods. It was also an opportunity for members of the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City, with the help of Key Club members, to implement a food drive. At the Rally, they collected canned and boxed non-perishable foods, as well as supermarket gift cards, to donate to local food banks. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City also recently participated in the 13th Annual Christmas in July event, coordinated by Broward County Kiwanians in Division 23 and 24. They provided approximately 1,500 children, as well as their parents, foster parents, caregivers, or house parents, with a day of fun. Participants received backpacks filled with clothes, shoes, school supplies, books, toys, and hygiene products. The Kiwanis Club of Cooper City has been involved in the event since the club was chartered in 2007. “It is important to let the children and their guardians know that someone cares,” said Rae Levenson, club president. Miami Dolphins Give Moms a Lesson in Safety By Debby Teich

that moms really do know best. The Miami Dolphins, in conjunction with Heads Up Football, recently hosted the 1st Annual Mom’s Clinic at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. “We need to educate the decision makers of the household – moms,” said Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Manager and USA Football Master Trainer Troy Drayton, who is also a former Dolphins player. “The more information the mothers have the better.” Approximately 180 moms attended the clinic. Miami Dolphins Equipment Manager Joe Cimino showed them the proper way that helmets and

shoulder pads should fit to help reduce injuries. They learned about heat and hydration, as well as concussion awareness. They also heard a variety of guest speakers, including Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Administration Dawn Aponte, who is on the Board of Directors for USA Football; Equipment Manager Joe Cimino; Assistant Athletic Trainer Troy Maurer; Defensive End Olivier Vernon; and a panel of mothers and wives of Dolphins alumni that included Mary Dellenbach, Michelle Surtain, and Marcia Wooden. “Health and safety is a priority at every level of every sport and particularly in football,” Aponte said.

“We want to make sure parents are educated, specifically the moms. This event was an example of one of the many ways that USA Football, in conjunction with the NFL, has taken steps to present a compressive way to teach and play the game.” After the presentations, the women took part in interactive drills. They learned proper Heads Up Football tackling techniques, which instruct players to keep their heads up and out of the line of contact. The drills were led by Columbus High School Coach and Heads Up Football Master Trainer Chris Merritt “The program was an overwhelming success,” said Drayton. “We are planning a bigger and better event next year. We are expecting over 200 moms next year.”

Poster/Essay Contest Helps Students Get their Smoke Alarms Working By Debby Teich

Many people do not test their smoke alarms as often as they should. When there is a fire, they may not have enough time to flee from fast spreading smoke. This month, elementary school students throughout Davie will be learning about the importance of smoke alarms, as they compete in the Town of Davie Fire Rescue/Fire Prevention Bureau’s 18th Annual Fire Prevention Week Essay/Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month.” The deadline to enter is September 30. “The contest is designed to contribute to the education of our children and their families, as well as our local merchants,” said Betty Daly-Hilsman, who coordinates the program. “They learn about fire awareness, safety and prevention.” All Davie elementary schools are eligible to participate. Students in grades K-3 will create posters, while those in grades 4-5 will write essays. According to the rules, all of the work must reflect this year’s theme and posters cannot be larger than 12” X 12.” Teachers will select one winner from each grade level. On October 10, approximately 50 students will be honored for their winning entries at an awards ceremony at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center, where their work will be on display. The students will receive trophies, backpacks, certificates, t-shirts, fire prevention and safety items, and information. The Town Administrator, Mayor, Town Council, Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and other Fire Department officials

are typically invited to attend the event, which is hosted by Fire Marshal Tony Precanico. “The students are so proud when they see their entries hanging on the wall,” said Daly-Hilsman. From October 6 to 17, in observance of Fire Prevention Week, Fire Prevention will be visiting schools to provide fire and safety and prevention demonstrations. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, which killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. It always falls near October 9, which was the most devastating day of this fire. The NFPA recommends the following smoke alarm tips to prevent fires: ▸▸ Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home. ▸▸ Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. ▸▸ Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. ▸▸ Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. ▸▸ Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. For information, call 954-797-1229 or visit www.firepreventionweek.org.

Cryotherapy for Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers for men in the country. Each year, more than 200,000 men will be diagnosed with the disease. There are many innovative treatments available, such as cryotherapy, which provides hope for patients who have either exhausted other options or would like to avoid surgery. Cryotherapy has been available since the early 1990s; however, significant improvements have been made in both the way it’s delivered and in how well it’s tolerated by patients. Advances

Nicolas Muruve, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida Urologist

in technology have allowed for a safe and effective technique that can now be performed on an outpatient basis. Extremely cold temperatures are used in cryotherapy, in order to freeze and destroy cancer tissue. Originally used in treating warts and skin lesions, it has more recently been used in treating various kinds of cancer. With cryotherapy, an ultra-thin metal probe or needle is utilized, as well as ultrasound imaging as a guide during the process. A freezing liquid, such as liquid nitrogen or more commonly, argon gas, is infused through the probe into the prostate gland. The intense cold freezes the prostate and destroys any cancerous tissue it contains. Using the images from the ultrasound to identify the cancer tissue, the surgeon can limit damage to normal prostate tissue. Any living tissue, healthy or unhealthy, cannot withstand the extreme cold. Though typically not used as a first-line therapy for prostate cancer treatment, cryotherapy is an effective second- or thirdline therapy for patients with recurrent prostate cancer or those who either have not responded to or are not candidates for radiation therapy or surgery. Generally, this includes patients who have had extensive abdominal surgery, as well as patients who have undergone previous radiation therapy. Cryotherapy offers advantages over other methods of cancer treatment. It is less invasive than surgery, involving only a small incision or insertion of the cryoprobe through the skin. Consequently, pain, bleeding, and other complications of surgery are minimized. Cryotherapy allows for a shorter hospital stay and recovery time. For appropriate candidates, cryotherapy offers similar success rates to those of other therapies, including radiofrequency ablation, with a low incidence of side effects. It is generally well-tolerated, and cryotherapy procedures for prostate cancer treatment last only about 30 minutes.

nce again , the summer has quickly passed us

by and it’s time for the school year to begin again. It is an exciting and often stressful time as children begin a new year with new classes, new teachers and sometimes new schools. For children of divorced parents, there can be some additional stress. Of course, parents who place the children first can make it much less stressful. These days, we are seeing more equal time sharing between mom and dad. This also means equal responsibilities for each parent as well. In an intact marriage, parents usually assume certain roles and assist each other. In a one parent household, there are no longer defined roles. Mom and Dad must each make sure that they get the children up on time, ready on time, perhaps pack lunches, and most importantly complete homework assignments.

Communication between parents is the key to a successful school year. Each parent must realize that they are on the same team and they should not be looking for a “gotcha” moment. Each should be ready to assist each other, rather than trying to find fault to be used in a court proceeding. Joint parenting is not a contest; Mom vs. Dad. It is an attempt to have both parents do what’s best for the child as opposed to try and prove who may be the better parent. The most common equal time sharing schedule is two nights with one parent (Monday and Tuesday) and two nights with the other parent (Wednesday and Thursday), with weekends (Friday to Monday) being rotated from week to week. A set schedule such as this gives a child some stability and doesn’t cause him/her to wonder where he/she will be sleeping from day to day. Of course, communication between parents is still necessary. Class projects, homework and school events must be known to each parent. Parents should not rely on their children to deliver this information. Often, teachers will be accommodating and provide duplicate information, so each parent is aware of assignments and future school events. Shared Parental Responsibility requires shared information. Sometimes I encounter parents who are so angry with each other that their focus is on the other parent’s possible shortcomings rather than working together to assist the children. Unfortunately, emotions sometime interfere with common sense. It is difficult to successfully maintain an equal time sharing schedule if the parties do not reside in close proximity to one another. Getting a child to school on time can be a problem if one of the parents resides far from the school. It is not in a child’s best interests to have to wake up extremely early to accommodate a parent who chooses to reside a distance from his/her school. If a parent truly wants to have equal time, the child’s needs must come first. A child who has both parents in his/her life will derive a benefit, but only if the focus of each parent is the child and his/her needs. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

A Whiter Brighter Smile By Dr. Maria Grosman

A

s I sit down to write this article , I am trying

out a new tooth whitening product, which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf, and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children, as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient, which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12, this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised, because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Road, on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. he market is in recovery – and recovering

nicely. However, it is not bouncing back as predicted – because of the lack of houses available! Nationally: Inventory levels are BELOW historic norms. History shows us that a balanced real estate market requires a six month supply of available housing inventory. NAR stated that the nation is experiencing 5.5 months of supply, not having hit the six-month mark in over two years. The recent increase in buyers now looking will again put a strain on this number. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, stated that housing fundamentals are moving in the right direction. “Inventories are at their highest level in over a year and price gains have slowed to much more welcoming levels in many parts of the country. . . On the contrary, new home construction needs to rise by at least 50 percent for a complete return to a balanced market, because supply shortages – particularly in the West – are still putting upward pressure on prices.” Locally: What about months of inventory in our area? If we were to not take another listing today and have to sell everything currently listed in the Multiple Listing Service, how long would it take to sell?

Small Single Portal Knee Arthroscopic Surgery (SPA) By Fernando A. Moya, MD, PhD

A

rthroscopic surgery is the way most S ports

Medicine doctors in the world are able to get inside the joint (like the knee) to fix, repair, clean up and do a debridement of the joint. Patients need arthroscopic surgery because they injured their joint and have injured their cartilage, have loose bodies, or have diseases that do not respond or get better with the classical nonsurgical approach. This is also the most common way we operate patients with ACL ligament tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and intra-articular loose bodies. I must emphasize that a surgical procedure in sports medicine is only needed when the patient has severe problems with the shoulder and knee joint. Most of the time, patients immediately after an injury need to be treated with medication by mouth like antiinflammatory medication, icing of the injured part, elevation of the extremity and immediate rest. If the pain and disability does not go away the patient needs to visit an emergency room or an orthopedic surgeon. Usually x-rays are taken to make sure there is no bone problem like a fracture and a complete physical exam done. Further testing with an MRI scan may be needed in some cases. The purpose of the arthroscopic surgery is to make a patient painless and functional. This new technology has revolutionized medicine and continues to evolve to the point that today I am able to do the arthroscopic surgery doing ONE single small incision. Most surgeons who do arthroscopic surgery need to do two or three small incision poke holes, to do the surgery in that joint. Those extra two or three holes are still needed for other complex surgeries. This new technique uses ONLY ONE small incision and was created as a less intrusive method to operate joints especially the knee joint. Through that one incision I am able to do many of the arthroscopic surgeries commonly done in the knee and I DO NOT need to do two or three small incisions. The most common surgeries that I can do with a single incision portal are surgery for meniscus tear, loose bodies inside the joint, diagnostic arthroscopy, debridement of infection inside the knee joint and synovectomies. Again, more complex surgeries will still require the orthopedic surgeon to use two or three extra holes to do the surgery. The advantages of this single portal arthroscopic surgery has to do with reducing the number of incisions from three or two to just one single incision causing most patients to report less pain, better immediate movement, less swelling of the joint and faster recovery or rehabilitation. This will then allow the patient to start the standard rehabilitation protocol faster to resume activities of daily living like walking, standing and eventually recovering full sport capacity without pain, swelling or locking episodes. In conclusion, single portal knee arthroscopy is a new technique that continues to provide new more effective ways to help the patients go back into an active lifestyle and a the sport they want to play. ask the Sheriff

Honoring All Military, Public Servants, Fallen Heroes By Sheriff Scott J. Israel

M

y father , Maurice “Sonny ” I srael , served in

the military as a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant. He proudly wore the uniforms of the New York City Police Department and the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office for a combined 47 years of public service. As a decorated NYPD detective and PBSO deputy, his character, his courage and his devotion inspired me to join law enforcement. As Sheriff, I strive to live up to his memory and his expectations every day. That’s why there is one group of people I always want to acknowledge and thank personally, but I don’t always get the opportunity to do so: the men and women of our military. When we remember the victims of the 9/11 attack this month, we memorialize those who lost their lives on that fateful day in 2001. But that somber day also reminds us once again to recognize and thank our veterans, especially the 2.5 million service members who answered the call since those attacks and served in numerous U.S. deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Annually, BSO pays tribute to the sacrifices that the military, law enforcement, fire rescue and detention deputies make every day. We hold a special End of Watch Memorial for those at BSO who were killed in the line of duty. In September, we also honor the victims, fire fighters, paramedics and police officers of 9/11 during our local observance of the national memorial events. We remember the legacies and the sacrifices of all of our fallen, whether they lost their lives locally or overseas. We refer to the fallen as heroes, because there is no other act that holds greater meaning than giving one’s life to save another. Their deaths are the ultimate sacrifice. In the early morning of September 11, 2013, as I was on my way to BSO’s annual 9/11 memorial ceremony, BSO Deputy Daniel Rivera was involved in a single-car crash, which eventually took his life. While Deputy Rivera was fighting for his life in intensive care, his fellow BSO deputies lined the hallways of the hospital waiting for news and comforting his family who flew in from New York. Together, we attended Deputy Rivera’s funeral and shared our memories of him to find a sense of peace. This year, Deputy Daniel Rivera will be remembered in the End of Watch Memorial. He is one of many BSO heroes who will be greatly missed. He protected and served Broward County without expecting recognition or thanks. Deputy Rivera’s integrity and character, what he devoted to the job and to his family, will live on through his memory. We pray and say words of comfort during memorials, but words alone fall terribly short if we don’t honor these men and women with deeds worthy of their sacrifices. If we become a reflection of who our fallen heroes once were, then we can inspire others, and then their legacies live on. This month is a special time to say “thank you” to those selfless Americans who put their all on the line to safeguard our fellow residents. May God continue to bless our service men and women, our veterans, our law enforcement and fire rescue personnel, and all of their families.
